I have always called my books a library and my perfumes a collection. My family has collected stamps and coins, and I grew up understanding collections as things to be preserved, examined, arranged, and admired. Books have a different presence in my life. They aren’t waiting for me to complete a set or fill a gap. They are there when I need them, and sometimes when I don’t yet know I need them. I began to wonder whether the way we speak about perfume has quietly shaped the way we experience it. We count bottles, compare wardrobes, celebrate acquisitions, and debate whether someone owns too much. Even our guilt seems to be measured in numbers. How many bottles have I purchased? How many haven’t I worn? How many more could I possibly need?

Human beings have always surrounded themselves with objects that carry meaning beyond their immediate usefulness. A letter kept in a drawer, a piece of jewelry inherited from a grandmother, a photograph that has traveled through several homes. Their value is rarely determined by how often we take them out or look at them. We keep them because they connect us to something we don’t wish to lose. Books have occupied a particularly important place in this tradition, preserving not only the ideas of their authors but also something of the lives of the people who read and keep them. I can look at my own shelves and recognize interests that occupied me years ago, questions I was trying to answer, and people whose writing influenced the way I saw the world.

Thomas Jefferson had one of the most remarkable private libraries in early America. When British troops burned the Capitol in 1814, destroying the congressional library, he offered his own books to replace those that had been lost. Congress purchased 6,487 volumes from him in 1815 for $23,950, a considerable sum that provoked objections from members who questioned the relevance of such an extensive assortment of books to the business of government. Jefferson had collected works on subjects ranging from political philosophy to architecture, agriculture, literature, and science. He argued that there was no subject a member of Congress might not someday need to consult. He had even organized his library according to a system adapted from Francis Bacon, dividing human knowledge into Memory, Reason, and Imagination. I find myself drawn to those categories, perhaps because they describe so much of what makes a personal library meaningful. The things we choose to keep reveal something about the questions we’ve asked and the interests we’ve pursued, even when their purpose isn’t immediately apparent.

Jefferson was concerned with the preservation and accessibility of knowledge, a rather different enterprise from my shelves of perfume. But I recognize something in his refusal to judge the worth of a book solely by its immediate usefulness. I’ve returned to books years after reading them and found answers to questions I didn’t have when I first bought them. I’ve also discovered that the pleasure of reading something familiar can be greater than the excitement of opening something new. The book hasn’t changed, at least not the words printed on its pages. I have. My experiences have altered the way I understand what I’m reading, sometimes so completely that I wonder how I could have missed what now seems obvious.

I’ve experienced something remarkably similar with perfume. For years, Chanel Coromandel was a fragrance I couldn’t quite embrace. I appreciated that it was an accomplished composition, but I had little desire to wear it. Now I love it. There was no grand revelation, no particular afternoon when everything suddenly made sense. My appreciation changed as I continued exploring perfumery and discovering what appealed to me. I returned to something I’d once dismissed and found pleasure where I hadn’t before. I imagine many people have experienced this with music or literature, returning to an artist they couldn’t appreciate when they were younger and discovering that time has somehow made the work accessible to them.

Perfume has an additional complication because the object itself isn’t entirely stable. Fragrance materials can change over time, particularly when exposed to heat, light, or oxygen. A book may survive centuries, but a perfume cannot be expected to remain chemically unchanged forever. Still, the association we form with a fragrance can remain long after the bottle is empty. Smell has a remarkable relationship with autobiographical memory, one that researchers have investigated for decades. In a 2006 study published in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, psychologists Johan Willander and Maria Larsson found that odors were especially likely to evoke memories from early childhood and could produce a powerful sensation of being transported back in time. Marcel Proust gave us perhaps the most famous literary account of this phenomenon through a small cake dipped in tea. The taste and aroma of his madeleine awakened a world of childhood memories that conscious effort had failed to recover.

I think about the perfumes I’ve worn through different periods of my life and how readily a familiar fragrance can bring back feelings I hadn’t thought about in years. Some bottles remind me of who I was when I bought them. Others have become attached to my life through ordinary repetition. Recently, I’ve been enjoying lavender fragrances before bed, drawn to their meditative quality and the pleasure of a familiar evening ritual. They don’t commemorate a particular event, but I suspect that years from now the smell of lavender will remind me of this period of my life. We tend to associate memory with the exceptional moments, the holidays, the weddings, the places we visited once and never saw again. So much of our emotional life, however, is formed in the ordinary hours. A particular smell can become the background to years of living without our noticing it happen.

Perfume is also a creative work, something I think gets lost in conversations dominated by performance, longevity, compliments, and price. Behind a fragrance is a perfumer making decisions about materials, proportions, contrasts, and effects. Some compositions reflect the aesthetics of a particular decade; others were radical departures from what came before. In Versailles, the Osmothèque has been preserving this history since 1990, maintaining an archive of thousands of fragrances, including many that are no longer commercially available. Its work includes safeguarding formulas and reconstructing historic perfumes when the necessary materials can be obtained. It is a reminder that perfumery has a history worthy of preservation, even if most of us encounter that history through bottles purchased for our own enjoyment. My shelves are hardly an institutional archive, but they contain works I admire for reasons that have little to do with whether I feel like wearing them on a particular Tuesday.

There is, however, an uncomfortable possibility in all this. We are very good at giving emotional and intellectual significance to things we want to buy, especially when we’re already inclined to want them. I have written extensively about the fragrance industry’s relentless pursuit of novelty and the increasingly elaborate narratives used to sell products. Another founder’s childhood memory, another supposedly revolutionary ingredient, another limited edition presented as an opportunity that may never come again. The pleasure of discovery can become entangled with the fear of missing out, and the more we buy, the more accustomed we become to the excitement of buying itself. It is possible to appreciate perfumery deeply and still recognize when our enthusiasm is being exploited.

The French philosopher Denis Diderot described a version of this predicament in his essay Regrets on Parting with My Old Dressing Gown, first circulated in 1769, long before fragrance launches arrived accompanied by elaborate campaigns and armies of content creators. He recounted how receiving a beautiful new dressing gown disturbed the harmony of his familiar surroundings. Suddenly his old furnishings seemed unworthy of the garment. He began replacing things, each new acquisition exposing another perceived deficiency, until the satisfaction of owning something finer had given way to expense and regret. The phenomenon later became known as the Diderot effect. Anyone who has bought a new perfume and almost immediately begun searching for the next one may recognize something of themselves in his predicament. I certainly can.

This is where the idea of a perfume library has to withstand some scrutiny. Calling something a library doesn’t automatically make it thoughtful, any more than buying hundreds of books makes someone well-read. I own more than two hundred bottles of perfume, and I recognize the privilege involved in that. Every bottle represents materials, packaging, manufacturing, transportation, and money that could have been spent elsewhere. Some purchases have been more considered than others, and there are fragrances I’ve bought because I was curious, because someone persuaded me, or because I became caught up in the excitement surrounding a release. I don’t regret every imperfect purchase, since discovering what we dislike can be part of developing taste, but I have no intention of presenting indiscriminate consumption as a noble intellectual pursuit simply because I can find a more attractive word for it.

What troubles me is the assumption that the number of things we own tells the whole story. A person with fifteen fragrances may have chosen each with extraordinary care, while someone with two hundred may have spent decades studying perfumery and gradually developing a wardrobe that reflects a lifetime of changing preferences. Equally, someone can own very little and still buy compulsively, always replacing what they have in pursuit of something newer. I’ve come to believe that the more revealing questions concern how we choose, how well we know what we own, and whether the pleasure comes from experiencing the fragrance or simply acquiring it. There are bottles in my wardrobe that I would never purchase again, just as there are books on my shelves that no longer interest me. That doesn’t make the years I spent with them meaningless, nor does it mean they must remain with me forever.

Perhaps this change in perspective will influence the way I buy perfume, too. I still want to discover new perfumers, explore unfamiliar compositions, and occasionally bring something wonderful home. But I can admire a fragrance without needing to own it. Meanwhile, there are bottles on my shelves I haven’t touched in years, and I’m curious about what I’ll think of them now. Some may have lost their appeal, while others might surprise me, as Coromandel did. I rather like the idea of discovering something new among things I’ve owned for years. There is no shortage of perfume being made, and there never will be. I don’t have to keep pace with it.

The next time I find myself wondering whether I own too much perfume, I hope I’ll remember that afternoon among my books. I never asked how many of them I needed to justify keeping. I simply enjoyed knowing they were there, waiting for the day I might want to open them again. I’d like to offer my perfumes the same consideration. A personal library, written in scent.

In nineteenth-century France and Britain, the perfume a woman wore could invite judgments about her respectability. We have abandoned many of those social rules, but our habit of judging people through fragrance is proving harder to shake.

I started researching the perfumes associated with nineteenth-century courtesans expecting to find a wonderfully scandalous piece of fragrance history: famous women, notorious affairs and the scents they wore. Surely, among the countless accounts of their lovers, wardrobes and extravagant lives, someone had recorded their favorite perfumes. Instead, I found remarkably little reliable evidence of what many of these women actually favored, and an extraordinary amount of material devoted to what respectable women should smell like. Society seemed rather more interested in judging women’s fragrance choices than recording them.

The instructions were surprisingly precise. In the 1893 English edition of The Lady’s Dressing Room, French etiquette writer Baronne Staffe advised women to avoid overpowering fragrances in favor of those that were light and delicate. She recommended selecting a single perfume and remaining faithful to it, scenting everything from clothing and stationery to the cushions of one’s carriage. There is something wonderfully contradictory about a woman being encouraged to perfume practically everything she owned while maintaining an appearance of discretion. Apparently, good taste required an entire scented household, provided the fragrance itself behaved appropriately.

In Victorian Britain, certain perfumes acquired reputations that went well beyond their ingredients. Catherine Maxwell’s research into Victorian perfume culture identifies violet as a fragrance associated with refined femininity, while heavier perfumes such as frangipani, opopanax and patchouli could suggest associations with the demi-monde. These were the sorts of fragrances etiquette writers might discourage, yet opopanax remained enormously popular among fashionable consumers. A perfume could apparently be desirable and disreputable at the same time, depending on who was wearing it.

Patchouli offers perhaps the most revealing example of how a fragrance could gain or lose social standing. In the nineteenth century, its scent was associated with expensive Kashmir shawls arriving in Europe from India. Dried patchouli leaves were used to protect the textiles during transport, leaving their distinctive earthy aroma in the fabric. The shawls became coveted luxury objects, and their fragrance acquired some of the same prestige. Master perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena recounts this history in his reflections on patchouli. Yet as the material became more accessible, its social reputation deteriorated. The scent that had once suggested fashionable wealth also acquired associations with sexual impropriety and women outside conventional respectability.

I find that extraordinary. Patchouli had not suddenly become an inferior material. Its earthy, camphoraceous character remained recognizable. What changed was its availability and the people society imagined wearing it. A fragrance could lose its prestige by becoming too popular, something the modern perfume industry might find uncomfortably familiar.

The price of smelling respectable

Spend enough time among perfume enthusiasts and you will hear an astonishing collection of social descriptions masquerading as fragrance criticism. Perfumes smell rich, cheap, vulgar, classy, juvenile, seductive or old-fashioned. We assign fragrances to wealthy divorcees, sophisticated executives, grandmothers and women of supposedly questionable taste. A sweet gourmand becomes childish, a powdery floral becomes an old woman’s perfume, and a powerful white floral is suddenly too provocative for polite company. When did describing a perfume become an exercise in inventing the person who wears it?

There is research behind our tendency to make these associations. In a 2018 study published inAmerican Sociological Review, sociologist Karen A. Cerulo conducted blind smell tests using commercially marketed perfumes. Without access to packaging or advertising, participants were often able to identify the consumers and settings manufacturers intended their fragrances to evoke. Their interpretations also reproduced social distinctions involving class and race. People were drawing on cultural expectations to make surprisingly specific assumptions about the people who might wear a particular scent.

This brings me to one of the most casually repeated expressions in perfumery: “smells expensive.” I used to say it myself, but I have stopped. The more I considered the expression, the less comfortable I became with it. What was I actually recognizing? Exceptional ingredients, skilled composition or simply something that reminded me of a luxury hotel, an elegant boutique or a particular idea of wealth? I have smelled extraordinarily expensive perfumes that were thoroughly ordinary and considerably less expensive fragrances that demonstrated remarkable artistry. Yet we continue to use price as an aesthetic description, even when we know almost nothing about the cost or construction of the formula.

The opposite judgment bothers me even more. When someone describes a perfume as cheap or vulgar, how much of that assessment concerns its composition and how much concerns the people they associate with wearing it? If we can recognize beauty in a perfume without knowing its price, surely we should be able to criticize one without passing judgment on its audience.

Our industry has developed a particularly elaborate version of this thinking around niche perfumery. I regularly encounter the suggestion that people graduate from designer fragrances to niche, as though appreciating an obscure perfume house demonstrates greater sophistication than wearing Gucci, Prada or Armani. I find the premise absurd. Some of the world’s most accomplished perfumers have created fragrances for major designer houses, often working with considerable technical resources. Limited distribution is a commercial characteristic, not a certificate of artistic merit.

I care enormously about craftsmanship, originality and the people responsible for making our perfumes. I want to know who composed a fragrance, which laboratory developed it, how its materials were handled and whether the finished work justifies its ambitions. But knowledge should improve our appreciation of perfumery. It should also give us enough confidence to recognize a beautiful fragrance without first consulting its price, its distribution network or its reputation among collectors.

Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu devoted much of his influential Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste to examining how cultural preferences reflect social position. The ability to recognize, appreciate and discuss certain things can become a marker of education and belonging, while excluding those who lack the same cultural knowledge. Perfume enthusiasts have developed their own version of this system, complete with prestigious houses, approved tastes and an unspoken hierarchy of sophistication. We might like to think of perfume as an intensely personal pleasure, but there is nothing particularly private about the standards by which we judge one another’s choices.

None of this means we cannot dislike a fragrance or question its quality. A perfume can be badly balanced, unimaginative, unpleasant or simply incompatible with our preferences. Excessive application can also be inconsiderate in shared spaces. But criticism takes on a different character when we move from discussing what a perfume smells like to questioning the sophistication of the person who chooses to wear it.

That was ultimately the most interesting discovery in my search for the perfumes of courtesans. I began hoping their fragrances might reveal something intimate about these extraordinary women. Instead, I found a society whose opinions about women’s perfumes revealed a great deal about its anxieties concerning class, sexuality and respectability.

We may find the judgments of nineteenth-century etiquette writers antiquated, even amusing. Yet we remain surprisingly confident in our ability to identify wealth, taste and social standing through scent. We have become more comfortable presenting those assumptions as matters of personal preference, but I wonder how much of the old prejudice survives beneath the language of sophistication.

My frustration is with the industry. I can tell you what I enjoy wearing and what gives me a headache, but I am not a trained perfumer, and I cannot smell a composition and pretend to know every decision that went into making it. What I can examine is the business surrounding the bottle: who owns it, who created it, what we are being told about it and whether those claims deserve our attention.

Often, researching a new brand does very little to relieve my skepticism. I find inherited wealth, useful family connections or someone with the money and access to turn an interest into a luxury business. Sometimes I find an industry veteran who is tired of how the industry operates and has decided to change it by launching a brand that appears to operate much like all the others. Everyone has a vision. Everyone has a story. Remarkably often, the proposed revolution comes in a heavy bottle with a familiar sales pitch.

There are exceptions, of course. I know there are because I have met the founders, interviewed them and bought their perfumes. Houses such as Manos Gerakinis, Gallivant, 4160 Tuesdays, Thomas de Monaco, Spoturno and Les Indémodables have given me plenty of reasons to remain interested. Yet somehow, I had begun treating each new introduction as something its founder would have to defend.

Even the personal stories were starting to irritate me. A grandmother’s perfume. A childhood garden. A breakup. A reconciliation. A transformative journey. Sometimes there was even a promise to improve my self-confidence, now apparently measurable in percentages. I could feel myself becoming impatient before I had finished reading. I wanted to ask why a cherished memory needed to become another fragrance collection, and why I, as a customer, should care.

We already have Chanel, Hermès, Dior. We have the worlds built by Serge Lutens and Frédéric Malle. We have extraordinary perfumes made by people who have spent their lives learning this craft. What, exactly, was another founder proposing to contribute? Sometimes my private question was considerably less polite: what kind of ego makes you think you can do better?

Then Jinni Mitchell, a fine artist from Honolulu and the founder of Sunshine Shaka, wrote to me.

She was responding to one of my posts about perfume creation, and something about her warmth reached me immediately, even through an Instagram conversation. One evening, she told me, she had imagined creating a scent that expressed the islands where she had been raised and that she loved. She had no idea how to make it happen.

A friend introduced her to another woman from the islands who worked as a fragrance executive in New York. That connection led her to perfumer Jean-Claude Delville. According to her account, he needed a little coaxing initially, but once they began working together, the exchange became wholehearted. She sent songs, photographs, poetry and her favorite flowers. They spoke frequently on FaceTime.

Jinni held scent gatherings, carried her favorite versions with her and asked strangers what they thought. Eventually, she told me, there were two compositions she loved, including one that captured exactly what she had wanted from the beginning.

Reading her messages, I recognized the sort of founder’s story I had become so quick to dismiss. Here were the memories, the flowers, the longing to put a place into a bottle. But I was also being given a glimpse of the work: the conversations, the trials, the listening, the effort to communicate something deeply familiar to a person thousands of miles away.

She described walking at night through the garden of the property where she works as a caretaker, speaking aloud to the stars and hoping Jean-Claude would feel what this project meant to her. She thought of SHAKA as the stone in a David-and-Goliath story. When she asked whether his name could appear on her box, she told me he agreed on the condition that it be described as a collaboration between them. She wanted to credit the perfumer. In her telling, he wanted to acknowledge what she had brought to their work together.

Then her samples arrived, carefully filled and tucked into the sweetest little pouch. I noticed the care before I smelled anything, but I still had to smell them. A kind person can make a perfume I do not enjoy. An affecting story cannot make me want to wear something.

I loved them.

The two perfumes are Kaimana and Lei Stand No. 14. Kaimana is the brighter, fresher composition, with sunny citrus and an ocean-breeze character, while Lei Stand No. 14 explores lush, sensual white florals and the warmth of a fading Hawaiian sun. You know my weakness for florals and classic French perfumery, so you can imagine why this collection appealed to me. Both were beautiful to my nose, and I wanted to wear them again.

I sample at least one discovery set a day and rarely buy a bottle, even when I like what I smell. I already own so many perfumes I love. But these were perfumes I wanted to own, and that made my question about whether we needed another one rather difficult to defend. Here I was, making room for hers.

Somewhere along the way, I had begun expecting every new perfume to justify its existence against the finest ever made. Why should she have to improve upon Chanel No. 5? Surely loving her home enough to want to express it, finding a perfumer who understood her and making something beautiful together was a reason to begin. I had become so accustomed to questioning the sales pitch that I was struggling to hear the person.

I remain frustrated with much of this industry, and I will keep writing about it. But I owe the people entering it the curiosity I bring to their perfumes. A crowded market tells me very little about what making a fragrance might mean to someone, or what wearing it might come to mean to me.

Jinni wanted to capture the islands she loved. With Jean-Claude, she made perfumes that reached a woman thousands of miles away who thought she had smelled enough. I would hate to have become so certain of my criticism that I missed the pleasure of being wrong.

That sent me down a rabbit hole. What does haute actually mean in perfume, especially when we still cannot agree on what niche means anymore? As the category gets more crowded, I think niche is beginning to split in two directions. Some brands will chase scale through broader distribution, smaller sizes and greater accessibility. Others will move toward exclusivity, tighter distribution and much higher prices. My question is simple: when the positioning moves up, does the perfume move up with it?

The niche perfume market has a problem: it worked. What began as a relatively small alternative to mainstream fragrance has become a crowded commercial category of its own, with hundreds of brands competing for many of the same consumers, appearing in the same stores and relying on increasingly familiar ideas of rarity, creativity and craftsmanship.

Two Ways Out of a Crowded Market

When competition becomes this dense, businesses look for another lane. Harvard Business School’s work on strategic positioning describes the basic choice clearly: create enough distinctive value to command a premium price, or build an advantage around lower costs and broader competition.

I think niche perfumery is beginning to split along similar lines. One side will pursue scale through wider distribution, smaller bottles, accessible discovery sets and lower entry prices. The other will become more selective, with fewer stockists, more direct selling, tighter control over discounting and significantly higher prices. Both are legitimate business strategies. One depends on selling to more people; the other can succeed with fewer customers spending considerably more.

The New Appeal of “Haute”

This is where Haute Parfumerie becomes interesting. The term is not new, but its current prominence is. The Fragrance Foundation France noted this year that the expression has been appearing with renewed insistence as niche becomes more democratized and its codes more commonplace.

Brands are already making it central to their positioning. ORMAIE calls itself “Haute Parfumerie,” while Atelier Materi uses “Haute Parfumerie Française.” ORMAIE currently sells fragrances from roughly $350 into the $400 range; Atelier Materi describes itself as offering a new form of luxury centered on materials and craftsmanship.

There is nothing wrong with moving upmarket. My problem is much simpler: what changed in the perfume?

Fashion Has a Rulebook

Fashion provides a useful comparison because Haute Couture means something specific. Since 1945, Haute Couture has been a legally controlled designation in France. Houses are approved through an official process, and the designation is tied to practices including atelier work, unique models and made-to-measure production. A fashion company cannot simply raise its prices and decide that it is now Haute Couture.

Haute Parfumerie has no equivalent standard. There is no required formula budget, minimum quality of materials, development period, production ceiling or independent approval process. A perfume house can change its distribution, its pricing and its vocabulary without demonstrating that anything inside the bottle has materially changed.

What “Haute” Could Actually Mean

There are perfumes for which I understand the premium immediately. Danner & Flemming grows its own iris in Bavaria, has the material independently processed and works with independent perfumer Antoine Lie to build the fragrances around it. Production is tied to the harvest rather than an arbitrary “limited edition” number. The first collection exhausted its available iris after roughly 900 bottles. When that material is gone, that version of the perfume is gone.

The story is even more revealing because the founders originally hoped to supply their iris to the larger fragrance industry. The material was interesting, but the quantities were too small to fit easily into a system that depends on reliable supply and commercial scale. That is the kind of rarity I understand paying for. The limitation exists in the perfume itself, not merely in where the bottle is sold.

The Same Industrial System

This is where I get irritated. Much of modern perfumery, from mass market to luxury, runs through the same large fragrance companies. So when a brand moves into “Haute Parfumerie” and the price jumps dramatically, I want more than a new vocabulary. If the perfumer, production system and manufacturing structure are essentially the same, show me what changed inside the bottle.

These companies operate at enormous industrial scale. They can source high quality natural materials and develop proprietary ingredients, but an industrial fragrance system also depends on consistency, repeatability and reliable supply. Truly scarce materials available only in tiny quantities are difficult to build into products intended for ongoing commercial production.

So if a perfume suddenly occupies a more expensive tier, I want to know what justified the move. Was the formula budget increased? Were better grades of materials specified? Was more development time allowed? Did the perfumer receive greater creative freedom? Those are meaningful differences. Limited distribution and a higher price are not.

My objection is not to expensive perfume. It is to sameness at a higher price, supported primarily by a more exclusive marketing position. If niche is dividing into mass and haute, the mass side is fairly clear about what it offers: greater access. The emerging haute side should be equally clear about what the additional money buys inside the bottle.

Otherwise, “Haute Parfumerie” risks following the same path as “niche”: a useful distinction that becomes increasingly difficult to define precisely when the industry discovers how valuable the word can be.

Pierre Dinand: The Artist Who Gave Perfume Its Shape

After years of studying perfumers and compositions, a bottle from Le Galion led me to Pierre Dinand, the designer whose work had quietly been present in my family for decades.

Dinand created some of the most recognizable perfume bottles of the modern era, including Opium, Eau Sauvage, Calandre, Magie Noire, Fendi and many others. My mother owned several of them. I owned several more. I had been looking at his work for most of my life without understanding that one man had designed so many of the bottles I remembered.

This article looks at the artist who gave perfume a physical identity and helped determine how some of the twentieth century’s most important fragrances would be seen, held and remembered.

What Benzoin, Orris and Oakmoss Actually Smell Like

Perfume descriptions constantly refer to materials such as benzoin, labdanum, galbanum, orris and oakmoss, but rarely explain what those words mean to someone who has never smelled the materials on their own.

I wanted to create a practical guide using recognizable perfumes rather than abstract descriptions. Each material is explained through fragrances that allow you to identify its character more easily, from the powdery depth of orris to the damp, green shadow of oakmoss.

It is designed to be useful whether you are new to perfume or simply trying to become more precise about what you smell.

Gap Is Bringing Back Grass, and Suddenly It’s 1994 Again

Gap is relaunching four of its best-known fragrances from the 1990s, including Grass, Dream, So Pink and Om.

I wore Grass when buying perfume at the Gap felt completely normal. Its return immediately brought back a particular version of the 1990s, when fragrance was casual, accessible and often attached to the stores where we bought our clothes.

Why I Would Never Pack 25 Full-Size Perfumes for a Vacation

A recent social media trend involved people packing enormous numbers of full-size perfume bottles for relatively short trips.

I love perfume and own more than 200 bottles, but I still travel with a small, carefully chosen wardrobe. For me, choosing a few fragrances is part of the pleasure. A perfume worn repeatedly on vacation becomes attached to the place, the weather and the people you were with.

This essay is about collecting with intention, traveling without turning your suitcase into a perfume counter, and allowing a fragrance to become part of a memory.

Palissandre d’Or by Aedes de Venustas

I visited Aedes Perfumery in New York last spring and smelled as much as my nose could manage, but Palissandre d’Or was one of the fragrances I missed.

Created by Alberto Morillas, it is a beautifully composed woody perfume built around spices, ambrette, patchouli and several interpretations of wood. It has presence, but everything is so well integrated that it never feels heavy or aggressive.

This is also one of those occasions when a sample did exactly what it was meant to do. I would happily buy a smaller bottle.

I recently watched a younger man on YouTube advise older women to stop spraying perfume on their necks and hands because it supposedly ages the skin.

The claim was irritating, but it also raised a legitimate question. Can perfume contribute to irritation or sun sensitivity, and does that mean it is responsible for visible skin aging?

Seven Master Perfumers Behind the Classics

Perfume history tends to remember the house. We say Chanel created No. 5, Guerlain created Shalimar and Dior created Miss Dior.

The language is convenient, but incomplete.

This article looks at seven perfumers whose work helped shape modern fragrance: Ernest Beaux, Jacques Guerlain, Ernest Daltroff, Jean Carles, Paul Vacher, Edmond Roudnitska and Bernard Chant.

I first discovered Astrophil & Stella through Shanghai 1930 and became curious about the rest of the collection.

The house works with established perfumers, yet finding clear information about the company can be surprisingly difficult. Love Is Lost gave me an opportunity to look more closely at both the fragrance and the brand behind it.

This is an honest review of what worked, what remained unresolved and why a respected perfumer’s name is not always enough to make a perfume convincing.

Promoters sold the California Gold Rush to the world as a romance of individual fortune. However, it quickly devolved into a cold business of access. Before a miner could test the dirt, he required a pan. Before he could stay, he needed basic rations like flour and salt pork. He required transportation, credit, and shelter from the elements. The dream of wealth created a thriving mercantile ecosystem long before the earth yielded real fortune.

Samuel Brannan understood this with a clarity bordering on the obscene. He never dug for gold. Instead, he publicized the discovery. He cornered the regional shovel supply. He then sold them at a premium to men arriving with fever in their eyes. He quickly became one of the territory’s wealthiest men.

Yet, something else happened in the chaos of 1849. A few things actually endured. We still wear Levi’s because heavy denim solved a physical reality of labor. We still use Wells Fargo because an expanding economy required a secure way to move value. The dreamers carried the risk and vanished. Meanwhile, the entities solving a material need became the bedrock of American commerce.

Selling the Shovels

The lesson lacks any romance. The miner assumed the risk, while the merchant sold the conditions of participation. Today, the global fragrance industry mimics that exact nineteenth-century model.

The industry stages the perfume boom as an era of unprecedented artistic abundance. Structurally, however, it remains an access economy. Founders pay handsomely to enter the market. Consumers pay continuously to keep pace with it. The behind-the-scenes cartels controlling the infrastructure hold the most secure capital. These are massive, quiet suppliers like Givaudan and IFF. Or consider industrial plants like L’Oréal’s Gauchy facility. It is currently doubling its capacity to churn out nearly 200 million bottles annually for a dozen designer labels.

These entities are the contemporary shovel sellers. They do not need to own the dream. They simply charge admission to it.

Purchasing the Pedigree

This reality becomes unmistakable during the annual perfume weeks in Paris and Milan. The surface acts as a carefully choreographed luxury spectacle. Sleek exhibition booths and historic launch dinners set the stage. Bottles gleam under theatrical lighting while influencers record their simulated epiphanies. The rooms overflow with individuals performing the future of fragrance. Some may possess genuine vision. Many, however, merely pay for proximity to it. They assume a large enough invoice can purchase legitimacy.

The industry masterfully commodifies that hope. Anyone with sufficient capital can now buy the external architecture of a historic perfume house. For a fixed fee, agencies assemble a turnkey brand. You commission a formula from a master laboratory. You retain a boutique branding agency. You source custom Italian glass and book a prominent European trade fair stand. The entire apparatus appears fully realized with narratives of heritage and emotion. Yet, it has not sold a single bottle or earned an ounce of cultural authority.

The perfume house becomes a purchasable identity. The establishment smiles because the founder serves as a lucrative customer long before the public inhales a single note.

A small fortune changes hands entirely within the trade before a liquid ever touches a consumer’s skin. The market does not nurture houses. It sells the fantasy of becoming one. It provides a heavy bottle to imply luxury. It offers a note pyramid optimized for digital algorithms. A copywriter polishes the emotional biography. The upcoming integration of artificial intelligence will only accelerate this. AI lowers the barrier to entry until the simulated appearance of taste becomes incredibly cheap. This further dilutes the market with polished, empty vessels.

The Empty Vessel

In Turkish, there is a wonderfully precise phrase for this: bokunu çıkarmak. It means taking a good thing and pushing it past its natural limit until the very thing that made it enjoyable disappears. Fragrance discovery became collectible, photogenic, and commercially powerful. Then the industry did what industries often do: it kept pushing until the pleasure started to disappear.

The result is a market where mediocrity easily hides inside abundance. A perfume can arrive in exquisite French glass with a reassuringly heavy cap. It carries a steep niche price tag and features a respected perfumer’s name. Yet, on the skin, it still feels entirely hollow and familiar. Creators engineer this liquid exclusively for the moment of initial impact. They design it to photograph beautifully for a social media grid. By dinner time, it becomes entirely forgettable.

The ultimate casualty of this hyper-production is the consumer. The market hands her thousands of new iterations a year alongside an exhausting new assignment. The industry brands this as “consumer education,” but it acts closer to unpaid labor. To navigate the modern counter, a buyer must become a supply-chain amateur, a marketing linguist, and a cynic. She must discern whether a steep price reflects rare raw materials or simply the amortized cost of an expensive launch party. She must decode terms like niche, extrait, clean, and heritage. Marketing executives systematically hollow out these words through endless repetition. Choice without clarity offers no empowerment. It merely forces the customer to absorb the market’s overproduction.

What Survives… The Fever

So, when the fever breaks, what will actually endure?

The corporate machinery will survive, of course. The industrial suppliers and mega-conglomerates will continue to own the shelf space and supply chains. They laugh all the way to the bank because they never bet on a single dream.

But among the brands themselves, the survivors will ignore atmosphere and founder mythology. The perfume projects will evaporate the moment the venture capital dries up or the socialite gets bored. The true houses will endure because they offer something akin to Levi’s denim. They offer a material truth. They command repeat purchases because their formulas possess actual physical structure. These scents wear beautifully for hours after the top notes vanish. They provide transparency in production rather than romantic fables. Their pricing withstands actual scrutiny.

Until then, the perfume gold rush continues turning aspiration into invoices. The instinct to seek beauty, memory, and sensuality inside a glass bottle remains correct. The insult lies in asking customers to pay true luxury prices for ordinary juice wrapped in an extraordinary illusion. The fragrance industry clearly understands the mathematics of the fever. It remains to be seen how long the customer will content herself with buying the shovels.

One of them, inevitably, sprays too much; it is the law of the pack. Another giggles at a bottle of Jean Paul Gaultier shaped like a gilded, muscular torso. A third has already developed fierce, uncompromising opinions regarding “projection,” an entirely charming display of sophistication until you look closer and realize he is fifteen, and his voice has only recently settled. They are loud, unserious, wildly thrilled with themselves, and, in the larger catalog of adolescent male behavior currently available to us in America, almost touchingly benign.

The reaction to these kids getting into fragrance has been pretty hostile. In actual stores, I’ve seen sales assistants stare these boys down with the kind of cold suspicion usually reserved for shoplifters or middle-school field trips. Online, the backlash is even worse. People complain that teenage guys are taking over department store counters and ruining the ‘art of perfumery’ with internet slang. They get bent out of shape when kids look for ‘beast mode’ performance or use cringe phrases, acting as if a few teenage boys are single-handedly destroying society.

I dislike the vocabulary too, but let us not pretend the youth invented it. Adult creators, including prominent digital influencers who dominate the online beauty space, have been employing this identical, vulgar lexicon for a decade to sell juice to precisely this impressionable demographic. The boys did not pollute a pure art form. They merely inherited a marketing machine, monetized it, and, in certain terrifying instances, became better at it than the adults who now complain about them. Hypocrisy, like Sauvage, carries far.

The numbers suggest this is no passing whim near the Chanel shelf. Data from Piper Sandler’s “Taking Stock With Teens” reports indicates that fragrance has skyrocketed as the fastest-growing beauty category among teenagers, up twenty-five percent year over year, with overall usage among Gen Z hovering near eighty-three percent. The beauty conglomerates are fully aware of what the cultural commentators prefer to ignore: young men have become serious consumers of scent.

Honestly, the panic over this is completely misplaced. A teenage guy trying to smell good isn’t a threat to society. Sure, he might be vain, and he definitely needs a stern reminder that spraying five pumps of Versace Eros in public is basically an act of chemical warfare, but teenagers have never exactly been known for their sense of moderation.

Instead of rolling our eyes at these boys crowded around a cologne bottle, we should actually be encouraged. They’re figuring out how they want to present themselves to the world and learning that taking care of your appearance matters. Sure, they’re doing it clumsily right now, but everyone starts out by overdoing it and copying others before they finally develop their own style.

Honestly, losing our minds over cologne feels ridiculous when you look at what young guys are actually dealing with right now. The latest CDC numbers are brutal: nearly half of high schoolers say they feel constantly sad, and so many guys are just completely withdrawing and isolating in their bedrooms. We have much bigger things to worry about.

Against that dark reality, a boy standing under the fluorescent lights of a shopping mall, holding a strip of paper and earnestly asking his friend whether lavender makes a scent feel “barbershop” or “old-man,” seems less like a nuisance and more like a small, stubborn sign of life. He is outside. He is with his peers. He is engaged in something sensory, social, and human.

Look, by all means, teach your kids manners. Demand basic respect in public spaces, and expect people of all ages to be mindful of those around them. But stop treating these teenage boys like they’re destroying society just because their taste is loud and they haven’t figured out subtlety yet. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Perfume does not belong to middle-aged women, or young men, or luxury shoppers, or the critics who mistake access for ownership. It belongs to whoever is moved enough to smell, wonder, and return to the counter. If a twelve-year-old can be pulled toward this world through a ridiculous bottle and a silly internet phrase, I would rather meet him there than sneer him away. Curiosity is a fragile thing in young men, especially once adults decide it looks annoying.

The same shift is now appearing in perfume. Younger consumers are becoming curious about the fragrances that once shaped the rooms their parents moved through. The appeal is not nostalgia in the traditional sense, because most of them did not live through that world. It has more to do with specificity. Older objects often arrive with a built-in point of view, and perfume may be the most intimate version of that return because scent does not remain visual. It lives on skin, hair, fabric, and memory.

Many classic fragrances from the 80s and 90s had unmistakable signatures. Angel was impossible to miss. CK One announced a new kind of casual cool. Eternity had a polished floral clarity that was different from the clean brightness of Pleasures. Poison carried drama. Obsession carried heat. Cristalle was green, sharp, and composed. Beautiful smelled incredibly floral. Poison carried drama. Obsession carried heat. Dune had that dry, strange elegance. Giorgio Beverly Hills was pure projection and blonde glamour. Opium brought spice, lacquer, and danger.

These perfumes were built with definition. A floral had shape. A green fragrance had bite. A clean scent still had structure. Even the lighter fragrances of the 90s felt noticable on skin.

This does not make every vintage perfume superior. Some formulas have changed, some smell dated, and some are more powerful in memory than they are in current production. But many still possess what newer launches often struggle to create: recognition. In a market crowded with constant releases, flankers, limited editions, and algorithm-ready perfume language, that recognition feels increasingly valuable. Younger consumers may be discovering these fragrances for the first time, but older consumers are also returning to them for a different reason. After years of saturation, many of us miss the period when fewer perfumes had to do more, when a fragrance could define a person, a counter, a season, or an entire room.

People remember them because they attached themselves to real life: offices, clubs, department stores, first jobs, nights out, mothers getting ready, bathrooms full of hairspray, and women with unmistakable personal style.

I love seeing younger people become curious about analogue objects and older references, though I could happily leave the smoking revival behind. What interests me is the larger pull toward things that feel tactile, specific, and lived-in. Perfume belongs inside that shift.

A fragrance with a clear point of view, real presentation, and a memorable signature suddenly feels modern again.

This week at Elevated Classics kept circling around one question: what does perfume reveal when we stop treating it as just a beautiful object?

I spent most of the week with Danner & Flemming, a young perfume house built around something increasingly rare in modern perfumery: their own raw material, their own field, their own processing, and a serious collaboration with perfumer Antoine Lie.

It is easy to call something niche now. It is harder to build the entire story from soil, patience, chemistry, farming, and years of work before the perfume even reaches the bottle.

But this week also moved into darker and stranger territory: vague perfume language, Serge Lutens recommendations, Nida by Gallivant, warm florals, perfumes that make women stop me in real life, and a much larger conversation about Caron, luxury inheritance, and the Epstein connection behind one of French perfumery’s most historic houses.

Danner & Flemming: The Art of Authentic Niche Perfume Creation

This was the main story of the week, and honestly, one of the clearest examples of why I keep talking about transparency, craftsmanship, and vertical integration in perfumery.

Danner & Flemming began with a field in Bavaria and years of work with iris, one of the most demanding materials in perfume. Iris is not a quick material. It asks for time, farming, drying, processing, patience, and money before it becomes the soft, powdery, rooty, elegant material perfume lovers recognize as orris.

What makes this house interesting is that the perfume does not begin with a marketing concept. It begins with cultivation. With a crop. With a material that had to be understood before it could be translated into fragrance.

Their perfumes, created with Antoine Lie, show what happens when niche is not just an aesthetic. It becomes a structure. A way of working. A commitment to material, place, and authorship.

Exclusive Interview: Danner & Flemming

The companion interview goes deeper into the story behind the brand: the Bavarian iris field, the scientific background, the agricultural reality, and the decision to become a perfume house rather than simply selling raw material into the industry.

This is the part of perfume I wish more people could see. Before the bottle, before the press release, before anyone starts saying “powdery,” “elegant,” or “timeless,” there is a long material chain.

Someone has to grow the plant. Someone has to process it. Someone has to decide whether quality is worth the years it takes.

New Perfume Releases I’m Watching

I also updated the new perfume releases page this week, which has become one of my favorite ongoing projects because it gives me a place to track what actually feels worth smelling.

There are always more launches. That is not the problem. The problem is finding the ones with a reason to exist.

This week, the releases that caught my eye leaned toward atmosphere, light, texture, and interesting material direction. I am especially interested in perfumes that do not simply chase the loudest trend in the room, but try to create a mood with some restraint and intelligence.

On Video This Week

This week’s videos moved between perfume discovery, real-life recommendations, industry critique, and one of the strangest intersections of perfume history, inheritance, and scandal I have covered so far.

I shared my thoughts on Gallivant Nida, which I bought after smelling it during Paris Perfume Week. This was not a blind buy. I smelled it with Nick Steward in Paris, remembered it, and ordered my bottle as soon as it became available. Nida sits in that warm floral space I love: polished, sensual, niche, and quietly transportive.

I also talked about Danner & Flemming and why their work matters if you are tired of perfume brands that feel like marketing shells with no visible production story behind them. Their work around Bavarian iris is one of the clearest examples of real niche perfumery I have seen recently: farming, patience, raw material knowledge, scientific curiosity, and a serious collaboration with Antoine Lie.

There was also a perfume-language moment this week. You know the kind: reviews that call something “ethereal,” “addictive,” “expensive-smelling,” “mysterious,” or “beast mode” without telling you anything useful about the notes, texture, projection, or what actually happens on skin.

And then there was Caron.

That video became one of the more complicated perfume stories of the week because it was not just about a perfume bottle, a heritage house, or a beautiful floral. It was about what happens when luxury history collides with inherited power, public scandal, and the uncomfortable reality of who gets to own, revive, and narrate French perfume heritage.

Caron is one of the great names of French perfumery. It never disappeared in the way some revived houses did. It carries real history, real beauty, and real cultural weight. But the current ownership story brings in the Rothschild family, Ariane de Rothschild’s documented correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, and reports that her daughters were also taken to Epstein’s island. Once you know that, the perfume story changes. The bottle does not smell different, but the context around the house becomes harder to ignore.

That is where perfume becomes more than perfume. It becomes money, legacy, access, reputation, and the stories luxury asks us to accept without asking too many questions.

Somewhere between all of that, I found myself back in the daily reality of perfume: what to wear, what to recommend, what feels elegant, what feels warm, what gets compliments from other women, and why certain perfumes keep following us around long after we thought we had moved on.

What connected everything this week was the tension between perfume as object and perfume as origin.

A bottle can be beautiful. A name can be seductive. A campaign can be convincing. But the real story begins earlier: in the field, in the lab, in the choices a brand makes before anyone starts selling fantasy.

Danner & Flemming reminded me why I still believe in niche perfume when it is done with seriousness. Gallivant reminded me that warmth and wearability can still have intelligence. And the perfume-language conversation reminded me that we need better words, not fewer of them.

The bottle is the beginning. The real story is who made it, how it was made, and why it deserved to exist.

I filmed a guide to 10 elegant perfumes every woman should smell once, focusing on refined fragrances with presence and beauty. I also shared jasmine perfumes for grown women, because jasmine can be sensual, creamy, green, radiant, and deeply elegant when handled well.

What connected everything this week was the idea that perfume is about taste, memory, culture, instinct, and emotion. It is the reason one person smells neroli and thinks of summer light, while another thinks of a bathroom. It is why Chanel 1957 can feel addictive, why Jersey can feel like a quiet room, why Spoturno 1921 needed Paris to fully open for me, and why a new brand like Investi Parfums can feel worth watching.

The bottle is the beginning. The real story is what it reveals.

This morning, while spraying Chanel Allure, I caught myself singing “Going Back to Cali,” LL Cool J’s 1988 song about desire, glamour, and the strange pull of Los Angeles.

It made me laugh because I actually did grow up in California, and Allure was one of the perfumes I wore then. For a second, it felt like a private joke between my younger self and the woman standing at the vanity now, surrounded by far more bottles than she ever had in Los Angeles.

I own many perfumes. Many of them are lovely. But if you blindfolded me and sprayed a large portion of them on strips, I doubt I could identify more than ten with certainty.

That bothers me.

I might recognize the finish before the perfume: the woody-amber glow, the clean musk trail, the saffroned warmth, the peppery-oud bite of materials like Akigalawood. Givaudan describes Akigalawood as one of its unique captive ingredients, with spicy, woody facets of patchouli and agarwood, and elsewhere describes it as derived from upcycled patchouli oil through biotechnology.

This is exactly where the machinery becomes easier to smell. A high-quality natural material such as patchouli carries agricultural cost, variation, sourcing risk, and all the complications of the natural world. A captive material belongs to a different economy. It is controlled by the company that makes it. It scales. It performs. It gives power, trail, texture, and that immediate expensive aura many modern perfumes now share.

There is nothing wrong with using it beautifully. The problem begins when the material becomes louder than the perfume.

This is also where the cult of the superstar perfumer becomes complicated. Quentin Bisch is talented, prolific, and commercially important. His work is everywhere because it speaks the language the market currently rewards: projection, radiance, instant legibility, and a kind of synthetic power that cuts through noise. But when that style appears across brand after brand, I start to question what we are calling a perfumer’s DNA. Sometimes it feels less like the signature of a singular artist and more like the signature of the supplier, the brief, the margin, and the materials the system knows how to sell.

That is why so many contemporary perfumes can smell polished, expensive, and strangely familiar at the same time. We are not always recognizing the perfume anymore. We are recognizing the machinery inside it.

My week of “going back to Cali” started to make sense when I looked at what I had actually been wearing.

Chanel Allure was the emotional key. Allure belongs to a period when a designer perfume could feel easy to wear and unmistakable at the same time. It has warmth, peach, citrus, florals, vanilla, sandalwood, amber, vetiver, and patchouli, all passing through that Chanel finish. There is softness and polish, yet a recognizable woman still lives inside it.

Then there was Sortilège by Le Galion, with aldehydes, lily of the valley, lilac, rose, iris, mimosa, narcissus, jasmine, labdanum, sandalwood, vetiver, musk, and amber. It has the architecture I had been craving without realizing it: a floral aldehyde with a waistline, shoulders, and a hem. It smells dressed.

L’Astre by Le Galion, composed by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, moved in a warmer direction: ginger, fennel, thyme, cardamom, ylang-ylang, Indian tuberose, jasmine, orange blossom, amber, Tolu balsam, Madagascar vanilla, and suede. It has spice, flowers, warmth, and skin, while the sweetness stays in proportion.

Tuberose & Moss by Rogue Perfumery, by Manuel Cross, brought back the satisfaction of a chypre shape. Bergamot, tuberose, oakmoss, labdanum, cedarwood, pimento, vanilla cream, and musk. It has firmness. Moss and tuberose give the perfume posture. It holds its ground.

Spoturno 1921, composed by Christopher Sheldrake, gave me another version of old-world elegance: bergamot, mandarin, pink pepper, rose, jasmine sambac, orris, patchouli, vanilla, and benzoin. It has that French perfume gravity I keep wanting lately, sensual and serious without becoming heavy.

Barbicaja by Spoturno, also by Sheldrake, moved through bitter orange, lavender, rosemary, cedarwood, geranium, clary sage, patchouli, vetiver, and musk. Dry herbs, bitter citrus, sun-warmed wood, an aromatic clarity that feels adult and vintage in the best sense.

Gallivant’s SOUQ WĀQIF, composed by Céline Perdriel, took the thought beyond French perfume codes. Blood orange, saffron, olibanum, patchouli, geranium, myrrh, oud, labdanum, and guaiac wood. Its vintage feeling comes through smoke caught in cloth, citrus peel crushed between fingers, saffron in warm air, resin on skin, and wood still holding the heat of the day. In the language of the youth, it is serving vintage.

Clinique Calyx has been part of the same return for me. Green, fruity, sharp, floral, almost electric, it reminded me that freshness once had bite. I understand the appeal of modern clean luxury. I own Glossier You, and I like it. Calyx speaks in a different register: grapefruit brightness, green edges, floral sharpness, and a crispness that feels alive rather than freshly laundered.

When I looked at these bottles together, I understood why they had been calling to me. The pull came from the relief of smelling perfumes that could still stand apart from the blur. Once I saw that, the industry’s abundance began to look very different.

The trouble begins with the way so many perfumes now come into the world.

A brand can present itself as intimate, artistic, disruptive, artisanal, or niche, while the perfume itself begins inside a process that is far less romantic. A brief is written. Several perfumers compete for it. In some cases, the perfumer may never have a meaningful conversation with the founder or creative director. The exchange moves through evaluators, marketing teams, trend reports, target demographics, price points, and launch calendars. The bottle may speak about memory or rebellion, while the making of it is governed by market logic from the beginning.

Exceptional perfumes still come from major labs, and many brilliant perfumers work inside them. My concern is elsewhere: what happens when thousands of brands, each selling its own mythology, are shaped by a small circle of suppliers, familiar performance targets, and the quiet discipline of profit. The large labs buy the world in bulk: flowers, woods, resins, musks, and molecules. That scale gives them power. When the same materials are used by brand after brand, niche starts to look the same as designer.

That is where the blur begins. Too many perfumes start to carry the same invisible signature: money, scale, margin, and the gigantic system working quietly behind the bottle.

It may also explain why so many women are buying so much perfume now. The behavior is easy to dismiss as overconsumption, and sometimes that is fair. I think there is a more interesting restlessness underneath it. Many women are trying to find the perfume that gives them the feeling they thought the last bottle would give them. Underneath all of it may be the desire for a bottle that finally connects with them.

That is the itch many new perfumes do not scratch.

It reminds me of food. You can dress mac and cheese with lobster, truffle, smoked gouda, caviar, five cheeses, and whatever luxury wants to prove that day. Some of it may be delicious. Eventually you want the thing itself done properly: butter, cheese, macaroni, heat, salt, calories.

Perfume feels as if it has reached a similar point.

After years of constant launches, viral notes, overworked concepts, and too many brands calling themselves niche, I find myself wanting to make perfume “great again”: florals with structure, chypres with real moss, tuberose with flesh, amber with warmth, freshness with bite, and designer scents that can be easy to wear while having a real face.

This repetition is spread across the whole market. Designer, niche, and artisanal perfume can all fall into the same trap when the category becomes crowded, brief-driven, and eager to produce the next polished thing.

That is why “Going Back to Cali” stayed with me.

This morning, standing at my vanity with Chanel Allure in the air, California was only part of what came back to me. I also remembered a time when I owned fewer perfumes and knew them better. A scent could live on a coat collar, linger in an elevator, become part of how someone was remembered.

Maybe that is what I have been reaching for all week: the part of perfume that had a clearer outline, the part that could stay. Perfume does not need endless new bottles that smell like expensive air. It needs more fragrances with shape, memory, and the courage to be unmistakable.

That is what I mean when I say perfume should go back to Cali.

I wrote that sentence down weeks ago and kept returning to it without entirely understanding why. Then one night I was lying in bed scrolling through fragrance videos and realized I had seen the same perfume at least seven times in twenty minutes. Different apartments. Different voices. Different shelves. The same bottle appearing over and over again as though everyone had independently arrived at the same conclusion.

After a while, the repetition stops feeling accidental.

Perfume culture online gives the impression of abundance. Endless launches, endless creators, endless collections lined up against beige walls and soft lighting. Yet the conversation itself feels strangely narrow. The same names circulate continuously. Delina. Baccarat Rouge 540. Erba Pura. Angels’ Share. Another “top ten sexy perfumes.” Another “hidden gem” that has already accumulated twelve million views.

I kept thinking about a conversation I had with Claude Marchal during Paris Perfume Week. We were standing outside talking for a while, and eventually the conversation drifted toward social media and how strangely narrow perfume culture has become online. Parfums MDCI has a substantial catalog and collaborations spanning perfumers including Pierre Bourdon, Bertrand Duchaufour, Francis Kurkdjian, Patricia de Nicolaï, Stéphanie Bakouche, Nathalie Feisthauer, and Cécile Zarokian. Yet online, the house often seems to collapse into the same few bottles.

Chypre Palatin. Invasion Barbare. Peche Cardinal.

Good perfumes, certainly. That was never really the issue. What stayed with me afterward was the narrowing itself. An entire house gradually compressed into a few recognizable references.

Sometimes I wonder how much of online fragrance culture is actual discovery and how much is algorithm disguised as discovery. People encounter the same names repeatedly until familiarity begins to feel like personal taste.

There is very little time now for a perfume to become interesting. A few seconds, really. Long enough for the bottle to catch light. Long enough for someone to say “beast mode” or “compliment getter” before the screen moves on. Perfume has adapted accordingly: louder openings, bigger projection, simpler emotional messaging, faster gratification.

I do not entirely blame brands for this. Attention has become its own economy. Visibility creates legitimacy. A perfume appearing constantly online begins to feel culturally important whether or not most people have actually smelled it.

The strange thing is that social media has made perfume more democratic and less adventurous at the same time. More people care about fragrance now. Younger audiences know perfumer names. Independent houses can reach consumers without department store counters or traditional beauty editors deciding what deserves visibility. Parts of this shift are genuinely exciting.

That kind of relationship feels harder to sustain online now. Everything arrives pre-interpreted. Pre-ranked. Pre-approved.

I think perfume loses something when people become too afraid of having unfashionable taste. Or private taste. Or taste that cannot immediately be validated by numbers, views, compliments, rankings, or consensus.

Sometimes I think the only way to hear certain perfumes clearly is to encounter them before the machine tells us what we are supposed to feel about them.

At Paris Perfume Week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Hiram Green, the independent perfumer behind one of the most respected natural fragrance houses working today.

We spoke about craft, natural perfumery, building an independent brand, and creating fragrance with patience in an industry that often moves too fast.

After you listen, I’m curious what stayed with you.

From the outside, it looks like a renaissance. From the inside, it looks like the moment a successful industry tips from invention into repetition.

Every creative market passes through similar phases. First come the innovators who build the category. Then come the imitators who recognize an opportunity and rush to participate. The fragrance world today is clearly shifting from the first phase to the second.

The warning sign is simple: the industry is producing far more perfume than the culture around it can meaningfully absorb. In the mid‑1990s, only a few hundred perfumes launched annually; by the mid‑2020s, that figure had climbed into the many thousands each year, with industry data showing launch volumes accelerating sharply in the last half‑decade. No art form produces thousands of masterpieces annually. What you get instead is dilution. The signal is buried under an avalanche of releases that exist less because someone had an idea, and more because the market rewards having something new.

Once that happens, the ecosystem surrounding the product begins to grow as quickly as the product itself.

The Festival Economy

One of the clearest signals of oversaturation is the sudden proliferation of fragrance events aimed directly at consumers.

Perfume fairs were historically trade gatherings where buyers, distributors, and brand owners met quietly to conduct business. Today they increasingly resemble pop culture conventions, complete with panels, meet‑and‑greets, and shopping halls for fans. ScentXplore in New York has already established itself as a large enthusiast gathering, while independent expos and regional scent fairs are appearing in cities that previously had no fragrance infrastructure at all. New events like ScentFest in San Francisco, created by content figures such as Sebastian Jara (The Perfume Guy), are explicitly designed as festivals for collectors and fans rather than industry insiders.

None of this is inherently negative. Events create visibility, content, and community. But the pattern is familiar. Sneakers went through this phase. Wine did too. Craft beer arguably perfected it. When the number of festivals surrounding a product multiplies rapidly, it usually means the culture around the product is expanding faster than the product itself.

Perfume is now entering that same territory. If the number of gatherings keeps multiplying at the current rate, the industry will soon have more perfume festivals than reasons to attend them. At that point, the events themselves become part of the oversaturation.

The Content Explosion

If events are multiplying in physical space, fragrance content is multiplying even faster online.

The barrier to entry has essentially disappeared. Anyone with a shelf of bottles and a smartphone can become a fragrance commentator. In theory this democratizes the conversation around perfume. In practice it often produces a tidal wave of repetitive commentary, where the same handful of popular fragrances circulate endlessly through social media algorithms.

The psychology behind this is rarely discussed openly. Many collectors accumulate dozens, sometimes hundreds, of bottles. Creating online content becomes a way to justify that accumulation. The collection becomes the narrative. Posting transforms personal consumption into public expertise.

The more bottles someone owns, the more incentive they have to produce content about them. The content justifies further buying. Buying fuels more content. Collecting and broadcasting fuse into a single behavior. Algorithms do not reward nuance; they reward frequency and enthusiasm. The result is an attention economy where volume beats analysis.

This does not produce better criticism. It produces more noise. The fragrance industry has quietly built an entire attention engine around this cycle.

The Decant Economy

Another predictable consequence of the fragrance boom is the rise of the decant market.

Decant businesses purchase full bottles and sell them in smaller portions, allowing consumers to sample expensive fragrances without committing to a full purchase. From the consumer perspective this is logical. Few people want to blind buy a three‑hundred‑dollar bottle in a market where thousands of perfumes launch every year and discovery budgets are finite.

From the brand perspective the situation is more complicated. Many niche houses dislike decanting because it disrupts the traditional retail model and weakens the aura of exclusivity surrounding luxury bottles. It also creates legal and reputational risks. Once a fragrance is removed from its original packaging the brand loses control over storage conditions, labeling, and product integrity, yet its name continues to be used in the resale. Decanting exists in a legal gray zone shaped by resale rights, trademark law, and consumer safety regulations. For now most brands tolerate it quietly, but only because eliminating it would be far more difficult than adapting to the consumer demand that created it.

But the uncomfortable truth is that the decant market exists because brands failed to respond to consumer behavior quickly enough. Demand for smaller formats is clear: recent market research indicates that travel‑size fragrances and minis are among the fastest growing segments globally, projected to rise from roughly 1.5 billion USD in 2023 to around 2.3 billion USD by 2031 as consumers look for variety, portability, and lower financial risk.

If brands refuse to offer smaller sizes, someone else inevitably will. Decanters did not create the demand. They simply stepped into a vacuum the industry left open. Far from being parasites on luxury, they’re a symptom of how slowly many brands adjust to what wearers actually want.

Artificial Intelligence and the Coming Flood of “Perfumers”

Technology is about to accelerate a shift that the industry has barely begun to confront.

Artificial intelligence is entering fragrance creation at remarkable speed. New scent-generation systems can analyze ingredient libraries, simulate accords, and model formulas digitally before anything is ever blended in a lab. Some platforms already help brands scan consumer preference data, test combinations virtually, and predict which scent profiles are most likely to sell. What once required months of development inside a professional fragrance house can now begin with a dataset and a piece of software.

This will not replace trained perfumers overnight. But it will change who can participate in the business of making perfume.

For most of modern perfumery, becoming a perfumer meant entering a long technical apprenticeship. Many professionals studied chemistry before training for years inside fragrance houses such as Givaudan, International Flavors & Fragrances, or Firmenich. Apprentices memorized hundreds of raw materials, studied evaporation curves and formula stability, learned regulatory frameworks, and gradually developed the ability to construct a fragrance molecule by molecule. The craft required patience, technical knowledge, and years of disciplined training.

That barrier is now beginning to erode.

Artificial intelligence tools, contract manufacturers, and expanding access to raw materials mean that entrepreneurs who once lacked the resources to experiment with fragrance can suddenly assemble a product much more easily. Development timelines shrink. Prototyping becomes cheaper. Concept-driven brands can appear almost overnight.

The result will not simply be more perfumes. It will be more people calling themselves perfumers.

Some of these newcomers will bring fresh ideas and genuine creativity. Many will produce fragrances designed primarily around trend data, algorithmic predictions, and the safest interpretations of what has sold before. If AI systems are trained on past bestsellers and popular accords, the results are likely to resemble polished echoes of existing perfumes rather than true departures from them.

The fragrance industry should prepare for an explosion of small brands in the coming years. A handful will be exceptional. Most will be forgettable. And consumers will increasingly struggle to tell the difference between a perfume composed by a trained perfumer and one assembled by a brand founder with a dataset, a supplier, and a compelling story.

Raw Material Democratization

Another structural change is happening quietly behind the scenes.

Access to fragrance ingredients is expanding. Major suppliers of naturals, such as Robertet, have begun offering online platforms where buyers can browse and purchase materials in smaller quantities suitable for small‑batch production, rather than only in industrial volumes. For the first time, independent creators can access ingredients that previously circulated mainly within professional perfumery networks.

This is a remarkable shift. It democratizes access to high‑quality materials and opens the door for independent experimentation. It also means that the number of perfume brands will likely grow even faster.

When raw materials become easier to purchase, formulation tools become easier to use, and digital platforms make it simple to reach consumers directly, the market inevitably fills with new products. Democratizing access to ingredients does not automatically democratize good taste. As supply increases, differentiation becomes harder, and the risk of aesthetic homogenization grows.

The Luxury Escape

In oversaturated markets, some brands attempt to escape the chaos by moving upward.

Expect to see more perfumes priced aggressively at four hundred dollars and beyond. These fragrances arrive wrapped in narratives about rare materials, artistic independence, and extreme exclusivity. Some will genuinely deserve their price. Many will not.

The uncomfortable truth is that a surprising number of luxury perfumes are produced using the same supply chains, laboratories, and ingredient palettes as far less expensive fragrances. The difference lies primarily in positioning. In a crowded market, price becomes theater.

In a landscape where everything shouts, a four‑hundred‑dollar price tag functions like a flare gun: it doesn’t prove the juice is better, only that you are meant to look. Luxury has always relied on storytelling. But when too many brands rely on the same story, exclusivity begins to look suspiciously like strategy rather than craftsmanship.

The Socialization of Perfume

Perhaps the most fascinating shift is cultural rather than commercial.

Perfume is becoming social.

Collectors organize swap events where bottles and samples circulate through communities. Retailers host fragrance clubs and smelling sessions. Online groups coordinate local meetups where enthusiasts gather to smell and exchange scents, sometimes adopting the rituals of a book club, except the texts are atomizers.

This transformation tells us something important about the future of fragrance. Perfume is evolving from a solitary luxury purchase into a participatory hobby. Hobbies build communities. Communities create markets. Markets invite entrepreneurs.

The same culture that fuels overspending and oversharing may also be the one that quietly decides which perfumes survive. In living rooms, Discord servers, and Telegram chats, people are already curating faster than retailers.

The Coming Reckoning

None of these trends mean that the fragrance boom is ending. But they do suggest that the industry is entering a new phase.

The imitation phase.

In this phase, the number of participants grows faster than the number of meaningful ideas. Launches multiply. Events multiply. Commentary multiplies. The industry becomes louder and busier, but not necessarily more innovative.

Eventually, the market begins to sort itself out.

The houses that survive will not be the ones releasing the most perfumes. They will be the ones confident enough to release fewer, and disciplined enough to stand for something that cannot be reduced to a hashtag. They will be the brands that prioritize identity over algorithmic visibility and craftsmanship over marketing theater.

Everyone else will simply contribute to the noise.

And there is going to be a lot of noise.

When people talk about the scent of motherhood, they usually describe it sentimentally. Powder, baby shampoo, perhaps the faint sweetness of milk or formula. The reality is more complex. Early motherhood creates its own olfactory environment, one that is intensely physical and shared.

During the twenty-three months I breastfed my daughter, scent became inseparable from proximity. She was almost always against my body, and the small world we inhabited developed its own atmosphere. Warm milk, skin, breath, and whatever perfume I happened to be wearing blended into something shared. She had sensitive skin and her cheeks would often flush after feeding, so I would wipe them gently with rose water to calm the irritation. I remember kissing those same cheeks and leaving faint traces of lipstick. Over time it became difficult to tell where her scent ended and mine began.

My husband would hold the two of us together, breathing in the small cloud of scent that surrounded us. Warm milk, skin, perfume, and the quiet sweetness of a baby’s breath. One night he leaned in, took a long breath, and said something I never forgot. If heaven existed and had a scent, he said, this would be it.

Testing Mother’s Milk immediately returned me to that idea of shared scent identity.

The fragrance opens with a dense lactonic accord that reads less like a gourmand and more like warm skin after nursing. The milk note is not sugary or edible. It feels bodily, slightly powdery, almost humid. A soft rose appears quickly and on my skin behaves less like a floral note than like rose water, cooling and transparent against the warmth of the milk accord.

The effect is intimate in a way that most perfumes avoid.

Mother’s Milk is the ninth fragrance from ERIS Parfums, and the concept behind it is unusually direct. The brand description suggests that the emotional appeal of gourmand perfumery may ultimately derive from the earliest scent humans encounter: mother’s milk. Vanilla, the cornerstone of gourmand fragrance, becomes in this reading an abstract echo of that original comfort.

Perfumer Antoine Lie approached the composition through a psychological contrast. He was asked to imagine the way children perceive their mothers as either “good” or “bad.”

The “good mother” appears through the creamy accord of milk and orris. Lie has said that he drew from a personal memory of smelling his children’s heads when his wife was breastfeeding them, a scent he describes as a creamy mixture of warm milk and orris root. The “bad mother” emerges through a darker suede note that interrupts the softness of the composition.

You can smell this tension clearly as the perfume develops.

As the fragrance moves into the heart, the orris becomes more visible. Orris butter gives the composition its distinctive cosmetic texture, the buttery powder quality associated with iris fragrances. At this stage the structure reminded me strongly of Poudre d’Or by Alberto Morillas.

Both perfumes share a creamy orris base supported by vanilla and soft woods. The difference lies in the floral architecture. Morillas uses jasmine, which gives Poudre d’Or its luminous cleanliness. Lie chooses rose, which integrates more naturally with the lactonic accord and keeps the fragrance closer to skin.

Where Poudre d’Or feels polished, Mother’s Milk feels inhabited.

The darker layer appears gradually in the base. A suede accord introduces a soft animalic shadow beneath the milk and powder. The note is subtle but essential. Without it the fragrance would risk becoming merely comforting. The suede reminds the wearer that perfume itself belongs to the adult world.

As the fragrance dries down, the milk slowly fades and the rose becomes more pronounced. On my skin the perfume ultimately becomes a soft floral skin scent. Rose has always loved my skin, and here it emerges delicately in the final hours, balanced by musk and sandalwood.

What begins as a lactonic composition resolves into something quietly feminine.

Mother’s Milk succeeds because it refuses to simplify its subject. Motherhood in perfume is often treated as purity or innocence. Lie and ERIS approach it differently. They acknowledge that motherhood contains intimacy, sensuality, dependency, comfort, and identity all at once.

For me, however, the perfume returns to something more personal. Not an abstract concept about motherhood, but the scent of those years when my daughter and I lived inside the same small atmosphere of skin, milk, perfume, and breath.

The scent my husband once said heaven must have.

He grew up in Southern California, where scent was part of the environment rather than an accessory. In summer, jasmine drifted through open windows at night, dense and persistent. The memory stayed with him and would later inform Jasmine Antique, a fragrance shaped less by abstraction than by recollection. Still, collecting gradually turned into something more analytical. “I got to a point where I started wondering how you actually put these things together.”

Cross did not come to perfumery through formal training. After high school in the early 1990s, he attended culinary school and worked professionally as a chef. He and his wife later ran a catering company for nearly a decade. Kitchens taught him proportion and restraint. Ingredients alone do not produce a finished dish; balance determines whether something holds. When he began experimenting with fragrance, he assumed instinct might be enough. It was not. Essential oils blended at home failed to resemble the perfumes he admired. “There’s a whole lot more than just mixing lemon and rose,” he says.

What followed was a long period of self-education. He began isolating materials and studying them individually, trying to understand how small aromatic fragments could form a coherent whole. Through online forums he connected with perfumer Paul Kiler and eventually spent time in his lab, observing and asking questions. Much of the learning, however, happened alone. It took nearly nine years before Cross felt he had composed something complete enough to release. Even then, refinement continued. Over time he began to focus on what he describes as the core of a fragrance, the internal structure that makes it recognizable from the first spray. “If someone sprays Eternity, you know it’s Eternity,” he says. “There’s something in there that makes it what it is.”

Rogue Perfumery launched quietly in 2017 on Etsy. There was no orchestrated debut. Interest built through fragrance communities where wearers responded to the density and classical balance of the compositions. Retailers began reaching out, and by early 2019 Cross left his regular job to focus fully on the brand, just months before the pandemic dealt a heavy blow to the restaurant industry. Today Rogue operates from Idaho Falls, where he and his wife handle production, bottling, labeling, and fulfillment themselves. The operation remains small, shaped by the same discipline that once guided their catering work.

From the beginning, his focus has been consistent. He gravitates toward traditional forms such as chypres, fougères, and tobacco-rich compositions, not to reproduce specific perfumes but to work within established frameworks. “I wasn’t looking to do copycats,” he says. “I just wanted to channel that older aesthetic.” Projection has never been the goal. “It doesn’t need to blow the walls out of the house,” he adds. For him, cohesion matters more than volume.

He no longer wears fragrance himself, preferring not to influence his own work. He also avoids reading reviews. The direction of the brand is shaped internally rather than in response to commentary. Some of Rogue’s strongest releases required that independence. Mousse Illuminee, built around fir, frankincense, laurel leaf, and moss, nearly remained unreleased. “I kept thinking no one’s going to get it,” he says. It became one of the house’s best sellers. Bonded began with a specific image of oakmoss resting in bourbon. Cross spent close to a year refining the whiskey accord before shaping the final composition. “I wanted it true to life, but not overly sweet.”

With Rogue now established, he is preparing Rogue Reserve, a line composed entirely of natural materials. The first release revisits Mousse Illuminee in all-natural form, followed by new compositions developed specifically for the collection. Working exclusively with naturals requires a different calibration. “Once you start mixing them, there’s a lot going on,” he says. The adjustments are smaller, the margin for error narrower.

Rogue remains a contained operation, but the work continues to evolve. What began as curiosity became study, and study became practice. The full conversation with Manuel Cross, including his reflections on regulation, materials, and the development of Rogue, can be viewed here.

At Elevated Classics, I have been tracking the independent side of perfumery since the beginning. The question was never romance. The question was structure. Who controls the process, who pays for experimentation, and what gets sacrificed when fragrance is treated like content.

I have spoken with Rémi Pulverail before, including an earlier interview about Les Indémodables, and what struck me then still holds now. He does not speak about perfume as a lifestyle object. He speaks about it as a system.

Pulverail is the founder of L’Atelier Français des Matières, and also a voice shaped by years inside the machinery itself. Before building his own model, he worked at the global scale of Givaudan, including senior responsibilities in naturals sourcing and strategy. That perspective, from inside procurement and inside industrial decision-making, informs the clarity of what follows.

Here is our conversation.

How Perfumes Are Actually Made Today

Most perfumes today, including many positioned as niche, are developed inside large fragrance houses through competitive briefs, tight budgets, and extremely short timelines. Perfumers are salaried, evaluated on performance, and rewarded when their formulas succeed commercially.

From your perspective, what does this system fundamentally prioritize, and what does it quietly exclude?

This model is a mass-market model based on volume and cost, constantly seeking to produce perfumes that sell. This is a purely financial approach to business which, by definition, excludes any risk-taking and, consequently, any creative exploration.

All of this is a far cry from fine craftsmanship, the pursuit of beauty, and the creative quest, for the simple reason that these companies, run by financiers, are extremely profitable and have no desire whatsoever to evolve their business model. These houses, which previously looked down on niche brands, are now forced to accept them (despite their ridiculously low sales volumes) for the simple reason that this is the only market segment experiencing strong growth with high margins, while mainstream brand projects are becoming more and more numerous, yet with increasingly lower expected revenues.

Which companies are creating and manufacturing fragrances for niche perfume brands?

Major fragrance houses who do not charge the creation, and do not expect sufficient turnover from the sales to these small or emerging brands. As a result, they mostly resell juices already on the shelves.

Independent perfumers, a rapidly growing category, but things are complicated here. First, due to the lack of training among most of them, who do not have sufficient technical foundations. There is no academic school specialized in the training of future perfumers as Roure was in the past, and let’s keep in mind that this process takes several years, just to become a junior perfumer.

As regards the quality of the ingredients used, major houses play on volume and have a cost optimization approach for their palette, while medium or small-scale fragrance houses have no clue about sourcing and buy the ingredients exclusively from local traders.

Competition Inside Fragrance Houses

How does this competitive structure affect both the work and the people making it?

In this model, multiple perfumers are often working simultaneously on the same brief, under pressure to deliver something that will win internal and external selection.

In major houses who employ armies of perfumers (Givaudan, IFF, Firmenich, Symrise), perfumers are either constrained by time and never get the chance to explore new olfactory patterns, or constrained by consumer testing, which inevitably steers them toward me-too creations.

Perfumers compete internally before they compete externally, which is terrible for atmosphere and creativity.

Brands, even if they were tempted to launch truly innovative fragrances, no longer give a perfume the time to establish itself on the market. Let’s remember that Angel from Mugler (last perfume that made a strong statement and gave rise to a new olfactory family) had very poor sales until year four after it launched.

Budgets and Ingredient Quality

You’ve explained that once margins are accounted for, perfumers are often left with very limited budgets to compose a formula. What does this mean concretely for ingredient choice and overall juice quality?

This is quite simple. Today, whether it be in fine fragrance creation for major brands or niche, the budget price perfumers have to formulate does not allow them to use, in a significant amount, the most precious natural ingredients. You need to know that almost all formulas on the market are made of four or five cheap ingredients that represent more than fifty percent of the formula.

Why? Because this is the way the industry has worked for decades. Marketers prefer to invest in packaging (or advertisement for larger brands) rather than in the juices. And probably, entrepreneurs or brand directors of niche brands still think the consumer has no education, and will not make the difference whatever the quality.

All of this becomes truly scandalous when you see the price of perfumes, which keeps rising.

Speed Versus Exploration

Development timelines today are measured in weeks.

What is lost creatively when perfumers simply do not have time to explore structures that fall outside proven formulas?

In major houses, a perfumer is managing several projects at the same time with very short deadlines. No time to test bold and innovative accords, or new ingredients never used before. Creativity is reduced to nothing when so-called creators retreat into controlled, familiar formulas and, of course, impoverish perfumery. Something everyone can observe today.

On Consumer Testing

Consumer testing plays a decisive role in selecting which formulas move forward.

Who actually makes these decisions, and what is their relationship to perfume?

Yes, today perfumery is a massive industry and most of its leaders have been trained at P&G, Unilever or Coty, and manage the perfume business the same way, massively using consumer testing and benchmarking. Most of the leaders of these giant companies are pure financial people and have not a single clue of what a perfume really is. This lack of cultural depth among executives turns the perfume industry into just another industry, with profit expectations, share prices, and the like.

In your view, does consumer testing merely guide creativity, or does it actively filter out anything unfamiliar or challenging?

Consumer tests inevitably lead to converging toward the benchmark. Everything is said.

Perfumes are launched worldwide and the objective is to please everyone and finally turn it into a blockbuster for the companies involved (brand and fragrance house).

As regards niche, new brand owners are mostly entrepreneurs who do not know anything about perfumery and will therefore, most of the time, follow trends as regards the fragrance creation.

On Why Perfumes Smell Increasingly Similar

When benchmarking, trend alignment, and test performance become dominant decision tools, sameness becomes almost inevitable.

Do you think the current olfactive landscape reflects a lack of talent, or a lack of freedom?

This is, in my opinion, both a lack of risk-taking and a lack of knowledge (perfume creation process, ingredients, perfume history, distribution, consumer expectations), because before breaking the rules, you need to master them.

On So-Called Niche Brands

Many small niche brands now work within the same fragrance house system as major brands, often unknowingly from the consumer’s perspective.

In practical terms, how different is the creative process for these brands compared to mainstream launches?

Unfortunately, in small fragrance brands, fragrance formulas are most of the time reverse-engineered using a very effective tool: gas chromatography, which makes it very easy to copy or reproduce a leading fragrance from the market. The perfumer will then tweak the formula at the margins to make it slightly different. This is what is known in perfumery as a twist.

Entrepreneurs investing in the perfume space do not have a single clue of what perfumery is and therefore prefer to limit the risk as regards the fragrance creation. Most of them think a good marketing concept is the key element to build a successful brand.

On Recycled Formulas

You’ve spoken openly about the use of existing collection juices that are slightly modified to fit a brief. How common is this practice today, and why is it so difficult for consumers to detect?

This is unfortunately 95% of the launches, but consumers are more and more educated (especially in the niche space) and probably more expert than brand owners themselves. These expert consumers are fully aware of that situation. We see their comments every day at our own boutique, and on our social networks.

On Independent Perfumers

Independent perfumers work very differently. They are paid for their creative work instead of winning competitions, and they are no longer in competition once selected for a project.

How does this shift change the way they approach a blank page?

The challenge for independent perfumers is that most lack formal academic training and have learned the craft on the fly. Becoming a true perfumer is an extremely long and demanding process, and today there is no longer a reputable school to train the perfumers of tomorrow.

Therefore too many of them reproduce existing patterns or create formulas that are often unbalanced and lacking in harmony.

The few who have had academic training have freed themselves from the constraints and rigid frameworks imposed on perfumers employed by large companies. As a result, they can take much more time to develop a fragrance and explore olfactory structures that venture off the beaten path.

On Risk and Uncertainty

Independent perfumery comes with financial uncertainty and far fewer guarantees.

Why do you believe this uncertainty creates conditions for meaningful creative work?

Starting a new perfume brand is a major investment and, as you know, today the market is more than crowded. It is impossible to be authentically niche if you do not have the adequate knowledge about the mainstream market. As previously said, before breaking the rules, you need to master them.

Having said that, I fully agree with your statement as regards uncertainty. True artists create because they are in a constant state of tension. They are completely free, not bound by the rules of any market, and the element of uncertainty (success or failure, limited financial resources) is probably a determining factor in the creative process.

On the Absence of Marketing Filters

When there is no marketing team, no consumer testing, and no trend mandate between the brand owner and the perfumer, what kinds of decisions become possible that simply are not in an industrial framework?

Independent small and emerging perfume brands are started and managed by purely marketing people.

For a small emerging brand, the challenge is that the perfumer commissioned for the project often pushes it toward a safe, crowd-pleasing fragrance to minimize risk, which is unwise, given that the market is already saturated with such consensual scents.

If you look at some niche brands that have been successful and even pioneers (Frédéric Malle before the EL acquisition, Etat Libre d’Orange or Serge Lutens), all of them have been created by people who have had a background in perfumery.

On Your Role as a Laboratory

Rather than employing salaried perfumers, your lab positions itself as a support structure for independent creators.

What does support mean in practice, and how do you avoid recreating the same hierarchies you critique?

Our way of working is very clear, and quite uncompromising, I must admit. We impose, in particular, qualitative constraints to the independent perfumers we collaborate with.

We only collaborate with independent perfumers with a sufficient background and technical know-how (Antoine Lie, you know him; Delphine Dentraygues has been trained many years by Maurice Roucel, and Andrea de Lassus has been trained by Nicolai).

We impose a significant use of precious naturals, and our exclusive labelled Grands Crus, in the formulas created at our lab, which means a much higher budget. In return, we are transparent as regards the percentage of the most expensive naturals used in each formula. Clients who are not willing to follow this approach are redirected elsewhere.

We also impose to perfumers to start from a blank page in terms of fragrance creation and never work using a fragrance library, with ready-made juices.

On Materials as a Starting Point

You place unusual emphasis on ingredients themselves as a creative foundation rather than interchangeable inputs.

How does working with exceptional raw materials change the way a perfume is imagined from the very beginning?

Working with a high concentration of precious natural ingredients requires a specific technique that typical perfumers, accustomed to strict cost constraints, usually do not have. In the end, we find that such fragrances have many more facets, are less linear, and become more captivating, revealing something new each time they are worn.

Ultimately, we don’t use expensive natural extracts just to say we’re using precious ingredients. We do it because they genuinely produce a different result and evoke a unique emotion when worn.

In fact, the classic formulas that were successful for decades, for example, the classic Guerlains, were of this kind and have stood the test of time for a reason. This is the kind of perfumery that interests us, and we try to work with the same level of rigor as in the past, but without a backward-looking vision, staying aligned with our time, particularly by taking advantage of the extraordinary tools available today.

On the Grand Crus Ingredients

You’ve gone as far as making these ingredients available to perfume lovers through the Grand Crus Ingredients Box, allowing them to smell materials outside of finished formulas. Why was it important to expose the raw materials themselves, rather than letting them remain abstract concepts?

Because our aim is also to show passionate clients what, for us, constitutes the luxury of a perfume: first and foremost, its precious ingredients. The second element of this authentic luxury is the creativity of the perfumer who will use these ingredients, and this is, of course, where Antoine Lie’s role is crucial.

We also believe we have a mission to educate these lovers of fine perfumery, and we intend to do so increasingly, using ever more sophisticated tools. Our goal is to equip perfume lovers with the technical knowledge to judge for themselves, with discernment, and to help them refine their taste. This takes time, patience, and commitment, all of which we have in abundance, even with our modest resources.

On Smelling Versus Reading

Most consumers encounter ingredients through note lists and marketing language.

What do you think changes when someone actually smells a high-quality patchouli, rose, or vanilla on its own?

I think all of this is quite straightforward and shouldn’t be reserved for so-called experts. It’s just like dining at a restaurant. You can immediately tell the difference between thawed scallops and fresh ones. In perfumery, it’s the same. A far more powerful emotion arises instantly when you encounter a truly high-quality ingredient. To me, it is an intuitive response to beauty.

You can make the test easily by smelling vanillin together with a good vanilla absolute. There is a world of difference.

On Extraction as Authorship

You speak about extraction methods, vintage crops, and plant pre-treatment as decisive creative acts.

At what point does extraction stop being technical and become a form of authorship?

Extraction is just one step in the long journey that results in an ingredient earning our Grand Cru designation. Everything starts with the sourcing of the plant material. We work with our producers to identify specific plots, which we then compare with others to select the perfect plant, best suited for what we want to create.

Next comes the pre-treatment phase, which can include drying, roasting, aging, fermentation of the plant before the actual extraction begins. All these elements, these details to which we pay meticulous attention, completely change the outcome in the end as regards the olfactive profile.

On Control of the Production Chain

You also emphasize control over the entire production process, including bottling.

Where is this control most essential: in preserving quality, protecting creative intent, or enabling refusal?

The perfume-making process involves numerous steps, all of which we pay great attention to. Custom maturation and maceration phases are a prime example, but there are many other techniques we apply that are perfectly suited to small-scale productions like ours.

Of course, on a large scale, it would be absolutely impossible to implement all these small details and careful attentions, but this is true in all artisanal trades.

In perfumery, even niche perfumery, no house controls the entire manufacturing process like we do. It’s funny because no one seems to be surprised by this. It’s a bit like going to a three-Michelin-star restaurant and discovering at the end that there’s no kitchen and everything was delivered. Wouldn’t you be shocked? In perfumery, nobody is.

On Les Indémodables as an Alternative Model

Les Indémodables is often cited as proof that another way of making perfume is possible.

What compromises have you deliberately refused in order to preserve this model?

Our fragrance formulas are about ten times more expensive than what you can find elsewhere, and we are proud of that. Our ingredients and formulas increasingly include our exclusive natural ingredients, making them ever harder to copy, and we take pride in that as well.

We also deliberately limit the brand’s development, striving to maintain a controlled, human-sized distribution network, where we take the time to provide proper training. We remain with independent retailers and will never go into chains, because we place the utmost importance on maintaining human relationships, which means independent perfumeries.

Our productions are limited and will remain so, as many of our precious ingredients are rare and not available in large quantities. This limitation is our business model, and we fully embrace it.

We are the only house to have implemented a binding and transparent Charter of Excellence, and we are proud of that.

On the State of the Industry

You’ve suggested that the mass-perfumery model may be reaching the end of its cycle. What concrete signs do you see that suggest this system is no longer sustainable?

I don’t think mass-market perfumery is dead, far from it. What I do think is that perfumery as it exists today will have to drastically evolve,, because the current business model will increasingly fail.

Google is entering the mainstream market, and I wish the major fragrance houses good luck. Nowadays, everyone talks about AI, AI-assisted fragrance creation, all in pursuit of that holy grail: the universal perfume that will make a company a millionaire. But if data becomes the key success factor, it won’t be the current fragrance houses that come out on top. It will be the companies that control the data: Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook.

The model of major fragrance houses is at breaking point because it relies on a free and competitive creation phase. Twenty years ago, fragrance houses could manage because when they won a brief, the volumes were substantial and the formula would sell for many years. Today, the market is far too fragmented, and the product’s lifespan far too short to amortize the development phase.

The only solution is to shorten the creation phase, either by more frequently using existing fragrances on the shelf, or by providing automated assistance to perfumers (generative AI) so they can produce more formulas faster.

As for independent perfumery and the current surge of activity, it’s both a challenge and a positive development. A challenge because many brands adopt a purely marketing-driven approach, replicating the same biases of mass-market perfumery that we strive to avoid. But a positive development because there’s also a fresh, invigorating energy sweeping through the sector.

On Guidance for Perfume Lovers

For people who love perfume but feel increasingly disconnected from what’s on the market, what should they be paying attention to if they want to support real creative work?

One must avoid purely marketing-driven approaches, ask questions about transparency, ingredients, find out who the perfumer is and where they come from, and pay attention to all the details that brands often try to hide or deliberately keep vague.

It’s also essential to develop a perfume culture in order to judge more effectively, to rediscover the scents of classic perfumes, and to understand where perfumery comes from, and where it has lost its way.

I think this can be compared to the difficulty many people have in appreciating modern art. There is an essential need for knowledge of art history and of the artist’s journey whose works one is contemplating, in order to understand abstraction, and then there is the subjective dimension of the emotion one may feel, or not, when faced with an abstract work.

On Distribution and Where Perfume is Actually Presented

Regarding the distribution network, which remains the key point of any project, since it is the ultimate place where a perfumer’s creations are presented.

What role does the point of sale play in how a perfume is actually understood?

Let us start with an example that is particularly striking to us: the brand Serge Lutens, one of the pioneers of auteur perfumery, whose collection includes some true works of art, yet which has adopted a distribution strategy that runs completely counter to expectations.

This brand adopted a mass-market distribution network, where sales teams are absolutely not trained to present a brand that remains niche and demanding. As a result, it ends up lost among dozens of brands displayed on shelves. Distribution is too often the poor relation in brand strategy, or else the strategy is simply to sell as much as possible, which runs completely counter to the spirit of auteur perfumery.

Auteur perfumery, in our view, should be represented in points of sale that practice seated, consultative selling, taking the time to explain an approach and to smell the fragrances with customers, guided by people who have been properly trained.

I still remember visiting Geneva last month and going into one of the major department stores on Rue du Rhône that has a so-called auteur perfumery section. For 45 minutes, I was able to smell many perfumes on display without the saleswoman, who was less than five meters away from me, ever once taking the initiative to approach me and offer advice.

The numbers will continue. More launches, tighter margins, faster cycles. But the conversation has moved. The question was never romance. The question was always structure. Who controls the process. Who pays for the time to explore. What gets protected when budgets tighten.

Pulverail’s model is deliberately unscalable. That is the point. It exists as proof that perfumery can function differently when the incentives change, when materials stop being interchangeable, when the people making decisions understand what they are actually making.

The industry will not reform itself. It will shift only when consumers stop buying the script.

For now, 6,000 launches a year. And a handful of people asking where the fragrance actually comes from.
