I stopped at the grocery store for a few things and, of course, came out with more than I’d planned. I stood outside waiting for my husband to pull up, shifting bags that were heavier than I’d expected. Before I could adjust my grip one more time, a young store attendant gathering carts across the lot broke into a jog toward me. A driver was waiting behind him to get through, and my new cart friend kept coming anyway. “May I help you carry those?” he asked.

I stood there for a moment after he took the bags and whispered to myself, “Number twenty-five. That’s the Alignment Signal Draw™ (ASD) at work.” My community and I had committed to identifying as many signals as possible in seven days, and I was on day two. Thirty of us, men and women, wrote down every moment we recognized as the Alignment Signal™ at work in our lives. The assignment was to report all of it, the small moments right alongside the big breakthroughs, whatever dropped in front of us or just to the side of our attention.

Twenty-Five Steps and Flowing

Every time I arrived from the snow and cold of home, I would stop at the entrance and take it in. The glistening turquoise. The warm, salt-sweet air meeting me with every step. I dropped my bags, pulled off my sweatshirt, kicked off my shoes and socks, and walked straight into the infinity pool, the Caribbean waiting just beyond it, twenty-five steps away.

I have always loved what they say about Titian, the Renaissance master and contemporary of Michelangelo. Where Michelangelo emphasized structure, Titian was celebrated for his color. He layered it, over and over, building depth and luminosity until the canvas seemed alive. His Venetian golds and ultramarines appeared to breathe. Each layer contributed something to the whole. The condo came to me the same way. I rented it out when I wasn’t there, and it carried itself well. Then the building needed exterior work on the ocean side. The reserve fund usually covers that kind of expense, but the board decided the cost belonged to the units facing the water, since they were the ones affected. None of us saw it coming, the seasoned owners included, and several board members were writing the same check. I didn’t love it. I understood it. Oceanfront has a price of admission.

An extra bill arrived with a tight deadline. Twenty-seven thousand US dollars for exterior building work, first payment due in May, balance by August. As a Canadian, I knew exactly what that exchange rate meant. The rush of constricting fear brushed through my system so efficiently I knew I had to stop everything to address this SOS.

I set a number my whole psyche could hold without reservation. Fifty thousand felt real. It would cover the bill once the exchange rate had its say, with some left over. Every morning I tuned in and declared the fifty thousand already here. Every night I tuned in again and claimed the same knowing. Life is always fully present, and nothing was ever missing. My practice was to stay tuned in to that truth.

Meanwhile, as much as I loved the condo as my dream second home, it had become more of an anchor than the spinnaker I’d hoped it would be. It rented reasonably well, but the business side wasn’t delivering the return I’d envisioned. The condo had been on the market for some time without an interested buyer, and the unexpected bill made selling it more urgent.

With the payment deadline approaching, I decided to text the board member I knew best. He had always been helpful, recommending restaurants and pointing me toward the best part of the ocean to see turtles. I wanted to assure him that the bill would be paid on time and let him know the condo was for sale.

I received a thumbs-up and was ready to turn the phone off when I saw that he was composing another note: Let me talk to my sister. She has mentioned before that she is interested. We grew up coming here. She knows your unit well. Leave it with me.

That was 8 p.m.

At 11 p.m., this message came through: My sister wants to buy it. We will pay your asking price. My eyes went wide. I immediately texted my real estate agent and stepped aside so she could take it from there. At 6 a.m. the next morning, my condo was sold.

When the papers came through for final signatures and I saw the number, I realized I had forgotten the declaration altogether. I had declared fifty thousand. The sale brought much more than that.

I had been preparing to pay a bill. That was the whole of my plan. I had no idea that, in the process, I would also sell a condo that had been waiting a year for its buyer. Now, in a matter of hours, both had been resolved. I had been concentrating on the fifty thousand I believed I needed. What arrived was far beyond the number I had allowed myself to imagine.

Here’s what keeps coming back to me. The tuning in took so much focus that there was little space left to map out how any of it would come together. All things work together for good. I repeated it morning and night until it was the only station playing. The board member became the bridge. His sister became the buyer. A woman who had grown up coming to that building and already knew my condo had been there all along. I couldn’t have imagined how we would find each other.

That’s what the ASD helped me recognize. By paying attention, I became more receptive to the people, moments and conversations around me. I still had to participate. I had to think things through, reach out and act, even from a place of fear and uncertainty. When I did, it felt as though we were all moving together, each of us playing our part in something larger than any one of us.

The outcome had been beyond anything I could see, as surely as the Caribbean was there, twenty-five steps beyond the pool. Abundance is ever-present. The practice is learning to recognize it. I’m still learning to trust that knowing fully. Fear can still arrive loud and fast. But faith is growing stronger with practice, and the tuning in comes a little sooner, with less effort and resistance.

That’s the growth toward knowing.

The day of the signing, the rain came down in a way that would not let up. In the tropics, it always lets up. That day it didn’t. I sat in the car and cried as hard as the rain hit the pane. I remember the thought: This is a washing away of all that doesn’t need to be carried any longer. It was the same cleansing the earth has known since the first rain, clearing what needed to go so life could continue its natural cycle of growth.

The meeting room at the real estate office barely fit the table. Thirty-five degrees Celsius outside, with the humidity pressing in from every direction. My two real estate agents and I sat on one side, the broker in the middle, the new owners and the brother across from us. The woman representing the buyers was kind and could see I was sad. I could barely speak. She handed me the papers, I signed, and I got out of there as quickly as I could.

The drive to the hotel showed me that the sadness had little to do with the condo itself. I was saying goodbye to the future I had imagined there, all the wonderful, exciting things we humans feel when something works in our favor. The rain pounded the entire day, and by nightfall I understood. I had to release the picture I’d been holding of how it would all unfold. Letting go was the mechanism, and what felt like loss was making space. The understanding began in that cramped room among kind strangers and arrived slowly, truthfully, as the day closed.

The rain taught me something about knowing. The Old English word cnawan meant to perceive or understand something as a fact or truth, a meaning that distinguished knowing from believing. The same ancient linguistic root connects know with recognize and acknowledge. Belief reaches for something. Knowing recognizes what’s already there. The work was to stop gripping long enough to notice.

That’s the surrender. The knowing does the rest.

You pull up to the coffee window, ready to pay. The barista smiles. “You’re good. She paid for you. Pass it on!”

The car ahead is already disappearing into traffic. Someone you’ve never met has thought of you. You look up from whatever was occupying your mind, and something in you lifts. You buy the next coffee. Later that morning, you have a little more patience with someone who needs it. Whoever receives that patience will never know about the woman in the car, and she’s there all the same.

That’s compounding interest, the way I mean it.

Start with the words. Compound comes from the Latin componere, to put together. Interest comes from interesse, to be between, to matter, to make a difference. Put them together and the meaning moves out of the bank. Compounding interest begins when someone’s words or actions spark joy, stir something in you, or create a connection you want to experience again. An old Sanskrit word for compound interest, cakravṛddhi, joins cakra, wheel, and vṛddhi, growth. The coffee line turns like that wheel, one car at a time.

So how does interest begin? Take it to dinner.

You ask the waiter what he’d recommend. He tells you where the fish was caught that morning, how the chef prepares it, and what gives the dish its flavor. His knowledge makes the choice clearer. His enthusiasm makes you curious. He asks how you like it prepared, listens to your answer, and helps you make the experience your own. Then the dish arrives. You taste it. What he described and what you experience belong together. Next time, you ask to sit in his section.

Define. Inspire. Execute. Trust. D.I.E.T.

Each step makes the next one possible. Definition gives his enthusiasm substance. Inspiration invites you to consider a possibility. Execution turns it into an experience you can assess for yourself. Trust grows when the care and the experience hold together. You leave with something of his interest in the work. And if you don’t like fish? He suggests something else. Your preference gives him information, and his knowledge stays whole. There’s generosity in letting another person stay themselves. You bring a friend back. You remember how good it felt to be listened to, and you offer someone else the same attention. His care has several places to go.

Bringing a friend back to his section is word of mouth at its simplest. Some of us remember it on television. A woman with beautiful hair loved her Fabergé Organic Shampoo so much she told two friends, and they told two friends, and so on, and so on, while the screen split into more and more smiling faces. It’s a memorable picture of a recommendation spreading, and an early visual shorthand for what we now call going viral. What the split screen skips is the part that comes first. People tell two friends about a shampoo that delivers. The telling has to be earned, the same way the waiter earned your return, one step of D.I.E.T. at a time.

The nine pictures accompanying this article are a nod to that commercial. They imagine what happens when something good travels through different people’s lives, taking a new form in each encounter.

Interest grows the same way online, which brings me to a client who told me the other day that she hates influencers. I understood. I’ve felt it too. The outer shell can wear you out: the presentation, the performance, the constant invitation to look at someone. Then I think of the people whose work I look forward to. They make me think. Sometimes I disagree, and the disagreement sharpens my own position. Sometimes they find the words for something I’ve thought about for years. That’s interest.

Some of them have spent years finding the courage to be seen. Post by post, they’ve offered a point of view, opened themselves to criticism, and kept showing up. What looks effortless on a screen took a great deal to become. Sometimes we dismiss the very thing we’re terrified to try ourselves. Years ago, I called this progression the trifecta of brand identity: awareness, recognition, and insistence. We notice someone. We start to recognize their voice, their quirks, the way they see. Then one day we go looking for them. What they bring has come to matter to us, and we want more of it.

Tell me what you mean, in language I can understand, with a thought worth considering. Show me how it lives, in a choice, a story, an ordinary moment I recognize. Prove it. If you’ve promised a way to do something, help me do it. If you’ve offered a perspective, give me something solid to examine for myself.

The waiter does all of this in a few minutes. A post, a conversation, or a piece of work can do it too. Interest draws us toward something, and care gives us a reason to stay. It works in both directions. Tell me, show me, prove it gives us permission to look closely before we carry a thought into our own lives, and it asks the person offering to explain, demonstrate, and correct when needed. Interest deepens when honesty is welcome on both sides.

When we dim our light, we can quiet the very thing someone came to us to feel: our warmth, our courage, the imagination that lets them consider a possibility of their own. There are days for privacy and rest, and we can honor those days and still give our passion its full expression. Claiming your light is a gift to the people who feel its glow.

Here’s where compounding interest parts ways with the bank’s version. In a bank, interest earns interest, and a dollar comes back as more dollars. The Fabergé split screen multiplied faces around the same recommendation. Both grow, and both carry more of the same thing. What travels between people changes form. Look again at our nine pictures, starting at the coffee window.

A small kindness becomes a willingness to stop and help. Being listened to makes it easier to listen. Encouragement gives someone the courage to take a next step. A friend shares in a celebration. An older man steadies a child on a bicycle, and the child later offers his grandmother a jar of jam. These pictures imagine the places generosity might go. Each person brings something of their own to what they’ve received.

In the last picture, the man from the coffee window sits with a lovely cocktail, enjoying the view. He can give and receive. A person’s capacity to care includes letting a good moment reach them, too. Nobody has to keep giving to earn the right to enjoy one.

The first kindness needs no promise of a return. Someone does something thoughtful because that’s how they choose to be. Another person feels it, and something in them shifts. What they do with that feeling belongs to them.

In 1972, meteorologist Edward Lorenz gave a talk asking whether the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil could set off a tornado in Texas. He was talking about weather and the difficulty of predicting how small changes might unfold. I see a human echo in that idea: a small act stirs something in one person, comes out as something new in the next, and reaches places the first person never sees. You don’t have to imitate the person who helped you. Someone adds a bay leaf of inspiration, and what they’ve stirred becomes part of what you bring to your next moment: your next audition, meeting, presentation, or post. You stay yourself, with more to offer.

For a local business, a personal brand, or anyone giving a passion a fuller expression, there’s something here to practice. Tell your stories. Bring your care and your particular way of seeing to the work. Show up when it’s terrifying. Find your way back when something falls flat. This is why we all matter. Our opinions, creative ideas, and passions deserve expression, and we’re responsible for how we express them. Passion needs integrity: care for the people it touches and respect for their dignity and their freedom to choose. We can challenge one another, disagree, and awaken something new while honoring those things.

Some people will be interested and some won’t, and that’s fine. One person walks past your work while another stops: you’ve said exactly what they’ve been trying to understand. Someone will carry what you’ve offered into a moment you’ll never see.

Your first moment earns you more moments. What you bring to each experience can help others find a little more of themselves. That is how compounding interest becomes service to others: generosity compounds into more meaningful moments.

I put that question to Erwin Truong on our episode, and his answer turned my worry inside out.

Most of us look at AI and feel the ground move. If a tool can do in seconds what took us years to learn, what is left that belongs to us? Erwin hears that fear all day, and he thinks it points the wrong way.

His case is simple. AI is trained on the average. It learns from the great mass of what already exists, so it pulls everything toward the middle. Competence is now cheap, because competence is exactly what the middle is made of. What the middle can never produce is the exception. The rare configuration. The person who does the thing no average could predict. When the floor rises, the exceptional does not shrink. It stands out more.

The floor came up. The ceiling did not. And the distance between them is where you live.

This is a leadership idea dressed as a technology one. It says the answer is never to out-average the machine. You cannot. The answer is to become more precisely, more fully, more unmistakably yourself, because that is the one input no model was trained on.

Erwin lives it. He spent ten years as a competitive trading card player, where the line between average and great is razor thin and everyone can see which side you land on. He walked into the studio with a championship card on his desk, and it was not a trophy. It was a thesis. It was proof that the edge was always in the part of him the game could not standardize.

It’s time to Switch it up.

Launch came into English around 1300. It meant to rush, to plunge, to leap, to start forth. To be set into sudden motion. It came through Old French lancier, to fling, to hurl, to throw. Underneath sits the Latin lancea, a light spear.

Here’s the part I keep revisiting.

The original launch was the throwing kind. The one that leaves your hand. The heavy lance a knight grips and drives forward on horseback came about three centuries later. So the first meaning of the word was the weapon you had to let go of.

By 1400 people used it for boats, from the idea of throwing the boat out onto the water. By 1600 it had loosened into any sort of beginning.

I’ve been preparing for this the way I prepare for anything that matters, which is more than required in most cases. My motto is always this: if you can deliver the highest possibilities of the moment, then you must. That instinct has served me and it has also cost me time. Endless preparation cannot stand as the final marker of success. At some point the spear leaves your hand or it was never a spear. It was a stick you were holding.

Jerry Phlippeau threw with nothing in his hand. He started his company in 1992 out of a Los Angeles apartment, right after being homeless. His words, and he says them without flinching: “Out of desperation to eat, I started a business.” The first product was pepper spray, back when almost nobody sold it to civilians. The first big order came from JCPenney, and he had no money to fill it, so he learned how to finance an order. Today Flipo, his company of more than 30 years, sells in six countries, and he holds patents on things he dreamed up himself. What he taught me on this episode has nothing to do with product. It’s what his father told him long before he was old enough to understand it, and it’s the reason he’s still standing.

Renee Deighton threw with a full one. She spent 20 years as one of the most beloved hosts in live selling in this country, and she signed off at the top. Within weeks she was in Roatan, Honduras, running her third year of a clinic that has spayed and neutered 526 animals. She and I came up in the same business, the one where the light goes red and the clock doesn’t care how you feel. She’s the only person I know who walked away from a whole identity and never once looked back over her shoulder for permission. She is the Queen of the Pivot.

And me. Victor Virgilio, who’s been at the board for 30 years, and my producer, asked to trade seats with me. So I wrote the cue-to-cue that put myself in the guest chair. I direct this show. Directing myself out of the chair was the one switch I welcomed.

Here’s the other half, and it gets said badly most of the time, so let me be careful.

You can be entirely heart-led, artistic, moved by what makes you feel alive, and still build something that lasts. Both, though. Plan for both. Respect the transformation you create and respect the structure that lets it keep happening. It’s relationship and community rather than a transaction.

It’s how you build from your gifts instead of leaving all of it on the stage.

I learned that one the hard way. Standing ovations don’t build businesses. Planning for the next moment does.

The picture shows up early, long before there’s a scrap of evidence for it. Then it starts gathering what it needs. A conversation. A teacher. A table worth sitting at. One morning the leader looks up and the life around her is the picture she had been carrying.

There is sequence to that, and an intelligence within that. The same order runs through a career, through a performance, through the Game Face a leader works through before the lights come up.

The dream arrives first. What you place beside the dream decides whether it lives.

I call that Intelligent Adjacency.

Proximity was never luck. It was chosen.

WHERE I LEARNED IT

The term came to me on a sales floor. Place the wine at eye level. Place the bottle opener and the wine glasses within arm’s reach. Place the cheese board nearby. The customer who came in for one bottle walks out with the complete experience, because what she needed to finish the moment was already sitting beside the moment.

A shelf is a life you can see from across the store.

THE BUYER

My business partner and I walked into a meeting with the buying team of one of the largest retailers in the world. Within five minutes the buyer said she would send a deck to set us up as a vendor. I remember thinking, “Well that was easy.”

We walked out of the royal blue building with the yellow logo. My long-time partner put his pointer finger to his lips as he opened the passenger door for me. The car doors slammed shut. Then a WAHOOOO flooded the SUV. I asked him how that close had happened so fast.

“I have known that buyer for nearly twenty years. I have been waiting for the right product to bring to her. Today was that day.”

Twenty years of standing near a door before it ever opened.

TRANSLATED TO LIFE

Intelligent Adjacency is the positioning of yourself in proximity to the places, the people, the conversations, and the standards where the next level of your becoming is already taking place.

Hear the word becoming in there. Manifestation comes from the Latin manifestus, hand-struck, evident to the senses. Manifestation watches for what appears. Becoming is who you are while it does. Intelligent Adjacency is a becoming discipline. You spend time inside the proximity of leaders who already live the way you’re building toward, and the proximity does its deliberate patient work.

Most leaders treat proximity as an outcome, something granted once the results arrive. Proximity is the input, chosen early and on purpose, long before the occasion that calls on it. Glenn spent a career at it. My partner spent twenty years at it. Neither of them sat waiting to be worthy of the table. They were sitting near it the whole time.

That is Intelligent Adjacency at its finest. Never a strategy. A lifetime of showing up for the right people in the right conversations, so that when the occasion comes, the trust is already there, and the only thing left to do is savour the wine with a meal and stories with friends.

Stand near the life you are building toward, until the proximity does its deliberate patient work.

It comes from the Greek thesis and the Latin positio, both meaning to place, to set down. For 2,400 years, your position was the claim you made and defended in dialogue.

· Aristotle described it in his Topics.

· A thinker placed their thesis and stood upon it while the questioner tried to refute it.

To hold a position was to defend a claim that was yours. Only in the 1500s did position collapse into meaning where you are standing physically.

No one escapes having a position. Every life is already positioned. The only question is whether you claimed yours consciously, or whether the default claimed it for you while you were looking somewhere else. This is where the work is. Becoming a pattern recognition expert in your own life. Reading the signals your experience has been sending you for years. Knowing what you are building toward, because success looks completely different from one life to the next. Not every reader wants a castle. Not every reader wants a pile of money. The position you claim depends entirely on the life you have chosen to live.

That is why the words can be copied and the position cannot. Words are surface. Position is what is underneath. It is the totality of what brought you here. The soot and the triumph, the digging and the rising, the letting go and the loving. It is what a life has claimed.

There is an ancient meaning underneath the word success too. It comes from the Latin successus, from succedere. To rise from under. To ascend. To follow close behind. Success was never the arrival. It was the sequence. The cascade of what follows when what came before yields to what comes next.

Success is positioning. Everything else honors the totality of your stance: the rising, the opened doors, the lifted frequencies, the right combination of people, the visible outcomes. Position claimed first. The cascade of everything else follows.

So, carry your position at whatever volume you choose. Loud when it needs to be loud. Quiet when quiet is the winning move.

Three of the loved ones in my life have died, and none of the answers came in the moments they left. They arrived later. In sprinkles of heartache and laughter. In the mirror that gives me my mom’s face. In the birthmark I share with my sister. In the way my father made each person feel they mattered, and the way I find myself doing the same. Each one answered the question in a different language.

It has been 4 years since my dad’s passing, 23 years since my sister left us, and 27 years of living life without my mom. I know it all sounds morose to many people, but I have learned one thing which you might find worth sticking around for:

I lost my mom to cancer. I found out six days before her death. As an oncology nurse, Mom knew months before what she was facing. She chose to keep it to herself, electing living rather than dying. There is a Spanish word for what she showed me. Alegría. The willingness to hold joy and sorrow in the same breath, with no apology for either. She handed me a tool I would not understand the weight of for years.

I was in the UK when the call came at 8pm that my sister had taken her life. I learned that day what it means to be alone with information that changes the shape of your life. Grief without witness has its own architecture. In that loneliness, surrender held my hand. To give over what was never mine to carry. I learned more about what love does for us when nothing else seemed to matter.

The third experience of death was my most recent. It’s left me to discover and create an expanded family on my own. His long stage 4 cancer journey was filled with quiet chats. Shocking moments that stole the breath from us. Closed-door oncology meetings and cordoned-off radiation areas. From the chemo chairs to the hallways where patients, employees, ambulance drivers, family members alike paused their own lives to applaud as Dad honked the triumphant horn. When the rhythm of his life was ready to move on, he chose MAID. Medical Assistance in Dying.

I know MAID can be a difficult conversation, and that for many the words sit uncomfortably, perhaps forever. It is not a light decision, but it is the choice of the person making it of sound mind. It was the right decision for my father. He chose it. The final weeks of his life were filled with steady company. Quiet meals. Loud laughter. Music. Releasing him turned out to be the assignment of a lifetime, the one that teaches us how to let go with grace instead of gripping with grief. The architecture of caring for someone leaving the world turned out to be the same architecture as welcoming someone into it. It was a privilege. It was an honor. It was a gift.

The last words my father gave us were the words of the leader he’d always been. He addressed each of us sitting around his bedside. One at a time. He told each of us, individually, how much the world still needs us.

The finish line we set for ourselves turns out to be a checkpoint, not a destination. The work continues past it, in the lives we’ve touched and the people we’ve prepared. Transformation occurs in the how we choose to move through the challenges we face. All three of my loved ones transformed how I see life.

The choice of how becomes who we become.

That is what I am building this experience of life for. To carry the joy and the sorrow in the same hand. To be the steady company when someone else’s hardest moment arrives.

Joy. Sorrow. Alegría. The willingness to hold all of it.

The joy is in the becoming.

The same root gave us gratitude, charity, charisma, and the prayer said before a meal. The classical world honored three sister goddesses called the Gratiae, bestowers of beauty and charm. Wherever the word grace has lived, it has carried one constant. The thing offered without being earned.

That is the part most leaders find difficult.

A grown adult who has built a life from effort, discipline, and the accumulated proof of being capable can sit in the presence of an undeserved kindness and not know what to do with it. The instinct is to reach for the wallet. To reciprocate. To find the equivalent return, in the equivalent currency, before the kindness has even finished arriving. The whole architecture of receiving collapses if grace requires payment. Grace is the favor that has nothing to do with whether the receiver deserved it.

There is one discipline required to receive grace, and it is the harder of the two. Say thank you. Let the kindness arrive at the address it was sent to.

The Latin gratus is the same root as grateful. Inside the word grace itself sits the answer to the question of how to receive it. With gratitude. The welcome is what the word was always asking for.

Grace given is the gift. Grace received is the practice that lets the gift arrive.

This is the part most leader’s underestimate. The work was not done in the meeting. The work was done before the meeting. What you wore. What you ate. What you let yourself think on the drive over. Whether you arrived early enough that the space belonged to you before the first person walked in.

The occasion does not need a presenter. It needs the specific person who prepared for the specific moment. The opening sentence is not about you. It is the seconds during which the people in front of you decide whether what follows is worth their full attention. Give them a reason that belongs only to them.

You have to be so tuned in to two equally important dynamics - your motive for being there and the following: Who is in the space and who is not. The seniority, the mix, the reason they gathered. A group of peers reads differently than a group you have been invited to lead or influence.

Whatever the people in front of you see before you speak is already shaping their experience of you. How you enter, where you stand, what you do in the silence before the first word. All of it is being received. Make sure what is being received is what you intend to give.

Show up dressed for the occasion. Show up rested for the occasion. Show up prepared for the occasion. The professionals who handle these moments with discipline are the ones who perform as though they have done this a thousand times, which in their preparation, they have.

There is one more layer. The occasion does not always announce itself. Some of the most consequential moments in a leader’s life arrived as ordinary days. A casual coffee that became a partnership. A small panel that became a turning point. A conversation that became the catalyst for the next chapter. The leaders who treat every occasion as an occasion are the ones who recognize the consequential moment in time to meet it properly.

Show up for the occasion in front of you.

Then show up for the one you did not see coming.

I have my own version of this conversation. I have washed you. I have dressed you. I have fed and watered you. Now not another word, not another thought from you. Let’s get on with what needs to be done and enjoy the process. The reflection knows the truth before the day begins. The mirror has been getting the unfiltered version of every leader for as long as mirrors have existed. Showing up for yourself is the daily act of telling the truth to the only witness who has watched the whole climb.

The word itself carries the act. Show comes from the Old English sceawian, to look at, to inspect. Up comes from the Proto-Indo-European upo, up from under. To show up is to come up from under and let yourself be seen. The first place that has to happen is the mirror.

The leaders I have worked with across forty years on live floors and main stages have all had this in common. They have a private practice. A way of meeting themselves before they meet the day. Some pray. Some run. Some sit with coffee in a chair that does not move. The form varies. The function does not. Each one shows up for the version of themselves who has to walk into the next part of the day. Each one settles a small interior argument before the first external demand of the day arrives.

There is also the harder version of this discipline. The days when the reflection is not friendly. The days when the body is tired, the work is heavy, the year has been long. Show up anyway. The kind of showing up that is built from action, the kind that does not wait for the mood to arrive first. Get dressed. Drink the water. Walk past the mirror. Begin. The discipline is built into the doing, not into the feeling. The feeling will catch up.

You do not have to feel ready to show up for yourself. You only have to be willing to do the next true thing. The mirror does not need a performance. It needs your presence.

That is the practice. The simplest discipline. The most important element to being your best every time!

Aristotle, in the Topics, took the same word and gave it to philosophy. A thesis, for him, was a considered claim placed in front of others for examination, held from an informed position, ready to stand up to scrutiny. The body language of the dancer became the body language of the argument. The foot comes down. The position is taken. The work is now on the floor, in plain view.

A book is the same act. The thesis is placed on the table inside the first thirty-five pages, and the reader is the committee. Forty years of selling, hosting, and coaching taught me the structure that holds when the weight comes down. Tell Me. Show Me. Prove It.

Tell Me names the claim.

Show Me places the claim inside a story the reader can feel.

Prove It hands the reader the evidence the moment asks for.

That is the discipline of the downbeat. The work earns its place when every piece does.

I built a method called Anchor Five. It says every leader, every seller, every author writes to five categories of customer at the same time. When you know your anchor five intimately, the motive of your writing changes. The pitch changes. The pace changes. You stop performing at an audience and start speaking to a person you care about.

I am at 105,000 words on the 8th book. The hardest cuts are the ones I have to let go because they do not serve my reader. They may be beautifully constructed and clever. They may sound right when read aloud – however, the job of the writer whose deep motive is to transform and inspire needs to scrutinize what is best to forward the value received for the reader or listener.

Graduation season is almost gone for the university students. It is nearly here for the middle and high school students. And whether you are the one walking across that stage or the one watching someone else walk, the question underneath the ceremony is the same. What have you built that will hold when the structure that has been holding you falls away?

That is the metronome question. And it belongs to leaders at every stage of life.

The metronome is the rhythm of life moving forward, regardless of where you are in your story. The market shifts. The season turns. The audience moves on and a new one arrives. Children grow up. Companies pivot. Industries reinvent themselves. None of this is punishment. None of it is reward. It is simply the beat continuing.

Here is what a graduation marks. The ceremony is the visible moment. The foundation is the invisible thing that earned it. Four years of papers written, classes attended, friendships forged, hard conversations had, late nights survived, and small disciplines repeated. That is the foundation. The cap and gown is the moment the world recognizes what was already true.

The same principle holds for the leader at any stage.

You are always building a foundation that will be tested by the next chapter you cannot fully see yet. The job you are doing now is preparing you for the job you have not been offered yet. The relationships you are honoring now are preparing you for the conversations you have not had yet. The disciplines you are practicing now, the ones nobody is watching, are the ones that will hold you when the spotlight arrives and the stakes are real.

That is the practice of building what will hold. The daily, unglamorous work of laying the next brick. Showing up at your highest level when nothing required it. Treating the small moment as if it were the consequential one, because the consequential one is built on every small moment that came before it.

The metronome does not care whether you have built one. The market does not care. The next chapter of your life does not care. What you build is what you bring. What you skipped is what will be missing when the moment requires it.

So if you are graduating this season, or watching someone you love walk across that stage, here is the truth underneath the ceremony. The diploma marks the achievement. The achievement is who you became while you earned it. That is the foundation. That is what will hold.

The metronome is still keeping the beat. It always was. The only question is what you build inside it.

If you have never watched Jacob Collier conduct an audience, stop reading this and look at this clip. He is standing in front of a few thousand people and he splits them into three sections with a wave of his hand and a held note. He sings the first chord. The space follows. He sings the second. The space shifts with him. By the time he is on the fourth or fifth chord, three thousand strangers are holding a piece of harmony they have never sung before in their lives.

The audience becomes the instrument. He becomes the metronome.

What you are watching is the most disciplined real-time tempo and pitch leadership being practiced anywhere on a public stage today. It is built on something invisible. Something that took thirty years. He has trained for thirty years to be that free.

Jacob Collier grew up in a house full of music. He has perfect pitch. He spent his childhood working in a single attic studio, layering vocal harmonies onto multitrack recordings, hour after hour after hour. He has spoken about practicing for so long that his sense of time stopped depending on the clock and started depending on what he could feel internally. By the time he walks onto a stage in front of three thousand people and asks them to sing a chord, the chord is already living inside him. He is releasing what has been built.

Every great improviser is doing the same thing Jacob Collier is doing. The jazz musician who solos for eight minutes is releasing two decades of scales. The athlete who makes the play of the game is releasing ten thousand practice repetitions. The leader who walks into an exchange and seems to read it perfectly is releasing every conversation, every misread, every recovered moment they have ever had with another human being. The freedom is real. The foundation underneath it is what made the freedom possible.

In my work I teach this as one of the three performance controls. Tease. Tempo. Timbre. Tempo is the one that decides what the audience feels before they understand what you said. The leader who has trained tempo can hold an exchange without raising their voice. The leader who has trained tempo can pause a conversation without losing it. The leader who has trained tempo earns attention in one beat.

What Jacob Collier shows us, in front of a live audience, is the proof. The discipline of the inner clock is what makes the freedom of the moment possible.

You can build that. You start by paying attention to the rhythm underneath everything you do. Then you notice your relationship with it. Then you stop fighting it and let it flow through your every move.

Scarcity belongs to that discipline. It was built to make the buyer lean in. To work the way a great storyteller works. The way a cliffhanger works. The way the pause before the punchline works. Its job is to create the gap that a person fills with their own attention.

The producers of Dallas did not send 47 commercials between March and November. They did not run a countdown banner across the bottom of every episode. They did not flood viewers with “Don’t miss who shot J.R.!” promotions. They put one question into the world, and they trusted the question to do its work.

That is the discipline. The withhold. The deliberate gap that earns the audience’s return.

Many decades ago, long before modern research, a study cited in The New Rules of Retail found that volunteers who received Kool-Aid on a predictable schedule showed little increase in brain activity. The volunteers who received the same Kool-Aid on an unpredictable schedule lit up.

Read that one more time. The brain woke up for the waiting. The reward itself was a quieter event.

The scarcity of the timing was the active ingredient.

The Dallas model teaches what real scarcity sounds like. One signal placed into the conversation. The silence around it allowed to create the dopamine. The buyer’s intelligence trusted to remember.

The networks of that era understood teasing because they understood who the audience was. The audience is a gathering of human beings whose attention has to be earned with restraint.

That is the lesson. Apple inherited it. Dallas built it. And it is one of many disciplines that live inside my DIET Your Way to Success Method, the architecture that has been pointing toward this kind of teaching since 2014. AGE has its place in leadership.

It’s Time to Switch It Up!

The Latin root of silence means to be still. Not quiet. Still. Quiet is what happens when the noise stops. Still is what happens when you choose to stop making it.

The Latin root of scarcity means to be selected. Set apart. The thing that remains after the choosing.

Read those two roots together and you have the entire posture of a leader who has stopped chasing the sale.

Here is the scenario I want to walk you through.

You have built something. A program, a service, a seat at a table. You have done the work to make it worth offering. You believe in it. You also have one slot left this quarter. Maybe one cohort closing on Friday. Maybe one consulting engagement you can still take on before the end of the year. Whatever it is, the scarcity is real. You did not invent it to sell.

Here is what the leader does in that moment: They send the email once. In it they say what is true. One seat. One cohort. One engagement. Closing Friday. Here is what the offer includes, how it may serve you, the link if you want it.

And then they stop.

That stopping is the work.

That stopping is where the trust lives.

When you hold the silence after a real offer, you are telling the buyer something the language alone cannot tell them. You are telling them you have done your part. You have made the case.

The greatest comedians know the laugh lives in the pause before the punchline. The greatest closers know the yes lives in the pause after the ask.

You are given one silence in any conversation. One. The moment you hold the space without filling it, without rescuing it, without explaining it. That single beat of deliberate stillness tells every person in the conversation that what just happened was worth their time and consideration.

The same is true after an offer is made.

Make the offer. Make it once. Make it with the assumption that the person on the other side of it is fully capable of choosing.

Then be still. The leader who can hold that silence is the professional who earns the yes.

The number tells you how often your message needs to reach someone. It does not tell you to send the same email seven times. It does not tell you to escalate the language with each send. It does not tell you to treat your reader’s inbox as a place you are entitled to occupy without earning it.

When the eighth email arrives and the only thing different from the first one is the subject line in caps, something has been quietly communicated to your reader. You have told them you do not trust them to have understood you the first time. You have told them you do not respect their ability to make a decision without being chased. You have told them that the offer you are selling is not strong enough to stand on its own, so you have to prop it up with volume.

That is the moment trust leaves the conversation. And it never comes back from a discount code.

Look at the deepest root of the word scarcity. It comes from the Latin excarpsus - to be plucked out, selected, set apart. The same root that gave us the word excerpt. Before scarcity meant lack, it meant CURATION. The things that were chosen to remain after everything else was let go.

That is what your offer is. Or it should be. Something you chose to build. Something you chose to keep refining. Something you are now choosing to put in front of a specific person at a specific moment because you believe it will serve them.

When you understand scarcity that way, you stop blasting and you start curating. You send fewer emails. The ones you send are written to the person you are serving, not to a list. You name what is true. If there are three seats left, you say three seats left. If the offer closes Friday, you say Friday once and you let Friday speak for itself.

There is a discipline in the Obvious Yes Strategy that says it more directly.

Every email that talks down to your reader spends some of it. Every email that respects their intelligence earns more of it.

The leader who knows the difference is the one who can sell without selling. The one who can ask for the business without apologizing for asking and without performing urgency to make the ask land.

That is what real scarcity sounds like. One message, said clearly, said once, said with the assumption that the person on the other side of it is as intelligent as you are.

Say it. Mean it. Let it work.
