In this episode, the Gettin’ Fishy crew explore the vibrant little cardinal tetra! A mainstay in the hobby for many years, many cardinal tetras are actually wild caught. Yes, these fish are so abundant and such fast reproducers that fishing for them is very sustainable! We also discuss Project Piaba, a non profit focused on keeping this economy alive in the Amazon river basin as market competition has risen in Southeast Asia. Come learn a little about these tiny jewels of South America!

This podcast is brought to you by the comb wrasse. If you see these fish in the wild, you would see instantly why they got their name. They can often be found in the pockets of distinguished gentlemen or grooming the upper lip of mustachioed royalty. Cousins of the cleaner wrasse, the comb wrasse also clean parasites and dead bits from larger fish. But they do it in such debonair attire. Cheers to you, fancy comb wrasse.

In this episode the crew invites Dr. Andy Aman of Cal State LA to nerd out about fishkeeping and to teach us how fish skin evolved over time. Come on a journey as we learn about how human hair might have once been scales and how teeth and scales are inextricably linked in development! And maybe we still have fish skin on our eyes? It's a very interesting episode and you won’t be sorry!

This podcast is brought to you by the moray eel. In the timeless words of Dean Martin, When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's a moray. Probably a moray eel you can only see because it's illuminated by moonlight. And only if its left its abode, a crevice in the rocks in the Indo-pacific. And woe is you if you're a small fish and the moray has teamed up with a grouper. I’m not joking. This is a real thing that happens in nature. Cheers to you, our snakelike fish. May a moray always mean love in our hearts.

In this episode the Gettin’ Fishy With It crew delve into the world of gouramis. You might be surprised how many fish are classified as gouramis. From Siamese fighting fish to paradise fish, gouramis can measure a fraction of an inch in length to more than two feet long! This group is quite an interesting one. And they've adapted amazing ways to survive and breed in various environments. You won’t want to miss this one!

This podcast is brought to you by the royal gramma. These fish truly embody royalty. From their royal purple heads to their judgemental down-turned mouths they were born to rule. After spawning, the males spend their time guarding the eggs. No royal guard needed for these males. They get down and do the dirty work themselves. Hail to you, royal gramma as you continue to grace our oceans and our aquariums.

In this massive episode, the GFWI crew invite our friends from Fishkeep & Chill, Nora Hickey and Jen Reynolds to talk about cory catfish! Cory cats are such awesome hobby fish and have great personalities. We go real deep into the classification, their care and best approaches to keeping them in the hobby. We are so thankful to have our friends The Fish Ladies back, and we hope you enjoy this MEGA episode.

This podcast is brought to you by the Lawnmower Blenny. These little herbivores live amongst the coral, scraping up and consuming algae, as well as sifting through the sand. In fact they aren't quite herbivores as they’ve been known to eat tiny invertebrates and detritus from the substrate. They are also incredibly aggressive toward other blennies so care must be taken when selecting them in the hobby. It would take about 1 million lawnmower blennies to cut the grass of a football pitch. And that is a statistic I just made up. Cheers to you, lawnmower blenny!

Be sure to check out Jen and Nora’s amazing site! Here’s a link to the article mentioned in the episode, featuring Nora’s Corydoras collection, and here’s one about Corydoras care, along with some other great beginner species. Fishkeep and Chill has so much incredible content, you won’t want to miss it!

In this episode, the crew gets schooled on the subject of conservation, Southern Resident Killer Whales and Chinook salmon. We humans historically haven’t made the best decisions as we develop and change the environment, and the repercussions for wildlife can be extensive. Whether its barriers to fish passage from dam building or habitat degradation and population collapse from overfishing, it can affect the food chain all the way up to the apex predator. Lucky for us, Charles Bradfield is here to explain what he’s learned about how two incredible species, severely impacted by human actions, are inexorably interconnected.

This podcast is brought to you by the clown triggerfish. These saltwater marvels are a sight to behold. They swim using their dorsal and anal fins, similarly to the ocean sunfish. They delight in consuming shellfish and are some of the most aggressive species in the ocean. In fact, the name clown triggerfish should not evoke laughter but rather fear as they are not afraid of humans and not afraid to bite you. Cheers to you clown triggerfish, truly the clown of our nightmares.

In this episode, Josh and Christine dive deep into the subject of anglerfish. You'll be surprised how diverse this group of fishes is! You'll also be surprised how many fish you recognize that are actually anglerfish, even though they go by a different name. Deep sea anglerfish get all the limelight but there are lots of species that live in the shallow depths of the ocean of various colors and shapes! Come learn about these masters of camouflage and even one that absorbs light like a black hole!

This podcast is brought to you by the wahoo, a slimmer cousin of the tuna. These are highly prized sport catching fish. In fact if you caught one, you might want to shout out “wahoo”! They have characteristic stripes that make them look like an aquatic zebra, minus the giant buck teeth. They are strong fighters when caught on a fishing line and if they snap your line, they may have the last wahoo after all. Cheers to you wahoo and may you swim eternally in our hearts.

Here’s a link to the Ze Frank video we referenced. The reproductive portions are oversimplified, but there’s great footage of the diversity of anglerfishes in the video!

In this episode the crew gets patriotic with America’s favorite fish, the American Shad! We meet Bridgette Nicolosi, a fisheries ecologist that knows a ton about the early life stages of these mysterious fish. This podcast is brought to you by the candy darter. Ever been curious what a candy cane might look like if Cinderella’s fairy godmother turned it into a fish? There you have it. These masters of moving water can dart around quite quickly, zipping about between the rocks of many brooks and streams in the mid-Atlantic United states. Despite their name, I can assure you, they do not taste at all like candy. Unless you are a predator who likes to eat darters, then maybe it does. Cheers to you, candy darter, may you brighten up our streams forever.

In today’s episode, Josh and Christine discuss their respective trips to the largest aquarium in the USA, the Georgia Aquarium! Whether it’s massive sharks, giant coral reef tanks, freshwater biomes or aquatic mammals, the Georgia Aquarium really has it all. If you want to see the only whale shark in human care in the USA, this is the place for you. So come along as we walk you through the history of this aquarium, its layout and many of our favorite experiences.

This podcast is brought to you by the whale shark. In another episode of scientists naming animals after other animals, the whale shark is hardly a whale in any way except it is massive like one. It's also quite harmless to humans, much like your average whale. It is not, however, harmless to plankton and small fish. To them, the whale shark is a massive scourge of the sea, consuming all of their family and friends. Cheers to you, whale shark. You pull off polka dots better than all of us.

In today’s episode, the crew dives deep into the sea! We interview Dr. Andrew Thaler about deep sea vents, mining and the crazy metals that accumulate down there. The deep abyssal plane accounts for 50% of the earth's surface and yet we still know so little about it. We also discuss some of the interesting and funny facts about Reynolds Wrap, General Mills and deep sea submersibles. You’d never guess how these relate! So SUBMERGE yourself in learning as we go on a grand deep sea adventure!

This podcast is brought to you by the lanternfish. Classified into the order Mictophiformes, there are over 240 species of these deep sea dwellers. Lanternfish need no matches to light their lantern-like structures but rather depend on bioluminescent bacteria. In the olden-times lanternfishes were hung in the doorways of old houses to illuminate their entrances. And you believe that, I’ve got a lanternfish to sell you. Cheers to you lanternfish, may you light up our lives forever.

This podcast is brought to you by the California golden trout, Oncorhynchus aguabonita. The golden trout is the state fish of California and is truly a beauty to behold. Native to the Sierra Nevada mountains, most fish only get to a foot in length. Some say the golden trout was the main reason why the gold rush occurred, as many Americans traveled west to pan for them in hopes to get rich. Cheers to you, California Golden trout! We know just how valuable you are.

In this episode, the crew dives into the chicken of the sea… tunafish! Tuna are incredible animals. They are sleek and fast and get gigantic! Do you know they are warm blooded? Honestly, the moniker, “chicken of the sea” is so unfair to them. They are so much more majestic than chickens. Anyway, join us as we learn all about these powerful apex predators of the ocean!

This podcast is brought to you by the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus! They are North America's most abundant catfish species and they are the most prevalent caught by anglers in the United States. They are also the most commonly found watching their favorite shows on TV and have been known to change the… channel ... more than any other water dwelling organisms. They also have taste receptors all over their bodies, making them the tastiest fish of all time. But why don't you be the judge of that? Cheers to you, channel catfish!

In this episode, the crew makes like a remora and dives into… a new topic! Cloacal diving has been making its way around the internet and these manta rays and remoras don't even know how famous they are. Join us as we discuss the dynamics of a host and its symbionts with Emily Yeager, who published this enrapturing paper on fish swimming up into manta rays and much much more!

This podcast is brought to you by the yellow perch, a freshwater fish native to North America. Known for its characteristic yellow and black vertical bars, the freshwater perch inhabits lakes, ponds and streams. Unlike birds, yellow perch are incapable of perching anywhere. During the breeding season, females lay their eggs and males follow them to fertilize them as a group, in what can only be considered a sperm race. Sounds freaky as hell! Cheers to you, yellow perch!

The inset photo of the remora within the manta is courtesy Bryant Turffs/Marine Megafauna Foundation.

The cloacal diving study we discussed in this episode was a collaborative effort between the University of Miami Shark Research and Conservation Program, the Marine Megafauna Foundation, and the Manta Trust. Be sure to check out these organizations and programs if you want to support them or learn more!

We discussed two papers in this episode:

Yeager, E. A., J. Pate, G. M. W. Stevens, B. Turffs, and C. Macdonald. 2026. Hiding in Plain Sight: Evidence of Echeneidae Cloacal and Gill Diving Behavior in Manta Ray Hosts. Ecology and Evolution 16, no. 5: e73548. https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.73548.

In this episode, we are digging into our archives for a special release! Originally recorded in early 2025, this is an edit of a live talk we did for the ANZAAP Symposium 2025. We share how we got started, and why niche podcasts like ours are important in the science communication space. Then we close out with a mini species spotlight all about the Muskellunge! Think of this episode as a lil’ bonus for you, as we work on some more substantial episodes leading up to summer!

We’re very thankful for ANZAAP’s invite, and we love that organization! Be sure to check them out if you are an aquarium professional! Lots of great resources and a network that reaches beyond just Australia and New Zealand.

As a little visual aid for the end of this episode, please enjoy the Powerpoint slides we used during our live talk at ANZAAP! These are just photos from across the web that helped to illustrate how epic the Muskie truly is!

In this episode, the crew gets fishy with Dr. Noah Bressman, assistant professor of physiology at Salisbury University in Maryland. There's so much to discuss! From fishing to fishkeeping, to invasive species, to cool art, Noah’s life is all about fish! Did you know that there’s multiple factors that will influence why a fish decides where to go when it leaves the water? For some fish it’s smell or taste, others will rely on visual cues, and that’s only scratching the surface! Did you know that Noah invented a word for the way neotropical armored catfish move? Hear about that and more on this week’s riveting episode.

This podcast is brought to you by the deepsea lizardfish, Bathysaurus ferox. Named for its flat, elongated head shape and slim body, the deepsea lizardfish unlocks new fears for anyone who sees them. Why? Why don't you google one of these living nightmares and see for yourself? Maybe its lifeless black eyes. Or its pale ghoulish features. Or maybe even that giant smiling mouth, lined with hordes of sharp teeth. Either way, just know that millions of these fish lurk along the bottom of deep oceans, ready to take you across the river Styx when the time comes. Cheers to you, deepsea lizardfish!

Dr. Bressman is also an artist, and he’s made a ton of incredible images of cleared and stained fishes! Be sure to check our Dr. Bressman’s art shop on RedBubble and get yourself a very cool shirt or a sticker! You can see some of his work on little skates and harvestfish below!

In this episode, the crew dives into the subject of man’s favorite aquatic pet…the goldfish! Goldfish have been around a long time. They've been given as gifts for hundreds of years. They also are similar to dogs in the way that humans have domesticated and bred them into fancy versions of their wild counterparts. We talk about goldfish history, care, their use in research and of course the many reasons why NOT to release them into the wild!

This podcast is brought to you by the ballyhoo halfbeak. While the name of this fish sounds more like an Australian expression than an actual animal, the ballyhoo looks as insane as it sounds. If you’ve ever wanted to see a tiny narwhal with a sideways tail, then look no further. And furthermore, the halfbeak’s extended mouthparts do not function as a fearsome sword, far from it. Rather they serve as some sort of sensing organ to evade prey. Cheers to you, dear fish, may you party the night away you old ballyhoo.

We learn about her life, her love of fish, freedom to pursue her fishy obsessions and her work at the museum. We then delve into common fish misconceptions. We talk about some weird species that people don't always know are fish and then talk about which animals are fish and which aren't! Come along for the ride!

This podcast is brought to you by the Berlin's bloodworm eel Ophisternon berlini. Ever wish that earthworms had eyes and a spinal cord? Meet the Berlin’s Bloodworm eel! This eel was discovered in 2024, 50-75 cm below the surface, buried in swamp mud in Costa Rica. No actual body of water was found nearby its discovery. It's pink, blind and finless, making it for all intents and purposes, a glorified worm. Cheers to you, Berlin’s bloodworm eel and welcome to the family!

In this episode, the crew gets down with bladders… but not just any bladders… swim bladders! Swim bladders are pivotal to swimming around for many fish. We cover their function, their evolution and why they can cause problems during fish disease. Surprisingly (not actually) humans have found uses for them, and even caused some species to become endangered due to overfishing. Join us as we learn together!

This podcast is brought to you by the totoaba. What’s that you say? Did you just name two musical groups from the 70s, TOTO and ABBA who wrote Africa and Dancing Queen respectively? You misheard me. I was referring to the totoaba, an endangered fish living in the Gulf of Mexico. The swim bladders of whom are considered extremely valuable on the black market for use in medicines and cosmetics. Imagine being a smuggler for something so smelly. People do it only because it is so lucrative to do so. Luckily the authorities are doing their best to stop their illegal poaching. Cheers to you, totoaba. May your swim bladders stay intact for all of time.

Due to a sudden family emergency, one of our cohosts needs to temporarily step away from their podcast role. Out of respect, love and care for our fellow cohost, we will be taking a break from posting new episodes. We’ll get back to it as soon as the time is right. We hope that you understand and can find some patience with us during this time.

While you await our triumphant return, we wanted to share a few things you could entertain yourselves with in our absence.

First off, MISS has dropped their Shark Madness brackets! Be sure to follow along on your socials of choice to see which shark wins!

You can also check out our Youtube where we have some fun streams of video games, and a previous year’s Shark Madness bracket selection!

If lectures are more your style, definitely check out this upcoming free online lecture from New England Aquarium! In the evening on March 11, they’ll be talking about larval fish aquaculture, one really important aspect of making public aquaria more sustainable. Link to register is here.

That’s it for now. We really do appreciate all of you and we’ll be back soon. Thank you for your understanding. Take care of yourselves.

Best,

The GFWI Crew

In this episode the crew interviews Tanisha La Guardia, the Animal Ambassador Coordinator at the Tennessee Aquarium. Tanisha shares her heartwarming story about her early aspirations to become a midwife and how her fear of reptiles was overcome by curiosity and eventually love. Tanisha shares her love of ambassador animals with aquarium goers and helps those around her to learn about the amazing animals that inhabit our planet!

This podcast is brought to you by the upside down jellyfish of the genus Cassiopea. Upside down jellies lay on riverbeds and shallow ocean beds, allowing the sun to reach their undersides where photosynthetic algae inhabit their tissues, creating a symbiotic relationship. These are the only known species of jellyfish that are capable of sleep. Scientists found this out by observing tiny alarm clocks all over the substrate floor next to them. Upside down jellies spend most of their adult lives laying down, which makes me insanely jealous of them. Cheers to you, Cassiopea.
