I knew I wanted to live-react to the 2026 Hallmark Christmas movie synopses put out by People, and what better person to react with than my dear friend Dara from Dear Hallmark?

We chat about all 30-something Hallmark Christmas movies that are set to premiere this year and you’ll see my live reaction. Some we have high hopes for and others… well… we’re just hoping the actors can save the plot. Basically, we’re totally judging these movies before we’ve even seen them.

If you want Dara’s raw reactions, you can watch Part One and Part Two on YouTube.

Let me know which movies you think are going to sleigh and which ones are a big ole’ nay! Can’t wait to hear from you!

I adore Marilu Henner. I think she’s so versatile. She’s one of those actors who can switch from everyone’s favorite mom or aunt to the villain we love to hate in a Hallmark movie. And I can see Marilu playing Nathan Grant’s mom as I think that she and Kevin will have great chemistry. The problem I have isn’t with the casting, necessarily. It’s what they’ve done with the character of Nathan’s mother.

As someone who has been highly invested in When Calls the Heart, the character that has been created for Birdie Grant is unlike what has been shared in previous seasons. When Nathan first came to Hope Valley, he shared that his mother was “too old to raise a young girl” (Season 6 Episode 6 “Disputing Hearts).

First of all, Marilu Henner does NOT look like someone who would be deemed as “too old.” Second, if she’s got the energy to be considered a “well-travelled” adventurer who just returned from a church missions trip in Switzerland, you’d think she’d have the energy to help raise a young child. Also, I thought somewhere in seasons 6 or 7, they alluded to Nathan’s mom not doing well health-wise. Is it just me, or am I pulling out more asters from my recollection?

Let’s talk a little bit more about Nathan’s backstory. We know that he grew up poor, as his father was a gambler and a thief. So, my question is, how did Birdie become so well-traveled? Was that before she married Archie? Was that after Nathan took Allie full time? Where is she getting this money to be so well-traveled? I know she’s resourceful, but come on. To me, this just doesn’t align with what’s been shared about Nathan’s parents.

… But you know who was well-traveled? The Bouchards. But that’s neither here nor there.

Share

Another point that made me go “HM…” was this description: “…she rides into Hope Valley on horseback… More than ready for a schnapps and a cigar after her journey, she’ll take the chit-chat but is not much for embroidery.”

You know who else rode into Hope Valley on horseback? I’ll remind you if it’s been a while since watching Season 3, Episode 9 “Hearts in Question.”

That’s right. Charlotte Thornton.

When Brooke Shields was announced as Jack’s mom, she said this:

In my opinion, these two characters sound too similar. Both arrive in a similar manner. Both would rather be with the boys whether playing poker or drinking schnapps and smoking a pipe. Both aren’t terribly domestic from the sounds of it. Both are giving people— Birdie went to Switzerland to help a church and Charlotte helped families and children in the settlements after the flood.

I wish they’d given Birdie a more distinctive personality with, perhaps, different interests than drinking schnapps and smoking cigars. I mean, heck, if we’re going to recycle some old character traits, we could have modeled Birdie after Cat Montgomery from Season 1. She was a very dedicated mother who was a victim of her husband’s gambling. And we all loved Cat before she fell into the Hope Valley black hole.

I digress.

The point is, the character that’s been created for Birdie just doesn’t make any sense to some of us who have been longtime viewers of the show. I said this in my Season 13 Postseason Report and I’ll say it again:

Protecting that integrity means more than just moving the plot forward.

When callbacks don’t align, when important moments feel underdeveloped, or when relationships skip necessary steps, it breaks that sense of trust with the audience.

And y’all, I know I’m judging this based on ONE snippet of information that’s been provided. However, after last season, can you blame me? ASTERS, people, ASTERS.

Again, this has absolutely nothing to do with Marilu Henner because I truly believe she’ll do an excellent job as Nathan’s mother. This has everything to do with the history and the continuity of When Calls the Heart.

This is one of my favorite cozy murder mystery series on Hallmark for a few reasons. First, I think the mysteries are always a fun whodunnit without it being a psychological terror. Second, I love that Garage Sale Mysteries is different in that the main character is already married and has children. While we all love a good push and pull, will they or won’t they situation, it’s nice to see an established relationship on screen, especially on Hallmark.

While my husband is not a Hallmark watcher in the least, he has admitted to enjoying this series (and Mystery 101). That being said, you know it’s a good series if even HE is sitting down to watch without any peanut gallery comments.

Chatting with Steve Bacic who plays Jason Shannon in the series was a great time. I got to ask him about his time returning to set after all of these years, and then I ended with my one burning question: There’s something really unusual about Jason and Jennifer’s marriage: she keeps stumbling into dead bodies, and somehow their relationship remains grounded through all of it. What do you think is the secret sauce of their marriage?

Check out what Steve has to say, and then make sure you catch Garage Sale Mysteries: Murder Takes the Stage this Saturday, September 19 at 8 PM ET/7PM CT!

After a little summer break, I’m back!

While I had never intended to take a break from my Substack, real life was calling my name. Summer was filled with beach days, family time, and a much-needed break from my usual TV routine. With the “90s summer” nostalgia trend making its way around this year, I decided to do the one thing I loved doing as a child of the 90s… read books.

For my birthday, I treated myself to a Kindle Paperwhite and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! To retrain my brain to focus on the words in front of me, I started with what felt familiar… fluffy romcoms with a happy ending.

Here’s what I read this summer:

• Meet Me in the Margins by Melissa Ferguson

• Without a Clue by Melissa Ferguson

• Fake Dating My Best Friend by Leah Blair

• Date with Danger by Jenessa Fayeth

• Spies, Lies, and Alibis by Natalie Walters

I also started Emma M. Lion by Beth Brower recently and I’m planning to start The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros with one of my besties.

Share Here for the Feels

My summer reading list gave me plenty of new stories to discover, and now I’m ready to catch up on all the movies and series that have been waiting on my watchlist. And actually, just last night, I finally watched Meet Me in the Margins, which premiered earlier this summer on Great American Family. A side-by-side comparison of the book and movie is definitely coming!

At the end of the day, one of my favorite things about storytelling is that it doesn’t really matter what medium it’s told in. Whether it’s a Hallmark movie, a novel, or a feel-good TV series, I’m always chasing the same thing: characters who feel like friends, stories that leave me smiling, and those moments that make me laugh, cry, or believe in happy endings just a little bit more.

So don’t worry, I haven’t abandoned the Hallmark movies for books. If anything, this summer reminded me why I started Here for the Feels in the first place. I just found another way to experience the stories I love.

Thanks for sticking around during my little summer hiatus. Grab your favorite blanket, your favorite drink, and maybe a movie snack, because we’re back! In the meantime, tell me what I need to catch up on! Leave a comment and tell me what your favorite movie was from this summer. I’d love to hear from you!

My only knowledge of Hallmark was the card store and the random VHS tapes they sold. I remember once as a teenager perusing the movies at the Hallmark store and being very unimpressed with the selection. Whether it was my unimpressed state at that time or perhaps the media’s portrayal being “those cheesy Hallmark movies,” I truly had no interest in the style of movies.

For years, Hallmark movies stayed off of my radar. That is until I became a mom. While I was postpartum with my first child, I could no longer watch intense or action filled movies or television. And you could forget anything related to true crime or shows like NCIS. My anxiety would skyrocket and my brain would spiral into the worst case scenario. It was then I knew that the entertainment I consumed needed to be positive and uplifting.

During my maternity leave, I binged the usuals— Friends, Gilmore Girls, Fuller House, and every other fun show or movie on Netflix. When I told my best friend I needed a new show to binge through, she recommended that I watch When Calls the Heart. At first, I balked at this. I knew what they did to Willie LaHaye in the Love Comes Softly movie series (still salty, by the way), so I was pretty apprehensive about watching a series by the same series creators.

Well, plot twist— I ended up caving one day. I binged the first season of When Calls the Heart in a couple of days.

I discovered When Calls the Heart right before the premiere of the 2015 Christmas special “New Years Wish.” Knowing this, I researched the heck out of cable companies because we didn’t get the Hallmark Channel and I NEEDED to know what happened next. DirectTV happened to have a special that was oodles cheaper than what we were paying, so I switched providers. While waiting for the next season of When Calls the Heart, I discovered a whole slew of Hallmark movies that were lighthearted and fun. Sure some of them were a little silly, but that’s exactly what my heart needed during that time. That was the moment I knew this wasn’t just casual viewing. This, my friends, was the gateway into becoming a Hallmarkie.

Becoming a Hallmarkie has opened some really fun and unique opportunities. I’ve hosted and guest-hosted multiple podcasts, I’ve hosted a live panel and fan events at a Hallmark fan convention, and I’ve interviewed scores of Hallmark talent. While those opportunities have been so wonderful, the most amazing part of becoming a Hallmarkie has been connecting with hundreds of other Hallmarkies across the globe. The community of Hallmarkies is just so much fun. There’s nothing like group chats on fire because of a love triangle gone awry, poking fun at a ridiculous plot, or fangirling over some fire chemistry.

Over the years, I’ve learned that becoming a Hallmarkie is bigger than watching the cozy, feel-good movies. It’s about being part of a community that celebrates joy, love, and hope. And honestly, I can’t imagine a better plot twist than that.

I had a lot of observations upon my second and third time watching this movie and analyzing the music, the callbacks, and the color theory behind particular scenes. Of course, these are just my own interpretations and I could be totally off. Regardless, it is always fun to dig into the layers of Signed, Sealed, Delivered.

Let’s rewind to The Pilot shall we?

When Shane quit her job at the Dead Letter Office in the Pilot movie, she had barely been there a week. As she walks toward Charlie’s house, she senses that someone is behind her and is not surprised that it is Oliver. She smiles and says, “Really?” as she walks toward him.

Oliver responds and says:

“Gave you fifteen minutes to walk to the park, factored in another ten for aimless wandering, which gave me twenty-five minutes to order your skinny vanilla latte and deliver it still hot, by the time you showed up.”
- Oliver O’Toole to Shane McInerney

Despite only knowing each other for about a week, Oliver and Shane were instant kindred spirits even if they hadn’t realized it yet. Take note of their outfits. Oliver is in a grey suit and Shane is in black and red maroon pants.

Fast-forward to A Tale of Three Letters.

Leading up to the scene below, Oliver and Shane just had a massive argument in Dead Letter Office, probably the biggest blow up between these two since From Paris With Love. After Shane storms out of the office, the next scene is Oliver nearly having a panic attack thinking that she was gone.

Norman seeks Oliver out, just as he does in Higher Ground when Shane was away with no return date, and reminds Oliver that she wasn’t gone and just needed some air. Oliver, not in the best head space, says that he doesn’t know where to look for Shane. For a moment, he is doubting himself thinking that he doesn’t actually know the woman he loves. Norman reminds Oliver that he does know Shane. This was enough to reset Oliver’s headspace.

When Shane sees Oliver walk toward her, she breaks down and says, “And here I was, wondering if you know me at all,” a completely opposite reaction from when Oliver seeks her out in The Pilot.

Notice the colors of their outfits. Here, Shane is in all black and Oliver is in a grey suit, similar to the scene in The Pilot. But notice Oliver’s maroon tie. The maroon in his tie is a reflection of Shane’s outfit in The Pilot which is a reminder that yes, even when things are rocky, Oliver knows Shane. They may not be in concert at the moment, but their hearts are still knit together.

Side Note: I put together an Instagram reel merging these two scenes together on Deliver Me a Podcast if you want to see the comparison and contrast more closely. Martha Williamson (creator and executive producer) has confirmed that this scene was a callback to the Pilot, which is pretty cool!

A Tale of the First Therapy Session

True to life, the first therapy session whether solo, with your spouse or partner, or with your family is always a challenge. Each person has his or her own agenda and point of view. Each person wants to not only be seen but also heard. The same was the case for Shane and Oliver. Shane argued her case about the more economical way of washing dishes and Oliver argued his case about the aesthetically pleasing hospital-corner folded sheets. Their arguments were simply just symptoms of a much larger issue. Both were struggling to find their footing with their two opposing perspectives. Side note: Their marital struggles were foreshadowed by their tiff regarding what was considered a federal offense and “not intentional” from earlier in the movie.

Their current marital strife is reflected in the environment of the office. Oliver is sitting and fidgeting slightly whereas Shane is standing and pacing. Both have closed body language, still unwilling to see the other perspective for find a decent compromise. Looking at this scene closer, even their outfits clash with blues and rusts in the room. The lighting is darker indicating the mood in the room and reflecting the mood of these characters.

A Tale of the Second Therapy Session

We find Oliver and Shane on opposite sides of the sofa during the second therapy session and there is a lot to unpack with the colors in this scene. Take note of the greys, blues, and rusts in the painting behind them as well as on the sofa.

Diving deeper into Oliver and Shane’s outfits, the first thing that I noticed was that Oliver was not wearing a suitcoat. The second thing I noticed was that Shane was not wearing her signature necklace from her parents.

We see Oliver in all grey with a blue tie matching Shane’s blue dress. Take note that Shane’s forever necklace from Oliver is a silver matching Oliver’s grey shirt and pants.

So what does this all mean?

Oliver and Shane are beginning to find their balance once again. The accents of blue and grey in both of their outfits are symbolic showing that each are willing to compromise with the other. However, it appears that both feel the need to give up a part of themselves for the sake of the other as signified by the lack of Oliver’s suitcoat and his relaxed posture as well as Shane’s lack of her signature necklace in exchange for the ‘forever' necklace. However, the lighting in the room is brighter than the first session indicating that they are beginning to see the light.

A Tale of the Third & Final Therapy Session

After the O’Toole grandfather clock ran down, Oliver and Shane returned to marriage counseling, but this time, we see them sitting next to each other. The lighting is brighter now, and their outfits now complement the environment, merging the blues, greys, and rusts together. Shane is also wearing both of her necklaces, indicating the idea that “both and” can co-exist in a relationship. Oliver realized that nothing imploded when the clock ran down and Shane realized that she was hanging on to her wedding dress to remember the happiest day of her life. Both were hanging on to the past and the person they used to be prior to being married. Both realized that it was okay to let go of the past without changing who they are at their core.

In this last session, Calliope, their therapist, reminds them that their marriage was never in trouble to begin with as it had only been six months. They just needed a little help to get their marriage started.

We finally see Oliver and Shane in concert.

Before we get into the episode, I have to gush over the little kids. Let me just say how adorable Jack and Goldie are in this picture. *Insert all the heart eyes* Casting did such a great job with little Hyland and Ellie. And if you haven’t already listened to the interview my girls Julie and Sarah did with Kavan Smith, you should! He talks about filming the Easter scene with Ellie and it’s just precious.

Okay, my initial thoughts…

I had to watch this episode twice because the first time I did, my weak Wi-Fi reception kept the episode buffering. I was finally able to watch a second time without any interruptions and ended up taking notes since I knew what was coming. While there were many interesting components, this episode story-wise felt a little slower. You all know I like to keep it real here, so here are my hot takes on this episode.

Hot Takes

• While finally meeting a Hickam family member was interesting, the resort storyline is dragging. In the land of Hallmark, business storylines/drama is just dull. It was boring in Chesapeake Shores. It’s made fun of in Christmas movies. There have been boring business storylines in WCTH (like the railroad storyline). It just feels like we are using up precious screen time here.

• The “Who Shot Lucas” stuff was on a break this week, but I suppose that’s because we had bigger storylines to focus on this episode. I’m going to need them to hurry this storyline up or add a bit more espionage and higher stakes. The stakes are beginning to fall a bit and I need this investigation to start snowballing.

• Mike and Mei. Oh. This really hurts my heart to say this because I think the actors and the characters are quite lovely. And I like Mike and Mei together, so it’s not even that. BUT there is something about their storyline that isn’t quite jiving with me. They are super sweet and I like sweet! I’m not saying we need a ton of drama or tension with them. And I’ve even said before that in some ways I can see them akin to the Norman and Rita of Signed, Sealed, Delivered. However, I want something deeper for these two and their relationship almost seems a bit fast. I wish I could better articulate what exactly it is I feel is missing.

I will say that it was a very sweet moment between Mei and Mike leading up to their kiss as Mei boosted Mike’s confidence and self-esteem. That was probably one of the best scenes for the two characters so far. Maybe now we’ll begin to see more layers to these characters as they continue their love story.

Whew. That’s All of the Hot Takes… For Now.

I still need to write my “subtext” post I promised last week. It’s coming! And I’m actually glad I was way too busy to write it last week because BOY did we get a ton of subtext this week! So, for now, I’m going to lightly touch on some of the Nathan and Elizabeth stuff and save the subtext thoughts for the next post. (Hopefully this week if I get a minute!)

Let’s Chat About the Hope Valley Kids.

I always love the stories they write for the kids; something that we had been missing for a few seasons. This episode had a big chunk of “kid time” which was actually pretty nice. There’s the squabble between Sarah and Talia about egg dye and learning how to listen, compromise, and reconcile, which inspires Angela and Cooper to find a way for their dad to reconcile with his brother, Jacob. Angela and Cooper decide to write their uncle a note, but as their father Joseph, and then rope Allie into finding their uncle’s address. With the weaving of this storyline so far, I wonder if this will lead into Allie’s curiosity about her biological father. After all, it was quite easy for her to find Jacob Canfield.

Not so “little” Jack was also delightful in this episode as he learned more about what his mom does as a teacher. Jack tells Elizabeth that he feels like she’s everyone’s mom and Elizabeth reminds Jack that while she may be everyone’s teacher, she’s only his mom. I love Elizabeth’s interactions with Jack, especially as he’s getting older. They are so sweet and as I’ve said in the past, Erin just has such a way with the child actors on this show.

Along Came a Spider… Named Jeanette.

Well, well, well, what do we have here? Ms. Jeanette Aucoin, Lucas’ “old widowed friend from New Orleans.” Actually— she’s not old or helpless. She’s quite young… and striking. As Lee describes her much to Rosemary’s chagrin, “she could be a screen siren.” Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, is intrigued by Hope Valley’s newest visitor, but unfortunately, very few outside of Lucas get to interact with her.

We quickly learn that Jeanette wants to bid on Lucas’ resort, to which he says an immediate “heck no.” Lucas tries hard to hide Jeanette from Elizabeth, but she is determined to make her presence known and when she does, she let’s Elizabeth know that she too was betrothed to Lucas but broke it off.

Let me just pause right here.

You’re telling me that in the five seasons (using seasons because years are fluid in Hope Valley land) Lucas pursued Elizabeth, he never once told her that he was engaged before? That is kind of a big deal ESPECIALLY after you get engaged! And yes, I know, there have been three showrunners between Season 6-11, but that aside, WOW! That’s one big secret to harbor from your fiancée! I want to hear Lucas’ explanation for not disclosing to this to Elizabeth. And I have more thoughts on this, especially since there was a major outcry when Nathan “hid” the reason he was assigned to Hope Valley. I even discussed this with my husband (who does NOT like this show at all but still humors me by discussing these hypothetical situations with me.). Yes, there are more thoughts here. Stand by.

One more thought on Jeanette. I doubt this is the last time we’ll see Jeanette, but in what capacity will we see her next? Will Lucas need to rescue her? Will she stab Lucas in the back? Will she end up saving Lucas’ hind? She certainly brings out a VERY interesting side to Lucas we haven’t seen since his early seasons. I wish I had a decent prediction for her future episodes, but I don’t at the moment. Let me know what you all think!

And Then There’s the Easter Eggs.

Several months ago, well before Season 11 had any promotions, Julie and Sarah chatted with Kevin McGarry and asked him about any Easter eggs (as they do with their guests). He said that his Easter egg was… “Easter egg.”

Well, okay, Kevin McGarry sir. I see you.

So, there were in fact a lot of physical Easter eggs.

Then there was THE Easter Egg which was filled with MORE Easter eggs full of subtext. And HELLO SUBTEXT!!!

While I felt that the rest of the episode regarding the resort, the "Lucas mystery,” etc. felt slow, I will say that the Elizabeth and Nathan scenes were by far the best part of the episode and it is all in part to their heightened chemistry in these scenes where subtext is strong. Observing subtext in entertainment is fun because it goes back to that idea of dramatic irony— we, the audience, know what everyone is thinking and feeling, but the characters do not always know, but can only suspect unless said outright. Also, there is so much symbolism here and I’m sure there are many different perspectives on this. Here’s what stood out to me.

The Easter Egg = Love.

When Elizabeth balked at Nathan putting the Easter egg in the trellis, what she was really saying was that love wasn’t worth the risk, especially with the chance that she could get her heart broken again. Finding an Easter egg should be easy; therefore love should be easy.

Funny enough, Elizabeth, determined to prove to Nathan that hiding an Easter egg high in the arch trellis wasn’t worth anyone getting hurt, then slips and falls straight into Nathan’s arms. What she actually proved to herself was that by stretching oneself to reach for what seemed to be “dangerous” was not an impossible feat and there was someone to catch her when she fell.

If you notice, she was still able to grab the Easter egg, despite falling. So, in essence, she is capable of truly loving someone so deeply again. And by Nathan catching her? It’s her reminder that just because her heart was broken once before doesn’t mean it will happen again. Nathan didn’t let her fall.

Nathan later brings the Easter egg to Elizabeth, which to me is a symbol of him reminding her that he has all the love to give her (and Jack Jr.). And she accepts the Easter egg— which is symbolic of her accepting his love because “I guess sometimes a chocolate egg is worth the risk.”

I’ll pause here because I want to hear your thoughts on this! What other Easter eggs did you pick up on?

Let’s Talk About Predictions and Wishful Thinking.

I am SO EXCITED for next week’s episode, especially after the preview! It looks like Nathan will ask Elizabeth straight: “What am I to you? I mean, are we just friends?” I am just DYING here to know how this plays out.

My prediction?

In that moment, Elizabeth will give a non-answer which will cause Nathan frustration because of this dance he’s had to do the last several years. I believe that something will push Elizabeth to seek him out because at this point, the ball is in HER court. She’s had the ball in her court since Season 8 Episode 2 when Nathan professed his love. It’s now up to her to decide when and how she’s going to make her next move.

I’m betting that after this conversation, something propels Elizabeth to finally open her heart up to Nathan once and for all. And even riskier… I’m going to say that there may even be a kiss next episode. I KNOW. I KNOW. But I had my prediction for a kiss in Episode 10 before the season started. Hah! This could be all wishful thinking and I recognize that, but the signs are all there. After all, how else do you “clear up a misunderstanding?”

Thanks So Much For Reading!
