Mark Hendry: Forget Celtic's results, it's Callum McGregor's words that should concern fans

CeltsAreHere Extra Time — Sat, 31 Oct 2026 09:00:55 GMT

Callum McGregor did his captain’s duty and fronted up to the media this week.

The Celtic skipper sat in front of the press and answered understandable questions regarding the inconsistent form his side have shown this season. It followed another frustrating evening against Dundee United, during which the Hoops shipped two soft goals in a draw at Parkhead.

Now, McGregor hasn’t been blameless this season - nobody in green and white has - and it’s arguable that the 33-year-old needs a rest from playing almost every minute of every fixture. Unless Celtic have built a strong enough lead to afford substituting their captain, he’s rarely given a moment’s peace.

The Hoops have become over-reliant on their skipper at times, and his own form has inevitably suffered. But he continues to show up and drain his gas tank for the good of the club. You get the feeling he’ll do so forever if given the chance.

So, when McGregor speaks, the players and fans listen. He’s earned their respect, and he appeared to use it very wisely on Thursday afternoon when addressing issues that everyone and their granny can see Celtic are struggling with.

Friday Newsletter: Give our captain some help

Morning. A few thoughts on our captain before the weekend.

Callum McGregor is struggling for form, and he needs help. He also needs to stop being an automatic pick. I can’t shake the feeling he’s become untouchable because he’s the captain and a modern-day legend.

I love Callum. He always fronts up when we lose, and he has been a brilliant Celtic captain …

Lindsell Train, Celtic and the Shares That Could Challenge Desmond

CeltsAreHere Extra Time — Wed, 14 Oct 2026 16:17:54 GMT

When the debate over Celtic’s stewardship and ownership come up, the common question is would Dermot Desmond sell and how could that be facilitated.

However, there are other routes into the club, if you have substantial money to spend.

Son of Celtic reported this week that competing groups were trying to assemble a block bid for Lindsell Train’s shares. It identified no buyers or offer terms, so we’re going to be up front, there is no suggestion from our end that any of this is in play. sonofceltic.com

However, let’s have some fun, and I use the term fun very loosely! Let’s pretend it’s true and look at how such a move could pan out. Settle down, pour yourself a coffee and let’s dig into things!

At a recent share price, Lindsell Train’s last disclosed holding would be worth around £28 million. A buyer prepared to spend that money would acquire millions of votes. But turning it into boardroom change would require the backing of other shareholders.

That includes supporters who bought into Celtic during the Fergus McCann era and have since lost contact with their shares. When those shares go unvoted, shareholders who participate have more weight in the result. A challenger would have to reconnect those owners and persuade them to support change. So…
