The question of vaccine harm has reared its ugly head again some five years down the line, and this time I haven&#8217;t gone looking for it&#8230; it sneaked up on me whilst attempting to assess excess deaths due to heatwaves. Vaccine harm is likely to affect pretty much anybody who got pranged, and is likely to manifest in many different ways, so it makes sense to look at trends in all cause death across the entire population.</p><p>However, in spanning the years there is the confounding factor of the 2020 pandemic to consider, and normally I would establish an indicator variable to mark this as an event within an ARIMA model. That&#8217;s the classic approach, but I wanted something more sophisticated along the lines of weekly excess pandemic-adjusted registered deaths in addition to a gross-level indicator.</p><p>The obvious approach here is to pull down weekly ONS data for deaths due to COVID and simply subtract these figures from total deaths. But it ain&#8217;t that ea&#8230;</p>

At 3am BST this morning I realised the same dataset could be used to explore the role of urbanisation in rise of modern diseases.</p><p>Sure, we have lifestyle, nutrition, education, and medical advances to consider (and many more besides), but I sat wondering if aspects of urban development might also correlate with the rise of certain diseases. We can&#8217;t go around claiming causality, but we sure as heck can have a look-see, followed by a bit of cogitation and cake!</p><p>Behind the scenes here at Dee Manor, I am collating historic time series that might form the backbone of a UK urbanisation index. What it boils down to is I am attempting to track how the built environment has evolved, and how these changes have influenced long&#8209;term temperature trends&#8230; and, possibly, disease trends.</p><p>A comprehensive urbanisation index woul&#8230;</p>

It is thus the winter of 2021 that leads the way, this being a time when the flu season was all mashed-up with COVID (there being no flu viruses circulating, according to the experts: a most strange affair), and being a time when rollout of an experimental new mRNA treatment was underway. </p><p>The peculiar thing about this &#8216;safe and effective&#8217; treatment is that pretty much everyone I know still suffered flu-like symptoms during the flu season, and three of my family members died shortly after receiving their mRNA booster. Apparently, that was all a coincidence, as was&#8230;</p>

Here are the very same plots:</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="iframe.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstackcdn.com%2Fimage%2Ffetch%2F%24s_%21joRq%21%2Cf_auto%2Cq_auto%3Agood%2Cfl_progressive%3Asteep%2Fhttps%253A%252F%252Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%252Fpublic%252Fimages%252Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!joRq!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!joRq!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!joRq!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!joRq!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="iframe.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstackcdn.com%2Fimage%2Ffetch%2F%24s_%21joRq%21%2Cw_1456%2Cc_limit%2Cf_auto%2Cq_auto%3Agood%2Cfl_progressive%3Asteep%2Fhttps%253A%252F%252Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%252Fpublic%252Fimages%252Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png" width="809" height="559" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:559,&quot;width&quot;:809,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:33266,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://jdee.substack.com/i/210117615?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!joRq!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!joRq!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!joRq!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!joRq!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4fdbdec-5818-48db-8f60-6f48d3ee3c7d_809x559.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image buttonBase-GK1x3M"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" class="icon-noB79L"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image buttonBase-GK1x3M"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2 icon-noB79L"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div>

A funny business for sure; and here I am, pushing numbers, hoping that land surface temperature might hold a clue. I guess we better go find out, starting with what multilayer perceptron has to say about age group mortality in relation to the national record for England &amp; Wales over the period 1920-2022.</p><p>We know that age groups flip in and out of dominance over time; with the flu striking the elderly, and then the very young, and then those who have to work for a living. So&#8230; I&#8217;d like to step back and try and get a handle on the big picture &#8211; what age group has dominated the most over this 103-year study period? Once I&#8217;ve got that nailed I&#8217;ll&#8230;</p>

This might sound groovy but it makes me uneasy, and it makes me uneasy because I&#8217;m using statistical techniques developed for <a href="iframe.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FCross-sectional_data">cross-sectional datasets</a> and not <a href="iframe.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FTime_series">time series data</a>.</p><p>Yes indeed, I&#8217;ve got nice-looking and rather interesting results on the table, but these can easily be misleading. I&#8217;ve already mentioned a potential confounding factor of warmer winters tending to be recent winters, and earlier in this series we saw mortality for influenza in sharp decline over the years. Put the two together and you&#8217;ve got bias bigger than my brunch today, and it sure was a big brunch! </p><p>Time series modelling needs to come to the rescue, and that means I&#8217;ll be reaching for my <a href="iframe.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FAutoregressive_integrated_moving_average">ARIMA</a> spanner once again. I&#8217;ll rip through that model now in next-to-no-time for I have come up with an altogether better idea of looking for a connection between influenza and unseasonable weather. Winter weather, that is, that has folk in the street saying things like, &#8220;it&#8217;s unseasonably warm for this time of year, is it not?&#8221;, or, &#8220;this is the hardest frost in living memory&#8221;. I&#8217;ll focus on daily temperature to begin with since I&#8217;ve been bashing through the Central England Temperature Record (HadCET) over on <em><a href="iframe.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjdeeclimate.substack.com%2F">John Dee&#8217;s Climate Normal</a></em> for a fair few weeks now, and what I&#8217;ll need from that dataset will pop out at the press of a couple of buttons. guide the eye and we can see that this trundles along reasonably horizontally until the year 1999 or thereabouts, after which it starts to climb. That climb over the period 2000 &#8211; 2019 means increased variability in mortality, and ChatGPT reckons this can be taken as evidence of an ineffective vaccine campaign (and possibly vaccine harm); for vaccines, as with any other intervention, will serve to reduce the variability of clinical outcomes when genuinely beneficial. One way to think of this is that instead of one bunch of people surviving and another bunch d&#8230;</p>

I ended the article by adopting a suggestion made by ChatGPT to use the 55 &#8211; 64y data as control for the jabbed 65 &#8211; 74y group. ChatGPT reckoned that divergence in mortality following the year 2000 national rollout of flu vaccines for those age 65 years and over would show that &#8220;vaccination mattered at population scale&#8221;, and that this exercise alone &#8220;would dramatically improve credibility&#8221;.</p><p>Well, I&#8217;ve now tried that suggestion and the situation is still as clear as mud! </p><p>Instead of divergence post-2000 we discovered convergence, and we figured that this could be due to the older age group surviving better in the post rollout period; but that it could also be due to the younger age group faring less well! And there&#8217;s a nasty plot twist I ought to mention&#8230; this faring better or worse may not be a real-world biological thing; it may simply be administrative artefact as coding fashions co&#8230;</p>
