Plus Culture Con, the Klay Thompson and Megan Thee Stallion breakup, and a full breakdown of what Foundational Black American (FBA) ideology actually means.

Intergenerational Reconciliation

I was in the club last weekend and remembered that I’m not interested in participating in youth culture. In short, I’m old. Yes, my back hurts, my knees aren’t as nimble, I like to sit down, and all the other truths about aging. This refusal to participate is not a rejection of younger generations, but I see why your aunt wants to see you do that lil dance you be doing. I’m entertained and fascinated by the evolution of a culture I helped create.

Imagine for a moment if non-participation in youth culture granted you access to another club. A gigantic space with sections bordered and frozen in time so that other people like you could stay in the culture that they helped create and helped create them. You got ya tall Tee kniggas over here, you got your 90s R&B girls over there, and we can’t forget my kniggas watching a 24/7 Martin marathon in the corner. It may take you a second to realize, but this group of multi-generational people is now your peers. This is the “grown” they were telling you about when you were kids.

When you start to examine your peers, you realize that this space is nostalgic but not harmonious. The new kids are asking the older generation about the age of R. Kelly’s first wife while they ask the generation older than them about the age of Marvin Gaye’s wife while that even older generation does the math on how old grandpa was when he married his significantly younger wife. There are parents and children engaging in Cold War because a school-to-prison pipeline convinced both generations they were more troubling than intelligent. There are modern radicals who don’t believe Harriet Tubman existed, accosting the sit-in students about the quality of desegregated food. This space is not peaceful.

The BeMo Randi B Show is an attempt to reconcile the chaos between generations. BeMo is a multi-hyphenate Millennial. Randi B is Gen X disruptive. Sometimes they agree. Sometimes they question each other’s sanity. That’s not the point. Two generations break a tradition of turmoil to seek understanding and a path forward.

For as long as I can remember, I have been involved in some sort of debate. For just as long, I’ve also had the understanding that I have never really convinced anyone of anything. At best, I can present subjective evidence to lead you towards a desired conclusion. You know what they say. You can lead a horse to water, you can’t make the horse drink, but you can drown it. The BeMo Randi B Show is the water in either situation.

This is Mood: Bored. A culture-driven memoir show where each episode unpacks five artifacts -- from wines to anime to friendships -- turning personal lists into cultural revelations. Part Antique Roadshow, part Anthony Bourdain. An invitation for viewers to challenge their algorithm by becoming obsessive about their own interests and experiences.

Candace's Substack

My personal Substack

By Candace Carrington

Introducing—Candace Carrington

Candace Carrington is the creator and host of Mood: Bored, a culture-driven memoir series where pop culture becomes personal culture. Each episode begins with a lived moment, unfolds through a curated list of five artifacts, and lands in a reflection on what our tastes say about the world we are living in.

With a background in digital strategy and storytelling, Candace has spent over a decade helping brands translate culture into meaning. Mood: Bored is where she turns that same lens inward. Wines, style muses, friendships, beauty rituals, obsessions. Not as trends, but as evidence of how people shape identity, find belonging, and make sense of change.

Her work sits at the intersection of intimacy and analysis, inviting viewers to slow down, notice what they love, and question what the algorithm has taught them to want. Mood: Bored is not about having the right taste. It is about paying attention to your own.

Founder’s Note

If you’ve ever stared into a diamond to watch how colors are created from a seemingly clear object, then you understand what I mean. Candace is a gem. She is precious, rare, and captures light in a way that it’s hard to look away.

I’ve known Candace since the moment I started my media journey in DC’s incubation program called 202Creates. We were like the first class of X-Men but for a newly established breed of entrepreneurs and dreamers. Since our first conversation, every word that we have spoken to each other feels like the continuation of a podcast episode or a sitcom with 7 layers of lore. When I approached Candace to start a show on the SEEN’T Network, the only things I really wanted were for other people to join the conversation and see the light that I see.

I’m a literal man, and I believe we executed this literally. As you watch Mood: Bored, understand that Candace is talking to you. These aren’t just stories; the conversation between you and her is intentional from the script to the production. There are no in-studio audience members. There is no off-camera producer prompting questions. There isn’t even a teleprompter. It’s just you and Candace. The light in her eyes is more than metaphorical. I used a specific lighting technique I saw from Casablanca that makes it look like there are actual lights in her eyes.

Here’s how I know the show is great. It goes beyond watching every episode, attending the IRL events, or making my own versions of Mood: Bored. I’m the producer, and I know some bias keeps you from believing me. I want you to go watch the Beauty episode where Candace talks about her top 5 makeup routines. As a man, even when we were recording, the elements of the makeup routine absolutely lost me. I don’t know the technical difference between a 5-minute beat and a full beat. I still don’t. However, Candace was able to tell this story of her beauty and its origin in a way that I apply her lessons to my life. And it has nothing to do with makeup. Between you and me, this is not one of Candace’s favorite episodes, which speaks volumes to the impact of that episode and the rest of the series.

Below you’ll see all the TV guide information, pictures, and the pilot episode, but here’s why you should really watch. Especially if you are still reading this. Mood: Bored will break you away from the digital systems that guess what you like based on how you’ve interacted with that digital system. This algorithm doesn’t know why you like the smell of dollar store cocoa butter or when you figured out your body type. It just tries to sell you lotion and drop-shipped generic clothing. It’s time to restore your memory and reclaim your taste.

We build television for the people who built the culture. Community ownership. Creator IP retention. Free studio access for the people who make the work.

If people feel invisible, we see people.

Be the reason we’re SEEN’T. Pledge today.

For the longest time, I knew my invisibility was because I was a dark-skinned Black man with locs and an anti-code-switching disposition. I am not wrong; however, I have learned a different perspective. The most impactful lesson from my experience in the Black Justice Fellowship is a concept called Targeted Universalism by john a. powell. This ideology centralizes the problem and not those who experience the problem. Simply, if I’m experiencing invisibility, there’s a 99% chance you are also experiencing invisibility. Targeted Universalism ensures that the folks affected by the problem aren’t made enemies in resolving the problem. In other words, it’s not your fault that I feel invisible.

The problem is systemic invisibility or an infrastructure designed to neutralize culture, corporatize truth, and miseducate communities not through active oppression but through passive disregard. Voices are not made silent but made invisible. This systemic invisibility is held up by at least 3 pillars.

Pillar #1: Accepted Censorship

There is language we use on social media so that algorithms won't suppress our posts. Coincidentally, there are also words like this for federal funding. We accept these limitations on language to navigate barriers that won’t fully eliminate our expression. On social media, this means transforming the language of death to its passive synonym, unalive, or neutralizing the indictment of pedophile to a mundane document for Federal Funding; words like women/female and equity are recommended to be changed to the systemic normative of humans and anecdotal imbalance. You CAN say these words, but at what cost? Suppression.

Pillar #2- Local ain’t really local

Up to 85% of DMV-based media is owned and produced by non-local corporations. The national average for major metropolitan areas is 40%. Companies like Sinclair, Comcast, and Nexstar Media are dominating the creation of narratives that represent an area, a culture, and a people. Organizations like the Washington Informer, 51st News, NUNAR Magazine, and independent journalist Phil Lewis are the beacons of sovereign media outlets whose editors still walk the streets and casually reside in the area. How could you be seen by people who don’t ride your metro, don’t dance to your slow bounce, and don’t feel the same swamp winds as you?

Pillar #3 -Defunded Standard

What raised you is no longer the agreed-upon standard. Regardless of your politics, the United States government declared, through its defunding of public media, that the broadcast programming that raised generations under a unified moral, ethical, and journalistic standard is no longer worth investment from all Americans. The support for public media was split between taxes, corporate funders, and donors who believed and accepted the practices to fortify a standard. Removing the mandate indicates that our government no longer prioritizes objectivity or any ethical underwriting when it comes to broadcasting information to its public. In combination with the weaponization of the FCC, where are the institutions that have the ability to tell our stories or represent our perspectives with honesty and courage? They still exist. Your local PBS and NPR affiliates are still on-air, but do they have the resources to create the next generation of community voices? No.

So what does that leave us with? A system that, instead of silencing voices, makes these voices invisible. Systemic Invisibility. Therefore, the solution is simple.

Here’s what I mean. This is Steel.

You can kind of see, but Steel is face-tatted, Gehri curled, and earning of the name Steel. Steel is easily stereotyped. Easily overlooked. Easily made invisible. What you don’t see is that Steel is an abstract artist, a brilliant carpenter, and an emotionally available boyfriend. I didn’t know that until our interview for A Few Mo’ Minutes, a show specifically produced for seeing community members. So a week later when I show him his headshot, he pauses, and he looks. He says to me, “Outside of a job, this is my first real headshot.” Two Black men on the verge of weeping over simply being seen.

How do we scale this beyond Steel, beyond myself? I did some research and some math and came across a very interesting stat. 27 listeners per episode for 12 weeks is 324 listeners. This parasocialized audience of 324 has 4x the engagement rate as traditional advertising methods. According to the 3.5 rule, this crowd of 324 people could influence a crowd as large as 9,000 people. In terms that we can measure, 27 listeners per week in real life is an indication of niche content that binds communities. 12 consistent weeks of distribution is an indication of infrastructure for consistent production. A crowd as large as 9,000 is easily the buying population of retail-based small businesses in the DMV, indicating that our “small” audience could sustain a business.

That evolution is SEEN’T; A Community Broadcast Network.

Over the last 9 months, we have produced 5 independent broadcast seasons with 4 shows currently in production and 3 more in pre-production. That’s over 118 episodes across 9 shows. Even with only 5 shows currently being distributed, we have amassed over 4.8 million views; we maintain a 10.4% engagement rate when industry peaks are 3.5%; we have featured 20 DMV residents; and we have secured $13,000 in confirmed sponsorship to stabilize our funding, including the Black Justice Fellowship and a partnership with a local streaming platform. You already know some of these shows, and I can’t wait to introduce you to others.
