The path to the castle is paved with sunbeam cobblestones. Your footsteps sing like wind chimes as you walk the path that winds up a steep cliffside of clouds. The air is light and breezy. Little butterflies made of clouds gently brush your cheek as they flutter on by.

You gaze up at the wondrous castle that floats in the sky above you. The castle is made of crystal—it’s a labyrinth of sparkling powder-blue towers and spires. Lofty turrets rise into the pale blue ether, their tops crowned with shimmering holographic banners. The castle walls are woven with silver vines, the kind that only grow in the heavens.

Translucent blue specters patrol the castle’s ramparts. As you approach, they notice you, but instead of raising their bows, they nod as if expecting you. You hear the portcullis creak, and the grand crystalline barrier rises, granting you entry. You step into the castle grounds.

All around, a magical celestial garden bursts with delphiniums, snowdrops, and eucalyptus. Bumblebees made of stars buzz by, leaving a trail of sparkles behind them. A gentle mist glosses over the calm, cool air. Lanterns lit with iridescent magic—cobalt-blue flames—illuminate your way to the grand entrance.

The castle door is adorned with sparkling blue gemstones. Before you can even knock, the door opens. Before you stands an angel. She wears a shimmering blue gown, her skin glows an ethereal silver-blue, and feathery white wings cascade behind her. When she smiles at you, her eyes twinkle and she radiates a soft, heavenly aura.

Galen squeezed his eyes shut so he couldn’t see the jagged drop. His dragon heart thundered in his chest, and he focused on his breath: in through his nostrils, out slowly through his mouth.

A sharp, scaled shoulder jabbed at his ribs.

“Open your eyes!” Aislinn hissed next to him. “You can’t fly if you can’t see!”

Reluctantly, Galen cracked open his scaly eyelids and peeped down the cliffside. It was at least a two-thousand-foot sheer drop. He shuddered and swept his gaze across the valley. The mid-morning autumn sun cast a golden glow on crimson and orange foliage. A soft mist lingered just above the treetops, but the sky above was a crisp, clear blue.

Aislinn grinned. “Breathtaking, isn’t it?”

Galen was about to reply when the ground trembled under his feet, and a few pebbles tumbled off the cliff. Galen braced himself—his heart pounding faster than ever—as Professor Alaric’s massive figure passed overhead.

The line of dragons on the cliffside—nine dragons total, including Galen and Aislinn—stood up straight as Professor Alaric landed behind them. In a thunderous roar, he announced:

“Dragons! It’s time for flight practice to begin.”

One by one, the dragon students lifted off. When it was Aislinn’s turn, she glanced at Galen, winked, opened her rosy-pink dragon wings, and leapt into the expansive blue sky.

Galen watched as Aislinn flew with a perfect balance of effort and ease. She seemed to know exactly when to flap her wings during flight and when to catch gusts of wind and soar. She tilted her wingtips with precision to match the wind’s direction. Her pink scales shimmered in the sunlight, highlighting her powerful flight muscles: the pectorals for downstrokes, the latissimus dorsi for upstrokes, and the wing’s extensors and flexors for precise movements.

She was mesmerizing.

Behind Galen, Professor Alaric cleared his throat loudly. “Galen! Get your head out of the clouds! Jump!”

Galen gulped several large breaths of air, as he was taught in training. (The excess oxygen would travel to a specialized organ, mix with a combustible gas, and trigger an internal thermal reaction, making his heavy dragon body more buoyant in flight.)

Then he stretched his wings—a brilliant blue like the sky—and took flight.

It was incredible.

The wind rushed at him in heavy gusts, but his internal equilibrium constantly readjusted to the changes in air pressure and wind speed. It was instinctive, the knowledge of how to balance in the air. As his nerves settled and his wingbeats took on a rhythmic cadence, Galen took in the view.

A winding river cut through the forest below. It sparkled in the sunlight glinting overhead. From this height, a few elk walking along the riverbank looked like mere dots. One elk looked upwards, likely noticing the dragons’ shadows.

The elk stared up, seemingly in awe. It must have been a sight for that elk: nine young dragons swooping and soaring in a cloudless autumn sky.

For Galen, the sights were even more profound. He could see to the horizon and beyond. His heart was bursting with the joy and wonder of it all.

“This is even more amazing than I had imagined.” Aislinn said breathlessly, gliding up alongside Galen. The tip of her wing brushed him lightly, and Galen felt himself blush.

“And I’m so glad I get to share this moment with all my friends—especially you.” Aislin continued, winking at Galen. She tilted into him, throwing him slightly off balance.

“Hey!” Galen yelled, teetering unsteadily before his wings leveled out. But Aislin had already sped off into the distance, leaving behind echoes of her playful laughter.

Galen huffed in mock annoyance and beat his wings faster to catch up to his friend.

As the dragons flew, the sun passed overhead and began its descent into the horizon. The sky grew hazy, then dark. And still, the horde of young dragons flew, enamoured with the wind beneath their wings. Behind them, Professor Alaric trailed, making sure his pupils were safe, but he knew he needn’t worry.

Flight comes naturally to dragons. They may be massive, heavy, scaled creatures, but in flight, they are balance and beauty.

🐉The Libra Dragon: Balance and Beauty in Flight

Libra is all about balance and harmony.

Libra season begins on the autumn equinox, when day and night are equal. However, after the equinox, the days begin to shorten as the Northern Hemisphere moves toward winter—a reminder that “balance” doesn’t always mean “equal.” It can also mean holding two opposing thoughts at once and teetering between extremes as needed: light and dark, heat and cold, movement and rest.

When thinking about balance in relation to dragons, a question popped into my mind: How can dragons—typically massive creatures coated in heavy scales—fly?

I decided to explore this thought. Dragons are masters at balance. Despite their large, heavy forms, dragons soar effortlessly through the skies. Some people credit hydrogen-filled chambers, others credit an internal heat source that creates buoyancy, and still others credit magic or spells. No matter the method, dragon flight is a Libran harmony of heaviness and lightness.

This balance between heaviness and lightness leads naturally to Libra’s element: air. Air represents thought, communication, connection, and relationships, so Libra Dragons are social creatures. You’re not apt to find one hiding in a cave or dungeon; instead, Libra Dragons fly in hordes and form friendships easily.

Their social nature also reflects Libra’s reputation as the “peacemaker” of the Zodiac. Libras are typically easygoing, even-tempered, and diplomatic. However, those qualities seem at odds with the usual stereotypes of dragons as fierce, short-tempered, and destructive.

Libra Dragons know how to temper aggression with peace. In the Libra Dragon mythology section below, I mention the myth of Shenlong, a Chinese weather dragon revered for providing favorable weather conditions essential to agiculture. But if angered, Shenlong can unleash destructive storms.

Libra Dragons may appear benevolent, but they have just as much power and might as any other dragon. When necessary, Libra Dragons are unafraid to bring down justice, so stay on their good side!

To stay on a Libra Dragon’s good side, share beautiful things. Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love and beauty, so Libra Dragons love aesthetics. They appreciate breathtaking nature scenery, hand-painted art, luxurious clothing, thoughtfully decorated spaces, and harmonious music. Earn a Libra Dragon’s friendship, and they may teach you how strength and beauty can exist together in harmony.

What we’re letting go of: ⭐Star reversed and Obsidian 🖤🖤

⭐Letting go of self-doubt and finding hope. 🖤🖤

Upright, the Star is a beacon of light in the night sky. It provides direction and hope even in the darkest times. Reversed, the Star is suspended in darkness, representing a loss of faith and direction. You may have been doubting your ability to take the next step. You may have felt exhausted, disconnected, and melancholy. You may have been asking yourself: what is this all for, anyway?

Obsidian—natural glass formed from volcanic magma—is a powerful tool used for protection, grounding, and shadow work. It is often used for scrying; I like to think of obsidian like a dark pool of water reflecting the deepest parts of the soul.

For this reading, I was called to place two obsidian stones underneath each of the dark pillars on the card. Having obsidian anchor the Star reversed in this way is representative of deep, intense shadow work that has been happening for many of us. Collectively, things are not easy right now…

It’s time to find our Star—our hope—again. This doesn’t mean everything will suddenly be love and light. If you flip the Star card upright, it’s still nighttime. We are still surrounded by obsidian shadows, but they are no longer dragging us down. A guiding light now shines overhead.

Reversed, our star goddess is suspended in murky water, drowning herself in her own emotions and self-doubt. Upright, our star goddess is glowing. The dark waters are behind her. She kneels, almost ready to rise. And she holds a vessel of water over her head like a trophy: look what I have overcome.

What we’re bringing in: 🌙 Moon and Malachite 💚

🌙Bringing in bold dreams of transformation.💚

How fitting that this card comes next in this reading! This is the natural progression of the Major Arcana sequence: The Moon (18) follows the Star (17). Both celestial bodies illuminate the night sky, but in different ways. The Star provides direct light, symbolizing clear cosmic guidance. The Moon provides indirect and reflected light, symbolizing the dreamy and hazy nature of the night.

The star may have given us hope, but the path forward is still unclear. The Moon is mysterious. It represents the unseen. It invites us to explore the depths of our subconscious, follow our intuition, and connect with our inner spiritual world.

In other words: it’s time to dream.

I was called to pick malachite as the accompanying crystal. Unlike the moon, which is subtle, malachite is anything but. The best way I can describe this vibrant green crystal is—zing! Malachite packs a punch! It aligns with the heart chakra, so it is a deeply healing stone, but let’s not mistake healing for gentle. Malachite is known as the crystal of transformation, and it is often a catalyst for personal growth and emotional healing.

I placed malachite right below the central moon in this card. In this depiction of the Moon card, two goddesses are actively feeling the moon’s energy. Perhaps they are even shaping the moonlight and calling it to them. Surrounding the goddesses are various spirit guides that represent inner wisdom. With malachite anchoring this imagery, the call of this card shifts from simply dreaming to:

Dream. Then create your dreams. Let your dreams transform you. Follow your inner knowing to the start of a whole new reality.

Overall energy: 🏆Seven of Cups and Carnelian 🧡

🏆Abundant opportunities—boldly go for them!🧡

With two Major Arcana cards at the start of this reading, this will likely be an intense season with much transformation.

As the backdrop for all of this transformation—the stage, so to speak—we have the Seven of Cups. Seven chalices present us with various choices. There are so many opportunities available to us!

This card often represents temptation, indecision, or overwhelm. And it’s easy to see why. Which cup to choose? What if, by choosing one, we lose out on another? What if one cup actually turns out to be empty? What if the contents come at a greater price than we expected?

This last crystal was the hardest pick for me! True to Seven of Cups energy, I wasn’t sure what to select. Then, this carnelian crystal caught my eye, and my intuition said, yes—go for it! Carnelian is a stone of courage, confidence, and bold action. It encourages creativity and passion. Carnelian says: go for it!

I put the carnelian in the bottom chalice because there was the most space in the illustration. But I could have easily placed it in any of the other six cups—it wouldn’t have mattered because all cups contain treasure! In fact, the crystal can even move from cup to cup at various times, if you’d like. No rule says you have to pick just one! This card has a hazy, dreamy rainbow background that matches the feeling of the Moon card. And carnelian, like malachite, is bold by nature. We’re being given permission here to dream, and dream boldly.

The water element appears often in these cards. The Star card is technically represented by air, but there’s also a lot of water imagery. The element associated with the Moon card is water. The suit of cups in the Tarot is also of the water element. Water represents emotions, relationships, and intuition. On the surface, this season seems like a murky, watery, hazy season. We’re being called to let go of self-doubt and follow our intuition. We’re being faced with many choices. This is not easy. But if we lean into this energy, we will find growth, love, and abundance waiting for us.

“Perfection is impossible,” you counter.

The dragon chuffs. “Perhaps,” she muses, “you have the wrong idea of perfection.”

Once the biscuits are positioned in a perfect circle on the plate in front of you (you don’t dare reach out again), the dragon pivots to the kitchen counter and begins her next task of finely chopping fresh dill.

“Perhaps, perfection is not a lofty ideal of everything being flawless,” the dragon continues, “but of things existing as they should—working according to the natural order of the earth to serve the highest good of all.”

You take a sip of the green tea the dragon had steeped for you, letting the earthy flavor wash down your throat before shrugging, “Sounds like idealism to me.”

The dragon sighs. “That’s because you humans do not live like this today. But once, when there were still many dragons who walked this earth, we had an agreement with Mother Earth. We needed her—just like we do today—to provide us with food, water, and safety. But we understood she, in return, needed our love and devotion.”

The dragon sprinkles the chopped dill as garnish on top of triangular tea sandwiches. She carries the tray of sandwiches to the table and places it next to the biscuits.

“We did not work against her like you humans do—taking more than needed, wasting precious resources, tearing down trees, thinking of her as something to be conquered,” she continues. “We worked with her. We built our homes within the forests rather than clearing them. It may have seemed like more work to meticulously plan the framework of our homes around oaks and roots, but in return, Mother Earth shaded us and protected us from the elements.”

The dragon sits in the chair opposite you.

“We foraged for our food, and when we needed to till the fields, we asked for permission first. Yes, we felt frustrated when the land did not cooperate.” She picks up her tea and takes a sip. “But we knew it was better to leave such land alone than to force production. As a result, the gardens we did build flourished.”

“It sounds like a lot of work,” you comment, eyeing the food impatiently.

“Oh yes,” the dragon agrees, smiling. “I never said perfection was easy. We tended to our gardens diligently, following the cycles of the seasons. It was a labor of love. When the harvest came—and it came aplenty—we gave thanks to her abundance.”

The bows her head in prayer. You follow her example, thanking the earth for the food on the table, the hard work it took to get it here, and for the wise company of your dragon friend. A pang of guilt strikes you deep within.

“Why me?” You ask. “If I’m not living this way, then why would you invite me to tea? Why would you share your food and company with me?”

“Because in you, I see potential,” the dragon grins. “Now, let us eat.”

🐉The Virgo Dragon: A conversation over tea

♍ Let’s talk about Virgo, shall we? Many modern interpretations of Virgo seem almost one-dimensional. Almost every source about Virgo will undoubtedly mention one word: perfectionist. Other descriptors you might see: serious, analytical, meticulous, judgmental.

There are, of course, more “positive” connotations: intelligent, hardworking, nurturing, devoted. But these characterizations still fall short of her true potential.

Virgo has so much more depth to her:

✨She is the goddess of the harvest. The constellation of Virgo is depicted as a woman holding a sheaf of wheat. In Virgo season, the northern hemisphere is transitioning from summer to autumn—a time of hard work but also of great abundance.

✨She embodies the maiden archetype (also called the “virgin,” as in unmarried woman or young woman, not the modern meaning of the word). Virgo as the maiden represents the threshold between girlhood and motherhood—innocent curiosity, fertile possibility, and tender devotion.

✨She is a guardian angel of Earth. Virgo is associated with Astraea, the Greek goddess of justice—not justice as in human law, but of Earth’s natural order. In Greek mythology, Astraea was the last immortal to leave Earth at the start of the Bronze Age after witnessing the degeneration of mankind. She ascended into the heavens as the constellation Virgo. Virgo is often depicted as having angel wings; some say she is waiting to return to Earth in angelic form at the dawn of a new golden era.

🐲And this is where our Virgo Dragon enters. Yes, she’s a perfectionist. Yes, she’s hardworking, meticulous, and detail-oriented. And that’s exactly how she’s meant to be.

Dragons carry great wisdom and ancient magic. As the dragon in our story mentioned, Virgo Dragons were much more common in times past. However, as people stopped living according to the old ways, the Virgo Dragons retreated from this earthly plane. That doesn’t mean they’re gone completely, however. Just like the mythic Astraea, Virgo Dragons watch over Earth, waiting patiently for the right moment to return and seek out those who are worthy.

If a Virgo Dragon deems you worthy, she may invite you to tea. She may lecture you. She may hand you a list of tasks to do (the dragon in our story seems to have been in a good mood 😉). She will require patience and gratitude. In return, she will provide abundance and devoted company.

“The girl’s gaze remains fixated on the tree hollow where the feather disappeared. The dark hollow has a hint of azure sparkle in it—a portal that beckons her to follow the path of the feather…” — Follow the Feather (Part I) 🪶✨

For a moment, the girl beneath the willow tree contemplates

the curious transpiring of events—the wind in the leaves, the wren in the tree, the birdsong, the floating feather, the mysterious portal—and considers how this all seems like a storybook tale or a dream…

If this is a story, then she is the protagonist, and so she says to herself, “Well then, I must go on and see what happens next,” and the willow tree leaves whisper—they seem to agree.

As she kneels beneath the willow, an exposed tree root scrapes against her skin, leaving behind a small scratch. The moss is soft under her feet, and ants tickle her as they trail up her ankle.

She is reminded that even in dreams, there is feeling, and to feel means she is living.

She peers into the dark hollow of the tree. She can’t see a thing, and the mystical shimmering seems to have disappeared. Disappointment fills her chest; perhaps she is not a fairytale character after all…

A familiar melody fills the air. The singing wren has returned. This time, his song seems to have words:

“Follow the feather, follow the feather…”🪶

The girl knows in her heart what she must do. She sighs deeply, crouches low, and crawls into the tree hollow. Then, she

The girl’s mind spins. She recalls a familiar tale about a girl named Alice, who fell down a rabbit hole, but Alice had a petticoat parachute and—ouch!—there weren’t nearly as many roots sticking out!

She remembers that even in dreams, there is feeling… and she must trust… that to feel… means she is living.

As the girl surrenders, she begins to feel weightless, like she’s floating in space rather than falling down a damp, earthy hole. Flickers of light begin to glimmer all around her, like golden stars in the night sky.

“It’s beautiful,” she whispers out loud.

As if it heard her, the darkness answers. Golden symbols appear as swooping sigils that seem to emanate an ancient, arcane magic. They are unfamiliar to the girl, yet she knows deep in her heart what they mean…

That’s when she notices the feather below her, a distant speck of azure magic. She almost forgot… the feather! But she is floating in black-gold space… how can she possibly follow the feather now? 🪶

Thud.

It is as soft a landing as it can be for a hard stone walkway. Surrounding the girl is still a black-gold void with shimmering gold letters, but now in front of her looms a castle door.

The feather—the beautiful, magical blue wren feather—floats by the girl’s head. She reaches out, but grasps only space as the feather disappears into the castle door’s keyhole…

The ringmaster’s grandiose announcement is interrupted by a blaze of fire that erupts from an opening in the back curtain.

The crowd shrieks in equal parts shock and excitement.

Stagehands rush into the circus ring with fire extinguishers, and the ringmaster snuffs out a flame on his coat-tail before continuing.

“Prepare to be mesmerized… the aaamaaazing… the powerrrrful—”

A ROAR shakes the circus tent, and the back curtains split to reveal...

“Sarauth, the Circus Dragon!”

The ringmaster’s otherwise booming voice can’t be heard over the thunderous applause, but it’s no matter. Everyone knows who Sarauth is. They’re all here for his performance.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The ground quivers as Sarauth’s four scaled feet step into the ring. His muscles ripple beneath brilliant rouge scales edged in gold. He towers about fifty hands tall at the shoulders, which is larger than even the elephants, so a specialty tent was commissioned to accommodate his size.

The crowd goes silent as Sarauth extends his sinewy neck toward the ringmaster, opens his gaping jowls, and SNAPS his razor-sharp teeth mere inches behind the ringmaster’s back…

The audience gasps, but the ringmaster does not flinch—it’s all part of the act. Instead, he begins a narration, his voice low and steady…

“It was the year 888, the Lion’s Year, and a great famine ravaged the countryside…”

In the circus tent, a fog machine spews gloomy mist and the lights dim to a sickly yellow. Sarauth lowers to his haunches.

In the foreground, an ensemble appears. Women in tattered dresses weep. Children with dirty makeup kneel and beg with empty hands. Men toil at imaginary fields, shaking their heads with exaggerated frustration at their futile efforts.

The fog intensifies. At the back of the showring, a castle set prop rises above the mist. Built into the castle is a platform with a throne, atop which sits a king.

“While people starved and suffered, King Medias sat on his golden throne,” the ringmaster narrates. “He spent decades stealing from the people and amassing wealth. Eventually, he built a castle so large it blocked the sun, rendering the lands below dark and infertile.”

The music grows ominous.

“What King Medias did not realize, however, was that this greatly angered the Sun God Rahe. Rahe shone his light for all to witness, and he did not like being obstructed. So Rahe, confined to the sky himself, called upon a great beast for assistance.”

Flames shoot up, cutting through the fog. Sarauth extends two large, leathery wings that flash crimson and gold in the spotlight. As he takes flight, wind gusts blast toward the audience, sending popcorn and half-drunk soda cups sailing.

Sarauth ascends so fast that he reaches the roof of the 150-foot-tall tent in seconds. His wingtips graze the canopy before he levels out, then he pitches and swoops down—right toward a portion of the audience. Spectators scream as Sarauth pulls up moments before it appears he’s about to hit the people. Sarauth then circles the perimeter several times, flying a mere 20 feet above the crowd.

Giant metal rings suspended by heavy chains descend from the canopy, creating an obstacle course. Sarauth flies toward the obstacles, maneuvering through each with speed and precision. He barrel rolls, he loops, he spins…

As the aerial performance continues, the music grows ominous once again.

“King Medias’s watchmen saw Sarauth approaching, and tried to stop him…” the ringmaster’s voice interjects.

From the back curtain, six men wheel out a loaded ballista, aim it at Sarauth, and—the audience gasps—fire a crossbolt in the dragon’s direction. But Sarauth doesn’t even hesitate. He dips down, snatches the crossbolt in his back talons, and snaps it in half—all while still flying.

The broken crossbolt crashes to the ground, and Sarauth shifts his gaze to the ballista. The men flee behind the curtain, and Sarauth opens his jaws wide and blasts fire at the ballista. It goes up in flames.

Cheers fill the tent. Automatic fire extinguishers snuff out the blaze, and a platform emerges next to the castle. Sarauth lands on it and stares face-to-face with a trembling King Medias. Sarauth opens his jowls and out comes…

…a tiny puff of smoke. The crowd roars with laughter.

But then… cue the epic music… the obstacle rings turn fiery. Sarauth snatches Medias up in his jaws and takes flight through the rings of fire. As he passes through the last ring, he dips down toward the ringmaster.

“Hey! What are youuuu—” The ringmaster is cut off as Sarauth snatches him in his talons. With the king in his jaws and the ringmaster in his claws, Sarauth soars out the back curtain.

The lights go black, and the ring goes silent. Then…

ROAR.

The lights shine on Sarauth, who bursts back into the ring, lands on the ground, and breathes a stream of fire up at the castle. The fire is steady, and the air is sweltering. He keeps breathing until many showgoers almost pass out from the heat. Finally, Sarauth stops. The castle, specially designed to withstand dragonfire, mechanically descends into the trap door built into the ground.

Sarauth has destroyed King Medias’s castle. He shoots one more blast of flame before flying back out of the tent.

The lights go dark and cold air circulates through the tent. Once the spectators can breathe again, they cheer.

The lights shine golden, and shimmery confetti cascades from the canopy. An ensemble of now extravagantly dressed villagers parades into the ring, followed by a shackled King Medias. The ringmaster takes up the rear. He and the ensemble take their bows before the ringmaster shouts out:

“Ladies & Gentlemen, let’s hear it for Sarauth, the Circus Dragon!”

The crowd goes wild as Sarauth enters the circus ring for one final time that night.

🐉The Leo Dragon: The Main Attraction

Leo is the star of the show. The center of attention. The main attraction.

Leo is ruled by the sun, which means that Leo is naturally radiant, glorious, and abundant. Leo’s symbol is the lion, which means that Leo is also regal, majestic, and courageous.

Then there are dragons: massive, awe-inspiring creatures widely known for their ability to breathe fire.

When you combine all these energies, you’ve got an unstoppable force. A Leo Dragon shines when he enters a room (quite literally, as Leo Dragons often have golden scales). All heads turn. He is a born performer, and he doesn’t hold back.

If you plan to work with a Leo Dragon, be prepared to be like the ringmaster in the story. You may think you’re in control of the show, but let’s be real: no one is here to see you. The audience is here to watch the Leo Dragon in all his glory. You’re just part of the act, so let your ego go and let the Leo shine.

Leo Dragons are not all performance, though—they actually are as powerful as they seem. Their stance is solid and their size massive. Their talons are long, and their teeth are sharp. They breathe out scalding fire. They fly at impressive speeds.

Having a Leo Dragon as an ally may mean you have to step back from the limelight and allow them to shine, but it also means you have a fierce, loyal protector by your side.

She watches the willow leaves waver in the wind.

She wistfully wishes she were magical like the wren that wobbles, at first unsteady

on the closest branch, yet when he finds his footing, he looks to the sky and turns empty air into song.

She contemplates the birdsong that rises and falls, a trill of a melody, vibrations moving faster than the bird could ever fly.

This is how it feels to create something magical—like birdsong on a summer afternoon, like wind whispering in the willows.

The wren pauses, voices a final trill, fluffs his wings, and takes flight. A small feather remains, and it dances in the wind to the memory of the bird’s melody.

The girl’s gaze follows the feather’s path.

Against the willow bark backdrop, the feather dips and twirls downward. It performs a pirouette, takes a bow, and settles in front of a hollowed hole at the base of the tree.

The girl sighs in awe of nature's miraculous magic.

She wishes she were magical like the feather that danced down to meet mossy earth.

Suddenly, something happens…

The feather, once warm brown with banded dark stripes, changes to a shimmering blue, similar to the hue of a blue jay feather, but even more striking.

The girl blinks. It’s unlike anything she has ever seen.

The feather pulses azure light and hums an electric bee-like buzz.

The feather quivers, dislodges from the earth, and is swallowed by the dark hollow of the willow tree.

A gentle breeze blows. The leaves rustle like nothing ever happened.

The girl’s gaze remains fixated on the tree hollow where the feather disappeared. The dark hollow has a hint of azure sparkle in it—a portal that beckons her to follow the path of the feather… 🪶

A loud splashing sound comes from the direction of the glistening sea.

Startled, the maiden glances up. Jutting out of the waves is a massive head, scaled silvery-blue, its elongated reptilian snout boasting pearly white teeth. Its eyes are a piercing cobalt blue, with cat-like pupils. It stares directly at the maiden.

Yet the maiden is not afraid. Rather, she is comforted by this presence, so much larger than herself; she no longer feels alone. Inexplicably, she feels compelled to talk to it.

“I am just so sad,” she tells it. “I yearn for something, but I cannot name it. I work so hard for everything, but I feel as if I have nothing. The deeper I love, the more my heart aches.”

The creature snorts in response, spraying white sea foam all over the kneeling maiden. Then, it opens its massive jaws. Its breath smells of seaweed and salt. Its sharp fangs glisten in the direction of the maiden, but she does not recoil. Instead, she wipes her teary eyes, stands up, and begins walking into the ocean, directly toward the mouth of the dragon.

The creature smiles a wide-toothed, knowing grin. Then, it closes its jaws, clasping the maiden in its grip, firmly enough to hold her, yet tenderly enough not to pierce her skin. And then, together, they go under…

The maiden wasn’t scared before, but she is now. Her vision has blurred, shapes are distorted, everything is a murky blue. Sounds are muffled, her lungs scream for air, her body feels weightless and heavy all at once. She wants to resist, but doing so would mean being pierced by the fangs that hold her.

So she surrenders.

The creature descends deeper. It has no legs, just a long, snakelike body that undulates like a massive fish or eel. Its long, scaled tail propels it through the depths with impressive force.

As they continue their journey, the great white sharks surrounding them don’t attack, as they are so small compared to the creature. They pass jellyfish, whose tentacles reach to sting the maiden, but miss due to the creature’s speed.

The maiden realizes that which she was afraid of is no longer a threat to her. That which once limited her has now freed her. She is thousands of leagues under the sea, but lighter and freer than she had ever felt before. She can dream the biggest of dreams, and they are carried along with the tides of the sea, ebbing and flowing with life.

The maiden should not remain alive, but somehow, she finds she can now breathe underwater. And she can see clearly now, with sharp underwater vision.

Up ahead, she sees a magnificent castle. Its spires are made of coral and gilded with gold. Schools of fish swirl around the castle, and seahorse sentries stand guard at the pearly gated entrance.

As the creature and the maiden near the castle, the fish part. The creature gently releases the maiden in front of the castle’s entrance.

The maiden floats, suspended in the deep and suspended in disbelief. She gazes up in awe at the pearly gates, which shimmer with the same pale glow as the moonlight that glimmers above the sea’s surface. A deep knowing fills her chest, and she feels her body transform. Her legs begin to fuse into a scaled tail. Her fingers grow webbed, and her skin glows a bioluminescent blue.

“Welcome home, my queen,” the seahorse sentries say as they bow.

Queen. Surely they are referring to the creature who carried her…

The maiden turns to look at the creature, but it’s no longer there. In its place is an iridescent pearl, shimmering under the sea like the moon.🌕

🐉The Cancer Dragon: Serpent of the Sea, Queen of the Moon 🌊🌕

Cancer season is such a tender time. It is also a soggy season. It is deeply emotional and highly empathic. It is ever-changing and fluctuating. Cancer season can feel difficult to navigate because of its moodiness, but at its core, this season is all about surrender.

To work with a Cancer Dragon is to learn to master one’s emotions by surrendering into them.

🌕 The sign of Cancer is ruled by the moon, which in turn controls the ebb and flow of the tides. Symbolically, this represents our emotions. As the moon phases change, so do the tides, and so do our feelings. A Cancer Dragon understands the cyclical nature of life—feelings come and go, phases of life shift in and out, beginnings turn to endings, which turn back to beginnings. A Cancer Dragon knows to ride the tides—and that powerful surrender grants it the power to control the tides.

🌊 Cancer is known for its connection to the element of water. It is no surprise that most Cancer Dragons are water-dwelling—oceans, rivers, lakes. They have fish-like scales, serpentine bodies (often legless) optimized for swimming, and they can breathe underwater. They are keepers of pearls and speakers of the ocean.

Working with dragon energy during this season intensifies the emotional experience of this season. Interacting with any dragon isn’t for the faint of heart, as dragons are fierce, protective, and extremely powerful. Cancerian dragons are no exception.

🦀 Similar to the crab that symbolizes Cancer, underneath a Cancer Dragon’s hardened exterior, past its sharp fangs and claws, beyond the intense waves of feeling, there is a soft, nurturing creature with much beauty to show us… if we allow it to. The Cancer Dragon is a mystical, powerful, primordial mother.

/Clarity/ Clear quartz's chemical structure consists of highly ordered, pure silicon dioxide (SiO₂), allowing light to pass through with minimal scattering.

Metaphysically, the physically transparent quartz is believed to cut through mental fog and restore focus. When you’re feeling stuck or scattered, you might try meditating with this crystal to clear out stagnant or negative energy and regain focus.

/Amplify/ Clear quartz’s transparency allows light to pass through, refract, and sometimes appear magnified, depending on the shape of the crystal. Clear quartz is also a relatively hard, 7 on the Mohs scale. Some feel this makes the crystal’s energy feel more direct, contributing to its amplifying properties.

Metaphysically, clear quartz is believed to amplify intentions and, when used alongside another crystal, amplify the properties of that crystal. If you have an idea that needs a creative boost, perhaps perform a simple spell or create a crystal grid using clear quartz and any other crystals that support your idea or intention.

/Manifest/ Quartz is known for its piezoelectric properties, meaning it can generate a small electric charge when mechanical pressure is applied. (Read a bit more in the nerdy facts below.)

This is partly why some people believe you can “program” a clear quartz by holding it and speaking or vibrating a specific intention into it. Think of clear quartz like a magic wand…

• Imagine your clear quartz like a magic wand. If you had a clear quartz magic wand, what would you create? What creative project would you bring to life? What ideas would you build on? What would you spend your time working on?

• Go quartz-gazing. Look at an image or words through clear quartz and see how it changes the view. How does it transform the words or images? Rewrite or redraw these words or images from this new perspective.

• Clear quartz divination. On paper, write down some creative project ideas. They can be ideas for a new project or ideas to incorporate into an existing project. (Make sure to space the ideas apart on the paper.) Then, use a quartz pendulum or gently toss a small clear quartz crystal onto the paper. Where the crystal lands is the next idea! You can repeat this exercise if you’re still unclear on what to do.

🪶✨Note from the Feathers & Flow Desk: I have a Substack article more in line with my traditional style I’ve been working on & almost ready for release, but my writing attention has been focused on entering a few contests as of late. Sadly, I didn’t win this one. So, I’m sharing with my readers instead!

The prompts for this fantasy genre short story. were “the power of a fallen leaf” and the word “paragon.”

I weaved in my love of folklore—Leshy are forest deities in Slavic folklore and Dryads are Greek nymphs. Tumble himself was inspired by the Koroks from the Legend of Zelda video game series. In turn, the Koroks were heavily inspired by the Koropokkuru, a race of little forest spirits from Ainu Japanese folklore.

I had fun writing this one, although I was pushing it close to the deadline! 🍃😁

Ancient legends speak of spirits who acted as forest guardians. The forest of Kokoro had many such creatures. There were the fearsome Leshy, who shapeshifted into sharp-toothed monsters to scare off unwanted visitors. There were the Dryads—beautiful fae who tended to the flora and fauna. There were the Elders—ancient, bent-over gnomes who served as wise counsel regarding Kokoro’s future.

🍃And then there was Tumble.

Boink! Tink! Bonk!

Tumble was an enigma; the only one of his type in Kokoro, and no one seemed to know quite what he was. He was only a few inches tall, and his body was an acorn, with stubby arms and feet protruding out of it. His face, although human-like, was quite ugly—a bulbous nose, round, bulging eyes, and big, bushy, black eyebrows. On his back grew a large oak leaf, twice the size of his body.

Tumble himself had no known skills, though he had a propensity for climbing trees. The task was arduous indeed, as his squat legs and arms could only do so much work to lift his rotund body, and his cumbersome leaf often got in the way of his climbing. In the rare event that Tumble made it to an upper branch, he didn’t last long, as balance was not his forte, and so…

Boink! Tink! Bonk!

Tumble fell from the tree branch, bouncing off the trunk on his way down, and landing right on top of the Grand Elder himself. Ooof.

“What in the blasted berries… Tumble!” The Grand Elder shouted, his old bones creaking as he dusted himself off.

“I…I… I’m s..s..sorry g...g…great s..s…sir,” Tumble sputtered. As he backed up, his leaf bumped into another Elder—a particularly frail one at that—and the old man collapsed to the ground. Two other Elders rushed to his side to lift him.

“Get out of here!” roared the Grand Elder, his face turning crimson with rage.

Tumble lowered his head and slunk off into the bushes, bumping into several Elders along the way.

Wait… a gathering of the Elders, and the Grand Elder himself?

Tumble stopped short at this realization. Something must be wrong. It was not often that the Elders gathered unannounced, especially with the Grand Elder present.

The Elders held monthly quorums in the Great Oak Chamber, where they resolved petty disputes. Last month, a squirrel stole another squirrel’s acorn stash. A fox ate some robin eggs, an act that was forbidden by the forest treaty. And a Leshy humiliated a Dryad by shapeshifting into a handsome mortal man, only to reveal itself after the Dryad excitedly beatified herself.

But beyond this, Kokoro was a peaceful forest—relatively remote and mostly undisturbed for centuries. There was never a need for sudden, open meetings in the forest. Something must be very wrong indeed.

🍃Tumble hid his acorn body in the bushes (for once not making a racket that would give himself away) and listened.

“Brain of a chipmunk, I swear… I don’t know what we’re going to do with him,” the Grand Elder muttered, “but back to the matter at hand… Elder Brambleroot, do you really think waking Bubarka the Leshy is necessary?”

Tumble gasped to himself. Bubarka was the paragon of monsters. In his true form, he towered almost as tall as an oak tree, with razor-sharp fangs, a hairy body, and long talons. He struck fear into any being that should be unfortunate enough to cross him. However, Bubarka slept peacefully, undisturbed, under the roots of the great oak tree, subdued by the tree’s sap.

“It is our only remaining option,” Elder Brambleroot said solemnly. “We tried gifts—the Dryads have left many an offering for the men. But they stepped right over them. We even asked the river sirens to seduce the men from the creek, but they seem immune to their songs.”

Elder Brambleroot continued. “We have sent all of our other most fearsome Leshy at the men. Yet the men were unafraid. They continued onward, shooting their guns at our Leshy. Sadly, several of them have fallen.”

A murmur of whispers rippled through the crowd.

“They have cleared many trees in the west of the forest already. I fear they will be headed this way next. And if they clear the Grand Oak… well, it will be too late for us. But Bubarka will awaken, regardless.”

Another murmur of whispers.

“Then it is decided,” the Grand Elder said. “This evening, we shall release Bubarka. Spread the word that all forest creatures must seek shelter.”

Tumble gasped, audibly this time. All the Elder heads turned in the direction of the bushes, but before they had time to say anything, a great BOOM resounded through the forest. Gunshots. And they weren’t that far off.

The men were much, much closer than the Elders had realized. The Elders headed toward the roots of the Great Oak—ready to awaken Bubarka, no doubt.

Chaos erupted through the forest. Birds chittered loudly, flying in droves to escape the danger. A large doe with her fawn bounded past Tumble, and she barely missed stepping on him. Dryad fairies hastily gathered their treasured flowers into handfuls, hoping to save as much foliage as they could.

“Oh dear, oh dear!” Tumble uttered to himself. “My forest! Humans! And the Bubarka! What do I do!”

Tumble was trembling, but after what he heard, he felt he must do… well, something. So he scurried across the forest floor toward the sound of gunshots and cracking branches.

It wasn’t long until the sight of the men came into view. There were perhaps a dozen of them, trampling through a forest clearing with boots ten times the size of Tumble. The men shouted commands back and forth. Trailing behind them, there walked a girl, a wee lass.

Just then, a nearby Leshy transformed into a fantastic black demon bird and dive-bombed toward the men. The men raised their guns, fired, and advanced after the bird.

But the child did not follow. She stopped to investigate a toadstool, somewhat oblivious to what her adult counterparts were doing.

Tumble crept forward, cautiously considering approaching. But then, he tripped on a small, exposed root and went tumbling out into the clearing.

🍃He landed on his leafy back with a squeak, his stubby little legs kicking to get the momentum to upright himself. The girl looked down at him with wide eyes. Tumble braced himself for her to scream, or stomp on him, or worse. He closed his eyes and said a prayer to the great goddess Danu.

“Oh, silly little acorn leaf man, don’t worry, I won’t hurt you!” the girl exclaimed.

Tumble’s eyes blinked open. No human had ever spoken to the folk of Kokoro. Granted, Kokoro saw only the occasional adventurer, and those who ventured this deep in the forest were typically very lost and very scared.

“Y.. y.. you… You can hear me?” Tumble stammered.

“Of course I can hear you!” The girl laughed. “Though your voice is very squeaky, like a scared squirrel. And you seem to be stuck. Here, let me help you.”

Before he could protest, the girl knelt down and gently plucked Tumble upright.

“I could have done that myself, you know!” He argued, more than a little embarrassed.

The girl giggled. “I know, but now, wasn’t it much better that I helped you? Anyway, my name is Emmaline, though you can call me Emma. Do you have a name, little acorn leaf man?”

“My…my…name…is Tumble,” he replied, still a bit shaken that he was talking to a human. Before he could say anything more, a gunshot rang off in the distance.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Tumble blurted. “Your people are hurting the forest, and the forest will hurt them back.”

Emma’s curious expression dimmed, and she frowned. “What do you mean?”

Tumble sighed and shrugged. How silly of him to have faith in a human. Even though she could hear him and understand his words, of course, she still did not understand what he actually meant. He turned his leafy back to Emma and began to walk away toward the brush.

“Wait!” Emma piped after him. “I want to know. Please, tell me.”

With a sigh, Tumble agreed and motioned her to follow. He led Emma down a narrow, root-covered path, one where the men’s large boots could not fit. As they walked through the verdant vegetation, Emma noticed all the scared creatures. A nervous dragonfly darted frantically away. In a patch of Bluebells, a trembling Dryad clutched onto a freshly picked bouquet as if it were her last. A family of rabbits huddled beneath a fallen log, next to which was a freshly sawed stump. As Emma’s eyes fell on the stump, her eyes welled with tears.

“I’m sorry,” she murmured.

“This is our home,” Tumble replied, his little acorn heart breaking at the sight of the fallen tree. “Not just the trees and leaves, but all of us animals and spirits.”

Tumble told her about the Elders—gnomes said to be older than the forest itself—who scratched their gray beards in deliberation as they listened to the birds argue over a worm. He told Emma of the forest treaty that stipulated what could not be disturbed, like freshly laid eggs. And he told of animals like foxes who sometimes disregarded those rules for a tasty snack. He told of the Dryads and their love for all things beautiful. He told of the river sirens, who hummed the forest to sleep at night. And he told of the Leshy: sometimes harmless, always mischievous, and often fierce.

Finally, he told Emma about Bubarka, a Leshy so terrifying that even the Elders spoke of him in whispers.

“If he wakes,” Tumble said, “he will destroy everything in his path. He will not know the difference between a hunter, a woodcutter, or an innocent child. He will only know that Kokoro is in danger.”

Emma’s eyes widened. Another gunshot cracked in the distance. Emma flinched, then looked down at Tumble.

“Then we must do something about it and stop the men!” she exclaimed. “Before your monster wakes and before my people destroy the forest of Kokoro!”

Emma took off at once, her knobby knees knocking against fallen branches as she ran. Tumble lagged behind, running as fast as he could in breathless hops.

They found the men in a birch grove, arguing over which tree to cut.

“Stop!” Emma yelled out. “Please, stop! The forest is alive, and it is scared! And it will attack us if we continue!”

The men did stop, if for just a moment, to huff at Emma’s pleas. One man told her not to tell fairy tales. Another said the woods were making her fanciful. Another grumbled under his breath that he should have just left her behind in the village, motherless and all that she was.

But Emma stood firm, shaking her head. “I’m not fanciful! The forest guardians are real, I tell you! Hear it from Tumble, the acorn leaf guardian himself!”

The men broke out into guffaws of laughter. Still indignant, Emma stood and motioned for Tumble to come out.

🍃Tumble froze behind a large fern. He was used to the laughter. The ridicule. The dismissiveness of others. But then he thought of the Dryad’s desperation, the frightened fawn, and the fearsome beast that, at least for now, slumbered beneath the roots of the Great Oak. His leaf trembled. He took a deep breath and tiptoed into the clearing.

The men stopped laughing, at least. The silence was deafening as they stared at the tiny walking acorn man with a leaf on his back. One man rubbed his eyes, blinking in disbelief. Another’s hand went toward the half-empty whisky bottle on his belt—no doubt wondering if he had indeed drunk too much.

“P…p…please,” Tumble said, his small, quivering voice breaking the silence. “Do not cut down any more trees in Kokoro. Do not fire your guns. You have frightened the Dryads, killed the Leshy, and driven the woodland animals from their homes. The Elders plan to wake Bubarka, and if they do, this forest will become dangerous for every living thing in it… most especially you.”

The men continued to stare, open-mouthed. One dropped his axe. Another crossed himself. But they all heard Tumble, as loud and clear as his tiny voice could carry, at least.

Finally, the largest among the men lowered his shotgun.

“I have suspected that the old folk tales about this forest were true,” he murmured, “ever since we saw the first offerings of flowers and fruit, then the dark shadows that tried to attack us, and then the odd humming in my ears at night. I feared I was going mad.”

“Perhaps I am indeed mad,” he continued, all eyes on him. “For an acorn leaf man stands before me and speaks of storybook creatures. But if I am not mad—if the tales are true, then this forest is more sacred than we can afford to lose. And if the tales are true, and if our actions threaten the release of the Bubarka, we must stop at once, as we are in grave danger.”

The men began to argue among themselves, shouting and cursing. Tumble stood frozen until a bird whistled at him in the trees. A warning whistle.

“We must go quickly!” cried Tumble. “The Elders are already at the roots of Great Oak.”

Emma, the larger man who had spoken, and one other man raced through the forest after Tumble. Tumble’s little legs had never run so far—it was as if his leaf picked up wind and propelled him forward. Birds burst from branches. Mice scurried out of the way. And still, they ran.

They reached the Grand Oak just as the Elders were gathered in a circle around its roots, reciting a low, ancient chant. The Grand Elder whirled around when he heard the clamor, and then his face paled when he saw the men.

“Humans!” He screeched, and the other Elders snapped up, frightened and incensed all at once. All eyes landed on Tumble.

“Have you lost what little sense you had, Tumble?” the Grand Elder thundered. “Leading humans to the Great Oak, the very heartbeat of this forest?”

🍃Tumble wanted to disappear under his leaf and never be seen again. Instead, he stepped forward until he stood directly in front of the Grand Elder. He took a big breath and waited for his shaking leaf to steady.

“No, Grand Elder,” he said, bowing his head. “I have brought them to listen.”

Then, as quickly as he could get out the words, he explained how Emma heard him. How he had talked to the men. How, although some of the men were hesitant and some were still in disbelief, they were beginning to understand the gravity of protecting Kokoro Forest.

When he finished, the Grand Elder turned to the two men and asked, “Is this true? Do you swear to stop your attacks on our lands?”

The men blinked blankly back at him. Tumble felt his whole acorn body go numb with the thought that this was useless. Perhaps the men would just destroy them all here. But then, he noticed the clueless looks on their faces.

They couldn’t understand the Grand Elder. It was him. They could hear only him. And so, he repeated the Elder’s question to them. And Tumble relayed their answer: Yes, but there were questions and some requests.

The men and the forest spirits sat at the roots of the Great Oak tree for many hours, Tumble translating all the while. The Grand Elder answered all questions about the forest as honestly as he could, without breaking vows to keep its magic secret. The men explained their plight: their lands had gone fallow, and they were threatened with famine if they did not clear new land for settlement.

As the sun set and the river spirits began to hum, a tentative agreement was reached. The Elders would not wake the Bubarka, and the other Leshy would no longer maliciously attack the men (“harmless” pranks, however, were still a topic of debate…). In turn, the men would not clear any more trees. They would be allowed to build in the area that they had already cleared, and if they remained respectful, the Dryads would show them how to live in bounty and balance with Kokoro.

It wouldn’t be an easy road ahead. Many men would remain hesitant. Some would get hotheaded and shoot at a bird or Leshy in disguise. Sometimes, people were dissatisfied with the berries and fish, and nuts that were aplenty in Kokoro, lamenting that they would prefer fresh game. The forest sirens resented the noisy humans, complaining that they stayed awake late into their nighttime songs.

🍃But Tumble—still the only forest spirit who could speak with humankind—acted as ambassador and messenger between the two worlds. The Elders gave him a new title: Speaker of the Forest. It was his duty to meet with the new settlers to Kokoro, to warn away the greedy, welcome the respectful, and keep peace between animal and human and spirit. At first, Tumble scarcely believed it. He, who had been falling out of trees his whole life, was now guardian of the woods that had never known what to do with him.

Boink! Tink! Bonk!

If you ever visit the village that sits along the western edge of Kokoro, you may feel a tap on your head as a leaf-covered acorn bounces off your head and tumbles to the ground. Don’t be alarmed—that’s just Tumble: the Speaker of the Forest.

The Gemini Dragon: Two heads are better than one🐲🐲

Oh, Gemini season! Gemini brings with it a swirl of thoughts and ideas. It’s busy and buzzy. It’s loud and vocal. It’s creative and expressive. It’s dualistic and chaotic.

And a Gemini dragon embodies these traits.

Gemini dragons are known for their dual nature and often have two heads (sometimes more!). This comes from Gemini’s association with twins. The Gemini constellation’s two brightest stars, Castor and Pollux, are named for the inseparable twins of Greek mythology.

As an air sign, Gemini energy can be curious and scattered. Gemini dragons often take on several projects at once, only to become distracted when a new idea catches their fancy. The result: the scribblings of a poem, a hum of a melody, a half-read book, and boy-oh-boy… lots of opinions on lots of things! Gemini dragons can change their minds quickly and are fickle in their moods. When working with a Gemini dragon, flexibility is important. While they may struggle with consistency, these creatures have a lot to teach us about adaptability.

Even in battle, Gemini dragons are adaptable. They aren’t the “typical” monsters that fight with fire and pure physical power. When fighting a Gemini dragon, be prepared to win with your wits, not merely your sword. These are creatures of the mind and voice; they are quick-witted, sharp-tongued, and cunning. Gemini’s ruling planet is Mercury. Known as “the messenger,” Mercury is the planet of communication, thought, and intelligence. Gemini dragons greatly value learning, art, poetry, books, theater, and music.

Gemini dragons are a lot of fun to have around. But they can also be a handful, so if you’re going on a quest and you happen to be accompanied by a Gemini dragon (because, well, why not?), be prepared for a voice—or two—talking throughout the whole adventure! Gemini dragons are chatty, curious, and a little mischievous. As they are oft to say: “Two heads are better than one.”

Verdant ivy coils up the stone walls that surround the garden. Flower beds burst with vibrant violets and purple and gold pansies. Roses climb up oak trees and then cascade down in soft pink curtains around the stepping stone path that weaves like a labyrinth through the garden. The intoxicating aroma of lavender and sage floats through the air. Somewhere, hidden deep within moss and ferns, a fountain burbles.

You lean against the nearest tree and sigh in contentment, taking it all in.

“It’s lovely, isn’t it?”

The voice comes from above you, in the lush green canopy. You jolt upright, your eyes wide as you search for the source.

“Oh, darling, don’t be startled,” the voice assures you in a honeyed tone. “You are safe here, in my garden.”

Then the tree you were just leaning on… moves.

The trunk shape-shifts into the body of a massive being. The thick roots separate from the mossy earth in which they were embedded, forming long legs with sharp talons at the base. Textured tree bark morphs into scales, and ridges form on the back of the tree, like a spiky spine.

You look up. Leafy emerald eyes blink back at you. There’s a face in the tree’s canopy. The face… of a… dragon.

“My name is Vivienne,” she intones. “This is a special place in which you have found yourself. Only the lucky few are transported here. You will return in time, but for now, stay a while. Let me show you around the Garden of Dragons.”

Vivienne the dragon extends a scaly foreleg and plucks a golden apple from a nearby apple tree. Gingerly—careful not to pierce it with her talons—she hands it to you. A gift.

You bite into the apple, and savour its deliciousness, and as the sweet juice runs down your chin, you look around. The garden is coming to life. You follow Vivienne as she beckons you down the path.

A bed of mint leaves shifts as a large emerald dragon arises from it. Nearby, an earthy brown dragon is digging holes in an unseeded garden bed.

Among the Delphiniums, a little critter scurries out—a pink dragon the size of a housecat. It runs up to you and purrs.

A pair of golden dragons slow dance in the buttercups to... is that soft jazz playing? In the distance, you see a trio of dragons playing music under a cherry blossom tree.

In a nearby bush, you notice a nest full of eggs. They’re dragon eggs—shimmery and gleaming like gemstones. You take a careful step forward, enticed by their beauty and strange, magical aura. For a moment, the garden seems to fall away. The music quiets. The leaves stop rustling. The air goes still.

But just as you lean in for a closer look, Vivienne’s roar shakes the branches overhead.

“Do not touch the precious eggs!” she commands, moving her massive frame between you and the nest. Her voice is no longer honeyed but sharp, like the jagged edges of a cliff.

You freeze, your breath caught in your throat, both in awe and in fear. You swallow and nod. You do not want to anger the garden guardian. And you understand: these eggs are sacred.

Vivienne’s expression softens, though the warning in her gaze remains. Suddenly, the scent of lavender and sage grows thick around you. The path beneath your feet seems to sway. The colors of the gardens—the violets, the roses, the mossy stones—blur into a watercolor wash of green and gold.

Your vision grows hazy and then goes dark.

~When you open your eyes, you’re sitting cross-legged in meditation once more, in familiar surroundings, as if you never left at all. But as you glance out the window, a slight movement in the brush outside catches your attention. For the briefest moment, you swear you see a pair of emerald eyes blinking back at you.~

The Taurus Dragon: The Garden Guardian🐉

Ah, slow, sweet Taurus season. Taurus, the second sign of the Zodiac, provides a much-needed stabilization period after the fiery energy of Aries. Taurus aims to build a solid foundation for long-term dreams. But this season isn’t necessarily just about hard work. Taurus—ruled by Venus, the goddess of love—is about fertility, abundance, and all things pleasurable. Taurus is about building a life that feels both pleasurable and productive.

Enter the Taurus dragon. Taurus dragons are one with the earth element—trees, gardens, forests, and mountains. They are quiet guardians who observe from hidden places until they decide you are safe to approach. If you are deemed worthy of their trust, the Taurus dragon will share the most luxurious magic with you. Think garden tea party vibes: beautiful blooms, sweet sips, decadent treats, and joyous music and dancing. At their best, these are dragons of wonder and whimsy.

Yet beneath all that beauty lies fierce protectiveness. If you earn a Taurus dragon’s distrust—watch out! Taurus’s symbol is the strong and stubborn bull. Taurus dragons are slow to anger, but unyielding once provoked. Because of this, Taurus dragons often get a bad reputation as destructive and dangerous. (See: Taurus Dragon Mythology below.) The shadow side of Taurus is indeed its stubbornness, but that’s because Taurus, which aims for stability and safety, wants to protect its precious resources.

To work with the Taurus dragon is to know when to savour luxury, when to build it, and when to protect it. Taurus energy is not about excess for its own sake, but about creating a life that feels nourishing, beautiful, and secure.

🪶A note from the Feathers & Flow Desk 🪶

One year ago, I formally announced the creation of my Substack, Feathers & Flow Creative. Since then, it’s become both a return to creativity and a spiritual practice through writing. Now, it’s time to provide a clearer structure and a regular posting cadence. I hope to continue writing my recurring series, introduce new series, and write more intuitive transmissions + poems.

🪶Reflecting: At the beginning of Feathers & Flow, ideas came to me in bursts of inspiration after years of being a burned-out writer. I had no plan, just a deep desire within to live a more creative life through writing. It was time to step into the flow and follow the feather’s path.

It’s been a softly unfolding journey. (See: Highlights from year one below.) My intention was to share my words with those who were meant to read them (Hi, and thank you!). What surprised me was that this project was more for me than anyone else. This project has asked me to slow down, get more concise, and honor my creative cycles.

Honoring those cycles meant letting the rhythm change. After the initial writing buzz wore off, my posting frequency slowed, and then, in the dark months of winter, I descended into a hermit phase that gave my nervous system the reset it needed…

…and, with the start of fiery, inspired Aries season and the steady, luxurious Taurus season, I’m back, baby!

🪶What’s changing now: I’m ready to streamline and clarify my vision. Expect to see some long-overdue introduction pieces to my existing series. Also, I plan on integrating the “feather” theme more, so expect to see a more cohesive vibe throughout my posts.

Posting will be more regular: at least a few times a month. About what, you ask?

✨Crystals for Creativity — An Introduction✨

🪶About a year ago, I started writing my Crystals for Creativity series on Substack. The series came to me in a burst of inspiration, and I just needed to create and release. I knew what I wanted to bring into the world, but if I meticulously planned it out or explained it, it would dampen the creative spark. There was simultaneously a plan, and yet no plan at all.

Now, as I reflect on my Substack journey, I’m ready to streamline and clarify what this series is about. Consider this an introduction: Welcome to Crystals for Creativity! 🪶🐉The Dragon-Star Astrology Series by Feathers & Flow🪶🐉

An Introduction

Aries is all about beginnings, bold action, and moving forward. With the start of this zodiac cycle, I’ve decided to begin a new series called The Dragon-Star Astrology Series.

🐉Why Dragons? I am drawn to how dragons can symbolize inner power and spiritual awakening. The Greek and Latin terms for dragon—drakon and draco, respectively—derive from the verb dérkomai, meaning “to see clearly.” When I’m “in the flow” with dragon energy, it feels like my hidden magic has awakened.

Dragons appear in myths and legends from all over the world, across time, as both benevolent protectors and fearsome predators.

✨Why Astrology? Astrology is a practice used for thousands of years for purposes such as predicting the seasons, divination, and self-understanding.

Astrology is built on the 12 signs of the zodiac, and each sign is rich with associated myths, symbols, and archetypes.

🐉✨In this series, I combine the powerful creative magic of dragons with the ancient wisdom of astrology to explore how to work with dragon energy during each cycle. Each post includes an original piece of intuitive writing inspired by that sign’s dragon. Read on for the first in the series below.

🐲🐦‍🔥The Aries Dragon: The new world creator🐲🐦‍🔥

In Western Astrology, the zodiac is based on the seasons, and it starts at the spring equinox. The 2026 Aries season runs from March 20 to April 19. (This post is late in the season, but just in time for the Aries new moon on April 17!)

Since it’s the first sign of the zodiac, Aries represents the start of something new through raw creative fire.

Aries dragons are catalysts: they get things moving. An Aries dragon says, “I’m not waiting for change to happen. I’m creating it myself.”

Aries dragons can be impulsive and destructive—fire energy meets the warrior archetype. When working with Aries dragon energy, it’s helpful to temper these traits with discernment, using destruction only when it clears the path for a new beginning. The best Aries dragons know when restraint is the greater strength. (See my story below for an example.)

In Find Your Cosmic Calling, Natalie Walstein writes of Aries, “They will want to choose a path where they can continuously be innovating, but ideally in a conscious manner where they are not leaving an endless stream of burnt down or half-baked ideas in their wake.”

Working with this dragon is like playing with fire: incredibly powerful in both its destructive and creative properties.

Now, for my original myth…

🐲🐦‍🔥The Rise of the Dragons🐲🐦‍🔥

~~Prologue~~

Long ago, the kingdom known as Terragonis was a thriving land of wonder and abundance. Color lived everywhere—rainbow-hued brick and stucco rowhomes, murals painted across the sidewalks, and peonies peeking from hidden courtyards. The smell of baking bread and freshly roasted coffee wafted through the streets by morning, and the tantalizing aroma of sizzling steaks and rich pasta filled the evening air. Laughter echoed. The citizens were happy. Magic was alive.

But in time, some grew greedy. It didn’t happen overnight. A handful of people learned how to gather Terragonis’s soft magic for their own use. They kept it close, hoarded it like treasure, and manipulated it for their own gain. They became powerful. They took control of the throne and gave themselves fancy titles. They spoke of the virtues of hard work and obedience, and warned of the dangers of harnessing magical powers.

So magic faded from the kingdom. Now, everything has a purpose. It’s neat, ordered, and logical. The streets are dull and gray. People shuffle from task to task, completing chores mindlessly. This is how it is supposed to be, they tell themselves.

Meanwhile, in the gilded castle that towers above monotone streets, the king and his consorts gather in a lavish dining hall, sipping from silver goblets. Golden platters overflow with foods no one sees beyond the palace. They laugh indulgently while they discuss the ‘simple-minded’ common folk.

But magic didn’t vanish; it has only dimmed. It lingers as a memory. It shows up in dreams. It whispers on the wind. It flickers in the candlelight and casts shadows that tell of times past. It waits patiently for people to remember. To listen. To see. To notice.

In time, the dreams become more vivid, the whispers louder, the lights brighter, the stories in the shadows unmistakable. People begin to remember. Magic stirs in their bones. They do not know when the magic will return in full, only that it is coming. So secretly, they begin to prepare for the return of magic. They prepare for the force behind that magic:

Dragons.

~~The Return~~

After years of quiet preparation, the day comes. In a temple older than the kingdom itself, someone strikes a gong.

The gong bellows low. The sound thrums through city streets, bounces off cobblestone, passes through thick stone fortifications, and carries into the world beyond, clear to the edge of it.

~~~Wa-aaa-wow wa-aaa-wow wow~~~~~~Wa-aaa-wow wa-aaa-wow wow~~~

It is a call. An awakening. An activation.

The people are ready. Many seek temporary shelter, knowing that when the time comes, they will join the dragons.

Just a brief moment after the strike, an answer arrives.

Dragons.

One by one, they rise into the sky. The air fills with the steady drumbeat of wings.

Thousands ascend from the shadows. The sky shimmers in scales of vibrant red, blazing orange, golden yellow, dark onyx, and smoky silver-gray.

They are the flame-keepers. The legend-makers. They are creation. They are the beginning of a new world.

They’re headed straight for Terragonis Castle.

The drumbeat of wings intensifies as the dragons gather in formation, flying in unison across the lands with fire in their hearts and visions of gold in their serpentine eyes.

~~Da-da-dummm, da-da-dummm, da-da-dummm~~Da-da-dummm, da-da-dummm~~

Land-archers launch their arrows skyward, but the arrows bounce off the scales in vain. (A feeble attempt by man to stop the inevitable.)

!!The dragons are coming!!

The castle readies its weapons.

Stationed atop siege towers, crews of soldiers load massive ballistas. They pivot… aim… and fire. The cross-bolts shoot through the air, their shining steel tips imbued with a poison capable of killing dragons. As if they knew this day would come.

The dragons maneuver to avoid the cross-bolts, except one golden dragon, who plummets to the ground. It’s a kill shot.

The surviving dragons open their massive jowls and ROAR in unison.

((((((((((((The earth trembles. The castle walls begin to crumble.)))))))))))

Silver-scaled dragons swoop low and grasp any citizens who remain outside in their talons, lifting them into the sky and carrying them toward distant mountains, to safety. This is not the time for innocents to die. This is a revolution for the people, not against them.

This is the time to dismantle the existing paradigms and build anew.

A horde of crimson-scaled dragons blasts torrents of flames at the ballistas. The stench of sulfur and ash permeates the air.

Hundreds of dragons land, shaking the earth like thunder. Warriors rush forward, daggers sheathed and swords raised. A massive orange-scaled dragon narrows its eyes and huffs out a hot breath. A warning: Don’t come any closer.

Some warriors stop in their tracks, and some choose to retreat. Some continue their charge. Giant teeth snap at empty air. One more warning. Don’t. Come. Closer.

The warriors halt. All but one. The fighter thrusts forward, silver sword aimed right at a dragon’s throat. But he doesn’t have time to strike. Talons snatch him up, and a sword clatters to the ground.

The remaining fighters drop their weapons.

The kingdom surrenders.

The dragons ROAR again.

As the thunderous echoes subside, cheers arise. The citizens emerge from shelter. They know what to do next. They have prepared for this very moment. Many people ready their stances in a lunge, then run… straight toward the massive dragons. Then… they leap… right onto them and climb, gripping the scales with calloused hands, muscles rippling as they ascend. Finally, they reach the dragons’ backs—ready to ride.

The first wave takes off.

As they lift off, the remaining dragons drop as low as they can to the ground, their long tails providing a ramp for the citizens of Terragonis to ascend.

The second wave takes off.

The remaining dragons, one by one, ascend and pick up any remaining citizens in their claws, careful not to grip too tightly.

The third wave takes off.

They fly for what feels like eternity—and yet no time at all. The people see fog-tipped mountains pass by in a blur. They watch massive ocean waves crash in the depths below. The universe passes by them as kaleidoscopic imagery. It’s like a dream.

And when it’s over, they land where they began…

Except Terragonis is different now…

Magic has returned.

“You have been asleep for a long, long time,” whispers a mysterious, yet oddly familiar, voice.

One of the dragon’s heavy eyelids cracks open, revealing a gold-amber flecked iris. He blinks, then he snorts in protest, a puff of steam emerging from his nostrils.

“You must wake; it is almost time,” persists the voice.

The dragon growls a response, a deep rumble that rattles the ground and sends several rocks tumbling. One such rock hits the dragon’s head and smashes in two on impact with the hard black scales. The dragon huffs in annoyance, more steam flaring from his nostrils, but he opens his other eye. He yawns, his massive jowls opening wide, releasing gray-black smoke into the cave. The atmosphere is now thick and hazy.

He stretches out. His talons screech against a quartz crystal—cracking the gem’s shimmery surface.

“You have slept, and now you wake. You are here not to destroy, but to create,” the voice advises the dragon.

But the dragon, agitated from being woken, does not listen. He opens his mouth again, and this time he breathes out white-hot incinerating flames. The fire blasts the long journey all the way to the entrance, illuminating the cave's open mouth with a blaze of glory.

“Are you done now?” the voice asks.

The dragon chuffs but nods. He is awake. He is ready. He crawls his way through the smoky quartz cavern.

He emerges onto a cliffside precipice and surveys the kingdom below. It is in a state of ruin, as if a massive horde of dragons passed through a short time ago and decimated the land. The rubble from collapsed buildings still smolders. What were once roads are now black veins of ash. The once rolling green hills are soot-charred, and there is a faint glow in some places where fire lingers. The dragon looks to the horizon, which shimmers with the smallest promise of hope. Silhouetted against the sun, the figures of survivors gather and move with measured purpose. Some clear debris into piles, and others construct crude shelters from scavenged materials. They are already rebuilding.

“Remember, great one. Your fire is not a weapon but an alchemical tool. Your time spent in hibernation has prepared you for this time,” says the voice from before, emerging as a cloaked figure beside the dragon. “It is time to create a new world.”

Beneath the dragon’s hide, power thrums, and the dragon shudders with the sudden shock of it. The cloaked figure places a steadying hand on the dragon’s flank. At the moment of contact, the dragon’s scales begin to shimmer iridescently. Colors ripple across and slide into one another—sapphire colliding with emerald colliding with gold colliding with copper—until the dragon is glowing with prismatic light.

An ancient knowing in the dragon awakens.

The dragon lowers to its haunches and nods toward the cloaked figure. Slowly, carefully, the figure begins the climb onto the dragon’s back. As the figure mounts, they too begin to pulsate with prismatic energy, as if their energy is fusing with the dragon’s. As if they are becoming one entity, dragon and rider. As if this was destiny.

When the figure reaches the peak and has a firm grasp on the scaled ridge of the dragon’s back, the dragon knows instinctively what to do next.

He spreads his wings and takes flight. He opens his mouth and unleashes a prismatic flame of light.

But the land beneath the blaze does not burn. Instead, it glows, glitters, and undulates in the same pulsating energy that encompasses the dragon and rider.

This is not the fire of destruction, but of creation. The lands transform, as if touched by a magical force—buildings resurrect, streets reconfigure, flowers bloom.

With the force of the flight and fire, the dragon rider’s hood is blown back, revealing their face.

It is you. The one who wakes the dragon. The catalyst for change. The dragon rider. The creator of a new world. It has always been you.

There is a shift happening. We are, collectively, at the threshold of a new beginning. A new timeline. Society is up in flames. Old systems are crumbling. Illusions are being exposed for the falsehoods they are. Old paradigms are breaking down.

And your soul is calling you to wake up. It’s time merge the power of the wise oracle with the powerful dragon to create a new world.

It’s been a while. I didn’t plan to take such a long Substack hiatus, but I had a deep soul need to rest. To hibernate. To prepare for what is to come.

I spent several months in a cozy hermit phase. During this time, dragon symbols kept showing up in my life. 🐲I finished a puzzle of Smaug from LOTR. 🐲I finally read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame (still struggling with Onyx Storm…). 🐲I found a cool bookmark at a cafe of a dragon (it literally jumped out at me and fell at my feet).

Now, dragon syncronicities are not incredibly surprising, as I resonate strongly with dragons/dragon energy (and even have a dragon altar). What seemed interesting to me was that they were showing up during this time of rest, because to me, dragons symbolize my inner power and magic.

And maybe that was the point. A sleeping dragon cultivates its reservoir of power. When it wakes, it may be a little groggy at first, but as it crawls out of the cave and meets with the wise hermit, magic is unleashed. ✨

I’m not sure exactly what is to come. It’s been almost a year since launching my Substack, and while it’s been a slower creative journey than I initially planned, I know I’m headed in the right direction. The dragon is waking up and ready to create.

through brambles and brush, under a canopy of looming trees.

An antique key, its designs swirling and intricate.

You snatch the silver treasure, and you pivot, but

its surface marred with scratches, and in the center is a tarnished brass knocker.

The key you have found is not to the door from before,

but it will open this new door, and that’s your only way forward.
