Hoxton Holborn

Located in the center of London, this hotel is a home-base for tourists and Londoners alike. No matter if you plan to stay in the neighborhood or reach far-flung corners of the city, the Hoxton Holborn is equally convenient. There is a noticeable energy to the lobby - friends meeting for coffee, well known actors taking breakfast meetings, and writers putting the finishing touches on the next great novel. If you’ve ever stayed at another Hoxton, you’ll know how comfortable the rooms are, but here they feel particularly well appointed. Perfect lighting, soft, crisp linens, and sleek modern style. Oh, and we’ll have much more to say about the restaurant, Rondo, in just a moment…

NowHere Cafe

Tribeca’s it-gallery, NowHere, recently opened up a cafe right inside the gallery at 40 Lispenard Street. Now you can now pair a gallery visit with a Kettl matcha and a tamago sando from Taku Sando or a pastry from Pâtisserie Fouet and coffee from Parlor. Stop by now on Tuesday-Saturdays from 11a-6p to grab your favorites and check out their current exhibition: Terminal by the Japanese art duo exonemo, on view through November 7.

Cafe Gitane LES

Though it may feel like Cafe Gitane, the longstanding French-Moroccan restaurant, just closed its doors, they have officially returned as of last week. This time, instead of the buzzy blocks of Nolita, or the brick-paved streets of Vinegar Hill, they are located in the Lower East Side, directly above the East Broadway F stop. Now owned by the team who runs Jajaja (the tenant formerly in this space), it would appear that much has remained the same of this New York institution…see you there for lunch?

If you’ve been a coolstuff reader for a while now, you know that When Harry Met Sally is our favorite rom-com (the final scene always ends up in our NYE newsletter), which is why we’re super excited to share about this upcoming movie & wine pairing night.

I’ll Have What Cheese Having is “Certified Cheese Professional” Anne-Marie’s way of combining her love of the movie and the perfect pairing of wine & cheese. It’s all happening at the Museum of the Moving Image on November 14th, featuring a screening followed by a wine and cheese reception and holiday marketplace with portraits on medium format film. There are goodie bags, it’s a whole thing. Bring a friend and don’t miss this!

While Vanderbilt Ave is dotted with restaurants, Brownstone Brooklyn has long been in need of a great new Ramen Shop. Enter: SRRP (Slurp, Sip, Repeat). Holiday season is fast approaching, and beloved West Coast toy shop, Merci Milo, has touched down in Park Slope. Calabash

West Village’s newest Afro-Caribbean bakery and brasserie from chef Camari Mick, is now open for bizz! Calabash’s all day cafe menu is serving up daytime fare featuring breads, pastries, brekkie sammies, and brasserie-style dishes like Suya Steak & Maduros and Cornbread Pancakes. For dinner, stop by for a five-course prix fixe on Friday and Saturday nights, with plates like Hoppin’ John Dolma and Crispy Pork Belly. The N/A beverage program focuses on house-fermented mocktails and non-alcoholic wines.

Val’s Red Hook

In a space that’s had a fair bit of turnover the last few years, we’re excited that Val’s Diner & Bar is the next to take over the former home of Fort Defiance and Pitt’s. This casual neighborhood spot is a bit like if a diner and an upscale dive bar had a baby…a place where an over-easy egg is just as at home as a shot of well whiskey. Oh, and if things are a little slammed as Red Hook locals try out the newest spot on Van Brunt, you can always snack on their “Waitlist” special: a tiny martini & a small basket of fries.

REW

While many discussing the current state of shopping in Williamsburg are focused on the Hermes and Chanel of it all, the neighborhood still is a destination for finding independent designers. The newest addition to the area’s landscape is REW, a new multi-brand concept store on Grand Street that brings together a considered selection of high-end brands like Jeanerica, High Sport, and Rùadh. Visit the store Wednesdays–Sundays to get inspired for fall dressing.

Stick around to the end of the newsletter to see our roundup of 17 of the city’s best happy hours! We’ve got a packed list that includes specials from $1 oysters to criminally cheap martinis to free pizza and hot dogs with a drink. Scroll to the bottom of this edition for all of our picks!

Celebrate thirty years of art in Gowanus with their Fall open studios, happening Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6p! This is one of our favorite ways to collect & purchase art directly from makers and meet artists in their spaces. More than 400 artists, businesses, and venues in Gowanus will open their doors, giving the public a rare glimpse inside the former factories, warehouses, and studio buildings of our vibrant neighborhood. It’s all happening at 90+ locations throughout South Brooklyn, so map out your day here!

In serendipitous timing with Gowanus open studios, the neighborhood’s go-to coffee spot, Beanmonger, is celebrating its 4th year on the block with a day of fun. Tomorrow, head over to the cafe for: their limited birthday cake latte, a makers market from 9a-4p, a live jazz performance from 11a-2p &&& more!

As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, the evenings of us New Yorkers are filled less with park picnics and twilight strolls. This isn’t always a bad thing - it means we get to enjoy the many, many, fantastic bars and restaurants that dot every corner of our fair city. In that spirit, we’ve put together a list of our favorite happy hours to help you ease back into an indoor lifestyle without breaking the bank.

The Block

It’s no secret that Gowanus has been changing quite a bit as of late, and the newest addition to the neighborhood is The Block. The cafe has tons of seating and a perfectly strong Devoción coffee. The Block was opened by two civil engineers, originally from Turkey, who discovered the vacant space while working on a nearby project. Stop by, grab a cup, and enjoy it in their peaceful backyard!

Anderson Cafe & Restaurant

A new all-day bistro has made its way to St. Marks and they’re serving up all of our favorite classic dishes. Anderson Cafe & Restaurant is rooted in classic bistro fare, warm hospitality and the spirit of neighborhood dining. Located in the former home of the longstanding Cafe Orlin, Anderson is a quintessential New York bistro with a menu designed for all-day dining, featuring dishes that range from oysters to steak frites, and bistro salads to a house burger, and a cocktail program centered on the classics. Anderson is open now for dinner, with lunch and brunch to debut in the coming weeks!

Smør Carroll Gardens

Danish bakery, Smør, has opened their newest location in Carroll Gardens, right on the corner of Carroll Park. We’re excited to finally have a great spot in south Brooklyn to grab a fresh cardamom bun, or in the afternoon a Danish hot dog. The new location is open daily from 8a-5p!

Mythily

Specializing in new and progressive South Indian dishes, Mythily from Top Chef alum Rasika Venkatesa has made a splash after opening last week in Williamsburg. We’re especially excited for dishes like the vegetarian Kathrikkai Adaippu Curry as well as the Filter Coffee Soft Serve. Snag a reservation here!

Cavalier

Chinatown has a new hotspot! Cavalier is a Mediterranean restaurant that pulls inspiration from co-owner Yasmin Kaytmaz’s Turkish heritage. With her experience running Derby Cup and the River plus chef Mason Lindahl’s stints at Diner and Monkey Bar, this art-filled space on East Broadway is sure to have food that lives up to its looks. Cavalier is open now every day but Sundays and Mondays.

Bar à Part

From the same team that brought Zimmi’s to the West Village comes Bar à Part: their slightly more relaxed sister next door. While details on this bar set to open next Wednesday are skint, one thing we can say for certain is that there will be no reservations which is something of a blessing in a neighborhood where seats for a casual dinner are often booked weeks in advance. See you here this fall…we’ll be the ones sipping a chilled red.

Bar CC

In the pages of this very newsletter we mourned the loss of Mel’s on 10th avenue early last year - it wasn’t easy to find something cool and fun in that corner of the city that wasn’t very upscale or inside Chelsea Market (no offense). The solution to that is Bar CC, a new concept from the same team behind Mel’s and Crane Club. Leaning into Crane Club’s louche, disco aesthetic, Bar CC’s rotating menu will be a tight edit of just six bar snacks all crafted to compliment the robust cocktail and beverage program.

Susu’s

The dream of the 2010s is alive in Brooklyn. After the closure of much-beloved Pencil Factory Bar in Greenpoint, alum from that team have banded back together to open Susu’s. Officially open as of this week, Susu’s is a place for strong cocktails and a great burger. We also have heard a little rumor that chicken nuggets might make an appearance on the menu…in any case you should probably check it out soon at 229 Kent Ave.

Saint-Denis

From the same group behind trendy French-leaning bars Deux Chats and Le Dive comes another hit: Saint Denis. Located on the corner of Houston and LaGuardia Pl, in true Parisian fashion there is an enormous amount of outdoor seating, perfect for people watching before winter arrives. Despite leaning more bistro than wine bar, we need to be honest that fries here are a stiff $12…perhaps for now this is a spot to grab a martini and a little snack rather than a full meal.

From today through November 1st, One Monroe Place, a landmarked Greek-Italianate mansion in Brooklyn Heights, will be transformed by 19 designers including Hallie Goodman, SFW, and Paige Blodgett as the Brooklyn Designer Showhouse. After sitting vacant and neglected, the property has been fully renovated by these designers who have restored warmth and personality in different exhibitions staged across its five floors. Open to the public, grab your tickets to visit ($50) here!

Tonight, the Whitney hosts a unique art conversation specifically tailored for younger adults: Art + You. Happening from 5:30-6:30, join for a conversation about artist Aziz Hazara’s Moon Sightings in the Whitney Biennial. This work uses found materials and images drawn from night vision goggles to explore Afghanistan in the aftermath of war. Art + You is free and open to the public, but register here to make sure you’re on the list! If you can’t make tonight’s talk, there will more conversations like this happening every month from now through January.

Mon Lapin at Leo

Montreal comes to Havemeyer st with the upcoming Mon Lapin pop up at Leo on Sunday! From 11-5 the Quebecois chefs will be celebrating the release of their new cookbook by serving some of our favorite snacks from the cookbook (along with a collab pizza of course), and offering a special selection of wines. Reservations have already been snatched up but the team is leaving tables indoors and out available for walk-ins. Santé!

Tokyo Record Bar honors Thelonious Monk

Happy birthday, Thelonious. From October 8th to 10th, Tokyo Record Bar, in Greenwich Village is celebrating the jazz legend’s 109th birthday with a listening experience curated by his grandchildren. They’ll be serving a seven-course vinyl jukebox omakase with dishes like Monk’s Blues (duck and liver gyoza) and Underground, a riff on Monk’s beloved Entenmann’s banana pound cake. Upstairs, the cocktail bar offers à la carte bites and drinks, with walk-ins welcome. Grab a spot at one of the dinners here.

Good News Club

This Sunday, Farm. One is hosting a seated dinner for anyone who could use a break from the doom scroll (so, everyone). The idea is simple: gather with fellow New Yorkers and swap the stuff worth celebrating, whether that’s the passion project you’re nervous to launch, a sweet moment with a stranger, or a win at work. You’ll leave with new connections, a little community to lean on, and enough good energy to carry you into Monday. Pull up a chair here ($50).

This weekend at Lichen in Ridgewood, Balue Coffee & Tea is hosting a pop allll the way from Stockholm. Tomorrow and Sunday they’ll be serving matcha & coffee in the cozy furniture showroom where you’re sure to find a piece of design that inspires you. Stop by both days from 12-5p.

Meet Julia, an artist turned chef who you might know best as the author of two cookbooks: Arty Parties and Salad for President. Sam’s Restaurant

If you live in or around Carroll Gardens, the talk of the neighborhood has been what’s happening with Sam’s Restaurant. The Italian spot originally opened in 1930, and has recently been taken over by Georgia Fulton, a longtime server at the Long Island Bar who went from Sam’s regular to Sam’s owner. Under the new guard, as little as possible has changed - you can still order baked clams and pizza and red sauce pasta. After 96 years on Court Street, we’re glad to know Sam’s is coming along for another round..

148 Noble Street

Readers may have sensed over time that we absolutely love an unfussy yet upscale take on a European restaurant - the kind of cafe that dots the boulevards of Paris but is hard to find in New York in the same way. 148 Noble Street leans into that narrative offering seasonal dishes and curated wines in an atmosphere that is just at home on its block in Greenpoint as it would be in Copenhagen. Grab a table here before the rest of the city knows about it.

H.Valley

The newest spot in the West Village, H. Valley, is an all-day ode to upstate New York. Opened earlier this week, the menu at this market is shaped by chef Austin Johnson’s fine and casual dining background. Think prepared dishes, locally sourced produce, ready-to-cook proteins plus pastries, coffee, and provisions. We can’t wait to make it a part of our daytime rotation in the village!

The city’s first cacao cafe officially opened this week in Soho! ÓOL is rooted in the drink’s Mesoamerican origins as well as founder Ilana Gutierrez’s upbringing in Mexico City. While chocolate is the reigning flavor here, you can customize your beverages with different drink bases and spice-infused syrups. The coolstuff team’s favorite spot for New Orleans cooking in the city, Strange Delight, is teaming up with Food Bank For New York City, the city’s largest hunger relief organization, for a sammie with a cause. Now through the end of the month, the two are serving up a beloved Louisiana staple: a Fried Green Tomato Po’Boy! The sandwiches feature cornmeal-dredged and fried green tomatoes between house-made milk bread with remoulade, dill pickles, and iceberg lettuce. $5 from each Po’Boy (available at Strange Delight) purchased will benefit the Food Bank For New York City, with each sandwich sold providing up to 15 meals for New Yorkers.

Meet Talia, founder and owner of the Gowanus gluten-free, plant-based, and refined sugar-free bakery: Sixteen Mill. While Sixteen Mill has become known for its plant-based pros, Talia’s approach has always been less about what’s excluded and more about what’s possible. Her technique-led process, from long fermentation and heritage grains to naturally sweet ingredients, has helped shift perceptions around “free-from” baking, bringing in a community far beyond those seeking dietary alternatives.

We caught up with Talia to hear what’s new for Sixteen Mill and more about how she got her start!

Kirbee’s

Over the years there have been peaks and valleys in New York City BBQ joints, from Red Hook to the Upper East Side. We now enter the next phase of a barbecue wave with the arrival of Kirbee’s in Greenpoint. Opened by two Texas pitmasters, Jonny White and Chuck Charnichart at 55 McGuinness, Kirbee’s is already drawing lines down the block for their smoked meats and sides…less than one week after opening. Currently open at 11a on Fridays and Saturdays ‘til 4p or sell out.

Weis Showroom & Coffee

Part coffee shop, part high-end bicycle showroom, the new Weis Mfg Shop in Bushwick is an unbelievably cool new place to grab a cup. The brand makes all of their bikes by hand in Brooklyn, so it’s only fitting that they opened this new space where you can also shop goods, components, and ready made frames. Open from 8a-4p every day but Mondays.

Wu’s Dynasty

For those not following along on the Wu’s drama, chef Derek Wu left Wu’s Wonton King a little while back, and according to some (not us) the quality is…not what it once was. For those who complained, rejoice: Wu’s Dynasty, his new restaurant, opens today in the Upper West Side. The new spot will open for Dim Sum every day at 10a and stay open until 10p when the menu shifts to highlight live seafood dishes and peking duck. Here’s to hoping the inimitable Golden Fried Rice from Wu’s Wonton has a place on the new menu!

In the heart of downtown Manhattan, SoHo and Nolita encapsulate many things. Art, dining, music, and fashion all have a rich web of history interwoven with the neighborhood’s identity, even as it’s evolved from a collection of factories and artist lofts to a luxury shopping mecca. Our guide pulls together our favorite picks that cobble together all the pieces that make this part of the city continually exciting to visit.

Meet Sam, musician and Senior Editor at Pitchfork. If you’ve spent any time reading music criticism over the last decade, you’ve likely encountered the sharp, perceptive writing of Pitchfork Senior Editor, Sam Sodomsky. When Sam isn’t writing about music, he’s making his own under The Bird Calls, crafting clever chamber-folk and soft-rock songs that sit somewhere between David Berman and Bruce Springsteen. A South Slope resident for over ten years, we caught up with Sam to talk about his new record and learn how he got his start in the music industry.

Titán

Earlier this summer, one of our new favorite restaurants opened in Dumbo. Titán, led by Chef Alan Delgado of Los Burritos Juárez and Beverage Director Ivy Mix of Whoopsie Daisy, brings together many of the pieces that make their other respective Brooklyn restaurants a resounding success. Grab your obligatory photo of the bridge, then head to their restaurant (and spacious backyard) for dishes like Chile Colorado served with warm, housemade tortillas, and drinks like the frozen Charmagoy which topped our list of best frozen treats in the city.

Meet Tim, founder & CCO of NYC-based eyewear brand Caddis, , the world’s first brand evangelizing awesome aging. After selling the first company he founded, Swobo, to Santa Cruz Bicycles, Tim worked at the iconic brand Patagonia in Ventura, CA., and later founded the brand strategy company PARR GOLDMAN & BYRNE. After many years of business consultancy, he decided he should tour the Western US with a bluegrass band melting faces. In 2021 he gathered a group of unsuspecting heavyweights to launch the non-profit, Music Farming, and is granting money to music education efforts around the country. We caught up with Tim to hear how he balances it all, and how he combines the world of eyewear and music in his day-to-day life.

Pony’s

Over the last couple months, we’ve been watching patiently as Red Hook’s newest wine bar and cafe, Pony’s, was carefully put together. This weekend, we can all finally partake in a crisp glass of wine, and snack on some of the thoughtful plates coming out of the kitchen. Pony’s opens tomorrow, August 22 at 424 Van Brunt Street. On weekdays they’ll be serving coffee in the morning, and on nights and weekends the wine bar takes center stage.

Third Time’s the Charm

Another new(ish) Red Hook gem that we absolutely have to share is Third Time’s the Charm. From the same folks that brought NYC Bad Cholesterol Pizza, this neighborhood restaurant and bar is exactly where we want to have a chill night in Brooklyn. Grab a few cocktails, order some nuggets, a salad, of course a pizza (or two) with their sauce flight. Oh, and they have a fantastic back yard in addition to their cozy dining room…just thought you needed to know.

20 Blocks Sandwich Shop

This week, a sandwich shop opened in the East Village. 20 Blocks, the new place at 215 E. 4th St is the brainchild of NYC industry veterans (including a former Gem chef) and features regional specials like pretzel salad in addition to a tight edit of sammys. We’re personally most excited to try the Turkey Town - house-roasted turkey and fried green tomatoes on toasted honey whole wheat with cajun mayo and romaine lettuce.

Graciela

This new Argentine Tavern just opened in the West Village and we already know you’ll be seeing a LOT of social content about their New York Strip Milanesa in the coming weeks. With a focus on live fire cooking from chef Pablo Rivero, Graciela stays true to the style of food and preparation Argentina is known for while adding their own, refined flair to each dish. PS don’t skip the papas fritas.

Frenzie

Something we often lament is how “the city that never sleeps” seems to have fewer and fewer late night restaurants these days. That’s why we’re especially excited that Frenzie, has opened in Brooklyn Heights next door to their sister restaurant, Confidant. Open daily and offering late-night service beginning at 10p every night, Frenzie is a pizzeria and wine bar that focuses on NY-style pizzas made on housemade sourdough crust. They also have a standout small plates menu and a seasonal soft serve. When late night hits (Thursdays-Saturdays), you can make your pizza a combo with specials like a Cheese Pie and a pitcher of Narragansett for $40 or a cheese pie and two martinis for $50.

Bernie & Herb’s

Nestled in what was once the VIP room of the Union Square Coffee Shop lies Bernie & Herb’s: the new dive-adjacent bar that is exactly what the neighborhood needed. Here you can take shelter from corporate chains and instead indulge in a $3 hot dog and a cheap beer. Put together by some longtime employees of 169 Bar in the Lower East Side, this new spot does feel a little more upscale than it’s predecessor, but maintains all the charm of a well loved neighborhood watering hole. Open daily from 2p-2a!

Apapacho Comedor

While LA has long held the crown, New York City is definitely having a moment when it comes to Mexican food. The latest opening on the ever-growing list of hotspots is Apapacho Comedor in Park Slope - a new restaurant from the team behind Alma Negra. The new concept on Brooklyn’s 5th ave takes Mexico-city cuisine and turns up the dial on flavor and luxury with housemade tortillas like their duck mole negro.

Ven. Archive

We’ve kept our lips sealed on this neighborhood secret for a little while, but now that it’s public knowledge we’re passing it along to you asap! If you’ve ever wandered into the menswear mecca that is Ven. Space and wished the price tag was just a bit more attainable, then Ven. Archive is for you. The new auxiliary location a few blocks from the original will have a mix of samples, one-offs, and out-of-season pieces at a significant discount. Open Thursdays-Sundays 12-6p at 163 President St in Carroll Gardens.

Savannah is a very special place for team coolstuff, and that’s part of why it has taken us so many years to write a guide to this magical, creative pocket of the South.

Anna grew up right in Savannah, and both she and Garrett attended the Savannah College of Art and Design. The presence of SCAD can be felt all around the city. It’s a huge reason why there is such an artsy feel to downtown Savannah, and many SCAD graduates end up opening small businesses and restaurants in the city that nurtured their creativity.

After a lifetime of spending time in this charming city eating & exploring & spending time on the water and under the ethereal oak trees, we’ve got our picks for the best places to eat, shop, sip, and get inspired.

Meet Trish Wescoat Pound, the New York-based founder and creative director behind the eponymous TWP, a label built on effortless American sportswear. Think heritage workwear meets men’s shirting meets unmistakable New York edge: a sparkly skirt from a night out downtown, a perfectly banded cuff from a day sketching in the studio. Trish is constantly hunting the globe for the best fabrics and makers, but her point of view never leaves the city. These days she designs alongside her daughter Jillian, a stylist, and we caught up with her to hear more about the inspiration behind her increasingly popular line of womenswear.
