unveiling of a system that inverts the entire premise of “investigative” policing. An officer no longer starts with a suspect, a crime, or a plate. He starts with a place, a time window, and a pattern of movement, “vehicles most seen in this neighborhood over 14 days,” “cars that hit three or more retail locations in three days,” “vehicles that visited multiple banks in a week,” or simply vehicles that keep appearing near the same cameras within two-minute windows. The AI returns candidates. Then it stitches those candidates to commercial identity databases, arrest records, 911 logs, and case files until a nameless car becomes a named person with an address, relatives, phone numbers, and a web of “associates.” Fourteen of the preloaded prompts require no plate, no name, and no physical description at all. The machine decides who looks suspicious by how they move through public space.

RELATED: Big Brother is watching our area

This isn’t crime-fighting technology. It’s pre-crime infrastructure dressed in the language of, you guessed it, “public safety.” Flock spent years claiming its cameras “cannot recognize, identify, or track individuals.” That claim is now operationally dead. The system builds dossiers from co-occurrence graphs, how often your car and another car appear at the same poles at roughly the same times. Ordinary life (commuting, shopping, picking up kids, visiting a sick relative) becomes searchable behavioral data. The predicate for scrutiny is no longer probable cause; it’s statistical pattern. Once the pattern flags you, the rest of the apparatus, identity brokers, police records, network analysis, fills in the rest. You become a node.

Every expansion of this architecture will be corrupted, because every expansion of this architecture is corruption of the relationship between citizen and state. The tools will be used exactly as such tools have always been used: against political opponents, ex-partners, journalists, activists, and anyone who becomes inconvenient. Officers have already abused ALPR databases for personal stalking. Now the same networks can generate “associates” lists and movement profiles without even needing a plate as a starting point. Mission creep is not a risk; it is the design. Today the prompts hunt for “witnesses” or “suspicious shopping patterns.” Tomorrow they will hunt for protest attendees, abortion-clinic visitors, gun-show customers, or anyone whose movements fail some new risk score. The data doesn’t forget. The cameras don’t sleep. The commercial databases don’t ask permission.

The surveillance state does not arrive with jackboots and declarations. It arrives with vendor contracts, “public safety” press releases, and AI prompts that turn ordinary travel into evidence of suspicion. Flock’s network already spans tens of thousands of cameras across thousands of communities. OS Investigate simply removes the last remaining friction: the need for a name or a plate before the machine can begin hunting you. Once that friction is gone, the only remaining question is how thoroughly the system will be turned against people who have done nothing except exist in public. History answers that question with grim consistency. Power this granular does not stay limited to “bad guys.” It never has. It never will.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

This entire system, and any other that remotely resembles it, must be destroyed at all cost.

Flock needs to be stopped, right now, dead in its tracks. All of it with no exceptions.

Thanks for reading Lake Minnetonka Odds & Ends! Top races include the governor’s contest (Amy Klobuchar vs. Lisa Demuth) and the open U.S. Senate seat (Peggy Flanagan vs. Michele Tafoya). Candidates made final pushes across the state Monday. The Department of Justice is sending election monitors to Minnesota; state and local officials have added extra oversight.

Rain is expected to fall on Election Day. Research suggests precipitation can slightly suppress turnout, though Minnesota’s high early-voting rates and history of strong midterm participation (including in wet/snowy years) may limit the impact.

I-394 lanes fully reopen. After roughly two years of construction, all general travel lanes on I-394 between Highway 100 (Golden Valley) and downtown Minneapolis are back open. Bring an instrument or just listen; full band setup available. Recurring and popular with locals.

Unmapped Brewing Co. (Minnetonka, Excelsior Blvd): Team Jigsaw Puzzle Contest, 6–9 pm (casual happy-hour puzzling 6–7 pm, contest 7–9 pm). Up to 4-person teams, prizes. Fun, low-pressure social option.

Fall Fashion Sample Sale (Coco + Carmen, Minnetonka Industrial Rd area, afternoon)—apparel/jewelry, not nightlife.

Thursday, Nov 5

318 Cafe (Excelsior): Debbie Anthony (country/singer-songwriter), 8 pm. Ticketed listening-room show; doors/dinner earlier. Solid weekday live music.

Excelsior Brewing Co.: Trivia Night with Trivia Mafia, 6:30–8:30 pm. Recurring, no cover, good energy for teams.

Venue Snapshot (Bars, Breweries, Pubs & Named Spots)

Weekday live music is sparse at most waterfront spots this time of year (many lean weekend-heavy). Here’s the practical picture:

Excelsior Brewing Co. (Excelsior): Best weekday consistency—Open Jam (Wed), Trivia (Thu), plus the one-off Mahjong. Family-friendly taproom, dogs welcome, no cover for most nights.

318 Cafe (Excelsior): The go-to for intentional open mic (Wed) and ticketed singer-songwriter shows (Thu). Intimate, dinner + music format.

Narrows Saloon (Wayzata/Navarre shoreline): No live music listed Mon–Thu this week; next shows start Friday. Solid for casual bar food/drinks any night—classic lake-area pub vibe.

Lord Fletcher’s (Spring Park): No specific live music or events noted for these dates. Reliable for waterfront dinner or a quieter evening.

Carbone’s, Hazelwood, Surfside, Cabana Anna’s, Al and Alma’s, Maynard’s, Buddy Boy Fine Barbeque: Typical weekday dinner/bar service expected; no confirmed live music, open mics, or special events turned up for Nov 2–5. These are solid locals options for a meal + drinks without crowds.

Mound American Legion: No specific events listed for this window (later November has craft shows, etc.). Check for any bingo or casual programming.

CoV / lesser-known pubs / speakeasy-style spots: Nothing specific advertised for these exact dates. Stick to the reliable Excelsior/Wayzata/Navarre cluster for the best odds of low-key live music or conversation.

Farms & Other Daytime/Local Options

Everly Farms (Minnetrista) and Gale Woods Farm (Minnetrista): Fall season is winding down. Weekdays are generally quieter (possible limited u-pick or just walking the grounds if still open); weekend activities (hayrides, music, etc.) are the bigger draw and appear to have wrapped or shifted by early November. No major events listed for Mon–Thu.

No plays, theater (Old Log omitted as requested), art festivals, or larger celebrations appear scheduled for these four days in the listed towns.

Locals-Only Weekday Plan Suggestions

Mon/Tue: Quiet nights—dinner at Lord Fletcher’s, Al and Alma’s, Maynard’s, or Buddy Boy, or a casual pint at Narrows or Excelsior Brewing.

Wed: Best multi-option night. Hit 318 open mic or Excelsior Brewing open jam, or the puzzle contest at Unmapped if you want something different.

Thu: 318 Cafe show (Debbie Anthony) or Excelsior Brewing trivia. Both are low-key and local-friendly.

Overall, the strongest weekday entertainment cluster is downtown Excelsior (318 Cafe + Excelsior Brewing) with easy add-ons in Wayzata/Navarre (Narrows) or Minnetonka (Unmapped). – Halloween for Kids on Saturday, Oct 31 (roughly 11:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.). Trick-or-treating, bouncy house, DJ, kids’ dance, games, prizes, Halloween crafts, and orchard access. Tickets required (season pass holders free with registration). Later that evening: adults-only “The Haunted Table” costume party (7 p.m.–midnight) with food, cocktails, and dancing.

Goldfish Swim School Minnetonka: Free Boo Bash N’ Splash on Friday, Oct 30, 5–7 p.m. Warm pool time with lifeguards, toys, face painting, and Halloween fun for families.

Cabana Anna’s (Spring Park, at The Shoreline): Halloween on Lake Minnetonka all day Saturday, Oct 31. Costumes encouraged for all ages; trick-or-treat, breakfast buffet (8–11 a.m.), lunch, dinner, and bar until 10 p.m. Lakeside vibe.

Gale Woods Farm (Minnetrista): No special events this weekend (Fall Fest was earlier in October). The farm itself is open for self-guided visits/animal viewing in season; next notable program is sheep shearing on Nov 21.

Neighborhood trick-or-treating is the classic option on Saturday night—check local city or neighborhood notices for hours. Nearby free options earlier in the week (e.g., Burwell House Spooktacular in Minnetonka on the 30th) may still have residual activity.

Live Music, Bars, Breweries & Nightlife (Locals Focus)

Strong weekend band schedules at the requested spots and nearby locals’ favorites:

The Narrows Saloon (Wayzata):

Fri Oct 30: Renegade, 8–11:30 p.m.

Sat Oct 31: Shredding Flannel + Halloween Costume Contest Party, 8–11:30 p.m. Classic lakeside bar vibe—walk-in only.

Excelsior Brewing Company:

Fri Oct 30: Rebel Queens (almost-acoustic rock set), ~7:30–10:30 p.m., $5 cover.

Sat Oct 31: Full Halloween party day (11 a.m.–11 p.m.) + Jacuzzi Puma live 8–11 p.m., $5 cover. Family-friendly earlier; costumes encouraged. Open jam Wednesdays are regular but not this weekend.

Cabana Anna’s (Spring Park): As noted above—costume-friendly lakeside Halloween all day Saturday with full food/bar service.

Maynard’s (Excelsior): Reliable lakeside American casual spot with strong patio/views (weather permitting). No specific band listing found for this weekend, but it’s a go-to for dinner, drinks, and the social scene. Open late on weekends.

Other requested spots (Carbones, Surfside, Buddy Boy Fine Barbeque, Al and Alma’s, Hazelwood): No confirmed special Halloween band schedules or events turned up in current listings. These are solid locals’ dinner/bar options for casual nights—check their socials or call for any last-minute music or costume specials. Adults can pivot to the Haunted Table at Everly or the drag brunch earlier.

Sunday: Quiet recovery—brunch somewhere on the lake (Maynard’s, Cabana Anna’s, or similar), a walk/drive around the quieter towns (Orono, Minnetrista, Long Lake, Maple Plain), or just local pubs for a low-key afternoon. to the growth of tourism during the late 1800s. As railroads made the lake more accessible to visitors from Minneapolis and St. Paul, resorts and hotels attracted people seeking recreation and relaxation. Larger steamboats and pleasure boats became increasingly important to the local economy. However, some bays were too shallow for convenient navigation. Dredging provided a solution by deepening channels and creating material that could be used to build up land elsewhere.

One of the best-known examples is Lighthouse Island in St. Louis Bay near Deephaven. In 1880, hotel owner Charles Gibson developed the Hotel St. Louis and sought to improve access for larger boats. Sand and gravel removed from the bay during dredging operations were deposited to form Lighthouse Island. The island subsequently became associated with the Minnetonka Yacht Club, founded in 1882, and developed into an important location for sailing on the lake. Interestingly, despite its name, Lighthouse Island has never had a lighthouse. Its history instead reflects the connection between dredging, resort development, and the rise of recreational boating on Lake Minnetonka.

A second artificial island created through this process was originally called Tattoo Island and is now known as Bug Island. Located southeast of Lighthouse Island, Bug Island was formed using dredged sand and gravel from St. Louis Bay. The two islands demonstrate how a single development project could create new land while improving navigation. Bug Island also became associated with ice boating and sailing activities, reflecting the popularity of water sports during this period.

Other islands on Lake Minnetonka were not entirely artificial but were significantly changed by human activity. Phelps Island, for example, was originally a peninsula connected to the mainland. During the 1880s, channels dredged near Cooks Bay and Spring Park Bay transformed the peninsula into an island. Big Island also experienced changes when a channel was dredged through it around 1900, separating portions of the land. These examples demonstrate that human engineering did more than create new islands; it also altered the boundaries and appearance of existing ones.

The creation and modification of islands had lasting effects on Lake Minnetonka. Dredging improved access for boats, supported resort development, and helped establish the lake as a popular destination for recreation. At the same time, these activities changed the natural shoreline and the relationship between land and water. The islands became part of a landscape shaped by both natural processes and human decisions.

In conclusion, the artificial islands of Lake Minnetonka provide an interesting example of how people have influenced Minnesota’s geography. Lighthouse Island and Bug Island were constructed from material removed from St. Louis Bay, while Phelps Island and Big Island were reshaped by dredging. These changes reflected the growing importance of tourism, navigation, and recreational boating during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Today, the islands remain reminders of an era when economic development and recreation helped transform the lake into the distinctive landscape that residents and visitors know today.

Thanks for reading Lake Minnetonka Odds & Ends! Outdoor/Wharf live music more common Thu–Sun in warmer weather; midweek is solid for dinner/drinks with views. Check for any last-minute Wharf acts.

Maynard’s (Excelsior): Popular waterfront spot; occasional live music (more weekend-oriented in recent listings). Reliable for locals dinners/drinks.

Cabana Anna’s (at The Shoreline Hotel, Spring Park): Lakeside dining/bar. Has hosted open mics and special events (e.g., past witches brunch/paddle). Halloween-focused activity more for Oct 31.

Al & Alma’s (Mound area): Supper club + charter cruises. Quiet midweek dining or private charters; fall foliage cruises have run earlier in the season.

Carbone’s (Mound location at Commerce Blvd): Pizza/pub/bar with local vibe. Karaoke or casual nights possible; Mpls location has more formalized live acts, but the Mound spot is a solid weeknight option.

Buddy Boy Fine Barbeque, Surfside, Hazelwood, CoV: Primarily dining/bar spots—good for casual locals meals without big entertainment schedules publicized for these exact dates.

Mound American Legion: Community hub (bingo, meetings, occasional music/events). No specific public live music or big events flagged for Oct 26–29; past craft shows and reunions have used the space.

Farms & outdoor/community

Gale Woods Farm (Minnetrista): Working farm with trails/grounds open. Tue Oct 27: “A Walk to Remember Companion Animals” (pet memorial walk, ~5:30–7:30 PM, free with registration for group size). Earlier Fall Fest was Oct 3–4.

Everly Farms (Minnetrista): Pet costume contest was Oct 24; bigger Boo Bash/Halloween events on Oct 31. Grounds/orchard for a quiet visit.

Other Area Notes for Mon–Thu

Family/Halloween-adjacent: Lunds & Byerlys Boo Blast / Fall Festival at Minnetonka Ridgedale on Tue Oct 27 (4:30–6:30 PM-ish; costumes, treats—family-focused). Other Boo Blasts nearby on similar days.

Theater/plays/art: Limited local listings in the immediate towns for these exact dates (Chanhassen Dinner Theatres has Annie nearby, but that’s outside the core list). No major festivals. Old Log Theater omitted per request.

Open mic / jazz: Strongest midweek options are Excelsior Brewing’s Open Jam (Wed) and 318 Cafe’s schedule. Broader Twin Cities open mics exist but are outside the core Minnetonka towns. Jazz is more common at Minneapolis clubs.

Speakeasy-style / lesser-known pubs: Narrows Saloon fits a classic local pub feel. Many of the named waterfront spots (Lord Fletcher’s, Maynard’s, Cabana Anna’s, Surfside) lean casual lakeside rather than full speakeasy. Weeknights favor quieter bars over big crowds.

Locals-only weekday plan tip: Stick to Excelsior for the densest options (Brewing open jam/trivia + 318 Cafe music + Maynard’s or downtown spots). Pair with a lakeside dinner at Lord Fletcher’s, Al & Alma’s, or Cabana Anna’s. Check Facebook/Instagram of the venues or Lake Minnetonka Magazine / BaseLocal calendars for last-minute updates, as many smaller acts post short-notice. Weather midweek looks cooler with possible showers early, turning nicer later.

Enjoy the quieter lakeside midweek vibe—perfect for actual locals nights without the weekend rush.

Thanks for reading Lake Minnetonka Odds & Ends!
