COLUMBIA, MO., 4 de noviembre de 2026 — Hoy desperté pellizcándome para asegurarme de que la noticia de anoche fuera cierta y no solo un sueño hermoso: que una ola azul gigantesca había barrido esta tierra y despejado cualquier idea de que el país más rico de la historia del mundo fuera a convertirse en una nación racista, misógina y autoritaria. La idea de que habíamos retrocedido a una condición degenerativa en la que la democracia se desintegraba rápidamente ante nuestros ojos, y de que no había absolutamente nada que pudiéramos hacer al respecto.

Hice un repaso rápido por mis redes y confirmé que, en efecto, era cierto. Y más — mucho más. Más que una ola azul, estábamos viviendo un tsunami azul.

Y el primer mensaje que vi en mi bandeja de entrada venía de mi amigo y hermano venezolano, Mario Van Dam. Un venezolano-misuriano que hace muchos años bailó conmigo bajo las estrellas antes de regresar para siempre a la tierra de su nacimiento.

“¿Qué está pasando de verdad allá?”, quería saber Mario. “O sea, estoy leyendo las noticias y tratando de entenderlo, y me encantaría escuchar tu perspectiva sobre todo esto.”

Mario ahora es ciego, y por eso esta vez voy a incluir (próximamente) una versión en audio, con gratitud hacia él por el simple pretexto de escritura que necesitaba para escribir esta columna. Porque no tengo duda de que habrá bibliotecas enteras de escritos sobre lo que pasó ayer en los EE. UU. Pero quizá ninguno desde la perspectiva de esta servidora, una persona de raíces rurales en un estado profundamente rojo, cuyo corazón fue conquistado desde joven por una América Latina que sangraba por las heridas de una política exterior estadounidense depredadora y violenta.

Sí, crecí en la era de las guerras civiles centroamericanas patrocinadas por Estados Unidos, del escándalo de Irán-Contra, en el que millones de nuestros dólares de impuestos se gastaron en secreto e ilegalmente para financiar a los malos — y hablo de tipos asesinos con hacha y violadores — en países donde el único crimen de una persona, bajo pena de muerte, era alzar la voz por sus derechos y tratar de defender la dignidad de su familia y de su comunidad. Muchos de ellos eran pueblos indígenas que defendían sus territorios de las depredaciones de las corporaciones multinacionales.

¿Y qué tiene que ver todo eso con la Ola Azul de anoche?

Pues mucho. Para mí personalmente, y para nosotros como país.

Porque la misma mentalidad que nos permite quedarnos de brazos cruzados mientras nuestros dólares de impuestos se usan para acribillar a pescadores inocentes en el Caribe y secuestrar a un presidente y a su esposa en plena noche para robarle las reservas de petróleo a esa nación, es la misma mentalidad que nos permitió quedarnos de brazos cruzados cuando, en mi juventud, nuestros dólares de impuestos se usaron para asesinar a un estimado de 300,000 personas en las guerras civiles centroamericanas — la abrumadora mayoría de ellas civiles, y una parte desproporcionada de ellas mayas indígenas y otros pueblos originarios — lo cual ni siquiera incluye las dictaduras igualmente sangrientas patrocinadas por Estados Unidos en Chile, Brasil, Argentina, Uruguay y Paraguay que precedieron a esas guerras.

Es la misma mentalidad que nos obliga a mirar hacia otro lado cuando nuestros vecinos y amigos y ayudantes morenos y negros son detenidos en masa, acechados en sus casas, escuelas y lugares de trabajo, y dejados a pudrirse y a veces a morir en centros de detención por todo este país — dentro de un sistema carcelario que ha crecido hasta proporciones escalofriantes. En un solo año reciente, el ICE hizo pasar a unos 700,000 personas por su red de detención — unas seis veces el número de encarcelados durante todo el vergonzoso internamiento de los japoneses-americanos en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Y desde que comenzó la escalada de la detención masiva, el ICE ha procesado a un estimado de 4 millones de personas en total — unas 33 veces los 120,000 internados en el punto más alto de los campos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Y es la misma mentalidad que nos permite descargar muerte y destrucción sobre Gaza, Irán y Líbano — aunque sea a través de un tercero demente.

Pero Mario, tú ya sabes todo esto, claro, entonces ¿por qué te estoy recitando esta historia dolorosa como si no la supieras? Porque necesito que sepas que yo sé, y que nosotros sabemos. Y que anoche dimos un paso — un paso pequeño, de eso no hay duda, pero muy real — hacia la reparación de esos agravios.

Y anoche le dijimos al mundo: la América que alguna vez admiraste, a la que alguna vez miraste como un faro de democracia y derechos humanos e igualdad y libertad y justicia para todos, no ha desaparecido bajo la ola roja de sangre de la corrupción, el interés propio y la depravación. Todavía estamos aquí, y estamos decididos a recuperarlo todo.

Lo que le mostramos al mundo a todo color durante la última década fue la caricatura del Americano Feo, hinchado y engreído, desfilando por el mundo con un sentido autocomplaciente de su propia importancia, agarrando lo que podía para su propio imperio personal y su propio ego a un costo devastador para la humanidad y para el planeta. Y suficientes de nosotros aquí en Estados Unidos pudimos verlo también — a pesar de los miles de millones gastados para distorsionar nuestra visión de la realidad hasta volverla irreconocible — suficientes de nosotros vimos esa imagen repugnante de nosotros mismos que despertamos. Y fuimos y nos formamos en fila por nuestra calcomanía de “Yo Voté” en números históricos. Jóvenes y viejos, gente de color y gente blanca, personas con discapacidad y gente sana y fuerte que venía directo del gimnasio.

Y suficientes de nosotros dijimos NO. Eso NO es lo que somos. No es lo que hemos sido nunca, ni lo que seremos jamás.

Sí, hemos cometido grandes crímenes contra el mundo, y muchos de esos ciudadanos realmente no tienen idea. Pero están empezando a vislumbrarlo, y están despertando. Y una vez que estamos despiertos — no vamos a volver a dormirnos. Lo sepan o no los que todavía sostienen las palancas de un poder ahora muy reducido.

Y aquí van algunos números para confirmar de verdad que el cambio es real.

Pueblos indígenas: Por primera vez en la historia, una mujer indígena fue elegida gobernadora de un estado: Deb Haaland, del pueblo Laguna Pueblo, en Nuevo México. En total, más de 20 candidatos indígenas ganaron carreras por todo el país. Entre ellos, Peggy Flanagan (Ojibwe) ganó un escaño en el Senado — la primera mujer indígena en llegar ahí — y en la Cámara de Representantes ganaron Sharice Davids (Ho-Chunk), Claire Valdez (Pueblo Ysleta del Sur) y otros.

Latinos: California y Texas eligieron a sus primeros gobernadores latinos, y más de 300 candidatos latinos ganaron carreras en todo el país. El Caucus Hispano del Congreso tendrá su clase más grande de la historia, con más de 50 miembros. Y un reconocimiento especial a Gina Hinojosa, que hizo historia como la primera mujer elegida gobernadora de Texas en casi cuatro décadas — y la primera gobernadora latina en la historia de EE. UU.

Afroamericanos: El Congreso tendrá una representación negra récord, con más de 60 miembros en la Cámara y el Senado. También hubo victorias históricas en carreras estatales y locales por todo el país. Y por primera vez, el Senado tendrá tres miembros negros sirviendo al mismo tiempo — un hito histórico — mientras que dos gobernadores negros fueron elegidos en carreras estatales, lo que marca una expansión significativa del liderazgo negro en los cargos más altos.

Musulmanes americanos: Varios candidatos musulmanes ganaron escaños en el Congreso y en legislaturas estatales — un avance notable para la comunidad en la política. Las mujeres: Este fue uno de los años más importantes para las mujeres en la política de EE. UU. Al menos 17 mujeres serán gobernadoras en 2027 — un récord, por encima del máximo anterior de 14. Por primera vez en la historia, el país tendrá una gobernadora negra (Keisha Lance Bottoms, en Georgia) y una gobernadora indígena (Deb Haaland, en Nuevo México).

El Senado también tendrá tres mujeres negras sirviendo al mismo tiempo por primera vez en la historia — otro hito sin precedentes. Y en el Congreso, al menos 116 mujeres demócratas ocuparán escaños, superando el récord anterior de 111.

Las mujeres no solo ganaron escaños — impulsaron la ola demócrata, siendo responsables de al menos 10 escaños en la Cámara que cambiaron de partido.

Y entonces, Mario, mi hermano: sí, pasó. Más que un sueño, más que una ola — una marea que barrió esta tierra y que, por una noche al menos, nos recordó quiénes somos. Todavía estamos aquí. Y apenas estamos empezando.

A Blue Tsunami, and a Step Toward Righting Wrongs

COLUMBIA, MO., Nov. 4, 2026 — Today I awoke pinching myself to make sure that last night’s news was true, and not just a beautiful dream: That a massive blue wave had washed over this land and cleared away any notion that the richest country in the history of the world was going to be a racist, misogynistic, authoritarian nation. The notion that we had somehow regressed to a degenerative condition in which democracy was rapidly disintegrating in front of our eyes, and that there was nothing at all we could really do about it.

I did a quick scroll through my feeds and confirmed that indeed it was true. And more — much more. More than a blue wave, we were experiencing a blue tsunami.

And the first message I saw in my inbox came from my Venezuelan friend and brother, Mario Van Dam. A former Venezuela-Missourian who many years ago danced with me under the stars before returning forever to the home of his birth.

“What is really happening there?” Mario wanted to know. “I mean, I’m reading the news and trying to understand it, and I’d love to just hear your perspective on it all.”

Mario is now blind, and so I will be including an audio version this time, with gratitude to him for just the writing prompt I needed to write this column. Because I have no doubt that there will be libraries’ worth of writing about what happened yesterday in the USA. But perhaps none from the perspective of me, a person with rural roots in a deep red state whose heart was won at a young age by a Latin America bleeding from the wounds of a predatory and violent US foreign policy.

Yes, I came of age during the era of US-sponsored civil war in Central America, of the Iran-Contra scandal in which millions of our tax dollars were secretly and illegally spent to fund the bad guys — and I mean axe-murderer and rapist types of bad guys — in countries where a person’s only crime, on pain of death, was to speak out for his or her rights and try to defend their family and their community’s dignity. Many of whom were Indigenous peoples defending their territories from the predations of multinational corporations.

So what does that have to do with the Blue Wave that happened last night?

Well, plenty. For me personally, and for us as a country.

Because the same mentality that allows us to stand by while our tax dollars are being used to gun down innocent fishermen in the Caribbean and kidnap a president and his wife in the middle of the night in order to steal that nation’s oil reserves, is the same mentality that allowed us to stand by when, in my youth, our tax dollars were used to murder an estimated 300,000 people across the Central American civil wars — the overwhelming majority of them civilians, and a disproportionate share of them Indigenous Maya and other native peoples — which doesn’t even include the equally bloody US-sponsored dictatorships in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay that preceded those wars.

It’s the same mentality that compels us to look the other way when our brown and black neighbors and friends and helpers are rounded up en masse, stalked in their homes and schools and workplaces, and left to rot and sometimes die in detention centers around this country — within a carceral system that has grown to staggering proportions. In a single recent year, ICE cycled roughly 700,000 people through its detention network — about six times the number incarcerated over the entire course of the shameful Japanese-American internment during World War II. And since the escalation of mass detention began, ICE has processed an estimated 4 million people in total — roughly 33 times the 120,000 interned at the height of the WWII camps.

And it’s the same mentality that allows us to rain death and destruction on Gaza and Iran and Lebanon — albeit through a deranged third party.

But Mario, you of course already know this, so why am I reciting this painful history to you as if you don’t? Because I need for you to know that I know, and that we know. And that last night, we took a step — a small step, to be sure, but a very real one — toward righting those wrongs.

And last night we said to the world: The America that you once admired, that you once looked to as a beacon of democracy and human rights and equality and liberty and justice for all, has not vanished under the blood-red wave of corruption, self-interest, and depravity. We are still here, and we are determined to take it all back.

What we showed the world in full living color over the past decade was the caricature of the bloated and self-important Ugly American, parading around the world in a self-congratulatory sense of his own importance, grabbing what he could for his own personal empire and his own ego at a devastating cost to humanity and to the planet. And enough of us here in the US were able to see it, too — despite the billions spent to distort our vision of reality beyond recognition — enough of us saw that disgusting image of ourselves that we woke up. And we went and stood in line for our “I Voted” sticker in historic numbers. Young people and old people, people of color and white people, disabled people and healthy, buff, strong people straight from the gym.

And enough of us said NO. That is NOT who we are. It is not who we have ever been, or will ever be.

Yes, we have committed great crimes against the world, and many of those citizens really have no idea. But they are beginning to get an inkling, and they are waking up. And once we are woke — we will not go back to sleep. Whether the ones still holding the levers of a now much-reduced power are aware of it or not.

And here are a few numbers to really nail down the facts that the change is real.

Indigenous peoples: For the first time in history, an Indigenous woman was elected governor of a state: Deb Haaland, of the Laguna Pueblo, in New Mexico. In total, more than 20 Indigenous candidates won races across the country. Among them, Peggy Flanagan (Ojibwe) won a Senate seat — the first Indigenous woman to get there — and in the House of Representatives, Sharice Davids (Ho-Chunk), Claire Valdez (Ysleta del Sur Pueblo) and others won.

Latinos: California and Texas elected their first Latino governors, and more than 300 Latino candidates won races nationwide. The Hispanic Caucus in Congress will have its largest class ever, with more than 50 members. And a special shout-out to Gina Hinojosa, who made history as the first woman to be elected governor of Texas in nearly four decades — and the first Latina governor in U.S. history.

African Americans: Congress will have record Black representation, with more than 60 members in the House and Senate. There were also historic wins in state and local races across the country. And for the first time, the Senate will have three Black members serving at once — a historic milestone — while two Black governors were elected in state races, marking a significant expansion of Black leadership in the highest offices.

Muslim Americans: Several Muslim candidates won seats in Congress and state legislatures — a notable step forward for the community in politics. One of the most inspiring races was Dr. Abdul Al-Sayed, an epidemiologist and Harvard-trained public health administrator, who ran an uphill battle against tropes of jihad, Muslim Brotherhood, and terrorism thrown at him repeatedly — and responded with dignity, humor, and an intelligence that far outstripped his aggressors.

Against ICE: In several cities and states, voters approved initiatives to limit cooperation with ICE and curb mass deportation — a direct blow to the government’s hardline immigration policy. In Colorado, voters passed a measure barring local law enforcement from detaining people solely for immigration purposes and limiting state cooperation with federal immigration agents. New York City voters approved a measure enshrining the city’s “sanctuary” policies into the city charter, protecting immigrant communities from federal crackdowns. And in Chicago, voters passed an advisory measure calling for the city to strengthen its protections for undocumented residents.

Together, these votes sent a clear message that communities are pushing back against the federal crackdown on immigrants.

The women: This was one of the most important years for women in U.S. politics. At least 17 women will serve as governors in 2027 — a record, up from the previous high of 14. For the first time in history, the country will have a Black woman governor (Keisha Lance Bottoms, in Georgia) and an Indigenous woman governor (Deb Haaland, in New Mexico).

The Senate will also seat three Black women serving at the same time for the first time ever — another unprecedented milestone. And in Congress, at least 116 Democratic women will hold seats, surpassing the previous record of 111.

Women didn’t just win seats — they drove the Democratic wave, accounting for at least 10 House seats that flipped parties.

And so, Mario, my brother: yes, it happened. More than a dream, more than a wave — a tide that washed over this land and, for one night at least, reminded us who we are. We are still here. And we are just getting started.

Wixárika, Cora, Nayeri, Tepehuano, Nahua — and then there was me, as far as I could tell the lone teiwari, the Wixárika word for a non-Indigenous outsider.

We rode through the night toward Mexico City, 11 hours on a bus slowed again and again by accidents until traffic finally stopped altogether. Beside me, Aukwe Mijarez — Sofía by her Spanish name, spokeswoman and communications coordinator for the Wixárika Regional Council for the Defense of Wirikuta and the Sacred Sites — carefully applied her eyeliner in the dim light as I wrote in my notebook.

By the time we reached the Casa de los Pueblos y Comunidades Indígenas “Samir Flores Soberanes” around 9 that morning, I was exhausted and knew only that I had arrived at the 30th anniversary gathering of the Congreso Nacional Indígena.

I had no idea yet how much history was contained inside that building — or how much history would be waiting for us when we boarded the bus home.

From my notebook, Oct. 10-11-12, 2026

MEXICO CITY, Oct. 10 - It’s been a long night, 11 hours aboard a bus full of Wixaritaris and Nahuatls and Nayeris and Tepehuanos and and Coras and I don’t know who else. Accidents along the way slowed us to a crawl and then an absolute stop several times. We finally arrived around 9 at the Casa de los Pueblos y las Comunidades Indígenas “Samir Flores Soberanes,” formerly the installations of INPI, the government agency tasked with serving Indigenous communities.

There’s a story there but I am only beginning to get an inkling of it.

In an “only in Mexico” surprise, I learn that one of the things being celebrated here is the six-year anniversary of the “Toma del INPI,” the peaceful occupation of this five-story building by displaced Otomí women from Queretaro who had been living in desperate poverty for years and finally banded together to evict the government employees from their offices and take over the building and turn it into housing for homeless Indigenous families, a community center and meeting space and, most surprisingly, one the most important archives of Indigenous art in the country.

The walls are papered with dramatic and colorful posters illustrating iconic moments in the movement’s colorful history, in which the Zapatistas figure prominently.

After registration we were led to the comedor, once an employee parking space, now decorated with colorful and defiant murals (Migration is not a crime; discrimination is,” for example) and emanating mouth-watering aromas. A hearty and delicious breakfast was being served up by women in colorful laced collars whom I would later learn were the Otomí women who had taken over this building, created this space, and organized the logistics to receive nearly 1,000 people over the next three days.

I traveled with Aukwe Mijarez, or Sofía by her Spanish name, who was applying her eyeliner in the seat beside me as I wrote. Spokeswoman and communications coordinator for the Wixárika Regional Council for the Defense of Wirikuta and the Sacred Sites, she was at turns serious and focused, and finally relaxed, and we were able to have some good conversations and hearty laughs during a night I will treasure always.

“¡Zapata vive! La lucha sigue!” the chant begins to animate the crowd. Emiliano Zapata, the Indigenous revolutionary hero who once said, “It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees,” definitely lives on in this place, and the struggle clearly continues, in a thousand different ways.

Aukwe leaves to take her seat in the front, in the lineup of a couple dozen or so delegates, each representing one of Mexico’s 68 different Indigenous peoples. Marichuy takes the mic and the chants turn to a cheer. María de Jesús Patricio Martínez is the “Vocera”—the spokeswoman, as the organization named her years ago and as she was depicted in the award-winning documentary of the same name. Better known as “Marichuy,” Patricio Martínez is most famously known as Mexico’s first and only Indigenous woman to run for the Mexican presidency.

The inauguration was an inspiring affair, under a tent in front of the building large enough to hold the more than 600 people who had come from 22 states as well as Spain, Italy, Greece, Guatemala, the US, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil to attend this 30th anniversary gathering. One of the masters of ceremonies was a remarkable young woman in Otomí dress, Anselma Margarito, who was only 18 when she and her family and fellow community members took over the INPI building (interview to come).

I have penned the details of this enormously inspiring event in this story for Mexico News Daily (shared in The Esperanza Project with their permission) and will be telling the story of the takeover of the government building next.

By the final afternoon, the gathering had taken on a weight none of us could have anticipated.

News came that Carlos Chávez Reyes — one of the founders of the CNI, a pioneer of Mexico’s Indigenous-rights movement and my friend and mentor of many years — had passed from this Earth.

When his name was announced from the stage, hundreds of people rose into a full minute of thunderous applause.

Carlos was never a man who sought the spotlight. Much of what he did happened quietly, behind the scenes: advising communities, helping recover Indigenous lands, defending sacred territories, building alliances, showing up again and again over decades. He had accompanied many of the people gathered there, and many of their struggles, for most of his adult life.

Then the speeches ended. The delegates filled their bowls one last time, gathered their things and climbed back onto the bus.

This time we were not simply going home.

We drove through the night toward Tonalá, arriving at the funeral home around 4 in the morning. Some 40 Indigenous delegates descended from the bus in their traditional clothing, bleary-eyed and exhausted after three days of meetings and another long overnight journey. Many were silently weeping as we made our way together into the room where Carlos — friend, counselor, companion and defender of so many — lay impossibly still.

Only hours earlier, those same people had been debating how to carry the CNI forward for another generation.

Now they had come to accompany one of the men who had helped bring it into being.

I cannot imagine a more fitting tribute to Carlos Chávez than that bus arriving before dawn: Wixaritari, Nahuas, Nayeris, Tepehuanos and Coras coming straight from the 30th anniversary of the Congreso Nacional Indígena to stand beside him one last time.

The journey had begun with all of us heading toward a gathering about resistance, memory and what must be carried forward.

It ended with the clearest expression of those things I could have imagined.

De un autobús nocturno a 30 años de resistencia indígena

Notas de campo desde el 30 aniversario del Congreso Nacional Indígena — y mi primer vistazo al interior de un edificio gubernamental ocupado y transformado por un grupo de mujeres otomíes muy valientes.

Mi reciente viaje a la Ciudad de México en un autobús lleno de representantes indígenas de distintas partes de Jalisco fue casi tan revelador como el encuentro mismo.

Wixárika, cora, nayeri, tepehuano, nahua — y luego estaba yo, hasta donde pude darme cuenta, la única teiwari, la palabra wixárika para referirse a una persona no indígena, una forastera.

Viajamos toda la noche rumbo a la Ciudad de México, 11 horas en un autobús que avanzaba cada vez más despacio debido a varios accidentes en el camino, hasta quedar completamente detenido en más de una ocasión. A mi lado, Aukwe Mijarez — Sofía por su nombre en español, vocera y coordinadora de comunicación del Consejo Regional Wixárika por la Defensa de Wirikuta y los Lugares Sagrados — se delineaba cuidadosamente los ojos bajo la tenue luz mientras yo escribía en mi cuaderno.

Cuando finalmente llegamos, alrededor de las 9 de la mañana, a la Casa de los Pueblos y Comunidades Indígenas “Samir Flores Soberanes”, yo estaba agotada y sabía solamente que había llegado al encuentro por el 30 aniversario del Congreso Nacional Indígena.

Todavía no tenía idea de cuánta historia contenía aquel edificio — ni de cuánta historia nos estaría esperando cuando volviéramos a subir al autobús para regresar a casa.

De mi cuaderno, 10-11-12 de octubre de 2026

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO, 10 de octubre — Ha sido una noche larga: 11 horas a bordo de un autobús lleno de wixaritari y nahuas y nayeris y tepehuanos y coras y quién sabe quién más. Varios accidentes en el camino nos hicieron avanzar a vuelta de rueda y después quedar completamente parados varias veces. Finalmente llegamos alrededor de las 9 a la Casa de los Pueblos y Comunidades Indígenas “Samir Flores Soberanes”, antes instalaciones del INPI, la dependencia gubernamental encargada de atender a las comunidades indígenas.

Aquí hay una historia, pero apenas estoy empezando a vislumbrarla.

En una de esas sorpresas de “solo en México”, me entero de que una de las cosas que se celebran aquí es el sexto aniversario de la “Toma del INPI”: la ocupación pacífica de este edificio de cinco pisos por mujeres otomíes desplazadas de Querétaro que llevaban años viviendo en condiciones de extrema pobreza y que finalmente se organizaron para sacar a los funcionarios gubernamentales de sus oficinas, ocupar el edificio y convertirlo en vivienda para familias indígenas sin hogar, centro comunitario, espacio de encuentro y — lo más sorprendente de todo — uno de los archivos más importantes de arte indígena del país.

Las paredes están cubiertas de carteles dramáticos y coloridos que ilustran momentos icónicos de la también colorida historia del movimiento, en la que los zapatistas ocupan un lugar destacado.

Después del registro nos llevaron al comedor, antes un estacionamiento para empleados y ahora decorado con murales coloridos y desafiantes (“Migrar no es un delito; discriminar sí”, por ejemplo), del que salían aromas capaces de abrirle el apetito a cualquiera. Mujeres con vistosos cuellos bordados y plisados servían un desayuno abundante y delicioso. Más tarde descubriría que eran las mismas mujeres otomíes que habían tomado este edificio, creado este espacio y organizado toda la logística para recibir a casi mil personas durante los siguientes tres días.

Yo me senté al lado de Aukwe Mijarez, o Sofía por su nombre en español, quien se estaba delineando los ojos en el asiento junto a mí mientras escribía. Vocera y coordinadora de comunicación del Consejo Regional Wixárika por la Defensa de Wirikuta y los Lugares Sagrados, por momentos estaba seria y concentrada; después, finalmente relajada, pudimos tener buenas conversaciones y reírnos a carcajadas durante una noche que siempre atesoraré.

“¡Zapata vive! ¡La lucha sigue!”, comienza a corear la multitud.

Emiliano Zapata, el héroe revolucionario indígena a quien se atribuye la frase “Es mejor morir de pie que vivir de rodillas”, definitivamente vive en este lugar. Y la lucha claramente continúa, de mil maneras distintas.

Aukwe se levanta para ocupar su lugar al frente, junto a una veintena de delegados, cada uno representante de alguno de los 68 pueblos indígenas de México. Marichuy toma el micrófono y las consignas se convierten en una ovación.

María de Jesús Patricio Martínez es la “Vocera”, como la nombró la organización hace años y como aparece retratada en el premiado documental del mismo nombre. Mejor conocida como Marichuy, Patricio Martínez es sobre todo conocida por haberse convertido en la primera mujer indígena en buscar la Presidencia de México.

La inauguración fue profundamente inspiradora, bajo una carpa instalada frente al edificio, lo suficientemente grande para albergar a las más de 600 personas que habían llegado de 22 estados, además de España, Italia, Grecia, Guatemala, Estados Unidos, Colombia, Argentina y Brasil, para participar en este encuentro por el 30 aniversario.

Una de las maestras de ceremonia era una extraordinaria joven vestida con indumentaria otomí, Anselma Margarito, quien tenía apenas 18 años cuando ella, su familia y otros miembros de su comunidad tomaron el edificio del INPI. (Entrevista por venir).

He contado los detalles de este encuentro enormemente inspirador en esta historia para Mexico News Daily — traducida y compartida en The Esperanza Project con su permiso — y próximamente contaré la historia de la toma del edificio gubernamental.

Para la tarde del último día, el encuentro había adquirido un peso que ninguno de nosotros podía haber previsto.

Llegó la noticia de que Carlos Chávez Reyes — uno de los fundadores del CNI, pionero del movimiento por los derechos indígenas en México y mi amigo y mentor de muchos años — había partido de esta Tierra.

Cuando anunciaron su nombre desde el escenario, cientos de personas se pusieron de pie y le ofrecieron un minuto entero de aplausos atronadores.

Carlos nunca fue un hombre que buscara los reflectores. Gran parte de su trabajo ocurría silenciosamente, detrás de escena: asesorando comunidades, ayudando a recuperar tierras indígenas, defendiendo territorios sagrados, construyendo alianzas, estando presente una y otra vez durante décadas. Había acompañado a muchas de las personas reunidas allí — y a muchas de sus luchas — durante buena parte de su vida adulta.

Entonces terminaron los discursos. Los delegados llenaron sus platos una última vez, recogieron sus cosas y volvieron a subir al autobús.

Esta vez no íbamos simplemente de regreso a casa.

Viajamos toda la noche rumbo a Tonalá y llegamos a la funeraria alrededor de las 4 de la mañana. Unos 40 delegados indígenas descendieron del autobús con su vestimenta tradicional, ojerosos y exhaustos después de tres días de reuniones y otro largo viaje nocturno.

Muchos lloraban en silencio mientras entrábamos juntos al recinto donde Carlos — amigo, consejero, compañero y defensor de tantos — yacía imposiblemente inmóvil.

Apenas unas horas antes, esas mismas personas habían estado debatiendo cómo llevar al CNI hacia una nueva generación.

Ahora habían llegado para acompañar a uno de los hombres que había ayudado a hacerlo nacer.

No puedo imaginar un homenaje más apropiado para Carlos Chávez que aquel autobús llegando antes del amanecer: wixaritari, nahuas, nayeris, tepehuanos y coras que venían directamente del 30 aniversario del Congreso Nacional Indígena para estar a su lado una última vez.

El viaje había comenzado con todos nosotros rumbo a un encuentro sobre resistencia, memoria y aquello que debe llevarse hacia adelante.

Terminó con la expresión más clara de esas mismas cosas que yo hubiera podido imaginar.

“Don Chuy,” as Carlos fondly referred to Jesús Lara Chivarra, Yuka+ye by his Wixárika name, was a compadre and a companion in the struggle for the sacred sites and the territories of the Wixarika people. Jesús was one of the most important people Carlos introduced me to. A former schoolteacher educated in the state university at Tepic, he had risen in the ranks, becoming a Wixárika authority and then an intertribal and international ambassador for his people.

I was invited to accompany Jesus in the delegations of Wixarika leaders to Cancun for COP 16, just weeks after it was learned that the Canadian mining giant First Majestic Silver had purchased mining concessions in Real de Catorce and was preparing to open a silver mine in that profoundly sacred place. Jesús, together with Rodolfo Cosio and Antonio “El Cuatazo” Carrillo, had come to find common ground and give voice to the struggle, which had only just commenced, and I was their translator. I still have the photo of Jesús being interviewed by Democracy Now!, transmitting to the world the urgency of the situation.

We traveled together to Vancouver, Canada, as well, to join the international protest movement against the out of control mining industry, and with hundreds marching behind us, went to the golden doors of the First Majestic Silver Corp. and demanded entry. Carlos was behind the scenes in both of these journeys, helping to organize the delegations and helping find the resources to pay for them. And it was Carlos who invited me, the newly appointed director of communications for the newly formed Wirikuta Defense Front, to accompany the two delegations.

My footage of these journeys made their way into the internationally acclaimed film, “Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians,” documenting the struggle and featuring Carlos as an interviewee and guide. Eventually, with the unrelenting international pressure that reached the level of the United Nations and the Mexican Supreme Court, an amparo, or restraining order, stopped the mine — at least temporarily. Until now, 14 years later, the mine remains on hold.

Four years after the peak of the struggle, Jesús made his way to the stars. It’s not clear what took him down but it is believed to be linked to an accident that occurred before he slipped away. He came to me in the days and months afterwards in the form of a hummingbird, and he has become a form of spirit guide for me.

The morning after Carlos’ funeral, when I saw those two hummingbirds together in Tunuary’s garden, I felt certain that my two old friends had found each other again. There they were, companions in the defense of life, reunited in the purple morning glories. It was a fleeting encounter, but one that filled me with wonder and consolation.

In the days since, Carlos’ family and friends have been gathering each evening for the novenario, accompanying him with the traditional Catholic rosary. After the recitation of the rosary, the neighbors leave and the five brothers and their families take their place around the altar. There they are carrying out a series of prayers rooted in the ancient Wixárika understanding of the world and its sacred places. They are carrying forward the path their father helped forge, accompanying him on his spiritual journey even as they find their own way. We are here, they remind him. We continue. We pray. We walk.

It is a journey that began long before any of us were born, and one that continues beyond this life.

I find myself thinking of those two hummingbirds, and of all the journeys Carlos and Jesús shared in this world. Wherever their paths may lead now, I like to imagine them together again, finding their way among the stars—and still guiding those of us who carry on their work here on Earth.

Parte 2: Dos colibríes en el jardín

Carlos Chávez, Yuka+ye y el reencuentro de dos viejos compañeros de camino

13 de octubre, TONALÁ. — Desperté en la cama de Ameyal, nieto de Carlos e hijo de Tunuary, y descorrí la cortina para mirar hacia el jardín. Lo primero que vi fue un colibrí revoloteando sobre una enredadera de campanillas moradas que cubría la barda del fondo. Carlos, pensé. Entonces, mientras lo observaba, apareció un segundo colibrí que se acercó velozmente al primero. Parecieron intercambiar unas palabras y luego salieron volando juntos. Don Chuy, pensé.

“Don Chuy”, como Carlos llamaba cariñosamente a Jesús Lara Chivarra, Yuka+ye por su nombre wixárika, era su compadre y compañero de lucha por los sitios sagrados y los territorios del pueblo wixárika. Jesús fue una de las personas más importantes que Carlos me presentó. Antiguo maestro de escuela, formado en la universidad estatal de Tepic, había ido asumiendo responsabilidades cada vez mayores, hasta convertirse en autoridad wixárika y posteriormente en embajador de su pueblo ante otras comunidades indígenas y en el ámbito internacional.

Fui invitada a acompañar a Jesús como parte de las delegaciones de líderes wixaritari que viajaron a Cancún para la COP16, apenas unas semanas después de que se diera a conocer que el gigante minero canadiense First Majestic Silver había adquirido concesiones mineras en Real de Catorce y se preparaba para abrir una mina de plata en aquel territorio profundamente sagrado.

Jesús, junto con Rodolfo Candelario y Antonio “El Cuatazo” Carrillo, había llegado para tender puentes, encontrar puntos en común y dar voz a una lucha que apenas comenzaba. Yo era su intérprete. Todavía conservo la fotografía de Jesús siendo entrevistado por Democracy Now!, transmitiendo al mundo la urgencia de la situación.

También viajamos juntos a Vancouver, Canadá, para sumarnos al movimiento internacional de protesta contra los abusos de la industria minera. Con cientos de manifestantes marchando detrás de nosotros, llegamos hasta las puertas doradas de la sede de First Majestic Silver Corp. y exigimos que nos dejaran entrar.

Carlos estuvo detrás de ambas travesías, ayudando a organizar las delegaciones y a conseguir los recursos necesarios para financiarlas. Y fue él quien me invitó, como recién nombrada directora de comunicación del también recién creado Frente en Defensa de Wirikuta, a acompañar a las dos delegaciones.

Las imágenes que grabé durante estos viajes terminaron formando parte del documental de reconocimiento internacional Huicholes: Los últimos guardianes del peyote, que retrata esta lucha y presenta a Carlos como entrevistado y guía. Finalmente, gracias a la incansable presión internacional, que llegó hasta las Naciones Unidas y la Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación, un amparo logró detener el proyecto minero, al menos temporalmente. Hasta hoy, 14 años después, la mina sigue detenida.

Cuatro años después del momento más intenso de aquella lucha, Jesús emprendió su camino hacia las estrellas. No está claro qué provocó su muerte, pero se cree que estuvo relacionada con un accidente que sufrió antes de partir. En los días y meses posteriores, Jesús comenzó a visitarme en forma de colibrí, y desde entonces ha permanecido conmigo como una especie de guía espiritual.

La mañana siguiente al funeral de Carlos, cuando vi a aquellos dos colibríes juntos en el jardín de Tunuary, sentí la certeza de que mis dos viejos amigos se habían reencontrado. Ahí estaban, compañeros en la defensa de la vida, reunidos entre las campanillas moradas. Fue un encuentro fugaz, pero me llenó de asombro y consuelo.

En los días transcurridos desde entonces, la familia y los amigos de Carlos se han reunido cada noche para el novenario, acompañándolo con el tradicional rosario católico, seguido de rezos arraigados en la antigua cosmovisión wixárika y su geografía sagrada. Sus cinco hijos están dando continuidad al camino que su padre ayudó a forjar, acompañándolo en su travesía espiritual mientras encuentran su propio rumbo. Aquí estamos, le recuerdan. Seguimos. Rezamos. Caminamos.

Es un camino que comenzó mucho antes de que cualquiera de nosotros naciera, y que continúa más allá de esta vida.

Vuelvo a pensar en aquellos dos colibríes y en todos los caminos que Carlos y Jesús recorrieron juntos en este mundo. Adondequiera que los lleven ahora sus pasos, me gusta imaginarlos reunidos una vez más, encontrando su camino entre las estrellas y siguiendo, desde el más allá, guiando a quienes continuamos su lucha aquí en la Tierra.

The loss of a dear friend, a mentor, guide, brother and father to me and to countless others, has left me devastated this week. Between tears and time spent with the family, I’ve been writing and remembering, and while I feel it is only a beginning, and completely inadequate as a tribute to this unique and brilliant soul, I will share some of it here.

With the reflection for each of you that if there is someone you truly love and admire, someone you’ve been meaning to spend time with but have been busy, put aside the busyness. There is nothing more important. I will regret not taking advantage of the opportunity to spend more time with Carlos Chávez until my final days.

Part 1: The Point of the Arrow

Oct. 12, 2026 - Another giant has left us. A tireless fighter for justice for Indigenous people, and yet a natural healer by training… a poet, a scholar, a lover of life and of the culture and of his family, a wise elder and kaiwitero, singer of sacred song, dreamer and walker of the path.

Carlos Chávez took me to the Wixarika territories for the first time in February of 2010, in a journey that was to imprint itself on my very soul. It was that journey that led me back to Guadalajara and to the offices of AJAGI, the Jalisco Association in Support of Indigenous People, after traversing the Americas all the way down to Argentina, when the Wixarika people put out a call to the world for support in defending their most sacred site.

I will never forget riding through the night at his side in the white Toyota pickup he’d outfitted with a camper and a set of benches along the three sides of the bed so that he could take his whole team up into the sierra or a whole truckload of wixas back to the city.

He told me so many things as we rode through that night, of the magical and deeply spiritual world of the Wixarika people that they labor night and day to keep alive, of the Blue Deer who was their elder brother and spiritual guide, of the deep and abiding connection to the land that led them at times into fierce and immovable resistance, as had recently occurred in Santa Catarina, where 800 people had camped atop a highway construction site in the middle of their mountains for months, eventually halting it… and he told me of the fight to recover 10,000 hectares from the invading mestizos in Bancos de San Hipólito, a fight he helped to lead and win. It was just one one of a number of legal battles that ended up reclaiming through the court system tens of thousands of hectares of stolen lands.

He told me of the profound cosmovision of the Wixarika mara’akate who could walk among the spirits and heal spiritual illnesses that were much deeper than the physical ones.

He was a big bear of a man with a head full of curly tousled silver hair, an easy laugh and an endlessly curious way about him. He could remember the name and personal details of nearly everyone he had encountered, it seemed, along the 56 years of his life at the time I met him.

I remember long journeys to Wirikuta, to Real de Catorce and on to the Cerro Quemado, Birthplace of the Sun, riding horseback with him and Maude Barlow of the Council of Canadians, serving as their translator; the nights we slept on the floor at the Agustin Pro Human Rights Center in Mexico City, interminable meetings and discussions that would last through the night over strategy and tactics in the fight to defend Wirikuta. He was a master of strategy and he was tireless, forging ahead long after others had collapsed around him, and he was ready to sacrifice his life if necessary — and I watched as many others lined up beside him, ready to do the same.

And he very nearly did, more than once. His life had been threatened repeatedly and eventually he had been forced to flee and take his whole family into hiding after one of his five sons was kidnapped.

But that had been another era, long before I met him. When I met him, another chapter was about to unfold. And that was the era of the Wirikuta Defense Front.

I was in El Salvador when I first heard the news. It seemed impossible, inconceivable, but there it was: it had been learned that Real de Catorce, gateway to the Cerro del Quemado, Birthplace of the Sun, was in the sights of a Canadian mining company that had bought the concessions allowing them to open an enormous silver mine right next to the tiny town. Real de Catorce, for those who don’t know it, is a colonial architectural jewel that besides being the launching point for pilgrims making their way up to the sacred mountain or down to the holy desert, had become an international destination for a certain kind of tourist.

I thought of the families I had met in Santa Catarina, ready to give up all else, to suffer and if necessary, to die, to stop a road from going through a much smaller and less significant sacred site. I grieved the impact I knew this would have on those people and on all the Wixarika communities.

I was in Colombia when the convocatoria was published, a resounding call by the Wixarika communities to the international community, a call for help to protect the sacred desert. It was called an existential threat, this destruction of their most holy altar of prayer, the source of the sacred cactus that gave them their spiritual guidance, and their entrance to a parallel universe, a place inhabited by the essences of life and the spirits of their ancestors.

“Destroying the Sacred is the Strategy,” wrote Carlos’ twin sons, Tunuary and Cristian, who published an article about the travesty in La Jornada. It was then that I knew I had to come.

I ended my yearlong pilgrimages throughout the Americas at the Consejo de Visiones in Chalmita, where I connected with the high-level activists of the Consejo, a collective of collectives whose most visible leader was the late Coyote Alberto Ruz. The pending destruction of Wirikuta was on everyone’s minds. “We have to call Carlos Chávez,” I said. “He will know what to do.”

And in fact he was already doing it. I put him on speaker phone, and his familiar friendly voice came over the line into the green tent-filled valley of Nierika, where he told us of the formation of the Wirikuta Defense Front.

The Consejo ended up signing on, issuing a proclamation against the proposed mine and forming its own autonomous arm of the defense front, the Mesa de Arte y Cultura, and together we became a force to be reckoned with. After the Consejo I headed to the AJAGI headquarters in Tonalá and signed on as the Wirikuta Defense Front’s communications director, a position for which I was spectacularly unsuited but which I threw my whole self into, and it was an initiation of sorts. There I had a front-row seat to the saga that was to unfold for the next two years.

The fight for Wirikuta rallied tens of thousands throughout Mexico and the world, organizing mobilizations that filled the streets of Mexico City, and a music festival that filled the massive Foro Sol with the country’s most celebrated artists and some 60,000 fans. It included a historic mass pilgrimage of Wixarika people and allies to the peak of the Cerro Quemado, where guidance was sought from the deities themselves in this existential struggle.

Carlos was there throughout, always with the Wixarika leaders at the front — the point of the arrow, as he called them — but always a few paces behind, ready to intervene, their secret weapon in the world of international law and politics.

I was at the 30th Anniversary of the National Indigenous Congress in Mexico City when I got the news. Carlos had been an active and prominent member of the organization, inspired by the Zapatista uprising of 1994, since its foundations, and had been integrally involved in many of the proceedings.

I was devastated — as were many. When the master of ceremonies announced his passing, he called for a full minute of applause. The thunderous applause of 600 or 700 people ensued, and there were tears on my face when it finally died away.

We have lost a giant.

La pérdida de un querido amigo, mentor, guía, hermano y figura paterna para mí y para incontables personas más me ha dejado devastada esta semana. Entre lágrimas y momentos compartidos con su familia, he estado escribiendo y recordando. Y aunque siento que esto es apenas un comienzo, y un homenaje completamente insuficiente para esta alma única y brillante, quiero compartir aquí algunas de esas reflexiones.

Y dejarles también una invitación urgente: si hay alguien a quien aman y admiran profundamente, alguien con quien llevan tiempo queriendo convivir, pero las ocupaciones no se lo han permitido, dejen de lado esas ocupaciones. No hay nada más importante. Hasta el último de mis días lamentaré no haber aprovechado la oportunidad de pasar más tiempo con Carlos Chávez.

Parte 1: La punta de la flecha

12 de octubre de 2026 — Otro gigante nos ha dejado. Un luchador incansable por la justicia para los pueblos indígenas y, al mismo tiempo, un sanador de formación… poeta, estudioso, amante de la vida, de la cultura y de su familia, un anciano sabio y kawitero, cantor de cantos sagrados, soñador y caminante del camino.

Carlos Chávez me llevó por primera vez a los territorios wixaritari en febrero de 2010, en un viaje que habría de dejar una huella imborrable en lo más profundo de mi alma. Fue aquel viaje el que me llevó de regreso a Guadalajara y a las oficinas de AJAGI, la Asociación Jalisciense de Apoyo a Grupos Indígenas, después de recorrer las Américas hasta llegar a Argentina, cuando el pueblo wixárika lanzó un llamado al mundo para pedir apoyo en la defensa de su sitio más sagrado.

Nunca olvidaré aquella noche viajando a su lado en la camioneta Toyota blanca a la que había instalado una camper y unas bancas a lo largo de los tres lados de la caja, para poder llevar a todo su equipo a la sierra o traer a toda una camionada de wixaritari de regreso a la ciudad.

Me contó tantas cosas mientras avanzábamos por la noche: del mundo mágico y profundamente espiritual del pueblo wixárika, que sus integrantes se esfuerzan día y noche por mantener vivo; del Venado Azul, su hermano mayor y guía espiritual; de la profunda e inquebrantable conexión con la tierra que los llevaba en ocasiones a una resistencia feroz e inamovible, como había ocurrido poco antes en Santa Catarina, donde 800 personas habían acampado durante meses sobre las obras de construcción de una carretera en medio de sus montañas, hasta lograr detenerla…

Y me habló de la lucha por recuperar 10,000 hectáreas de tierras ocupadas por mestizos invasores en Bancos de San Hipólito, una batalla que él ayudó a encabezar y ganar. Fue apenas una de varias batallas legales que lograron recuperar, mediante los tribunales, decenas de miles de hectáreas de tierras despojadas.

Me habló de la profunda cosmovisión de los mara’akate wixaritari, capaces de caminar entre los espíritus y sanar enfermedades espirituales mucho más profundas que las físicas.

Era un hombre corpulento, como un gran oso, con una abundante cabellera plateada, rizada y alborotada, una risa fácil y una curiosidad inagotable. Parecía recordar el nombre y los detalles personales de prácticamente todas las personas que había conocido a lo largo de sus 56 años de vida cuando lo conocí.

Recuerdo los largos viajes a Wirikuta, a Real de Catorce y de ahí al Cerro Quemado, Lugar del Nacimiento del Sol, cabalgando junto a él y a Maude Barlow, del Consejo de los Canadienses, mientras yo hacía de intérprete; las noches que dormimos en el suelo del Centro de Derechos Humanos Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, en la Ciudad de México; las interminables reuniones y discusiones que se prolongaban hasta la madrugada sobre estrategias y tácticas para la defensa de Wirikuta.

Era un maestro de la estrategia y era incansable. Seguía adelante mucho después de que los demás habían caído rendidos a su alrededor, y estaba dispuesto a sacrificar su vida si era necesario. Y vi cómo muchos otros se colocaban a su lado, dispuestos a hacer lo mismo.

Y estuvo muy cerca de hacerlo, más de una vez. Su vida había sido amenazada repetidamente y, finalmente, se vio obligado a huir y llevar a toda su familia a esconderse después de que secuestraron a su hijo.

Pero aquella había sido otra época, mucho antes de que yo lo conociera. Cuando nos encontramos, estaba por comenzar otro capítulo. Era la época del Frente en Defensa de Wirikuta.

Yo estaba en El Salvador cuando escuché la noticia por primera vez. Parecía imposible, inconcebible, pero ahí estaba: se había sabido que Real de Catorce, puerta de entrada al Cerro del Quemado, Lugar del Nacimiento del Sol, estaba en la mira de una empresa minera canadiense que había adquirido las concesiones que le permitirían abrir una enorme mina de plata junto al pequeño pueblo.

Real de Catorce, para quienes no lo conocen, es una joya de la arquitectura colonial que, además de ser el punto de partida de los peregrinos que ascienden a la montaña sagrada o descienden al desierto sagrado, se había convertido en un destino internacional para cierto tipo de turismo.

Pensé en las familias que había conocido en Santa Catarina, dispuestas a renunciar a todo lo demás, a sufrir y, de ser necesario, a morir para impedir que una carretera atravesara un sitio sagrado mucho más pequeño y de menor importancia. Me dolía imaginar el impacto que aquello tendría sobre esas personas y sobre todas las comunidades wixaritari.

Yo estaba en Colombia cuando se publicó la convocatoria, un llamado contundente de las comunidades wixaritari a la comunidad internacional para pedir ayuda en la protección del desierto sagrado. La destrucción de su altar de oración más sagrado, la fuente del cactus sagrado que les proporcionaba orientación espiritual y su puerta de entrada a un universo paralelo, un lugar habitado por las esencias de la vida y los espíritus de sus antepasados, fue considerada una amenaza existencial.

«Destruir lo sagrado es la estrategia», escribieron los hijos gemelos de Carlos, Tunuary y Cristian, en un artículo publicado en La Jornada sobre aquella atrocidad. Fue entonces cuando supe que tenía que regresar.

Terminé mi peregrinaje de un año por las Américas en el Consejo de Visiones, en Chalmita, donde me encontré con destacados activistas del Consejo, un colectivo de colectivos cuyo líder más visible era el fallecido Coyote Alberto Ruz. La inminente destrucción de Wirikuta estaba en la mente de todos.

—Tenemos que llamar a Carlos Chávez —dije—. Él sabrá qué hacer.

Y, de hecho, ya lo estaba haciendo. Lo puse en altavoz, y su voz familiar y amistosa resonó en el verde valle de Nierika, lleno de casas de campaña, mientras nos hablaba de la formación del Frente en Defensa de Wirikuta.

El Consejo terminó sumándose, emitiendo un pronunciamiento contra la mina propuesta y formando su propio brazo autónomo del Frente, la Mesa de Arte y Cultura. Juntos nos convertimos en una fuerza capaz de hacerse escuchar. Después del Consejo me dirigí a las oficinas de AJAGI en Tonalá y me incorporé como directora de comunicación del Frente en Defensa de Wirikuta, un puesto para el que estaba espectacularmente poco preparada, pero al que me entregué en cuerpo y alma. Fue una especie de iniciación. Desde allí tuve un asiento de primera fila para presenciar la historia que se desarrollaría durante los dos años siguientes.

La lucha por Wirikuta movilizó a decenas de miles de personas en México y el mundo, organizando manifestaciones que llenaron las calles de la Ciudad de México y un festival musical que abarrotó el enorme Foro Sol con los artistas más reconocidos del país y unos 60,000 asistentes. Incluyó una peregrinación masiva histórica de wixaritari y aliados a la cima del Cerro Quemado, donde se buscó la orientación de las deidades mismas en aquella lucha existencial.

Carlos estuvo presente durante todo ese tiempo, siempre con los líderes wixaritari al frente —la punta de la flecha, como él los llamaba—, pero siempre unos pasos detrás, listo para intervenir, su arma secreta en el mundo del derecho internacional y la política.

Me encontraba en la celebración del 30 aniversario del Congreso Nacional Indígena, en la Ciudad de México, cuando recibí la noticia. Carlos había sido un integrante activo y destacado de la organización, inspirada por el levantamiento zapatista de 1994, desde su fundación, y había participado de manera fundamental en muchos de sus procesos.

Quedé devastada, como tantas otras personas. Cuando el maestro de ceremonias anunció su fallecimiento, pidió un minuto entero de aplausos. Entonces estalló una ovación ensordecedora de 600 o 700 personas, y las lágrimas corrían por mi rostro cuando finalmente se apagó.

Hemos perdido a un gigante.

October 2… never forget.

(Español abajo) Today is October 2, a date of profound significance in Mexico.

We are living in times when Tlatelolco 1968 no longer feels safely consigned to history. Questions of democracy, repression, state power, memory, resistance and the responsibility of ordinary people to defend what is sacred — even in the face of violence — are again very much alive.

On this day in 1968, hundreds of young people — most of them students — were gunned down in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas at Tlatelolco as they gathered in a movement demanding freedom, justice and democratic change. The government initially acknowledged only a tiny fraction of the dead; independent and eyewitness estimates have placed the toll at 300 to 400 or more. The true number has never been established.

Their blood sanctified that ground. And their sacrifice became part of a much longer struggle so that democracy in Mexico would not die.

Two years ago, I had the privilege of traveling to the house of Regina, the young woman at the heart of Antonio Velasco Piña’s extraordinary book Regina: 2 de Octubre Nunca Se Olvide — a temple of sorts to a young woman who is part historical figure, part spiritual archetype, who became emblematic of that sacrifice, and of a magical, spiritual and deeply revolutionary current running through Mexican history.

That journey took me into a world I had heard about for years through a beloved friend and teacher, the late and great Coyote Alberto Ruz, but had never entered myself.

This year I was unable to accompany my dear friend and elder sister Patricia Ríos Duggan, one of the three keepers who had inherited the bastón of Regina from Alberto.

As I write this, Paty and her counterparts are leading pilgrims in Tlatelolco, where they will leave a floral offering at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas — a place made sacred, in their understanding, by the blood shed there. Their pilgrimage this year has followed the sacred routes from Teotihuacán and Chapultepec to the Basilica of Guadalupe, Aldea de los Reyes and, finally, Tlatelolco.

I find myself thinking about Antonio Velasco Piña today, and about the unusual body of work he left behind: a profoundly Mexican weaving together of history, Indigenous memory, spirituality and political action. We are living through a time when the events of 1968 can feel less remote than they once did.. Remembering Tlatelolco, like remembering Kent State, is not simply an act of looking backward. It is a way of asking what its lessons require of us now.

So today I’m sharing again the story I wrote in 2024, when I finally followed Alberto’s long-ago instruction to me — “Look for Paty Ríos” — and traveled with her to Regina’s house.

I hope next year to walk this road with Paty again, and to go deeper into the mysteries of Regina, Antonio Velasco Piña and the living tradition surrounding October 2.

Tlatelolco no está tan lejos

Una peregrinación por la memoria, la resistencia y el legado sagrado del 2 de Octubre

2 de Octubre no se olvida.

Hoy es 2 de octubre, una fecha de profundo significado en México.

Vivimos tiempos en los que Tlatelolco 1968 ya no parece algo que podamos relegar tranquilamente a la historia. Las preguntas sobre la democracia, la represión, el poder del Estado, la memoria, la resistencia y la responsabilidad de la gente común de defender lo sagrado —incluso frente a la violencia— vuelven a estar muy presentes.

Un día como hoy, en 1968, cientos de jóvenes —la mayoría estudiantes— fueron abatidos a tiros en la Plaza de las Tres Culturas de Tlatelolco, mientras participaban en un movimiento que exigía libertad, justicia y un cambio democrático. El gobierno reconoció inicialmente apenas una pequeña fracción de las muertes; estimaciones independientes y de testigos han situado el número entre 300 y 400 o más. La cifra real nunca se ha establecido.

Su sangre santificó ese lugar. Y su sacrificio pasó a formar parte de una lucha mucho más larga para que la democracia en México no muriera.

Hace dos años tuve el privilegio de viajar a la casa de Regina, la joven que ocupa el centro del extraordinario libro de Antonio Velasco Piña, Regina: 2 de Octubre Nunca Se Olvide: una especie de templo dedicado a una joven que es en parte figura histórica y en parte arquetipo espiritual, y que llegó a encarnar aquel sacrificio, así como una corriente mágica, espiritual y profundamente revolucionaria que atraviesa la historia de México.

Ese viaje me llevó a un mundo del que había oído hablar durante años por medio de mi querido amigo Coyote Alberto Ruz, pero al que yo misma nunca había entrado. Este año no pude acompañar a mi querida amiga y hermana mayor Patricia Ríos Duggan, una de las tres guardianas que heredaron de Alberto el bastón de Regina.

Mientras escribo esto, Paty y sus compañeros están guiando a los peregrinos en Tlatelolco, donde dejarán una ofrenda floral en la Plaza de las Tres Culturas—un lugar hecho sagrado, según su comprensión, por la sangre allí derramada. Este año, su peregrinación ha seguido rutas sagradas desde Teotihuacán y Chapultepec hasta la Basílica de Guadalupe, la Aldea de los Reyes y, finalmente, Tlatelolco.

Hoy pienso mucho en Antonio Velasco Piña y en la singular obra que dejó: un tejido profundamente mexicano de historia, memoria indígena, espiritualidad y acción política. Estamos viviendo un tiempo en el que los acontecimientos de 1968 pueden sentirse menos lejanos que antes. Recordar Tlatelolco, como recordar Kent State, no es simplemente un acto de mirar hacia atrás. Es una manera de preguntarnos qué nos exigen hoy sus lecciones.

Por eso hoy vuelvo a compartir la historia que escribí en 2024, cuando por fin seguí aquella vieja instrucción que Alberto me había dado años atrás —“Busca a Paty Ríos”— y viajé con ella a la casa de Regina.

Espero volver a recorrer este camino con Paty el próximo año y profundizar en los misterios de Regina, Antonio Velasco Piña y la tradición viva que rodea al 2 de octubre.

Soon I was squeezed into a car with a group of environmental facilitators, heading southeast toward Iztapalapa—the sprawling borough of 1.8 million people that receives a formidable share of Mexico City’s waste and has also become one of its most important centers of repair, reuse and recycling.

The occasion was the Forum on Inclusive Circular Economy, organized by my longtime friend Arnold Ricalde, an environmental activist I first came to know through the Vision Council. Now an adviser to Iztapalapa Mayor Aleida Alavez Ruiz, Arnold has spent the past two years helping the borough develop projects around composting, recycling, urban gardens and waste reduction.

We arrived early to the Centro Cultural Iztapalapa, and I watched the setup of the impressive sound system and audiovisual displays. People crowded the lobby, exchanging contacts, comparing projects and making their way to a packed auditorium. Government officials mingled with environmentalists, business representatives and some of the people who know Mexico’s waste stream best: the pepenadores, or grassroots recyclers, who make their living recovering what everyone else throws away.

Mexico has an estimated 400,000 pepenadores working in landfills and open-air dumps, according to the forum’s organizers, while more than 2 million people participate in the informal recycling economy. Workers throughout this informal economy often lack stable incomes, social security, protective equipment and legal recognition. Some live beside—or even on top of—the enormous mountains of waste from which they extract their livelihoods.

The person who brought that reality most forcefully into the room had traveled from Chile.

Soledad Mella is a grassroots recycler, president of Chile’s National Association of Recyclers and a leader in both the Latin American and international recyclers’ movements. Dynamic and utterly commanding, she stood before the audience rather than remaining seated on the stage.

“You’ll have to excuse me, but I like to speak standing up,” she began.

It was immediately clear why.

Soledad spoke with the authority of someone who has lived the struggle she was describing. She has carried her message from the streets and waste streams of Santiago to international climate conferences and United Nations negotiations. In Iztapalapa, she came with both encouragement and a warning.

“Living from garbage does not mean becoming part of the garbage,” she declared. “Recyclers must dignify and defend their work—and, above all, organize.”

Her visit came at a pivotal moment. Mexico’s new General Circular Economy Law formally recognizes grassroots recyclers and calls for their inclusion in the systems created to recover and reuse materials. Its implementing regulations, however, have yet to be published. Many of the decisions that will determine whether that promise becomes meaningful remain unresolved.

Will recyclers be registered without drowning in bureaucracy? Will they gain access to social security? Will they receive training, equipment and infrastructure? Will companies be required to purchase recovered materials directly from them? Will recycling finally be recognized and compensated as an environmental service—or will the people who built the industry be displaced once the industry becomes profitable?

Soledad had seen this struggle unfold in Chile. When that country adopted its extended producer responsibility law, she explained, grassroots recyclers were initially excluded. Only through organization and political pressure did they win a place within the system.

Recognition in the text of a law is not enough, she warned. Recyclers need the tools to compete: infrastructure, financing, social protections and payment for the service they provide—not merely whatever price the market happens to offer for cardboard, aluminum or plastic on a given day.

“Garbage and recycling constitute a business model,” she told the audience, “and powerful interests are eager to take control of it.”

Without a just transition, she added, “the sharks, the large companies, will eat us alive.”

Abel Balderas understood exactly what she meant. Balderas began working as a pepenador at age eight and now leads Mexico’s National Recyclers Movement. He spoke with pride about his family’s history in recycling and about the expertise that workers like him have accumulated over generations.

“Son ustedes quienes van a enseñar qué sí, qué no, cuál sí, cuál no,” he told the recyclers in the room. “Nosotros somos los expertos.”

“You are the ones who can teach what can be recycled and what cannot, which material works and which does not,” he told the recyclers in the room. “We are the experts.”

That expertise has rarely been treated as such. For generations, grassroots recyclers have quietly subsidized municipal waste systems, reducing the volume sent to dumps while recovering materials for industry. Yet because their labor is largely informal, their contribution often disappears from official accounts.

René Sánchez Galindo, the federal Environment Ministry’s director general of legal affairs, acknowledged the challenge of turning the new law into a workable system. Regulations will eventually be developed for individual products and materials, each with its own supply chains, markets and environmental consequences.

“We have to ensure that the measures are viable for everyone: industry, consumers and grassroots recyclers,” he said. “There must be what we call economic viability.”

Iztapalapa hopes to help shape that process—and to serve as a proving ground.

The borough collects roughly 2,200 tonnes of waste every day. When the current administration took office, only 2% to 3% was being separated into organic and inorganic waste, according to Alfonso González May, its director general of urban services. That figure has risen to 8%, with meaningful separation now occurring along 37 collection routes.

Eight percent may not sound impressive. González May insisted that its modesty was the point.

“Este 8% ha sido a pulso,” he said. The gain had been achieved little by little, through persistent work. His department, he added, did not want to offer the mayor spectacular figures disconnected from reality.

The borough has also expanded a once-weekly program collecting unwanted furniture, appliances and household debris into six weekly jornadas de triques. The idea is to keep these objects out of clandestine dumps while allowing recoverable materials and repairable items to reenter productive use.

Mexico City already converts used cooking oil into biofuel at a plant in Iztapalapa’s Central de Abasto. The borough is now expanding collection through public markets, government offices and eventually municipal collection crews, keeping the oil out of drains where it contributes to blockages and flooding.

Meanwhile, Iztapalapa’s sustainable development office has identified more than 500 local enterprises participating in some aspect of the circular economy: cellphone and appliance repair shops, cobblers, upholsterers, carpenters, compost producers and artisans transforming discarded clothing, cardboard, wood and plastic.

Through the Soldando Iztapalapa welding program, young people receive welding training while repairing broken school furniture. More than 10,000 desks have already been restored—10,000 objects kept out of the waste stream, while young people acquire useful skills and serve their communities.

The borough also operates a public recycling point outside the cultural center, neighborhood composting workshops and an ecocanje program that exchanges recyclable plastics for staple foods and vegetables grown in local greenhouses and community gardens. A new composting plant is planned to process organic waste using black soldier fly larvae.

These are small advances when measured against the scale of Mexico’s waste crisis. But they represent something often missing from grand environmental plans: experiments rooted in the daily realities of a place and its people.

After the presentations, the forum’s participants divided into five groups organized by material: PET, other plastics, paper and cardboard, metals and electronics. Recyclers sat alongside company representatives, academics, activists and officials to discuss social security, tax registration, training and direct purchasing agreements with industry.

The nearly impenetrable barriers to permits and formalization surfaced repeatedly. Still, most groups managed to identify common ground and propose possible routes forward.

The metals table was the notable exception.

It was facilitated by Adelita San Vicente, the legendary defender of Mexico’s native corn and seeds. She tried to move the discussion toward solutions, but auto industry representatives, the primary buyers of these materials, responded with objection after objection. They were insisting, among other things, on a zero percent tax rate. Eventually, even Adelita gave up.

“Tiburones,” she said afterward.

Sharks.

Soledad’s warning had found its illustration.

When the forum ended, a smaller group followed Arnold outside to a lot beside the cultural center. Not long ago, it had been an abandoned dumping ground covered in construction debris and trash. Arnold and his collaborators had hauled away the waste, brought in truckloads of compost and planted the space with native and medicinal species.

Now it was a lush garden.

Arnold walked us through the plants, recounting the slow transformation. Around us grew herbs, flowers and young native plants where rubble had once accumulated. The lemony fragrance of toronjil—lemon balm—rose into the afternoon air. As Arnold spoke, several people began gathering fragrant armfuls to carry home.

It was only one reclaimed lot in a borough of nearly 2 million people, and no one mistook it for a solution to Mexico City’s waste crisis.

But standing there, breathing in the scent of medicinal herbs growing from soil rebuilt with compost, it was possible to see the principle at the heart of the day’s discussions: what a society throws away can return with value.

That must include not only its discarded materials, but also the people whose knowledge and labor have kept those materials in circulation all along.

As Soledad and her movement say: “Reciclaje sin reciclador es basura.”

Reciclaje sin recicladores es basura: una crónica desde el corazón de Iztapalapa

Dos semanas después de mi último viaje a la Ciudad de México, volví a abordar un autobús nocturno rumbo a la megalópolis y llegué antes del amanecer. Un Uber me llevó por las calles a media luz hasta la casa de Laura Kuri, una figura de larga trayectoria en el movimiento ambiental de la ciudad, quien me recibió con café, un desayuno libanés y una ducha que me hacía mucha falta.

Poco después iba apretujada en un auto con un grupo de facilitadores ambientales, rumbo al sureste, hacia Iztapalapa: la extensa alcaldía de 1.8 millones de habitantes que recibe una enorme proporción de los residuos de la Ciudad de México y que también se ha convertido en uno de sus centros más importantes de reparación, reutilización y reciclaje.

El motivo era el Foro de Economía Circular Inclusiva, organizado por mi amigo de muchos años Arnold Ricalde, un activista ambiental a quien conocí a través del Consejo de Visiones. Ahora, como asesor de la alcaldesa de Iztapalapa, Aleida Alavez Ruiz, Arnold ha dedicado los últimos dos años a ayudar a la demarcación a desarrollar proyectos de compostaje, reciclaje, huertos urbanos y reducción de residuos.

Llegamos temprano al Centro Cultural Iztapalapa, y observé el montaje del impresionante sistema de sonido y los equipos audiovisuales. La gente llenaba el vestíbulo, intercambiando contactos, comparando proyectos y avanzando hacia un auditorio abarrotado. Funcionarios públicos se mezclaban con ambientalistas, representantes empresariales y algunas de las personas que mejor conocen el flujo de residuos de México: los pepenadores, o recicladores de base, que se ganan la vida recuperando lo que todos los demás desechan.

Se calcula que en México hay unos 400,000 pepenadores trabajando en rellenos sanitarios y tiraderos a cielo abierto, según los organizadores del foro, mientras más de 2 millones de personas participan en la economía informal del reciclaje. Quienes trabajan en esta economía suelen carecer de ingresos estables, seguridad social, equipo de protección y reconocimiento legal. Algunos viven junto a —o incluso encima de— las enormes montañas de residuos de las que extraen su sustento.

La persona que llevó esa realidad a la sala con mayor contundencia había viajado desde Chile.

Soledad Mella es recicladora de base, presidenta de la Asociación Nacional de Recicladores de Chile y dirigente de los movimientos latinoamericano e internacional de recicladores. Pequeña, dinámica y absolutamente imponente, se puso de pie frente al público en lugar de permanecer sentada en el escenario.

“Me van a disculpar, pero me gusta hablar parada”, comenzó.

De inmediato quedó claro por qué.

Mella habló con la autoridad de quien ha vivido la lucha que describía. Ha llevado su mensaje desde las calles y los circuitos de residuos de Santiago hasta conferencias internacionales sobre el clima y negociaciones de las Naciones Unidas. A Iztapalapa llegó con un mensaje de aliento, pero también con una advertencia.

“Ser reciclador de base y vivir de la basura no significa que nos transformemos en parte de la basura”, declaró. “Debemos dignificar, debemos defender, pero sobre todo debemos organizarnos”.

Su visita ocurrió en un momento decisivo. La nueva Ley General de Economía Circular de México reconoce formalmente a los recicladores de base y exige su inclusión en los sistemas creados para recuperar y reutilizar materiales. Sin embargo, su reglamento de aplicación aún no ha sido publicado. Muchas de las decisiones que determinarán si esa promesa se vuelve realidad siguen sin resolverse.

¿Podrán registrarse los recicladores sin ahogarse en la burocracia? ¿Tendrán acceso a la seguridad social? ¿Recibirán capacitación, equipo e infraestructura? ¿Se obligará a las empresas a comprarles directamente los materiales recuperados? ¿El reciclaje será finalmente reconocido y remunerado como un servicio ambiental, o las personas que construyeron esta industria serán desplazadas una vez que se vuelva rentable?

Mella había visto esta lucha desarrollarse en Chile. Cuando ese país adoptó su ley de responsabilidad extendida del productor, explicó, los recicladores de base quedaron excluidos inicialmente. Solo mediante la organización y la presión política consiguieron un lugar dentro del sistema.

No basta con que una ley los reconozca en el papel, advirtió. Los recicladores necesitan herramientas para competir: infraestructura, financiamiento, protección social y pago por el servicio que prestan, no solo lo que el mercado decida pagar en un momento dado por el cartón, el aluminio o el plástico.

“La basura y el reciclaje es un modelo de negocio”, dijo al público. “Y hay muchos interesados en tomar lo propio y quitarnos a nosotros de ese escenario”.

Sin una transición justa, agregó, “lamentablemente los tiburones, las grandes empresas, nos van a comer. Y nosotros no vamos a poder salir adelante”.

Abel Balderas entendía perfectamente lo que quería decir. Balderas comenzó a trabajar como pepenador a los ocho años y ahora encabeza el Movimiento Nacional de Recicladores de México. Habló con orgullo de la historia de su familia en el reciclaje y de los conocimientos que trabajadores como él han acumulado durante generaciones.

“Son ustedes quienes van a enseñar qué sí, qué no, cuál sí, cuál no”, dijo a los recicladores presentes. “Nosotros somos los expertos”.

Ese conocimiento rara vez ha sido tratado como tal. Durante generaciones, los recicladores de base han subsidiado silenciosamente los sistemas municipales de residuos, reduciendo el volumen enviado a los tiraderos mientras recuperan materiales para la industria. Sin embargo, debido a que su trabajo es en gran medida informal, su contribución suele desaparecer de las cuentas oficiales.

René Sánchez Galindo, director general jurídico de la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, reconoció el desafío de convertir la nueva ley en un sistema funcional. Con el tiempo se elaborarán reglamentos para productos y materiales específicos, cada uno con sus propias cadenas de suministro, mercados y consecuencias ambientales.

“Tenemos que analizar que las medidas sean viables para todos: para el sector industrial, para los consumidores y para los recicladores de base”, dijo. “Tiene que haber una, le llamamos nosotros, viabilidad económica”.

Iztapalapa espera ayudar a dar forma a ese proceso y convertirse en un laboratorio de pruebas.

La alcaldía recolecta alrededor de 2,200 toneladas de residuos cada día. Cuando la actual administración asumió el gobierno, apenas entre el 2% y el 3% se separaba en orgánicos e inorgánicos, según Alfonso González May, director general de Servicios Urbanos. Esa proporción ha aumentado al 8%, y ya se realiza una separación efectiva en 37 rutas de recolección.

El 8% quizá no parezca impresionante. González May insistió en que precisamente ahí radicaba su valor.

“Este 8% ha sido a pulso, con diversas estrategias”, dijo. Su dependencia, agregó, no quería presentar a la alcaldesa cifras espectaculares que no tuvieran nada que ver con la realidad.

La alcaldía también amplió un programa que recogía muebles, electrodomésticos y desechos domésticos una vez por semana hasta convertirlo en seis jornadas de triques semanales. La idea es evitar que estos objetos terminen en tiraderos clandestinos y permitir que los materiales recuperables y los artículos reparables vuelvan a tener un uso productivo.

La Ciudad de México ya convierte aceite de cocina usado en biocombustible en una planta ubicada en la Central de Abasto de Iztapalapa. Ahora, la alcaldía está ampliando la recolección mediante mercados públicos, oficinas gubernamentales y, con el tiempo, las cuadrillas municipales de recolección, para evitar que el aceite termine en el drenaje, donde contribuye a obstrucciones e inundaciones.

Mientras tanto, la Dirección General de Desarrollo Sustentable de Iztapalapa ha identificado más de 500 emprendimientos locales que participan en algún aspecto de la economía circular: talleres de reparación de celulares y electrodomésticos, zapateros, tapiceros, carpinteros, productores de composta y artesanos que transforman ropa, cartón, madera y plástico desechados.

Mediante el programa Soldando Iztapalapa, jóvenes reciben capacitación en soldadura mientras reparan mobiliario escolar dañado. Ya se han restaurado más de 10,000 pupitres: 10,000 objetos que no ingresaron al flujo de residuos, mientras los jóvenes adquieren habilidades útiles y prestan un servicio a sus comunidades.

La alcaldía también opera un punto público de reciclaje fuera del centro cultural, talleres comunitarios de compostaje y un programa de ecocanje que intercambia plásticos reciclables por productos de la canasta básica y verduras cultivadas en invernaderos y huertos comunitarios locales. Además, se proyecta una nueva planta de compostaje que procesará residuos orgánicos mediante larvas de mosca soldado negra.

Son avances pequeños frente a la magnitud de la crisis de residuos en México. Pero representan algo que suele faltar en los grandes planes ambientales: experimentos arraigados en la realidad cotidiana de un lugar y de su gente.

Después de las presentaciones, los participantes del foro se dividieron en cinco grupos organizados por material: PET, otros plásticos, papel y cartón, metales y electrónicos. Los recicladores se sentaron junto a representantes empresariales, académicos, activistas y funcionarios para hablar de seguridad social, incorporación al sistema tributario, capacitación y acuerdos de compra directa con la industria.

Las barreras casi infranqueables para obtener permisos y formalizarse surgieron una y otra vez. Aun así, la mayoría de los grupos logró encontrar puntos en común y proponer posibles caminos a seguir.

La mesa de metales fue la gran excepción.

La facilitó Adelita San Vicente, legendaria defensora del maíz nativo y de las semillas de México. Intentó encaminar la conversación hacia soluciones, pero los representantes de la industria automotriz —los principales compradores de esos materiales— respondieron con una objeción tras otra. Insistían, entre otras cosas, en una tasa impositiva del 0%. Finalmente, hasta Adelita se dio por vencida.

“Tiburones”, dijo después.

La advertencia de Mella había encontrado su ilustración.

Cuando terminó el foro, un grupo más pequeño siguió a Arnold hasta un terreno junto al centro cultural. No mucho tiempo atrás había sido un tiradero abandonado, cubierto de escombros y basura. Arnold y sus colaboradores habían retirado los residuos, llevado varios camiones de composta y sembrado el espacio con especies nativas y medicinales.

Ahora era un jardín exuberante.

Arnold nos guió entre las plantas mientras relataba la lenta transformación. A nuestro alrededor crecían hierbas, flores y plantas nativas jóvenes donde antes se acumulaban los escombros. El aroma cítrico del toronjil se elevaba en el aire de la tarde. Mientras Arnold hablaba, varias personas comenzaron a cortar brazadas de la fragante planta medicinal para llevárselas a casa.

Era apenas un terreno recuperado en una alcaldía de casi 2 millones de habitantes, y nadie lo confundía con una solución a la crisis de residuos de la Ciudad de México.

Pero de pie allí, respirando el aroma de las plantas medicinales que crecían en un suelo reconstruido con composta, era posible ver el principio que había estado en el centro de las conversaciones de aquel día: aquello que una sociedad desecha puede volver a tener valor.

Y eso debe incluir no solo los materiales descartados, sino también a las personas cuyo conocimiento y trabajo los han mantenido en circulación desde siempre.

Como dicen Mella y su movimiento: “Reciclaje sin reciclador es basura”.

Here Ana, a writer, community educator, and mother of two whose photo is now included on El Paso Most Wanted, explains why the #Borderlands16 activists do what they do. The deserts and hills of what is now called El Paso, Texas, which we recognize as the ancestral homelands of the Piro, Manso, Suma, Apache and the Tigua and Rarámuri peoples, and which have been built into what they are now on the backs of brown and black and immigrant bodies, have been fertile ground for violence and uprisings and hotbeds for revolution for as long as we can remember. It was from here that the Mexican Revolution was sparked and executed. It was here that the 1917 Bath Riots erupted. This is the nature of Chuco; as long as there is the sickness of oppression in these lands, there will always be resistance in these lands.

Today in this town on what is now the U.S. / Mexico border, we are witnessing another manifestation of this perpetual cycle of oppression and resistance in the exploitation of the lives of migrant families and the communities that have risen to meet it. We have witnessed a series of actions by Customs and Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents that egregiously violate the human rights of migrants and the laws meant to protect them.

I was present with my little girl, Arcoiris, during the March to Tornillo in June of 2018 just after the Tornillo tent city detention center went up. It was one of the highest turnouts I had ever seen for a local march; later it would be estimated that there may have been up to 2,000 people present that day. The crowd was speckled with celebrity politicians, from Robert O’Rourke and Veronica Escobar from El Paso to, I would learn later, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

At one point the crowd split to enormous applause and Joe Kennedy walked to the stage. Later I would write on watching O’Rourke and Kennedy speak, stating that it read a lot like a photo op for celebrity politicians riding the tragedy-porn coattails of real families who need to be seen and heard, not spoken for. Given O’Rourke’s reputation as a gentrification-friendly double talker amongst the same historical immigrant communities in El Paso that are known for their resistance, it was disconcerting to see him leading a crowd with the intention of defending migrant families along the border, though the presence of O’Rourke and other big-name politicians admittedly drew in a much-needed crowd.

In the wake of the announcement of the “zero tolerance” policy and the increased criminalization of migration, officials reportedly housed thousands of children who had been separated from their parents, as well as unaccompanied minors, at the Tornillo child detention camp over the course of several months. Reports also began to emerge that Customs and Border Protection agents were being stationed at the midpoints of bridges and turning away migrant families attempting to request asylum. Without access to ports of entry and nowhere to go, families were forced to remain in the streets of Ciudad Juárez.

On Dec. 8, 7-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquín died in El Paso while in Border Patrol custody. Then, on Christmas Eve, Felipe Gómez Alonzo, 8 years old, died in El Paso while in Border Patrol custody. That night we heard reports of hundreds of migrants dumped by officials at the Greyhound station in El Paso’s historic Duranguito neighborhood, where residents have led another battle on the streets of El Paso against the gentrification of historic immigrant communities.

Neighbors and extended communities mobilized to collect donations and provide meals and shelter for the families. This would not turn out to be an isolated incident; immigration authorities would continue to leave large groups of families numbering in the hundreds in the streets while the community came together to house, feed, transport, and support in the advocacy of a population experiencing human rights violations.

Then in March, migrant families were found to be caged in a large pen under the Paso del Norte International Port of Entry bridge in El Paso. Parents and children were said to be sleeping in the open air, on gravel, with only mylar blankets for bedding, behind razor wire and chain linked fencing.

When I awoke on the morning of March 31, the heavy overnight winds had broken a window in my home. The house was frigid; the thermometer read 40 degrees and as I checked in on reports from under the bridge, I realized that the public was being told that the families had been relocated, while those who I knew on the ground were reporting that the families had been moved to another location nearby, still exposed to the harsh cold but in a less visible spot.

In the wake of this atrocity, the families that had been held beneath the bridge began to pass through local shelters, including the pop-up where myself and other organizers set up twice a week to serve meals as Food Not Walls. I wasn’t there the night the families who had been caged under the bridge came through. I did hear the stories of my friends and fellow organizers about the horrific conditions they witnessed the guests in that night.

I sat with my dear sister in community, Claudia, in a friend’s house while she told me that as they arrived, they looked like people coming in from a war zone. They were covered in dust, bird poop, and their hair was matted and speckled with rubble. They couldn’t form a line, they only sat at the tables and stared, shellshocked, as volunteers mobilized into a type of triage mode.

One woman told Claudia that her child was sick while they were under the bridge and she asked for medical assistance but wasn’t seen until her child was projectile vomiting incessantly. A lot of the children were vomiting that night. She told me there were points where she thought the children weren’t eating because they were in shock, but then they would run to the toilet and she realized they couldn’t eat because they were so sick.

Claudia gave me a card with a picture of Jakelin Caal on it and told me that this it was to remind me of why we do what we do, and I thought about the way she died, sick in Customs and Border Patrol custody. These are the conditions that children are being subjected to in the United States, while they get sick and we lose them. Juan Ortiz and Cristy Velez, two friends and organizers with Food Not Walls, also shared photographs with me. Cristy handed me the pictures she had taken of the children’s hands, dusty, scraped and bruised from sleeping on the gravel beneath the bridge. Juan told me about a little girl he had documented whose expression had stunned him because she had so much shock in her face as she sat at a table that night.

This is why we do what we do.

I’ve often been in conversation with folks who do community organizing work around social justice issues, and this is what they mean when they say that protest is only 1% of the work. Most of the work is three-hour-long conference calls that end in tears, late-night strategizing and early-morning meetings. The work is collaborative calendars and cooking en masse from our homes and three more phone calls.

But I’m of the brand that understands that protest is also necessary to effect change in moments of particular strife in our communities, such as this moment in which we are witnessing migrant communities in El Paso being treated with a complete lack of humanity by United States immigration officials, government entities, and civilians alike. While these human rights violations are being allowed to continue without consequence, resistance to these actions has been met with heavy criminalization all along the borderland.

On the morning of Monday, April 15, 2019, myself and Elizabeth Vega self-surrendered to the El Paso Police Department after learning that warrants had been issued for our arrest in connection to a 15-minute protest at the Border Patrol Museum in El Paso in February; my charge was listed as criminal trespass. In the weeks leading up to the arrest, the El Paso Police Department held a press conference during which they announced that 16 members of the Tornillo: The Occupation coalition were being charged with state felonies and misdemeanors in connection with the protest, which was one of a series of actions staged over what was called the Revolutionary Love Weekend of Resistance.

A story went around on social media that police had surrounded my old house and tried to arrest the mother who lived there now, believing she was me. My photograph and misdemeanor charge would appear on El Paso’s 10 Most Wanted list, next to people wanted on charges like murder, for two weeks in a row.

Consider this, along with the fact that in the weeks following my arrest, reports emerged of vigilante militia members detaining migrant families, including children, at gunpoint at their camp in Sunland Park. They were said to have been camped out at the site for months, detaining people at gunpoint, and posting videos of migrant families on their knees while Border Patrol agents stood aside. The police were reported to have visited the site and asked the militia, who called themselves the United Constitutional Patriots, to leave the site by the week’s end, meaning that they had several days to stop trespassing. The group was evicted the following day and are said to have planned to relocate and continue operations, however.

If 15 minutes can land someone with a misdemeanor criminal trespass charge and a spot on El Paso’s Most Wanted for a non-violent action, it begs the question: why it is that a group of masked militia members holding children at gunpoint while illegally camped out for months isn’t as pressing a concern for authorities?

As members of this border community, it is our responsibility to witness, document, expose and stand against human rights abuses and the xenophobic oppressions that continue to plague the frontera lands of El Paso. We have a responsibility to the memory of these lands and to the descendants of the peoples whose lands we live on to fight for the dignity of this revolutionary place of desert and mountain and river that we call home.

In jail, I sat in a cell with a woman I’ll call Victoria. She didn’t know where she was, I learned as I spoke to her, and I won’t forget her face when I told her she was in a jail. She told me she hadn’t been fed since the day before. As we shared my chips, she showed me the scars on her head that she had shown to Border Patrol during her self-surrender.

She said she had been separated from her sister, who had also been a victim of a machete attack in Guatemala, and her sister’s children, and brought here alone. “Que es el nombre de este pueblo?” She asked me.

I told her this was El Paso, my home town.

At midnight in the Pueblo Mágico of Aquismón, the municipal president stepped onto the balcony of the government building and raised the cry that was echoing across Mexico:

“¡Viva México!”

The crowd roared it back. Fireworks erupted from the castillos in the plaza, showering sparks over families dressed in red, white and green. Huapango music filled the night air.

And standing there with my camera, wearing a long red Wixárika skirt designed by my adoptive Mexican son and stitched by his first mother and my comadre, Carmela, I found myself thinking about independence—Mexico’s, of course, but also my own.

Because Mexico quite literally gave me mine.

We had spent three glorious days exploring the rivers, waterfalls and astonishing biodiversity of the Huasteca Potosina with friends and family. There would have been many more photographs to share if my cellphone hadn’t decided to take an unexpected swim in the river, carrying all its photos into the abyss with it.

Fortunately, I still had my Canon for Independence Day.

Our sweet little boutique hotel stood beside Aquismón’s central plaza, where the entire town had been preparing for the celebration. Inside, the staff had laid out a magnificent buffet: chile-red tostadas piled with black beans, fresh cheese and guacamole, along with sopes, taquitos and pozole with all the trimmings.

Ricardo had reserved our table, and his beloved Miranda was suitably impressed by the elegant marker bearing his name.

Outside, families played lotería at a long table while musicians filled the plaza with the infectious rhythms of huapango. The castillos—elaborate towers designed to ignite in a dizzying progression of sparks, spinning wheels and explosions—stood ready for the grand finale.

I wandered through the crowd with my camera, approaching some of the most winsomely dressed people with a line that never failed:

“I’m making a collection of the most beautiful people at the party.”

It always brought a smile and a pose, and sometimes a conversation.

A psychologist and teacher told me that Aquismón comes from Tének words meaning “tree beside a well.” Then I met Petra, a local woman who now lives near Dallas. Looking every inch the Tejana in her cowgirl hat and boots, she was dancing the Texas two-step in front of the stage. She invited me to join her and—possibly to the horror of my adoptive son—I did.

Subtlety was already out of the question. I was wearing that flowing red Wixárika skirt, its deer and mountains dancing around the hem, topped off with a red hat and an enormous tricolor bow.

Subtle it was not. Festive, definitely.

But as midnight approached, I realized that I was celebrating much more than a national holiday.

More than 15 years ago, after I had devoted over two decades of my life to the newspaper business, the industry jettisoned me—as it has thousands of its practitioners, people who had spent their careers bearing witness, holding power to account and providing the information democracy depends on.

Suddenly I faced a choice.

I could begin the exhausting search for another position in an industry that was becoming more stressful, less secure and increasingly poorly paid. I could probably manage to claw my way back into the same system and hope it would treat me better the next time.

Or I could finally follow a dream I had carried for years.

I chose the dream.

I shouldered a backpack and began making my way south through the Americas, listening to the people who were defending their territories, waters and ways of life—and to the visionaries building alternatives.

The Esperanza Project was born along the way.

I launched the online magazine and began interviewing environmental defenders, Indigenous leaders, artists, farmers, healers, movement builders and innovators throughout the continent. Again and again, I met people confronting enormous threats with creativity, courage and a kind of stubborn, luminous hope.

By the end of that year, the decision before me had become clear.

The Wixárika people were calling for support in the defense of Wirikuta, their most sacred site, threatened at the time by mining concessions. I answered that call and settled in Guadalajara, where I have lived ever since.

That decision changed the course of my life.

Mexico gave me the freedom to spend these past 15 years following the stories that called to me—not because an algorithm predicted clicks, or because an editor believed they would appeal to the broadest possible demographic, but because something in them felt important.

I began taking my assignments from my own divine guidance.

That path has led me into deserts and jungles, onto rivers and mountaintops, into ceremonial centers, protest camps, community assemblies and citizen parliaments. It has allowed me to sit with people fighting mines, dams, pipelines, megaprojects, displacement and cultural erasure—and with those planting forests, restoring watersheds, recovering ancestral knowledge and imagining new ways forward.

It has led me to people whose struggles and solutions rarely cross national borders, even though the forces shaping their lives almost always do.

That is what The Esperanza Project has tried to do from the beginning: carry these stories across borders and build the connections that our fragmented world so desperately lacks. Not to romanticize struggle, but to make visible the courage, knowledge and possibility that conventional coverage too often overlooks.

This freedom has not always been easy. Independent journalism rarely offers financial security. Following one’s heart does not guarantee a steady paycheck, and divine guidance has never been particularly interested in retirement plans.

But it has given me a life with meaning.

Mexico gave me the space to become the journalist I wanted to be. It gave me teachers, collaborators, friends and family. It gave me a home from which I could keep moving through the world, following stories of resistance, regeneration and hope.

And it taught me that independence does not mean doing everything alone.

The Esperanza Project has survived because of the people who have opened their homes and communities to me, trusted me with their stories, guided me when I got things wrong and helped me understand worlds beyond my own. It has survived because of the readers and supporters who believe these stories matter—and whose contributions allow me to keep telling them.

So this Independence Day, my heart was full of gratitude: for the country that gave me my independence, for the people who gave that independence purpose, and for all of you who have helped me sustain it.

After the Grito, the music, the dancing, the fireworks and the laughter, we finally returned to our room. I was drifting off sometime after 1 a.m. when I realized that none of us had drunk a drop of alcohol all day.

And we hadn’t missed it at all.

Pure joy, it seems, can be intoxicating enough.

Then, on the journey home, I stopped at a convenience store. As the young man behind the counter rang up my purchases, I noticed a small “D” tattooed beneath his left eye. When he spoke to me in English as unaccented—and as Midwestern—as my own, I learned that he was from Iowa, just north of my home state of Missouri.

I wondered whether he was among the hundreds of thousands caught up in the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign, torn from the lives they had built in the United States and now finding ways to begin again in Mexico.

I didn’t ask. He was working, and his story was his to tell. But whenever I meet someone who may be walking that difficult road, I try to offer a word of recognition and encouragement.

I told him I was from Missouri.

“So what brought you to Mexico?” he asked.

“I came for the Mexican Dream,” I answered. He smiled appreciatively as he handed me my receipt.

I said it without irony.

And I meant every word.

Encontrar la libertad en el sueño mexicano

En el Día de la Independencia de México, mi gratitud hacia el país que me permitió construir una vida —y un periodismo— guiados por el corazón.

A la medianoche, en el Pueblo Mágico de Aquismón, el presidente municipal salió al balcón de la Presidencia y lanzó el grito que resonaba en todo México:

“¡Viva México!”

La multitud respondió con un rugido. Los castillos estallaron en la plaza, bañando de chispas a las familias vestidas de rojo, blanco y verde. La música de huapango llenaba la noche.

Y ahí, de pie con mi cámara, vestida con una larga falda roja wixárika diseñada por mi hijo adoptivo mexicano y confeccionada por su primera mamá y mi comadre, Carmela, me descubrí pensando en la independencia: la de México, por supuesto, pero también la mía.

Porque México, literalmente, me dio la mía.

Habíamos pasado tres días gloriosos explorando los ríos, las cascadas y la asombrosa biodiversidad de la Huasteca Potosina con amigos y familiares. Tendría muchas más fotografías para compartir si mi celular no hubiera decidido darse un chapuzón inesperado en el río, llevándose todas sus imágenes al abismo.

Por fortuna, todavía tenía mi Canon para la celebración de la Independencia.

Nuestro encantador hotel boutique estaba junto a la plaza principal de Aquismón, donde el pueblo entero llevaba todo el día preparándose para la fiesta. Adentro, el personal había dispuesto un magnífico bufé: tostadas de un rojo encendido por el chile, cubiertas de frijoles negros, queso fresco y guacamole, además de sopes, taquitos y pozole con todos sus acompañamientos.

Ricardo había reservado nuestra mesa, y su amada Miranda se mostró debidamente impresionada por el elegante letrero que llevaba su nombre.

Afuera, algunas familias jugaban lotería en una larga mesa mientras los músicos llenaban la plaza con el ritmo contagioso del huapango. Los castillos —elaboradas torres pirotécnicas diseñadas para encenderse en una vertiginosa sucesión de chispas, ruedas giratorias y explosiones— esperaban el gran final.

Recorrí la multitud con mi cámara, acercándome a algunas de las personas más encantadoras y mejor ataviadas con una frase que nunca fallaba:

“Estoy haciendo una colección de la gente más hermosa de la fiesta”.

Siempre conseguía una sonrisa y una pose y, a veces, también una conversación.

Una psicóloga y maestra me contó que Aquismón proviene de palabras tének que significan “árbol junto a un pozo”. Después conocí a Petra, una mujer originaria de Aquismón que ahora vive cerca de Dallas. Tejana de pies a cabeza, con sombrero vaquero y botas, bailaba el two-step frente al escenario. Me invitó a acompañarla y —posiblemente para horror de mi hijo adoptivo— acepté.

Para entonces, la discreción ya estaba fuera de cuestión. Llevaba aquella amplia falda roja wixárika, con sus venados y montañas danzando alrededor del ruedo, y un sombrero rojo adornado con un enorme moño tricolor.

Discreto no era. Festivo, sin duda.

Pero mientras se acercaba la medianoche, comprendí que estaba celebrando mucho más que una fiesta nacional.

Hace más de 15 años, después de haber dedicado más de dos décadas de mi vida al mundo de los periódicos, la industria me arrojó por la borda, como ha hecho con miles de sus profesionales: personas que habían dedicado sus carreras a dar testimonio, exigir cuentas al poder y brindar la información de la que depende una democracia.

De pronto me encontré ante una disyuntiva.

Podía emprender la agotadora búsqueda de otro puesto en una industria cada vez más estresante, menos segura y peor pagada. Probablemente podía abrirme paso de nuevo, a fuerza de arañazos, hasta el mismo sistema y esperar que la próxima vez me tratara mejor.

O podía seguir, por fin, un sueño que había llevado conmigo durante años.

Elegí el sueño.

Me eché una mochila al hombro y comencé a recorrer el continente americano rumbo al sur, escuchando a quienes defendían sus territorios, sus aguas y sus formas de vida, y a las personas visionarias que estaban construyendo alternativas.

En el camino nació El Proyecto Esperanza.

Lancé la revista bilingüe y comencé a entrevistar a defensores del medio ambiente, líderes indígenas, artistas, campesinos, sanadores, impulsores de movimientos e innovadores de todo el continente. Una y otra vez conocí a personas que enfrentaban amenazas enormes con creatividad, valor y una especie de esperanza terca y luminosa.

Para finales de aquel año, la decisión estaba clara.

El pueblo wixárika hacía un llamado para apoyar la defensa de Wirikuta, su lugar más sagrado, amenazado en aquel momento por concesiones mineras. Respondí al llamado y me establecí en Guadalajara, donde he vivido desde entonces.

Aquella decisión cambió el rumbo de mi vida.

México me dio la libertad de pasar estos últimos 15 años siguiendo las historias que me llamaban, no porque un algoritmo pronosticara clics ni porque algún editor creyera que atraerían al público más amplio posible, sino porque algo dentro de ellas me decía que eran importantes.

Comencé a dejar que mi propia guía divina me asignara las historias.

Ese camino me ha llevado a desiertos y selvas, a ríos y cumbres; a centros ceremoniales, campamentos de resistencia, asambleas comunitarias y parlamentos ciudadanos. Me ha permitido sentarme a escuchar a personas que luchan contra minas, presas, gasoductos, megaproyectos, desplazamientos y el borrado cultural, y a otras que siembran bosques, restauran cuencas, recuperan conocimientos ancestrales e imaginan nuevos caminos hacia el futuro.

Me ha llevado hasta personas cuyas luchas y soluciones rara vez cruzan las fronteras nacionales, aunque las fuerzas que moldean sus vidas casi siempre lo hacen.

Eso es lo que The Esperanza Project se ha propuesto hacer desde el principio: llevar estas historias de un lado a otro de las fronteras y tejer los vínculos que tanta falta hacen en nuestro mundo fragmentado. No para romantizar la lucha, sino para hacer visibles el valor, los conocimientos y las posibilidades que las coberturas convencionales tantas veces pasan por alto.

Esta libertad no siempre ha sido fácil. El periodismo independiente rara vez ofrece estabilidad económica. Seguir el corazón no garantiza un ingreso fijo, y la guía divina nunca se ha interesado demasiado por los planes de retiro.

Pero me ha dado una vida con sentido.

México me dio el espacio para convertirme en la periodista que quería ser. Me dio maestras y maestros, colaboradores, amigos y familia. Me dio un hogar desde el cual podía seguir recorriendo el mundo tras las historias de resistencia, regeneración y esperanza.

Y me enseñó que la independencia no significa hacerlo todo sola.

The Esperanza Project ha sobrevivido gracias a las personas que me han abierto las puertas de sus hogares y sus comunidades, que me han confiado sus historias, me han orientado cuando me he equivocado y me han ayudado a comprender mundos distintos al mío. Ha sobrevivido gracias a los lectores y colaboradores que creen que estas historias importan, y cuyas aportaciones me permiten seguir contándolas.

Así que durante estas Fiestas Patrias mi corazón estaba lleno de gratitud: por el país que me dio mi independencia, por las personas que le dieron sentido y por todos ustedes, que me han ayudado a sostenerla.

Después del Grito, la música, el baile, los fuegos artificiales y las risas, finalmente regresamos a nuestra habitación. Ya empezaba a quedarme dormida, pasada la una de la mañana, cuando me di cuenta de que ninguno de nosotros había tomado una sola gota de alcohol en todo el día.

Y no nos había hecho ninguna falta.

La alegría pura, al parecer, puede ser suficientemente embriagadora.

Después, camino de regreso a casa, me detuve en una tienda de conveniencia. Mientras el joven detrás del mostrador cobraba mis compras, noté una pequeña “D” tatuada debajo de su ojo izquierdo. Cuando me habló en un inglés sin rastro de acento —tan propio del Medio Oeste como el mío—, supe que era de Iowa, justo al norte de mi estado natal, Missouri.

Me pregunté si sería uno de los cientos de miles de personas atrapadas por la campaña de deportaciones masivas del gobierno de Trump, arrancadas de las vidas que habían construido en Estados Unidos y buscando ahora la manera de comenzar de nuevo en México.

No se lo pregunté. Estaba trabajando, y era su historia: sólo a él le correspondía contarla. Pero cuando conozco a alguien que quizá esté recorriendo ese camino tan difícil, procuro ofrecerle unas palabras de reconocimiento y aliento.

Le conté que yo era de Missouri.

“¿Y qué te trajo a México?”, me preguntó.

“Vine por el sueño mexicano”, respondí.

Sonrió al escucharme mientras me entregaba el recibo.

Lo dije sin una pizca de ironía.

Y hablaba muy en serio.

Last Friday, the community’s communal lands commissioner was kidnapped along with his father and brothers. They were beaten before being released. The abduction was not an isolated event, but part of a much broader pattern of violence in a northern region that, as my longtime friend and colleague Agustín del Castillo has documented for years, is under severe pressure from organized crime.

In response, the community demanded immediate action from all three levels of government — federal, state and municipal — to protect its people and territory. The community gave authorities three hours to coordinate and come to San Andrés Cohamiata with a meaningful response.

Jalisco Secretary General of Government Salvador Zamora arrived, but according to the community, he left without providing the comprehensive response community authorities had demanded.

Then, as the authorities pressed for a more complete answer, a gunshot rang out.

A witness identified one of the Jalisco State Police officers present as the person who fired. A shell casing was recovered and presented as evidence. The community’s livestream captured what followed.

The Wixárika authority demanded that the officer remove the face covering concealing his identity and identify himself as the public servant he was. The officer resisted for some time, gesturing in combat gear and a face covering, while hundreds of comuneros surrounded the scene.

But the Wixárika authority was clearly in control.

Calmly and firmly, he explained that this is a peaceful community, that the community does not carry weapons, and that a public servant must identify himself to the people he is supposed to serve.

“Why did you shoot?” he demanded.

“He fired. He fired. The community is witness.”

That is exactly what the community authority says in the livestream transcript, along with a broader accusation that State Police have used their power to intimidate and threaten San Andrés Cohamiata.

The camera panned to a table with a shell casing and three automatic rifles loosely tied together with a rough rope.

Again, the authority demanded that the officer uncover his face and identify himself. The crowd pressed in. The officer continued to resist, then finally complied.

The authority advised him that a formal complaint would be filed against him. There was a witness. There was evidence.

What struck me most was the discipline and solidarity of the community.

This was not a mob. It was not chaos. It was not a violent confrontation.

It was an Indigenous community asserting collective authority over its territory in the face of armed and masked state power.

The community has been explicit that it does not seek confrontation. It is asking for a serious, coordinated and effective institutional response; protection for its families; respect for human rights; and a permanent working relationship between government and community authorities.

I could not help thinking about the masked federal agents we have watched seize people in communities across the United States, and how differently some of those scenes might have unfolded if those communities had possessed this same level of solidarity, organization and commitment to one another.

That kind of collective strength is rare. These days, Indigenous communities are among the few places where it still survives with this depth.

Meanwhile, the crisis is paralyzing life across the region. In the highlands city of Huejuquilla el Alto, the gateway to the Wixárika communities, people are stranded and unable to return home because all public transportation has been halted. Schools have closed, and the city’s long-awaited patron saint festivities have been suspended.

And this is far from over.

Today, supporters of San Andrés Cohamiata will rally in front of the Jalisco Government Palace, demanding an immediate end to violence and intimidation; a rapid and effective response from all three levels of government; and the creation of a permanent working group with community leaders to address the security crisis.

Community leaders are asking people to share widely — not as a symbolic gesture, but to put real public pressure on government authorities to respond before another violent incident occurs.

TateiKie: Una comunidad se mantiene firme frente a la violencia

Un secuestro, un disparo y un policía encapuchado — y una extraordinaria muestra de poder colectivo en la sierra wixárika.

Ayer vi desarrollarse algo extraordinario en la comunidad wixárika de TateiKie, San Andrés Cohamiata — la comunidad de mis amigos y mi familia, y una comunidad que hoy enfrenta una profunda crisis de seguridad.

El viernes pasado, el comisariado de bienes comunales de la comunidad fue secuestrado junto con su padre y sus hermanos. Fueron golpeados antes de ser liberados. El secuestro no fue un hecho aislado, sino parte de un patrón mucho más amplio de violencia en una región del norte que, como mi amigo y colega de muchos años Agustín del Castillo ha documentado durante años, se encuentra bajo una fuerte presión del crimen organizado.

En respuesta, la comunidad exigió una acción inmediata de los tres niveles de gobierno — federal, estatal y municipal — para proteger a su gente y su territorio. La comunidad dio a las autoridades un plazo de tres horas para coordinarse y acudir a San Andrés Cohamiata con una respuesta significativa.

El secretario general de Gobierno de Jalisco, Salvador Zamora, llegó al lugar, pero según la comunidad, se retiró sin ofrecer la respuesta integral que las autoridades comunitarias habían exigido.

Entonces, mientras las autoridades comunitarias seguían presionando por una respuesta más completa, se escuchó un disparo.

Un testigo identificó a uno de los elementos de la Policía Estatal de Jalisco presentes como la persona que disparó. Se recuperó un casquillo y fue presentado como evidencia. La transmisión en vivo de la comunidad registró lo que ocurrió después.

La autoridad wixárika exigió que el policía se quitara la cobertura que ocultaba su rostro y se identificara como el servidor público que era. El agente se resistió durante un rato, haciendo gestos con su equipo táctico y el rostro cubierto, mientras cientos de comuneros rodeaban la escena.

Pero era evidente que la autoridad wixárika tenía el control.

Con calma y firmeza, explicó que ésta es una comunidad pacífica, que la comunidad no porta armas, y que un servidor público tiene la obligación de identificarse ante la gente a la que se supone debe servir.

“¿Por qué dispararon?”, exigió.

“Él disparó. Él disparó. La comunidad es testigo.”

Eso es exactamente lo que dice la autoridad comunitaria en la transmisión en vivo, junto con una acusación más amplia: que la Policía Estatal ha utilizado su poder para intimidar y amenazar a San Andrés Cohamiata.

La cámara enfocó una mesa: un casquillo y tres rifles automáticos atados de manera suelta con un mecate rústico.

Nuevamente, la autoridad exigió al agente que descubriera su rostro y se identificara. La gente se acercó. El agente siguió resistiéndose, hasta que finalmente obedeció.

La autoridad le informó que se presentaría una denuncia formal en su contra. Había un testigo. Había evidencia.

Lo que más me impactó fue la disciplina y la solidaridad de la comunidad.

Esto no era una turba. No era caos. No era una confrontación violenta.

Era una comunidad indígena ejerciendo su autoridad colectiva sobre su territorio frente al poder armado y encapuchado del Estado.

La comunidad ha sido explícita: no busca la confrontación. Está pidiendo una respuesta institucional seria, coordinada y efectiva; protección para sus familias; respeto a los derechos humanos; y una relación de trabajo permanente entre las autoridades gubernamentales y las autoridades comunitarias.

No pude evitar pensar en los agentes federales encapuchados que hemos visto detener a personas en comunidades de Estados Unidos, y en lo distinto que podrían haberse desarrollado algunas de esas escenas si esas comunidades hubieran contado con este mismo nivel de solidaridad, organización y compromiso mutuo.

Esa clase de fuerza colectiva es poco común. Hoy en día, las comunidades indígenas son de los pocos lugares donde todavía sobrevive con esta profundidad.

Mientras tanto, la crisis está paralizando la vida en toda la región. En Huejuquilla el Alto, ciudad serrana y puerta de entrada a las comunidades wixaritari, hay personas varadas, sin poder regresar a sus hogares porque todo el transporte público ha sido suspendido. Las escuelas han cerrado y las tan esperadas fiestas patronales de la ciudad fueron suspendidas.

Y esto está lejos de terminar.

Hoy, integrantes y simpatizantes de San Andrés Cohamiata se manifestarán frente al Palacio de Gobierno de Jalisco, exigiendo un alto inmediato a la violencia y la intimidación; una respuesta rápida y efectiva de los tres niveles de gobierno; y la creación de una mesa permanente de trabajo con las autoridades comunitarias para enfrentar juntos esta crisis de seguridad.

Las autoridades comunitarias están pidiendo a la gente que comparta ampliamente — no como un gesto simbólico, sino para ejercer presión pública real sobre los gobiernos y lograr que respondan antes de que ocurra otro hecho violento.

At 14, he is still definitely a child — looking to his big brother Tzeliee for everything.

Soon enough, that will change.

Tzeliee, my godson and adoptive son, found the school when a group of student musicians from here came to perform in Guadalajara’s Centro Histórico. He did his due diligence and liked what he found: a school with a reputation for excellence, specializing in students from Indigenous and rural communities across the region, with prices that made it accessible to families like his.

Still a student himself at the time, finishing his last semester at ITESO, Guadalajara’s Jesuit university, Tzeliee had already set his sights on getting Osiel, the youngest of the family’s six children, into a good school.

He did everything to make it happen: investigated the entrance exam, the costs, the paperwork, the deadlines. He hounded his parents to get the documents together and make sure Osiel was in the right place at the right time. And he committed to paying the tuition — 2,500 Mexican pesos per semester, plus another 1,000 for food.

When he first told me about the plan, I just nodded, a little skeptically. I wasn’t going to volunteer for this, and I didn’t know who would.

I had already done my madrina duty.

Or so I thought.

The family’s village, La Laguna, has never had a high school and only recently got a middle school. Tzeliee — or Bernie, named for his father, Bernardo; Tzeliee is his Indigenous Wixárika name — was the eldest son in the Carrillo Ramírez family, and as such had a much harder time of it.

Despite the lack of schools in his community, he came to see education as his only path out of desperate poverty. At 12, he left home to continue studying, walking three hours to San Andrés Cohamiata, where his family found him a place to stay during the week. He would walk home again for the weekends. He persuaded his older sister Alma to accompany him, and the two became partners in the adventure.

Later, encouraged by their grandfather, they attended CRES Estipac, the private high school their mother, uncles and cousins had attended, an hour south of Guadalajara. It was a Catholic boarding school that catered to students from Indigenous and rural communities, with rigid rules and a demanding work schedule: long hours in the kitchen, bakery and gardens in addition to their studies.

Then the pandemic struck during their last year at Estipac, and that’s how Tzeliee and his cousin Yamina, and occasionally Alma, ended up with me.

Their younger sister and brothers, meanwhile, were unable to attend school during the pandemic and, except for Osiel, never really got back on track. Three of them are now working as migrant farmworkers.

Tzeliee wanted something different for his youngest brother.

He encouraged Osiel, badgered him about his studies and, when the time came, made sure he took the entrance exam at Amado Nervo.

Osiel passed.

And so it was that Papá Bernardo, Mamá Carmela and Osiel landed on my doorstep bright and early Tuesday morning and spent the week in preparations.

There was one major worry: despite repeated phone calls, the school system had failed to update Osiel’s records, leaving him without the constancia proving he had graduated from middle school.

Tzeliee scolded him mercilessly for not writing to his teacher himself and taking charge of the situation. I watched the brightness fade from Osiel’s face.

“Look,” I finally said. “He’s already miserable. This is not helping.”

Later, I invited Osiel to accompany me to the tiendita.

“This is actually not your responsibility,” I told him. “You are 14 years old. It’s the responsibility of your elders. Tzeliee is telling you this because he wants you to learn from it. He’s hard on you because he had to do so much of this himself when he was younger. He left home at 12, and he struggled a lot. But this is all going to work out. Soon we’ll look back on it as a bump in the road.”

On Sunday, Tzeliee got the day off from work, and we piled into the car for the three-hour drive to Tepic — through the green mountains past Tequila and Magdalena, Ixtlán del Río and Santa María del Oro and Jala, home of the world’s biggest corn: astonishing half-meter-long ears celebrated in a traditional festival I’m now pretty sure we’ll end up attending, since Jala marks roughly the halfway point between Guadalajara and Osiel.

Tzeliee was a good-natured and adept co-pilot, preventing a number of wrong turns with his attentiveness, serving food to everyone and managing an eclectic soundtrack.

Every now and then, I’d catch a glimpse in the rear-view mirror of Carmela, beaming.

Bernardo sat on one side, Osiel on the other. Osiel was dapper in a clean white shirt and the crochet-edged paño, or kerchief, made for him by his mother — the counterpart to the one his brother wore.

There was something about the sight of them that made that unreasonable happiness rise again in my chest.

When we arrived at the Casa del Estudiante Amado Nervo, Osiel and his parents went straight to the registration table beneath a huge Bienvenido sign while I looked around. I discovered that the residence is part of an educational project supported by the Movimiento Antorchista, a national organization with roots in poor and rural communities that has made education one of its central causes. Its philosophy is unabashedly ambitious: education is not simply a way for young people to escape poverty, but a means of understanding — and ultimately changing — the conditions that produce it.

That philosophy was literally written on the wall.

Partially obscured by a large palm tree that had grown up in front of it was a long exhortation from the movement’s founder, Aquiles Córdova Morán:

“Who will write books about economics, with new and truly fruitful analyses that enlighten the people and the entire country? Who will rewrite the history of Mexico from the perspective of the class struggle? Who will use data and mathematical figures to explain the country’s current situation and, with scientific rigor, identify the real problems and the true solutions? You, young students!”

You, young students.

There they were, the two brothers on opposite sides of the same threshold: Osiel just stepping through, and Tzeliee already far enough ahead to turn back and reach for him. Osiel just beginning the journey, and Tzeliee already far enough along it to reach back and pull his little brother forward.

When I first met him, he was the one struggling to navigate an educational world that seemed almost impossibly distant from La Laguna. Now he had his university diploma, a good job, plans for a master’s degree — and a 14-year-old brother whose future he was helping to launch.

And I found myself surprised by the way my own heart had expanded to embrace Osiel in a much more active way than I had imagined.

I had told the family clearly that after Tzeliee, I was through.

One godson was plenty.

But maybe this is Madrina 2.0: not starting all over again with another child, but discovering that the first relationship has grown roots and branches of its own.

Because this time, Tzeliee is taking the lead.

He found the school. He figured out the requirements. He pushed everyone to get Osiel there. He committed to paying the costs.

And then he found one of Tepic’s nicest restaurants for us to celebrate — La Gloria, overlooking the central plaza — and picked up the entire tab for the five of us.

“You paid for the hotel. Don’t worry about it,” he said.

Then, proudly: “It’s from my chamba.”

“Yes,” I said, smiling. “It feels good to have work, doesn’t it? Being able to pay for what we want without having to worry about it.”

It felt, modestly but surely, like success.

For both of us.

And now here I am, watching the sun come up luminous over a small city nestled in a moist green valley, my adopted family fast asleep in a nicely appointed room below me.

In a few hours, Osiel will begin high school.

My mind keeps returning to Carmela’s face in that rear-view mirror, and I find myself imagining what this must feel like to her: watching her eldest son, the boy who once had to leave home at 12 and walk hours through the mountains for an education, now making all of this happen for her youngest.

Poco a poco, they have become as surely my family as the one I was born into.

And here we are.

Yes, I paid half of the costs of this trip.

But Tzeliee paid the other half.

And in a way, he manifested me, too.

El significado de Madrina 2.0

TEPIC, Nayarit — Las nubes cubren las montañas que me rodean aquí, en la terraza de la azotea del Hotel Boutique Casa Mariano, un pequeño y encantador refugio en esta ciudad enclavada en la Sierra de Álica. Estamos aquí para comenzar un nuevo capítulo en la vida del pequeño Osiel, que hoy empieza la preparatoria y vivirá en la Casa del Estudiante Amado Nervo, llamada así en honor al periodista y poeta nacido en esta pequeña ciudad del occidente de México.

A sus 14 años, sigue siendo definitivamente un niño — pendiente de su hermano mayor, Tzeliee, para todo.

Muy pronto, eso va a cambiar.

Tzeliee, mi ahijado e hijo adoptivo, encontró la escuela cuando un grupo de estudiantes músicos de aquí fue a presentarse en el Centro Histórico de Guadalajara. Hizo su tarea y le gustó lo que encontró: una escuela con fama de excelencia, especializada en estudiantes de comunidades indígenas y rurales de toda la región, con costos accesibles para familias como la suya.

Él mismo todavía era estudiante en ese momento, terminando su último semestre en el ITESO, la universidad jesuita de Guadalajara, pero Tzeliee ya se había propuesto conseguirle una buena escuela a Osiel, el menor de los seis hijos de la familia.

Hizo todo lo necesario para lograrlo: investigó el examen de admisión, los costos, los documentos, las fechas límite. Persiguió a sus padres para que reunieran los papeles y se aseguró de que Osiel estuviera en el lugar indicado a la hora indicada. Y se comprometió a pagar la colegiatura —2,500 pesos mexicanos por semestre— además de otros 1,000 para la comida.

Cuando me contó por primera vez el plan, yo simplemente asentí, un poco escéptica. No iba a ofrecerme como voluntaria para esto, y tampoco sabía quién lo haría.

Yo ya había cumplido con mi deber de madrina.

O eso creía.

La comunidad de la familia, La Laguna, nunca ha tenido preparatoria y apenas recientemente consiguió una secundaria. Tzeliee —o Bernie, llamado así por su padre, Bernardo; Tzeliee es su nombre indígena wixárika— era el hijo varón mayor de la familia Carrillo Ramírez y, como tal, le tocó un camino mucho más difícil.

A pesar de la falta de escuelas en su comunidad, llegó a ver la educación como su única salida de una pobreza desesperante. A los 12 años salió de casa para seguir estudiando, caminando tres horas hasta San Andrés Cohamiata, donde su familia le consiguió un lugar para quedarse entre semana. Los fines de semana volvía caminando a casa. Convenció a su hermana mayor Alma de acompañarlo, y los dos se convirtieron en compañeros de aquella aventura.

Más adelante, alentados por su abuelo, estudiaron en CRES Estipac, la preparatoria privada a la que habían asistido su madre, sus tíos y sus primos, a una hora al sur de Guadalajara. Era un internado católico orientado a estudiantes de comunidades indígenas y rurales, con reglas estrictas y una exigente jornada de trabajo: largas horas en la cocina, la panadería y los jardines, además de sus estudios.

Entonces llegó la pandemia, durante su último año en Estipac, y así fue como Tzeliee y su prima Yamina —y Alma de vez en cuando— terminaron conmigo.

Mientras tanto, sus hermanos y hermana menores no pudieron asistir a la escuela durante la pandemia y, salvo Osiel, nunca lograron realmente retomar sus estudios. Tres de ellos trabajan ahora como jornaleros agrícolas migrantes.

Tzeliee quería algo diferente para su hermano menor.

Animó a Osiel, lo atosigó con sus estudios y, llegado el momento, se aseguró de que presentara el examen de admisión en Amado Nervo.

Osiel aprobó.

Y así fue como Papá Bernardo, Mamá Carmela y Osiel aparecieron en mi puerta muy temprano el martes por la mañana y pasaron la semana haciendo preparativos.

Había una gran preocupación: a pesar de las repetidas llamadas telefónicas, el sistema escolar no había actualizado los registros de Osiel, dejándolo sin la constancia que demostraba que había terminado la secundaria.

Tzeliee lo regañó sin misericordia por no haberle escrito él mismo a su maestro y hacerse cargo de la situación. Vi cómo se apagaba el brillo en el rostro de Osiel.

“Mira”, dije finalmente. “Ya está bastante angustiado. Esto no ayuda.”

Más tarde invité a Osiel a acompañarme a la tiendita.

“En realidad, esto no es tu responsabilidad”, le dije. “Tienes 14 años. Es responsabilidad de los adultos. Tzeliee te dice todo esto porque quiere que aprendas. Es duro contigo porque él tuvo que encargarse solo de muchísimas de estas cosas cuando era más chico. Se fue de su casa a los 12 años y batalló muchísimo. Pero todo esto se va a resolver. Dentro de poco vamos a mirar hacia atrás y verlo como un pequeño tropiezo en el camino.”

El domingo, Tzeliee tuvo el día libre en el trabajo y nos subimos todos al coche para el viaje de tres horas hasta Tepic — atravesando las verdes montañas, pasando por Tequila y Magdalena, Ixtlán del Río, Santa María del Oro y Jala, hogar del maíz más grande del mundo: asombrosas mazorcas de medio metro de largo que se celebran cada año en una fiesta tradicional a la que ahora estoy bastante segura de que terminaremos asistiendo, ya que Jala queda más o menos a mitad de camino entre Guadalajara y Osiel.

Tzeliee resultó ser un copiloto atento, hábil y de muy buen humor, evitando varios giros equivocados gracias a su vigilancia, repartiendo comida para todos y administrando una ecléctica selección musical.

De vez en cuando alcanzaba a ver a Carmela en el espejo retrovisor, radiante.

Bernardo iba de un lado y Osiel del otro. Osiel se veía muy elegante con una camisa blanca impecable y el paño con borde tejido a crochet que le había hecho su madre — compañero del que llevaba también su hermano.

Había algo en esa imagen que hacía crecer de nuevo en mi pecho aquella felicidad desmesurada.

Cuando llegamos a la Casa del Estudiante Amado Nervo, Osiel y sus padres fueron directamente a la mesa de inscripción, debajo de un enorme letrero de Bienvenido, mientras yo recorría el lugar.

Descubrí que la residencia forma parte de un proyecto educativo respaldado por el Movimiento Antorchista, una organización nacional con raíces en comunidades pobres y rurales que ha hecho de la educación una de sus causas centrales. Su filosofía es abiertamente ambiciosa: la educación no es simplemente una vía para que los jóvenes escapen de la pobreza, sino una herramienta para comprender —y, finalmente, transformar— las condiciones que la producen.

Esa filosofía estaba literalmente escrita en la pared.

Parcialmente oculto por una gran palmera que había crecido frente a él, había un largo llamado del fundador del movimiento, Aquiles Córdova Morán:

“¿Quién va a escribir libros de economía, con análisis nuevos y realmente fecundos, iluminadores de la masa y del país entero? ¿Quién va a reescribir la historia de México desde este punto de vista de la lucha de clases? ¿Quién va a exponer con datos y cifras matemáticas la situación actual del país y, al localizar con rigurosidad científica cuáles son los problemas y las verdaderas soluciones? ¡Ustedes, jóvenes estudiantes!”

Ustedes, jóvenes estudiantes.

Ahí estaban los dos hermanos, a lados opuestos del mismo umbral: Osiel apenas cruzándolo, y Tzeliee ya lo suficientemente adelantado en el camino como para volverse y tenderle la mano a su hermano menor.

Cuando lo conocí, Tzeliee era quien luchaba por abrirse paso en un mundo educativo que parecía casi imposiblemente lejano de La Laguna. Ahora tenía su título universitario, un buen trabajo, planes para estudiar una maestría — y un hermano de 14 años cuyo futuro estaba ayudando a lanzar.

Y me sorprendí a mí misma al ver cómo mi propio corazón se había expandido para abrazar también a Osiel de una manera mucho más activa de lo que jamás había imaginado.

Yo le había dejado muy claro a la familia que después de Tzeliee, se acabó.

Un ahijado era suficiente.

Pero quizá esto sea Madrina 2.0: no empezar de cero con otro niño, sino descubrir que aquella primera relación echó raíces y ramas propias.

Porque esta vez, Tzeliee lleva la batuta.

Él encontró la escuela. Averiguó los requisitos. Empujó a todos para que Osiel llegara hasta aquí. Se comprometió a cubrir los gastos.

Y después encontró uno de los restaurantes más bonitos de Tepic para celebrar —La Gloria, con vista a la plaza principal— y pagó la cuenta completa para los cinco.

“Tú pagaste el hotel. No te preocupes”, me dijo.

Y luego, orgulloso:

“Es de mi chamba.”

“Sí”, le dije sonriendo. “Se siente bien tener trabajo, ¿verdad? Poder pagar lo que queremos sin tener que preocuparnos.”

Se sentía, modestamente pero con certeza, como un éxito.

Para los dos.

Y ahora aquí estoy, viendo salir el sol, luminoso sobre una pequeña ciudad enclavada en un valle verde y húmedo, mientras mi familia adoptiva duerme profundamente en una cómoda habitación debajo de mí.

Dentro de unas horas, Osiel comenzará la preparatoria.

Mi mente vuelve una y otra vez al rostro de Carmela en aquel espejo retrovisor, y trato de imaginar lo que debe significar para ella: ver a su hijo mayor, aquel niño que tuvo que dejar su casa a los 12 años y caminar durante horas entre las montañas para poder estudiar, haciendo ahora posible todo esto para el menor.

Poco a poco, se han convertido tan plenamente en mi familia como aquella en la que nací.

Y aquí estamos.

Sí, yo pagué la mitad de los gastos de este viaje.

Pero Tzeliee pagó la otra mitad.

Y, de alguna manera, él también me manifestó a mí.

And then there are stories that follow you home.

Topolobampo has become one of those for me.

On Wednesday, I interviewed three of the people whose faces you see here—leaders of the Indigenous Yoreme-led resistance to the ammonia plant being built on the shores of Bahía de Ohuira, an internationally protected wetland on Mexico’s Gulf of California.

More than once during the interview, they said the same thing:

“Please don’t leave us alone.”

They said it to me personally. And then they said it to everyone watching—to Mexico, and to the world.

Because they are afraid.

And they have reason to be.

Several of them have already received threats and intimidation because of their opposition to the project. Mexico remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for people defending land and the environment, and also for journalists trying to tell their stories. Sinaloa, meanwhile, is the historic stronghold of one of Mexico’s most powerful cartels, and violence there is hardly new. But the current conflict between rival factions has made an already dangerous place even more volatile.

So when they say “Don’t leave us alone,” they mean it quite literally. Part of it is a plea for visibility—the sense that being seen can offer some measure of protection. But part of it is also a gut instinct as old as danger itself: there is safety in numbers.

So I went to be one more body there. For a week in July I stood with them, sat with them, ate with them, slept beside them.

For more than two months now, these men and women and their allies have maintained a round-the-clock encampment at the gates of the ammonia plant. They have endured temperatures above 100 degrees, torrential rain, violent winds, sleepless nights and the constant uncertainty of what may come next.

What I found there was not fear.

I found irrepressible laughter. A wicked sense of humor. Deep solidarity. A kind of stubborn joy. After 12 years of resistance, these people have learned that if the struggle is going to be part of their lives, then they are going to live it fully — with music, food, jokes, ceremony, friendship and love.

There was also hope. During the days I spent there, before and during the mesas de diálogo, there was a real sense that something might finally be moving. After so many years of being ignored, they were being heard. People were tired, yes, but they were energized too.

I did not feel the fear until later.

In Wednesday’s interview, something felt different. When they said: “Don’t leave us alone” —Not dramatically. Not as a slogan. They meant it.

That was when I understood that beneath the laughter and optimism, there was also a very clear awareness of the danger. And perhaps a growing sense that the moment was becoming more precarious, not less.

Today, as I write this, the government’s proposal is being taken before the people of Paredones, a Yoreme fishing village on Ohuira Bay, for consideration under their traditional system of governance.

It is the second in a series of four community assemblies in Ohuira, Paredones, Lázaro Cárdenas and Topolobampo, where residents will review and deliberate over the proposal before the communities give their answer to the government.

These are not public hearings in the conventional sense. The assemblies are being conducted according to Yoreme usos y costumbres, with restrictions on outside participation, photography and recording, and with the communities themselves holding voice and vote.

In other words, after 12 years of struggle—and after earlier government-run consultations that the communities say failed them—the people most directly affected are now taking the decision into their own hands, exercising their own forms of governance and collective sovereignty. In the week ahead, we will know their decision. But Wednesday’s interview offered a pretty strong spoiler alert. Claudia said it plainly: “Sé que la comunidad nos va a decir que no.” — “I know the community is going to say no.”

Visibility is not a guarantee of safety. But invisibility can be dangerous.

That is part of why I am leaving this image as the cover of my Facebook page for now. I want to see these faces every day. I want to remember to check in, to keep reporting, to keep asking questions—and to keep them in my prayers.

Pray that they remain safe.

Pray that they can continue their work without fear.

Pray for their families, who carry the weight of this struggle with them.

And pray that the courage it takes to stand between an industrial megaproject and a beloved bay is met with something stronger than threats: with justice, protection, respect and the right of communities to decide what happens to the places that sustain them.

The struggle over the ammonia plant is far from finished. After 12 years of legal battles, organizing, marches and resistance—and more than two months at the gates—the ¡Aquí No! collective has finally entered direct dialogue with federal officials and the company.

What comes next is still uncertain.

But the message I carried home from Topolobampo is not:

No nos dejen solos.

Don’t leave us alone.

¡Aquí NO!

No nos dejen solos

Hay historias que una reportea, entrega y deja atrás.

Y hay otras que te siguen hasta casa.

Topolobampo se ha convertido para mí en una de esas historias.

El miércoles entrevisté a tres de las personas cuyos rostros aparecen aquí, dirigentes de la resistencia encabezada por el pueblo indígena yoreme contra la planta de amoniaco que se construye a orillas de la bahía de Ohuira, un humedal protegido internacionalmente en el golfo de California.

Más de una vez durante la entrevista dijeron lo mismo:

“No nos dejen solos. No nos abandonen.”

Me lo dijeron a mí personalmente. Y después se lo dijeron a todas las personas que estaban viendo el programa: a México y al mundo.

Porque tienen miedo.

Y tienen razones para tenerlo.

Varios de ellos ya han recibido amenazas e intimidaciones por oponerse al proyecto. México sigue siendo uno de los países más peligrosos del mundo para quienes defienden la tierra y el medio ambiente, y también para los periodistas que intentamos contar sus historias. Sinaloa, mientras tanto, es el bastión histórico de uno de los cárteles más poderosos de México, y la violencia allí no es nada nuevo. Pero el conflicto actual entre facciones rivales ha vuelto aún más volátil un lugar que ya era peligroso.

Así que cuando dicen “No nos dejen solos”, lo dicen de una manera bastante literal. En parte es un llamado a la visibilidad: la sensación de que ser vistos puede ofrecer cierto grado de protección. Pero también hay algo más instintivo, tan antiguo como el peligro mismo: la seguridad que da estar acompañados, ser muchos.

Por eso fui. Para ser un cuerpo más allí. Durante una semana de julio estuve de pie con ellos, me senté con ellos, comí con ellos y dormí a su lado.

Desde hace más de dos meses, estas mujeres y estos hombres, junto con sus aliados, mantienen un campamento las 24 horas frente a las puertas de la planta de amoniaco. Han soportado temperaturas de más de 40 grados, lluvias torrenciales, vientos violentos, noches sin dormir y la incertidumbre constante de no saber qué vendrá después.

Lo que encontré allí no fue miedo.

Encontré una risa incontenible. Un sentido del humor irreverente. Una profunda solidaridad. Una especie de alegría obstinada. Después de 12 años de resistencia, estas personas han aprendido que si la lucha va a formar parte de sus vidas, entonces la van a vivir plenamente: con música, comida, bromas, ceremonia, amistad y amor.

También había esperanza. Durante los días que pasé allí, antes y durante las mesas de diálogo, existía una sensación real de que algo por fin podía estar moviéndose. Después de tantos años de ser ignorados, los estaban escuchando. La gente estaba cansada, sí, pero también estaba llena de energía.

El miedo no lo sentí hasta después.

En la entrevista del miércoles algo se sentía distinto. Cuando dijeron: “No nos dejen solos, no nos abandonen”, no lo dijeron de manera dramática. No era un lema. Lo decían en serio. Claudia habló de la enorme preocupación que sienten quienes han levantado la voz durante más de 12 años, y de lo vulnerables que pueden quedar frente al entorno sociopolítico de Sinaloa.

Fue entonces cuando entendí que, debajo de las risas y del optimismo, también había una conciencia muy clara del peligro. Y quizá una sensación creciente de que el momento se estaba volviendo más precario, no menos.

Hoy, mientras escribo esto, la propuesta del gobierno está siendo analizada por los habitantes de Paredones, una comunidad pesquera yoreme en la bahía de Ohuira, bajo su propio sistema tradicional de gobierno.

Es la segunda de una serie de cuatro asambleas comunitarias en Ohuira, Paredones, Lázaro Cárdenas y Topolobampo, donde las y los habitantes revisarán y deliberarán sobre la propuesta antes de que las comunidades den su respuesta al gobierno.

No son audiencias públicas en el sentido convencional. Las asambleas se realizan conforme a los usos y costumbres yoremes, con restricciones a la participación de personas externas, a la fotografía y a las grabaciones, y son las propias comunidades las que tienen voz y voto.

En otras palabras, después de 12 años de lucha —y después de consultas organizadas por el gobierno que, según las comunidades, les fallaron— las personas directamente afectadas están tomando ahora la decisión en sus propias manos, ejerciendo sus propias formas de gobierno y soberanía colectiva.

En la semana que viene conoceremos su decisión. Pero la entrevista del miércoles nos dejó un adelanto bastante claro. Claudia lo dijo sin rodeos:

“Sé que la comunidad nos va a decir que no.”

La visibilidad no garantiza la seguridad. Pero la invisibilidad puede ser peligrosa.

Por eso, en parte, voy a dejar esta imagen como portada de mi Facebook por ahora. Quiero ver estos rostros todos los días. Quiero recordar que debo mantenerme en contacto, seguir reportando, seguir haciendo preguntas y seguir teniéndolos presentes en mis oraciones.

Les pido que me acompañen.

Hagan una oración. Enciendan una vela. Envíen un buen pensamiento. Digan sus nombres. Compartan su historia. Sea cual sea la forma que tome la solidaridad dentro de su propia tradición, ofrézcanles un poco de ella.

Recen para que estén a salvo.

Recen para que puedan seguir haciendo su trabajo sin miedo.

Recen por sus familias, que llevan con ellos el peso de esta lucha.

Y recen para que el valor que hace falta para ponerse entre un megaproyecto industrial y una bahía amada encuentre algo más fuerte que las amenazas: justicia, protección, respeto y el derecho de las comunidades a decidir qué sucede en los lugares que las sostienen.

La lucha contra la planta de amoniaco está lejos de terminar. Después de 12 años de batallas legales, organización, marchas y resistencia —y más de dos meses frente a las puertas de la planta— el colectivo ¡Aquí No! finalmente ha entrado en diálogo directo con funcionarios federales y con la empresa.

Lo que viene ahora sigue siendo incierto.

Pero el mensaje que me traje de Topolobampo no lo es:

No nos dejen solos.

The Vanegas-Catorce aquifer is being depleted faster than nature can replenish it. Industrial tomato and chile production, along with large-scale livestock operations, are drawing heavily from an already fragile underground water system. Meanwhile, some nearby communities receive water only intermittently, and local people say wells that once reached water at shallow depths are drying up.

This crisis is not unique to Wirikuta. It echoes what I have been reporting from Ohuira Bay in Topolobampo, where Yoreme communities are defending the waters that have sustained them for generations. It echoes the struggles at Oak Flat, the Black Hills, Chaco Canyon and so many other places where Indigenous peoples are being asked—again and again—to defend what should never have been placed in jeopardy.

As part of the Festival del Agua, organizers are inviting people around the world to create Mirror Altars: prayers, dances, songs, poems, candles, ceremonies or other creative offerings made wherever we happen to be.

The idea is not that prayer substitutes for action. It is that prayer can remind us of our responsibilities.

A mirror reflects the people defending a sacred place—but it also reflects us. It asks what we are willing to do from where we stand.

Can we listen more carefully? Share the voices of those on the front lines? Help pay for transportation and meals so people from remote rancherías can participate? Challenge the policies and industries draining their water? Support independent reporting that carries these stories beyond the communities where they are happening?

This is where you come in.

Alzando un espejo por el agua

Queridos amigos:

En los próximos días, las comunidades del desierto sagrado de Wirikuta se reunirán para el primer Festival del Agua: un encuentro de tres días entre campesinos locales, representantes wixaritari, artistas, defensores del territorio y especialistas en agua, convocados para hacer frente a una crisis que avanza de manera casi invisible bajo sus pies.

El acuífero Vanegas-Catorce se está agotando más rápido de lo que la naturaleza puede recargarlo. La producción industrial de jitomate y chile, junto con las grandes operaciones ganaderas, está extrayendo enormes cantidades de agua de un sistema subterráneo que ya es sumamente frágil. Mientras tanto, algunas comunidades cercanas reciben agua solo de manera intermitente, y pobladores de la región cuentan que pozos que antes encontraban agua a poca profundidad se están secando.

Esta crisis no es exclusiva de Wirikuta. Tiene ecos de lo que he estado reportando desde la bahía de Ohuira, en Topolobampo, donde las comunidades yoreme defienden las aguas que las han sostenido durante generaciones. También resuena con las luchas de Oak Flat, las Colinas Negras, el Cañón del Chaco y tantos otros lugares donde los pueblos indígenas se ven obligados —una y otra vez— a defender aquello que nunca debió ponerse en peligro.

Como parte del Festival del Agua, sus organizadores están invitando a personas de todo el mundo a crear Altares Espejo: oraciones, danzas, cantos, poemas, velas, ceremonias u otras ofrendas creativas realizadas desde el lugar donde cada quien se encuentre.

La idea no es que la oración sustituya a la acción. Es que la oración nos recuerde nuestras responsabilidades.

Un espejo refleja a quienes están defendiendo un lugar sagrado, pero también nos refleja a nosotros. Nos pregunta qué estamos dispuestos a hacer desde el lugar que ocupamos.

¿Podemos escuchar con mayor atención? ¿Compartir las voces de quienes están en la primera línea? ¿Ayudar a cubrir el transporte y los alimentos para que puedan participar personas de rancherías remotas? ¿Cuestionar las políticas y las industrias que están drenando su agua? ¿Apoyar el periodismo independiente que lleva estas historias más allá de las comunidades donde están ocurriendo?

Aquí es donde entran ustedes.

When Maya poet and activist Pedro Uc Be begins to speak about why he writes, he starts not with romance or beauty but with destruction.

Across the Yucatán Peninsula, forests have vanished overnight, cenotes have been polluted and communal lands have been carved up by waves of megaprojects. For Uc Be — who writes primarily in the Maya language — poetry has become a tool not only of artistic expression but of territorial defense.

“I didn’t come to poetry thinking about love but thinking about the pain that all of this caused us,” he told a packed salon in December at the prestigious International Book Fair (FIL) in Guadalajara, where he was honored for his lifetime of work.

Land under siege

The first of these assaults, Uc Be recalls, came from industrial agriculture. Mennonite agribusinesses cleared vast tracts of jungle to plant monocultures, leaving behind what the poet describes as a “noisy silence” where birds once thrived.

This was followed by transgenic soybean cultivation and aggressive aerial fumigation that devastated local apiaries and native bees. And then, before communities could respond, industrial pig farming appeared on the horizon.

“They began to build large facilities over our cenotes,” he said. “The putrid waste from the vast hog farms began flowing into these ancient, sacred pools, interconnected in a complex system that flows into one of Mexico’s largest freshwater aquifers.”

“Today, there are 250 pig farms that produce more than 100,000 hogs each year, and only 20 of those farms are legalized; the rest are operating illegally,” said Uc Be. “Therefore, they do whatever they want.”

Just as the community had finished filing a series of lawsuits against the pork facilities, said the poet, even more projects came along, introduced to residents as clean energy projects.

The Maya Train

“We were happy when we heard they were clean, but when we realized they were taking away our land, we said, ‘I don’t think they’re so clean after all,’” he said.

Many of the communal landholders targeted for dispossession were illiterate and not fluent in Spanish, and so were easily deceived, and their land was taken from them.

But the most devastating blow, he says, came from their own government with the announcement of the Maya Train.

“They announced a train to us that we had never asked for, that we had never requested,” he said. “And today, that train has become the greatest destroyer of the Maya jungle and its cenotes. In Section Five alone, something like two hundred cenotes and caves have been destroyed.”

In the milpa, in the maize: Roots of a writer

Uc Be learned to love the earth in the milpa, the traditional Mesoamerican system of maize cultivation that integrates corn, beans, squash, a plethora of native plants and the rhythms of the rain and sun.

“I was born in the milpa,” he said. “That contact with the earth, with the water, with the herbs, with the jungle … made me sensitive.”

That sensitivity — born of tending the land — informs everything he writes. Faced with legal harassment, criminalization and political isolation, he chose to turn his observations into verse and story.

“What do you do in the face of all that?” he asked. “One of the things that occurred to me was to write.”

Maize as metaphor and origin story

His writing is deeply grounded in Maya cosmology and collective memory. In one of his most studied lines, he invokes the Popol Vuh creation story to articulate both origin and belonging:

“According to the ‘Popol Vuh’, we were made of corn.”

To Uc Be, maize is not merely a symbol but a philosophical anchor. It is through corn — its cycles, its rituals, its metabolic intimacy with land and water — that he understands the larger political struggles faced by Maya communities.

His writing also draws from the Maya’s understanding of life, death and ecological responsibility. In other poetry collections, he explores the Maya Day of the Dead — a time when, he says, ancestors return to eat, drink and walk with the living.

“For us, death is not definitive,” he said. “It is only passing to a greater plane of life.”

At the FIL in December, Uc Be was joined onstage by Mexican film star and activist Ofelia Medina, a longtime advocate for Indigenous rights.

Medina framed his work as a bridge between word and struggle.

“Pedro’s work shows us how language, culture and territory are not separate things but a single living cause that we must defend, transmit and celebrate.”

Her presence — standing with him as both witness and ally — underscored a larger truth: that Uc Be’s poetry transcends aesthetics and occupies a space of moral urgency.

Resistance in print

Uc Be’s literary output is prodigious. He has authored multiple books, written primarily in the Mayan language, including “The Resistance of the Mayan Territory in the Face of Dispossession” (“La Resistencia del Territorio Maya Frente al Despojo“). He’s also received awards for both poetry and narrative.

His work blends storytelling, verse and the rhythms of oral tradition as tools of collective memory and political resistance.

Human rights organizations such as Front Line Defenders have documented how his sustained territorial defense has led to stigmatization and targeted attacks on his reputation. Uc Be has been labeled by some political interests as an obstacle to development — a charge his supporters, including veteran Mexico correspondent and poet Hermann Bellinghausen, reject as unjust.

“He has been repeatedly singled out … in an absolutely unjust way,” said Bellinghausen.

At the same time, Bellinghausen praised the sheer force of his creative work.

“His literary productivity, fortunately, is quite torrential,” Bellinghausen said.

A cultural legacy continued

Uc Be developed his body of work not in isolation but in dialogue — through long conversations with elders, farmers and organizers and through community workshops, where stories, memories and concerns are shared and shaped collectively.

“The words of this book are not mine,” he said, referring to books like “Red Corn Ears” (“Espigas de Maíz Rojo“), which was written not just about the community but with it. His other books are likewise informed by his deep conversations, his reporting and his activism.

“They come from the community, from the elders, from what we have lived and shared,” he said. “They reflect our life.”
