Fourteen Golf doesn’t do things the way other golf companies do. Their new Dual Bounce Canyon Sole wedges are an example.

The new Dual Bounce wedges have a unique Canyon Sole designed for golfers who struggle with short approach shots and sand shots.

Sand shots are incredibly easy with he new design. The front of the sole has a low bounce and the back sole has a high bounce. The dual bounce glides smoothly in any kind of sand (or grass).

If you want to build your own (a .355 taper tip shaft is required) the price of the head only is $185 plus about $10 shipping (US). Assembled price with a Project X wedge shaft and a Star grip is $250 plus about $10 shipping. I can build with a with a Nippon NSPRO DS-91w or Nippon NSPRO TS114w for the same $250. I can also build with your choice of wedge shaft (price depends on the shaft you choose).

I finally had a chance to try the Hiskei mini driver on the course last week in our couples scramble league.

I was really surprised by the distance both off the tee and from the fairway.

Off the first tee it was as long as my Titleist driver and much straighter. It’s a different design than most mini drivers. The OEM mini drivers are basically larger volume 3 woods with deep faces.

With the deep face and 10.5 degree loft I was a little worried about playing it off the fairway but I had a decent lie on a long approach and rolled it up to just off the green, with was admittedly a career fairway shot, lol. No problem getting it airborne off the deck.

It’s also available in 9.5 loft for faster swings but 10.5 is a nice combination for off the tee and fairway.

The Hiskei Mini Driver is more like a blend of a large driving iron and a hybrid with higher MOI for control than either a driving iron or hybrid and a LOT more distance.

I set it up next to a Plum Blossom driver for size comparison (the picture at the top of article). The face is about as deep (2.25”) as the driver. Volume is 240cc (vs. 460 for driver). It looks like an oversized driving iron but much deeper from front to back and deeper face depth. It sets up really well with a thick face topline and performs on mishits (most of my shots). It’s very forgiving and has a hot non-conforming face for distance (though it hasn’t been submitted to USGA/R&A). I’m building them to 42.75”-43”, in-between and 3 and 5 wood (like many 4 woods) so it will help a lot with control and give up very little distance loss.

I’m building it with a 69 gram, 3.0 torque shaft made from Toray Japan materials. The head weight is 213 grams.

I can also build it with a lightweight low 50 gram shaft for the same price and recommend the lighter shaft for slower swings.

Price is $225 including a nice head cover plus shipping assembled. For comparison, a Taylor mini is $480, a Krank mini about $375.

New Hiskei Vistar Driver

Hiskei has a great looking new driver for 2026 called the Vistar. It features a high strength, highly elastic 2.4mm face and the company’s proprietary low-CG neck design. The low CG neck design allows weight to be moved lower in the head. It offers a more stable launch angle and works for golfers seeing a higher trajectory. Lofts are 9.5 and 10.5. ZT3 Zero Torque Putter

I finally got to try the Hiskei ZT3 Zero Torque Putter.

I have been playing the original ZT1 design and doing very well with it.

I like the more conventional look of the ZT3. It also has a more solid feel vs. the ZT1.

I really like the looks of the new ZT3 Zero torque putter. Like some of the winged look Zero torques I’ve seen. Set up nice and square (the closed look above is from my camera angle) and feels like it putts itself. The first style I wrote about was the ZT1, more of a LAB putter look, which I’ve been playing and my customers have been raving about. Both are excellent. Price is $99. In 2026, we’ve tested 79 putters total:

ZT1 Zero Torque Putter

I played and practiced with the new Zero Torque putter and have had some time to fiddle with it a bit. I’ve done really well with it while playing with longer/lag putts. I’ve been doing a claw grip and installed a longer Superstroke 2.0 XL Spider grip. It’s 13.75” long. I built my putter to 36.5” (about two inches longer than standard) and the longer grip helped with the claw.

Long lag putts pretty much all coming within gimme range, deadly with shorter putts. I had 4 fairly long one putts of about 10 feet. 4 two putts with the 2nd putt gimmes, and one long operator error 3 putt that I hit about half way to the hole on the first, half way again on the second and then a knee knocker in the cup.

The price is $99 plus shipping, pairing it with a black putter shaft and a nice Winn black and red grip. It’s a great price point (other Zero Torque putters are $450-$500) and nice for those of you curious about zero torque performance without breaking the bank. It’s got a great solid feel/feedback and feels like it swings itself, very neutral back and forth. It has a heavier head weight (mine was 383 grams vs 350 grams for a lot of traditional putters). I like the more traditional feel with no insert/milled face. The alignment aid at the back is great for lining things up and the very high MOI/Zero Torque design resists twisting.

According to the manufacturer, the shaft axis is aligned with the Center of Gravity (CG) to minimize face rotation, helping the club face stay square through the stroke for better start-line control, benefiting golfers with minimal stroke arcs but feeling different from traditional putters. This stability helps golfers start the ball on the intended line more consistently, as the club naturally stays square without needing manual correction; unlike traditional putters that require players to actively fight face rotation.

Fourteen Golf TB-3 Japanese Forged Irons

The newly designed TB-3 Japanese forged irons are out. Fourteen Golf names their irons by playability and the lower the number (3 is the lowest) the easier the irons are to play.

These beautiful Japanese forged irons are much easier to get airborne than their higher number irons and are designed for higher handicap golfers.

They’re available in 5-PW or 5-PW + Gap wedge. They have a strong lofts, so a #7 iron has a loft of 30 degrees which is typical for other brands 6 iron. I’d suggest the 5-PW+Gap combination as you’ll get the equivalent of a typical 4-PW iron set. Send me a note or call if you’d like to discuss this.

New Mini Driver

Here’s a new mini driver that can be used as a main lightweight driver for a slower swing senior or woman golfer that doesn’t like today’s gigantic driver club heads. The high loft at 11.5 or 13.5 is perfect for slow swings to help get the ball airborne. I can also build it as a standard length mini driver with the addition of weights to build it to a standard 43.5-44” mini driver length. It’s a bit different from what’s on the market today. Most mini drivers are weighted similar to a 3 wood (say 215 grams or so) as they’re designed to be built to 43-43.5” or so to help with control (but giving up a bit of distance). This one is weighted like a standard driver at 200 grams so it will play best at a regular driver length (maybe 45.25”-45.5”. Golfers that don’t like today’s gigantic 460cc driver and long for a driver like the old days. This one is 340cc. I like the 11.5 and 13.5 lofts to make things easier to get airborne. I can add these cool round tungsten weights to the sole if you’d prefer a shorter version, I can probably get it to 44” or so. I tested it indoors on my practice putting rug. I love the way it feels and rolls the ball. Can’t wait to try this weekend. Personally, I think it feels better than the ZT1. I really like the looks of the new ZT3 Zero torque putter. Like some of the winged look Zero torques I’ve seen. Set up nice and square (the closed look above is from my camera angle) and feels like it putts itself. MyGolfSpy tested 50,000 putts and it wasn’t even close.

In 2026, we’ve tested 79 putters total:

29 mallets

24 blades

More than 50,000 putts.

- The average zero-torque putter finished with a PuttView handicap of -6.29

- The average mallet finished at -3.99

- The average blade finished at -2.65

(For reference, more negative is better)

Spring is threatening to break throughout the US and most golf courses should be open soon. I played and practiced with the new Zero Torque putter and have had some time to fiddle with it a bit. I’ve done really well with it while playing with longer/lag putts. I’ve been doing a claw grip and installed a longer Superstroke 2.0 XL Spider grip. It’s 13.75” long. I built my putter to 36.5” (about two inches longer than standard) and the longer grip helped with the claw.

Long lag putts pretty much all coming within gimme range, deadly with shorter putts. I had 4 fairly long one putts of about 10 feet. 4 two putts with the 2nd putt gimmes, and one long operator error 3 putt that I hit about half way to the hole on the first, half way again on the second and then a knee knocker in the cup.

The price is $99 plus shipping, pairing it with a black putter shaft and a nice Winn black and red grip. It’s a great price point (other Zero Torque putters are $450-$500) and nice for those of you curious about zero torque performance without breaking the bank. It’s got a great solid feel/feedback and feels like it swings itself, very neutral back and forth. It has a heavier head weight (mine was 383 grams vs 350 grams for a lot of traditional putters). I like the more traditional feel with no insert/milled face. The alignment aid at the back is great for lining things up and the very high MOI/Zero Torque design resists twisting.

According to the manufacturer, the shaft axis is aligned with the Center of Gravity (CG) to minimize face rotation, helping the club face stay square through the stroke for better start-line control, benefiting golfers with minimal stroke arcs but feeling different from traditional putters. This stability helps golfers start the ball on the intended line more consistently, as the club naturally stays square without needing manual correction; unlike traditional putters that require players to actively fight face rotation.

This is how Yamada measured his with either a center shafted putter (like the Zero Torque) or a tradition offset design and I’m following his lead.

To fit for putter length, try this static measurement from SeeMore. You’ll need a tape measure/yardstick and a friend to help measure. Stand straight with your hands hanging from your sides and measure from the ground to the middle of your first/pointer finger knuckle.

I shipped the first batch of the new Hiskei Plum Blossom Mini Driver (shown above right).

I set it up next to a Plum Blossom driver for size comparison. The face is about as deep as the driver. Volume is 240cc (vs. 460 for driver). It looks like an oversized hybrid but much deeper from front to back and deeper face depth. It sets up really well with a thick face topline. It’s very forgiving and has a hot non-conforming face for distance. I’m building them to 43.5”, about the length of most 3 woods so it will help with control and give up very little distance loss.

I’m building it with a 69 gram, 3.0 torque shaft made from Toray Japan materials. The head weight is 213 grams.

Price is $225 including a nice head cover plus shipping assembled. For comparison, a Taylor mini is $480, a Krank mini about $375.

The good folks at Mygolfspy had an interesting article this week on the success top tour players had using 7 & 9 woods vs. hybrids.

MyGolfSpy found:

Twelve of the 38 winning bags included a 7-wood.

Scottie Scheffler, Justin Rose, J.J. Spaun, Wyndham Clark, Chris Gotterup, Michael Brennan and others all won with one. Alex Fitzpatrick carried a 7-wood and a 9-wood.

Only four winning bags had a conventional hybrid.

It might be time to consider swapping out that hard to hit hybrid for a higher launching club.

The B8 Fairway wood is stainless steen and comes in a 21 degree 7 wood and a 24 degree #9 wood. I’m using the same shaft as the mini drivers… a little bit heavier (69g) shaft. Here’s a new mini driver that can be used as a main t driver for a slower swing senior or woman golfer (or any golfer) that doesn’t like today’s gigantic driver club heads. The high loft at 11.5 or 13.5 is perfect for slow swings to help get the ball airborne. Golfers that don’t like today’s gigantic 460cc driver and long for a driver like the old days. The newly designed TB-3 Japanese forged irons are out. Fourteen Golf names their irons by playability and the lower the number (3 is the lowest) the easier the irons are to play.

These beautiful Japanese forged irons are much easier to get airborne than their higher number irons and are designed for higher handicap golfers.

They’re available in 5-PW or 5-PW + Gap wedge. They have a strong lofts, so a #7 iron has a loft of 30 degrees which is typical for other brands 6 iron. I’d suggest the 5-PW+Gap combination as you’ll get the equivalent of a typical 4-PW iron set. Send me a note or call if you’d like to discuss this.

New Mini Driver

Here’s a new mini driver that can be used as a main lightweight driver for a slower swing senior or woman golfer that doesn’t like today’s gigantic driver club heads. I can add these cool round tungsten weights to the sole if you’d prefer a shorter version, I can probably get it to 44” or so. I just received my new ZT3 putter. Thank you. I put a Golf Pride Zero Taper grip on it that I had lying around. I tried it after the grip tape had dried. I tested it indoors on my practice putting rug. I love the way it feels and rolls the ball. Can’t wait to try this weekend. Personally, I think it feels better than the ZT1. Thanks again for a great putter.

I really like the looks of the new ZT3 Zero torque putter. Like some of the winged look Zero torques I’ve seen. Set up nice and square (the closed look above is from my camera angle) and feels like it putts itself. The first style I wrote about was the ZT1, more of a LAB putter look, which I’ve been playing and my customers have been raving about. Both are excellent. Price is $99. There’s a good MyGolfSpy article linked below says “wasn’t even close, Zero Torque on it’s own tier”…

In 2026, we’ve tested 79 putters total:

- The average zero-torque putter finished with a PuttView handicap of -6.29

- The average mallet finished at -3.99

- The average blade finished at -2.65

(For reference, more negative is better)

Spring is threatening to break throughout the US and most golf courses should be open soon. His daughter commandeered it so I have to make him another one, lol.

I think his description “it just flows” is perfect.

I played and practiced with the new Zero Torque putter and have had some time to fiddle with it a bit. I’ve done really well with it while playing with longer/lag putts. I’ve been doing a claw grip and installed a longer Superstroke 2.0 XL Spider grip. It’s 13.75” long. I built my putter to 36.5” (about two inches longer than standard) and the longer grip helped with the claw.

Long lag putts pretty much all coming within gimme range, deadly with shorter putts. I had 4 fairly long one putts of about 10 feet. 4 two putts with the 2nd putt gimmes, and one long operator error 3 putt that I hit about half way to the hole on the first, half way again on the second and then a knee knocker in the cup.

The price is $99 plus shipping, pairing it with a black putter shaft and a nice Winn black and red grip. It’s a great price point (other Zero Torque putters are $450-$500) and nice for those of you curious about zero torque performance without breaking the bank. It’s got a great solid feel/feedback and feels like it swings itself, very neutral back and forth. It has a heavier head weight (mine was 383 grams vs 350 grams for a lot of traditional putters). I like the more traditional feel with no insert/milled face. The alignment aid at the back is great for lining things up and the very high MOI/Zero Torque design resists twisting.

According to the manufacturer, the shaft axis is aligned with the Center of Gravity (CG) to minimize face rotation, helping the club face stay square through the stroke for better start-line control, benefiting golfers with minimal stroke arcs but feeling different from traditional putters. This stability helps golfers start the ball on the intended line more consistently, as the club naturally stays square without needing manual correction; unlike traditional putters that require players to actively fight face rotation.

I shipped the first batch of the new Hiskei Plum Blossom Mini Driver (shown above right).

I set it up next to a Plum Blossom driver for size comparison. The face is about as deep as the driver. Volume is 240cc (vs. 460 for driver). It looks like an oversized hybrid but much deeper from front to back and deeper face depth. It sets up really well with a thick face topline. It’s very forgiving and has a hot non-conforming face for distance. I’m building them to 43.5”, about the length of most 3 woods so it will help with control and give up very little distance loss.

I’m building it with a 69 gram, 3.0 torque shaft made from Toray Japan materials. The head weight is 213 grams.

Price is $225 including a nice head cover plus shipping assembled. For comparison, a Taylor mini is $480, a Krank mini about $375.

Here’s a new mini driver that’s a bit different from what’s on the market today. Most mini drivers are weighted similar to a 3 wood (say 215 grams or so) as they’re designed to be built to 43-43.5” or so to help with control (but giving up a bit of distance). This one is weighted like a standard driver at 200 grams so it will play best at a regular driver length (maybe 45.25”-45.5”. Golfers that don’t like today’s gigantic 460cc driver and long for a driver like the old days. This one is 340cc. I like the 11.5 and 13.5 lofts to make things easier to get airborne. I can add these cool round tungsten weights to the sole if you’d prefer a shorter version, I can probably get it to 44” or so. New Hiskei Vistar Driver

Hiskei has a great looking new driver for 2026 called the Vistar. It features a high strength, highly elastic 2.4mm face and the company’s proprietary low-CG neck design. The low CG neck design allows weight to be moved lover in the for lower center of gravity. It offers a more stable launch angle and works for golfers seeing a higher trajectory. New Chipper

I really have been struggling with my chipping and found this great little chipper to help with the Chipping Yips. It has the loft of many 9 irons and it’s designed to help get the ball up and rolling without worrying about the dreaded chipping yip. I shipped the first batch of the new Hiskei Plum Blossom Mini Driver (shown above right).

I set it up next to a Plum Blossom driver for size comparison. The face is about as deep as the driver. Volume is 240cc (vs. 460 for driver). It looks like an oversized hybrid but much deeper from front to back and deeper face depth. It sets up really well with a thick face topline. It’s very forgiving and has a hot non-conforming face for distance. I’m building them to 43.5”, about the length of most 3 woods so it will help with control and give up very little distance loss.

I’m building it with a 69 gram, 3.0 torque shaft made from Toray Japan materials. The head weight is 213 grams.

Price is $225 including a nice head cover plus shipping assembled. For comparison, a Taylor mini is $480, a Krank mini about $375.

Reshafts

This is a great time of year to look at reshafting your clubs. Maybe your swing has gotten stronger over the course of the summer and you could use something a little stiffer flex. Or you find you’re struggling to get the distance you used to and need something with a little more kick. I like the Hiskei Wave shaft to hotrod your OEM driver and fairway woods. The Wave shaft uses premium materials like the $350+ Japanese shafts but it’s priced at $160. Add $40 for an OEM sleeve/Star grip and all you have to do is screw it into the head and you’re good to go.

Hiski also makes an excellent 45 gram shaft that’s priced at $135 for the shaft only. 45 grams (at 45” vs. 46” for most shafts) and 4.0 torque with Toray Japan materials. Shafts with these specs are typically $400+.

I can also get about any shaft made from Mitsubishi, Fujikura, Aretera, Project X, UST, and Aerotech. These companies all make great iron shafts if you’re looking to reshaft your irons. I just received my new ZT3 putter. Thank you. I put a Golf Pride Zero Taper grip on it that I had lying around. I tried it after the grip tape had dried. I tested it indoors on my practice putting rug. I love the way it feels and rolls the ball. Can’t wait to try this weekend. Personally, I think it feels better than the ZT1. I really like the looks of the new ZT3 Zero torque putter. Like some of the winged look Zero torques I’ve seen. Set up nice and square (the closed look above is from my camera angle) and feels like it putts itself. The first style I wrote about was the ZT1, more of a LAB putter look, which I’ve been playing and my customers have been raving about. Both are excellent. Price is $99. His daughter commandeered it so I have to make him another one, lol.

I think his description “it just flows” is perfect.

I played and practiced with the new Zero Torque putter and have had some time to fiddle with it a bit. I’ve done really well with it while playing with longer/lag putts. I’ve been doing a claw grip and installed a longer Superstroke 2.0 XL Spider grip. It’s 13.75” long. I built my putter to 36.5” (about two inches longer than standard) and the longer grip helped with the claw.

Long lag putts pretty much all coming within gimme range, deadly with shorter putts. I had 4 fairly long one putts of about 10 feet. 4 two putts with the 2nd putt gimmes, and one long operator error 3 putt that I hit about half way to the hole on the first, half way again on the second and then a knee knocker in the cup.

The price is $99 plus shipping, pairing it with a black putter shaft and a nice Winn black and red grip. It’s a great price point (other Zero Torque putters are $450-$500) and nice for those of you curious about zero torque performance without breaking the bank. It’s got a great solid feel/feedback and feels like it swings itself, very neutral back and forth. It has a heavier head weight (mine was 383 grams vs 350 grams for a lot of traditional putters). I like the more traditional feel with no insert/milled face. The alignment aid at the back is great for lining things up and the very high MOI/Zero Torque design resists twisting.

According to the manufacturer, the shaft axis is aligned with the Center of Gravity (CG) to minimize face rotation, helping the club face stay square through the stroke for better start-line control, benefiting golfers with minimal stroke arcs but feeling different from traditional putters. This stability helps golfers start the ball on the intended line more consistently, as the club naturally stays square without needing manual correction; unlike traditional putters that require players to actively fight face rotation.

Hiskei Plum Blossom Ultra Rebound Face With AJ Tech 4060 “Fade to Plum” Super shaft

I have a great driver combination with the AJ Tech 4060 (senior flex) “Fade to Plum” lightweight/low torque shaft and a 10.5 loft Plum Blossom driver. Regular $399, this one only on sale for $375 plus shipping through the end of the month.

The AJ 4060 is comparable to the $350+ Japanese OEM shafts and is my favorite shaft of all time. I play a regular flex in my driver. It’s lightweight at only 47 grams and very low torque at under 3.0, which is unheard of in an ultralight design (most are 5.5 torque and up). Expensive material. It’s a great shaft. The flex is a soft senior flex that plays to a senior flex in the lighter weight Plum Blossom head so it’s really easy to hit. The non-conforming face plus high performance shaft will give you more distance.

The sound is almost same as the KRANK but the distance and ease of connecting the ball are miles apart. !!!

Sure gives me some 10-15 Meters longer than my KRANK XX. (About 10-15 yards)

Unlike the KRANK that took a while to get use to it this driver is an immediate hit. I guess the shape of the driver at address position generates greater confidence. The new KRANK with a smaller head does not quite give the confidence. Plus I suspect the MOI is much higher than KRANK.

Let’s see if some of my super seniors and ladies can get hook on this. For the Ladies higher lofts would be the preference.

Only in 9.5 and 10.5 lofts, a lighter 12 degree head is coming the end of May.

I’ve found some nifty 1/2”X1/2” rubber tungsten weight squares that I can add to the back of the head that blend in nicely and add 2 grams per square. It’s handy when adjusting length and swing weight, I can build a shorter club by adding weight to the head.

The head is non-conforming for spring face like the Krank Fire X driver.

Price is $375 with the Wave shaft plus shipping. In comparison, the new 2026 Taylormade drivers start at $650 (and up with different shaft choices). I played and practiced with the new Zero Torque putter and have had some time to fiddle with it a bit. I’ve done really well with it while playing with longer/lag putts. I’ve been doing a claw grip and installed a longer Superstroke 2.0 XL Spider grip. It’s 13.75” long. I built my putter to 36.5” (about two inches longer than standard) and the longer grip helped with the claw.

Long lag putts pretty much all coming within gimme range, deadly with shorter putts. I had 4 fairly long one putts of about 10 feet. 4 two putts with the 2nd putt gimmes, and one long operator error 3 putt that I hit about half way to the hole on the first, half way again on the second and then a knee knocker in the cup.

The price is $89 plus shipping, pairing it with a black putter shaft and a nice Winn black and red grip. It’s a great price point (other Zero Torque putters are $450-$500) and nice for those of you curious about zero torque performance without breaking the bank. It’s got a great solid feel/feedback and feels like it swings itself, very neutral back and forth. It has a heavier head weight (mine was 383 grams vs 350 grams for a lot of traditional putters). I like the more traditional feel with no insert/milled face. The alignment aid at the back is great for lining things up and the very high MOI/Zero Torque design resists twisting.

According to the manufacturer, the shaft axis is aligned with the Center of Gravity (CG) to minimize face rotation, helping the club face stay square through the stroke for better start-line control, benefiting golfers with minimal stroke arcs but feeling different from traditional putters. This stability helps golfers start the ball on the intended line more consistently, as the club naturally stays square without needing manual correction; unlike traditional putters that require players to actively fight face rotation.

Note: I measure with a tape measure placed on the ground following a line from center of putter face following the shaft straight up through to butt/end of the putter with the putter in playing position. This is how Yamada measured his with either a center shafted putter (like the Zero Torque) or a tradition offset design and I’m following his lead.

To fit for putter length, try this static measurement from SeeMore. You’ll need a tape measure/yardstick and a friend to help measure. Stand straight with your hands hanging from your sides and measure from the ground to the middle of your first/pointer finger knuckle.

Fourteen golf is clearing out some of their older models to make room for their newer made in Japan forged designs.

I built myself a set of the TB-5 irons and hit them for the first time last week and love them. First approach on hole #1 from about 140 yards to about 5 feet (very rare). Second shot on the 2nd hole on the green. The only green I missed in our 9 hole couples league was one of the par 3’s.

The TB5 model is a larger and easier to hit model for mid-higher handicaps. (the lower the model number the more forgiving. It has a “Theater Blade Design which reduces vibration in the hands” (the soft S20C steel helps, too). The sole design helps prevent digging and is very forgiving.

Another thing is the lofts are very strong. They come in sets of 5-PW + AW. Each head is about one club stronger than most clubs. So 5-PW has the loft of a 4-9 and the AW has the loft of many PW.

I’ve found some nifty 1/2”X1/2” rubber tungsten weight squares that I can add to the back of the head that blend in nicely and add 2 grams per square. It’s handy when adjusting length and swing weight, I can build a shorter club by adding weight to the head.

The head is non-conforming for spring face like the Krank Fire X driver.

Hiskei is also coming out with an exciting new club they call the Plum Blossom Utility Driver. It’s going to be available the end of April in different lofts and play to 43” for control on tight fairways. Sort of like a mini driver. It looks low profile enough to be played off the fairway and tee box, looks like a great design. They’re using their beautiful, clean plum blossom graphic (coming in fairway, hybrid, and irons, too). They have 3 new Zero Torque Putter designs coming in a few weeks, also.

I played and practiced with the new Zero Torque putter and have had some time to fiddle with it a bit. I’ve done really well with it while playing with longer/lag putts. I’ve been doing a claw grip and installed a longer Superstroke 2.0 XL Spider grip. It’s 13.75” long. I built my putter to 36.5” (about two inches longer than standard) and the longer grip helped with the claw.

Long lag putts pretty much all coming within gimme range, deadly with shorter putts. I had 4 fairly long one putts of about 10 feet. 4 two putts with the 2nd putt gimmes, and one long operator error 3 putt that I hit about half way to the hole on the first, half way again on the second and then a knee knocker in the cup.

The price is $89 plus shipping, pairing it with a black putter shaft and a nice Winn black and red grip. It’s a great price point (other Zero Torque putters are $450-$500) and nice for those of you curious about zero torque performance without breaking the bank. It’s got a great solid feel/feedback and feels like it swings itself, very neutral back and forth. It has a heavier head weight (mine was 383 grams vs 350 grams for a lot of traditional putters). I like the more traditional feel with no insert/milled face. The alignment aid at the back is great for lining things up and the very high MOI/Zero Torque design resists twisting.

According to the manufacturer, the shaft axis is aligned with the Center of Gravity (CG) to minimize face rotation, helping the club face stay square through the stroke for better start-line control, benefiting golfers with minimal stroke arcs but feeling different from traditional putters. This stability helps golfers start the ball on the intended line more consistently, as the club naturally stays square without needing manual correction; unlike traditional putters that require players to actively fight face rotation.

Here’s a weird Masters story. After his 2016 PGA Championship victory, Jimmy Walker was considered one of the favorites to win the 2017 Masters. I was making custom leather headcovers at the time and I got an email from a guy that was a “friend” of Jimmy Walker and he wanted to get him a jazzy headcover for his Masters bag/driver. I did up a beautiful driver cover and personalized it on the inside of the cover with some sort of corny message cheering him on to victory, with the head cover surely getting credit for his win. . I’m sure I sent it to him for free and waited to see my head cover in his bag the entire weekend. No head cover, no “thanks to John for the beautiful head cover”, lol. I’d been scammed and of course Jimmy was not involved. I did create a voodoo doll in this “friend’s” image dooming him to a lifetime of shanks every time he looked at my stolen head cover.

Last weeks Clubmaker Report on the Masters mentioned $3.00 egg sandwiches, those were the excellent ham and cheese sandwiches, the egg salad and pimento cheese sandwiches were only $1.50!

RBC Heritage

A group of friends and I fired up the campers and headed to Hilton Head to watch the RBC Heritage Tournament. We had 5 tickets and rotated in and out all weekend. We had access to a really nice sponsor tent and watched a lot of it from there. The course is beautiful and a lot different than Augusta National. Many players posted on social that it’s their favorite course. Lots of narrow fairways, twists and turns and pine trees everywhere. The last two holes are on the ocean and it’s amazing watching players battle it out on this course. The environment is totally different vs. the Masters. It’s a much younger crowd with a lot of college age kids enjoying the golf and the party atmosphere, especially in the area surrounding 17 and 18 and also the bars around the famous lighthouse surrounded by gigantic yachts. It’s a fun tournament to see in person and the surrounding area of Hilton Head Island and Blufton, SC across the bridge has a lot of great restaurants, stores, bars, and things to do. Highly recommended. Congrats to Fitzpatrick who hung in there all weekend and finally shut down Scottie with a perfect approach on the playoff hole. Well done.

I live in Aiken, SC about 15 miles from Augusta National. The Azaleas and Dogwoods are in bloom, the weather is perfect, and the shoppers are out of control. Augusta Natl sells $277 per second, $1 million per hour, $10 million per day, and over $70 million of trinkets, shirts, hats, Nomes…you name it and there’s a Masters logo on it. This is just the amount they sold to my wife there on Monday.

We were lucky to get Monday practice round tickets again this year after we were rained out last year. They typically don’t do this for a rain out but the storm hit very early in the morning and there was confusion whether the day was going to be cancelled. We had to leave at 11 am and waited around in the parking lot until they officially sent everyone home at 3pm. They gave us a refund and guaranteed tickets for this years Monday round. A classy move that I’ll never forget.

The course was beautiful, the heavily oversewed (I was told with Ryegrass) fairways are like putting greens at most courses. We had strange weather this spring and the Azaleas bloomed early and are maybe 75% spent and not as brilliant as usual but still beautiful.

The pro at my course was telling a story about Lee Trevino and Augusta National fairways. I had never noticed but they cut the fairways all in one direction from the greens back towards the tee boxes. They used to stripe them with wide stripes, one from tee box towards the green, the other from the green towards the tee box. Trevino figured out that the grass cut towards the green (which makes it lay down a bit) could give an extra 10 yards or so off the tee so he would aim for this area off the tee. When Augusta National caught wind of this they changed to the current all cut from green towards the tee box. Note our Pro Mike D is a talker just like Trevino.

Another bit of lore revolves around the famous Pimento Cheese sandwich (which is only $3!). Some guy from Aiken SC named Nick Rangos did the original Pimento cheese recipe and made it for the tournament for years. The club changed caterers to Augusta based “Wife Saver” restaurant. Owner Ted Godfrey tried to duplicate Nick’s famous recipe and they struggled to get it right. He finally tweaked the recipe and found the key secret ingredient. Wife Savers made the pimento cheese spread for about 10 years.

The club decided that having an outside vendor supplying the famous pimento cheese spread was too risky and they decided to take it in-house. Ted/Wife Savers still had the recipe and when Augusta Natl asked for it he offered the recipe in exchange for a few Masters lifetime badges. The club refused and Ted still has the still secret recipe. Most insist Augusta National never did get the recipe right (more spice, more mayo, different consistency). I never did like it but love the $3 egg salad/white bread or the Ham and Cheese sandwich.

Just a quick Clubmaker Report this week. Only a few weeks until the Masters and the Azaelea’s are already in bloom with the warmer weather. I live about 20 minutes from Augusta National and this time of year is incredibly beautiful.

I’m excited to have Monday practice round tickets. Last year we attended and there was a huge storm and they sent everyone to the parking lot at 11 am. We had a few hours to wander around in the morning before they finally officially closed the course at 3 pm. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that we would get refunds for 2025 and that we were lottery winners for 2026 Monday practice round. Nice job, Augusta National!

Spring is threatening to break throughout the US and most golf courses should be open in a few weeks. I played and practiced with the new Zero Torque putter last week and had some time to fiddle with it a bit. Did really well with it during a round with longer/lag putts. I’ve been doing a claw grip and installed a longer Superstroke 2.0 XL Spider grip. It’s 13.75” long. I built my putter to 36.5” (about two inches longer than standard) and the longer grip helped with the claw. Wandered out to the practice green in-between snowstorms and dropped 7 of 9 from about 6 feet and have been doing really well with it all week at the practice green.

Played last Friday and Sunday and still putting really well with it. Long lag putts pretty much all coming within gimme range, deadly with shorter putts. I had 4 fairly long one putts of about 10 feet. 4 two putts with the 2nd putt gimmes, and one long operator error 3 putt that I hit about half way to the hole on the first, half way again on the second and then a knee knocker in the cup.

The price is $89 plus shipping, pairing it with a black putter shaft and a nice Winn black and red grip. It’s a great price point (other Zero Torque putters are $450-$500) and nice for those of you curious about zero torque performance without breaking the bank. It’s got a great solid feel/feedback and feels like it swings itself, very neutral back and forth. It has a heavier head weight (mine was 383 grams vs 350 grams for a lot of traditional putters). I like the more traditional feel with no insert/milled face. The alignment aid at the back is great for lining things up and the very high MOI/Zero Torque design resists twisting.

According to the manufacturer, the shaft axis is aligned with the Center of Gravity (CG) to minimize face rotation, helping the club face stay square through the stroke for better start-line control, benefiting golfers with minimal stroke arcs but feeling different from traditional putters. This stability helps golfers start the ball on the intended line more consistently, as the club naturally stays square without needing manual correction; unlike traditional putters that require players to actively fight face rotation.

Give it a try. The idea is that you want to hit the ball on the upper part of the face and you’ll get higher launch, less spin, and more distance. MyGolfSpy suggests marking the face with Dr Scholls foot powder then experimenting with tee height until you get the mark in the upper part of the face. They test EVERYTHING and this really works. I had a chance to visit the Golf Hall of Fame at Pinehurst last weekend. It moved from Florida back to Pinehurst, NC. It’s a beautiful area and a worthwhile visit. I think you’ll enjoy the World Golf Hall of Fame and USGA Exhibition. The hall of fame has lockers that are curated by the golfer or families of the golfer that are in the hall. It’s cool to see the clubs, bags, shoes, and other knickknacks from the most famous names in golf. The USGA exhibition has some of the science of golf and special Payne Stewart Exhibit with his unique clothing, clubs, trophies and other memento’s. One poignant display from his family had Payne’s personal items recovered from the crash (see photo below the video). I’ll probably post the rest of the pictures in a separate post.

Aretera Golf

Aretera is my go to premium shaft line. Their shaft designer has designed some of the most popular shafts on Tour for years and is the most creative shaft designer in golf. They’ve introduced two new models, A02 Gray and a A02 Blue for hard swinging golfers.

The new shaft is active in the handle and firm mid to a stiff tip. They have the exact same profile, the only difference is in the tip stiffness. Grey has a 7% stiffer tip vs. the Blue. This really simplifies things and is a great idea to help fit golfers to the perfect shaft. In 45/55/65/75 weights and from 4.9-3.1 torque (torque gets lower lightweight to heavier models). $420 installed on OEM sleeve.

The original EC1 model is excellent for a wide variety of golfers and I like this one in the lighter weights/Blue model for slower swings that need a little help getting the ball airborne. It has a firm handle, softer mid section and a firm tip section. The EC1 Gray is 7% stiffer in the tip for faster tempo golfers. The EC1 is $320 installed on an OEM sleeve.

Hiskei Plum Blossom Update

Hiskei is introducing a Plum Blossom fairway wood, hybrid, irons, and wedges in the same understated and beautiful look as the Plum Blossom driver. They tell me the new clubs will be shipping in about a month, I’ll have more information here when I have pricing.

I’m building the extreme rebound face Plum Blossom driver with the Wave shaft and it’s the perfect combination with this hot new clubhead. in 9.5 and 10.5 lofts.
Price is $375 (the new Taylormade drivers are $650!!).

I’m getting a lot of feedback from my customers comparing their Krank driver and the Plum Blossom driver and all are reporting picking up distance. Here’s one:

Ben Hogan Clubs

Last week I wrote about Scotty Scheffler playing a 7 wood and how it might help your game.

I can buy and build Ben Hogan drivers, fairway woods, irons, hybrids, and wedges again (they stopped offering components for a while during Covid).

They’re beautiful clubs and I really like their latest fairway wood design, the PTX Max. The PTX Max fairway wood line includes a 7 wood with a loft similar to Scheffler’s (the Hogan fairway wood at 21 degrees is a lower lofted 7 wood, more like a strong 5 wood than a typical 23 degree 7 wood). This will give you a bit more distance but still get that nice high launch that a 7 wood provides.

It’s also available in a 15 degree 3 wood, a 18 degree 5 wood, and the mentioned 21 degree 7 wood. Both the 5 wood and 7 wood are slightly stronger lofts than standard and will give a slightly lower trajectory and a bit more distance.

I’m doing a shaft upgrade with the Wave shaft for a limited time at no extra cost to the standard “made for” shaft that’s in the Hogan fairway wood for $219 plus shipping. LA Golf Iron Shafts

After seeing Bryson Dechambeau and other pros playing LA Golf graphite in their irons, I get quick a few messages looking to upgrade the taper tip .355 shafts in their iron set.

The LA Golf L series is for stronger swings, available in S and X flex. Stiff and X flex They’re 120 grams and 1.4 torque (same as steel). The price is $99 and I have them made to order for you, I need to know the irons you’re installing them in (for example 5-PW). Send me a note to discuss/ order.

These would be fantastic upgrades for a better player in the Hogan irons I mentioned above.

LA also makes a really nice .370 parallel tip iron shaft called the A Series. These are made to order by weight 45/55/65/85/105 and by launch high launch/mid spin, mid launch/mid spin, and low launch/low spin. The torque ranges from 5.4 in the lightweight shafts to 2.4 if the heavier shafts.

Parallel tip shafts fit a few OEM iron heads and most component heads. You can also drill out your taper tip iron heads to fit the .370 parallel tip heads, of which you have a much wider selection of shafts.
