To Send/Not To Send Pitches/Invites/Samples

Gift guide season is upon us and the question comes as to whether or not you should send the pitch or invite? I say go for it!

Do you have a beauty, travel or food client with a new launch, opening or event/activation?

Send the invite. Send the news.

Events are the way to get a writer engaged with the brand and to show that you value their time and attendance. Its relationship building and product knowledge that extends beyond a traditional press release.

And I’m a sucker for a good Christmas/holiday event, just an FYI! I love the holidays, the Rockettes, Rockefeller Center — the whole thing haha

My thought process is better to send and invite then to not! This is especially important for beauty brands for coverage consideration!

As for samples, this is a bit different. I don’t mind a few unsolicited boxes, but I prefer to be in touch if the product is relevant to what I cover. I received a gigantic gaming chair to my apartment the other day from I don’t even know who and it’s been taking up a lot of space so please try to let me know!

Hope you’re well! Not sure if anyone saw my last IG story from yesterday, but I’ve had a handful of publicists not being completely forthcoming lately. I understand, we’re all under a great deal of pressure, however, I’ve been inundated with these behavior from many publicists lately and I wanted to elaborate a bit more.

Now, let me be clear. This is not everyone. There are many publicists who are completely transparent about where their heads are at, client expectations, etc. This goes a long way and makes me excited to work together.

There’s been a few different scenarios where I’ve seen this:

Credentials

Credentials are very important for stories these days. For example, I’m asking for a psychologist, then I’m looking for a Psy D — not an LMFT/LMFT.

Please don’t lie about when a product was launched! I know you want your clients to be considered for opportunities, but I’m looking for October launches (for instance), then the products need to be released between Oct 1 - October 31 (not Sept 30th.)

It might not seem that relevant, but I take great pride in being factual and down to launch dates.

Interviews

Please don’t tell me your client wrote the answers when I saw you in the Google Doc writing them for them from start to finish — this is based on a true story. I will never work with you again if this happens. I take my reporting very seriously and this is an absolute no-no.

Mailers

Part of the job is testing and receiving products. If I ask if there are any samples/mailers available and you tell me there’s not, then I go onto Instagram and see my colleagues and friends post them, then I know you’ve lied. Point blank period.

How am I supposed to consider the products if I haven’t tried them? Take photos? Do the job properly, you know?

Events

I know not everyone can be invited to everything — there’s just not enough space, budget, etc. However, if I’ve inquired about any events or activations going on and you tell me there wasn’t any, and then I receive a press release the next day about “TK launch party” or “TK celebration,” then I know you’ve lied to me.

Just be upfront. We don’t have any space. The guest list is closed. Even we’re not inviting freelancers. Honesty is the best policy.

Overall Thoughts

Let me clarify: This is directed at about 10% of publicists who I’ve connected with over the last three months. It’s a small percentage, but still enough to make me want to give a PSA.

At the end of the day, it’s all about developing a relationship with reporters and not being completely transparent and forthcoming and damage that.

I’m always happy to answer questions and talk more about this and how we can work better together!

Well, to start this newsletter, tomorrow is my birthday! I’m very excited! I’ll be 27 and celebrating with my twin sister — yes, I’m a twin if you didn’t know! She’s pretty cool and has purple hair !

I’ll be heading to Disney World for the weekend to celebrate — yay!

Before I head out for the weekend, I wanted to send out some pointers on how to increase your likelihood of securing coverage and honestly make me get excited to work with you whether for the first time or down the line. Yes, there are agencies and publicists where I smile when I see their name in my inbox because they are so good at their jobs!

Some of these notes come from questions I’ve received recently regarding travel features and best of beauty inclusions and others come from conclusions I’ve drawn over the last few years.

Now, I realize I'm not like most journalists too — I don’t mind getting hundreds of emails — yes, even if they aren’t directly related to what I’m working on. Actually, I prefer to have more news in my inbox at any given time just to peruse during the day to help with idea curation.

Without further ado, here’s some of my pointers. Now, take this with a grain of salt. Every journalist works differently and what I prefer might not be what someone else does.

Please Do Send The Pitch

For starters, please (pretty please if I may), just send the pitch. As long as it covers beauty/fashion, travel, food and health — I want to see it. Don’t worry if it’s not a fit for what I’m working on at the moment. It’s better in my inbox than not.

If I’m the one reaching out to ask about a launch or drop that’s in my wheelhouse, it’s probably a sign that I should have been on the distribution list from the start.

This is especially important for news and product launches. If I find out about news after it has happened, then I likely won’t be able to cover it. The more time that goes by the less newsworthy it becomes. The media cycle is so fast these days it’s crazy!!

I work with so many of you lovely folks on commentary! It’s great and you do an amazing job! That said, if there’s no attribution, then that makes my job harder. Plus, if you want a backlink (in the event I can do that), then it decreases the chances if I don’t have it on standby. I want to make sure everything is credited properly for everyone involved!

Speaking of which, if you’re hosting an event or activation in NYC, please send the invite (and in advance if you can.) There’s nothing worse than scrolling through my feed to see there was an event in my beat for a brand that I was planning on covering and not being invited.

The real kicker to this one is getting a news release about said event asking for coverage. Realistically, why would I cover an event in my beat and location that I wasn’t invited to?

Birthday Month

My birthday is in 17 days! Does anyone have advice they’d give to their younger selves in their 20s?!

All I really want for my birthday this year is new sneakers, a new checked luggage, a hair straightener and tickets to see Olivia Rodrigo and Harry Styles.

What’s more important to me though is really spending time with my twin sister since we share a birthday! The greatest present is being in the presence of those you love!
