A long autumn walk through a Romanian village, where every living thing casts its vote—and a quiet question about the many voices that make a whole.

Take the Long Walk With Me

Come take a walk with me through Breb. It is a long one, the kind where the village slowly reveals itself—a lane of yellow leaves, a cow at the fence, the church on its rise, the haystacks standing in the fields like neighbors who have known each other for years.

This letter reaches you the day after election day here in the US, and I will keep well clear of politics. The village makes me think about something older and quieter beneath it all. Walk these fields, and you notice that everything here has a say. The leaves vote for their color. The cow votes for the sweetest patch of grass. The forest casts a thousand ballots of red and gold, and the old church adds its steady voice to the chorus. Nothing in Nature is silent. Every living thing gets a vote in how the season turns.

So as we walk, let that be the gentle question underfoot: what makes a village? Not the buildings, surely. A village is many different lives, each with its own voice, somehow leaning together into one shared place. The young tree and the old one. The grazing cow and the painted saint. The dirt path and the open sky. Difference upon difference, and still, a whole.

Look closely as the photographs unfold, and notice the contrasts. The wild hillside against the tidy haystack. The passing season against the permanent church. The single walker in the yellow coat against the whole broad valley. These are not contradictions. They are a village being itself—many perspectives, held in one frame.

And here is where I invite you to turn the walk inward. You are a village too. Many voices live inside you—the bold and the shy, the old habits and the young hopes, the parts that want to change and the parts that want to stay. Which of your inner voices have you let speak lately, and which have you quietly outvoted for years? What might shift if you let more of them to the table?

Change comes to a village the way it comes to a season—not all at once, but voice by voice, leaf by leaf, choice by choice. The future is built by what each small part is allowed to say. So walk with me through Breb, and listen for the chorus. Then listen, just as closely, for the one inside yourself.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

A quiet walk through a wild Romanian graveyard as the veil thins—where Nature and memory grow through the same soil, and the dead are never far.

The Secret in the Orchard

Last week I shared the apples of Breb, and asked what you hold as the apple of your eye. I kept one thing back until today.

Those apple trees were growing in a cemetery.

The orchard I walked, heavy with fruit and golden light, rises straight through a village graveyard in the Maramureș hills. Apples drop onto the graves. Wild grasses climb the wooden crosses. Vines wind around the markers, and the whole place hums with life, right on top of the resting dead. I waited to tell you because the timing is right this week. We are entering the season of thin places—Halloween, All Souls, All Saints, the Day of the Dead—when many traditions agree that the line between the living and the departed grows faint.

So come walk this ground with me, as we did on the Appian Way. No stops, no chapters—only a slow passage through the photographs, from the wooden church on the hill down through the leaning crosses and the apple trees that feed on what came before.

As you go, let the questions walk beside you. The old villages never hid their dead away behind stone walls and mown lawns. They let Nature take the graveyard back, so that every visit became a lesson: death and life are not enemies, but one long season turning into the next.

What does your own soul look like, out here in the Natural World? Where are you still a ghost—some part of your heart or spirit that remains unsettled, unfinished, wandering the halls at night? These crosses sinking into the living grass ask the honest questions. What in you feels alive this season? What feels dead, or ready to be? And what, if you are willing to look, still frightens you about your own wild Nature—and what, surprisingly, brings you peace?

One more invitation in these frames. Somewhere in your life is a person who has passed—someone you still love, still miss, maybe still argue with in your quiet moments. This is the season to remember them naturally. Not with grief alone, but with conversation. What would you ask them? What are you still learning from them? Bring that person with you as you walk. Let the apples, the crosses, and the turning leaves hold a little space for them.

Step through the gate with me. Breathe the cold, bright air. Let this wild, holy ground remind you that nothing here is ever truly lost—it only returns to the great turning of the Natural World and feeds whatever grows next.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

On love seen from every side—ripe, ready, and fallen—gathered from a wild apple orchard in Breb, Romania.

Still in Breb, Among the Apples

I am still in Breb, deep in the Romanian countryside, where the apple harvest is in full swing. Villagers pile fruit near their homes, fill rough sacks to the brim, and press sweet cider to carry them through winter. The gentle wind smells of apples.

We have a saying for what we treasure most: the apple of my eye. The thing, or the person, we love above all the rest. As I walk this wild orchard, I keep turning that phrase over in my head like a piece of fruit.

Because a real apple has many sides. Some are ripe, glowing with dew; others are gone soft in the grass. Some trees still cling to their last fruit while the leaves let go in the autumn wind. To truly cherish something, we have to see all of it—not just the bright, happy face it shows on its best day.

So this week, bring to mind your own apple of the eye. A person, a calling, a life you love. And come walk the orchard with me, ready to look at every side.

I. Holding On: The Tree That Bears the Fruit

Look first at the trees—branches still heavy with apples, leaves clinging on as autumn tries to pull them loose. The season is turning, yet they stand here, giving fruit to the very end.

No apple exists without the tree that carried it. The roots, the long summer, the weathered branches—all of it is the structure that made the sweetness possible.

Your love has a tree too. What holds up the thing you cherish—the years, the effort, the quiet tending nobody sees? Before you taste the fruit, thank the branches. They are bare and working, even as they give.

II. Ripe and Ready: Love at Its Sweetest

Now the apples themselves are ready for picking. Colorful, full, and sweet, with dew drops gathering on their skin as they grow heavy on the branch. In one, the low golden light of fall dances across the fruit's curve. This is the fullness we fall in love with—the ripe, radiant best of what we hold dear.

Let yourself savor it. When did you last really taste the sweetness of your apple of the eye, without rushing past it? The ripe moment does not last long on the branch. Notice what is golden and full in your love right now, while the light is still dancing on it.

III. On the Ground: The Fallen Side of Love

Walk on into the grass, where the fallen apples lie. Not yet spoiled, only resting on the orchard floor, waiting for a hand to gather them. We tend to step over these, our eyes fixed on the fruit still shining above.

Yet this is the fuller truth of anything we love. There is a fallen side—the hard days, the flaws, the parts that drop quietly to the ground. To cherish something wholly means kneeling to pick up these apples too, and finding they still hold sweetness, still make good cider, still belong to the harvest.

So look honestly at the fallen side of your apple of the eye. What have you been stepping over? Beauty waits in the grass for the one willing to bend down and gather it.

Taste Every Side

An apple is not only its shining face on the branch. It is the tree, the fruit, and the windfall in the grass—the whole of it, worth gathering.

So love your apple of the eye from every angle this week. Honor the branches that hold it up. Savor it while it is ripe and golden. And kneel in the grass for the fallen parts, the ones that still hold their sweetness. When you need help seeing the whole of what you love, step outside—the orchard has always known that a harvest is every apple, not only the pretty ones.

Gather it all. The sweetest cider comes from the whole harvest, not the perfect few.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

On harvest, rest, and the old art of saving up your energy before winter—gathered from the hayfields of Maramureș, Romania.

A Letter from Breb

I am writing to you from Breb, a small village in the Maramureș region of northern Romania, where life still moves at the pace of the land. Horses pull carts down the lanes. Hands do the work that machines do elsewhere. Step into these fields and you might believe you had wandered a hundred years into the past, into an older, slower way of life.

Everywhere I walk, the haystacks stand in the fields—great golden piles built by hand after the late-summer harvest, each one a quiet promise that the animals will eat through the cold months to come.

The haystacks make me think of a lost art. In a digital age, we rarely gather our own energy by hand, or set anything aside for the lean season. We burn bright and fast, then wonder why we have nothing left when winter arrives. So as we walk these fields together, let the haystacks ask you the oldest question of the harvest: how are you saving up your nature for when you will truly need it?

I. The Base: What Holds It Up

Every haystack begins with its support. Look at the foundation: a tall central stake driven into the ground, a frame of sticks holding the weight, and bright clover flowering at the base where the pile meets the earth. The structure is humble, and it is everything. Without it, the whole harvest would slump into the mud.

Your own saved energy needs a frame like this. What holds up your reserves—the sleep, the quiet mornings, the boundaries, the rituals that keep you upright when the weight piles on? These are not luxuries. They are the stake in the ground. Tend the supports, and the harvest stands.

II. The Texture: Energy Up Close

Come closer, into the hay itself. Thousands of dry stems woven together, flecked with seed, beaded here and there with morning dew. What looks like a single golden mass is countless small blades, each holding a little of the summer sun inside.

Your energy has a texture too, when you look closely. It is not one thing but many—the rest, the play, the good work, the people, the moments outdoors—each storing a little light. Which of these fibers feels dry and brittle lately, and which still holds the dew? Gather more of the ones that keep you supple through the cold.

III. The Whole Stack: The Bigger Picture

Step back now, and take in the whole of it—one haystack standing alone on a gently sloping hill, golden against the autumn grass, the land falling away beneath it. No field of dozens here. Just this single pile, built with care, holding its ground on the hillside.

There is something honest in that. A whole winter’s worth of work, gathered into one quiet shape on a hill. It does not need a crowd around it to matter. It simply stands, ready for the season ahead.

Pull back on your own life the same way. Winter comes for all of us—the hard stretch, the loss, the long dark weeks. You don't need a grand, sprawling harvest to meet it. One well-built stack, one steady store of energy gathered with care, can carry you through. What one thing are you building, quietly and well, for the winter you know will arrive?

Gather Your Hay

The people of Breb do not save their harvest in a single grand effort. They do it a little at a time, by hand, trusting that each armful will matter when the snow falls.

You can gather your nature the same way. Build the supports that hold you up. Store the energy that keeps you supple. Take the wide view, and trust the slow work of preparing. And when you need to refill the field, step outside—the Natural World has been putting away fuel for winter far longer than we have, and it teaches the old ways freely to anyone who will stand still and watch.

Gather a little hay this week. Winter will come, as it always does. Let it find you with something saved.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

Eighteen photographs from Paradise, where the first snow of October dusts the peak—and a question worth carrying up the trail: what do we see more clearly from the mountaintop?

Come Up to Paradise

A place on Mt. Rainier called Paradise earns the name twice over in early October. The summer crowds have thinned. The air turns crisp and clean. And the first light snow of the season settles across the peak, as if the mountain has drawn a white shawl around its shoulders for the coming winter.

This week I want to take you up the trail with me. No three parts, no stops for questions—only a long, quiet climb through eighteen photographs, from the meadows of fall color toward the wide blue heavens above the snow line.

So what does it mean to climb to the mountaintop? Down in the valley of daily life, our view narrows. We see the next task, the next worry, the few feet of trail in front of our boots. But height changes everything. From up high, the mountain ranges roll out to the horizon, the landscapes stretch farther than the eye can hold, and the small troubles that loomed so large below settle into their true and modest size. The climb does not shrink your life. It widens your view of it.

As you scroll through these images, I invite you to do more than look. Try to forge a relationship with each one. Linger a moment. Let the blue sky and the dusted peak and the last red and orange leaves before the tree line settle into you, the way a great view settles into a hiker who has earned it with tired legs.

Because this is the quiet secret of the mountain: to build a relationship with these wild places is to build a relationship with your own inner Nature. The peak out there and the peak within you are closer than they appear. When you learn to sit with the vastness of a mountain, you learn to sit with the vastness inside yourself—the parts of you that are steady, ancient, and far larger than any single day’s worries.

So lace up, take a slow breath of that thin, bright air, and come up to Paradise with me. Let each photograph be a step higher. And notice, as the view opens, what opens along with it inside of you.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

On veins, vigor, and the bright things that keep us alive—drawn from begonias glowing in the last warm light of fall.

What Runs Through You

On the first cool afternoon of the season, the begonias caught the low sun and lit up like stained glass. Fall was arriving, and here they were—still vivid, still full of life, drinking the last warm light of the year.

A begonia carries its life out where you can see it. The veins in the leaves, the color in the petals, the fine texture of every edge—all of it is the plant’s life running close to the surface.

We carry that too, though we tend to keep it hidden. So this week, hold this simple question as we look: what runs bright through you? What brings the oxygen back to your veins, the vigor to your days? Let the begonias show you where your own life blood flows.

I. The Leaves: Your Living Map

Look closely at a begonia leaf. Dark green, edged in fine fuzz, threaded with lighter traces that branch and split like veins—or like the bronchial tubes that carry breath deep into the body.

It maps how life moves: from the center outward, feeding every edge. Nothing is left unreached.

You hold a map like this inside you. So trace it. What carries life to the far edges of your days—the people, the habits, the small rituals that keep you breathing easy? And where has a channel gone quiet, waiting for the flow to return?

II. The Yellow Bloom: Where Joy Runs Free

Now the yellow flowers—wound tight at the center, then opening loose and wide, as a sunhat tipped back on a carefree afternoon.

There is no worry in that bloom. It simply opens to the light and lets itself be bright.

Where does that carefree energy still run free in you? Not the scheduled kind, but the loose and easy joy that opens on its own. Give it a name. Then find one small way to let it open a little wider this week.

III. The Orange Bloom: The Beauty in the Details

Closer still, to the orange flowers. Here the beauty lives in the fine print—the delicate fold of each petal, the ornate texture of the leaves, the quiet care built into every layer.

A begonia does not shine by accident. It shines because every small part is tended.

Your brightest qualities work the same way. So which details make you shine—and have you been tending them, or letting them fade in the rush? Sometimes the surest way to feed your life blood is to care for one small thing you have been leaving undone.

Let It Show

A begonia never hides what keeps it alive. It runs its color to the surface and glows for anyone who cares to look.

You can live that way too. Find your bright channels and keep them open. Let your carefree joy off its leash. Tend the small details that make you shine. When a channel runs dry, step outside—the Natural World is generous with its vigor, and it shares freely with anyone who comes close.

Show a little more of what keeps you alive. The season is turning, and the light is still warm enough to bloom in.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

A riverbank, three leaves, and an honest look at what you have been carrying—then a way to set it down.

Name What Stings

Along a quiet riverbank, I found poison ivy growing bright and unbothered. Most of us learn to fear this plant, to give it a wide berth and move on. Yet there it was, thriving at the water’s edge, doing its own steady work in the world.

This week, I want that plant to hold something for you.

Before we begin, name one thing inside you that stings. A habit that keeps its grip. A fear you tend in the dark. A worry, a grudge, a small daily annoyance that has quietly grown roots. Choose the one that asks for peace, and keep it close as we walk.

Here is the invitation, plainly: tell the truth about it. Not the tidy version you show the world—the real one. The Natural World can hold what you carry, and the poison ivy is willing to take a little of yours. Give it the thing that stings, and let the riverbank help you find your balance again.

I. The Architecture: Where It Took Root

Look first at the structure—the leaves holding fast to a patient framework of stems, each one placed with quiet precision. Nothing here is random. The plant is built to climb, to hold, to endure.

Your sting has a structure too. So trace it honestly. Where did it first take root in you? What early moment, or person, or season planted it? And notice how it holds on today—the way it climbs through your mornings, shapes your choices, and leans into the ordinary hours of your life.

You do not have to fix it yet. For now, simply see how it is built, and where it has wound itself through your days. Clear sight is the first honest step.

II. The Color: What It Feels Like

Come closer to a single trio of leaves burning red and gold. Even the plant we fear turns luminous in its season. The color does not hide. It rises to the surface for all to see.

Your sting has a color too—an emotion it paints across your days. Name the feeling underneath it. Is it anger, red and hot? Grief, heavy and low? Fear that tightens your chest before you have even risen? Feel where it lives in your body and how it colors the hours around it.

Now try something gentle. Picture handing that feeling to these bright leaves, the way you might set down a stone you have carried too long. The color can hold it. Let the plant take the emotion, and notice how your own body softens as it leaves you.

III. The Bigger Picture: Letting It Go

Step back, and the poison ivy becomes one small part of a whole riverbank—mingled with grasses, fallen sticks, and low green brush, all of it woven together and thriving. No single plant carries the scene. Each one simply belongs.

Your sting is smaller than it feels. Held up close, it can seem to be the whole of you. Set within the wider ground of your life, it becomes one plant among many—real, but no longer in charge. This is the truth worth telling: you are the riverbank, not the poison.

So let it join the larger picture. Loosen your grip, and let the thing that stings settle back into the ground, where the Natural World knows exactly what to do with what we release.

Give It to the River

Here is your practice for the week, and it is a simple one. Find a quiet patch of the Natural World—a park bench, a garden, a riverbank of your own—and sit still for five to twenty minutes.

Bring the thing that stings. Tell the truth about it, silently or aloud. Then, breath by breath, offer it outward—to the trees, the water, the bright and unbothered leaves. You are not burying it or pretending it away. You are handing it to something far older and stronger than your worry, and trusting Nature to help you carry it.

Even poison ivy has a gift to give. It can teach you that the things we fear most are often ready to help, the moment we stop running and start telling the truth.

Go sit by the river. Set it down. Come back lighter.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

As summer fades, the sunflower shows us how to lead—when to shine, what to shed, and where to find fresh energy for the season ahead.

Choose One Field to Tend

The sunflower has always struck me as a natural leader. It stands tall in a crowd, turns its whole face toward the light, and grows a center so full of seed that birds, bees, and whole communities come to feed. Energy. Leadership. Teamwork. A sunflower does all of it without saying a word.

As summer takes its last few bows, these flowers have something to teach us about our own shine—and this week, I want to make it personal.

Before we begin, choose one part of your life to carry with you. Not your whole world—just one arena where leadership or relationship matters to you right now. Maybe it’s a partnership. Maybe it's a class you lead or take, a challenge at work, or a healing season asking you for more positivity than you feel you have. Pick one, and hold it close as we walk among the sunflowers.

Because the sunflower is going to ask you three honest questions: What is truly here? What can fall away? And where does fresh energy begin?

I. Look Closely: The Whole Flower

Walk around a sunflower, and you meet far more than a pretty face. Step to the side, and you find the thick, fibrous stalk holding everything upright. Look behind the bloom, and there is a green cradle of leaves and fine hairs, quietly doing the work no one applauds. The face gets the attention; the structure earns the height.

Your chosen scenario has the same hidden architecture. So take stock, honestly. What is the bright face here—the part everyone sees and celebrates? What is the sturdy stalk—the support that holds it all in place? And what are the small hairs and roots, the unseen efforts that keep the whole thing standing?

Leadership begins with clear sight. Before you change a single thing, simply see what is truly here. Name each part. Give the quiet supports their due. You can only lead a field you have truly seen.

II. Let It Fall: The Grace of Release

Later in the season, the sunflower changes. The petals loosen and drift down. The bright face darkens and bows. And yet the center stays generous—packed with seed, feeding the birds and the coming spring long after the show is over.

This is not failure. It is wisdom. The sunflower knows what to release, and it lets the petals go without a fight.

So bring your scenario back to mind and ask the harder question: what here has finished its season? Maybe it is an old habit that once served you and now only slows you. Maybe a story you keep telling, a grudge, a role you have outgrown, or a way of leading that no longer fits who you are becoming. What can you let fall away, so the seeds beneath can do their quiet, essential work?

Releasing is its own kind of strength. Sometimes we fortify what matters most by loosening our grip on the rest.

III. Turn Toward the Sun: The Return of Energy

Now picture the sunflower at its brightest—face lifted, petals wide, the whole plant leaning toward the light as if the sun were calling it by name. Young sunflowers even follow the sun across the sky, turning all day to catch every ray they can.

That is the posture of vitality: reaching, openly and on purpose, toward the source of your energy.

So look again at your scenario and ask where the light is. What would bring real energy back to this part of your life? Perhaps a bolder dream, spoken out loud. Perhaps clearer, kinder communication. Perhaps a small daily habit that feeds you—more rest, more movement, more time outdoors, where the Natural World can pour a little of its own vitality into you.

Name one. Choose a single thing to lift toward the light this week, the way a sunflower lifts its face to the sun. Then begin, and watch your whole field grow brighter.

Go Forward Sunward

The sunflower lives its whole life as a lesson in leadership. It sees clearly, stands tall on quiet supports, releases what its season no longer needs, and turns—again and again—toward the light.

You can lead your one chosen field the very same way. See what is truly there. Let the spent petals fall. And lean, on purpose, toward whatever gives you energy.

None of this asks you to be a different person. It asks you to be more fully yourself—rooted, generous, and bright. So carry your sunflower into the week. When the day feels heavy, turn your face back to the light and take one small, practical step toward it.

The last days of summer are the sunflower’s finest hour. Let them be yours as well.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

On shadow, surface, and the quiet beauty of what we’re too quick to dismiss.

Come Down to the Pond

Let me take you to a pond.

Not the clear, mirror-still kind. This one wears a glowing green skin across its surface—a soft film that hides the water beneath. You can’t see down. You can’t tell how deep it goes, or what moves below, and there’s a small, old unease in that: standing over water whose depths we cannot see.

But I lingered at the edge, quietly taken with it. The green glowed. The light moved across it in a way that held me. And the longer I looked, the harder it became to say where the nuisance ended, and the beauty began.

Maybe that’s how a shadow works too. The parts of us we can’t quite see into—the ones we’ve quietly named our own pond scum—can stir that same unease. We’d rather not look. And yet those covered places are often the ones most alive, holding something essential beneath a name no one chose to love.

So as we walk the water’s edge, you might find yourself wondering what in you has felt murky or hidden—and what it would be like to look a little closer, gently, without needing to clear it all away.

I. The Rock and the Green: What the Mind Can Hold

Around the pond sit the rocks—solid, gray, dependable. You can stand on a rock, measure it, trust it to stay. The mind loves a good rock.

Our minds are builders. They reach for structure and proof, for something firm underfoot before they’ll call a thing real.

Then there’s the green—floating, shifting, offering no proof and asking no permission. It simply drifts, luminous and unbothered.

I wonder if there’s room in you for both: the steady rock and the floating green. The mind that trusts only rock tends to miss half the water.

II. The Living Edge: Where the Heart Gathers

At the rim, the greenery gathers close—ferns unfurling, vine maple leaves catching the light, textured grasses leaning toward the water from every side.

Nothing grows in a straight line here. It’s all softness and tangle, and yet together these plants hold the pond, cradle it, keep it company. This is the heart’s kind of work—surrounding what matters with tenderness and support.

Notice how the still water meets its wild green border, the smooth and the textured completing each other. I imagine your own life has an edge like this: the people and things gathered around your quiet center, lending you their colors and shapes. Perhaps they hold you closer than you tend to notice.

III. Beneath the Green: The Sky in the Openings

Come closer, and the film turns out to be thousands of tiny leaves, each a small green world, gathered into a living quilt across the surface.

Up close, it stops looking like a flaw and starts looking like a design.

Still, it keeps its secrets—veiling the depths, softening whatever moves below. That’s what our shadows do as well, drawing a quiet curtain across the parts of us we’d rather not read too closely.

But the green never quite covers everything. Here and there it opens—pools of clear water in wandering, lovely shapes, their surfaces holding shadow and light and the whole sky at once. Look into one, and the blue heaven looks back, framed by the very green you almost dismissed.

I wonder what opens when your own surface parts like that—what wide and shining thing might be waiting in the clearings.

Swirl the Green

The next time you come upon a patch of your own pond scum—some shadowy, unglamorous, faintly embarrassing part of you—you don’t have to reach for the skimmer. You might simply crouch at the edge and swirl it, and watch the green move with the rock, the ferns, and the hidden water, all of it one strange and living whole.

It may not even be pond scum. Some botanist could wander by, squint at my glowing green pond, and pronounce it duckweed or algae or a fine Latin name I’d only mangle. Wonderful. The Natural World keeps its mysteries, I keep my delight, and we get along just fine.

That’s the quiet gift of it. So much of what we scrub away and try to hide was never scum at all—just life, doing what life does, holding the whole sky in its openings.

The pond doesn’t take itself too seriously. It simply glows, and lets the light do the rest.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

Still in Rome, and this week the trees had something to teach me. Three of them, three lessons—short and sweet, from a hot and dusty city that somehow still knows how to grow.

After the Rain: Rome From Above

From the top of St. Peter’s Basilica, I looked down and found something I did not expect: green. Trees and lawns, rinsed clean by a summer rain, glowing against all that ancient stone. In the middle of one of the busiest, hottest, dustiest cities on Earth, the trees were doing what trees always do—reaching toward the sun above, offering shade to everyone below.

That is the quiet genius of a tree. It cannot leave. It cannot escape the heat, the noise, or the crowds that press against it. So it grows anyway—rooted where it stands, reaching for the light, sheltering whoever passes beneath.

We are asked to do the same. Not to flee the heat and dust and chaos of our own worlds, but to grow within them—steady, upward, generous.

This week, less is more. Only three photographs, three trees, three invitations. There is an old wisdom in threes, and this city knows it well. I could have given you eighteen, as I did along the Appian Way. Instead, I want you to slow down, sit a while, and go deeper rather than wider—three trees, and three parts of you: your mind, your heart, your spirit.

(And if you look closely—somewhere in these frames, the twins Romulus and Remus are tucked away, nearly hidden, the mythic birthplace of Rome keeping quiet watch.)

Ready? Let us walk beneath them.

I. The Rounded Tree: Where Purpose Takes Shape

High above relaxed street cafes, a tree rounds itself into an almost perfect crown—shape, symmetry, a form you could nearly measure with a ruler.

The mind loves this. It measures, orders, and gives things their edges. It asks the useful question: what purpose does this serve? Purpose lives here, in the shaping.

Trees live in your mind as ideas of order—lines, forms, a sense of what belongs where. So notice today: what shape is your purpose taking? Where is your mind giving useful form to your days, and where has it simply grown wild and unpruned?

II. The Rising Tree: Where the Heart Belongs

Here a tree rises along the face of a building, its branches learning the shape of the wall, leaning into the city as much as away from it.

This is the heart’s work—belonging. The heart does not grow in isolation; it grows in relationship, shaped by what it loves and where it chooses to lean. Attachment is not weakness. It is how a living thing weaves itself into a place and calls it home.

So ask your heart: where do you belong, and to whom? How are you letting your inner life and the outer world shape each other, root and branch, without losing yourself in either?

III. The Open Sky: Where the Spirit Reaches

Step back, and the same tree meets open sky—nothing above it now but light and weather and the wide, waiting blue.

This is the spirit: the part of you that keeps reaching, no matter the drought or the storm. Resilience is not armor; it is the quiet insistence on growing toward the light regardless. And authenticity is simply this—becoming the exact tree your seed always meant to become, not a copy of the one beside you.

So where are you letting the sky be your only limit? Where are your highest branches brushing against something larger than yourself—call it the divine, call it awe, call it home?

Guiding Your Inner Tree

A whole tree does not choose between its roots, its trunk, and its crown. It needs all three, working as one.

You do too. Purpose without belonging turns hollow. Belonging without authenticity turns small. And a reaching spirit, unrooted, blows over in the first strong wind.

So here is today’s quiet challenge: tend all three. Give your mind a clear purpose. Give your heart a true place of belonging. Give your spirit room to reach. Align them, even a little, and notice how much steadier you stand.

The trees of Rome have weathered heat, dust, and centuries. You can weather this one day. Reach up. Offer shade. Grow where you stand.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

One Small Thing—Will You Tell Me?

Now, a favor- and a real one.

Almost half of you open these letters each week. You read them. And then, silence. I rarely hear a word back, and I would love to know what truly lands.

Three weeks of small experiments make this easy. Look back at the last three journeys and tell me which format you liked best:

• August 19 — Dahlias: the traditional style, three photos across three sections.

• August 26 — The Appian Way: one long walk, eighteen photos in a row.

• Today — The Trees of Rome: a single photo for each section, pared down and deeper.

Choose the format that moved you most in the poll below. One tap—that is all I am asking.

I write these letters for you, so rather than guess what serves you best, I would love for you to show me. Tell me where you are, and I will keep shaping this journey to meet you there. Your voice guides what comes next.

Or, even better, simply respond to this email with your direct feedback.

Come Walk the Old Road With Me

Greetings from Rome! I just walked all eight miles of the remaining Appia Antica under the summer sun—dusty, sweat-soaked, and still humming from it—and I wanted to bring you along. Eight miles of ancient stone, and a question that walked beside me the whole way: what legacy are we laying down, one ordinary day at a time?

Some roads are just a way to get somewhere. And then there’s the Appia Antica.

Two thousand years ago, this was the great road from Brindisi to Rome—miles of hand-laid stone that carried armies and merchants, emperors and exiles, triumph and tragedy alike. Walk this today, and you’re stepping on the very same stones they did: worn smooth in places, heaved and broken in others, lined with ruins and shade and the quiet persistence of things that have simply kept going.

This week, instead of three parts, I’d like to do something different. I want to take a walk with you—eighteen photographs, one ancient path, and the two of us moving down it together.

So lace up. And as we go, let a few questions walk beside you.

Watch the stones beneath your feet. Someone laid each one, deliberately, to make a path solid enough to last millennia. How are you building the path your own nature walks on? Where are you straining to reinvent the road—and where might you follow an example the Natural World has already laid down, sound and proven, if only you’d trust it?

Notice the trees along the way. They offer shade to walkers the planter never met—cool relief handed forward to strangers not yet born. Where in your life are you planting shade for those who come after? And what are you willing to simply let pass by, unbothered, as you keep moving?

Look for the fruit and flowers. Even here, in the dry and the dust, a fig is ripening, a bloom is throwing unexpected color, a small spring of sweetness rises where you’d least expect it. Where do you carry your own reserves of hope and color and sweetness when the road turns dusty?

And pause at the old inscriptions—words etched into stone by hands long gone, still speaking after all this time. What is your story? If you could carve a few words to reflect your wild Nature, what would they say—and are you living them today?

This is a road about legacy. Not the grand, marble kind, but the ordinary kind—the path you lay down one stone, one day, one choice at a time. So come walk with me. Let’s see what the old road has to say about the one you’re still building.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best, Matthew

On beauty, imperfection, and the many angles of a single bloom—drawn from the garden's honest light.

One Flower, Many Angles: Look Again

A dahlia is never just one thing. Face-on, it’s symmetry—petal upon petal, spiraling toward a center. Step to the side, and it becomes architecture. Move behind it, and you find stem, shadow, the quiet machinery that holds the whole display aloft.

Same flower. Different truths.

And these aren’t flawless portraits. Look closely, and you’ll see a bruised petal, a bloom just past its prime, a bud still folded and waiting. That’s not a failure of the photo—it’s the honesty of the flower. Real beauty was never the single perfect angle. It’s all of them, blemishes and buds included.

We are like this too. Your mind sees beauty one way, your heart another, your spirit another still. As you move through these images, I invite you to walk slowly around your own bloom—and let more than one angle be true.

I. The Mind’s Eye: What Do You Call Beautiful?

Here the dahlia burns lush orange, set against dark purple stems and deep green leaves. The mind loves this—the contrast, the clarity, the striking definition of one color against another.

But notice how quickly the mind decides. This is beautiful. That is not. It has its rules, its preferences, its practiced judgments.

So ask it gently: how does your mind view beauty? What has it decided is worthy of the word—and what has it quietly ruled out? Could it widen the frame to include the flawed petal, the imperfect angle? What might you find beautiful if your mind weren’t so sure it already knew?

II. The Heart’s Colors: What Flows, What Fades

Now the blooms turn purple, variegated with white—and they’re beginning to fade. The edges soften. The color loosens its grip. And still, they are beautiful.

The heart sees what the mind can miss.

So survey your heart from a few different angles, and ask it what the mind can’t answer: What is beauty to you? What colors flow through you right now? And when those colors begin to fade—as they do in every bloom, every season, every life—what do you do? Do you turn away, or can you love the flower as it softens? The fading isn’t the end of beauty. Sometimes it’s the most honest part of it.

III. The Spirit’s Angle: Beauty Without Apology

Here every angle is unconventional—yellow and red twisting together, petals curling and turning, a collage of texture and profuse, unrepeatable color. Nothing about it is tidy. Nothing about it asks permission.

This is the spirit’s kind of beauty—the kindred, untamed part of you that doesn’t bloom to match the garden.

So much of the world rewards a single, agreeable beauty—the kind that fits the row, keeps the pattern, doesn’t draw too much attention. But your spirit was never meant to be a matched set. Where does your beauty break the pattern? What in you blooms sideways, wild and one-of-a-kind? That’s not the part to prune. That’s the part to let flourish.

Welcome Every Angle: Carry the Whole Bloom

You are not one perfect face. You are the mind’s clarity, the heart’s shifting color, and the spirit’s wild, twisting bloom—all at once, all true.

So here’s your invitation: as you step into your day, welcome every side of the story. Let your mind call more things beautiful. Let your heart love what’s fading. Let your spirit bloom in its own unrepeatable direction. And when you meet beauty out in the world—or in another person—try walking around it once more before you decide you’ve seen the whole of it.

The dahlia holds every angle at once, and calls it one flower. So can you.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best, Matthew

What the textures of leaves reveal about the shape of the human heart—drawn from a season of prolific green.

Into the Green: Read the Leaves

At the height of summer, the world goes lush. Leaves crowd every branch and fill every gap—thousands of them, no two edges quite alike. Some cut clean and sharp. Some curve soft and round. Some are threaded with veins so fine they look like rivers seen from the sky.

We tend to see green as one thing. But slow down, and the green becomes a thousand textures—each leaf its own shape, its own way of catching the light.

The heart is like this too.

We speak of it as if it were a single thing—one muscle, one feeling, one shape. But your heart holds many textures: places that are sharp and clear, places that are soft and forgiving, places threaded through with feeling you don’t always have words for.

As you wander through these leaves, I invite you to trace them the way you might trace your own heart—slowly, with curiosity. What shapes live inside you? And which of them are you ready to notice again?

I. Straight Edges: Going Straight to the Heart

Some leaves are all clean lines—edges that run straight and sure, a blade that knows exactly where it ends.

There’s a kind of heart-strength in that clarity. The straight edge doesn’t hedge or blur. It knows its boundary. It goes directly to the point.

When was the last time you went straight to the heart of a matter within you—no detour, no softening, no talking yourself out of what you already knew? Our minds love the scenic route, the endless second-guessing. But the heart, when we let it, often speaks in straight lines. What truth in you is ready to be met directly today? Where might a clean edge serve you better than a blurred one?

II. Soft Curves: The Well-Rounded Heart

Other leaves round gently at the edges—no sharpness at all, just a soft, generous curve that seems to hold the light rather than cut it.

To be well-rounded isn’t to be dull. It’s to have made room. The rounded leaf has softened its edges without losing its shape—it can hold rain, cradle a drop of dew, offer shade without asking anything back.

Where in your life have your edges softened—through age, through loss, through love? What have you learned to hold gently that you once gripped hard? A rounded heart isn’t a weaker one. It’s a heart that’s been worn smooth by living, and grown more spacious for it. Where might you let yourself round a little today—soften a stance, ease a grip, make room?

III. Living Veins: How the Heart Expresses

Then there are the leaves that stop you—threaded with veins in reds and golds and deep greens, every channel visible, every line carrying life from stem to tip.

These veins aren’t decoration. They’re how the leaf lives—how it moves water, light, and feeling through its whole body and out to the edges. Nothing is hidden. The leaf wears its inner architecture on the surface for all to see.

How often do you let your feelings travel all the way to the surface? Your heart has veins too—channels of emotion running through you, wanting to move, to be felt, to be expressed. When you keep them hidden, the feeling doesn’t vanish; it only pools. What emotion has been waiting in you to be carried outward? Where might you let your heart show its color, right out to the edges, instead of holding it in the stem?

Carry Your Leaves Into the Day

You are not one texture. You hold the straight edge and the soft curve and the living vein—clarity, gentleness, and expression, all at once.

So here’s your invitation: as you step into your day, choose a leaf to carry. When you need to be direct, remember the clean edge. When you need to make room, remember the soft curve. And when something in you is asking to be felt, let it travel your veins all the way to the surface.

The forest wears all its textures at once, and calls it green. You can wear all of yours, and call it being fully, wildly alive.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best, Matthew

At the Meadow’s Edge: Let Your Eyes Soften

No one planted this. No gardener chose these colors, spaced these stems, or decided that pink should lean into yellow beside a spray of white. The meadow simply grew—each flower rising on its own terms, in its own time, exactly where the seed happened to land.

And somehow, it’s breathtaking.

We spend so much of our lives trying to arrange our beauty—to prune it, present it, make it acceptable. But the wildflower doesn’t audition. It doesn’t wait to be chosen. It blooms because blooming is its nature, and in that unguarded honesty, it becomes lovely.

As you wander through these photos, I invite you to let your eyes soften—and your gaze turn inward. Where does your own beauty grow wild, unpruned, un-permissioned? What part of you blooms not because it was told to, but because it simply must?

I. Color & Bloom: The Beauty That Announces Itself

Some beauty arrives loud. The tansy blazes yellow. The sweet pea unfurls in bold pink. These are the flowers that stop you mid-step—the ones that seem to say, here I am, in full color, unashamed.

We don’t always let ourselves be this vivid. Somewhere along the way, many of us learned to dim our brightest hues—to soften our passion, quiet our joy, tuck away the parts of us that draw the eye.

But color isn’t vanity. It’s invitation. The flower’s brilliance is how it calls the bee, feeds the exchange, keeps the whole system alive. Which of your colors have you been holding back? Is it the yellow of your warmth, the pink of your tenderness, the bold hue of a joy you’ve kept quiet? What might bloom around you if you let yourself be seen in full?

II. Seed & Structure: The Beauty You Might Miss

Look closer, and another kind of beauty appears—quieter, stranger, easy to walk past.

The thistle, gone soft and silver, releasing its seeds to the wind. The tight bud, still folded, holding its bloom in reserve. The intricate green head just beginning to form—all architecture and promise, not yet showing its face.

This is the beauty of every stage, not just the peak. The flower going to seed isn’t finished; it’s giving itself away, scattering the next season across the field. The bud isn’t behind; it’s exactly on time.

Where have you judged yourself for not being in full bloom? For the parts of you still forming—or the seasons where you feel like you’re coming apart, releasing, letting go, drifting on the wind? What if that, too, is beauty? What if the scattering is how you plant what comes next?

III. Field & Flow: The Beauty of Belonging

Step back, and the individual flowers become something larger. Pink and yellow and white and gold, grasses and seed heads and stems, all leaning and tangling together in what looks like chaos—until you feel the deeper order beneath it.

Nothing here was arranged, and yet nothing is out of place. Each flower belongs—not because it matches, but because it’s part of the whole. The meadow doesn’t ask any bloom to be like the others. It only asks it to be there.

This is the belonging your wild Nature has been trying to remind you of. You don’t have to earn your place in the field. You don’t have to be tidier, or more matched, or more managed. You belong here—in the organized chaos of the living world—simply because you grew.

Where in your life have you been waiting to be arranged before you’ll believe you belong? What might shift if you trusted, like the meadow, that your place was never in question?

Your Own Bloom: Where Does Your Wild Beauty Live?

The wildflower teaches a beauty we’ve nearly forgotten—one that doesn’t wait for permission, doesn’t hide its color, doesn’t apologize for the season it’s in, and never doubts that it belongs.

So I’ll leave you with the meadow’s question: where does your own wild beauty live—and what would it take to let it grow untamed?

The field is already blooming. And you, too, are part of the wild.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best, Matthew

At the Bramble’s Edge: Slow Down, Look Closer

There’s a plant most people walk past without a second glance—or worse, with a scowl. The blackberry bramble sprawls along fence lines and forgotten lots, thorned and tangled, claiming ground wherever it can. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re quick to call it invasive. A weed. Something to cut back.

And yet.

Reach past the thorns, and there’s sweetness—dark, warm, sun-fed fruit that feeds the bees, the birds, and anyone patient enough to look closer. Light and shadow, growing on the same cane.

That’s the quiet lesson of the bramble: the same thing your mind rushes to name a problem may be holding a gift you haven’t yet tasted. As you wander through these photos, I invite you to notice where your own perception draws the line—what you’ve labeled weed, and what might, with a softer gaze, become medicine.

I. Cane & Thorn: The Architecture Beneath the Fruit

Long before there is fruit, there is structure. All year the bramble builds—sending out canes, unfurling leaves, arming itself with thorns. It isn’t rushing toward the berry. It’s growing the whole system that makes the berry possible.

The thorns aren’t cruelty. They’re the boundary that lets the sweetness ripen in its own time.

Notice how fast the mind moves to judge that thorn. Sharp. Dangerous. In the way. But perception is a choice we make faster than thought. What if the very thing you’ve been pushing against in your life is the structure holding your growth in place? Where, right now, are you all thorn and no fruit yet—still building, still becoming? Can you let that be enough for today?

II. Blossom & Promise: The Quiet Preparation

Before the black berry, there is a pale pink flower—delicate, open, easy to overlook. It asks for nothing loud. It simply opens, and waits for the bee.

This is the preparation. No flower, no fruit. The sweetness of late summer is written in the soft petals of early summer, in a quiet exchange most of us never pause to see.

What is opening in you right now that hasn’t yet borne fruit? What tender, unfinished thing are you tempted to dismiss because it doesn’t look like the harvest yet? The Natural World doesn’t hurry the bloom into the berry. It trusts the sequence. Can you offer yourself that same trust?

III. Green, Red, Black: The Long Ripening

On a single cane, you’ll find them all at once—hard green, blushing red, deep ripe black. The bramble doesn’t shame the green berry for not being ready. It doesn’t force the red to darken before its time. Each berry ripens on its own clock, and the plant holds space for every stage.

We are rarely so gracious with ourselves.

Where are you still green—unready, and that’s alright? Where are you red—almost, nearly, so close you can taste it? And where, quietly, have you already ripened into something dark and whole without even noticing? Look again. You may be further along than your mind has let you believe.

Your Own Ripening: What Are You Growing Toward?

The bramble asks nothing of us but attention. It offers thorn and flower and fruit in the same breath—light and shadow on the same vine—and lets us decide what we’ll call it.

So I’ll leave you with the bramble’s question: what have you been quick to judge, and slow to taste? Where might a little more perception turn a weed back into a wonder?

The berries will be there when you’re ready. So will the Natural World—patient, thorned, and sweeter than you remember.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best, Matthew

Trailhead of Wonder: Step In, Look Up

There’s something about hiking a great mountain that lets clarity quietly return. We are, after all, not separate from Nature. When my mind swells with the noise of daily life, a drive to Mt. Rainier becomes a kind of medicine—steadying, vast, and true. On this hike to Shadow Lake, the mountain offered a lesson: how to balance the edges of inner beauty with the understanding that we all belong to something grander.

As you wander through these photos, I invite you to walk a similar precipice—between your own sense of self and your place within the wider currents of the Natural World. Let each image serve as a gentle nudge: where do you find perspective, and what part of you is called into awe?

I. Bones of the Mountain: Structure & Strength

Every hike begins with structure: the drive, the map, the path unfolding beneath your feet, the weather shifting above. This mirrors the quiet architecture of mind, heart, spirit. Where does your own current flow today? What might the calm waters of Shadow Lake reflect back from within you? Can you sense your inner fir trees—steady, watchful—guiding you toward a wider view?

II. Petal & Pulse: Beauty in Small Things

Each summer, mountain wildflowers ignite the slopes for a fleeting moment—feeding butterflies and brightening the alpine air. How do your own inner blossoms nourish the world around you? Which colors are rising to the surface in your life? Is it yellow for community, red for passion, or blue for the flow of feeling? As you take in these vivid scenes, let the landscape sharpen your vision inward as well.

III. Skyward Spirit: The Wide Embrace

Standing before the grandeur of a mountain, awe finds its way in. Rainier rises from the forest, both demanding and deserving wonder. Where, in your own life, does wonder take root?

Your Own Climb: How Will You Rise?

Where does your own majesty reside, quietly or boldly, in your daily life? In what ways might you honor awe—both inside yourself and out in the world? And when certainty fades, remember: places like Mt. Rainier are always there, ready to remind you.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best,

Matthew

Step In: An Invitation to Wonder

Where do I begin, and where do I end? Time, a mischievous companion, may or may not reveal. Waters arrive as gifts from the netherworld’s dream, mist gathered by sitka spruce, and wells where elves coax up brooks that bubble and gleam—becoming cavorting creeks, like laughter on a soft cheek.

Follow the hooks and nooks—see where the current chooses to play. Is it close to your heart, or wandering further away?

Part I: Secrets Beneath the Surface

The ferns turn while the water carves its secret path to the sea. Yet much of the magic stays hidden from the mortal eye. Where does the river truly emerge—and where does it tuck away its truths? What bends, eddies, and waterfalls swirl within your own wild river? Does the green of your own mind cloak the message, or dare you let it ride?

Part II: Roots That Sip the Current

Where is your thirst quenched? What is it you’re truly yearning for? Like the trees clutching banks through twists and turns, where do you gather strength for your own inner fire? Dip your toe for a sip—curious, or cautious? Are you open to the nudge, or shy of it?

Part III: Dancing With River Stones

No path is ever easy. Stones and resistance carve beauty the smooth cannot claim. Yet, all is not lost—these obstacles oxygenate the world below. How do you spark new life among your challenges? What are your rocks? Do you move them, dance with them, or flow around them—frothing up a little foam and fun?

Flow Onward: Your Turn to Wade In

Where does your river begin, and where does it wind? Do your headwaters run deep, or stretch shallow and wide? How might you ride the rapids of your inner life today

—open, wild, and free?

I’ll see you out there.

The Art of Noticing

Somewhere nearby, a riot of purple bursts through a patchwork of green. From a distance, the bouquets appear flawless—yet up close, excellence reveals itself as something wild, imperfect, and alive. It’s the quirks and rough edges that animate the garden, inviting us to wonder.

Let’s look closer. This isn’t an invitation to chase perfection but to notice excellence—messy, shifting, and honest. What does excellence look like for you today? How do you tell the difference in your own life? Zoom in on the smallest details—do they unsettle you, or spark recognition?

After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Green Threads: What Holds Us Up

Green is the quiet backbone of the garden, the scaffolding beneath the bloom. Its textures twist and layer, holding up the dense violet clusters. As you notice, pick out one detail that catches your eye. How does it echo in your heart, your spirit, or the invisible architecture that holds your day together?

Becoming: The Bloom Before the Bloom

New blooms appear as pale flecks of yellow, then blue, before tumbling into the light as purple. What patterns emerge as you watch? Where does the energy gather, and how do you nurture the fresh, unfinished parts of yourself? Is your growth tidy, or marked by wildness?

Wisdom in Full Color

Mature blooms pulse with quiet wisdom. Born from strength and pastel beginnings, they vibrate with a depth that can’t be faked. What do you notice now—a harmony of beauty, or the shadows of imperfection?

A Fresh Look at Today

How will you see today? As beauty, strength, freshness, or flaws? What would it mean to let flaws bloom into something unexpected, something worth a second look?

I’ll see you out there.

All the best, Matthew

Introduction: Scarred, Shaped, and Set Free

Driftwood is the quiet memoir of the Oregon Coast—nature’s own sculpture, shaped by wind, brine, and time. While many hurry by, these weathered forms beckon us to pause. Each grain, each scar, is a record of endurance and transformation. In their silent theater, what do you see of your own inner drift? Where do you resist the tides, and where do you surrender to them?

This photo journey is an invitation to witness the wood’s story—its twists, its wounds, its resilience. Look closely: the jagged edges and smoothed contours are not just remnants of loss, but testaments to survival.

Part I: Uprooted by the Tide

The wood here once stood firm, roots gripping soil above the restless Pacific. Over time, the persistent pull of tide and storm lays even the strongest timber low. Yet, cast down, it is not finished—it is simply called to a new journey. In your own life, what are you clutching that might be ready for release? What would it mean to trust the unseen current and let part of your old self tumble forward into change?

Part II: Mosaic of What Remains

Can you let your own “old wood”—the outgrown parts of your story—reorganize itself into new, unexpected arrangements? Driftwood litters the shore in dynamic mosaics: tangled, beautiful, alive with possibility. Growth often emerges in the cracks between what was and what is becoming. Where in your life is something new trying to take root, precisely where you feared only loss?

Part III: Standing Tall in Surrender

Some logs remain upright, monuments to past storms. Even as their living days end, they become shelter, anchor, and fertile ground for what’s next. Within your own landscape, what stands tall even in endings? Where is new energy gathering beneath the surface, fueled by what you’ve let go?

Invitation: Claiming the Shore Within

Are you drifting, or are you ready to be claimed by the shore? Will you stand, marked by tides but unbroken, and allow new forms of growth to emerge from the old?

What comes next? And is there a tiny step you can take today to bring it forward?

I’ll see you out there.

First Breath Above the Tree Line

They say that when you pause in nature, your pulse slows, and something in the world draws a little closer. That was my experience in North Cascades National Park, where the late evening glow shifted everything to amber and violet as I peered across the giant slabs of rock.

As I considered what it means to have a solid footing, a rustle in the tangled branches and low shrubs startled me. Then we locked eyes: a lone mountain goat appeared and paused.

Mountain goats embody resilience and sure footing, thriving among steep rocks with little to spare. Their hooves grip what looks impossible, and they simply trust their next step.

Let these images invite you to examine your own sense of trust. Even when the world feels like a mountain of cliffs and scarcity, how do you find your footing and move forward?

Part I: Where Stone Meets Sky

The mountains have stood for ages, shaped by sun, storm, and the patience of time. Their terrain is not easily given. What is the landscape of your own sense of peace?

Part II: Green Against the Impossible

Despite all obstacles at these heights, green still finds a way. How do you persevere and grow when the air feels thin and the climb steep?

Part III: Lessons from a Soulful Goat

Like the goat, where do you carry warmth and sure footing? Where do you stand your ground, and where can you move lightly toward what calls you higher?

Invitation: Stepping Boldly Forward

What is one sure-footed step you can take today? How might the quiet confidence of the goat help you move with trust into what comes next?

Perhaps try a few intentional steps on your own path today. What does it look like to walk with steadiness from within? Ask yourself, and see where those steps might lead.

I’ll see you out there.

All the best, Matthew
