During his junior year of college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Johnny studied abroad in Rome. When he left, he was looking for the adventure of a lifetime. And he got it! The experience opened his eyes to new places, cultures, friendships, and ways of seeing the world – and inspired him as a lifelong traveler. In Johnny’s memory, we want every student to have that same opportunity - and to return home safely.

Introducing Adventure Safely

The John Wesley Heathco Legacy Foundation is delighted to announce Adventure Safely: an initiative designed to make carbon monoxide awareness and protection a standard part of study-abroad preparation.

Study abroad should be an adventure — not a risk.

The scale of the opportunity is enormous. The latest national data show that more than 444,000 American students participated in global educational experiences in a single year, including nearly 300,000 who studied abroad for academic credit across more than 170 destinations.

Yet, as students cross borders, the safety standards protecting them can change dramatically.

Carbon monoxide alarms are often not required in hotels, apartments, and other accommodations outside the United States. That leaves students vulnerable to a colorless, odorless gas they may know little about—and may have no protection against.

Through Adventure Safely, we partner with colleges and universities to reach students before they leave, providing:

• Clear education about carbon monoxide risks and symptoms

• Practical safety guidance students can use wherever they travel

• Portable carbon monoxide alarms for students to take abroad

• Resources universities can incorporate into orientations, predeparture materials, and packing lists

When we send students abroad, we already prepare them for so much: safeguarding passports, staying aware of their surroundings, purchasing travel insurance, and knowing whom to call in an emergency.

Carbon monoxide safety should be on that list, too.

A portable CO alarm is small, affordable, and easy to pack. Making it a standard part of study-abroad preparation is a simple change that could help protect hundreds of thousands of students every year.

The Foundation is already working with Dartmouth College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to bring this message directly to students. And this is only the beginning.

See the impact firsthand. Hear from a student whose experience abroad demonstrates why this protection matters. Watch her story below.

Our vision is to build a national network of university partners committed to ensuring students understand the risk of carbon monoxide and have the tools to protect themselves—wherever their education takes them.

Our goal is simple: every student should be able to Adventure Safely.

Are you a parent, student, educator, or study-abroad professional? Help us spread the word. Share Adventure Safely with your community or learn how your university can partner with us.

Ziplining gets my adrenaline high from the moment I step off the platform. Imagine flying through the air where the only sounds you hear are the wind whooshing past you along with the quiet whirring of the cable above. The bundle of nerves and the brief moment of fear are replaced with pure excitement and the freedom from all constraints. I become one with nature.

My senses come alive when I zipline; even the tingling of the chapstick on my lips as the rush of air hits them. Despite the full-body harness holding me secure, I still tighten my grip on the handle until my knuckles turn white as I launch into my cannonball.

I have only experienced ziplining through the forest. I love the feeling of being surrounded by the green below that rushes past me with the beautiful blue sky above. Sometimes the canopy of trees opens up, and the sun warms my face. The scent of pine is always present in the air along with the dampness of the earth below where the sun rarely shines. I am forever looking for wildlife below. Once, I was lucky enough to see a mother moose with her calf.

Ziplining is a form of therapy for me. In those few minutes of flying through the air, I am able to set my grief aside for a while. It’s about walking with pain and beauty side by side. Johnny loved adventure, and I feel his presence every time I soar over the treetops and scream, “Geronimo.”

This month, my oldest son is going off to college for the first time.

Like every parent who has reached this milestone, I have a lot of feelings about it. I’m excited for him. I’m proud of him. I’m thinking about everything he needs - and everything I still want to tell him before we drive away. We’ve made the lists: sheets, towels, laundry supplies, chargers, clothes - all the things that somehow have to fit into one dorm room.

But because of what happened to my brother Johnny, there is something else on my list that probably isn’t on most college packing lists: a carbon monoxide alarm.

For our family, checking for CO protection has become second nature. But as my son gets ready to live away from home for the first time, I started wondering:

Will there be a carbon monoxide alarm in his dorm room?

You might assume the answer is yes. I did! But I was wrong! As it turns out, having protection from CO in college housing vary, and an alarm is not guaranteed to be inside every dorm room.

Here is what you can do to find out - and help prepare your student before move-in:

❶ CALL THE HOUSING OFFICE

Before move-in, ask: “Is there a carbon monoxide alarm in my child’s dorm room?”

If yes, ask where it is located. If no, ask two more questions:

• Where is the nearest CO detector?

• If carbon monoxide enters my child’s room while they are sleeping, what will alert them?

We – and some of our friends - have called colleges this week and shockingly heard: “There isn’t a source of carbon monoxide in the room, so a detector isn’t required there.”

That is exactly why parents need to ask. Carbon monoxide does not have to originate inside a room to enter it. In Johnny’s case, the source of the carbon monoxide that poisoned him was not in his room - or even on the same floor where he and Abby were sleeping.

❷ PACK AN ALARM

If there isn’t a CO alarm in the room, send one with your child. A portable carbon monoxide alarm is going on my son’s college packing list. If your child’s dorm room doesn’t have one, I hope you’ll add one to yours, too. Sheets. Towels. Chargers. CO alarm.

❸ TEACH

Before you leave campus, test the alarm with your child. Make sure they recognize the sound and know exactly what to do:

• If the CO alarm sounds, get outside into fresh air immediately and call emergency services.

• Don’t unplug it or remove the batteries.

• Don’t assume it’s a false alarm.

• Don’t wait to see what everyone else does. Get out.

Even if they roll their eyes or dismiss you in the moment, have the conversation anyway.

❹ SHARE & HELP

Help us make CO safety part of college move-in.

• Find the CO alarm in your child’s dorm room and take a photo.

• If the school has provided appropriate CO detection, thank them and tag them.

• If you can’t find an alarm, ask about it.

• Share the question in the parent group and encourage other parents to call housing.

• Tag the school and ask what CO protections are in place to alert students while they are sleeping.

One parent asking is a question. Thousands of parents asking can start a movement.

WHY DO WE HAVE TO ASK?

I was shocked to learn that there is no single nationwide rule requiring a carbon monoxide alarm inside every college dorm room. Requirements vary by state - and the differences may surprise you.

Maine and Vermont specifically require carbon monoxide alarms in college dormitories in both public and private universities.

But in other states, the rules are more limited. California, for example, includes dormitories in its CO law but excludes certain government-owned properties, including property owned or leased by the Regents of the University of California. Washington has some laws about CO alarms but under certain conditions, individual sleeping rooms may not be required to have its own CO alarm.

The takeaway: Don’t assume. Ask.

For 18 years, part of my job has been keeping my son safe. Now I want him to have adventures, meet new people, make mistakes, figure things out and come home with stories. I can’t go with him. But I can give him the knowledge and tools to help keep himself safe.

And because of Johnny, I hope a carbon monoxide alarm becomes one of those tools for every family.

So, this fall, I’m asking you to do this with me:

CALL. PACK. TEACH. SHARE.

Then hug them tight - and let them go - so that they can learn and adventure, safely.

Love,

Keri

Johnny’s sister

One of my favorite things about summer is planning a family adventure.

This year, Chuck and I wanted to take a trip with our daughter, Keri, her husband, and our three grandchildren. Like so many families, we spent weeks asking, Where should we go? What will everyone enjoy?

The answer came from our youngest grandson who has always dreamed of fly fishing in Montana. And so? Montana it was!

As excited as I was to begin planning, I also knew that travel looks different for me now. Ever since losing Johnny, I can’t book a place to stay without first thinking about carbon monoxide safety. It’s simply become part of how I travel - just as naturally as checking reviews or looking at photos.

What many travelers don’t realize is that Montana is one of 36 states that does not require carbon monoxide alarms in all hotels and lodging. That meant I needed to be intentional about where our family stayed.

After some research, I found Stay Montana, a vacation rental company that prioritizes guest safety and includes carbon monoxide alarms in its homes. Before making our reservation, I called to confirm that the information on their website was accurate. They assured me that the home was equipped with carbon monoxide alarms, and that gave me tremendous peace of mind.

When we arrived at our beautiful home, the very first thing we did was check.

There they were.

It may seem like a small moment, but for our family, it meant everything. Only then could we fully relax and enjoy what we had come for—time together.

And what a week it was.

We watched our grandson experience the thrill of fly fishing in Montana for the very first time. We rode horses through breathtaking landscapes. We explored the incredible beauty of Montana’s national parks. We laughed, shared meals, lit evening bonfires, made memories, and soaked up every minute together. One of my own favorite moments came when my daughter, granddaughter, and I decided to go zip lining.

As the guides carefully secured my harness and checked every buckle, I found myself thinking how similar it felt to checking for carbon monoxide alarms before entering our vacation home.

I would never step off a zip line platform without a properly fitted harness.

Why?

Because I know it keeps me safe.

Checking for carbon monoxide alarms is no different.

Neither takes away from the adventure.

Both allow you to embrace it with confidence.

As I zipped through the Montana trees with my daughter and granddaughter beside me, I felt something that I hope every family gets to experience: joy, freedom, and gratitude.

Johnny loved adventure. He loved exploring the world, trying new things, and making memories with the people he loved. Every time our family travels, we carry him with us. Honoring his legacy doesn’t mean avoiding adventure - it means embracing it thoughtfully, with just one more layer of preparation.

So, as you plan your own summer travels, I have one simple request.

Before you arrive, ask whether your lodging has working carbon monoxide alarms.

When you check in, take a moment to find them.

And then go make incredible memories:

Go fishing.

Go hiking.

Go horseback riding.

Go zip lining.

Push yourself a little beyond your comfort zone.

Adventure is one of life’s greatest gifts. By taking a few simple precautions, we can help ensure that everyone comes home safely. From our family to yours, wishing you a summer filled with unforgettable adventures.

Love,

Jill

Johnny’s Mom

Father’s Day always brings a mix of gratitude and memories for me.

When I think about dads, I think about adventure. I think about the countless ways fathers show up for their kids - teaching them to cast a fishing line, taking them hiking through the woods, coaching them on the field, cheering from the sidelines, teaching them how to drive a boat, or simply spending time together watching their favorite team play. Those moments become the memories our children carry for a lifetime.

Johnny was my number one adventure guy in the world.

We did it all together - boating, hiking, playing sports, watching sports, traveling, exploring, and making memories wherever we went. He loved life, loved being active, and loved being with the people he cared about most. Looking back, I realize those adventures weren’t just about having fun. They were about connection, trust, and love.

As fathers, one of our most important roles is being protectors. We protect our children when we teach them, guide them, and help them navigate the world. We buckle their life jackets, hold their hands on steep trails, and make sure they get home safely.

But protection also extends to the places where our families live, sleep, and vacation.

This Father’s Day, I want to encourage every dad - and every family - to take a few minutes to check the carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Make sure they’re installed, functioning properly, and replaced when needed. If you’re traveling this summer, take a moment to look for carbon monoxide alarms in your hotel, rental property, or vacation home. Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and deadly. Awareness and preparation can save lives.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, let’s adventure safely, embrace the memories, and remember that protecting our families comes in many forms. To all the dads out there: thank you for your love, your guidance, your strength, and your protection.

And to my Johnny - man, do I miss you.

Love,

Chuck (Johnny’s dad)

Carbon Monoxide Doesn’t Take a Vacation

Many people associate carbon monoxide poisoning with winter storms and home heating systems, but CO incidents occur year-round. During the summer months, risks increase from boating activities, generators, grills used too close to living spaces, and faulty appliances in vacation rentals and hotels.

Carbon monoxide is often called the “silent killer” because it is invisible, odorless, and impossible to detect without a working alarm. Symptoms can mimic common illnesses, including headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue, making it easy to overlook until it is too late.

One of the most effective ways to protect your family is ensuring carbon monoxide alarms are installed, functioning properly, and replaced according to manufacturer recommendations.

A New Family Travel Essential

As families head out on summer adventures, safety experts continue to encourage travelers to add one simple item to their vacation checklist: check for carbon monoxide alarms.

Whether you’re staying in a hotel, rental home, Airbnb, or vacation property, take a moment upon arrival to locate carbon monoxide alarms and confirm they are present. Just as we check seat belts, life jackets, and smoke alarms, CO alarms should be part of every family’s travel routine.

At the John Wesley Heathco Legacy Foundation, we believe awareness saves lives. A quick check can take less than a minute, but it could make all the difference.

This month, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, I find myself returning to some of my earliest memories with Johnny—holding him as a baby, memorizing every detail of his face, feeling that overwhelming sense of love and responsibility that only a mother knows.

From the very beginning, we do everything we can to protect our children. We check on them while they sleep, we worry, we prepare, we try to think of everything. And yet, there are dangers we cannot see.

Losing Johnny has changed the way I understand what it means to protect the people we love. If sharing our story helps even one mother, one family, avoid this kind of heartbreak, then his life continues to make a difference.

This photo is a reminder of where it all begins—the love, the hope, and the deep instinct to keep our children safe, from their very first moments and always.

Research and Insights

As we reflect on motherhood and protection this month, it’s important to recognize that safeguarding our children begins even before they are born.

Research shows that carbon monoxide—a colorless, odorless gas—can pose serious risks during pregnancy. Large-scale reviews have found that maternal exposure to air pollutants, including CO, is associated with an increased risk of stillbirth, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy.¹ Exposure has also been linked to low birth weight and impaired fetal development, with some studies suggesting that CO reduces oxygen delivery to the fetus, which may contribute to these outcomes.²

Because CO is undetectable without an alarm, exposure can occur without any warning—often from everyday sources like gas appliances, heating systems, or enclosed spaces. This makes prevention and early detection especially critical. Ensuring working CO alarms at home and when traveling is a simple but potentially life-saving step.

As mothers, families, and communities, we have the power to raise awareness about these invisible risks—and to take action to protect our children from the very beginning.

How You Can Help

If you are a mom, consider sending your children a CO alarm as a gift of love and protection. Also be sure to check the alarms in your household.

If you are expecting, check the alarms in your house. Even low-level CO can pose a risk to your unborn child.

For everyone, please continue to spread the message of keeping yourself and your loved ones safe.

We feel the absence of Johnny every day, but it can feel particularly acutely during holidays. During this season of Easter, we are grateful for the holidays we shared with Johnny—and for the hope that spring brings.

At the Foundation, we are beginning to see small miracles and signs of hope all around us. We have received countless texts, emails, and calls from many of you thanking us for the reminders to travel with CO alarms. You’ve shared stories of places that claimed to have alarms but did not—and how grateful you were to have your own. In these moments, we see our impact growing and Johnny’s legacy living on.

Please continue to share photos of your hotel rooms or your suitcase with your travel CO alarm. We would love to highlight them on social media and continue spreading awareness.

What’s New!

On March 18, Chuck Heathco (Johnny’s dad and president of the Foundation) traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with members of Congress in support of the Safe Stay Act, along with reps from Consumer Reports, the Firefighters Union, National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association and Leslie Lienemann, a carbon monoxide poisoning survivor whose experience helped inspire the Safe Stay Act.

Throughout the day, he met with several congressional offices, including Representatives Keith Self (TX), Pete Stauber (MN), Jack Bergman (MI), Randy Weber (TX), and Richard Hudson (NC), sharing Johnny’s story and advocating for federal legislation requiring carbon monoxide alarms in hotels. These conversations reinforced how inconsistent state laws remain—some states have strong protections, while others have none—highlighting the need for a national standard.

Importantly, Representatives Mike Levin (CA) and Young Kim (CA) have both signed on in support of the Safe Stay Act, demonstrating growing bipartisan momentum behind this life-saving legislation.

The message throughout the day was simple and deeply personal: this is not about politics, but about saving lives. The Safe Stay Act is a straightforward, cost-effective measure that would protect families and help prevent tragedies like Johnny’s from happening again.

We are encouraged by the support and remain committed to continuing this important work.

News to Know

This month brought a significant development in the tragic death of former Yankee Brett Gardner’s 14-year-old son, Miller. The Gardner family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Costa Rican resort where the incident occurred, shifting the case from investigation to legal accountability. Authorities have confirmed that Miller died from carbon monoxide poisoning, and the lawsuit alleges the resort failed to maintain safe conditions.

While the cause of death is now clear, the broader question of responsibility remains unresolved, with an ongoing investigation into whether the circumstances point to negligence or potential criminal liability. As this story continues to unfold, it is a sobering reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike—and a call to hold our loved ones a little closer, honoring and remembering those lost far too soon. Our hearts are with the Gardner family.

Together, we can build a safer world—one inspired by Johnny’s love of knowledge, wellness, and adventure.

Johnny was deeply curious about the world—not just how things worked, but why people and nations made the choices they did. Even as a teenager, he was often reading about international affairs, global conflict, and the history behind it. He believed that understanding different perspectives was the first step toward building peace.

In moments when our country feels divided, we often find ourselves wondering what Johnny would say. He had a rare gift for listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and seeking common ground. Johnny believed democracy works best when we stay curious about one another—when we are willing to learn, challenge our assumptions, and engage with ideas beyond our own.

That spirit continues to guide the work of this foundation.

What’s New!

Inspired by Johnny’s alma mater, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and his love of exploring the world, the Johnny Wesley Heathco Legacy Foundation is honored to begin a partnership supporting students studying abroad. Johnny studied abroad through Cal Poly, and it was one of the most transformative experiences of his life, shaping his independence, confidence, and global perspective. While Johnny’s love of travel ended in tragedy, our mission is to help ensure that other families never experience the same loss.

We will begin by supporting 13 Cal Poly students traveling to Granada, Spain, on April 3 with portable carbon monoxide alarms and safety information. Although their housing is brand new, it does not include carbon monoxide alarms, highlighting an important safety gap we hope to help address. It is an honor to help these students adventure safely as they embark on this life-changing experience.

CO Safety Tip of the Month

As many families and students prepare for spring break travel, it’s a good time to think about safety in the places we stay. Many travelers assume hotels and vacation rentals are required to have carbon monoxide detectors, but regulations vary widely across countries, states, and municipalities. In many destinations, detectors are not required at all.

Before your next trip, consider taking a few simple precautions:

• Ask your hotel or host whether carbon monoxide detectors are installed near sleeping areas

• Look for detectors when you arrive at your accommodations

• Consider traveling with a portable CO detector for added peace of mind

Portable detectors are small, lightweight, and easy to pack, making them a simple addition to your travel essentials. A device that fits in your suitcase could help protect you, your family, and fellow travelers.

Taking a few moments to think about safety when you arrive somewhere new can make all the difference.

News to Know

Our hearts are with the Salve Regina University community following the tragic death of 21-year-old student Joseph Boutros, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning during a historic blizzard in Newport, Rhode Island. Learn more here: https://www.wpri.com/news/local-news/east-bay/college-student-dies-from-carbon-monoxide-poisoning-during-blizzard-in-newport/

Authorities say Boutros went to sit in his car to charge his phone after a storm caused power outages. Heavy snowfall had buried the vehicle and blocked the exhaust pipe, allowing carbon monoxide—an invisible, odorless gas—to accumulate inside the car. He was later found unconscious and transported to Newport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Stories like Joseph’s—and Johnny’s—are painful reminders that carbon monoxide poisoning can happen in unexpected ways and in moments when people are simply trying to solve a small problem or stay safe during difficult conditions. These tragedies are preventable. Through awareness, education, and innovation, we remain committed to ensuring that more families know the risks and how to protect themselves.

In Memory of Johnny

While organizing Johnny’s paperwork, a single piece of paper fell to the floor bearing a quote that so perfectly reflects how he lived his life:

“People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. People will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou

Angelou’s words are a powerful reminder of Johnny’s legacy and how he would want all of us to live, by caring deeply for others and looking out for their well-being. At the Foundation, that belief guides our mission every day. We want people to feel safe everywhere they go, especially while traveling, so that love, connection, and joy are never cut short by a preventable tragedy.

And just as Johnny did, love them well so that they leave changed by how you made them feel.

Consumer Reports Identifies Most Effective Portable CO Alarms

As the Heathco family is so fond of saying, you can’t leave your safety in the hands of anyone else…you have to be responsible for your own safety, and you have to know when you put your head down on the pillow at night that you are protected. That’s why one of the main goals of the JWHLF is to ensure that all travelers bring a portable CO alarm with them wherever they go to ensure their safety.

Consumer Reports is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to product testing and public information. They recently endorsed the Safe Stay Act, legislation that would mandate all hotels and short-term lodging facilities install and maintain CO alarms to protect guests. They also, for the first time in their history, tested and ranked the best portable CO alarms on the market today.

We’re proud to say that not only are we working with Consumer Reports to advocate for the Safe Stay Act, but a number of the alarms they ranked at the top of their list are partners of ours, including Forensics Dectectors. Please review their list below and purchase a portable CO alarm to keep you and your loved ones safe while traveling:

Winter Brings Renewed Focus on Preventable CO Tragedies

Carbon monoxide poisonings rise during colder months when heating systems, gas appliances, and other fuel-burning devices are used more frequently, increasing the risk of dangerous CO buildup. Recent safety guidance from public health sources highlights that CO is more prevalent in winter and that thousands of Americans seek emergency care each year due to unintentional CO exposure.

Experts note that simple measures like installing and maintaining CO detectors, servicing heating systems, and ensuring proper ventilation can prevent many of these tragedies. Greater awareness, especially during winter weather and power outages, remains essential to keeping families safe from this silent and entirely preventable hazard.

JWHLF Initiative Leads to New CO Safety Innovation at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

A significant milestone in our mission took shape this month at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s technology expo, where a new carbon monoxide safety device was unveiled—the direct result of an initiative launched by the John Wesley Heathco Foundation last year. In 2024, the Foundation approached Cal Poly, Johnny’s alma mater, with a proposal to encourage students in the Engineering Department to design innovative, life-saving CO technology. The idea was rooted in Johnny’s legacy as an innovator who believed deeply in using technology to solve society’s toughest problems. One year later, that seed of an idea has borne real fruit: students – who called themselves the “Carbon Canaries” - created a novel device that advances CO detection and prevention. This tangible outcome demonstrates the power of the Foundation’s vision and investment—mobilizing young innovators, honoring Johnny’s spirit, and accelerating technological solutions that will save lives.

CO Safety Tip of the Month

November is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month.

As colder weather sets in and travel plans take shape, it’s an important time to remember a simple truth: carbon monoxide (CO) doesn’t take a vacation. At home, on the road, or abroad — CO can strike silently and without warning. That’s why this month, we’re sharing a message close to our hearts:

HEADSUP — Awareness Saves Lives

Each letter in HEADSUP reminds us of a life-saving habit:

H – Headache
CO can cause sudden or persistent headaches — don’t ignore them, especially in enclosed spaces.

E – Exhaustion
Feeling unusually tired or lethargic could be an early warning sign of CO exposure.

A – Aching muscles
Unexplained muscle aches can occur when CO prevents oxygen from reaching your tissues.

D – Dizziness
Lightheadedness, vertigo, or imbalance can indicate CO poisoning.

S – Sick stomach / nausea
Upset stomach or vomiting may seem minor but is a common symptom of CO exposure.

U – Unclear thinking / confusion
Difficulty concentrating, disorientation, or memory lapses are serious warning signs.

P – Pale or cool skin
CO exposure can affect circulation, leaving skin pale, cool, or clammy.

Additional Life-Saving Tips

• Always travel with a portable CO alarm. Small, affordable, and potentially life-saving.

• Check accommodations. Ensure rental homes, hotels, or Airbnbs have working CO alarms.

• Don’t ignore symptoms. Even mild signs should prompt immediate action: leave the space and get fresh air.

• Share the word. Awareness saves lives. Tell friends, family, and fellow travelers.

Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and deadly — but 100% preventable when we keep our HEADSUP. Every portable alarm purchased and every reminder shared saves lives. Spread the word this month — and help us protect travelers everywhere, honoring Johnny’s adventurous spirit. When you share on social media, please use the hashtag #COAwarenessMonth.

“Hello, I’m Carbon Monoxide.”

We launched a first-of-its-kind social media campaign for Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month that gives an identity to the faceless threat of carbon monoxide. Designed to inspire awareness and action, the campaign consists of short-form videos aimed at transforming the abstract, odorless hazard into the “Silent Killer,” a memorable antagonist that the public can learn to better recognize and prevent.

Here’s the initial “Silent Killer” video:

Please like, comment, and share the videos to help us reach and educate as many people as possible about the dangers of carbon monoxide. You can find us on Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Threads.

In the wake of that horrific event that devastated multiple families, Tennessee lawmakers mandated functioning detectors in rented RVs and required carbon monoxide alarms in hotels and lodging with fossil-fuel appliances or attached garages. Legislators recently passed legislation requiring carbon monoxide alarms in day care facilities.

Nothing can take away the pain of the victims’ families, but Tennessee has proved that clear carbon monoxide legislation can protect families and travelers from preventable danger.

Just like the families of those killed in Clarksville, my family knows the heartbreak that comes from senseless death. In June 2023, while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, my son Johnny and his girlfriend Abby Lutz checked into a luxury hotel for a weekend getaway. Within hours, they were nauseous and dizzy, symptoms they dismissed as food poisoning. The next morning, they were both dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. We later learned the hotel had disabled its alarms because guests complained about the noise. Had those detectors been working, Johnny and Abby would be alive today.

Sadly, these separate tragedies are not isolated. The CDC estimates that carbon monoxide poisoning kills roughly 400 Americans annually and injures many more. Far too many of these incidents happen in hotels and lodging facilities that lack adequate safety measures, including the recent deaths of three American college students staying at a hotel in Belize and the death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former MLB star Brett Gardner, at a resort in Costa Rica.

Following my son’s passing, our family established the John Wesley Heathco Legacy Foundation. Our mission is to raise awareness about carbon monoxide poisoning, develop new technologies to better protect travelers, and advocate for mandatory carbon monoxide detectors in every hotel and motel room so that what happened to my son does not happen to anyone else.

Tennessee’s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Day honors those lost in 2011, and shows how sensible legislation can save lives. Now it’s time to build that momentum into even stronger protections nationwide. Tennessee is one of just 14 states that require carbon monoxide detectors in hotels and other short-term lodging properties, leaving millions of other travelers vulnerable and making more tragedies inevitable.

Earlier this year, Reps. Angie Craig (D-MN) and Mike Levin (D-CA) introduced the Safe Stay Act, mandating the installation of compliant carbon monoxide alarms in all places of public accommodation. This proposal is a critical next step to bring the kind of protections that Tennessee has pioneered to all Americans.

On top of that, with winter approaching and many Tennessee homes still equipped with natural gas and propane stoves, awareness of carbon monoxide as a silent-but-deadly killer remains critical.

This year, Tennesseans can recognize Carbon Monoxide Awareness Day by taking a few simple steps to protect themselves:

• Know the symptoms: Carbon monoxide poisoning often starts like a mild illness, with a headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or sudden fatigue. If several people feel sick at once and there’s no smell or smoke, evacuate and seek help from a medical professional immediately.

• Travel safely: When you travel, pack a portable carbon monoxide detector. A $20–$30 plug-in or battery model with a digital display and audible alarm can fit in your suitcase and could save your life in an emergency.

• Speak to Elected Officials: Urge lawmakers to prioritize carbon monoxide awareness and prevention through public education campaigns, detector-distribution programs, and continued updates to building codes.

You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but it is a preventable killer that will continue to claim lives unless we act. Tennessee turned grief into action once before. Our family is determined to do the same by channeling loss into advocacy and awareness so that what happened to Johnny, Jim, Tim, Allison, Jon, Kathryn, and countless others never happens to anyone else.

Johnny’s love for travel was central to his life. In March 2023, he and Abby visited Japan, just months before their lives were tragically cut short by carbon monoxide poisoning while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They spoke often of Japan’s beauty, the warmth of its people, and the richness of its culture.

Travel brought Johnny joy and connection. He embraced every chance to discover new places, meet people from different cultures, and share experiences that broadened his world. Those who knew him are certain that, given more time, he would have explored nearly every country possible, fueled by his endless curiosity and sense of adventure.

Remembering Johnny’s passion for travel inspires the Foundation’s mission: to protect and educate travelers, ensuring others can continue their journeys safely and fully, just as Johnny would have wanted.

Every summer, Johnny made his way to Lake Powell—his favorite place on earth. It was his family’s annual destination to unwind, adventure, and reconnect. On one unforgettable trip, his nieces and nephews were captivated by Johnny’s stories of the epic sand villages he used to build as a kid. Naturally, Uncle Johnny spent the next two days digging a human-sized cave in the sand—just to bring that memory to life.

Tyler Bliss, Johnny’s brother-in-law, kept warning him that it wasn’t safe to crawl into, but Johnny the engineer confidently insisted otherwise. The best part? When the family returned to Lake Powell a full year later, the cave was still there. Johnny just smiled and said, “Of course it is.” That was Johnny—hands-on, endlessly creative, and always ready to turn imagination into reality.

CO Safety Tip of the Month

As you pack your bags for late-summer adventures, don’t forget the most important travel essential: your carbon monoxide (CO) detector. Whether you're headed to a hotel, Airbnb, or cabin by the lake, CO exposure is a hidden danger—especially in unfamiliar spaces. Before you book, check if your accommodations list a CO detector and then when you arrive, verify that it’s installed and working.

This August, we’re inviting 10 travelers to help us raise awareness by sending in a 10–30 second video showing you checking for a CO detector at your hotel or vacation rental. Whether it’s there—or shockingly missing—your real-life story can help save lives. Please email your video to: jochart@thepostcardagency.com

News to Know

Earlier this month, a carbon monoxide leak at a hotel in Ocean City, Maryland, sickened 18 people, including 4 who were hospitalized. The cause? A malfunctioning hotel boiler that leaked CO into parts of the building. Fortunately, a working CO alarm alerted staff in time to prevent a far worse outcome—but the reality is, many hotels and vacation rentals still don’t have detectors installed. Read more below:

• Baltimore Banner: Officials reveal cause of Ocean City hotel carbon monoxide leak that sickened 18

• WJZ: 13 people evaluated, 4 hospitalized after carbon monoxide alarm in Ocean City hotel

Stories like this are a powerful reminder: CO poisoning is preventable—but only if we take it seriously.

That’s why we’re sharing this widely and urging everyone to check their accommodations, pack their own detectors, support commonsense legislation, and speak up when safety is overlooked.

Johnny wasn’t just a visionary entrepreneur—he was also an extraordinary uncle, not only to his own nieces and nephews, including Brayden, Paisley, and Kellen, but to many of his friends’ kids as well. He had a gift for making children feel seen, important, and part of the adventure. One favorite story is when he dared Brayden to drink a bizarre mix of lemonade, ketchup, ranch, and French fries at a restaurant—offering a new pair of Nike Dunks as a prize. Brayden rose to the challenge, and Johnny proudly bought him the shoes, which he still treasures. Paisley’s favorite memories were his weekly visits that always started with steak on the grill, a lesson in healthy eating, and jacuzzi chats—often with her begging to stay up just a little longer to be with him. And it was Uncle Johnny who first taught Brayden how to DJ—where both he and Paisley likely got their musical spark.

CO Safety Tip of the Month

Summer is the perfect time to get out on the water—but boats come with hidden risks. Carbon monoxide (CO) can build up in enclosed spaces like cabins, or even on open decks near exhaust outlets, especially when the engine is idling or running at low speed.

Safety Tip: Never swim near the back of a boat while the engine is running, install marine-rated CO detectors in cabins, and always keep ventilation open. Teach children to recognize early signs of CO poisoning—headache, dizziness, nausea—and get to fresh air immediately if symptoms appear.

News to Know

In a powerful feature by Spectrum News 1, our heartbreaking loss is now becoming a national call to action. After Johnny and his girlfriend Abby tragically died from carbon monoxide poisoning while on vacation in Mexico in 2023, we are committed to turning our grief into purpose—advocating for stronger CO safety awareness, especially when traveling.

The story highlights how invisible and deadly carbon monoxide can be, particularly in places where safety regulations may be lacking. As Jill Heathco shares in the interview, “This is preventable. If someone had just told us, Johnny would still be here.” Their story is not just one of loss, but of urgent advocacy—one that underscores how easy it is to overlook carbon monoxide risks, and how education and action can save lives.

We’re deeply grateful to Spectrum News 1 for helping amplify this mission. Coverage like this is critical in getting the word out to travelers, families, and policymakers alike. Every share and conversation makes a difference.

In addition, NBC 7 in San Diego also allowed us to share how we’re using what happened to Johnny to create change and save lives. Chuck Heathco correctly said in the interview that, “No parent should have to go through this…I can only say that Johnny is smiling down on all of us doing this.”

The story detailed how, in addition to the preventable deaths caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, there are often many unreported, lifelong injuries and hotels should require detectors to protect their guests.

Finally, Travel Weekly also published a feature item about the Foundation and its efforts to create lasting, lifesaving change. Chuck said in the story that Johnny’s death, “should never have happened, and no family should have to endure the devastation that we have had to live with. While he's no longer with us, and we grieve his passing every day, we want to ensure that what happened to him does not happen to anyone else." The story also quoted a leading travel agent, who said she encourages her guests to pay $20 on a portable carbon monoxide detector to ensure their safety.
