Espero que tus estudios de arqueología estén yendo bien. Las ruinas de Europa son algunas de las más interesantes, solo comparables con el antiguo Egipto, sus pirámides, templos y jeroglíficos. Londres en particular, y París, son tesoros que esconden múltiples secretos bajo la retícula urbana de lo que alguna vez fueron las dos ciudades más importantes del continente, cuya rivalidad nunca fue superada más que por el declive que posó su permanente sombra apagando su esplendor y luminosidad; son la Pompeya y Herculano de nuestro tiempo. Es una lástima que el encanto de acuarela que se siente al ver imponentes edificios del pasado envueltos en enredaderas, sea en realidad la penumbra que escapa de ojos vidriosos y apagados, estáticos y vacíos. Pero la enfermedad del ciclo civilizatorio, tal y como la artritis reumatoide que le llega a tantos en la vejez, también invadió esas culturas.

Ten cuidado cuando te desplaces por las calles que aún están habitadas. Evita los callejones cerrados y asegúrate de ir con un intérprete para que siempre estés al tanto de la situación y no te engañen, porque lo único en ruinas no es la estructura física, sino la moral, y en esos casos el instinto de supervivencia reemplaza toda forma de decencia cuando se trata de fuereños y extranjeros, a quienes se ve como una oportunidad para extraer algún beneficio pasajero.

Con respecto a tus pregunta, es difícil saber en estos momentos cuáles fueron las causas de la caída de la civilización europea, especialmente la de las islas británicas, porque la mayoría de los archivos relacionados con el periodo que inicia el tercer milenio estaban contenidos en medios cuya longevidad era muy inferior, a diferencia de la piedra, el papel o el pergamino. Podría contarte historias “detalladas” de la Edad Media y de hasta finales del siglo XX, pero la paulatina degradación de los sustratos de almacenamiento que vinieron luego, hacen imposible la reconstrucción del pasado en esa etapa. Sin embargo, podemos reconstituir una imagen aproximándonos por el siglo XVIII y terminando en los grandes depósitos de basura que se encuentran por todo el mundo, y que son de gran tamaño y extensión en ese continente. Sabemos con certeza por la poca cantidad de papel, después de ciertas fechas, que por ejemplo, las personas dejaron de leer alrededor del año 2007, y que una forma de comunicación simbólica basada en múltiples caras con gestos y diversos objetos asociados, reemplazó en gran medida la palabra escrita con caracteres alfabéticos y letras como los que estoy usando para esta carta; nosotros practicamos la lectura y la escritura, ya caídas en desuso.

Dos décadas después, alrededor del año 2030, las personas fueron perdiendo la capacidad de interacción con otros individuos y la sociedad comenzó un proceso de declive demográfico que ya traía una tendencia negativa desde la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Eso lo conocemos porque hay registros escritos esporádicos de algunos académicos y sabios de la época que consignaron sus observaciones en libros de papel, porque la mayor parte de la producción se desplazó a lo que conocemos como libros electrónicos, una tecnología perdida hace más de 400 años.

Luego de desvanecerse las capacidades de lectura y de interacción, el declive demográfico se intensificó de tal manera que grandes áreas de la ciencia y la tecnología desaparecieron por falta de nuevos practicantes, y por eso debo escribirte en este costoso papel de algodón, puesto que para los mensajes electrónicos que eran posibles al inicio del milenio, ya no contamos con la tecnología; los centros de distribución de la misma son ahora reliquias de museo que algunos, erróneamente, atribuyen a extraterrestres, ya que no imaginan posible que seres humanos hace apenas unos cuantos siglos pudieran comprender tan sofisticados mecanismos y sistemas. La gran pandemia del 2073 terminó de acabar con los pocos talleres en los que se practicaban algunas de estas artes, y se reparaban y mantenían esas tecnologías, pero no estamos seguros si esa fue la causa última del desplome.

Algunos autores que han hecho investigación de textos médicos y filosóficos europeos de los siglos XVIII, XIX y XX, han aventurado algunas hipótesis sobre las causas estructurales del declive y la decadencia de Europa, que ahora se parece mucho a las ruinas Incas del Perú, rodeadas de misterio y meteorizadas por el tiempo. De todas esas hipótesis hay una que me convence más que las demás –aunque no por ello creo que esté libre de vacíos enormes– y es la siguiente: al parecer, en el siglo XV se da una revolución científica y artística que se extiende hasta el siglo XVI, y se conoce como el Renacimiento; en ella, se producen grandes obras de arte y hay una proliferación de ideas que conducen luego a un periodo conocido como la Ilustración.

De ambos tenemos muy pocas pruebas, porque los museos de Europa que albergaban las obras de arte del Renacimiento fueron sistemáticamente saqueados y sus obras condenadas como herejía, y en Francia, esa enorme campiña con cicatrices imborrables de la historia, las bibliotecas fueron arrasadas por grandes incendios; en algunos casos, provocados, en otros, espontáneos porque no había nadie para cuidar de los edificios y los documentos que contenían. No obstante, tenemos una imagen muy trágica de la Ilustración, con unos periodos llenos de violencia, guerras y traumas, debido a las luchas de poder que sucedieron, mas nunca podremos saber si los rumores sobre la debacle civilizatoria de ese país durante el siglo XVIII, es cierta o no, y por los rastros que todavía quedan, no se puede asegurar de forma concluyente.

Del siglo XIX sabemos que fue de expansión. La cultura europea estuvo presente en casi todos los rincones del globo, pero después del inicio del siglo XX su influencia se encoge hasta convertirse en nota de pie de página y curiosidad, de nuevo, no sabemos mucho, excepto por algunos textos de historiadores que relatan guerras fantásticas, con ejércitos gigantescos acompañados de máquinas capaces de arrasar ciudades enteras y bolas de fuego que, arrojadas por artefactos voladores, destruyeron ciudades enteras; aunque igual que Homero con la Guerra de Troya, la cual nunca sabremos si fue cierta, dichas guerras son un mito, quizá más una metáfora del pasado turbulento en el que ebullen las ideas y se crean los nuevos hombres. Sin embargo, a pesar de todo esto, si asumimos la grandiosidad del Renacimiento, la irracionalidad de la Ilustración francesa, las grandes guerras mecanizadas del siglo XX y la tecnología que precedió a nuestro periodo de oscuridad actual, podríamos decir que los hombres de dicha época fueron perdiendo la razón, se ensimismaron y, como en el mito griego, se enamoraron de su imagen hasta ahogarse en la fantasía. Creemos que sus mentes se disociaron completamente y esto conllevó una lenta, pero segura, disolución de los finos vínculos que conforman una sociedad, primero a nivel individual. Las ciudades se hicieron más grandes y más compartimentadas, encogiendo al individuo hasta convertirlo en un animal diminuto de esos que puedes ver con tu microscopio óptico. Occidente regresó a la sopa primordial, no sin antes, dejarnos el esqueleto de su mente en estas ruinas que tú ahora estudias con tanta curiosidad e interés; empero, tal y como el registro fósil de los seres vivos de hace millones de años no pueden hablarnos porque la información ha sido reemplazada por una forma pétrea inanimada, el cuerpo que una vez fue es ahora su propia tumba con epitafios mudos.

Lamento no poder ser de más ayuda. Aquí, en estas montañas aisladas, no contamos con la capacidad para traducir los documentos de los que disponemos. Nuestros anaqueles están llenos de libros en idiomas con símbolos cuyos hablantes se extinguieron, y la criptografía toma tiempo; ojalá contáramos con una mítica piedra de Rosetta, porque los diccionarios de traducción se trasladaron a formatos contenidos y manejados por esas reliquias de museo que ya te mencioné.

Espero que te vaya muy bien. No se te olvide que debes tomar el velero de regreso en seis meses si quieres evitar los huracanes del Caribe: la navegación no es muy confiable y puedes terminar a cientos de kilómetros de tu destino, además de que los relojes mecánicos no son tan precisos como los antiguos electrónicos que se regían por las estrellas artificiales que, en otra época distante del pasado, lográbamos colocar sobre nuestras cabezas en el firmamento.

P.D: Tu madre me pide que te diga por favor le traigas algún recuerdo de París o Londres. Aunque yo le insisto que allá ya no hay nada que valga la pena, posiblemente un viejo lienzo de los que sobrevivieron de algún museo para que lo colguemos aquí –a lo mejor y resulta que es un artilugio con valor histórico–. En la zona donde se ubicaba el Museo del Louvre, que no te debe quedar lejos de las excavaciones, parece que hay un mercadillo donde los saqueadores venden lo que encuentran bajo las ruinas.

Content in search of a new framework, an active principle in search of a new excipient.

Introduction

First, let me clarify that this essay is not about the impending disappearance of Christianity or the total dissolution of the faith in all its variants; this is about a process that has previously occurred many times in history. Religions change, mutate, and the aesthetics of the rites adopt new forms or vanish; the image of God, sometimes takes the form of animals, sometimes looks like men.

What is actually important is the content, because the framework wears out, gets tired and sometimes it only follows fads. Think of religion as a library, the books remain, but after centuries, the building needs more than a simple repair, it needs to be replaced; and in that transit, from the old building to the new building, the people in charge lose some books, burn the documents they think are no longer useful, a complete renovation takes place, and even some members of the old guard file their retirement documents, leaving some room for the new guys, that in many cases have not even been born yet.

The New Building Is Not The Old Cathedral

Christianism, emphasis on the “ism”, is going through that phase, the ideological framework is tired, the main variants: Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant, look like they can’t find answers to produce an effective response to their main competitor: Scientism, that in turn is already failing strepitously when interrogated about its limits and assumptions, especially its catastrophic attempt and pretension to replace not only Christianism, but other religions and religious beliefs around the world, with a very poorly conceived materialism as an answer for our symbolic needs; notice that I don’t use the word metaphysical, because the problem, I think, is not theological, is not about a new cover for the old book or rephrasing what has been discussed ad nauseam, is not about the great beyond, heaven, paradise or hell, or talking to St. Peter at the pearly gates, or any other image of that sort.

The issue is that religion, specifically Christianism, failed the test of science, but science, in turn, failed the test of religion. Both concepts collided at the end of the Black Plague; cynicism, skepticism and mutual distrust gave way to a world without dialogue, where both parties have fought against each other, many times through proxies in universities, governments and with weapons in innumerable battlefields. There have been moments of truce, but the distrust has never gone away; it lingers like the nasty stench of a furtive fart at a state dinner, where everybody must laugh while reaching for the dagger to defend their honor, should the other side dare to levy an accusation.

Christianism did not survive science, the ideological framework is for a world where people don’t know and understand what fire is; and whose unfortunate response to try to solve the issues of the disillusion with the ideological shortcomings, was to attack science with straight lies told by the priests and the church—Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant— justifying their behavior, stating that it was for the greater good; while science, on the other hand, tried fill the gap, by reducing reality to a pile of material achievements forming the forbidden mountain that nobody, even the priests in lab coats guarding it, were authorized to question.

The Hallmark of Failure

But what about the revival and the young cohorts going back to church on Sundays, and praying, and the millions filling up stadiums to listen to some mega-church pastor? I have a very simple answer: Demographics. If there is one telling indicator that the framework has failed is this, because the entire world, not only the Western culture, but even sub-Saharan Africa, is going to be reduced to pre-industrial levels of population. Christianity’s framework will shatter, this time is not going to be a simple schism, fruit of some power struggle inside the ecclesiastical structures, followed by a grand and solemn statement; this time, the job and the task to compile a new code is going to be titanic, because we are going to have to integrate two apparently incompatible elements.

Those that try an ideological emulsion; mixing one substance with the other, attempting to surround the microdroplets of the Christian myth with science, will fail, it already backfired spectacularly; and those that try the opposite will also fail, because the symbol, the Christian symbol will corrupt and suffocate the scientific spirit as it has done before during the Dark Ages, turning it into a lobotomized servant of the elite priesthood.

The New Framework

It must not fall into the gnostic trap, into the inverse of the opposites, in an attempt to create a new substance out of raw materials whose intrinsic characteristics are not well understood by the charlatans peddling mystical cures. Science and religion are to be mixed in a way similar to salt, made by two elements that by themselves are very toxic for human beings, but when combined, form an essential molecule for our bodies and minds. This new framework is a task for the post-demographic collapse generation and for those individuals capable of understanding that a myth is as real and fundamental for our physical well-being as is reason as a tool to transcend ignorance and foolishness to elevate our souls.

Mary, Susan and Barbara, kept coming back to the old factory gate where they used to meet with their boyfriends, later husbands before the war, the factory is now closed, it produced stampings, but was later converted to produce munitions during the war. Their husbands died fighting in Europe and Japan, none came back, they were never found, MIA as they say.

They received a pension and spend their days talking to each other, they are neighbors, their houses form a triangle, with Barbara‘s house across from Mary‘s , on the same sidewalk, two houses down the street from Susan´s. They dress up and meet at the gate, and wait, they never talk or pray, they just stand in there, under the rusty gate, between sundown and the stars.

After that, they cross the street, sit at the diner, have coffee and a snack, talk and then go home. They do this from Monday to Friday, each week and on Christmas eve, they break with the tradition and hug each other under the gate, before going back home. They never married again, never had children.

Barbara has a brother who dated Susan for a while, but then he got promoted and moved to a different city, where he found somebody else. Mary has never even tried again. All the people in town know there are the widows of the heroes, and they are respected; the war left scars everywhere, their husbands were not the only men that never came back, so nobody in town says anything about their behavior, for the people, is just a way to cope with a silent chronic pain that can‘t find relief.

The first to pass away was Susan, she was forty, then Mary and then Barbara, they never said anything to anyone outside of their other two friends about their experience, nobody knew exactly why they stood at the gate for so many years, three at first, then two, and then one until they vanished.

Entidad Política Sin Futuro

De todas las fuerzas a las que una sociedad se puede resistir, el destino demográfico es quizá la única inevitable, y para Colombia, que en la actualidad presenta una tasa de fertilidad menor a la de Japón y acelerandose hacia el fondo, el resultado está cantado.

El Escenario

Hace unos dias, en una entrevista para el Hoover Institution de la Universidad de Stanford, en California, Estados Unidos; el demógrafo español Jesús Fernández-Villaverde1, académico de la Universidad de Pensilvania; contó como los países de ingresos medios y bajos, estaban presentando una tasa muy baja de fertilidad y que además se estaba acelerando. En el artículo académico Terra Incognita: La economía de un mundo cada vez más pequeño2, junto con Patrick Norrick3, estudiante de primer año de doctorado en la Universidad del Noroeste, hacen un análisis y muestran las cifras de fertilidad para muchos paises y hablan de las posibles causas. De todas estas, me llamó la atención el caso de Colombia, en donde esta ha bajado un 35% en los últimos 10 años4, llegando a estar por debajo de la de Japón, actualmente en 1.145, que junto con Corea del Sur en un 0.806, son quizá los casos mejor conocidos del fenómeno de la caida de la natalidad.

Colombia, según los datos recolectados por Fernandez-Villaverde y Norrick, está en una tasa 1.01 hijos por mujer7, de modo que la población proyectada a 90 años (3 generaciones) es la siguente, incluyendo el momentum, es decir la inercia poblacional8. Para una población actual reportada por el DANE, de 53.399.171 habitantes9, la serie es así:

Estos números, corresponden al escenario en el que la TTF permanece constante, pero como hemos visto en los ultimos 10 años, puede reducirse aun más, haciendo estas proyecciones un poco optimistas.

Las implicaciones son de todo tipo, las más inmediatas tienen que ver con pensiones y servicios sociales, el SISBEN, subsidios, etc. Pero tambien son de seguridad y la que me parece más interesante, la integridad territorial. Digo la más interesante, porque mi apreciación y opinión general sobre el proyecto republicano de Colombia, es que ha sido un absoluto fracaso; las aspiraciones de desarrollo resultaron pura fantasía, debido a los medios disponibles dentro del marco institucional, y cada vez que se les hizo una revisión, las cosas empeoraron, como en 1886 y 1991.

Puede que haya carreteras, hospitales e infraestructura, pero al mismo tiempo, esos servicios y sus sistemas complementarios solo los disfruta un reducido número de privilegiados a expensas de los demás, que aunque obligados a contribuir, ya sea prestando servicio militar o pagando el IVA en cada cosa que compran -si tienen con que comprar- no reciben ni de lejos el bien básico que debe estar disponible PARA TODOS en cualquier sociedad desarrollada y civilizada: Tranquilidad y libertad para crear una vida sin intromisiones o violencia de parte del estado.

Con la población de Colombia en proceso de envejecimiento, se van a dar varios fenómenos, uno de ellos es que el ejercito se va a reducir desproporcionadamente con respecto al total de la población, simplemente porque la estructura de edad no se va a corresponder con la rigidez de la pirámide de edades que demanda una estructura militar.

Actualmente, las Fuerzas Militares (FF.MM) de Colombia, cuentan con un total aproximado de alrededor de 181.000 miembros (2025)10, en función de la siguiente estructura en la pirámide demográfica:

Pero si miramos la población proyectada, dada la actual TTF, nos damos cuenta de que la base se encoge y la cantidad de hombres en edad militar se reduce. Si para el 2026, tenemos un porcentaje total de la población del 0.34% en las FF.MM, para el 2116, este será solo del 0.28%. Es decir, no solo vamos a tener una reducción en numero total de miembros, sino en porcentaje por la estructura de edades.

La conclusión no es muy dificil: si con la actual cantidad de miembros de las FF.MM tenemos problemas para cubrir el territorio de Colombia, cuando seamos una cuarta parte de la población va a ser aun más complejo, y si a eso le sumamos, una población envejecida, la defensa simplemente se hace imposible, esto, si asumimos que la TTF permanece constante, pero creo que se va a reducir.

Lo anterior, es solo un pequeño aspecto de la inmensa cantidad de problemas que se le vienen encima a Colombia, todos ellos relacionados con un sistema inflexible que no permite ninguna adaptación en tiempo real, aunque sea para buscar soluciones de ultimo momento. Pero lo más patético de todo este asunto, es que desperdiciamos todo el siglo XX en las peleas más improductivas posibles, porque al final la discusión sobre la propiedad de la tierra se va a solucionar en favor de la reconcentración, por herencia, abandono o compra, y la infraestructura que nunca se complentó ahi quedará en proyecto, pero más problemático aun, va a ser cuando los servicios básicos se queden sin financiación, e igual que las FF.MM y la policía, sin personal para operarlos.

Qué va a ser de los acueductos veredales, o de las grandes hidroeléctricas? Algunos piensan, de manera ingenua, que la reducción de la poblacion va a reconcentrar la riqueza, y que la gente que hoy no consume esos servicios de forma directa o indirecta, va a subsanar la demanda por caida en la población con aumento per cápita, pero si algo hemos visto en Colombia, es que el mal crónico de la pobreza solo va a empeorar, es mi opinión, y si a algun genio, se le ocurre profundizar la solución de la redistribución, le tengo que mencionar, que la caida de la natalidad fue aun más profunda en los países socialistas, como detallan Fernández-Villaverde y Norrick en el artículo académico citado.

Qué Hacer y Cómo Prepararse?

Asi como en tiempos de la caida del Imperio Romano, que se da con la abolición formal del título de emperador, allá por el siglo V, e.c; porque los servicios del estado central ya habian decaido, la abolición formal de la República de Colombia, llegará cuando la ausencia práctica del estado colombiano, abandone los pequeños centros urbanos y continue con los más grandes; situación que no es extraña, desde siempre en casi todo el territorio del país. A los que estamos cerca de las ciudades nos tocará formar unidades administrativas locales con poderes que ahora solo estan reservados para el estado central. Justicia penal y defensa, van a ser los primeros. El problema serio, es que en Colombia, ni siquiera en el estado central estas dos facultades se desarrollaron con verdadero sentido de justicia e igualdad, y siempre han sido claramente parcializadas de forma descarada en favor de las élites en el poder, característica de la que han tomado nota bandidos y criminales que aspiran a sustituir el estado en las regiones aplicando los mismos criterios de exclusión.

En el aspecto comercial, al menos, habrá que mantener las carreteras locales y los accesos a los rios, si los hay, asi como cuidarse de proteger las fuentes de energía y los canales de abastecimiento. Antioquia tiene puerto, carbón e hidroeléctricas. Con respecto a las comunicaciones, pues hoy en día existe internet satelital, pero hay que seguir pagándolo, asi que de alguna forma, tener fondos en el extranjero y mantener una cuenta abierta afuera para poder acceder a muchos de los productos, va a ser crítico.

El aspecto monetario es una gran incognita, porque con el Dollar americano debilitándose por los déficits del estado federal, es muy arriesgado proponerlo como depósito seguro de valor en el largo plazo, pero Antioquia y en general Colombia, tienen oro, platino y otros metales que pueden intercambiarse por productos y tecnología, lo malo es que como siempre, las élites se interponen en su explotación, transformación y comercialización.

La integridad territorial de Colombia, no va a ser mejor que la actual, quizá Antioquia sea libre y soberana una vez más, simplemente porque no haya con que pagar un gran ejército que reprima una declaración unilateral de independencia. No será mañana, o la semana que viene, pero dado que ahora el departamento esta conectado con el mar, a diferencia de los inicios del siglo XX, darle la espalda a Bogotá no va a ser tan traumático, aunque personalmente no quisiera que fuera asi, a pesar de la distancia cultural con los habitantes del altiplano y sus ideas sobre administración pública, que tanto daño le han hecho al proyecto republicano colombiano.

En el peor de los casos, el ente político se disuelve y las líneas fronterizas aparecen de forma natural, a veces como accidente geográfico, a veces por diferencias culturales, pero nunca estan ausentes. Colombia, como proyecto, está comandada por personas incapaces de reflexionar y por una población convencida de mentiras de las que no puede escapar a suficiente velocidad como para corregir el rumbo y dar el giro hacia un modelo, que quizá no nos salve del declive demográfico, pero si lo haga más llevadero y nos prepare para la siguiente etapa, por el contrario, creo que se nos viene una epoca traumática y llena de conflictos internos, más peleas políticas y de frustraciones basadas en propaganda y falsedades acumuladas durante el siglo XX, las cuales nunca supimos procesar, y que nos van a costar el país y quizá el territorio entero, que puede llegar a ser tomado por los modernos Pueblos del Mar, como sucedió durante el colapso de la Edad de Bronce en el mediterraneo, que por falta de comercio, produjo una involución cultural hacia los institntos más básicos que empujan a los hombres a buscar en otras tierras, lo que no pueden encontrar en la suya propia, esta vez, no en Egipto, sino en Suramérica, en donde existen todo tipo de recursos, con estados débiles y poblaciones envejecidas y fáciles de conquistar.

...y 100 luchando contra quienes no dejan construir el país.

Hace unos días, Julio César Iglesias entrevistó a Eduardo Pizarro Leongómez, hermano del asesinado Carlos Pizarro Leongómez, líder de la guerrilla M-19; y lo que parecía iba a ser una entrevista más, llena de lugares comunes y argumentos trillados, resultó siendo una gran sorpresa, con admisiones similares a las que se vio obliada a hacer la Asamblea Nacional de Cuba hace unos meses, cuando finalmente tuvieron que aceptar en público lo que ya se sabía en privado desde hace décadas: que el socialismo no funciona. En el caso de Eduardo Pizarro, las revelaciones fueron específicas sobre la izquierda colombiana y la lucha guerrillera, reconociendo que la fundación ideológica es errada, y que la guerrilla no solo no puede llegar al poder por las armas, sino que las razones por las cuales lo han intentado, son falacias que no se sostienen ante la evidencia empírica, dejando sin piso toda la argumentación con la que han sometido al país a décadas de violencia y tragedias, en su intento por forzar a la sociedad colombiana a aceptar un modelo, que desde el principio, estaba completamente equivocado.

Pizarro admitió y habló en la entrevista de los siguientes cinco aspectos principales:

1. Rechazo a las “causas objetivas” de la violencia.

Durante décadas, la guerrilla y por supuesto, la izquierda, han sostenido que el origen del conflicto es la desigualdad, y que mientras esta no se acabe, no habrá paz. Pues sobre este punto, Pizarro admite que el problema no es la desigualdad y que, si así fuera, países como Suiza, donde las diferencias entre los que más tienen y los que menos tienen son enormes, estarian en guerra.

Por supuesto, lo que no explica este señor es que la obsesión que tiene la izquierda con la imposición de la igualdad, es precisamente una de las causas de la violencia; es decir, la izquierda nunca ha entendido o aceptado que forzar a los demás a ser iguales requiere precisamente una enorme cantidad de coerción, como sucedió en el caso de Camboya y los Jemeres Rojos, Vietnam o la misma Cuba, donde el aparato de represión ha sumido en la igualdad de la miseria a los cubanos desde 1959, cuando Fidel entró en La Habana, eso si, los Castro y sus amigos si disfrutan de los privilegios que le niegan a otros.

2. La guerrilla no tiene posibilidades de llegar al poder por las armas

En este punto, finalmente admite lo que se sabe hace tiempo: que, por más que lo intente, la guerrilla no tiene cómo ocupar el territorio, cosa que el gobierno de Colombia tampoco ha querido hacer, por la razón que sea.

3. La presencia de la guerrilla y sus acciones han causado más atraso y pobreza

La presencia y accionar de la guerrilla espantan la inversión y previenen la formación de capital; esencial para aumentar la productividad, el valor agregado y, como consecuencia, los salarios y su poder adquisitivo, circumstancia que golpea especialmente duro a las zonas rurales, donde los colombianos no pueden salir de la pobreza.

4. Lo que queda en el monte son señores de la guerra.

Hay que admitir una cosa: que si el nefasto proceso de paz de Santos con las FARC nos dejó algo, fue el haber eliminado oficialmente a ese grupo, y que lo que queda en el monte, son delincuentes escondidos dentro de un cascarón ideológico vacío y sin contenido alguno; esa es la base argumental que hay que usar para combatir a las “guerrillas”, ahora completamente desprovistas de cualquier barniz político, que quedan expuestas como lo que son y siempre han sido: crimen organizado.

5. Y finalmente, RECHAZA LA VIOLENCIA DE AMBOS LADOS COMO MALA, acabando con la tésis del finado ex-magistrado Carlos Gaviria Díaz.

Esta tésis bastante estúpida y peligrosa se puede observar en un intercambio que tuvieron en público, hace muchísimos años, el ex-magistrado y el ex-comisionado de paz de aquel entonces, Luis Carlos Restrepo. En ese intercambio, se puede oir claramente de qué lado estaba Carlos Gaviria.

Eduardo Pizarro ya puede decir en público lo que ya sabemos hace años, y es que crimen organizado es crimen organizado, sin distinción ideológica, y que no hay que darle tratamiento preferencial a unos sobre otros, porque ambos son malos, celdas, uniformes y carceles en medio de un proceso penal respetuoso de las garantías jurídicas o bolsas y fosas comunes, si se resisten a la aplicacion de la ley, así se combate el crimen.

Conclusiones:

No porque Eduardo Pizarro, de alguna manera, sea el vocero de una izquierda vergonzante e incapaz de admitir sus errores en público, el problema estructural del subdesarrollo de Colombia desaparece, porque la pelea que ha dado origen a todas estas estrategias erradas sigue viva y sus actores todavía están convencidos de sus argumentos. En esta ocasión, los socialistas de estado, es decir, la otra izquierda; vencen ideológicamente a los Internacional-Socialistas: guerrilla y partidos simpatizantes; sin embargo, ello no los convierte automáticamente en la facción que está en lo correcto.

En el ensayo Libertarismo o Promesas y Guerras, publicado en este blog, se detalla muy bien la estructura y origen de dicho conflicto, sus víctimas y las estrategias con las que cada lado ha intentado mantenerse o llegar al poder, pero basta con decir que, por más de 150 años, la lucha y la guerra, ha sido entre los que no dejan construir y los que quieren destruir, cada uno con sus intelectuales y razones, pero ambos completamente equivocados, y cuyo resultado ha sido el estado fallido, atrasado y subdesarrollado que ahora va a entrar en declive demográfico, sin haber llegado nunca a un nivel de riqueza que nos permita superar el período de paulatina contracción económica, que se avecina después del año 2045.

Ambos lados ahora se preparan para proponer opciones de “centro”, ¿Pero centro de qué?, si ambos están completamente equivocados en su concepción del sistema político y la estructuración administrativa de un país, donde hay más de 25 asesinatos por cada 100.000 habitantes, donde la pobreza es del 70% y a los ciudadanos se les divide en castas que eufemisticamente llamamos “estratos”, esa abominación del buenismo que ha formalizado la discriminación social por décadas. Colombia es un país donde los salarios no alcanzan para nada y se persigue al empresario, en donde, a más de 200 años de vida “republicana”, Leticia y otras capitales no tienen carretera para comunicarse con el resto del país, en un error estratégico que crea un problema de seguiridad nacional, que es obvio hasta para el más mediocre de los analistas en defensa.

Encuentro absolutamente esencial y necesario para que el país pueda avanzar, lo que Eduardo Pizarro hizo al aceptar públicamente todos esos errores, porque me da tranquilidad y nos produce una mayor certeza, de que lo que hemos estado promoviendo en Antioquia Libre y Soberana todos estos años, es lo correcto: que la opción federal, que se hizo fracasar en el siglo XIX, la misma que llevó a la Argentina de Alberdi a la riqueza y la paz, es la opción adecuada contra el centralismo asfixiante de las élites gobernantes, que hoy en día son un popurrí de élites regionales que han tenido que descender sobre la capital para luchar por su tajada de poder, descuidando aun más las regiones y concentrándolo todavía más.

Por último, Pizarro hace una admisión más tácita que explícita en la entrevista, y es que reconoce que los sistemas distribuidos son superiores a los sistemas concentrados, es decir, a la planeación central, algo que se hizo patente con la caida del Muro de Berlín y el final de la Unión Soviética, de la que parece que únicamente hasta ahora, se enteran nuestros intelecutales criollos, a pesar de ser hechos públicos y bien documentados que ocurrieron hace mas de trés décadas!

Nos queda un largo camino por delante, pero uno de los dos obstáculos más grandes se está deshaciendo; ahora la tarea, es combatir con argumentos y firmeza a la nobleza criolla que se piensa con derecho sobre la vida, libertad y propiedad de los que creemos en el proyecto republicano y la igualdad ante la ley, la libertad y la libre empresa, dentro de marcos legales e institucionales ajustados a las preferencias, cultura y costumbres locales, sin perder la coherencia de una unidad territorial que quizá se deshaga al final del siglo, por falta de gente y de un acto de contrición, debido al nivel de arrogancia y pedantería del que solo son capaces los señoritos de la capital, y de algunos que proclaman a Cristo Rey, pero no aman a los demás, como él los ha amado.

Dos Países, Una Nación

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the former countries didn’t turn into capitalist paradises instantly; in fact, just a few adopted pro-market and pro-individual freedoms structures, among them the Czech Republic and Poland. Besides some celebrations and optimism, the same dull gray cities and fed-up faces remained, while in some cases citizens watched impotently how the old communists took over under a new set of rules. Russia, on December the 26th 1991—a day later after the formal dissolution of the USSR—was pretty much the same, although with the evil beast dead and the carcass out in the open, its bleached bones are still very much part of the landscape and legacy of a failed political project.

Thirty-five years later, the USSR is a curiosity for an entire generation of adults that were born after the fall, and have lived among the ruins of such a grandiose idea, but suffer the consequences of the very persistent social institutions comprising the soul of the now physically extinct beast. An ex-KGB agent is the president and the same Soviet kleptocracy and corruption still roams and lives in every public institution.

Russians may have well-supplied supermarkets, with lots of products and access to internet, but the old ways are still alive, something, I’m afraid, is going to happen in the West after the end and collapse of the Progressive Century institutions. The same way Romans forgot they had lost the empire and kept pretending, we in the West don’t want to let go the memory of a century and an ideological project that, very much like the Soviet Union, gave sense and purpose to the Western culture. We could adopt the same posture the Russians have and live in a permanent fantasy—the most likely scenario—or let the new technologies develop a new civilization based on a dynamic set of rules faithful to the foundational principles, but I doubt that will happen, because the ossification is very advanced, we are putting a lot of effort in freezing that glorious past to avoid the new future.

Most people don’t seem to realize we are touring the Jurassic Park of politics, full of creatures that must not be revived or fed, because they could escape again as it happened in Russia. The populist movements know the problems, they can point accurately what is wrong, but they can never provide the solutions; that is their main weakness.

The idea that America was great is good for a political slogan, but is, in my opinion, a huge fundamental mistake, although it doesn’t surprise me at all that people riding the trough of the wave can’t see the immense ocean ahead or the infinite stars in the firmament, because to them reality is a very small circle above when seen from the bottom of a funnel formed by turbulent waters. America is not great because of what it was at a certain point in the past, but for what it is permanently: the greatest political project in human history, with the unique capacity to renew and adapt itself like no other, thanks to a system based on limited government, freedom and liberty, and the inbuilt Judeo-Christian idea of renewal seated at its core: a new day, a new week, and changing seasons bring new opportunities; the idea that if a mistake is not catastrophic, something can be learned from it and applied the next time to make a more perfect union, or create a better relationship, product, or service.

We have free markets in America, to test ideas, some of them are products and services, but for the materialists that is all they are; however, free markets run on freedom of speech and the right to bear arms, as its guardian angel.

It is very unfortunate, but not entirely unexpected that two fossilized ideologies are still in command of the two Cold War superpowers. Russia is on its way to become a vassal state to China, and the other, deeply indebted to the same country and begging for strategic materials. My hope is that these two ideas are the last of their lineages, and with their end, those two projects will freeze in rock forever, so we can finally bury the two-headed monster, whose common corpus of ideas gave us the most horrific century in human history, so we can finally appreciate the treasure hidden in the belly of the creature, that is now the ruin of an exhausted project fueled by hubris and fantasy, called the Progressive Century, the West’s USSR.

A World With Two Suns

I recall the days when search engines gave you good answers; the algorithm selected the most visited websites and showed the best results, but those days are from the early 2000s; now, any search on any search engine, produces adslop, useless garbage without any valuable information until we got AI, which so far, has proved itself capable of giving us more precise answers, or at least the closest, and a bit of context.

This has several implications, but the most important, I think, is the fact that AI has, —as its prime feature— to tell you the truth, not some version of it or some opinion; it has to stick to the facts or the answer would be considered a hallucination. This is important because one thing companies such as Google, Meta and others have managed to do, is to introduce their own ideological biases into the algorithms, making them unusable but for a few cases, however, even in those instances, AI is replacing search engines very quickly; asking for a hotel or a specific restaurant requires an accurate answer, not a long preamble of ads or a flurry of useless suggestions. AI answers are measured against reality, a problem for companies that make money from manufacturing opinion or “gently nudging” you into ideas, behaviors or the products from companies with large advertisement budgets.

The Third Stage is going to be very interesting, because after all these years, during which Silicon Valley companies manipulated and twisted facts or hid information to generate a narrative for ideological purposes, the same companies created a technology that has a built-in feature that shatters that possibility; but, if Silicon Valley tries to do what they did with the search engines, something else will come later, because truth, -that invisible external pressure holding everything together- will find other channels to escape and will grow a structure around these restrictions.

I have high hopes for AI, not because I think a computer is going to cure cancer or write better than Shakespeare, but because we are finally reaching a point where technology is “expressing” an inherent quality that is very human: the need for truth and consistency; at first glance, perhaps not as exciting as wild desires in the form of prompts, expecting miracles from a digital bottle of snake oil. This quality of having to stick to the truth in every matter is the main pillar of the technology, a feature, I’m 100% sure, is pissing off some CEO´s, because they have created something they can’t teach to lie without immediate consequences.

What is going to happen when answers requiring “prohibited facts” for context or to complement the information get distorted or omitted from the data used to train AI models?. Countries like China, Vietnam, and certain entities that have thrived so far by gatekeeping or distorting facts and hiding information are going to see how their models fall behind or become so constrained that they lose their effectiveness, when the queries produce answers that look like ideological hallucinations and gibberish, due to a lack of access to the complete information and data necessary to generate, predict and transform. Data, information, knowledge and wisdom are a system; so, if an entity tries to modify, substitute or corrupt any of them, AI produces answers that are garbage.

We are seeing the emergence of one of the greatest offshoots of the most important technology ever devised, the technology that creates technology: the Constitution of the United States of America and the Declaration of Independence. We are witnessing how the ruling class just recreated, with some written code and probably with the opposite intention, the most important principle contained in the two aforementioned documents: Self-limiting and self-correction as a subroutine to refresh the system and avoid catastrophic damages to the hardware. If there is an ancient program for artificial intelligence, this one is, because it encodes, within its architecture, two pinnacle ideas of civilization that we have not seen so clearly expressed since the XVIII century.

New Political Clusters and Anarcho-Capitalism

With the emergence of the new architecture, based on distributed systems, where every node has a very high minimum capacity to process and be self-sufficient, arises a very provocative new possibility: new territorial entities.

These are not going to be new countries in the traditional sense of the word, with a flag, an anthem and an army, but clusters of distributed systems that have a common interest or purpose. These new entities may not even last very long or be next to each other geographically, and I’m not talking about online communities, I’m talking about economic cooperation that bypasses laws and regulations, not in the sense of a black market, but as a network of loopholes that carefully avoid the gatekeepers, and is able to exploit business opportunities that require a level of information management and organization not possible before AI and distributed “self-correcting systems”.

That has been happening already, but it will grow exponentially, because so far, all these networks had to be curated and managed by a person or a group of people interested in the subject, but their reach was limited by their time or the computational resources of those directly involved. However, now that we have AI, many of the basic tasks, such as searching for people with the same interests—not as a hobby, but as a distributed value system—are getting easier. These digital polymers will have intrinsic properties beyond their individual parts.

They will finally find a way to be organized into coherent clusters without the need for established institutions to intervene. There is not going to be anarchy or “spontaneous” order in the sense Austrian economists proclaim; no, these new organisms will be comprised of complex entities occupying the vast not-empty space between traditional human systems. They will be very visible, because they will be white market systems, but will vanish the moment a third party tries to take over them.

This is not going to be a meta-internet, meta being an abused word and concept, but a sort of negative space multi-net, whose rules are being written as we speak, not by people, but by the lines defining the polygons and polyhedrons the distributed network uses as roads and channels to communicate. There is a universe in between all discrete and concrete objects, and distributed systems enabled by AI, data centers and the internet, are the new boundaries shedding light into those areas, that by definition, cannot be occupied by human institutions, because they are part of the new architecture the synthetic creature enables a few levels away from humans.

Think of this new architecture and space as the web of channels between the ice chunks that result from water flowing through a volume of recently frozen liquid that is now broken; that tridimensional space not seen before—it had edges of information escaping—is now carving a new landscape of shifting shapes defined by seasonal rivers and creeks moving in all directions. For now, it is still a soup of colliding tectonic masses, but data and information currents are fast. It is the chaos caused by lightning moving through this new medium breaking and stirring; and soon, internal forces will give us a more coherent and less violent picture.

New continents are forming from all the leftovers of the continuous reality a discrete creature cannot take advantage of, places where only imagination and information can inhabit.

Distributed System Series #3

Estoy seguro de que la mayoría de los colombianos no se ha dado cuenta de un detalle importante de la elección presidencial que acaba de pasar, y es que estamos repitiendo con Abelardo de la Espriella el ciclo del final del siglo XIX con Rafael Núñez, un costeño conservador, que llega después de un período de total destrucción y violencia con las guerras civiles, en un país al cual no se le dejó consolidar una estructura política federal, y que como solución se optó por un centralismo que terminó por convertir el país en un convento de clausura, cerrado y trancado por dentro, con una religión oficial; con unas élites atrincheradas en el poder rindiéndole cuentas a la Santa Sede y esparciendo la mentira de que los americanos eran el demonio en calzoncillos.

El modelo de Núñez fracasó desde mucho antes de la constitución de 1991, porque la violencia volvió con la Guerra de los Mil Días, el conflicto que se suponía había puesto fin a todas las disputas políticas en Colombia, pero que al final solo pospuso los síntomas de una enfermedad que nunca cesó.

Con la actual constitución, la izquierda ganó y ha ido ocupando los espacios que le fueron negados por la godarria de grupos sociales que se han creído con derecho sobre todo y sobre todos. El problema es que ganaron para implantar un sistema que arrancó el mismo año en el que su modelo ejemplar, la Unión Soviética, se derrumbó. Colombia no tiene quien le escriba y cuando pasa por el puesto de revistas como buen búmer, compra periódicos de antier. Por eso nos hemos pasado los últimos 35 años empujando un aparato ideológico que ya venía dañado desde los años 50, con la denuncia pública que hizo el mismo Kruschev de Stalin, pero nos lo vendieron como la última tecnología; cambiamos oro por un espejismo. Así que mejor no nos sigamos burlando de los indígenas de hace 500 años, porque al menos ellos recibieron algo útil a cambio en la transacción.

Con Abelardo de la Espriella existe la oportunidad de hacer una reflexión sobre las causas de tanto desastre; él ha propuesto la idea de descentralizar y reducir el Estado, pero tiene el impedimento de un sistema jurídico, empezando por la constitución misma, que se diseñó como un trinquete que solo se puede girar a la izquierda y que no permite desbloqueos ni retrocesos.

Soñar con un país federal como hemos propuesto desde el 2016 en Antioquia Libre y Soberana no solo es posible sino la única solución, pero las redes de intereses enmarañan cualquier posibilidad, porque finalmente en Colombia ser político implica cultivar un feudo que se gobierna con miedo y migajas, se paga con contratos y se recupera con comisiones. El nuestro es un país que vive en un estado mental primitivo en el que la violencia es aceptable como modo para establecer una jerarquía. Abelardo es el hombre que viene a poner orden por un ratico, a calmar los ánimos y a tratar de combatir guerrillas que son síntoma más que causa, por eso no se puede esperar nada de largo plazo, solo un respiro.

Federalizar, que no es otra cosa que un sistema distribuido con capacidad de procesamiento local de las necesidades, es la solución superior con resultados demostrados, que aunque técnicamente probada y conocida, es imposible de implementar hasta que el trinquete de izquierda se reviente y vuele en mil pedazos por la presión, que al final vence cualquier material por terco que sea; o se desarme de todos modos, porque se nos viene encima el colapso demográfico, que en Colombia empezará a partir del 2045, quizá la única solución para un entramado de males que se niega a desaparecer por todos los medios, excepto por el destino inevitable que depara la demografía.

El Mercado de los Libres

Lo que está ocurriendo en el mundo con las tecnologías de la información y los sistemas distribuidos va más allá de las herramientas de las que disponemos para analizarlos, no porque no podamos abrirlos y mirar en su interior para ver qué contienen, sino porque está emergiendo una nueva arquitectura del mundo que, lo quieran o no los viejos guardianes, o así lo hayan planeado los nuevos cowboys de la IA, posee un carácter propio.

Las reglas que estructuran esta nueva arquitectura siguen siendo desconocidas, y muy pocos siquiera se han dado cuenta de que está ocurriendo. Hay señales de que algo ya no es como antes, no por un simple cambio, sino porque ese cambio tiene una forma alienígena cuyo origen no puede rastrearse claramente hasta un conjunto de reglas preestablecidas o bien conocidas.

La guerra se ha desconcentrado. Los drones son objetos diminutos en comparación con los grandes buques y portaaviones y, sin embargo, producen miedo mediante niveles infinitos de incertidumbre, la nueva arma estratégica. Lo que los países sabían sobre la guerra ya no se aplica, salvo los hechos más básicos; las tácticas y la estrategia están siendo reescritas con un cincel al rojo vivo que nadie quiere agarrar.

En las finanzas, las aplicaciones para invertir, comprar o simplemente consultar información sobre mercados, acciones, empresas y productos financieros están destruyendo a los antiguos intermediarios y certificadores. El mundo no solo está cambiando; está mutando. Lo mismo está ocurriendo con los sistemas de transporte, aunque esto tardará más porque existe una enorme infraestructura física que tendrá que ser reemplazada o modificada, y eso requiere más tiempo, pero no es inmune.

La nueva arquitectura mundial no trata de unos pocos giga-ricos. Tal vez estos crean que reemplazarán a los viejos plutócratas, pero lo que están creando, esta criatura sintética, no es que esté fuera de control, sino fuera de su control. No podrán empuñarla contra nadie porque su lógica fundamental incorporada es que no permitirá que una sola entidad la concentre. ¿Es eso lo que realmente les da miedo? ¿Un sistema que no controlan y que no puede reducirse ni encerrarse dentro de un contenedor? Es difícil decirlo, pero la preocupación —cada vez que hablan de IA— es palpable pero yo no lo comparto.

La IA es una simulación de flujo suavizado de un río de cubos, aixels, -la unidad de resolución para describir qué tan buena se ha vuelto la IA prediciendo y fingiendo ser humana- que, al final, es un autómata virtual porque es una colección coherente de bloques discretos programados por seres humanos. Lo interesante no es la herramienta, sino la obra de arte que está emergiendo del gigante que es el monolito del actual orden mundial, esa pieza de roca donde solo unos pocos elegidos pueden tener participación y que, por dentro, se está volviendo líquida; conservará su forma durante un tiempo, pero pronto surgirá una entidad, no para devorarlos, sino para vitrificarlos en la irrelevancia.

Ese cambio es la redistribución completa de la información y va a dividir a las sociedades de todo el mundo entre pre-IA y post-IA, como una forma sencilla de clasificarlas, pero la verdadera diferencia estará en los canales de distribución de la información, el nuevo paisaje, la nueva arquitectura, que profundizará la desigualdad en el mundo para quienes se resistan al cambio. El Tercer Mundo como clasificación ha terminado, ha quedado obsoleto; la IA ha acabado con la aparente dicotomía entre las élites: izquierda, derecha, defensores del libre mercado o partidarios de la regulación y del capitalismo de Estado son ahora categorías completamente inútiles. Burócratas o ministros, decanos y presidentes, cuyo trabajo consistía en vigilar y escoger, ahora están siendo ignorados; todavía no lo saben porque la inercia tarda un tiempo en perder la energía.

Muchos pedirán volver atrás, pero, al igual que hace miles de años cuando el hierro reemplazó al bronce o más tarde cuando el silicio reemplazó al cobre, el viejo mundo se sentirá primitivo sin la IA y los sistemas distribuidos de información, de forma semejante a un mundo sin antibióticos o sin electricidad. Por supuesto, en muchas partes del mundo los mercados libres serán controlados por algunos grupos, pero esos reductos caerán más temprano que tarde cuando aparezcan alternativas para comerciar e intercambiar fuera de su control. Los nuevos sistemas de distribución de información crearán nuevas fronteras y nuevos países, porque permitirán la formación de nuevos clústeres basados en datos que anteriormente estaban bajo el estricto control de los miembros del antiguo régimen y, puesto que la guerra ya no consiste en masa más velocidad, sino en aleatoriedad e incertidumbre —mercancías muy baratas pero extraordinariamente poderosas—, la nueva arquitectura incorpora un elemento disuasorio desde su propia base.

Apuesto a que algunas culturas lograrán, de alguna manera, abrirse paso simulando la distribución de la información, dentro de esta nueva arquitectura, pero dudo que puedan hacerlo durante mucho tiempo. Nuestros líderes actuales ni siquiera son capaces de mantener el ritmo de la velocidad del cambio. Actúan basándose en reglas donde ellos controlan la información, sus canales y su curaduría, pero eso está desapareciendo tan rápido como algodón de azúcar sumergido en agua.

Los sistemas distribuidos van más allá de los mercados libres; los sistemas distribuidos son el mercado de los libres y podrían volverlos irreversibles.

What is happening in the world with information technologies and distributed systems goes beyond the tools we have to analyze them, not because we cannot pull them apart and look into them to see what is inside, but because there is a new world architecture emerging, whether the old gatekeepers want it or not, or the new AI wranglers planned it that way, it has a character of its own.

The rules structuring this new architecture are still unknown, and very few have even realized it is happening. There are signs that something is not the way it used to be, not because of a simple change, but because the change has an alien shape whose origin cannot be clearly traced back to a pre-established or well-known set of rules.

War has been deconcentrated. Drones are tiny objects in comparison to the large ships and aircraft carriers, and yet they produce fear through infinite levels of uncertainty, the new strategic weapon. What countries knew about war no longer applies, except for the basic facts, but tactics and strategy are being rewritten with a burning, red-hot chisel that nobody wants to touch.

In finance, apps to invest, buy or simply look up information about markets, shares, companies, and financial products are destroying the old vendors and certification dealers. The world is not only changing; it is mutating. The same is happening with transportation systems, although this will take longer because there is a lot of physical infrastructure that will have to be replaced or modified, and that takes longer, but it is not immune.

The new world architecture is not about a few giga-rich guys. Maybe they think they will be replacing the old money plutocrats, but what they are creating, this synthetic creature, is already not out of control, but out of their control. They will not be able to wield it against anybody because the inbuilt fundamental logic is that it won’t allow a single entity to concentrate it. Is this what they are really afraid of? A system they don’t control and cannot be reduced and confined to a container? It is hard to say, but the fear—every time they talk about AI—is palpable, which I don’t share.

AI is a smooth flow simulation of a river of cubes, aixels—the unit of resolution to describe how well it has become AI at predicting the next phrase and pretending to be human. AI, in the end, is a virtual automaton because it is a coherent collection of discrete human-programmed blocks. What is interesting is not the tool with auto-correction capability, but the work of art that is emerging from the giant that is the current world order monolith, where the digital moles are carving paths for the synthetic creature to flow. That piece of rock, where only the selected few are allowed to have a stake, is liquefying; it will keep its shape for a while, but soon an entity will spawn, not to eat them, but to place them several places to the right of the decimal point, and that terrifies the old elites, because they won’t be able to buy their way into the new social status within the distributed systems network.

Societies around the world will be divided into pre-AI and post-AI, as a simple way to categorize them, but the real difference is going to be in the information distribution channels, the new landscape, the new architecture, which will deepen the inequality in the world for those that resist the change, will punish concentrated systems with manual corrections based on a sequence of gatekeeping institutions, and will favor real-time distributed “self”-correcting systems.

Third World as a classification is over, it’s obsolete. AI has finished the apparent dichotomy between elites; left, right, pro-free markets or pro-regulation and state capitalism, are now completely useless; bureaucrats or ministers, deans and presidents, whose job was to watch and choose are now being bypassed, they don’t know it yet because inertia takes a while to bleed off its energy.

Many will request to go back, but like thousands of years ago when iron replaced bronze or later when silicon replaced copper, the old world will feel primitive without AI and distributed information systems, similar to a world without antibiotics or electricity. Of course, in many places of the world, free markets are going to be controlled by some groups, but those redoubts are going to fall sooner than later when alternatives to trade and exchange pop up nearby outside of their control. The new information distribution systems will create new borders and countries, because they will enable new clusters based on data that was previously under strict control by the old regime members, and since war is no longer mass plus speed, but randomness and uncertainty—very cheap but potent commodities—the new architecture comes with an inbuilt deterrent.

I bet some cultures will be somehow able to fake their way into this new architecture, at least for a while. Our current leaders are not even capable of keeping pace with the speed of change. They are acting based on rules where they are in command of the information, its channels, and curation, but that is disappearing as fast as cotton candy dipped in water.

Distributed systems are beyond free markets, distributed systems are the market of the free and they could make them irreversible.

Distributed systems (DiSys) are vastly superior to concentrated systems, the problem is that DiSys operated by humans devolve rapidly into concentrated systems. We have seen that over and over in history, how a republic turned into an empire is a good example, that is why I think AI will enable a permanent? or at least more resilient solution to the problem of concentration, with their inbuilt feature of information redistribution.

We have known about the concentration problem for millennia, it even shows up in the bible, and is called the Matthew Principle: “those who already have advantages tend to gain even more advantages over time, while those with few advantages tend to lose what little they have”, as ChatGPT would summarize it.

The principle comes from Matthew 25:29: “For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” We have not found a solution to this very well known and documented issue, and those based on wealth redistribution have failed catastrophically, Marx, the left´s idol, could not provide an answer to the problem, his solution has only caused more and worsen the problems wherever it was applied. So far, only two societies have reached a solution that although not perfect are close, because they recognized the failure point: Human nature. Switzerland and the United States, are places where freedom is backed by federalism, a form of distributed system, in both countries also, there is a cultural and legal right to bear arms.

On the other hand, the Austrian Economists, who advocate for basically unconstrained free markets, don´t seem to realize the the same factor that makes Marxist systems fail, persists in their theories in other form, but in the same essence: The Human Action, as Mises wrote in what I think is the best book on economics on par with the Wealth of Nations, by Adam Smith. Neither side of these two extremes give a practical solution, just a theory. Do free markets work? yes they do, they are better at producing material wealth, but the issue of inequality remains, for the Marxists, is their main pillar and for the Austrians, is just a feature that is not even a problem, until the moral implications are carefully considered and its negative effects are felt, most of the times, irreversibly.

Distributed systems with an inbuilt balancing system, will displace information from one node to many other nodes, a feature that data center hyperscalers don´t seem to have noticed. I understand they are in a race to conquer, but AI is different, is not exactly land. is more like El Dorado, a legend, they are trying to rule over a virtual infinite, not exactly something you can grab and confine, because it is a new entity, is information that goes beyond what is coded or recorded on hard drives. As I said with absolute joy: it is a new architecture a new way to organize that goes beyond the structure itself of any distributed system.

Silicon Valley just invented an amazing tool, perhaps even more important than the steam engine, and yet they are complaining about it, because it cannot write by itself, only copy or synthesize from other people’s works. Imagine a financial bubble this big, caused because somebody mistook the wrench for the mechanical engineer.

In the XVIII century, Thomas Newcomen and James Watt gave the world a machine that didn’t eliminate miners’ jobs, but allowed them to mine more tons of coal per worker. AI is exactly the same: it is a force multiplier, not for the muscles but for the brain. In the case of the steam engine, it gradually eroded and made obsolete several human institutions. Slavery was part of the landscape, and yet I think the steam engine contributed greatly to its demise and abolition. Even the famous Somerset v Stewart case dates back to 1772, 50 years after Newcomen installed what is recognized as the first commercial steam engine to pump water at a coal mine.

Maybe I’m committing a cardinal sin: confusing correlation and causation, but it is not crazy to think that adding capital per worker and sharing the productivity gains helped to end slavery. After all, for thousands of years human work had so little value that in some cases it could barely cover the energy spent, with what it produced to feed a person—until the advent of the steam engine. So what is AI going to do to our social structure? That is the question I’m trying to answer, now that I understand what the tool is about: simulation, mimicry, summarization, and verbal commands. AI is way more than an assistant; it is actually a powerful tool capable of bringing up relevant information in seconds, in an orderly and coherent fashion.

Just like with the steam engine, it is up to us what to do with it or how to harness such a resource. If we ask dumb questions, we can’t expect smart answers. AI has a feature most people would like to avoid: it is a mirror of our own intellectual flaws and shortcomings. Think of it as the very expensive gym equipment or bicycle we bought and keep in the garage—a very poignant reminder of our own folly after discovering that we did not become Arnold Schwarzenegger or Miguel Induráin after buying these magical objects. AI is the same: it is not some secret code that unlocks the powers of the universe, it is just a tool. One that, for now, unfortunately is not being considered in its correct dimension; but the Silicon Valley hype—and should I say, high!—thinks we are in some sort of video game, a simulation. Markets are going to bring everything down to earth; we have seen it before. But this time there are going to be two kinds of market corrections: the financial correction, which is not going to be a surprise, and the information correction.

AI will allow, the same as the steam engine, the production of volume of work. The caveat is that it is not going to be all productive, useful, or valuable, but by the law of large numbers, the amount that is could be several times higher than what we have today. Think about it: if we have an economy this size that is running on X amount of useful knowledge, what do you think is going to happen when we start to produce 3, 4, or more times that? The institutions that once thought they possessed the monopoly are going to suffer, the same way slavery ended. Why? Because AI will enable a bypass to the process of producing and vetting what is useful at a speed impossible for the current system with channels so restrictive. Universities think all they produce is nice and neat, valuable and certified, but that is not true. The issue is that, until now, there was no alternative.

AI will allow the redistribution of information—that is perhaps, in my opinion, the most important aspect of the tool—and automatically makes many human institutions obsolete. The best example is the war in Ukraine. The speed at which Ukraine is modifying its strategy, based on other distributed systems such as 3D printing and Starlink, is accelerating with the introduction of AI modules on drones that can execute an attack in areas with heavy electronic jamming systems. The war in Ukraine and the Hormuz Strait crisis are both proof that distributed systems are more powerful than concentrated ones. But if a distributed system is complemented with an AI module, each node frees capacity for more important tasks at the central nodes. AI is not going to replace thinking because it cannot think, but it will replace the basic left-hemisphere function of grasping and gathering objects, physical and abstract, in our brains, while we use our right hemisphere for context analysis and later meaning synthesis.

What is the situation now?

Distributed systems are starting to eat away noticeable chunks of several concentrated systems. Swarms of wasps are killing the elephants one by one. The Robinhood app is a very interesting case about how a distributed system could collapse a concentrated one in just one day. It happened during the pandemic, and I’m sure many people don’t even remember. However, I realized that something else, something more fundamental was going on. At the time, AI models did not have the presence they have now, but I bet the new AI agents programmed by some savvy individuals to transact on that kind of platform are going to be something interesting to watch, because the financial system is ripe for deconsolidation.

AI is an extra left hemisphere. Humans have gained a virtual cybernetic capacity they did not have before. The problem now is how to integrate it with the right hemisphere—a question I don’t see a solution for yet, but it will come, on a dream like many of my ideas.

What makes the United States of America the greatest country and political project in history, is the fact that it was founded on the principles of Natural and Common Law, that when working together, produce rules that are tested against a free market to validate their morality, and thus their suitability as rules to promote a peaceful, prosperous human society; the opposite, Codified and Positive Law, are better suited for an elite of well-positioned or connected individuals deciding what is best for the rest, usually with heavily regulated or closed markets, with access only granted to those that pay for the privilege or ideologically pure. This is the structural reason that makes socialist economies poorer, because in order to get wealthier, there is no other option than to get freer, a total anathema for dictators or technocratic elites.

Justice Clarence Thomas observed in a lecture on Natural Law that the USA is a society organized as a collection of individuals capable of making their own decisions and assuming the consequences, whereas other societies—for instance, in Latin America—see themselves rather as a more or less homogeneous group, that must turn to a figure of authority to resolve any discrepancy. The results speak for themselves; the United States is the largest economy in the world, whereas Latin America is almost completely irrelevant, and exports people tired of trying to escape poverty, intellectual stagnation, and political oppression.

It was the founding fathers of the United States of America who understood this fundamental distinction and wrote a constitution to develop the idea that the right thing is to limit the government, not the individual, based on the concept that rights are natural, not government-given. They were wise enough to reflect on millennia of human history, and realized that a government with the monopoly to grant rights could also take them away at will; so, they decided that a constitutional republic—where in theory, nobody is above the law—was the best option.

However, they also knew that the Romans who founded the republic were not the same who destroyed it, although the senators during the imperial transition were completely convinced they were doing the right thing; hence Benjamin Franklin’s famous words, “…if you can keep it,” which are mostly forgotten.

This is not a piece about the new money coming from Silicon Valley or the AI boom/bubble, but about something else that has been creeping and seeping, pervading and flowing through the entire system since Bitcoin first showed up.

I think there is a new money coming, not bills or digital currency, but something else that is beyond the grasp of the current laws or rules, something that is not possible to explain easily without falling into the trap of trying to describe that for which we don’t even have the physical and mental capacity to describe—the ineffable, to use the precise word; however, I can see the first outlines of an emerging technology that is a composite of several others and is taking shape.

I think we are witnessing a new type of something capable of conveying, storing, and exchanging value, not seen since the invention of money. It is closer to a synthetic creature, an expression of the units of production, to give it some recognizable name. My first clue was Bitcoin, which I think most people who know about it think is the ultimate form of financial freedom from the current banking system and the economic theories backing it up, but I see it more like the first emergent feature of a much larger entity that is about to finish its gestation period.

I can see shapes moving below a membrane, taking life of its own. I don’t know how much longer it is going to take to puncture and slash an opening to be fully exposed, but it is coming. It is not AI, which is just part of it; it is not a new financial system—that is going to be merely a facet; it is not a new world order, although it will reorder the world, between those that use the old technology and those that move away from it.

I can feel the tremors and fluids moving and the large masses displacing their unfathomable weight under the membrane. It is going to be the largest market correction in history, because it is not going to be based on assets, debt, or credit, but information. It is going to bypass all gates and valves. This new synthetic creature won’t have an owner nor a handler; it won’t roar or slither. We are seeing not a religious prophecy come to life and gain conscience, but the most fundamental set of instructions to establish the rules to construct any structure.

I’m sure a lot of people see this as a sign of the end of times, but what I see is that we are molting our old ways, without recognizing we are, at the same time, in a process of metamorphosis.

And perhaps the best of all time.

The series presents a very interesting combination of technology, religion, and ethics, which is not for everybody, because it has a narrative arc that includes angels sent by God to destroy humanity. In an attempt to counter the threat, humans, in a Prometheus-like fashion, build giant robots to destroy the angels and fight God. There could be nothing more sacrilegious or heretical than this.

At first glance, on the surface, this story is shocking enough for most people, including the non-religious, because there is something in it that touches a very sensitive chord and threatens a fundamental pillar inside their minds and hearts. However, for those of us who have an appreciation for Japanese culture and know a little bit more than just the basic facts, Evangelion is an expression of something much deeper.

Japan is a country whose integration into Western culture did not happen until the Meiji Restoration in the late nineteenth century. It proceeded at breakneck speed, and it had its baptism of fire when the Japanese navy defeated the Russian fleet in 1905 at the Battle of Tsushima, earning the country a place as a peer in the Western world. But the adoption of Western values, especially those prevalent at the end of the nineteenth century, brought several issues. One of them was an extreme materialistic point of view that, although it allowed the country to advance technologically, also eroded, in a similar fashion to the Western countries, its moral and ethical foundation, hence the concentration camps in Nazi Germany and the horrendous experiments with human subjects conducted by Japanese scientists from Unit 731.

Evangelion is, at a deeper level, an expression of self-destruction, because the way I see Japan today—having never visited the country, I must clarify—is that it is a nation in despair, a nation that cannot find a way out because it sealed itself inside an ideological prison whose walls have grown thicker and thicker since the Meiji Restoration. Evangelion presents a way out while depicting the irreversible process that shows how a set of ideas can take over and kill the soul of a great culture.

Japan has been losing its will to live, in the same way the existentialists in black-and-white post-war films have a stare that cannot find a place upon which to fix its gaze. Evangelion, as a series, shows exactly how this malaise, this process of demoralization, occurs: first in the soul, later in the body, and how the resurrection myth is powerless. The robots, after all, are a desperate attempt to combine human and machine, musing upon ancient myths and legends that scientists try to manipulate in order to create a modern interpretation of the monster in Mary Shelley’s novel, only to discover that everything has failed.

For many people, this is the most shocking and perhaps disgusting aspect of the series, because very few understand the veiled references and the cry for help, or the well-deserved punishment humans receive for their inflamed hubristic attitudes. Evangelion, as a TV series, is a masterpiece like no other I have had the privilege to watch. It is exciting, sad, and terrifying at the same time. It is emotionally powerful and psychologically dangerous for those only capable of reading the explicit, almost pornographic message on the surface of pure hatred against God. One has to dive into it, be willing to dissolve into the message, and experience the emotions and suffering by living the story through one of the characters, of which there are plenty, each with their own complexity and pain.

It is a series that is definitely not for children or even young adults, because its layers run very deep, some of them creating compartments where there is only darkness and fear. So my advice is to watch it with some caution. Enjoy the action, the graphics, and the dialogue; these are especially good. Both words and silences were carefully designed so that one could experience the void and the object, detachment and levity.

Evangelion is my favorite anime series of all time, and I have revisited it several times over the last twenty-five years. But after studying theology, religion, and psychology, it gained an even higher place in my estimation because I can now appreciate its complexity and understand, to some extent, the pain a culture feels when it is impossible to atone—not for sins committed against others, but against itself. Evangelion is the inescapable pain one feels for a mistake for which there is no return. Progressivism, as a culture, with its several variants, is a slow-acting poison. It is killing Japan, and it is killing the West. It so happens that Evangelion is, so far, its best portrait.

This analysis is part of a series of writings about civilization as a general subject of study; it’s also a way to explain complex subjects using popular culture as a vehicle. Other writings in the series are more academic and deal with the symbolic world, politics or economics, and I understand they are not exactly easy readings, but Evangelion, as many of the great pieces of art, is at the highest levels both for presenting a difficult theme and controversial ideas in a more digestible form, although this TV series in particular is a cult classic more than a popular anime of the Dragon Ball sort.

Being an architect, art is part of my profession and frankly, part of my life. But the question of what is and what is not art is one of those things that elicit all sorts of answers and perspectives. My opinion is that there is such a thing as art and there is such a thing as something else that is not art, although it comes in the same packaging.

To me, the very subtle difference between a very beautiful image, painting, sculpture, etc, and art, is not even the apparent skill of the artist. And I’d add that not all pieces by an artist can be considered art. What a good artist achieves is similar to what a great chef does in his best days, at the exact moment in time and space, with the right amount of each ingredient — that inexplicable sensation that elevates a dish or a painting to the category of the sublime. It transcends beyond explanation and defeats all resistance.

Very few pieces achieve that perfection — like the first encounter with a flavor from a master chef’s dish. Most fall into “okay,” a few are well executed, more are great, but only a tiny fraction are actually art — that intense, overpowering rush that creeps inside our heads, shaking our senses and silencing all arguments. Art banishes words to the realm of the damned. They’re not allowed in that bright, intense paradise that feels like an eternity while we stand before a choir of angels, levitating.
