As you explore, look for opportunities to make your neighborhood a little better. Perhaps you could pick up litter, help a neighbor with a chore, or care for a neglected public space.

Rather than deciding what to do beforehand, let something you notice inspire your act of kindness. Then follow through with care and intention.

It might be someone you generally like or even love but feel annoyed with, or someone you barely know who rubs you the wrong way.

Look for an opportunity to respond to irritation with kindness. Your act can be simple, spontaneous, or anonymous.

Be creative!

Imagine how good it might feel to receive an unexpected message from someone you’ve missed. Then offer that same gift to another person.

Reach out and, if possible, have a meaningful exchange. Let the reconnection itself be an act of kindness.

If reconnecting with a person feels difficult, consider reconnecting with something meaningful from your past instead.

Your act might be as simple as holding a door, offering a smile, or anonymously buying someone coffee.

For an extra challenge, try a spontaneous act of kindness each day, or plan something more intentional for a stranger.

Pay attention to how these moments make you feel, and briefly reflect on your experience at the end of each day.

This week, choose an acquaintance and do something kind for them. Let your act acknowledge your shared humanity. Consider that like you, this person wants to be happy, healthy, and appreciated.

Your kindness can be simple, personal, or even anonymous. Consider what might feel meaningful if your roles were reversed, then act from that place.

Choose a good friend, someone you know well, see regularly, and who has known you at both your best and worst.

For three days, spend a few minutes simply thinking about this person. Let your attention suggest a small, meaningful kindness you wouldn’t otherwise have done. Then do it.

It doesn’t need to be big. In fact, small acts of kindness can be the most meaningful because they require us to pay attention to what someone might appreciate or need.

Afterward, reflect on the experience. Was this easier than doing something kind for yourself? If so, consider doing both this week: something kind for someone you love and something kind for yourself.

Throughout the week, notice what genuinely restores, inspires, or brings you joy. Being kind to yourself isn’t the same as being selfish or self-indulgent. The key is being honest about what truly supports your well-being.

Note:

• Your act of self-kindness might be something you do, or simply a shift in your attitude or awareness.

Spend a few moments with this week’s image. Notice what catches your attention and where your mind wanders. If a kind response comes to you, however small, follow it with care.

Life is full of beginnings. Every conversation, every decision, every act of kindness becomes part of the life we are creating together. We rarely know what will grow from today’s small choices, and we don’t need to. Our part is simply to plant with care.

Thank you for taking part in these ten weeks of Kindness Seeds.

My hope isn’t that you’ve completed a kindness project. It’s that you’ve discovered a way of paying attention that stays with you. Life will continue planting opportunities every day. May you continue to notice them and, in your own quiet way, take part.

Sometimes the kindest response isn’t immediate action. Sometimes it begins by becoming still enough to notice what this moment is asking of you.

Our circles of care are always changing. This week, notice someone (or something) you might welcome in a little more fully.

Kindness often begins with paying attention to what is already here. This week, notice something about life that quietly fills you with gratitude, wonder, or appreciation—and let that noticing shape how you move through the day.

The smallest things often become part of us before we notice. This week, pay attention to what you’re carrying into your conversations, your work, and your relationships.

Giving is only part of kindness. This week, notice what happens when someone offers you a kindness, appreciation, or simple gesture of care. How you receive it may be just as meaningful as how you give it.

Sometimes kindness begins by receiving. Sometimes it grows quietly. And sometimes we find ourselves ready to share what we’ve been given.

Sometimes kindness doesn’t begin something new. Sometimes it simply notices what has already begun to bloom.

Sometimes growth begins long before we can see it.

Spend a few moments with it.

Notice what catches your attention. Notice where your mind wanders. If a kind idea comes to you, whether planned or spontaneous, follow it. The act itself may be small. What matters is that you are present while doing it.

If you’d like, share part of your experience in the comments. Not so others can copy what you did, but so we can appreciate the many different ways people respond to the same invitation.

I call these Kindness Seeds because our lives are shaped, in part, by the small choices we make each day. We rarely know what will grow from them, and we don’t need to.

Our part is simply to notice, to participate, and to respond with care.

Reading: Click here to read Leo Tolstoy’s “God Sees the Truth, But Waits.” As you read, allow your mind to connect to other thoughts and events in your life. When you find one especially meaningful, put away our story and consider yours.

Stories Journal: Assuming you connected your reading to a thought or an event in your life, summarize it in your journal. If you find that difficult, consider this story as a response to a real-life event that you have found challenging to understand. Write about your thoughts related to that.

Kind Action: Is there someone in your life with whom you are holding a grudge or haven’t forgiven? Perhaps someone you are mad at? Do something genuinely kind for that person. If you can’t bring yourself to do something genuine, try to at least think warm thoughts about that person.

For many years I’ve encouraged people to practice ordinary acts of kindness. Not because kindness guarantees a particular outcome, and not because small acts inevitably change the world.

I encourage ordinary acts of kindness because they change the people practicing them.

One of my favorite examples comes from an intergenerational kindness class I facilitated in Seattle many years ago. The class included four residents of a retirement community, four teenage students from the Puget Sound Community School, and me. We met weekly to talk about kindness and, more importantly, to do something kind together.

One week, after delivering donated flowers to residents who had difficulty leaving their apartments, a student suggested a new idea.

“Let’s anonymously buy a stranger a cup of coffee.”

Today, many people have heard of performing a “random act of kindness” or “paying it forward.” At the time, it felt wonderfully creative.

The following week, the four teens, the four elders, and I walked several blocks to a neighborhood coffee shop. As we walked, we pooled our pocket change and talked through the plan. The idea was simple: we would pay for the next person’s drink.

The barista was initially confused by our explanation, but after a few attempts she understood and broke into a smile. She agreed to tell the recipient:

“You have been the victim of a random act of kindness.”

While waiting, we tried very hard to look inconspicuous while sitting around a small table and pretending not to stare at the front counter. It didn’t work. There was nothing inconspicuous about four teens, four elders, and one adult huddled together in an otherwise empty coffee shop at two in the afternoon trying to look nonchalant.

Soon someone entered the shop and ordered a drink. The barista delivered the message. The customer looked puzzled at first, then surprised, then delighted. She accepted her coffee and left. The entire event lasted less than two minutes. And then something happened that has stayed with me ever since.

What happened wasn’t in the transaction. It wasn’t the coffee. It wasn’t even the stranger’s reaction. It was what happened around our table.

The distance between generations disappeared. The elders seemed younger. The teenagers seemed wiser. For a moment, there weren’t four teenagers, four elders, and me. There were simply nine people sharing a joyful experience.

Maybe the recipient remembers the coffee, but that doesn’t matter. What I remember is the feeling of walking back together afterward. There was just plain, simple joy, a shared sense that we had briefly stepped outside ourselves.

Since that day, I’ve spent less time thinking about the impact of kindness and more time thinking about participation.

An act of kindness doesn’t need to be large. It doesn’t need to be noticed. It doesn’t need to become a movement. It is enough to create a small moment of care.

And then, without intending it, we might discover that we were part of the very kindness we thought we were giving away.
