Chapter 1 The Beginning

The skies were the clearest Blue. Not a cloud in sight. A slight breeze blows through her long dark Blonde hair, brushing it on her shoulders, along with the thin straps of her Summer dress. As she’s holding it to her face, she notices birds flying up from the other side of the field. She stands up, hearing a voice at the same time.

“Hello??” A holler breaks the air around her.

The voice is definitely a man’s. Non-threathing, maybe lost? She tries to figure out what direction it’s coming from. Looking around questionably.

“Is anybody there?” The voice calls out again but sounds more distant and desperate. Trying to find the source, she bends flowers stepping more into the field to try to get a better view. The field is so dense with tall Sunflowers, deeming the task very difficult.

“Oh, well…” A whisper echos. So she begins to run to try to catch him! Sending flowers flying every which way. As fast as she can, till she reaches the edge of the field but never catching up…..Running out of breath and cramped, she wakes up….

This dream would happen often along with others. Starting around age 7 or 8. At least once a week. It seemed to be around the time when one might start noticing the opposite sex but still too awkward and young to do anything about it…And now that she was older they were happening almost every night!

This particular dream, she never thought was a big deal. Never really gave it much thought to what it could mean, always falling back asleep when it would wake her up too early. But the man in the dream, a total mystery until one day…

Coming from a somewhat rough upbringing. Her Father left when she was young but still sort of stayed in contact. And then there was her Mom with a new Husband, hints why they moved, and the 3 step kids that came with him… She was 18. And over all this bullshit. Knowing her time to be off into the world would be soon, she tried to pretend she was happy for her Mother even though inside she felt like she was dying to find love of her own….

But now, she knows nobody close by and everyone where they used to live is a joke. She knew she didn’t need anyone else, becoming her own best friend. But she just wanted to be WITH someone…the horniest was real!

Unfortunately, that kind of thing does not happen when you are expecting it or even wanting it to. In fact sometimes, you have to just leave it up to fate….

And you know how in dreams time stands still or if you even try to scream, you can’t? That’s how it always feels when they run into each other. Frozen into statues. With nothing but their eyes to study each other’s features.. She tried to remember everything about his appearance. Tall, dark eyes, lightest brown hair with a beanie on, Black zipper up sweatshirt, jeans, and skater sneakers.

He smiles at her. She’s still paralyzed. Every attempt to speak is stuttering. He tries to reach out for her from steps away but then always, out of nowhere, people begin to crowd around not even noticing them. Obstructing his way to her. Her feet are still glued to the floor unable to move. Panic sweeps.

His face pops up over heads in the crowd trying to find her again. She tries to do the same. Pushing people away, trying to scream for help but not even being able to make a noise.

But I DON’T KNOW HIM! She would think to herself. Never seen him before in her life! He seemed familiar at this point but she knew it was only because of how often he had been showing up in her sleep! Who was this man? And why did she now desire so much to find him? There had to be more meaning to it all…

Days go by without any thoughts about the dreams she’s been having. You forget most of them when you wake up anyway. Your mind will never truly let you know what is really going on around you. All you can do is rationally predict or just try to get your future self one step ahead… But God forbid if you rush it, you can push it but all things come better with great patience.

Single for over a year now with nothing better to do but babysit for her Mother. Vanity thought it would be a good idea to get a real job. Just something part time for the Summer. There wasn’t much around so her options were limited. The closest place to her house was probably this Gas Station a view blocks away. So she checked there first.

The Cashier job seemed perfect for a girl her age. She applied and got hired right away. By the second day, she almost started to regret her decision. Bringing tears to her eyes, how could a job make you feel so degraded? Do I even have to describe it? People can be so ignorant! How come Corporate are such Pricks? It was only her SECOND day and already she wanted to blow this place up.

But knowing since she had no car to find anything else worth it, she had to keep trying to make it work. So she held her head high and pushed through the long days. Rocking at the job and trying her best. By the end of the second week, it was not so bad. A part of her even felt numb now. And an even larger part of her itched for a good time. ANY type of RELEASE would do….

It was a typical Friday evening at work. Busy but at least most of the regular assholes had already been in for the day. So ready to get the night over with. Then, at about 20 minutes till the end of her shift, two guys and a girl came in. She felt like she might have seen them before somewhere but was not sure. Maybe at a party?

She rolls her eyes at the guys before walking out of the store. Wanting to play along and completely bored with her life, Vanity replies, “Oh yeah, sure! You’re definitely the funniest ass I’ve met tonight!”

“Hey! That’s not very nice but I’ll take it as a compliment. You’re cool! I like you. Say, would you like to go to a party with us? Tonight, when do you get off?”

She looks at his quiet friend. His hands are in his pockets and he looks so relaxed as his friend beats sweat. A little smile escapes on his face as he tries to hold back a laugh at his friend’s attempt to ask a girl out. He’s so handsome compared to his buddy and way more familiar. There was something about him that she can’t put her finger on.

She was looking at his friend when she replied “Yes” but he was looking in the direction of the girl that was in there. Was she his girlfriend? Vanity hoped not.

“Sweet! Well here is the address and the password is Tacos. I look forward to seeing you hotstuff!”

She makes a disgusted face not feeling amused by his baby names. His friend lets out a little laugh and a bigger smile. She sees him and that’s IT! She immediately recognizes where she has seen him before! He was the splitting image of the man in her dreams! But how could she know for sure?

She didn’t want to get her hopes up but there was a strong gut feeling that this has to be him! Both guys wave Goodbye as they depart from the store. Everything happened so quickly, Vanity could not even think the rest of her shift! All that was on her mind was “is this the man from my dreams?” And a huge part of her was excited to find out.

WOW! Time to clock out already? Thank God! Her mind is still in the clouds as she rushes home to get dolled up super quick. Luckily, the address of the party is only 3 blocks over. Crazy, she just realized she didn’t even ask them their names! Oh well, still excited and even more nervous and anxious all at the same time, she leaves the house and walks there.

Heart pounding in her throat, she gets to the house, a white rancher with a small front porch. There’s a few cars outside but the inside seems quiet. Outside the house it is nice and clean. Hard to believe that there is really a party inside…

She walks up to the door and rings the bell. The short friend answers it with a, “ Heyyyy” he’s all alone and she is slightly confused.

Quickly, she found herself very into the music. The electronica lifted her spirits. He was good! Tony offers his hospitality, “Beer, Wine, Vodka? Your pick!”

“Definely some wine” She answers. He is quick to return with a solo cup full of White Zimmerdale boxed wine, delicious she thought to herself as she took some sips. Everything was groovy. Tony started dancing to try to break the ice. Vanity breaking down and busting some moves too.

But she couldn’t help but stare at his friend though. He had to be most definitely DJing. He looked so heavily concentrated on what he was doing. Body responding to the sounds of the beats dropping. Another minute or two go by. She downs her cup of wine. “Care for some more?” The already obviously tipsy Tony asks. “Sure,” she says as handing him her cup, “I think I’m going to need it.” Her face had flooded with disappointment. Tony noticed but had no idea what for, took her cup and went to fill it up.

Van tried to act casual while waiting for her wine. Standing, chilling, glancing around here and there, trying to at least get an inviting smile from that chick but nothing but rolled eyes and dirty looks… Almost like she is thinking “What the fuck are you doing here?” But Van hasn’t done shit to this girl! Hasn’t even said a word to her. Was it because she thought she was prettier than her? Maybe if she lost the resting bitch-face, she could at least feel welcome.

Tony returns with her drink, “What’s wrong, Barbie Doll?” Vanity’s expression on her face tells all so she knows she can’t lie and say everything is fine. She sighs before asking, “That girl over there, the one with you at the Gas Station, does she always act like such a Bitch?”

“Wow, HAHAHA her?” He shouts and the girl looks over looking even more pissed off then she already was. “Yeah! And I tell her that all the time! But her boyfriend doesn’t see it..” With the sound like a stampede, the girl storms over across the basement to Tony and Vanity.

“What did you say about me Bitch?” The semi ugly, short, dark long hair, almost Jersey girl looking in her cheap knock offs, sneered while pointing her finger in Van’s face.

“Whao Whao Black Stallion!” Tony interferes and steps in between them, “She was saying that she thinks you are pretty and wasn’t sure why you don’t smile or want to talk to her…” He lied but Vanity doesn’t deny, it’s mostly true.

Her eyes roll over Vanity again, with a scowl she says, “Sure…” Arms crossed and ready to fight. At this point, their DJ notices their exchange of words and puts down his headphones and walks over. “What’s going on?” he asks his girlfriend, giving her dirty looks like this is a regular occurrence….

“Oh, this Bitch here is jealous!” The girl started but Vanity was not going to let her put words in her mouth!

“Wait! What? Listen here Bitch,” Van began, “You don’t even know me! Haven’t even introduced yourself! Hi! I’m Vanity! See how easy that is! Was just wondering what your deal was because you’re too pretty to look so pissed all the time! And you’re not coming off as friendly at all.”

A long pause and small smile creeped on the girl’s face, “You know what, you’re right…I respect that. My name is Tonya and this is my boyfriend Victor.” They all shake hands. Van was able to breathe again. It was a relief to know that hadn’t she spoken up, Tonya would have continued to be a drag.

“And I’m so sorry,” Tonya added. “I probably should have introduced myself way sooner. I don’t have many friends, they all did me too much dirty, if you know what I mean? And now all I have is my Victor…” Her Victor? Ew, this could not be true.

“Yeah…” Van says back trying to not think about her reminder that she was his “Lucky” girl. But whatever, who knows how things are behind closed doors. UGH! She didn’t want to think about it.”It’s ok.” She finally adds, trying to seem nice. She knew from sociology that a person with no friends can be easy to befriend but to stay friends was a different story….

So the night went on! Vanity listened to Tonya’s life story with curious intent. She found that they were both similar in a few ways. Same middle class family drama that was not normal if you didn’t go through it yourself, the over abundance of younger siblings, and revolving step parents. You get the giss.

Tonya’s fake personality was apparent to Vanity after just a few minutes. But she went along with it anyway, nodding and agreeing every chance she could without having to say anything back. Tonya was just going on and on. She wasn’t sure if Tonya was just drunk or if she actually trusted her. Van wasn’t sure how to react to this bipolarness, she just continued to shake her head and stare at Victor in the corner of her eye.

“You know what, Girl? You get me!” Says Tonya out of nowhere, Vanity wasn’t even paying attention. “ And I don’t even think I’m too wasted.” Even though she definitely seemed drunk.

“Yeah, same here, “ Van says with a slight buzz now from downing her 2nd cup of wine. “Say, do you like dancing?” Vanity asks Tonya, trying to think of a way to shut her up. She wasn’t sure how much more she could take of this chick’s stories.

“It’s not really my thing.” Tonya responds, shocking Vanity to her core. How do you even have a DJ boyfriend but you don’t dance?? “Damn, that’s a shame,” Van says as standing up, “It’s fun! And easy if you just try.” She demonstrates with a simple twerk.

“Nah, you go ahead. I’m going to the girls room, BRB!” Right on, whatever floats your boat. So Vanity starts dancing again. Trying to catch some kind of attention from the wandering blissful music “God” that she was being blessed with by his “sound”. Every beat she felt in her heart. Even though she knew the music wasn’t just for her. She felt like it was and just danced away like nobody was watching.

Tony notices almost right away and his “groovy” ass keeps trying to grind against her and she wasn’t having it, moving away, and keeping it classy. Victor finishes up his set. Vanity was a little bummed but didn’t display it on her face. Politely, she asks Tony for more wine and sits to wait for him. At the same time, Victor sits too only a seat away from her.

Tony returns with a full cup and then goes to play beer pong with his other guest. Leaving Victor and Vanity in an almost awkward silence. Sipping her wine, Van decides to break the ice, “So have you been DJing for long?” she asks.

“Only for about 3 years.” He replies. His voice was beautiful, comforting even in a weird way.

“You’re really good for just learning. Do you only know CDJs or have you dabbled in Vinyl at all?” Knowing she knew enough to not sound stupid, it was an innocent question in hopes of striking up a conversation.

“Just CDs for now or more less MP3s that I’ve downloaded onto my program. I just like to play around, nothing too serious. I just like to enjoy good music and the easiest way to do that is to mix it myself.” But in reality he was also steaming his sets. Gaining thousands of followers and more interest from music companies everyday.

Yes! Van screams in her head, but instead, tries to sound cool and says, “Me too! I mean, I love music. It has gotten me through a lot of rough times.” Her eyes connect to his, the electric of attraction is jolting.

“Me too!” Victor says back, not able to take his eyes off hers. Finding himself now facing her, infatuated and interested. He continues, “Like, when I even started playing around with music was when…..”

Right as Victor was about to open up to her, Tonya comes half stumbling out of the bathroom down the hallway. She had to have been in there for at least 20 minutes? Doing God knows what. Ew. Tonya must have thrown up because she goes straight for the alcohol and starts chugging beer. Then staggers back to the couch and sits right in between Vanity and Victor, completely ending their conversation.

Why did it seem like he couldn’t talk to her anymore? Quickly, it became very quiet and very awkward. The two couples that were playing Beer Pong were saying their goodbyes to Tony. “Then there were four.” Tony announces to his remaining guests with a full cup of Beer in his hand. It was a little late and even though she didn’t want the night to end, Vanity was also thinking of calling it a night too.

Tonya burped, giggled, then slurred, “Where ya going? The party is just getting started!” Tony gave her a half dirty look then walked up behind his leaving guests to see them out and retrieve more Beer.

“Well, what are you getting into tonight, sweetie pie?” Tonya mumbles snobbly to Van. “Oh well….” Van starts to say before Tonya cuts her off, “ Well! If you are not trying to fuck Tony, I suggest you find your way home.”

“O.K…” Van quickly responds, “ Yup, most definitely calling it a night…” Tonya laughs and grabs Victor’s leg, but he’s staring right at Vanity. Almost like he does not want her to leave. She tries to give him a smile but he can’t smile back even if he wanted to. Thousands, even millions of unspoken words float between them. She knows this wasn’t the end. It couldn’t be.

Vanity politely says Goodbye and rushes up the stairs to catch Tony by the door. As she was headed up the stairs she could hear Tonya and Victor half arguing, “Baby, I want to do it right here.” “Nah, I’m good, not tonight…” “You’re kidding me!?” “No, nah I’m good, you’re drunk!” And a huge smile sweeps across Van’s face.

As she opens the basement door, Tony is right there. “Leaving so soon?” he asks. “Yeah, early start tomorrow.” She makes up quickly to sound mature. “Here, let me walk you to the door.” They take the few steps to the front door together. “Thank you for inviting me. I had a really good time” She tells him genuinely.

“You’re Welcome! Anytime! And Victor seems to like you too.” She smiles huge, not expecting Tony to be talking for his friend…

“Oh yeah? He said that. But what about….”

“Tonya? She’s a Bitch. Ya know when I saw ya while we were sitting in my car at the Gas Station I said aloud, ‘Look at that beautiful girl. I’m going to get her to come over.’ That Bitch rolled her eyes then. She’s jealous of ANY girls whatsoever! A total nutjob! And then when she got out of the car, you know what Victor told me, that he knew you already…that he had seen you in his dreams!”

Vanity’s face turns white. “You’re joking?” is all she could say.

“Nope! After talking to you, we got back in the car, and he said, ‘Yup, that’s her’”

Her heart is skipping beats. The chances! “That’s unbelievable! I’ve had dreams that I’ve seen him in too!” She blurts out, even more sure now that he’s the same man from her dreams.

“Wow! That’s crazy! Oh my God!” Tony gasps. Suddenly, at that same moment, somebody started stomping up the basement stairs. “Ah, got to go, Bye!” Van replies while slipping out the front door. She was not trying to stick around to find out who was coming. Her patience was gone. Peace!

She rushed home still in shock at what Tony told her. Did that really just happen or was it all a dream too? What about Victor’s girlfriend? Why is he even with her? The questions in her mind were neverending.

She arrives at her house. It was about midnight and she was ready to hit the hay but her mind would not stop thinking about how crazy all of this was. It was half driving her mad. While doing her regular night routine, her thoughts could not focus at all. Anticipating the future in her mind but not finding it hard to get comfortable, she drifts off to sleep fast.

The day was maybe ending, but it was just the beginning of the ride in her dreams. Through that night, something changed in her. Not long after, when she is about to finish and get out, the door opens. The curtain was slightly see-through with a retro tacky design on it. All she could see was a male shape. She stayed as quiet as she could but the water was still running so she knew he knew someone was in there.
