My story is complicated. I come from complicated ancestors. I am the end result of many ancestors. The truth so is every human being on the face of this place they call by many names but is truly our Mother in this lifetime and existence. We all come from a very complicated history of ancestors.

I look like my paternal grandmother. She looks like her cousin, Caroline Bradby Cook of the Pamunkey Nation.

My grandmother never really spoke very much about her ancestry and where she came from. I knew that she was not ordinary and she did not socialize very often outside of work and church. The town she grew up in was complicated also. Bertie County, North Carolina. My grandmother’s last name was Lassiter. This name has been tied to the Tuscarora people and the Meherrin for as long as the Lassiter family has been present on this continent.

I don’t know how this happened, but I have seen lots of marriages and witnesses and many babies in families that were farmers and leaders in their communities. My grandmother never spoke of anything about her family history other than to say she missed people who had passed away occasionally.

My father was the one who insisted I understand the history of the Indian Woods in relation to our family. In the process of all of the learning of this history, I have encountered many very ugly truths. I blame no one who is living for any of these things but if I ever run into what remains of Walter Plecker on the other side of this existence, I hope our Creator allows me to take out my rage at the truths I have discovered on that entity. Jesus is forgiving. I try. That guy? Nope.
Indigenous Erasure: The Receipts

My grandmother was born in 1903. She sometimes told me stories of seeing the first automobiles and airplanes. She mostly talked about farm life and showed me how to string the beans and shuck the corn for supper. Those are pretty good skills for a kid to learn. She taught me how to use a clothesline and how to store the produce from the garden so it would keep for a very long time. She knew things they don’t teach in school. She was a peaceful place in my life.

Her lifetime was not as peaceful. She was not alive during the Indian Wars. She was alive during Plecker’s Erasure. She was alive during the time when most tribes suddenly went to 1900 census records in order to prove your ancestry…about the same time that Walter Plecker was systematically erasing or changing and reclassifying human beings. Courthouse fires in areas where Indigenous people had assimilated, joined Christian churches, found public jobs, and owned the land had the deeds that proved that this was the fact go up in smoke right along with any proof of whoe they were from any records in that county.

It’s a good thing that some family members were familiar with that tactic and stored their documents in another county for safekeeping…just in case it happened again. Smart move. Military records exist too. That erasure is now visible in the Internet Archives. Land grants. Parcels and neighbors. One of the ancestors there took so many notes and wrote so much that it’s actually part of a display somewhere in North Carolina. I believe that was William Morris of Bertie/Hertford County region. His land was very close to the border and I am not a surveyor.

Much of the Lassiter family land was lost during this time period. People of color were no longer allowed to own land. Erasure and theft undeniably. Some did not come out so terribly. Some still own land and farm in the region. Many more were again displaced and moved to the mountains and further West. The great Westward Expansion happened more than once.

My family stayed. My grandmother watched all this play out and was silent. She was Indigenous. She refused to discuss it every single time I asked. She said that it did not matter because that was a long time ago and people are just people and treat them accordingly.

My grandmother lived through a lot of things as a single mother in Bertie County of two small boys in 1934 when my grandfather vanished from Cumberland County. No one has a clue where he went. He left another family Cumberland County behind too. I’m not sure if my grandmother knew about his other family or not but I think it’s possible.

My grandmother didn’t have any help from the people of her ancestors. She was Indigenous. It wasn’t a secret. I didn’t realize what that actually meant when I was a child. She lived through the courthouse fires, the reclassification periods, working on her own sustainence in her garden and working full time at Planters Peanuts all the way until she was 80 years old. She was FIERCE.

She raised my father and his older brother in a region that still had the Colored Only and White Only signs in the older 5 & Dime shops on the main streets when I was a kid. She rarely let me speak to anyone in that town. I definitely wasn’t allowed to play with any of the other kids I may run into. I never understood until I was much older and began to learn American history. I heard the name Tuscarora and that struck me in the gut because I knew by that point that we had family related to that name and a war a long time before I was ever born.

This is my father. His name was Grover Lewis. His father was Lumbee. His mother was Tuscarora, Meherrin, & Paspahegh. The name his mother and his grandmother called him all his life was Raven. I think it suited him well.

I miss my Dad very much since he passed away last September. We did not always see eye to eye on everything in life but there was a true affection and our conversations always taught me something new. He is the one who made sure that I learned about nature and plants. He was a beekeeper. He was a birdwatcher. I never understood why he had so much hunting equipment and rarely brought home game until I was older. He said sometimes he just liked to watch them and if we didn’t really need the meat, no reason that an animal should die just for his sport.

He took me fishing. He taught me herbs. So did Mom. They made sure I understood things of the culture they could not embrace growing up in South Eastern North Carolina. My dad was born in 1932 in Hertford County, North Carolina and grew up in Bertie County, NC. My mother was born in 1942 in Franklin County, NC. They both moved to Virginia as soon as they could manage it. They raised children there until my dad left the military. They could have gone back to where they came from. They could have lived close to family. They chose, like so many others, to move to the mountains and stay there. My dad stayed there until he passed away. They moved there in about 1970 I believe.

I grew up with Cherokee music as a favorite sound in our home. We went to Unto These Hills in Cherokee NC just about every season I can remember as a child. Weekend trips to go watch people in the village make beautiful things. Admire the craftsmanship of the people. My dad quizzed me ALL the time. Did you see how they build? Our people had a different kind of house. He would tell me about how they were built. Many many things.

What we didn’t have was tribe. We had a kindred network but it was not as close as it may have been had we been closer to family members. Whenever I asked my father about the Lumbee peopole who I knew were his father’s people, he would tell me that there wasn’t much point in it. He said that things were troubled there. He wasn’t kidding. I pray for our cousins there on a daily basis.

It has been a long road for my ancestors to where I am today. About 9 generations in regards to my family since the landing of the Mayflower at Cape Cod. Some people think that to be impossible. It is verifiable fact in a couple of directions. The generations shift with each family line you look at. My family line to Jamestown is longer. 13 generations. That is still a very long time to dig back to try to find the origins of your family. The task of doing this is monumental. It is not just for me but for my grandchildren so they will have a hope of learning the culture of their ancestors and the true history of our family in America.

Many of these ancestors were also of European origins. Some were from other places. Some have been from places I have found surprising. Some had family trees that spun around on each other from what seemed like 5 directions at once. My parents both carried royal bloodlines from most of the “Houses” of Europe. The same can be said for almost anyone of European ancestry when you go far enough back into recorded human history. Some of my ancestors were monsters. Hopefully the world has reached a point where history does not ever repeat the atrocity of the past. If you watch the news it doesn’t seem to be the case. I do not know the answers.

There were many things I did not understand when I first began. I have gained a much greater understanding of my parents and my grandparents and the world in which they lived. My perspective has shifted also. It would have been nice to understand these things better as a child but I also understand that these are difficult things to discuss with anyone much less a child you are trying to protect from the worst things in human history.

The world I was born into was not as bad as it was for people of earlier generations. I a grateful for the changes that so many fought to bring into being. The era of forced assimilation officially shifted with the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978. I was five years old. Before that anyone with any drop of Indian blood was subject to removal and “education” by the State. That very act was recently challenged to the Supreme Court and they refused to hear it. I am so glad for this! Indigenous children should be able to be who they are in the land of their ancestors! They should know their aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents and great-grandparents!

My family’s origins are in Virginia. I am sure there are some that were originally in other places but those are the oldest records I could trace in America. Paspahegh.

The amount of time and research that has gone into this journey to find out what in the hell happened to my family tree and where my cousins and relatives were in my paternal lineage in particular has been many many years in the making. My parents knew who they were and where they came from.

Much of the research that was done in regards to my family tree was probably initially done by them through the LDS church where both were members. Much of my research has been synchronization with family oral history where the records failed. It took me over 20 years to find a single shred of evidence that my paternal grandfather ever even existed on paper. He was born in 1899 in Pender County, NC. His parents were the Walkers of Pender County, North Carolina.

I FOUND them. The way I found them was truly against the odds. It was a familiar face on a random video about the Pamunkey people. I didn’t go looking for them, the face of my ancestors reached out and grabbed me by the eyeballs!!! I hadn’t seen that face in MANY years but I know it like…my own. Now I know who I am and who my ancestors were.

It took me awhile to figure this out. I had a gut feeling that Caroline Bradby MIGHT be closer related than what Ancestry was telling me. Turns out I was right. I posted her image in an earlier post if anyone wishes to refer back to that. I am learning that this is not a tree I’m looking at but a very intricately woven tapestry. It explains why Caroline Bradby and my grandmother Flossie Lassiter looked so much alike..and why I look like both of them.

I’ve done a lot of research regarding my ancestry. I have managed to find some documentation. Historical articles. Family trees. I see family names in many other tribes across this continent. I wonder how many of the even know who their people really were before Jamestown.

I have been granted that gift of knowing. Now what do I do with all this? I scream into the wind because nobody wants to hear.

“Islands In The Stream” won the Single of the Year at The Academy of Country Music Awards in 1983. Sung by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, everyone fell in love with the song and the sound of their voices blended in one of the best known songs of the era. I always loved it so much and still can’t help but sing along sometimes 43 years later.

The chemistry between Kenny and Dolly was magical. People had ideas and there were often innuendos that there was something more than stage chemistry between the two. Those who witnessed this and couldn’t put their finger on it were right! They were related!

In the process of digging through my own genealogy, I discovered that I was related to Dolly Parton through the Owens family where one of my closer relatives was married to a Rogers.
This morning it occurred to me…OH! Kenny Rogers! I wondered if I could find his family and add him to my family tree as I had already done so with Dolly. Wouldn’t it be such a thing to consider if they turned out to actually be related!

While there is no way for me to know if they realized that they were distant cousins, it is certainly very fascinating that they actually are. I will never listen to that song the same way again! • Margaret’s mother was Susan Emmaline Powell 1866-1942 (Married David E. Barnhill 1857-1925)

• Sarah’s mother was Margaret Ann Taylor 1942-1916

• Sarah’s father was James Joseph Powell 1835-1876

• Margaret Ann Taylor’s 2nd great-grandfather was my 6th great-grandfather John Taylor Sr 1696-1779

• James Joseph Powell’s grandfather Douglas Powell Jr was father-in-law to my 4th great-grandfather, John Cornelius Lewis Sr 1750-1842

• John Cornelius Lewis Sr married two of Douglas Powell Jr’s daughters. They were Delilah Powell 1754-1778. Following her death, he married my 4th great-grandmother Nancy Orr 1757-1800. Following her subsequent death, the then married the second daughter of Douglas Powell Jr, this being Zilphia Powell 1780-1860. There are many children from these three marriages that carry the surname of Lewis.

• The daughter of Margaret Elizabeth Wilson is Lillie Mae Wilson 1921-2014.

My paternal grandmother’s name was Flossie Lassiter (Lewis). The following is about the Lassiter family in America. These are some of my ancestors. I have always loved the music and many things around the public figure known as Dolly Parton. I never had the pleasure to meet her in person or to even see her sing live, but her music wove its way throughout my life regardless. I recently watched the short documentary film entitled Lumbee by Grace. My father was born in Hertford County, North Carolina, and my mother in Nash County, North Carolina. Southeastern North Carolina is the original home of my family. I did not grow up in the region but spent many days in my childhood visiting my grandmothers, aunts, and uncles there, and it is a fundamental part of who I am.

One of the speakers in the documentary touched on how Lumbees recognize each other out in the world, noting that a common form of greeting is, “Which set of Walkers are you from?” I am from ALL the Walkers of the Lumber River Basin. My Walkers intersect with the Cherokee Nation, the Meherrin, the Tuscarora, and the Nansemond, to name a few of the many tribes with which our family ancestry is intertwined. Neither the efforts of Walter Plecker and others like him, nor my enrollment status changes who my ancestors were, nor does it alter the actions they took to build a better world in a place that had seen such systemic devastation. Many of my cousins still live in Southeastern North Carolina; many others moved away. The exact reasons why our specific branch left the region are still unknown to me, but having my connections to the homeland questioned becomes easier to understand the more I learn about the history of the Lumbee people.

Today, I am still trying to navigate the enrollment process—and openly questioning whether or not I want to be enrolled at all. To me, the modern process sometimes looks like a bureaucratic way of keeping count and tracking a section of humanity. Add to that the modern political complexities, tribal land sales, and ongoing environmental battles surrounding safe drinking water, and I find myself seriously questioning the actual benefit of carrying a card as an enrolled member.

Would they even let me in after a full generation has lived outside the region? What if my ancestors owned land directly adjoining Drowning Creek? What happened to their land? I wish I could ask them, but finding a living relative who knows the full, unvarnished truth is next to impossible.

It certainly doesn’t help that in almost every single community with which my family was connected, a timely courthouse fire seems to have conveniently destroyed all the vital documents. That is a striking historical pattern on its own.

Some commentators talk about the Lumbee people being mixed-race or “tri-racial,” using the same terms to describe Melungeon or Redbone peoples. I am here today to say: yes, we are mixed. Every single one of us. Our family network intersects with the broader swath of almost every race and label you can put on Americans today. My parents’ bloodlines are a rich mixture of Indigenous survivors, frontier farmers, planters, builders, scholars, plantation owners, and enslaved people. There are famous figures and royalty in the mix. We are the living evidence of the remnants of the tribes of the Eastern United States, expanding as our families moved, intermarried, and adapted within early American communities.

I am Lumbee. I am also tied by blood, marriage, and kinship to many tribes of this nation—and many tribes of many nations. Through the Owens, Messers, Williams, and Stanley families, I am a cousin to Dolly Parton. In fact, figures like Dolly, Elvis Presley, and Patsy Cline are all deeply connected to the Lumbee people through shared bloodlines and ancestral marriages. I am incredibly proud of my kindred. All of them.

Growing up separated from this deep well of cousin kinship was difficult; I always felt like a piece of me was missing. The connection is not fully restored, but by finding and communicating with amazing cousins along the way, it is getting better slowly but surely. That age-old question, “Who’s your people?” has finally been answered for me. But I am not done learning. Far from it.

I see where external tribes sometimes accuse the Lumbee of borrowing or “stealing” pan-Indian cultural elements—the Medicine Wheel, ribbon skirts, or jingle dresses. What these critics fail to realize is that Lumbee culture is, by its very nature, a blended culture born of survival. When the KKK targeted the Lumbee people, our people did not live on a protected federal reservation; they did not enjoy government protection from those assaults. The people themselves stood up, took up arms, and defended their own homes, families, and children. They have done this throughout history. For those who allege cultural appropriation, understand that these traditions were carried by generations and taught to children by grandparents and cousins as vital ways to remember and reflect our ancestors. Someone had to teach these things first.

Many things are holy to many different people. For me, I remember the colors of the Medicine Wheel in a way that isn’t strictly Indigenous, but rather stems from a song my grandmother taught me when I was very small:

“Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.

Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight…”

Grandma wasn’t extremely religious, and she didn’t fuss about much of what I did. She loved unconditionally, and she extended that grace to everyone she ever met. THAT is the ancestral tradition I will carry until my dying day. The Medicine Wheel holds its own sacred, irreplaceable space in Indigenous culture. But for me, those sacred boundaries go hand-in-hand with the universal love my mixed-race, white-presenting grandmother taught me first. It is a lesson that has helped me navigate this genealogical journey every step of the way. Whatever name you call our Creator, the sentiment remains identical: balance in all things, and absolute equality in the eyes of the Almighty.

How do I identify myself? I am descended from healers, weavers, builders, farmers, and matriarchs. I am born of the First Peoples of America, the Nordics, scholars, pirates, and the kings and queens of old. I am human. I do not fit the boxes on their bureaucratic forms.

Front Lines of the Water War: People vs. PFAFs

In recent days, some of the public videos of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina’s tribal meetings have been removed. Replacing them are instructions on how enrolled tribal members may access these meetings online, advertisements for the tribe and associated events and businesses, and public facing statements.

The most recent public statement was from Chairman John Lowery. In this video, he told how the Lumber River is sacred to the people of The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and how it is such an important waterway in the local area and to local wildlife. Chairman Loewry made certain to mention that the drinking water of the local region is not taken from the Lumber River but from many deep wells with filtration prior to being distributed to homes and local businesses. He mentioned working with many state and federal agencies for both monitoring and to address the issue of PFAFs in the water. He stated that this will be an ongoing effort and a long-time commitment to addressing the issue.

Chief Lowery has committed to both immediate action and long-term planning for The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and the formation of a Water Rights Task Force. Chairman Lowery stated that protecting the Lumbee River is more than an environmental responsibility, it is a responsibility to the people, the heritage, and the future for the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

Following a recent tribal meeting, several locals still held reservations. Many comments posted on social media centered around the lack of qualifications of those appointed to the Water Rights Task Force, those who are currently affected with illnesses in their families, and the loss of some family members in recent days due to incidents of illness connected specifically to PFAFs. There was also mention of silence from experts in relation to this issue and no actual changes having taken place as of yet, continued worries about drinking water, and no real answers having been forthcoming.

The Lumber River region has had issues recently with wells and drinking sources continuing to test outside of safe levels. Lumbees United for Accountability has also spoken recently on the issue in support of the Water Warriors and this environmental emergency facing the region.

For those currently affected, there are some natural ways to help remove these PFAs from the human body safely. PFAS elimination relies predominantly on substances containing specific gel-forming dietary fibers (such as psyllium, oats, and barley) or specific binding agents that interrupt enterohepatic circulation by trapping surfactant-like fluorochemicals. These are all verified, but you should always do your own research and consult your doctor in case of allergies or other potential conflicts.
