You read one verse that tells you you’re saved. It’s done. Settled. Then a few chapters later you read that you will be saved, as if it hasn’t happened yet. Then you find a verse that says you are being saved, something that’s still in progress.

So which is it?

If you’ve ever gotten tangled up in that, you’re in good company. Bible readers of every age and maturity run into it and scratch their heads. I’ve watched it happen in my classrooms with my students, in comment sections galore, and in conversations that turned into arguments because two people were using the same word in two different ways and didn’t realize it.

The answer is that the Bible uses “saved” in more than one way. But once you can see the different uses, a lot of confusing passages get much clearer.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" word is doing a lot of work.

In the Old Testament, “save” and “salvation” usually translate the Hebrew yasha and its noun yeshuah. In the New Testament, it’s usually the Greek sozo and its noun form soteria. Those words cover a wide range of experiences. They describe rescue from an army, surviving a storm, recovering from a disease, and the spiritual salvation of a person before God.

Most of us have one picture of the word “saved,” and most of the time it’s the moment we believed. So when a verse uses the word some other way, we either squeeze it into that picture or we get confused.

The fix is simple. Let the writer tell us what he meant. I use four questions on every passage, and I call it CAAP:

Context: What’s happening in the verses around it and in the book as a whole? How is that word used in other similar cases? Is there historical precedent for how the word is used?

Author: Who wrote it, and how does he use the word elsewhere?

Audience: Who first heard it, and what would they have understood?

Purpose: Why was it written, and what did the writer want his first readers to know or do?

The meaning the writer intended is the meaning that matters. Run a verse through those four questions and it’ll usually tell you which kind of “saved” you’re looking at.

There are four.

1. Saved From Danger

This is the oldest and most common, plain use of the word. It’s from this sense of the word that the rest come.

To be saved in this sense means to be rescued from a real, physical danger. An enemy army. A storm. A sickness. Persecution. Death. It’s the way we’d talk about someone being saved from a burning car. The danger is something you can see, and so is the rescue.

The first great salvation in Scripture looks exactly like that, in fact. Israel is trapped between the sea and Pharaoh’s chariots, and Moses tells them, “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD” (Exodus 14:13). By the end of the chapter: “Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians” (Exodus 14:30).

Saved meant alive on the far shore of the Red Sea.

The New Testament uses the word the same way in a lot of places. Peter steps onto the Sea of Galilee, looks at the wind, starts to sink, and cries out, “Lord, save me” (Matthew 14:30). He’s thinking about drowning in that moment, not eternal damnation.

Acts 27 through the four questions

This one shows how plain CAAP can make things.

The context is a shipwreck. Paul is a prisoner sailing for Rome when a storm drives the ship for two weeks (that’s bad), and Luke writes that “all hope that we should be saved was then taken away” (Acts 27:20). The author is Luke, who was on board, writing as an eyewitness. The audience is Theophilus, and through him every reader Luke expected to pick up the book. The purpose is to show God keeping His promise to bring Paul before Caesar.

So when Paul tells the soldiers, “Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved” (Acts 27:31), he means getting to shore alive. A few verses later he urges everyone to eat, “for this is for your health” (Acts 27:34). That word “health” is soteria, the same noun translated “salvation” elsewhere.

Healing

The same word works for sickness, too. Jesus tells the woman who’d been bleeding for twelve years, “thy faith hath made thee whole” (Mark 5:34). The Greek behind “made thee whole” is a form of sozo. She was saved from a disease that day, not hell.

James uses it the same way: “the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up” (James 5:15).

What about the soul?

This is where a lot of readers get tripped up and it’s totally understandable.

When we read “save your soul,” most of us hear something eternal. But in Hebrew thinking the soul, the nephesh (the whole living person), is the life itself. Peter says “eight souls were saved by water” in the flood (1 Peter 3:20). Luke counts “two hundred threescore and sixteen souls” on that ship in Acts 27 (Acts 27:37). They’re counting people being saved from physical danger.

Keep that in mind, because it changes how we read James.

The author is James, the brother of Jesus and a leader of the Jerusalem church. The audience is “the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad” (James 1:1), Jewish believers who grew up hearing “soul” the way the Hebrew Scriptures use it. The purpose is practical instruction to believers on how to live in Christlike community. The letter reads a lot like Proverbs and other Hebrew wisdom literature, short and direct wisdom about how faith shows up in everyday life. It’s very different from Paul’s or Peter’s letters in that way.

The context is a chain he lays out in chapter 1: “when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15). That’s the danger. A few verses later he tells his readers to “lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21). He’s writing to brethren, people who already believe, and telling them the word can save their lives from the death sin produces.

He closes the letter the same way. Right after the prayer of faith that saves the sick, he writes, “if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins” (James 5:19-20). The one who wanders is one of “you,” a member of the community. Turning him back saves his life.

Proverbs talks the same way: “He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die” (Proverbs 19:16). Proverbs is consistently concerned with the way this life is lived in wisdom and the here-and-now consequences of foolishness and wickedness.

So when all four questions are answered, I think James is consistently using the oldest sense of the word. Saving a soul means rescuing a living person from the death that sin and folly bring.

The first category: when the danger in a passage is physical, “saved” usually means rescued from that danger. Ask what the person is being saved from.

2. Saved

The other three categories are about spiritual salvation, and each one looks in a different direction: past, present, and future. The first looks back.

In this sense, salvation is something God has already done for the believer. Something accomplished. At the point of faith, God acted, and that act is finished. Paul writes, “according to his mercy he saved us” (Titus 3:5), and the Greek verb presents it as a whole, completed event. He saved us. It happened.

Ephesians 2 through the four questions

The context is a list of things God has already done for people who were “dead in trespasses and sins.” He “hath quickened us together with Christ... And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:1, 5-6). Made alive. Raised. Seated. Every one of those is done.

The author is Paul, writing in custody. The audience is mostly gentile believers in Asia Minor, people who were once outsiders. The purpose is to show them what God did to bring them into His family.

Then comes the verse most of us know by heart: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).

The Greek here is este sesosmenoi, a perfect tense construction (an action completed in the past with a result that continues into the present). The King James “are ye saved” keeps the present result. The New King James reads “you have been saved,” which shows the completed act behind it. God saved them, and they’re still standing in that completed work.

The second category: past-tense salvation looks back. It’s what God did when you believed.

3. Being Saved

This is the one that confuses people most, because it sounds like salvation isn’t finished, like eternal life is a gift that hasn’t finished being received yet. But that’s not quite right.

In this sense, salvation is God’s ongoing work in someone who already belongs to Him. The salvation that began when a person believed is still in progress, and God is the one carrying it through to the end.

1 Corinthians 1:18 through the four questions

The context is a church split into factions, some following Paul, some Apollos, some Peter, all of them proud of their own wisdom. The author is Paul, who founded that local church himself. The audience is believers who were judging their teachers by how polished they sounded. (God help us, we still do this today…) The purpose is to show that the message of the cross is divisive, actually, and it divides people into two groups.

Here’s how the King James says it: “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

That sounds like two fixed states, but the Greek uses two present participles (verb forms that describe something in progress): tois apollymenois and tois sozomenois. In this case, my beloved KJV is hiding something. A more precise rendering is “those who are perishing” and “us who are being saved.” Paul is describing two groups of people actively moving in opposite directions.

If you read the King James, you might wonder whether this comes from a different Greek text. It doesn’t. The Textus Receptus and the modern critical text read exactly the same here. The New King James, translated from the same Textus Receptus as the King James, says “us who are being saved.” The difference is a translation choice and it’s a great example of how translation work is more complex than most people realize.

The rest of the New Testament fills out the picture. Hebrews says Jesus “is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25). The saving is ongoing because His intercession is ongoing. Peter says believers “are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation” (1 Peter 1:5). And Paul puts it plainly: “he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6).

God started it. God finishes it. That’s the sense of “being saved” in the New Testament.

The third category: present-tense salvation looks at today. It’s God carrying through what He started in you.

4. Will Be Saved

The last category looks ahead.

In this sense, salvation is an outcome still to come. The believer hasn’t received it in full yet. It arrives when Christ returns and believers are delivered from God’s wrath and receive everything that was promised.

Paul writes to people who already believe, “now is our salvation nearer than when we believed” (Romans 13:11). Think about what that assumes. Their salvation is closer today than it was the day they first believed. That only makes sense if part of it is still coming.

Peter calls it salvation “ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:5). Hebrews says Christ will “appear the second time without sin unto salvation” to “them that look for him” (Hebrews 9:28). Each time, salvation is tied to a day that hasn’t arrived.

Romans 8:24 through the four questions

This verse ties the tenses together.

The context is suffering and waiting. All creation groans, and believers groan with it, “waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:23). The author is Paul, writing to a church he hadn’t yet visited. The audience is Jewish and gentile believers in Rome. The purpose is to set their present suffering against the glory still ahead.

Then Paul writes, “For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?” (Romans 8:24).

The verb “saved” there describes a completed action, so a closer rendering is “we were saved in hope.” And in the same breath, Paul says that hope holds onto something not yet seen. A past act aimed at a future outcome, both in one verse. God saved them, and the full experience of what He saved them for is still out ahead.

The fourth category: future-tense salvation looks ahead. It’s what God will finish when Christ returns.

Where This Matters

Here’s why any of this is worth your time. Take two passages people often struggle with.

Matthew 24:13. “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

Jesus is answering His disciples’ question about the destruction of the temple and the sign of His coming (Matthew 24:3), and He warns them about wars, persecution, false prophets, and great tribulation. Nine verses later He says, “except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved” (Matthew 24:22). That plainly means no one would survive physically. It’s the first category, physical survival.

So is verse 13 about surviving those days, about final salvation, or both? I’ll leave that one with you. The point is that the categories are here to help you make that call.

Philippians 2:12. “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

Read it with the immediate context in the letter. Paul has already said God will finish the work He began in them (1:6). He’s used “salvation” for his own expected physical release from prison (1:19), which the NIV translates “deliverance.” Chapter 2 opens with a plea for unity, one mind and one love, and the “your” in “your own salvation” is plural. Then verse 13 says, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

Philippians 1:29-30 add even more context: “unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; Having the same conflict which ye saw in me.”

People read verse 12 (work out your own salvation) as personal growth, but the context reveals something different. It shows you a church (multiple believers) facing physical persecution and imprisonment and then it tells them what to do in the face of those circumstances.

Read It the Way They Wrote It

Here are the four side by side.

Rescued: saved from a physical danger. Ask what the person is being saved from.

Saved: what God did when you believed.

Being saved: God carrying through what He started in you.

Will be saved: what God will finish when Christ returns.

The next time you come across “saved” or “salvation” in your Bible, slow down before you decide what it means. Ask the four questions. What’s the context? Who’s the author? Who’s the audience? What’s the purpose? Then ask which category fits.

The writers of Scripture used this word carefully and they used it in more than one way. If we want to understand what they meant, we have to read it the way they wrote it.

I wrote a little book explaining how to find the Context, Author, Audience, and Purpose to better understand the Bible. No councils convened to condemn it. No treatises were written to refute it, because there was nothing left circulating in the Christian world after the earlier fathers had successfully refuted it.. A movement that Irenaeus, Tertullian, Hippolytus, and Origen treated as an emergency, something urgent enough to justify volumes of rebuttal, simply disappeared from the historical record. For a thousand years and more, if you wanted to know what a Gnostic believed, you had exactly one option. You had to take the word of the men who beat them. Their own writings were gone.

That should strike you as odd. It struck me as odd too, the first time I noticed it. A belief system doesn’t usually vanish that cleanly. Somebody usually keeps a book or a few letters. Somebody’s grandmother usually passes something down. But Gnosticism, as an organized, self-describing movement, goes dark. And it stays dark until 1945.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" you’re new to this series, catch up on Part 1, where I called Gnosticism a cancer, an ancient one, and argued it’s still active in the church today, just under different names. Part 2, written by my friend Grant Skelton, walked through what the Gnostics actually taught: Yaldabaoth the false creator, Sophia’s flawed offspring, the pleroma, and the men who took the fight to them directly, Irenaeus and Tertullian chief among them.

So the fathers won that fight. The question this article has to answer is simple. What happened after they won it?

The answer starts with silence, and the silence has an explanation. The Gnostic texts themselves didn’t survive the fight. Not most of them…at least, not in any form we could read directly, until a discovery in the Egyptian desert changed that. Until then, every word we had about Gnostic belief came filtered through the men who set out to destroy it. Imagine trying to understand a person’s convictions only by reading what their worst enemy said about them in court. That is the historical record we had for a millennium and a half.

Until the Nag Hammadi documents were discovered.

A Tumor Doesn’t Mean a Cure

Here’s the thing about a cancer that goes into remission. Remission is not the same as cured. The disease can sit dormant for years while the underlying cells that caused it are still very much alive, waiting on the right conditions to come back.

That is exactly what happened with the dualist instinct at the heart of Gnosticism. The organized Gnostic movement of the second and third centuries was gone. But the core disease, the belief that the material world is fundamentally corrupt, that a lesser or evil power made it, and that only a spiritually enlightened few can see past it, those ideas didn’t die. They waited to be picked up again. And in the tenth century, in the Byzantine province we’d now call Bulgaria, it found a new host.

His name was Bogomil, a village priest, and the movement that took his name taught a familiar story. A good and distant God. A material world corrupted by an evil power. A visible church that was itself part of the corruption rather than the cure for it. The Bogomils spread across the Balkans over the following centuries, and by the twelfth century, the same dualist instinct had traveled west and taken root in southern France under a new name: the Cathars.

The Cathars, centered around the town of Albi, taught that the physical world was the handiwork of an evil creator, not the true God, and that the God of the Old Testament could not be the Father of Jesus Christ. Sound familiar? It should. It’s Marcion and the Apocryphon of John speaking medieval French. The Cathars practiced a rite called the consolamentum, a spiritual initiation meant to free the believer from the material prison and set them on the path back to the light. The consolamentum was the sole sacrament of the Cathars, acting as both baptism and ordination. It erased all sins, conferred the Holy Spirit, and made the recipient a “Perfect,” obligating them to live a strict life of poverty, chastity, and pacifism until death. Historians still debate whether the Cathars descended directly from the ancient Gnostics through some hidden lineage, or whether the same dualist impulse simply reinvented itself independently, generation after generation, whenever the conditions were right. For our purposes, the answer doesn’t change much. It’s the same tumor. It just grew in a new body.

Rome recognized the shape of the threat immediately, the same way Irenaeus once had. In 1209, Pope Innocent III authorized a crusade against the Cathars. Whole towns in Languedoc (long-goo-dock) were put to the sword. The last major Cathar stronghold, a mountain fortress called Montsegur (mawn-say-GOOR), fell in 1244. Scattered remnants held out in the hills of northern Italy for a few more decades, but by the early fourteenth century, the movement was finished.

And this time, it stayed finished. Whatever had resurfaced in the Bogomils and the Cathars did not find a third host. The dualist impulse went quiet again, and this time the silence held for six more centuries.

Sealed in a Jar

Grant told you the story of Nag Hammadi in Part 2, so I won’t repeat it here. You know about the jar, the thirteen leather-bound books, the fourth-century monks who hid them rather than surrender them to the fires their opponents had lit. What’s worth adding here is what happened after the discovery, because the texts sitting in a jar in 1945 and the texts sitting on a bookstore shelf in your local Barnes and Noble are separated by more than just distance. They’re separated by decades of academic grinding.

Antiquities dealers scattered the manuscripts across private hands before scholars could get a clean look at the collection. Cold War politics slowed international cooperation. Competing scholars guarded their portions of the discovery like territory. It took until 1977, more than thirty years after two farmers dug up that jar, for James M. Robinson to finally publish a complete English translation of the Nag Hammadi library. Only after that did the material move out of specialist journals and into the hands of readers who weren’t already fluent in Coptic.

Robinson’s translation gave scholars the raw material. Elaine Pagels gave it a voice ordinary readers could actually hear. In 1979, two years after the complete Nag Hammadi library appeared in English, Pagels published The Gnostic Gospels, a slim book aimed squarely at ordinary readers. It won the National Book Award, and it did something academic translations rarely manage. It made the Gnostics sound sympathetic, even appealing, framing them less as heretics and more as an alternate Christianity that lost out to a more rigid, more political orthodoxy. That framing didn’t stay confined to a shelf, either. It planted the seed. Twenty-four years later, Bart Ehrman would pick that same seed up and grow it into a bestseller.

Enter Ehrman

Bart Ehrman chairs the religious studies department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was raised in a conservative evangelical environment, the kind many of us reading this would recognize, and his academic study of the biblical text eventually moved him away from orthodox Christian belief altogether. In 2003, he published a book called Lost Christianities, aimed not at fellow scholars but at ordinary readers, and it did something Robinson’s 1977 translation never could. It sold.

Ehrman’s argument in that book is straightforward enough. Early Christianity, he says, was never one unified thing with a few heretical splinter groups on the fringe. It was a genuine free-for-all: Ebionites, Marcionites, Gnostics, and the group that eventually called itself orthodox, all competing for the same territory, none of them possessing some obvious, self-evident claim to being the “real” Christianity from the start. In Ehrman’s telling, orthodoxy is simply the party that won. Winners write the history books, and losers get remembered, if they’re remembered at all, as heretics.

I want to be fair to him. Ehrman is not a sloppy scholar, and there’s a version of the observation he’s making that’s true. Early Christianity did face real internal battles, and history is written by the side left standing. That’s probably more true of the Catholic Church’s history of itself than any institution I can think of, maybe besides the ancient Egyptians. But I think the frame itself, “who won,” is the wrong question to be asking. And here’s why.

The Body’s Immune System

Go back to what Gnosticism actually was, the thing I wrote about in Part 1. It wasn’t a rival denomination arguing over baptism or church polity. It wasn’t a disagreement about secondary matters that Christians of good conscience could hash out over coffee and still leave as friends. It was a foreign invasion aimed straight at the vital organs of the faith. Who God is. What a human being is. What sin actually is and where it comes from. What salvation is and how a person receives it. Every one of those core claims, the ones without which there is no gospel left to preach, Gnosticism rewrote from the ground up. To gnostics, the God of Israel became a blind, bumbling impostor. The material world, the same world God called good in Genesis 1, became a prison built by a lesser power. Salvation stopped being something received by faith and became something achieved by an elite few possessing secret knowledge the rest of us were never given.

That’s not a sibling doctrine competing to be heard inside an otherwise unified family. That’s a cancer, exactly as I said back in Part 1, attacking the body from the inside while wearing the body’s own clothes.

So when Ehrman frames the outcome as a matter of who won the political fight, I think he’s mistaking the immune response for the disease. Orthodoxy didn’t triumph because it had better political instincts or louder bishops. It held because it was already unified with the full witness of Scripture, Genesis through Revelation, the same God, the same good creation, the same reality of sin, the same promise of a bodily resurrection, standing coherently as one story. Gnosticism never had that. It had to invent an entirely new mythology, layer upon layer of Aeons and archons, just to explain away what the text plainly said. Orthodoxy didn’t need to win a vote. It needed to stay faithful to what had already been handed down, and it did. That consistency is why it survived a fight in the second century, why it survived the resurgence in the tenth and twelfth, and why the version of the faith we hold today still carries the same core claims those fathers were defending.

The full witness of Scripture stood unified against Gnosticism. That’s why orthodoxy was never going to lose.

Where We’re Headed

The tumor that went quiet for a thousand years, then resurfaced in Bulgaria, then again in southern France, hasn’t stopped looking for new tissue to invade. It found academic respectability through Robinson and Pagels. It found a mass audience through Ehrman. And right now, in ways most Christians walking into church this Sunday have never been taught to recognize, it’s found its way into deconstruction content, into pop-theology, into assumptions many of us carry into our own Bible study without ever asking where they came from.

That’s where Part 4 picks up. I’ll see you there.

New Book: The Fall of Jerusalem

Written by Josephus, Distilled by BLK SHP Scott, the newest addition to the BLK SHP Pocket Library

BLK SHP Scott

Something significant happened in Judea almost 40 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection. It was biblical in every way you could think: an epic, prophetic judgment of God’s covenant people, Israel, for the rejection of the Messiah and persecution of His Church. Preceded by signs and wonders. An abomination in the Holy of Holies that proved it was empty. The Second Temple was destroyed. The people scattered.

The saga was more than one event. It was a procession of events that matched Daniel’s prophecy in chapter 9 and Jesus’ prophetic warning in Matthew 24. And it taught us something about the nature of prophecy, too. It showed us that prophecy was as much about patterns as it was about predictions. As Dr. Chuck Missler famously stated: “To the non-Jewish mind, prophecy is prediction. To the Jewish mind, prophecy is pattern.”

Of course, eschatologists have debated its meaning concerning the history and future of Scripture’s narrative. I have my own opinion, and I’ll share that soon on BLK SHP Bible Talk on YouTube. This post is just about the history of the event.

The original history was recorded from two perspectives. Tacitus wrote from the Roman political perspective as a Roman Senator. And Flavius Josephus wrote from the Jewish perspective as a Jewish military officer, Pharisee, and priest. Both are valuable, but it’s Josephus’ epic history called The Jewish War that gives us the most detail.

<a class="image-link
