Rejoice. My books have arrived from the printers and they look splendid, so I will be launching the book in-store this Saturday, the 7th of November, for the reasonable price of £7. The book will also be going up on the shop’s ebay store for £10, for UK residents that can’t get to the shop.

There are plenty of copies to go around, I shouldn’t be running out any time soon, so don’t fret if you can’t get by this weekend.

This is the fourth title from my small press publishing venture and I’m very proud of it. I’m also eager to get on with the business of prepping the follow-up novel, Knight Shadow: Reprise, for a 2027 release.

For those sick of posts regarding The Weird and Violent Adventures of Swift Bear & Laxon, we’ll be back to scheduled programming next week.

With Bleeding Hearts, one of the launches from DC’s new Vertigo imprint, we learn that, viewed from the inside, zombie hordes have complex social strata, with community norms and modes of communication that are entirely indecipherable to the human survivor groups who make up the zombies would-be prey.

Against this backdrop, Poke, seemingly an average zombie, inexplicably develops empathy for the once living and totally incomprehensible humans. Alas, he helps and befriends child survivor, Rabbit, and her less-than-friendly mother. An act which is disgustingly abhorrent to his people, paving the way for the story ahead.

As with much of Camps work, this is deeply allegorical, using the setup and more than a smidge of absurdist humour, to explore the corrosive effects of cultures who barely comprehend their self-proclaimed rivals, and the treatment of those within with contrary insights to the norm.

Stipan Morian, Camp’s collaborator on breakout book, 20th Century Men, is onboard as illustrator. His style comes from the European mode of cartooning, clearly telling the story with dynamic flare, but with a scrappy edge befitting the material.

Heaps of stuff in, and the delivery came in late, so let’s get on with it.

Comics…

Punisher Showdowns: Black Widow - (Not pictured) The first in a series of one-shots which pit The Punisher against various Marvel brawlers.

Amazing Spider-Man: Halloween Special - Title says it all.

Resident Evil: Death Island - A manga tie-in to the popular game.

Also in… GODZILLA LIBRARY COLLECTION VOL07, MORTAL THOR VOL02, TRANSFORMERS UK COMPENDIUM BOOK 02, ABSOLUTE FLASH #20, ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #6, AVENGERS ARMAGEDDON #5, CREEPSHOW VOL 05 #2, DOOMQUEST #5, GUNSLINGER SPAWN #59, HELLBOY IN HELL NOTHING BUT BLOOD #1, INGLORIOUS X-FORCE #1, KING SPAWN #60, LOBO #8, MARC SPECTOR MOON KNIGHT #9, MARVEL ZOMBIES WAR ZONE #2, MILES MORALES SPIDER-MAN #3, NEW TITANS #40, NIGHTWING #143, UNCANNY X-MEN #37, WONDER WOMAN #38, X-MEN UNITED #8, YOUNG HELLBOY THRILLING SKY ADVENTURES #4 and, as always, a bunch more.

His latest outing comes from DC’s reignited Vertigo line, with artist Steve Pugh, reforming the team that brought us the brilliant Peacemaker: Tries Hard! Typically, it features an arsehole lead, a hitman, Eddie Stallion, who, after breaking the rules of the assassin cabal he belongs to, goes on the run to a nowhere, rundown town to hide out with the terminally ill father who hates him.

The town is victim to organised crime thanks to cancelled cartoonist-turned-mob boss, so not only does Eddie have to fend off his fellow assassins, but also the local hoods, while his crap attitude makes the townspeople’s lives worse. It’s sarcastic, absurd and hilarious, channelling Garth Ennis’s Hitman while serving up plenty of Starks’s signature doofus characters.

Pugh’s realist art style shouldn’t work with this type of broad humour, but some how, as with Peacemaker, it’s pitch perfect. Can’t wait for more.

Probably due to Marvel only dropping three books last week, there’s a big ol’ load of new releases today.

Comics…

Venom #1 - The beginning of an all-new Venom ongoing series.

Doom: All-in-One - Al Ewing wites a Doom story told entirely in epic double-page splash images.

Wolverine: Paradise #1 - Fan-favourite artist, Dan Panosian, roles solo on this noir-ish Wolverine mini-series.

Collections…

End of Life vol01 - The new line of Vertigo books have officially started being collected with Kyle Starks’ and Steve Pugh’s madcat effort.

I, Dragon - This stunning hardcover represents the last work of legendary comics artist (and a personal hero of mine since my teens) Juan Gimenez. I gave myself a deadline, you see. It’s my hope to get The Weird and Violent Adventures of Swift Bear & Laxon out for a Halloween day release. Obviously this is all dependent on the turnaround of the printers, but I have my fingers crossed.

Just to reiterate, this is a prose novel, not a graphic novel. It’s a horror/western, choc-full of whip-fast and ultraviolent pulp adventures. I’m calling the approach Splatterpulp.

Here’s the cover and blurb by way of a taster.

Load’s of launches today, and Marvel are so behind their new, ‘dark’, Midnight line, that they’re not actually releasing anything else this week.

Comics…

Midnight - Okay, so, I’m already running low on these due to lots a recent pull requests, but I will be getting restocks later this week or next. As it stands I have a handful of Spider-Man (variant cover) and one F4 for the shelves.

Jonah Hex #1 - As part of DC’s new wave of Next Level books, brilliant cartoonist, Michael Walsh (Silver Coin, Exquisite Corpses), will be taking on Hex’s weird western yarns.

The Demon #1 - And similarly the mad and excellent cartoonist, James Harren (Rumble, Ultramega), will be giving Etrigan the Demon an insane makeover.

The Kaiju of OZ - Another Godzilla Monsterpiece Theatre.

Also in… ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #19, ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #24, BATMAN #14, SUPERMAN THE STRANGER #2, CROWBOUND #2, MASK #5, OF THE EARTH #6, SUPERNATURAL DEAN WINCHESTER #1, SUPERNATURAL SAM WINCHESTER #1, CONAN BARBARIAN TIDES TYRANT KING #1, CONAN THE BARBARIAN #35, CONAN THE BARBARIAN AND DRAGONERO #5 and a few other bits.

If this kind of thing is your cup of tea, I have some real belters in the recommends corner.

The One Hand & The Six Fingers was released in comic form as two separate mini-series, The One Hand by Ram V and Lawrence Campbell, and The Six Fingers by Dan Watters and Sumit Kumar.

Set in a near future, the former tells a noir-ish story of a detective that is put on a murder case which has the M.O of a serial killer he put away years before. The latter follows a student who commits a murder in the fashion of a bygone serial killer. And so we follow the case from both perspectives as it descends into weirdness and becomes entirely unpredictable.

No. 1 With A Bullet takes place after the iRis Shutter contact lens innovation changes the world, enabling the wearer to experience augmented reality and social media as an in-vision lifestyle choice, while almost irradicating personal privacy due to the ability to record and broadcast. (Yes, it beat the meta glasses to the idea fully 8 years ago). Celebrity, Nash Huang, was having a bad enough time with privacy before bodies started piling up at the hands of a stalker who is uploading the crimes from their own perspective.

Written by Jacob Semahn, and drawn by the Jorge Corona (who recently saw success drawing Danial Warren Johnson’s Transformers), it takes a dark and topical subject matter and injects it with cartoony energy.

Harpy, with its maverick, bad-attitude detective on the tail of a serial killer in the distant future, is more notable for the incredible visuals than the story proper, entertaining though it may be.

Cartoonist, EPHK, mixes manga levels of stylistic character designs with breathtakingly rich tech and cityscapes that are highly inspired by urban art. The result feels very European in execution.

Okay, gang, I’m missing a box (that should be comings tomorrow) which contains this week’s trade paperback drops, but the new issues are in, and there are some big ticket items from Marvel…

Comics…

Amazing Spider-Man #1000 - It’s a massive milestone for the wall crawler, with his flagship title being the first of Marvel’s to reach 1k issues. This fat instalment includes extra stories by Noan Hawley (Fargo, Legion and Alien: Earth), J.M DeMatteis, Humberto Ramos, Frank Miller, Peach Momoko, Triple H, Ed McGuinness, Brian Bendis, Stuart Immonen and more. Not to be missed.

Alien Vs X-Men #1 - Alien Vs Avengers was huge, now ace writer Kieron Gillen pits the xenomorphs against the mutants, and Chris Claremont provides a backup story.

Amazing Venom #1 - Who’s new venom in the funky new costume? You’ll have to read the first issue of this new series to find out.

Shift - (Not pictured) Jonathan Hickman and Mike del Mundo produce another one-shot for the experimental 3W/3M sci-fi mythos.

Also in… DNX #2, FANTASTIC FOUR #17, GODZILLA CONQUERS THE MULTIVERSE #3, HAMMERFIST #2, PREDATOR VS THE PLANET OT APES #3, QUEEN IN BLACK #5, QUEEN IN BLACK VENOM UNCHAINED #3, SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #16, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #90, SORCERER SUPREME #10, ULTIMATE IMPACT REBORN #5, UNCANNY X-MEN #36, VAMPIRELLA X WITCHBLADE SPECIAL #1, VENOM #262, WONDER WOMAN 2026 ANNUAL MATRIARCH SPECIAL #1, X-MEN #38, X-MEN UNITED #7, ZATANNA (2026) #6 and, as always, a bunch more.

Regulars at the shop will have often come by to find me noodling away in my notepad or tapping away at the laptop, writing this or that story. Over the years some of this work has culminated in the completion not one, but two novels.

I’ve tried shopping them to literary agents, but I don’t seem to be getting any bites. Though they work as stand alone pieces, both of these books share a continuity I call The Superconciousness. I think they’re best and most ambitious things I’ve ever written, so, not being one to see things go to waste, I’m going to be self-publishing them as I did my graphic novels and selling them through the shop.

The first, which I plan to get out before Christmas, is called The Weird and Violent Adventures of Swift Bear & Laxon, a horror-western. It’s a collection of whip-fast pulp stories featuring the titular heroes, that collectively build to a grand saga set against a larger mythos… plus there’s plenty of swearing and monster fighting.

Just to whet your appetite, here’s the teaser blurb for the book…

“They call him Swift Bear. His own people turned their back on him on account of his bein’ some sorta freak of nature, faster than any horse born an’ about the strongest sumbitch I ever seen; prone ta visions of his heathen bear-god, puttin’ him on track of unnatural abominations meanin’ nothin’ but harm. I go by Mark Laxon, previous a no-good cur, but seekin’ redemption I’d partnered with ol’ Swift Bear to roam the land an’ hunt creatures from Satan’s own asshole.”

Watch this space.

It’s a bumper crop today, a good mixed-bag of stuffs.

Comics…

The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe - A madcap crossover one-shot featuring four stories pitting the Jim Henson creations against the Marvel U.

Gambit Gone #1 - Spinning out of the recent Age of Apocalypse mini-series comes a futuristic Gambit adventure.

Star Trek #1 - Amidst IDW’s many Trek mini-series and tie-ins comes a brand new ongoing series.

Collections…

Ultimate Endgame - The final chapter of Marvel’s recent two-year Ultimate experiment.

Wiccan: Witches’ Road - Feels like this should have been out ages ago, but better late than never for the Wiccan solo series.

Nightmare Before Christmas: The Shiver of Christmas Town - Rejoice, an all-new NBX book.

Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare - Another one of Abram’s premium hardcover original graphic novel’s featuring a Marvel character. If it follow’s in the footsteps of F4 Full Circle it should be pretty special.

TMNT: The Mirage Years - From IDW’s compact range comes this 500+ page beast featuring Eastman and Laird’s OG run of turtles comics, and it’s just £13. What a bargain

And BOOM Studios begin their compact range with the Power Rangers.

ABSOLUTE FLASH #19, ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #24, FLASH #37, GUNSLINGER SPAWN #58, INFERNAL HULK VS WOLVERINE #1, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #23, KING SPAWN #59, MILES MORALES SPIDER-MAN #2, PUNISHER VS SPIDER-MAN #3, SPAWN SCORCHED #55, SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN BRAND NEW DAY #5, SPIDER-MAN/HULK FIRE AND BRIMSTONE #2, TERMINAL #3, THOR #801, WOLVERINE #28 and, as always, loads more.

As well as the show, the Kayfabe team produced excellent comics, all of which conform to their credo that each individual comic (a chapter in the collections) should be a satisfying story in its own right. A number of these titles you’ll find in the recommends corner.

On the surface, Ed Piskor’s three volume series, Red Room, is nothing but a proudly exploitative outlaw horror comic, which revels in outrageous gore. An easy sell when the comic is about people becoming embroiled in darkweb red room’s, AKA, snuff forums where torture and murder is performed for fun and profit. Beyond the shamelessly explicit imagery though is a masterclass in comics storytelling and surprisingly subtle character pieces.

A world away, thematically, is Jim Rugg’s Street Angel, an all-ages comic which sees a homeless girl use her ninja and skateboarding skills to defend the streets from evil threats and bullies. It’s a funny, fast paced and sometimes even touching comic, in which anything might happen.

Piskor really hit it big with X-Men Grand Design, which took on the challenge of retelling the first thirty years or so of X-men history in the exhaustive underground-influenced cartoon style pioneered on his previous series HipHop Family Tree. Originally executed over three volumes, the entire series is now collected into a single compendium.

Rugg picked up the baton for Hulk Grand Design. With much less lore and backstory, Rugg was able to fit the Hulk’s history into just two issues (collected in a nice, slim trade paperback), but rather than riffing on Piskor’s underground style, he opted for his own multi-media technique, which sometimes replicates the essence of a zine rather than a comic.

Challenges of Doom: Spider-Man - Doom mixes it up with with Spidey in this new Challenges oneshot.

Six of Us #1 - What would happen if the F.R.I.E.N.D.S cast got back together for a reunion and one of them was murdered. It’s an intriguing concept that this murder mystery from Tom King explores (but not with the proper cast, obviously, that’d be a licensing nightmare).

The Karem Blade - The team that brought us the brilliant and head-mashing books Little Bird and Precious Metal are at it again with this new horror series, and insanely great artist Ian Bertram is surpassing himself.

Collections…

Also in…

ABSOLUTE BATMAN VOL03, W0RLDTR33 VOL04, BATMAN BAD SEEDS GOTHAM CENTRAL #1, HELLRAISER RESS ONANISTIC RITUAL #1, MARVEL MANGAVERSE IRON KNIGHT #1, ABSOLUTE BATMAN 2025 ANNUAL #1 (back in stock), BATMAN & ROBIN YEAR ONE DYNAMIC DUOS #2, CLAYFACE CELEBRITY DIRT #3, DOCTOR STRANGE #10, DOOMQUEST #4, EVENT HORIZON INFERNO #5, FLASH #36, INGLORIOUS X-FORCE #9, IRON MAN #9, OF THE EARTH #5, PUNISHER #8, SONIC HEDGEHOG X GODZILLA #2, TRANSFORMERS #36, WOLVERINE #27, YOUNG HELLBOY THRILLING SKY ADVENTURES #3, ZATANNA #5 and, as always, a bunch more.

Punk’n' Heads, by Dave Baker and Nicole Goux, follows Hannah Lipsky, recently dumped and living hand-to-mouth after dropping out of art college. She joins a horror themed punk band and through it, friendships and hard won lessons, steadily finds the strength to piece her life back together. It’s fun and touching and alive thanks to the vibrant art of Goux.

Utown, by Cab, sees a starving artist-haven of a slum neighbourhood on the verge of gentrification thanks to the rep of those self same creatives, who will be turfed out in favour of the affluent. The story’s focus is Samuel, a perennially flakey and sometimes toxic arsehole of an artist, who must finally live up to his promises and obligations or risk losing everything. It has the energy and humour of the more down to earth segments of Scott Pilgrim.

Penny Nichols, by writers MK Reed and Greg Means, and cartoonist Matt Wiegle, is the only full-on comedy of the batch. It involves the titular character, a motivationless 20-something temp, finally finding her people when she joins a ragtag no-budget film crew as they embark on their latest slasher feature. It’s sarcastic, utterly delightful and genuinely funny.

This last one is especially close to my heart because, as some of you may know, before I bought the shop, I used to be part of a local filmmaking team who put productions together with little more than enthusiasm and the money we could scrape together doing overtime at the factory. As such I have lived rather less comedic iterations of Penny’s trials and tribulations.

For anyone interested, check out the two most notable short films that I directed, a John Constantine: Hellblazer fan film and a mocumentary about Henchmen.

Cripes! Tons of launches this time, a day late due to bank holiday. Let’s jump in.
