on protective equipment and walked into hospital rooms to care for patients with a virus we barely understood.

Last week, I went to Costco because the internet scared me.

I’ve been thinking about that contrast ever since.

I remember the panic at the beginning of COVID. There was a Facebook group called Quarantine Chugs where people drank together online while we waited to find out what was happening to the world.

At the hospital, I saw the first COVID patient admitted where I worked. I remember us covering the patient from head to toe in bed linens for transport from the ER to their room. We were wearing the protective equipment we used when caring for patients with tuberculosis.

Everything felt unfamiliar. We were figuring things out as we went, and you could feel the fear around us.

But I distinctly remember feeling calm.

I trusted my body. I believed I would be okay. Whether that was confidence, ignorance, or simply the belief I needed to get through my shifts, it stayed with me.

I went on to care for hundreds of patients with COVID. It was about two years before I knew I had contracted it myself.

At the time, I connected that experience to my belief that I would be okay. Looking back, I can’t know why I avoided a known infection for so long, and I wouldn’t claim that a mindset can prevent a virus. People who were hopeful and careful still became terribly sick.

Choose wisely what you want to believe in, you end up being right either way.

What I do know is that my belief changed how I experienced those years.

I could show up, take precautions, do my work, and come home without spending every remaining hour imagining the worst.

Last week, I needed to remember that version of myself.

I started seeing messages about preparing for disruptions to electricity, water, and food. Some reflected real emergency preparedness advice. Others arrived with the kind of certainty and urgency that made it feel as though something terrible was already on its way.

And I kept looking.

Then I was at Costco. Then I was on Amazon. Then I was thinking of one more thing my family might need if we lost power or couldn’t get water.

Some of those purchases were useful. Having basic supplies is sensible.

But after three or four days of preparing on and off, I stepped back and looked at what I was doing.

I had started spending my present inside a future I was afraid of.

My family was here. Our home was functioning. There were ordinary things to enjoy and meaningful things to do.

Meanwhile, my attention was somewhere else, rehearsing how everything could fall apart.

That is where this connects to manifestation for me.

I believe our beliefs help shape our lives. I also know we don’t control every event that happens to us. Illness, loss, and hardship are not proof that someone thought the wrong thoughts.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" repeatedly give our attention to can influence what we notice, what we expect, and what we do next.

Last week, fear was shaping my choices. It was deciding what I bought and how I spent my time. Even after I had taken practical steps, it kept asking for more.

Another search. Another video. Another order.

I could feel how little peace any of it was giving me.

During COVID, I had limited how much news I consumed after the first few days. I stayed informed enough to do my job, but I didn’t keep returning to every frightening possibility.

Outside of work, I noticed people spending time outdoors. More cooking at home. Fewer crowds. Small moments of connection in a strange and difficult time.

Those things didn’t erase what was happening in the hospital. They gave me somewhere else to place my attention.

I want to make that choice again.

I can prepare my household and then let myself enjoy being in it.

I can care about the world and still spend an afternoon building something I believe in.

I can acknowledge uncertainty without treating every frightening prediction as a preview of my own life.

A bit of de-lulu with a side of woo woo.

At the risk of sounding a little woo woo, I think about attention as energy. When I spend hours feeding a frightening story, I feel depleted. The story seems to grow stronger while I have less left for the people and work I love.

Whatever language you use for that, I suspect you know the feeling.

So I’m returning to a belief that has helped me before:

Whatever comes, I trust myself to meet it and find my next step.

Spiritually, I choose to believe that even difficult chapters can hold something that serves my growth. carry over from one business to another.

The details change. What you need to learn changes. But there are questions you have to answer:

Who do I want to help? What problem do I understand? What can I offer that would make someone’s life better?

An LLC can give a business a legal structure. A website can give it a place to live.

Neither can answer those questions for me.

So before I get too caught up in how Building in Alignment should look, I need to get clearer about what I want it to do.

And this is the clearest answer I have right now:

I want to help other women create more freedom in their lives.

Freedom to make choices about their time. To explore an interest without immediately dismissing it. To build something they believe in, even if their experience so far has been in something completely different.

I know what it feels like to want that and have no idea where to start.

I had a vision before I had proof

When I thought about leaving nursing, I pictured a life with more variety and more say over my days.

Some days, I wanted the freedom to work from bed. Other days, I wanted to be on site, leading projects and watching a house come back to life.

With real estate, I also had a very specific vision: beautifully renovate older homes in underserved communities and rent them to people who would care for them like their own.

And that vision has become real.

I have renovated homes that are over a hundred years old. Fully gutted them, brought them back, and found families to live in them.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Leave the job. Start the business. Move. Finally become the person you keep imagining.

But you still have to wake up with yourself the next morning. With your thoughts, your anxiety, your habits, and whatever life has decided to put on your calendar.

I’ve learned that how I meet that morning matters.

Three simple practices have changed how I feel and how I move through my day: making my bed, meditating, and journaling.

They sound ordinary. Their effect on my life has been anything but.

1. Make your bed before the day starts making demands.

Making my bed gives me an immediate sense of accomplishment.

I haven’t answered a message or worked through my to do list, but I’ve already followed through on something. I said I would do it, and I did.

There is something quietly powerful about beginning your day with that evidence.

I wouldn’t claim that a neatly tucked sheet convinces your brain you’ve conquered the entire day. But for me, it creates a small feeling of capability that carries into whatever comes next.

One thing is done. I can do the next thing.

I would argue that it helps me feel more productive and even more confident. There’s one less unfinished task in my line of sight, and I’ve created a little order before stepping into a day I can’t entirely control.

At this point, making my bed is so automatic that I feel off balance until I do it.

Try it tomorrow. Get up, pull up the sheets, straighten the comforter, and arrange the pillows. It doesn’t need to look like a hotel. Give yourself a finished task.

Then notice how it feels to leave the room.

2. Give yourself ten minutes before giving everyone else your attention.

I am naturally someone who has to manage my anxiety. If I don’t pay attention to it, it can consume far more of my day than I want it to.

Meditation helps me ground myself.

I like to sit for at least ten minutes in the morning, often listening to Tibetan singing bowls. That time gives me space to notice what’s happening inside me before I get pulled into everything happening around me.

Sometimes my mind is busy the entire time.

I remember something I need to do. I start planning. I have an idea. I realize I’ve been thinking for several minutes instead of paying attention to my breath.

Then I come back.

That return is part of the practice.

Some of my best ideas arrive during meditation. I save them to explore afterward. I’m learning that I can let a thought appear without immediately turning it into another task.

And yes, mornings are busy. Ten minutes can feel like a lot when you’re trying to get everyone out the door.

But I’ve found it worth getting out of bed ten minutes earlier. On a tighter morning, five minutes is a perfectly reasonable place to start.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Put one page between your thoughts and the rest of your day.

The third habit is journaling.

I usually do this during the day. Find a time that fits your life well enough that you’ll return to it.

One small page is enough.

Journaling has helped me with anxiety, creativity, and my overall sense of wellbeing. It gives my thoughts somewhere to go. Once they’re on paper, I can look at them more clearly instead of carrying all of them around at once.

Sometimes I discover what’s bothering me halfway through a sentence. Sometimes I find an idea I want to pursue. Sometimes I just need to admit that I’m overwhelmed.

You don’t need an interesting life to journal. Now I write about my feelings on the internet.

Somehow, this is part of my plan.

Although calling it a plan is generous.

It Started With a Nudge

A month ago, I started writing here because I felt a nudge. I kept thinking about sharing what I was learning as I stepped away from nursing and built a different kind of life.

I thought maybe another woman would recognize herself in my experience. Maybe she had a good job, a steady paycheck, and a quiet feeling that she wanted something else.

I wanted to encourage her to listen.

Preferably while the message was still a nudge, before it became a brick falling on her head.

I wanted to show that you can want more freedom even when you’re grateful for the life you already have. That you can take your own curiosity seriously. That a career you once loved doesn’t have to be the only work you ever do.

So I made myself a promise: I would write on Substack for one full year.

Apparently, I made that commitment before considering the small detail that I am a very private person.

More Tabs Open Than Answers

Now, every week, I open a blank page and try to decide how much of myself I’m willing to put on it.

Sometimes I wonder why I’m writing what feels like a diary in public.

Who is this for? Where is this going? Am I supposed to have a strategy?

And, since I’m being honest: how do people make money doing this?

I have been looking into that last question. So far, I have more tabs open than answers.

What I do know is that I enjoy writing. I enjoy taking something tangled in my head and finding the words for it. I enjoy the possibility that someone might read those words and feel a little less alone.

I just don’t know what that becomes.

That’s an uncomfortable place for someone who would really appreciate knowing whether all this effort is leading somewhere.

Especially after leaving a steady paycheck.

There is a part of me that wants every new interest to come with proof that it will work. Ideally, a business plan, an income projection, and a reassuring person who says, “Yes, Viktoriya. This is definitely the right direction.”

Instead, I have a feeling and a one-year commitment.

Wonderful.

My Curiosity Has No Concerns About My Calendar

Something I’ve been learning about myself is how much I need to learn.

In Human Design, I’m a Manifesting Generator. The idea of having multiple interests and following what excites me gives me language for a pattern I already recognize in my life.

I don’t need a system to give me permission, but it helps to hear that curiosity doesn’t automatically mean I’m scattered.

Because sometimes I wish I could be the person who finds one thing and happily does it for the next thirty years.

I spent eleven years in nursing. I loved parts of that work deeply. And I kept getting curious about what else I could do.

During COVID, that curiosity led me to the stock market. When prices fell and people were afraid, I started buying. I was learning as I went, trying to understand a world I hadn’t been taught much about.

Then I began thinking about diversification.

That led me to real estate.

Which sounds like one interest until you’re managing a renovation, getting your real estate license, talking to lenders, answering tenants, and discovering how many decisions can fit inside one supposedly straightforward house project.

It is a completely different world from nursing.

And I love how much I’ve had to learn.

There are days when that learning is exhausting. There are also days when I realize I can handle a conversation or a problem that would have intimidated me a year ago.

That feeling means something to me.

Now, in the middle of all of this, I’m writing a newsletter, trying to understand how it might become a business, and learning astrology.

I can’t make this shit up.

My curiosity apparently has no concerns about my calendar.

Subscribe now

It Makes More Sense From the Inside

Maybe that’s why I’m writing this.

Because I know I’m not the only person with a life that makes more sense from the inside than it does on a résumé.

The experiences connect for me. Nursing taught me to listen and make decisions under pressure. Investing made me curious about how money works. Real estate keeps teaching me about leadership, relationships, and trusting my judgment.

Writing gives me somewhere to make sense of it all.

But when someone asks, “What exactly are you doing?” I still don’t have a tidy answer.

And I’m learning how much permission I’ve been waiting for that answer to give me.

Permission to keep going. To enjoy something while I’m new at it. To spend time on an interest before I can explain its value in dollars.

I do want this to make money. I’m building a life with more freedom, and income is part of that.

I also want to give this enough time to discover what I can bring to it.

One month is early. I know that. Still, knowing it doesn’t stop me from wanting answers.

For Now, I’m Keeping the Promise

So for now, I’m keeping the promise.

I’ll write. I’ll learn. I’ll keep looking into the business side. And I’ll share what I can, even when pressing publish makes me feel a little exposed.

Maybe you’re in the early part of something, too. The part where you care about it more than you know how to explain it. Where you’re excited one day and questioning yourself the next.

That’s where I am.

I have no big reveal about where this is going.

Just a small discovery: I enjoy being here.

For someone who wants to know how everything will turn out, that is a surprisingly difficult thing to let be enough.

This Sunday, I’m letting it be enough to write the next page.

-Viktoriya

Share Building in Alignment

Thanks for reading Building in Alignment! I wanted to give my own work the attention and energy it deserved. But that freedom came with a kind of stress I’m still learning to live with: not knowing exactly when the money will come, how long a project will take, or what the market will do next.

There are days when I miss the reassurance of knowing what I would earn. I can admit that and still remember why I left.

When my head is clear, I still feel strongly that I made the right decision. I wanted to invest in myself full time, in real estate, in becoming a better leader, and in working for myself. I wanted to find out what I could build if I gave myself that chance.

That feeling is harder to hear when I’m anxious, but it keeps returning when the fear settles. And I’m learning to trust it without pretending this choice is easy.

I would love to tell you that being heavily invested in real estate means I feel confident about the market.

Right now, it means I have a lot invested in something I cannot control.

Money. Time. Work. A vision for our future.

And when the market I’m working in feels stalled, fear gets loud.

Did I make the right decisions? How long will this take? What if things get harder before they get better?

I don’t have answers to all of those questions. But I do know this: I’m not giving up on real estate.

I’m learning how to keep going.

There is something about this time that feels bigger than my own circumstances. Across the world, people are living through war, devastating weather, financial strain, and health struggles. The experiences are vastly different, and so are the consequences. But uncertainty keeps showing up in our conversations, our decisions, and the way we imagine the future.

It feels like so many of us are going through something that is reshaping our lives or at least reshaping what we thought we knew about them.

Some people understand this season through political events. Others through economic cycles, astrology, or the patterns of history. I sometimes look through more than one of those lenses. They help me reflect, even when they cannot tell me what happens next.

And that is the part I keep coming back to: how do we live when we don’t know what happens next?

Having money can provide options and protection. It matters. But even financial security cannot promise that everyone you love will be healthy, that the world will feel safe, or that life will follow your plans.

I suspect many people who look secure from the outside are carrying fear, too.

For me, the work starts with allowing myself to admit it.

On fear.

I don’t try to talk myself out of every uncomfortable feeling anymore. When fear comes up, I name it. Fear. Anxiety. Uncertainty.

I let myself feel it. I notice what happens in my body and give it some room. Often, the intensity begins to ease. When it does, I feel grateful for that little bit of relief.

Then another wave may come, and I practice again.

Sometimes I take a long walk. Sometimes I need to step away before I can look at the numbers clearly. And sometimes there is a real problem asking for my attention, so I deal with it.

Feeling the fear helps me hear what it is telling me without letting it make every decision.

Because I don’t want to freeze.

I also don’t want to make a reckless decision just to prove that I’m brave.

In real estate, continuing looks different for me this year.

2025 felt like expansion. More movement. More deals. More possibility.

So far, 2026 has felt like constriction. I’ve done about half as many deals as I did in 2025. The deals I have done have taken more effort. I’m spending more time looking, running numbers, and deciding whether a property is worth taking on.

I have slowed down the number of homes I’m buying. I’m paying closer attention to what I can comfortably carry.

But I will certainly not say no to a good deal.

A decent deal? Right now, I’m willing to pass.

I need more room in the numbers to feel comfortable. Room for repairs to cost more than expected. Room for a property to take longer. Room for the market to disappoint me.

The money has to make sense for the time, effort, and responsibility involved.

I cannot buy a house on the assumption that appreciation will rescue the deal. I need to see value in the purchase price, the improvements I can make, and the rental income the property can realistically support.

My plan is still to buy houses, add value, refinance when the numbers and financing allow, and rent them out.

But I need to be able to carry a property if refinancing takes longer than I hoped. A plan has to leave room for delays, because I’ve learned how often they happen.

That is how I intend to keep building without getting in over my head.

I don’t know what 2027 will bring. I don’t know the timing or depth of any correction, and I’m not counting on the appreciation we saw in the last several years.

I still believe real estate can be a favorable asset when it is bought at a good price, improved thoughtfully, and supported by workable numbers.

That belief hasn’t disappeared. My standards have gotten higher.

And maybe that is part of what this season is teaching me.

I can believe in the future I’m building and still change the pace. I can pass on a property and remain committed to real estate. I can feel afraid and still make a careful, worthwhile decision.

If you’re in a season that is changing your plans, your perspective, or your sense of security, I don’t have a promise that everything will work out exactly as you hoped.

I’m living with those questions, too.

But I keep reminding myself that there is usually a next step I can take. A number to check. A conversation to have. A decision to make after I’ve given myself time to breathe.

Some days, continuing means buying the house.

Some days, it means walking away from the deal and having the patience to look again.

I’m afraid. I’m still here.

What I know for sure…

What I know for sure is that the most uncomfortable seasons of my life have had the greatest impact on who I have become.

I couldn’t see that while I was living through them. I wanted relief. I wanted answers. I wanted to know when I would feel like myself again.

Looking back, I can see how much those seasons changed me. I made decisions I had been avoiding. I learned what I could carry, what I needed to release, and where I needed to trust myself.

I am deeply grateful for those difficult times. That gratitude took time. It came as I began to recognize how much of the woman I am today was shaped by what I once wished would hurry up and end.

I believe those are the seasons when we jump timelines. When something shifts so deeply that we begin making different choices, and those choices take our lives somewhere we couldn’t have imagined before.

When everything feels comfortable, I can put off the questions that might change my life. Discomfort makes them harder to ignore.

What am I holding on to? What needs to change? What do I actually want to build?

I’m learning that growth can happen in several areas of my life at once. A difficult season in business can change how I relate to money, how I communicate, how I care for myself, and how much I trust my own judgment.

That doesn’t make it easy. There are still days when I wish the lesson would come with a little less anxiety.

But remembering what I’ve already lived through gives me a reason to keep going.

If you’re in a season that is changing your plans, your perspective, or your sense of security, I won’t pretend to know what it will mean for you. I’m still discovering what this one means for me.

For now, I’m figuring out how to build a life I believe in while trusting myself through the uncertain parts. Maybe you are, too.

-Vikoriya

Subscribe now

Share

I Know How to Push. Put something important to me at risk and I can work for twelve hours straight trying to make sure it turns out the way I need it to.

For most of my life, I considered this one of my greatest strengths.

Lately, I’ve been wondering if it can also be one of my greatest weaknesses.

Because sometimes the most productive thing you can do is stop pushing.

Not quit.

Not procrastinate.

Not avoid your responsibilities and announce that “the universe will handle it.”

I mean recognizing when you have done what is yours to do and when continuing to push is no longer creating progress, only resistance.

That distinction is becoming very important to me in this season of my life.

I don’t believe everything is within our control

This can be uncomfortable to admit, especially for people who are used to making things happen.

There are circumstances we cannot control.

There is timing we cannot control.

There are other people and their decisions.

There are opportunities that aren’t ready yet, information we don’t have yet, and things unfolding behind the scenes that we cannot see.

And I have noticed something about myself:

When life becomes uncertain, my instinct is not to sit with uncertainty.

My instinct is to do something about it.

Make another phone call.

Come up with another plan.

Research another option.

Work another few hours.

Make a decision.

Fix it.

Move it.

Control it.

Because doing something gives me the temporary feeling that I have regained control.

But action taken primarily to relieve anxiety is very different from action taken because it is actually the right next step.

I am learning to tell the difference.

Certainty has always made me feel safe

I crave certainty more than I sometimes like to admit.

A huge driving force in my life has been creating stability for myself and my family.

Financial stability.

A stable home.

A stable future.

Options.

Freedom.

There were seasons of my life when that drive served me extraordinarily well. It made me resourceful. It made me disciplined. It made me willing to do difficult things.

But now I am in a building phase where certainty isn’t always available.

Projects take longer than expected.

People don’t always do what they say they will do.

Business has seasons.

Opportunities unfold on timelines I didn’t choose.

You can make a good decision without receiving immediate proof that it was the right one.

And that last part may be the hardest for me.

I want the evidence.

I want the result.

I want life to say:

Yes, Viktoriya. You chose correctly. Here is your confirmation.

Preferably by tomorrow.

Life apparently has other plans.

There is a particular kind of danger in acting from urgency

When I feel uncertainty, I want to act.

But I am starting to notice that sometimes what I call taking action is really an attempt to make an uncomfortable feeling disappear.

If I make another decision, maybe I won’t feel anxious.

If I work harder, maybe I’ll feel safe.

If I find another solution, maybe I won’t have to wonder what’s going to happen.

The problem is that there is no finish line when the thing you’re trying to outrun is uncertainty.

There will always be something else to solve.

Something else to check.

Something else to worry about.

Something else you could be doing.

I could easily respond to this particular chapter of my life by working harder and harder until I burn myself out—and then call it ambition.

Or I can become curious about why doing less feels so threatening.

Maybe the lesson isn’t to become more productive.

Maybe it’s to become more discerning about where my energy actually creates a return.

Twelve hours of work is not automatically more valuable than four

This idea is changing the way I think about productivity.

We have been conditioned to measure effort in hours.

Long day = productive.

Exhausted = committed.

Busy = important.

But I don’t believe that anymore.

I can spend twelve hours reacting, worrying, checking, correcting and jumping between problems and accomplish less than I can in four focused hours when I know exactly what deserves my attention.

The goal isn’t to do less because I don’t care.

It is to stop wasting energy on things that don’t become better simply because I worry about them longer.

There is an enormous difference.

Sometimes doing less means that the work I do choose to do becomes much more powerful.

I have already planted a lot of seeds

This may be the real lesson underneath all of it.

I have spent years planting.

I changed careers.

I invested.

I bought properties.

I renovated houses.

I built relationships.

I made mistakes.

I learned.

I took risks.

I created opportunities that didn’t exist before.

I made decisions that required tremendous courage before I had any guarantee they would work.

And now there are moments when both my intuition and the astrology I follow seem to be asking the same question:

Can you trust what you have already built?

Can I trust the seeds I have planted without digging them up every few days to make sure they are growing?

Can I trust decisions without constantly trying to manufacture confirmation?

Can I stay the course without mistaking temporary uncertainty for a sign that I need to change direction?

That is much harder than it sounds.

Releasing control is not the same as becoming passive

I want to be very clear about this, because trust the universe can become a convenient excuse for avoiding responsibility.

That isn’t what I’m talking about.

I will still make the phone call that needs to be made.

I will still show up.

I will still look at the numbers.

I will still make difficult decisions.

I will still hold people accountable.

I will still change direction when the evidence tells me something isn’t working.

But after I have done what is mine to do, I don’t want to spend another eight hours mentally trying to control what happens next.

That isn’t my responsibility.

That’s anxiety wearing a productivity costume.

And I’m becoming much better at recognizing it.

Maybe this is what this season is actually teaching me

I have a feeling this lesson is going to keep coming up for me.

There will be moments when my natural instinct is to grip harder.

To control more.

To force an answer.

To make a move simply because waiting feels intolerable.

And those moments may be the real test.

Not whether I can make things happen.

I already know that I can.

The question is whether I can recognize when making things happen is actually interfering with something that needs time to unfold.

Whether I can work without overworking.

Lead without controlling.

Care without obsessing.

Prepare without catastrophizing.

Act without acting from fear.

And trust without becoming passive.

Maybe doing less isn’t always about slowing down.

Maybe it’s about finally understanding that my energy is a resource—and learning not to spend it fighting things I cannot control.

I don’t know exactly how everything I am building right now will unfold.

That sentence alone is uncomfortable for me to write.

But I do know I have planted the seeds.

I know the decisions I have made.

I know what I am building toward.

And this is where astrology has become especially useful to me.

Not because I expect the planets to tell me exactly what will happen next.

They don’t.

But astrology gives me a language for the season I am in.

It helps me notice when the same themes keep repeating. It shows me where I may be asked to examine an old pattern instead of immediately reacting to it. And sometimes, knowing that I am in a period that emphasizes patience, values, control or trust is enough to make me stop before turning discomfort into another unnecessary decision.

I don’t see a difficult transit as something happening to me.

I try to see it as a question.

What is this asking me to learn?

Right now, I think the question is whether I can trust myself without constantly needing external confirmation that everything is going according to plan.

Whether I can recognize that there are seasons for initiating and seasons for allowing.

Seasons for pushing forward and seasons for watching closely.

Seasons when effort moves something—and seasons when more effort only creates more resistance.

Astrology doesn’t remove my responsibility to choose.

If anything, it makes me more conscious of how I am choosing.

Am I making this decision because it is aligned with where I want to go?

Or am I making it because I cannot tolerate the uncertainty of staying still?

That is the question I want to carry with me through this season.

I have planted the seeds.

My job is to continue tending what is mine, stay awake enough to recognize when action is truly required, and trust that not every stage of growth needs my interference.

Maybe that is one of the reasons I have always been drawn to astrology.

It reminds me that life moves in cycles.

Nothing stays in one season forever.

There is a time to initiate, a time to build, a time to reassess, and sometimes a time to simply let what you have already set in motion unfold.

I am learning not to confuse that last one with doing nothing.

Sometimes the next level of productivity isn’t doing more.

Sometimes it’s understanding the season you’re in and knowing when you’ve done enough.

-Viktoriya

Subscribe now

Share

I Bought the House. Not new paint, updated lighting, and a prettier kitchen.

It needed to be completely gutted.

I had imagined this part. On the vision board I made in my backyard, I had pictured myself walking through old houses, working with contractors, choosing finishes, and bringing neglected spaces back to life.

Now I had the house. The only problem was that I still didn’t have anyone to renovate it.

Then I remembered someone.

I had met him nine or ten years earlier. We hadn’t stayed closely connected, but I knew he worked in construction—and, more importantly, that he had experience working with real estate investors. So I reached out.

At the time, it felt practical. I had bought an old house that needed an enormous amount of work, and I needed someone who understood what I was trying to do.

I had no idea I was calling the man who would become my husband.

We were not going to work together

We met to discuss the renovation.

Almost immediately, it became clear that working together might not be a great idea.

We both had strong opinions.

We both liked to be in control.

We saw certain things differently, and neither of us seemed particularly interested in quietly going along with the other.

We decided we would probably butt heads too much to take on the project together.

That should have been the end of it.

Instead, we began spending more and more time together. The renovation partnership didn’t happen—but something else did. There was an ease underneath all those strong opinions. A familiarity. A trust. He made me feel safe. A sense that being around him made my life feel fuller, lighter, and more alive.

And then I did something completely out of character.

Three weeks later, I moved in with him.

Even writing that now sounds slightly unhinged.

At that point, I had been divorced for 10 years. I had spent a decade building a life on my own, raising my kids, making my own decisions, and learning how to depend on myself.

I was practical. Cautious. Someone who thought things through and considered every possible risk. Moving in with a man after three weeks was not something I would have advised anyone else to do.

But beneath the fear, I felt something very clear.

I felt happy.

And by that point, I was beginning to understand that happiness could be its own form of direction.

The help I couldn’t have planned for

When I made that vision board, I thought I was imagining a career.

I saw the houses, the renovations, the freedom, and the life I could create through real estate.

I didn’t see him.

I didn’t know that pursuing something that lit me up would bring me back to a person I had met almost a decade earlier.

I didn’t know that the contractor I called for help with one house would become my husband, my partner, and someone my children could feel safe and steady with.

I didn’t know that the path toward one kind of happiness would open the door to another.

Since then, we have worked on many projects together.

And somehow, the two people who once decided they would butt heads too much to work together have found a way of working that feels entirely our own.

I make the decisions.

The design, the strategy, the business, and the hundreds of daily choices that come with every project—he leaves those to me.

He gives me the freedom to lead.

But I also know he is there.

I ask him questions.

I call when I need construction advice. I bring him the problems I can’t quite solve. And if I truly need help, I never have to wonder whether he will show up.

He will.

That kind of support has given me something I didn’t realize I needed: the freedom to become more independent because I no longer feel like I have to do everything alone.

We are a team.

I know he will do whatever he can for us, and he knows I will do the same for him.

What the house gave me

I thought buying that house was the beginning of my real estate story.

And it was.

But it was also the beginning of our story.

That old house needed to be stripped down to its bones before it could become something new.

In a strange way, that was happening in my life too. I was letting go of the idea that every good decision had to make perfect sense from the beginning.

I was learning that intuition doesn’t always arrive without fear.

Sometimes the fear comes along for the ride, and the only thing guiding you is the quiet feeling that something is right for you.

Following that feeling didn’t make the path effortless.

It brought me hard projects, expensive lessons, difficult decisions, and plenty of moments when I questioned myself.

But it also brought me help.

It brought me partnership.

It brought my children the steadiness and love they needed.

And it brought me back to a man I had met years before—at exactly the moment when we were ready to recognize what we could become together.

I used to think that following your happiness meant arriving at a happier destination.

Now I think it’s more interesting than that.

When you move toward what makes you feel alive, you begin meeting the people, opportunities, and versions of yourself that exist along that path.

You may think you’re following a dream toward a house.

And then you realize the house was leading you to an entirely other dream.

—Viktoriya

Subscribe now

Thanks for reading! Walking through the rooms and deciding what should stay and what needed to go. Working with contractors. Comparing bids. Finding the best price for every trade. Choosing finishes and planning the design.

Taking something old and neglected and making it beautiful again.

But it wasn’t only the houses I imagined. It was the life around them.

Slow mornings with coffee while reviewing deals. Working from home, from my backyard, or from a coffee shop. Anywhere I could open my laptop would become my office.

I could see myself doing all of it. And what I remember most is how it made me feel.

None of it existed yet. I had never renovated a house. I didn’t have a property waiting for me or contractors I could call. But imagining that version of my life gave me energy.

It made me happy.

So I cut out the pictures, found the words that felt like her life, and attached them to the board.

Then I Did Something About It

Within days of creating that vision board, I reached out to a mortgage broker to get a better understanding of my options for lending and created an LLC.

It didn’t feel like a carefully calculated decision. It felt more like a nudge—something I needed to follow before I could talk myself out of it.

I didn’t have a property picked out. I didn’t have contractors lined up. I didn’t know how any of it was going to come together. I just wanted to understand what was possible.

We talked about financing and the money I could potentially access. Within a week, I decided to open a HELOC that I could use toward the renovation and use money I already had in savings to purchase the house.

Suddenly, the idea had a financial structure.

I had the money to buy a property. I had access to the money to renovate it.

For the first time, this life I had imagined felt possible.

I still didn’t have a house.

I didn’t have a crew waiting for me or years of construction experience. There was no perfectly mapped-out plan showing me how to get from the woman sitting on her deck to the woman renovating houses.

Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t wait for one.

I used to think confidence came before the decision. That first you made the plan, assembled the right people, learned enough—and then you began.

That isn’t how it happened for me.

I began with one question:

What’s the next thing I can do to make this real?

Was It Manifestation?

I think about that vision board sometimes because so much of what I pictured that afternoon has become incredibly ordinary in my life today.

I walk through old houses and imagine what they could become.

I work with contractors.

I compare bids.

I negotiate prices.

I plan renovations and make design decisions.

I buy properties and add value to them.

Things that once felt exciting enough to cut out of a magazine are now things I do on a random Tuesday. The woman I pictured as my future self is, in so many ways, simply me now.

So was I manifesting it? I believe I was.

But I don’t think the magic was in gluing pictures onto a board and waiting for the universe to deliver a renovated house.

Something more interesting happened. I allowed myself to see the life before I knew how to create it. Seeing it created a feeling. That feeling created movement. And the movement began creating evidence that maybe this wasn’t only something I imagined myself doing someday. For a long time, that felt like enough.

Until I started to realize that while I was grateful for nursing, I wasn’t sure it was something I would be happy doing forever.

I wanted more ownership over my time. I wanted to build wealth that wasn’t dependent on how many hours I worked. And I wanted the freedom to decide what I did with my time.

About three years ago, I got a nudge.

Real estate.

More specifically: buy a house, add value, and rent it.

I didn’t have some elaborate business plan. I just had this idea that wouldn’t leave me alone.

What if I could do this over and over again? What if I could slowly turn real estate into an income stream? And what if, eventually, it could replace nursing and give me the freedom to choose how I spent my time?

That became the plan.

Not to quit my job overnight. Not to take some enormous leap and hope everything worked out. But to build something alongside the career that had supported me for so many years until one day, I didn’t need that career to support me anymore.

I didn’t feel ready

I wish I could tell you I made the transition with complete confidence.

I didn’t.

It was a slow process. I started working less and less at the hospital as I built something outside of it. Eventually, I reached the point where I was ready to take the leap and resign altogether.

There wasn’t one dramatic moment when I suddenly knew I was ready. It happened gradually one decision at a time, until the life I had been building started to feel more real than the one I was afraid to leave behind.

There were properties I questioned buying. Renovation budgets that didn’t stay budgets. Contractors who promised things they didn’t deliver. Timelines that stretched much longer than I expected.

There were plenty of moments when I wondered:

What am I doing?

I’ve made mistakes. I’ve spent more money than I planned. I’ve trusted people I probably shouldn’t have. I’ve worried that a project taking too long meant I was failing.

And I’ve had to make decisions involving tens of thousands of dollars while still wondering whether I was making the right call.

But something else was happening at the same time.

I was learning. I was building equity. I was becoming more comfortable making decisions without needing someone else to tell me they were right.

And maybe most importantly, I was learning to trust myself.

The part nobody really talks about

When people talk about building wealth, they tend to talk about numbers: purchase price, renovation budget, cash flow, equity, interest rates.

Those things matter. I’ll talk about all of them here.

But I’ve realized there’s another side to building wealth that doesn’t fit neatly into a spreadsheet.

It’s what happens internally when you start taking bigger risks. When the numbers aren’t going exactly according to plan. When your logical mind is telling you one thing and something inside you is telling you another.

Real estate has taught me a lot about houses.

It’s taught me even more about myself.

Why I’m writing this

I’m not starting this newsletter because I have everything figured out.

Quite the opposite.

I’m still buying properties. Still renovating. Still making mistakes. Still changing my mind. Still figuring out what freedom actually looks like for me.

But somewhere along the way, I realized this journey hasn’t just been about real estate.

It’s been about learning to trust myself.

I’ve always been drawn to spirituality, astrology, personal growth, and understanding why we are the way we are. As I’ve moved through this transition, I’ve found myself turning to those things not necessarily for answers, but as tools for understanding myself more deeply.

Real estate has become an unexpected classroom for personal growth.

It has shown me where I try to control things. Where fear takes over. Where I second-guess myself. Where I ignore my intuition because logic or someone else’s opinion feels safer.

And I’ve started to realize that building wealth and building a life that feels aligned aren’t really separate things.

At least, they haven’t been for me.

That’s why I think there’s value in sharing this story while it’s happening not five years from now, after all the messy parts have been edited out.

So that’s what Building in Alignment is going to be.

I’ll share the properties, the numbers, the decisions, the mistakes, and the wins.

But I’ll also share what’s happening underneath all of it the fears, the growth, the intuitive nudges, the moments I second-guess myself, and the moments I finally listen.

I’ll talk about building wealth, but also about building a life that actually feels like your own.

Because I’m beginning to believe that freedom isn’t something you suddenly arrive at once you’ve made enough money.

It’s something you start building the moment you trust yourself enough to choose differently.

Three years ago, that started with a nudge.

Today, I’m living the life that nudge was pointing me toward.

I’m still building it.

And if you’re trying to build your own version of freedom too, I hope you’ll build alongside me.

—Viktoriya

Thanks for reading!
