At 8:00am central, I zoomed in to Dr. Kara Pernicano’s ENG 101 FN10 class at Queensborough Community College in Bayside, New York. A few weeks earlier, Kara asked me to share my experience of navigating the world as a disabled person with her class. I shared some of my essays with her to consider for student reading. As I prepared the video presentation, I became fully aware of how much I have changed throughout my life. As a part of my spiritual growth, I’ve had to love every version of myself. No version is better or worse, they have all prepared me for this moment, they are all necessary for my growth and they are all enough.

“It won’t go down,” Daddy said standing in the laundry room holding a plunger.

“It won’t go down,” Daddy said standing in the laundry room holding a plunger. He looked worried. It was Sunday. Mama had gone to church. “I guess we’ll have to make it somehow.” Daddy went into the back bathroom.

I stood in the kitchen with my tea cup in hand. The water was already boiling. My dad’s words bounced around in my head as I walked to the front porch with a full cup of hot tea. We’ll have to make it somehow. I sat on the front porch sipping tea and missing lots. My speakers were bumpin’ with 107.5. I thought of how I had reinvented myself in three months. How my daily routine went from sitting in a hot house worried about where my next meal was coming from to leaving the house everyday, going to the gym and building new relationships. I thought of how i was behind on so many of my new tasks. I thought of the recent losses in the ALs community. I thought of my many problems. I can’t solve them all at once, but I am not defeated by them either.

When I returned to the kitchen to brew another cup of tea, daddy was using the plunger on the toilet in the back bathroom. Plumbing was an issue at my house too. Dora and I called a plumber several times and there were times we cleaned the pipe on the roof ourselves. We had a lot of making it “somehow” over the twenty years there.

Quietly, I approached the back bathroom, then asked, ”Do you have some baking soda and vinegar?”

“That won’t work,” he said annoyed with the question.

Later when my mom returned from church, I quietly asked her if she had any baking soda and vinegar.

“Yeah!” She said and instantly poured some into the commode in the front bathroom. It flushed. Meanwhile, dad and I were making it “somehow” with the back toilet.

I spent the day writing and squeezing my knees together. When I finally couldn’t take it any longer, I asked my mom, “May I use the bathroom?”

”What do you have to do?” She asked. “Number one or number two?”

On a recent August afternoon, I sat outside of Sneaky Beans Coffee Shop eating a popsicle.

Just a few weeks earlier I walked away from my house. Just eleven months earlier, I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Just six and a half years earlier, I lost Dora, my partner of twenty three years, to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS). The past ten years have been a journey. On this hot August day, I gave myself permission to breathe, to relax, to exist.

“I would like to buy a popsicle,” I said to the young man behind the counter. He was tall, slim and anxious to take my order.

”What kind would you like?” He asked with a large smile.

”Luv Your Peeps.” The words landed softly and comical in the air between us as the blender churned in the background. I smiled then chuckled at the sound of my own voice. He giggled as he punched the cash register keys.
