Korfball in Suriname: One Historic Feat.

Tonight we are opening one serious historic feat in Suriname.

One tournament with the name, The IKF Pan-American Korfball Championship (PAKC) 2026.

First of all, let’s learn about korfball, the real thing.

Korfball is a mixed-gender, ball team sport with 100% gender-equal teams.

The Origin: Created in 1902 in the Netherlands by Dutch teacher Nico Broekhuysen. Korfball governed globally by the International Korfball Federation (IKF).

IKF: Founded on June 11, 1933, in Antwerp, Belgium (now headquartered in Utrecht, Netherlands).

• Global Reach: Recognized by the IOC (International Olympic Committee), with national federations operating across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

• Variants: In addition to standard indoor/outdoor court korfball, the sport features disciplines such as Beach Korfball (4v4) and wheelchair korfball.

Key Characteristics & Rules

• Team Composition: Each team has 8 players on the field at a time—split evenly into 4 males and 4 females.

• Zones & Roles: The court is divided into two zones: attack and defense. Four players from each team are in each zone. After every two goals, attackers and defenders switch roles.

• The Korf (Basket): The basket (called a korf) is placed freestanding inside the playing area on a 3.5-meter-high pole, allowing shots from all 360 degrees around it.

• No Dribbling or Running: Dribbling, running with the ball, or solo play is outlawed. Players must rely on passing and team cooperation.

• Controlled Contact: Physical contact is restricted and players cannot use contact to gain an advantage. A player who is “defended” (closely guarded by a personal opponent from the same gender) is not allowed to shoot.

Ok we get what korfball really is about and how it’s really being played.

Let’s head back to The IKF Pan-American Korfball Championship (PAKC) 2026.

This tournament will be held 8-11 October 2026 in Paramaribo, Suriname.

It is organized by the Suriname Korfball Federation in collaboration with the IKF.

The first game is tonight(Friday 9 OCT 2026) started at 8 pm, a match between Suriname and Brazil

.

Respectfully it will be a match between Suriname ranked #15 between Brazil ranked #26.

I do have to say, Suriname was ranked as high as 5th in the world and then they dipped with a fall of 7 positions, down on 15th place.

At the preconference last Tuesday, this tournament was with Columbia - could not made because of the heavy earthquake and then they reached to Curacao but Curacao could not get their paper in order on the right time, so Suriname will be playing Brazil all three days and defending the PAN AMERICAN title against Brazil.

Why is it called a historic feat?

Because it is the first time Suriname hosted the continental games.

Not only that the SKF based in Suriname , will be playing on “Homesoil” for many players.

So you might ask, where can I watch the games?

By attending the games, lol at the Anthony Nesty Sporthal or you can watch the games on real-time live scores boards online by World Korfball Official Platform

Or via video replays placed by the IKF Americas on their YouTube Channel at the end of each match.

There is more behind this story but that’s for another day.

As part of my one-year AHKCO program (Journalism & Social Media), I was given the chance to write a piece to conclude my internship at Parbode. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. I've learned from my mistakes, so I'm not giving up and will keep writing, wherever I can express my opinion and public voice.

The Suriname Major League (SML) is entering its fourth season, starting September 11, 2026.

Champions: The SML has had three different champions across its first three seasons:

SV Robinhood (inaugural champion), Inter Moengotapoe, and SV Broki. This is proof of fierce competition among the teams. Tradition versus Modern football systems,

League Quality & Ranking: The SML rose from 17th to 13th place in Caribbean regional league rankings, measured by team performance in international club tournaments like the Caribbean Shield and Caribbean Cup.

Current Standings & Recent Form of the SML Champion and the Semi Champion in the Caribbean competition:

• SV Robinhood was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Caribbean Shield by Mount Pleasant and lost recent matches in the Caribbean Cup.

• SV Broki lost both of their last two games by a 2 - 1 scoreline, though their coach Rodrigues remains optimistic.
  
  
  

Transfer Window SML 2026/2027

InterMoenotapoe (🏆 11 times National Champion 2x Caribbean Club Shield runner-up 🥈Caribbean Cup runner-up). They brought in five Nigerian players to bolster their squad and a Nigerian coach. Crazy right! The only Nigerian player we had was Ademola Kuti at Transvaal.

Other clubs like Transvaal, Leo Victor , InterWanica, and SV Voorwaarts have not logged major player transfers yet. Not even SV Robinhood (They did had scouting days for U18 and U20)

SV Flora has no significant recent transfers to report, though they feature former national team player(Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) Rondell Thomas, rumored that he might be seeking a way out of the club.

Now let’s open the big transfer news that got SML already stirring!

• SV Notch made the biggest splash of the transfer market for the 2026–2027 season, acquiring star player Serfinjo Pinas for $20,000 USD alongside a new car. The highest transfer sum paid this window
  Serfinjo Pinas was one of the biggest talent from SV Robinhood, now he will be the main man at SV Notch. I hope to see his fast paced playmaking skills

  

The second highest transfer is another ex- Robinhood U20 youth star with name Darrel Sijpenhof. Mind you, he and Serfinjo Pinas were in the SML Finale against SV Broki and yes it was Darrel who went passed two Broki defenders and slotted one goal that briefly put Robinhood in front in extra time. A real number 9 gem!

SV Notch made a statement that they would be busy on the transfer market. The goal was initially to get 15 new players but they extended to 20!
More big signings from SV Notch:
Former national team player Roscello Vlijter to SV Notch.
Roscello Vlijter is the cousin of Gleofilo Vlijter. Roscello played in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie (the second-highest league in the Netherlands after Eredivisie), playing for Telstar for many years before moving to Cyprus, Israel, and Bulgaria, where he spent a period without a club. He is now returning home to Suriname to play in the Suriname Major League for SV Notch.

Another confirmed former National player is returning to Suriname Major League is Invenzo Comvalius, another speedster in the flanks. Highly skills player, player who put Alphonso Davies on edge!

One more player from Netherlands is King Accasi - I don’t know much about him but he played in amateur league in Holland

Transfers for the Champion

SV Broki’s Additions: SV Broki reportedly signed Brazilian players Warian Santos (known as “Ameixa”) and goalkeeper Felipe Viotti (who played in state championships in Brazil), adding to an already heavy Brazilian contingent that includes Sergio Rodrigues.

Core Analytical Questions:

How much quality will these big transfers bring to the SML and its clubs in upcoming regional tournaments like the Caribbean Shield and Caribbean Cup?

Why have other big clubs not made similar splash signings—is it a matter of financial backing, talent availability, or a structural preference for developing local talent from youth academies (such as the grassroots pipelines built by Transvaal and Robinhood)?

Do these high-profile acquisitions signal a true upward growth trajectory for the quality and competitiveness of the Suriname Major League?

Fawaka means what is equivalent of “How you doing” in Surinamese English based Creole

Language is not the only thing solid based like in the Caribbean in Suriname.

Het groeiende belang van zichtbaarheid van spelers

Voetbal is een ongekend nieuw commercieel tijdperk binnengetreden.

Spelers zijn niet alleen atleten die binnen hun competities concurreren — zij zijn ook deelnemers in een wereldwijde media-omgeving waarin zichtbaarheid kansen beïnvloedt.

Clubs, scouts, sponsors, investeerders en supporters komen spelers steeds vaker via digitale kanalen tegen lang voordat zij hen ooit live zien.

Dit creëert zowel een uitdaging als een kans voor opkomende voetballers uit kleinere markten zoals Suriname en het bredere Caribische gebied, wat niet altijd zo lineair is als in andere regio’s.

De uitdaging is duidelijk: zichtbaarheid kan vaak beperkt worden door een reeks factoren — van geografische barrières en beperkingen in digitale toegang (zoals IP-gebaseerde zichtbaarheidrestricties) tot het gebrek aan gevestigde commerciële en media-infrastructuur op regionaal niveau.

De kans via deze samenwerking is ook duidelijk: het strategisch structureren van de publieke aanwezigheid van een speler vanaf het begin, zodat hij niet alleen wordt erkend voor zijn vermogen op het veld, maar ook professioneel wordt gepositioneerd binnen de moderne voetbaleconomie om te worden gezien als een levensvatbaar commercieel asset voor clubs in competities zoals de MLS en daarbuiten.

MOTEV Designs en de rol van Name, Image & Likeness

MOTEV Designs opereert als een Name, Image & Likeness-bedrijf dat zich richt op Caribisch voetbal en werkt met spelers om professionele digitale identiteiten te ontwikkelen via gestructureerde visuele storytelling en mediapositionering.

In plaats van design te behandelen als een puur esthetische oefening, is het doel om visuele narratieven te creëren die de identiteit, prestaties en het commerciële potentieel van een speler versterken.

Dit werk omvat:

• Matchday-poster graphics

• Spelerfeatures

• Aankondigingsvisuals

• Digitale storytelling-content

• Spelerinterviews

Dit alles draagt bij aan hoe een speler wordt waargenomen binnen het bredere voetbale ecosysteem. Door deze elementen te beheren, stelt MOTEV spelers in staat zich te blijven focussen op wat het belangrijkst is: presteren op het veld.

Visuele storytelling in de praktijk

Een voorbeeld van dit werk komt uit de visuele serie die werd gecreëerd rond Ky-mani Leliendal. Volgens MOTEV-designer Tevin Morris ontstond het project organisch via het netwerk van de speler.

“De designs die ik maakte voor Ky-mani Leliendal/King — werden uitgegeven via zijn broer, Raducio King. Dat was het eerste stuk op mijn Substack sportjournal.”

Van daaruit ontwikkelde het creatieve proces zich tot een serie matchday-posters en spelergerichte visuals.

“Het proces voor deze matchday-posters was eenvoudig. Ik had foto’s gemaakt van
Ky-mani uit de tijd dat hij in voorbereiding in Suriname was, en zijn broer gaf in het begin enkele voorbeelden. Daarna kreeg ik de vrijheid om de stijl te ontwikkelen.”

Het doel was om beelden te creëren die zowel de identiteit van de speler als de visuele cultuur van moderne voetbalmedia weerspiegelden.

“Ik werkte met wat ik weet over het maken van sterke sport matchday-posters en bouwde van daaruit verder.”

Respect voor de bestaande identiteit van een speler

Voor sommige spelers houdt het proces in dat een bestaande visuele identiteit wordt doorontwikkeld in plaats van er een volledig nieuwe te creëren.

Dat was het geval bij Renske Adipi, wiens branding al een herkenbare stijl had.

“Renske Adipi was een nieuwe klant. Hij had al een stijl die al een tijdje was gevestigd.”

In plaats van die stijl te vervangen, richtten de ontwerpen van MOTEV zich op het verfijnen ervan.

“Ik probeer die bestaande stijl te behouden, maar ik geef er mijn eigen draai aan. Ik houd meestal een open mindset, stel een set designregels vast en werk vervolgens binnen dat kader.”

Deze balans tussen continuïteit en creatieve ontwikkeling is een belangrijk onderdeel van het behouden van een herkenbare identiteit van een speler.

Eenvoud en voorkeur van de speler

Voor Jamilhio Rigters verschoof de designfilosofie richting eenvoud.

“Bij Jamilhio Rigters hield ik het design zo eenvoudig mogelijk, maar ik wilde nog steeds de flair behouden die zijn talent weerspiegelt.”

In dit geval weerspiegelde de richting ook de voorkeur van de speler zelf.

“Hij vroeg ook dat het design eenvoudig bleef, dus ik richtte me op schone visuals die nog steeds zijn aanwezigheid vastlegden.”

Deze samenwerkingsgerichte aanpak zorgt ervoor dat het eindresultaat in lijn blijft met het persoonlijke merk van de speler.

Zichtbaarheid uitbreiden in de regio

Het werk van MOTEV is niet alleen beperkt tot Surinaamse spelers.

Het bedrijf heeft ook visuals geproduceerd die internationale spelers belichten die deelnemen aan het Surinaamse voetbaleecosysteem, waaronder Cubaanse spelers die uitkomen in de Suriname Major League.

“Dit was een leuk project. Er spelen momenteel twee bekende Cubaanse spelers in de Suriname Major League.”

De bedoeling achter deze visuals was om de zichtbaarheid buiten de directe competitieomgeving uit te breiden.

“Ik wilde hen zichtbaarheid geven binnen de Surinaamse sportwereld — en hopelijk daarbuiten.”

Waarom dit belangrijk is voor Caribisch voetbal

In zeer competitieve voetbalomgevingen besteden veel spelers enorme inspanning aan training en prestaties.

Toch blijft zichtbaarheid vaak ongelijk verdeeld. Spelers die investeren in hun professionele presentatie en digitale positionering kunnen een cruciaal voordeel krijgen bij het opvallen voor scouts, clubs en commerciële partners.

Tegelijkertijd profiteren clubs van het werken met spelers die duidelijke digitale identiteiten hebben, omdat dit sponsoringsmogelijkheden, fanbetrokkenheid en internationale erkenning versterkt.

Via initiatieven zoals die worden ontwikkeld door MOTEV Designs — en ondersteund door bredere governance- en professionaliseringsgesprekken met Pitchside Sports Consulting — is het doel niet simpelweg om aantrekkelijke visuals te creëren.

Het doel is om bij te dragen aan een sterker professioneel ecosysteem rondom Caribisch voetbal.

Vooruitkijken

Naarmate digitale media de wereldwijde voetbalindustrie blijven vormgeven, zullen Name, Image & Likeness-positionering en gestructureerde storytelling steeds belangrijkere componenten worden van spelerontwikkeling.

Voor Suriname en het Caribisch gebied vertegenwoordigt dit een kans.Niet alleen om talent te ontwikkelen — maar om ervoor te zorgen dat dat talent correct wordt gepositioneerd binnen de moderne voetbaleconomie.

En in veel gevallen begint dat proces met iets eenvoudigs:
“Spelers zichtbaar maken!”

Victoria, schaken is misschien niet de eerste sport waar mensen aan denken in Suriname. Hoe zou jij schaken uitleggen aan iemand die er nog nooit mee in aanraking is gekomen?

Schaken is een denksport. Het bevordert het denkvermogen, helpt je vooruit denken, keuzes maken, concentratievermogen en eventueel te leven met de consequenties. Schaken weerspiegelt eigenlijk het leven. Je kan het kinda zien als een soort strijd tussen twee koninkrijken, waarin iedere speler een koning moet beschermen en tegelijkertijd strategieën bedenkt om te winnen. Aan de ene kant heb je de witte stukken, aan de andere kant de zwarte. Elk stuk heeft zijn eigen manier van bewegen en samenwerking is essentieel, het is dus niet alleen tactiek, maar ook geduld, inzicht en creativiteit.

Wat is jouw leukste of meest bijzondere herinnering aan schaken tot nu toe, iets wat je altijd bijblijft?

Sowieso de schaakolympiades. Ik heb aan 2 mogen meedoen namelijk in India en vorig jaar in Budapest, Hongarije. Schaakolympiade is echt net een soort Olympische Spelen, maar dan voor schaken, met spelers van over de hele wereld. Dit is wel echt een droom van elke schaker hoor.

Wat ik ook leuk vind is , wanneer ik eigenlijk niet achter het bord zit maar m’n leerlingen. Je hebt van die prettige en minder prettige momenten. Zij weten misschien nog niet om te gaan met verlies, maar wanneer er winst is. Is die smile is niet te ontbreken. Het zijn die momenten die me bijblijven en me telkens weer herinneren waarom ik zo van deze sport hou.

Hoe ziet een doorsnee dag eruit voor jou, wanneer je niet aan het schaken bent? Zijn er hobby’s of gewoontes die je helpen om te ontspannen?

Nouja, eigenlijk doe ik toch wel elke dag aan schaken, online of fysiek.

Maar ik zou zeggen sws colleges volgen. Ik studeer Bedrijfskunde aan de Anton de Kom Universiteit. Ik ben in m’n 3e jaar . Ik loop momenteel ook stage bij de Finabank. Daarnaast hou ik ook van vrijwilligerswerk. Ik geef schaaklessen. Hier en daar doe ik ook aan sporten, lopen om the block enz. Ik kijk soms ook series, random flyers maken voor small businesses en de jeugdgroep cause I wanna work on my creativity. I like video making , photography enz

Dingen die me helpen om te ontspannen zijn, om eerlijk te zijn, gewoon worship songs luisteren. En zo verder mijn ding doen, huishoudelijke dingen. Spend time with friends and family.

Kun je ons meenemen naar het moment waarop jij echt besefte dat je meer wilde doen met schaken dan alleen voor plezier? Welke ervaring zette jouw passie om in serieuze ambities?

Nou, ik schaak al sinds m’n 7e jaar. Dus dat is ongeveer 13 jaar. Ik denk het moment dat ik realiseerde dat ik echt verder wilde, was toen ik m’n WCM (Woman Candidate Master) titel behaalde in 2015 en ook toen ik in de top van de dames in Suriname kwam. Eerlijk voor Covid was ik gewoon aan het schaken, vond het zeer leuk en stress-free.

Na Covid veranderde alles. Schaken werd serieuzer, met meer verantwoordelijkheden en verwachtingen. Het voelde alsof er iets extra op onze schouders kwam te liggen, en daardoor werd mijn passie voor schaken echt omgezet in serieuze ambities. Het is niet alleen leuk, het is een uitdaging, een doel en een manier om mezelf right now Suriname verder te brengen.

Hoe heeft jouw familie jou hierin ondersteund? Ik begreep dat jouw zussen ook schaken; speelt dat een grote rol in jouw motivatie en ontwikkeling?

Ja, sowieso, motivatie en ontwikkeling. Ze pushen me altijd om meer eruit te halen. Ja, ik heb 2 zusters die schaken, Catherine en Alexandra. Ik ben jongste en toevallig zijn alle 2 ook in de top van Su hahah. Dus ja, zo push je elkaar ook om beter te doen. Mijn ouders hebben ons ook altijd gemotiveerd, mijn vader is nu de voorzitter van de Surinaamse Schaakbond. Dus zo zie je ook, dat ze wel van dichtbij aanwezig zijn en altijd wel supporten en een impact hebben op m’n schaak carrière.

Schaken is een sport waarin mentale kracht enorm belangrijk is. Hoe werk jij aan je mentale conditie en focus, vooral tijdens de spannendste momenten van een partij?

A good sleep haha, dat is belangrijk. Mentaal en fysiek voorbereiden. Uurtje voor de game, actief zijn. Misschien even voorbereiden op je tegenstander. I like going for a jog around the block om eigenlijk gewoon de conditie op te bouwen. Sws at home workouts enz.

Wat zijn volgens jou de grootste struikelblokken voor vrouwelijke schakers in Suriname, en op welke manier ga jij die uitdagingen te lijf?

Sowieso studie, carrière maken. Ik ken vele die weg zijn gevallen omdat ze naar het buitenland zijn voor studie of gewoon levensomstandigheden. Life gets in the way , naarmate je fulltime werkt hebben ze minder tijd voor schaken. Dat is te begrijpen hoor.

Hoe ik die uitdagingen aan ga....Nou ja, ik probeer sowieso elke dag te schaken. Naast m’n studie en werk. Is kinda ook onmogelijk om niet elke dag te schaken, omdat ik schaaklessen verzorg haha en heb daar ook een verantwoordelijkheid, ik zie mezelf dat wel heel lang doen. Weet niet wanneer ik echt zal stoppen om de kennis te delen haha. Dus voor nu zie ik mezelf sowieso wel nog heel lang schaken , maar who know what the future brings. Maar voor nu ben ik wel gevuld met the adrenaline van schaken en omdat ik ook nog niet full time werk , ben bezig m’n bachelor af te ronden voel ik het misschien niet zo zwaar. Maar ik denk eerlijk wel dat schaken iets is, dat ik voor de rest van m’n leven zal doen.

Speel je soms tegen internationale tegenstanders waar je veel van leert? Kun je een voorbeeld geven van een wedstrijd of moment waarop je een belangrijke les hebt gekregen?

Ja zeker, heel veel. Ik zeg altijd: every game is a lesson learned. Soms gaat het goed, soms minder goed. Ik speel online tegen internationale tegenstanders, wanneer je naar de schaakolympiades gaat of gewoon andere internationale toernooien bouw je eigenlijk ook persoonlijke relaties op met verschillende schakers in de hele wereld. Ik speelde een wedstrijd tijdens de Caricom games. En die dame was kinda statistics bekeken “beter” dan me, maar op het bord was het mijn game. Maar omdat ik met het idee zat van hey, she’s good. Ik heb genoegen genomen met een gelijkspel, terwijl ik achteraf wel realiseerde en had geanalyseerd dat het sowieso mijn game was. Dus je moet jezelf ook nooit onderschatten!

Hoe ervaar je het verschil in trainingsmogelijkheden en ondersteuning tussen Suriname en andere landen? Wat mis je het meest aan infrastructuur hier?

Het verschil in trainingsmogelijkheden en ondersteuning tussen Suriname en andere landen is groot. In Suriname hebben we geen Grandmasters, de hoogste titel die hier voorkomt is een FIDE Master, wat niet te vergelijken is met een Grandmaster. Daardoor zijn de meeste trainingen en begeleiding beperkt, en komt veel schaakontwikkeling neer op zelfstudie.

Gelukkig krijgen we tegenwoordig wel online training van een Grandmaster, geregeld door de Surinaamse Schaakbond. Dat helpt enorm en maakt het mogelijk om verder te groeien. Toch zou het fijn zijn als we in Suriname zelf ook een Grandmaster of een ervaren coach hadden die ons persoonlijk kon begeleiden. Dat zou de infrastructuur en het niveau van Surinaams schaken een enorme boost geven.

Wat betekent het voor jou om Suriname te mogen vertegenwoordigen op internationale schaaktoernooien? Voel je die verantwoordelijkheid ook als een manier om meisjes en vrouwen te inspireren?

JA, ZEKER! Het betekent heel veel voor me. I remember, toen ik jonger was op de lagere school , voelde ik de betekenis van de Surinaamse vlag of het volkslied nog niet zo. Maar toen ik internationale toernooien begon te spelen en mezelf in de krant zag of online, en je hoorde “Suriname” tijdens openings / closingsceremonies. Je bent daar om je land Suriname te vertegenwoordigen. WOWW... kippenvel. It makes you feel good, confident. Je hebt een hele natie die achter je staat en je ondersteunt. It’s your responsibility om je land trots te maken.

Dus ja, ik voel die verantwoordelijkheid zeker om meisjes en vrouwen te inspireren. Ik geef les aan jonge dames en zeg altijd: “Geef niet op, you can do it, laat je niet stoppen door wat anderen zeggen.” “Vecht ervoor, hard work pays off.” Mijn hoop is dat zij op een dag ook de top bereiken, Suriname mogen vertegenwoordigen en hetzelfde gevoel van trots en inspiratie kunnen ervaren.

Je combineert schaken met andere aspecten van je leven, zoals studie en cultuur. Hoe houd je die balans, en helpt het je ook om scherper te blijven aan het bord?

Ik probeer een goede balans te houden door mijn tijd bewust te plannen en schaken te zien als onderdeel van mijn leven, niet als het enige focuspunt. M’n studie (bedrijfskunde) helpt me analytisch en gestructureerd te denken, wat ook achter het schaakbord te zien komt. Daarnaast geven andere aspecten, zoals cultuur, m’n geloof vooral en ontspanning, me mentale rust. Die afwisseling zorgt ervoor dat ik scherper blijft, en dat ik beter kan focussen en met meer overzicht beslissingen neem tijdens een wedstrijd.

Waar zie jij het Surinaamse vrouwenschaak over vijf jaar staan? Wat zou jij zelf willen hebben bijgedragen aan die ontwikkeling?

Over vijf jaar zie ik het Surinaamse vrouwenschaak als een groeiende en sterkere gemeenschap, met meer meisjes en vrouwen die actief deelnemen aan open toernooien (klasse met zowel dames als heren). Ik hoop dat er meer aandacht en ondersteuning komt voor vrouwenschaak, zowel binnen schaakverenigingen als op scholen, zodat talent zich vroeg kan ontwikkelen. Ook zie ik graag dat Surinaamse speelsters vaker deelnemen aan regionale en internationale toernooien en daar competitief kunnen meespelen.

Zelf zou ik graag willen bijdragen door een voorbeeld te zijn voor jonge meisjes die willen beginnen met schaken. Door mijn eigen ontwikkeling serieus te nemen, actief betrokken te blijven bij de schaakwereld en waar mogelijk mijn kennis te delen, hoop ik jonge dames te motiveren om door te zetten. Daarnaast wil ik me inzetten voor het promoten van vrouwenschaak in Suriname, zodat het niet alleen groeit in niveau, maar ook in zichtbaarheid en waardering. Want zoals eerder werd aangegeven schaken is niet het eerste sport waaraan men denkt in Suriname.

Kun je een moment delen waarop je echt trots was op jezelf, ondanks tegenslagen of moeilijke wedstrijden?

HAHAHA, eerlijk: Er zijn momenten geweest waarop wedstrijden niet liepen zoals ik had gehoopt en waarin ik kritisch was op mijn eigen spel. Toch was ik tijdens de Subzone Chess Championships echt trots op mezelf(kinda meh idk). In plaats van op te geven of gefrustreerd te raken, probeerde ik gefocust te blijven, te leren van mijn fouten en het beste uit de situatie te halen.

Tijdens dit toernooi was ik in de running voor een hogere titel en een plek in de top drie. Uiteindelijk eindigde ik net buiten het podium met een gedeelde vierde plaats, wat natuurlijk teleurstellend was. Tegelijkertijd leerde ik daar dat groei niet alleen zit in winnen, maar ook in volhouden, omgaan met druk en blijven presteren onder moeilijke omstandigheden.Wat heel jammer was , want ik zette die druk wel op mezelf heel vaak ook en misschien daarom is het verkeerd afgelopen.

Wat zijn je ambities op lange termijn? Streef je naar internationale titels, en hoe zie je jouw rol in het sportlandschap van Suriname?

Jazeker. Op lange termijn heb ik zeker de ambitie om internationaal door te groeien, ik wil een prijs binnenhalen voor mezelf en Suriname op de Schaakolympiade. De volgende is in sep 2026 en wordt gehouden in Uzbekistan. Sowieso moet ik nog door de kwalificatie, dus dat wordt ook een streven. Verder wil ik m’n internationale master titel behalen.

Binnen het sportlandschap van Suriname zie ik voor mezelf ook een grotere rol. Ik wil niet alleen presteren achter het bord, maar ook bijdragen aan de zichtbaarheid en ontwikkeling van het schaken, met name voor meisjes en vrouwen. Door mijn eigen prestaties, betrokkenheid en het delen van mijn ervaringen hoop ik anderen te inspireren en bij te dragen aan een sterkere schaakcultuur in Suriname.

Tot slot, wat zou je jonge meisjes die willen starten met schaken willen meegeven? Wat is jouw advies om hun eigen pad te vinden, ondanks eventuele onzekerheden of obstakels?

Aan jonge meisjes die willen starten met schaken wil ik meegeven: laat niemand bepalen wat jij wel of niet kan. Vrouwen worden in het schaken nog vaak onderschat, en onderzoek laat zien dat mannen vaker langer volhouden. Maar dat betekent niet dat vrouwen minder talent hebben, soms twijfelen we sneller aan onszelf. En dat patroon mogen we doorbreken!

Wat ik ook altijd tegen mijn studenten zeg: vertrouwen komt niet voor actie, maar door actie. Je moet niet bang zijn om te beginnen of stappen te maken. Je moet durven om te leren, fouten te maken en DAN NOG STERKER terug te komen achter het schaakbord.

Schaken is niet alleen winnen of titels halen; het is groeien, denken, opbouwen en jezelf leren kennen.
Kies je eigen tempo, everyone has their own path. blijf nieuwsgierig en wees vooral niet bang om vragen te stellen. Jouw aanwezigheid aan het bord is al een statement.

Wat ik jonge meisjes wil meegeven: twijfel hoort erbij, maar het hoeft je niet tegen te houden. Ik maak dit ook vaak mee bij m’n studenten die bang zijn om bepaalde wedstrijden te spelen, dan heb je na 5 min kleintjes die huilen. Maar dat hoort allemaal erbij en het maakt je ook sterker!

Victoria, chess may not be the first sport people think of in Suriname. How would you explain chess to someone who has never been exposed to it?

Chess is a mind sport. It improves your thinking skills, helps you plan ahead, make decisions, concentrate, and live with the consequences of your choices. Chess actually reflects life. You can kind of see it as a battle between two kingdoms, where each player must protect their king while creating strategies to win. On one side you have the white pieces, on the other the black. Each piece moves in its own way, and cooperation is essential — so it’s not just tactics, but also patience, insight, and creativity.

What is your favorite or most special memory in chess so far, something that always stays with you?

Definitely the Chess Olympiads. I’ve been able to participate in two — one in India and one last year in Budapest, Hungary. The Chess Olympiad is really like the Olympic Games, but for chess, with players from all over the world. That’s truly a dream for every chess player.

What I also love is when I’m not behind the board myself, but watching my students. There are pleasant and less pleasant moments. They may not yet know how to deal with losing, but when there is a win, that smile is always there. Those are the moments that stay with me and remind me again and again why I love this sport.

What does a typical day look like for you when you’re not playing chess? Are there hobbies or habits that help you relax?

Honestly, I play chess almost every day, online or in person.

But besides that, I attend my classes. I study Business Administration at Anton de Kom University and I’m in my third year. I’m also doing an internship at Finabank. I really like doing volunteer work too — I give chess lessons. I also do some sports here and there, like jogging around the block. Sometimes I watch series, make random flyers for small businesses and youth groups because I want to work on my creativity. I like video making, photography, things like that.

What helps me relax is listening to worship songs, doing household things, and spending time with friends and family.

Can you take us to the moment when you realized you wanted more from chess than just playing for fun?

I’ve been playing chess since I was seven years old, so about thirteen years now. I think the moment I realized I wanted to go further was when I earned my WCM (Woman Candidate Master) title in 2015 and when I reached the top of the women’s rankings in Suriname. Before Covid, chess was just fun and stress-free for me.

After Covid, everything changed. Chess became more serious, with more responsibility and expectations. It felt like something extra was placed on our shoulders, and that’s when my passion turned into real ambition. It’s not just fun anymore — it’s a challenge, a goal, and a way to move myself and Suriname forward.

How has your family supported you? I understand your sisters also play chess.

Yes, definitely — motivation and development. They always push me to get more out of myself. I have two sisters who play chess, Catherine and Alexandra. I’m the youngest, and both of them are also in the top in Suriname, haha. So we push each other to do better. My parents have always motivated us too. My father is now the president of the Surinamese Chess Federation, so they’re very involved and supportive of my chess career.

Chess is a sport where mental strength is very important. How do you work on your mental focus?

Good sleep, haha — very important. Mental and physical preparation. About an hour before a game I try to stay active and maybe prepare for my opponent. I like jogging around the block to build stamina. Home workouts too.

What are the biggest obstacles for female chess players in Suriname, and how do you deal with them?

Studies and building a career. I know many who stopped because they went abroad to study or because of life circumstances. When you work full-time, there’s less time for chess — that’s understandable.

How I deal with it? I try to play every day. Between study and work, it’s almost impossible not to, since I also give chess lessons and feel responsible. I see myself doing this for a long time. I don’t know when I’ll ever stop sharing my knowledge. For now, I feel full of adrenaline for chess. I’m still finishing my bachelor and not working full-time yet, so it doesn’t feel too heavy. But honestly, I think chess is something I’ll do for the rest of my life.

Do you play against international opponents? Any lesson that stayed with you?

Yes, many. I always say: every game is a lesson. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes not. I play online and in international tournaments, and you build relationships with players from all over the world.

At the CARICOM Games, I played against a woman who looked “better” on paper. But on the board, it was my game. Because I thought, “She’s really good,” I accepted a draw. Later I realized I was actually winning. So: never underestimate yourself.

What does it mean to represent Suriname internationally?

It means a lot. When I was younger, the flag and anthem didn’t mean much to me. But when I started playing internationally and heard “Suriname” at ceremonies — wow, goosebumps. You’re there for your country. A whole nation is behind you. It’s your responsibility to make them proud.

I also feel that responsibility to inspire girls and women. I tell my students: “Don’t give up. Don’t let anyone stop you. Fight for it — hard work pays off.”

Where do you see women’s chess in Suriname in five years?

I see a stronger, growing community with more girls playing in open tournaments. I hope there will be more support in schools and clubs so talent develops early. I want to contribute by being a role model and helping promote women’s chess so it grows in both level and visibility.

What are your long-term ambitions?

I want to grow internationally, win a prize for myself and Suriname at the Chess Olympiad, and earn my International Master title. The next Olympiad is in September 2026 in Uzbekistan, and qualifying for that is a big goal.

Finally, what would you tell young girls who want to start playing chess?

Don’t let anyone decide what you can or can’t do. Women are often underestimated in chess. Talent isn’t the problem — doubt is. And we can break that pattern.

Confidence doesn’t come before action — it comes from action. Dare to start. Dare to make mistakes and come back stronger.

Chess isn’t just about winning. It’s about growing, thinking, building, and learning who you are.

Choose your own pace — everyone has their own path. Stay curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Your presence at the board is already a statement.

Hoe voelt het om dit resultaat te behalen en Suriname zo overtuigend als overall champion te zien?

Het voelt gewoon prettig aan, omdat er heel hard wordt gewerkt om schoolsport van de grond te krijgen. Dit soort resultaten geven je echt motivatie, maar inspireren ook de rest. Ook beleidsmakers, om meer middelen beschikbaar te stellen, meer te begrijpen, meer te ondersteunen. Dus vandaar dat wij een bijzonder goed gevoel hierover hebben.

Wat gaf volgens u de doorslag in dit traject?

Als je kijkt wat doorslaggevend was, is het een combinatie van alles: voorbereiden, middelen zoeken, een sterk managementteam. Allemaal mensen uit de sportwereld, niet alleen met een sportachtergrond, maar passie! We hebben het dus in de afgelopen periode samen gedaan, daarnaast is er een mooie sfeer binnen de groep. Kruisbestuiving noem ik dat, we trekken elkaar op, delen kennis en ervaring met elkaar en willen het steeds beter doen. Natuurlijk ook de sportbonden, die een bijzondere bijdrage hebben geleverd.

Wat was achter de schermen het grootste obstakel?

Geld. Altijd geld. De minister en directeur sport stonden gelukkig volledig achter ons, maar de middelen kwamen pas vlak voor vertrek. Zonder geld kun je nog zoveel voorbereiden, maar beginnen kun je niet.

Wat was hét kantelmoment tegen Guyana? Puur talent of tactische voorbereiding?

Talent is de basis, maar de overwinning werd in de voorbereiding gesmeed. Het ging om de perfecte mix: technische training, tactisch inzicht en een onverslaanbare mentaliteit. Op het moment suprême komt alles samen: dan telt de inzet en de wil om die voorbereiding om te zetten in goud.

Waarom is het nu in 2025 wél gelukt?

Het succes komt doordat we schoolsport nu fundamenteel anders benaderen. Vroeger draaide het om deelname; meedoen aan de Inter-Guyana Games of Zuid-Amerikaanse Spelen was genoeg. Nu gaat het om presteren. Vanaf het moment dat ik samen met het managementteam het mandaat op me nam, hebben we gezegd: we pakken het groots aan. We beginnen bij de basis en bouwen een breed programma op: voetbal, volleybal, atletiek, basketbal, en nu ook schaken en 3×3 basketball.

Die groei brengt energie. Het motiveert jonge sporters om via hun school, hun district, hun land te vertegenwoordigen. En dat maakt het verschil. Het gaat niet langer alleen om aanwezig zijn. Het gaat om het neerzetten van een prestatie, van meet af aan. Dat is de verschuiving die ons gebracht heeft waar we nu zijn.

Hoe zorgt de SSFS voor doorstroming van talent naar nationale seniorenselecties?

Dat begint bij een goed kader. We werken samen met sportbonden, zorgen voor doorstroomprogramma’s. Maar het begint bij goede begeleiding op schoolniveau. Daar wordt de basis gelegd.

Welke lessen neemt u mee als blueprint voor de volgende internationale uitdaging?

De les is duidelijk: zonder tijdige middelen kom je nergens. Je kunt je nog zó goed voorbereiden, maar zonder budget kun je niet eens beginnen. Daarom zorgen we dat de begroting op tijd rond is - in nauw overleg met de sportbonden - zodat zij op tijd kunnen starten. We hebben een team dat monitort of trainingen optimaal verlopen en of alles volgens plan verloopt. En we blijven evalueren, continu. Want voor je het weet, draait de volgende uitdaging al: we zijn nu al volop aan het voorbereiden voor IGS 2026.

Welke lessen neem je mee als blueprint voor de volgende internationale uitdaging?

Het begint met middelen op tijd vrijmaken. Zonder tijdig budget kun je niet beginnen, hoe goed je ook voorbereid bent. We zorgen dat de begroting vroeg klaar is, in overleg met de sportbonden, zodat iedereen op tijd kan starten. Daarnaast monitort een team of trainingen optimaal verlopen, en blijven we continu evalueren. We zijn nu bijvoorbeeld al begonnen met de voorbereidingen voor IGS 2026.

Wat betekent dit kampioenschap voor u persoonlijk en voor de Surinaamse sportontwikkeling?

Persoonlijk voelt het als een erkenning van jarenlang werk. De positieve reactie van de president en de minister geeft aan dat we op de juiste weg zijn. Maar kampioen worden is één ding; blijven is een tweede. We moeten doorpakken, vooral op het gebied van sportinfrastructuur. Ik pleit al jaren voor een indoorhal per district, dat opent meteen deuren voor vijf à zes sporttakken. Daarnaast is een sterk behoudsbeleid voor ons sportkader essentieel.

En het organisatorische aspect: IGS 2026 komt eraan. Hoe pakt u dat aan?

We zijn al begonnen met de voorbereiding, maar eerst moet IGS 2025 grondig geëvalueerd worden. Het huidige format, waarbij het gastland alles organiseert, is erg zwaar. We moeten tijdens de review bespreken of we dit model voortzetten of naar een duurzamer systeem toe moeten. Suriname heeft een sterke organisatietraditie, maar we moeten eerlijk zijn over wat haalbaar en toekomstbestendig is.

De volgende uitdaging ligt al klaar: Suriname wordt gastland voor de Inter-Guyana Games 2026.

Het vertrouwen is er. De drive ook. Maar Aniel benadrukt: “We moeten evalueren. Het huidige format, waarbij het gastland alles organiseert, is zwaar. Misschien moet het anders. Maar één ding is zeker: Suriname heeft laten zien dat het kan. Nu is het zaak die lijn door te trekken.”

Conclusie?

We spoke with Aniel Ghisaidoobe, the man behind the Suriname School Sports Federation (SSFS). He shares the story of preparation, teamwork, and a mentality that proved to be golden.

How does it feel to achieve this result and see Suriname so convincingly stand as the overall champion? It just feels good, because a lot of hard work is going into getting school sports off the ground. These kinds of results truly give you motivation, but they also inspire others. Including policymakers, to make more resources available, to understand more, to support more. So that’s why we have a particularly good feeling about this.

What, in your opinion, was the deciding factor in this process? If you look at what was decisive, it’s a combination of everything: preparation, securing resources, a strong management team. All people from the sports world, not just with a sports background, but with passion! So, we did it together in the past period, and furthermore, there is a great atmosphere within the group. I call that cross-pollination; we lift each other up, share knowledge and experience, and constantly strive to do better. Naturally, the sports associations, which made a unique contribution, also played a role.

What was the biggest obstacle behind the scenes? Money. Always money. Fortunately, the Minister and the Director of Sports fully supported us, but the resources only arrived just before departure. Without money, you can prepare all you want, but you can’t start.

What was the tipping point against Guyana? Pure talent or tactical preparation? Talent is the foundation, but the victory was forged in the preparation. It was about the perfect mix: technical training, tactical insight, and an unbeatable mentality. In the supreme moment, everything comes together: that’s when the commitment and the will to convert that preparation into gold count.

Why was it successful now in 2025? The success comes from fundamentally approaching school sports differently now. In the past, it was about participation; taking part in the Inter-Guyana Games or the South American Games was enough. Now, it’s about performance. From the moment I, together with the management team, took on the mandate, we said: we’re going to approach this big. We start at the base and build a broad program: football, volleyball, athletics, basketball, and now also chess and 3x3 basketball.

This growth brings energy. It motivates young athletes to represent their country via their school, their district. And that makes the difference. It’s no longer just about being present. It’s about delivering a performance, right from the start. That is the shift that has brought us to where we are now.

How does the SSFS ensure the flow of talent to national senior selections? That starts with a good framework. We collaborate with sports associations, ensuring progression programs. But it begins with good guidance at the school level. That’s where the foundation is laid.

What lessons are you taking as a blueprint for the next international challenge? The lesson is clear: without timely resources, you get nowhere. You can prepare so well, but without a budget, you can’t even start. That’s why we ensure the budget is finalized on time—in close consultation with the sports associations—so they can start on time. We have a team that monitors whether training sessions are running optimally and if everything is going according to plan. And we continue to evaluate, continuously. Because before you know it, the next challenge is already underway: we are already fully preparing for IGS 2026.

What does this championship mean for you personally and for Surinamese sports development? Personally, it feels like recognition for years of work. We must follow through, especially concerning sports infrastructure. I have been advocating for an indoor hall per district for years; that immediately opens doors for five to six sports. Additionally, a strong retention policy for our sports staff is essential.

And the organizational aspect: IGS 2026 is coming up. How are you tackling that? We have already started the preparation, but first, IGS 2025 must be thoroughly evaluated. The current format, where the host country organizes everything, is very demanding. We need to discuss during the review whether we will continue this model or move towards a more sustainable system. Suriname has a strong organizational tradition, but we must be honest about what is feasible and future-proof.

The next challenge is already set: Suriname will be the host country for the Inter-Guyana Games 2026. The confidence is there. The drive, too. But Aniel emphasizes: “We must evaluate. The current format, where the host country organizes everything, is demanding. Maybe things need to change. But one thing is certain: Suriname has shown that it can be done. But a chance invitation to try out a new sport unlocked a hidden talent and a profound sense of national pride. We sat down with the pioneering athlete to talk about his journey, the sacrifices, his goals, and what it truly means to represent Suriname on a whole new playing field.

Chevon, your story is unique. For our readers, can you paint a picture of that moment rugby entered your life?

It was completely unexpected. My first semester in the U.S., 2024, someone just asked if I wanted to join the university rugby team's practice. Back home in Suriname, rugby isn't mainstream at all. I didn't know the rules! But I’m someone who loves a challenge, and I thought, "This is exactly the kind of new experience I came here for." I said yes, and at that first practice the energy, the strategy and the pure excitement hooked me instantly. It was this powerful mix of individual skill and team strategy that I’d never experienced in other sports.

That's a huge leap into a physical, unfamiliar sport. What was the hardest part of adapting?

Honestly, the mental part came first. In my very first match, I was completely lost. I didn't know where to stand or what to do next! The pace was frantic. But that’s what makes my last match of the season my most memorable. To look back and see the progress not just in my skills, but in my understanding and confidence was incredible. It showed me what I could achieve with dedication. The physical adaptation came through the structure here: we have athletic trainers, recovery protocols, and specific gym sessions to build the strength and endurance needed for a brutal 80-minute game. That support system is something I truly wish was more available for athletes in Suriname.

You mention Suriname often. How does your heritage fuel you on the field?

It’s my main motivation. I quickly realized I might be the first person of Surinamese descent playing rugby at this level. That comes with a responsibility. Every time I put on my kit, I feel I’m representing my country. I’m playing to put Suriname on the map in a sport where it hasn't been before, to show that we have athletes ready to compete in anything. People see rugby as just chaotic and brutal, but it's built on strategy and respect. I want to challenge that misconception and show the intelligent side of the game, which reflects well on where I come from.

Beyond the sport, what has the personal transition and sacrifice been like?

The transition wasn’t easy. Homesickness hits you, especially during holidays or when you’re just craving a good plate of home-cooked food. No matter how good the food is here, it doesn’t compare to Suriname. The biggest sacrifice, though, was academic. I was already a year into my degree at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname. Coming to the U.S. meant starting my undergraduate studies over from the beginning. I lost a year. But I have zero regrets. The experience and opportunities here have been worth it. I enjoyed my time at Adek, and that foundation still holds great value for me.

Do you see yourself as a role model for young Surinamese athletes looking abroad?

I don't actively seek the "role model" title because I believe everyone should be free to forge their own path without pressure. However, I fully understand the position I'm in. So, while I might not call myself that, I approach it with responsibility. I am always willing to guide others and share everything I’ve learned about studying abroad, navigating the system, or playing rugby. If my story can help someone else take their next step, then I’m happy to help. That’s the best way I can approach it.

If you could speak directly to the sports leaders in Suriname, what would you ask for to help grow sports like rugby?

I’d say the single biggest thing would be to bring back structured school competitions for all sports, and that needs cooperation between the Ministry of Education and sports bodies. It gives every student a chance to be active, discover hidden talents, and showcase what they can do. It’s the perfect platform to introduce less common sports in a fun, accessible way. Beyond that, for any sport to grow, especially a physical one like rugby, you need proper infrastructure, trained coaches, and reliable healthcare support. Athletes need to know they are safe to compete. With that foundation, you can then build exposure through events and media coverage to attract interest.

What’s your ultimate dream in this sport?

My immediate dream is to win the National Rugby League with my team within the next two years. We have the drive and the talent to do it. Beyond that, representing Suriname internationally in rugby would be the ultimate achievement. It would mean pioneering a new path for Surinamese athletes and putting our country on the map in a completely new category. That pride is everything to me.

Finally, what’s your message to a young boy or girl in Paramaribo reading your story right now?

My door is always open. If you’re in your last years of high school, dedicated to your grades, and have that fire to compete whether in rugby or any other sport, reach out. I can help guide you. There’s a women’s team here too, so this is for everyone. The biggest support for someone like me would be having more Surinamese students here, creating a community. Don’t be afraid to take that first step and ask. You never know where a single ‘yes’ might lead you.

Maar ik ben iemand die van een uitdaging houdt, en ik dacht: "Dit is precies het soort nieuwe ervaring waarvoor ik hier ben gekomen." Ik zei ja, en tijdens die eerste training was ik meteen verkocht door de energie, de strategie en de pure opwinding. Het was deze krachtige mix van individuele vaardigheden en teamstrategie die ik nog nooit in andere sporten had ervaren.

Dat is een enorme sprong in een fysieke, onbekende sport. Wat was het moeilijkste aan de aanpassing?

Eerlijk gezegd kwam het mentale aspect eerst. In mijn allereerste wedstrijd was ik helemaal de weg kwijt. Ik wist niet waar ik moest staan ​​of wat ik vervolgens moest doen! Het tempo was hectisch. Maar dat maakt mijn laatste wedstrijd van het seizoen juist mijn meest memorabele. Terugkijken en de vooruitgang zien, niet alleen in mijn vaardigheden, maar ook in mijn begrip en zelfvertrouwen, was ongelooflijk. Het liet me zien wat ik met toewijding kon bereiken. De fysieke aanpassing kwam door de structuur hier: we hebben sporttrainers, herstelprotocollen en specifieke sportsessies om de kracht en het uithoudingsvermogen op te bouwen die nodig zijn voor een zware wedstrijd van 80 minuten. Dat ondersteuningssysteem zou ik echt graag meer voor atleten in Suriname willen hebben.

Je noemt Suriname vaak. Hoe inspireert je afkomst je op het veld?

Het is mijn belangrijkste motivatie. Ik realiseerde me al snel dat ik misschien wel de eerste persoon van Surinaamse afkomst zou zijn die rugby op dit niveau speelt. Dat brengt een verantwoordelijkheid met zich mee. Elke keer dat ik mijn tenue aantrek, voel ik dat ik mijn land vertegenwoordig. Ik speel om Suriname op de kaart te zetten in een sport waar dat nog niet eerder is gebeurd, om te laten zien dat we atleten hebben die bereid zijn om overal aan mee te doen. Mensen zien rugby als chaotisch en bruut, maar het is gebouwd op strategie en respect. Ik wil die misvatting uitdagen en de intelligente kant van de sport laten zien, die goed past bij waar ik vandaan kom.

Hoe waren de persoonlijke overgang en opoffering, afgezien van de sport zelf?

De overgang was niet makkelijk. Heimwee slaat toe, vooral tijdens vakanties of wanneer je gewoon zin hebt in een lekker bord home-made food. Hoe goed het eten hier ook is, het is niet te vergelijken met Suriname. De grootste opoffering was echter academisch van aard. Ik was al een jaar bezig met mijn studie aan de Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname. Naar de VS komen betekende dat ik mijn bacheloropleiding helemaal opnieuw moest beginnen. Ik heb een jaar gemist. Maar ik heb er geen spijt van. De ervaring en kansen hier zijn het waard geweest. Ik heb genoten van mijn tijd bij AdeK en die basis is nog steeds van grote waarde voor mij.

Zie je jezelf als een rolmodel voor jonge Surinaamse atleten die naar het buitenland kijken?

Ik ben niet actief op zoek naar de titel 'rolmodel', omdat ik vind dat iedereen vrij moet zijn om zonder druk zijn eigen pad te bewandelen. Ik begrijp echter volledig de positie waarin ik me bevind. Dus hoewel ik mezelf misschien niet zo noem, benader ik het met verantwoordelijkheid. Ik ben altijd bereid om anderen te begeleiden en alles te delen wat ik heb geleerd over studeren in het buitenland, het navigeren door het systeem of rugby. Als mijn verhaal iemand anders kan helpen bij het zetten van de volgende stap, dan help ik graag. Dat is de beste manier waarop ik het kan aanpakken.

Als je rechtstreeks met de sportleiders in Suriname zou kunnen spreken, wat zou je dan vragen om sporten zoals rugby te laten groeien?

Ik denk dat het allerbelangrijkste is om gestructureerde schoolcompetities voor alle sporten terug te brengen, en daarvoor is samenwerking tussen het Ministerie van Onderwijs en sportorganisaties nodig. Het geeft elke leerling de kans om actief te zijn, verborgen talenten te ontdekken en te laten zien wat ze kunnen. Het is het perfecte platform om minder bekende sporten op een leuke, toegankelijke manier te introduceren. Bovendien heb je voor de groei van elke sport, vooral een fysieke sport zoals rugby, een goede infrastructuur, getrainde coaches en betrouwbare gezondheidszorg nodig. Sporters moeten weten dat ze veilig kunnen deelnemen. Met die basis kun je vervolgens exposure opbouwen via evenementen en media-aandacht om interesse te wekken.

Wat is je ultieme droom in deze sport?

Mijn grootste droom is om binnen twee jaar met mijn team de National Rugby League te winnen. We hebben de drive en het talent om dat te doen. Daarnaast zou het de ultieme prestatie zijn om Suriname internationaal te vertegenwoordigen in rugby. Het zou betekenen dat we een nieuw pad voor Surinaamse sporters bewandelen en onze kansen op een betere toekomst benutten.

Hoe voelt het om dit met het U15-team te bereiken?
Zo vanaf Suriname had ik maar één doel: komen en mijn stempel drukken. Dat het is gelukt, geeft een geweldig gevoel.

Op welk moment dacht je: “We kunnen kampioen worden”?
Eerlijk gezegd, na beide ploegen te hebben gezien, wist ik al dat ik ze kon verslaan – zolang de opdrachten werden uitgevoerd.

Hoe zag de voorbereiding eruit – trainingen én mentaal?
De voorbereidingen waren niet volop door de examenperiodes. Aan het eind had ik daardoor minder jongens, maar we hebben het alsnog klaar kunnen spelen. Elke avond hadden we evaluatie, waarbij we de zwakte én sterke punten van de tegenstanders bestudeerden.

Wat waren de belangrijkste speerpunten in jullie spelplan?
Tactisch hebben we vooral gefocust op het dubbelen van de beste spelers van de tegenstander (red. is beste spelers van de tegenstander continu door twee man tegelijk te laten dekken/verdedigen) en hen constant onder druk zetten. Dat is in alle wedstrijden aardig gelukt.

Welke tegenstander in Group C heeft je het meest verrast?
Geen van beiden echt – na analyse wist ik dat we hen konden pakken.

Moest je tijdens het toernooi tactische aanpassingen doen?
Welke waren beslissend? Ja, vooral het op tijd aanpassen en schakelen naar het dubbeldekken van hun sterkste spelers.

Hoe ging je om met blessures, vermoeidheid of andere tegenslagen?
Na elke wedstrijd namen we een ijsbad en kregen de spelers behandeling van onze geweldige fysio. Dat hield iedereen fit.

Welke spelers of momenten sprongen er voor jou uit?
Onze topscorer Amoko met 8 goals, Dyvaro met 4, en onze middenvelders De Mees, Damien, Dimitri en Fabio. In de verdediging zeker Sabajo en Liesdek. Ook onze kleinste man, Vorstwijk, speelde een sterk toernooi.

Hoe belangrijk was de staf naast het veld voor dit succes?
Met deze staf werk ik sinds 2023, toen ik voor het eerst bondscoach werd. We hebben altijd het maximale uit de jongens weten te halen.

Ondanks hun leeftijd is de mindset top. Ze motiveren elkaar en pushen om als team te werken. Ik heb er geen woorden voor.

Ik hoop dat de bond deze jongens bij elkaar houdt. Met wat aanvullingen kunnen we bouwen aan iets moois.

Dit moet andere jeugdspelers motiveren om hun best te blijven doen. Ze zullen gezien worden, en wanneer de oproep komt, laten we het buitenland zien wat er in ons land loopt qua talent.

Welke boodschap heb je voor jonge voetballers die dromen van het
nationale shirt?
Blijf werken, blijf zichtbaar, want je weet nooit wanneer jouw kans komt.

Internationale meetmomenten laat ik aan de bond over – Helaas zijn de financiële middelen hiervoor vaak beperkt.

Wat zou je anders doen in de voorbereiding op een volgend toernooi?
Eerder starten en de ondersteuning krijgen die er gevraagd wordt.

Wat is je grootste leerpunt als coach uit dit traject?

Dat hangt van de bond af. Een deel gaat straks in voorbereiding voor de U17, en bij de U20 hebben ze hun eigen staf.

Hoe het allemaal begon...

Hoe lang ben je al bezig met kitesurfen?
In oktober 2022 begon ik als student bij de Kids Kite Foundation op Aruba, onder begeleiding van Roberto en Noortje – de oprichters. Wat begon uit pure nieuwsgierigheid, groeide razendsnel uit tot een ware passie. Zij zagen iets in mij en gaven me de kans om mezelf te ontwikkelen. Sindsdien ben ik niet meer gestopt.

Hoe ben je in aanraking gekomen met de sport?
Toen we in 2022 naar Aruba verhuisden, voelde het alsof we helemaal opnieuw moesten beginnen. Suriname bood op dat moment weinig perspectief als je keek naar de toekomst van jongeren. We kenden niets van kitesurfen – tot ik er via het werk van mijn moeder mee in aanraking kwam. Zij werkt op een van de bekendste kitescholen op het eiland, en haar enthousiasme werkte aanstekelijk. Ze noemt zichzelf mijn grootste cheerleader. 🤪

Hoe ben je bij dit evenement terechtgekomen?
Ik begon als leerling, maar geef inmiddels ook parttime les als instructeur op dezelfde kiteschool. Die school is sponsor én medeorganisator van Aruba Hi-Winds, en zo rolde ik vanzelf het toernooi in. Dit jaar deed ik voor de tweede keer mee.

De ervaring op Aruba Hi-Winds

Wat heeft het Aruba Hi-Winds evenement betekent voor jou?
Het Aruba Hi-Winds event heeft enorm veel voor me betekend. Het gaf me motivatie en vertrouwen om door te gaan en mezelf te blijven ontwikkelen in deze sport.

Heb je iets bijzonders meegemaakt tijdens het evenement?
Eenheid op het water & trots voor Suriname. Wat me het meest raakte? De verbondenheid tussen de deelnemers. De kitewereld is klein, maar hecht – iedereen gunt elkaar het beste en haalt het maximale uit zichzelf en elkaar.

Ik ben tot nu toe de enige deelnemer met Surinaamse roots, en uit liefde voor mijn land draag ik die achtergrond met trots uit.. Mijn droom is om deze sport ook in Suriname bekender te maken. Ik wil jongeren inspireren en laten zien dat ook wij op internationaal niveau kunnen meedoen.

In welke discipline/categorie heb je meegedaan?
Ik deed mee in drie categorieën:

• Long Distance Youth – waar ik de 3e plek behaalde

• Big Air

• Kitekross

Ik had me meer gefocust op Big Air, maar God had andere plannen 🙏❤️ Toen ik merkte dat ik kans maakte op een podiumplek bij Long Distance, heb ik daar alles op ingezet – en de rest is geschiedenis. 🙌

Wat was je beste moment tijdens de Hi-Winds?
Zonder twijfel: het moment dat ik doorhad dat ik als derde over de finish ging! Dat gevoel, midden op het water, was onbeschrijfelijk. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

💨 De uitdagingen van de sport

Wat vond je het meest uitdagend aan de competitie?
Kitesurfen is fysiek én mentaal uitdagend. Vooral Long Distance was zwaar: vier dagen racen op kracht, techniek en uithoudingsvermogen – het is alsof je Formule 1 doet, maar dan met een kite.

Wat zijn de grootste uitdagingen die je ervaart als kitesurfer?
Nieuwe trucs leren, hoog springen, de wind lezen – alles draait om balans en timing. En goede condities zijn essentieel.

Is er mogelijk te trainen in Suriname?
Helaas niet echt. De wind en faciliteiten zijn er (nog) niet zoals op Aruba. Daarom is het ook zo belangrijk dat de sport meer onder de aandacht komt.

Heb je sponsors of hulp gehad bij je voorbereiding?
Alles uit eigen kracht. Ik word niet gesponsord. Alles komt uit eigen middelen: de steun van mijn moeder en het geld dat ik zelf verdien met lesgeven. Daardoor voelt elk succes extra bijzonder. Mijn moeder is mijn grootste fan en motivatie! Ze noemt zichzelf mijn grootste cheerleader. 🤪

Hoe zie jij de toekomst van kitesurfen voor jezelf én in Suriname, en op welke manier hoop je jongeren te inspireren, de sport lokaal te promoten en misschien zelfs ooit Suriname op internationaal (of Olympisch) niveau te vertegenwoordigen?
Kitesurfen is in Suriname nog vrijwel onbekend. Of jongeren er interesse in hebben? Dat weten we eigenlijk niet, simpelweg omdat het (nog) niet zichtbaar is. Daarom deel ik mijn verhaal. Via social media laat ik zien hoe ik train, meedoen aan wedstrijden en groei. Want: wat je niet ziet, weet je ook niet dat het mogelijk is.
Mijn grote droom is om professioneel kitesurfer te worden. Niet alleen voor mezelf, maar ook om meer mensen te inspireren om te beginnen met kiten. Hoe meer mensen in beweging komen, hoe groter de kans dat de sport ook in Suriname voet aan de grond krijgt.

Internationale wedstrijden? Zeker! Daar wil ik dolgraag aan blijven meedoen. Maar eerlijk is eerlijk: dat kost geld. Tot nu toe doen mijn moeder en ik alles zelf — van trainingen tot tickets — dus we plannen elke stap zorgvuldig.

Ondertussen blijf ik m’n best doen om kitesurfen ook in Suriname te promoten. Elk interview, elk filmpje, elke post helpt om de sport bekender te maken. En als ik één moment mag kiezen dat ik graag in de spotlight wil zetten? Dan is dat het moment dat ik Suriname — én mezelf — op de wereldkaart zet.
En mocht het Surinaams Olympisch Comité ooit bij me aankloppen... dan weet ik het wel. “Very excited” is zacht uitgedrukt.

How It All Started

How long have you been kitesurfing?

I started in October 2022 as a student at the Kids Kite Foundation in Aruba, under the guidance of Roberto and Noortje—the founders. What began as pure curiosity quickly turned into a true passion. They saw potential in me and gave me the opportunity to grow. Since then, I haven’t looked back.

How did you get introduced to the sport?

When we moved to Aruba in 2022, it felt like starting over completely. At that time, Suriname didn’t offer many future opportunities for youth. We knew nothing about kitesurfing—until I came across it through my mother’s job. She works at one of the island’s top kitesurfing schools, and her excitement rubbed off on me. She calls herself my biggest cheerleader. 🤪

How did you end up participating in this event?

I started as a student but now also teach part-time as an instructor at the same kiteschool. That school happens to be a sponsor and co-organizer of Aruba Hi-Winds, so naturally I became involved in the tournament. This year was my second time competing.

It meant a lot. It gave me the motivation and self-confidence to keep going and keep growing in this sport.

Unity on the water & pride for Suriname.

What moved me most? The strong sense of connection between all participants. The kite scene is small but close-knit—everyone lifts each other up and brings out the best in one another.

So far, I’ve been the only competitor with Surinamese roots, and out of love for my country, I wear that identity with pride.

My dream is to make this sport more visible in Suriname. I want to inspire young people and show them that we, too, can compete at the international level.

Which categories did you compete in?

I competed in three categories:
Long Distance Youth – where I placed 3rd
Big Air
Kitekross

I had mainly focused on Big Air, but God had other plans 🙏❤️
When I realized I had a real shot at a podium finish in Long Distance, I gave it everything I had—and the rest is history. 🙌

What was your best moment at Hi-Winds?

Without a doubt: the moment I realized I was crossing the finish line in third place! That feeling—right there on the water—was indescribable. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

💨 The Challenges of the Sport

What was the most challenging part of the competition?

Kitesurfing is both physically and mentally demanding. Long Distance was especially tough: four days of racing based on strength, technique, and stamina—it’s like Formula 1, but with a kite.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a kitesurfer?

Learning new tricks, jumping higher, reading the wind—everything comes down to balance and timing. And of course, good conditions are crucial.

Is there any possibility to train in Suriname?

Unfortunately, not really. The wind and facilities just aren’t there (yet) like they are in Aruba. That’s why it’s so important to raise awareness for the sport back home.

Have you had any sponsors or support during your preparation?

Everything has come from our own efforts. I don’t have any sponsors. Everything is self-funded: my mother’s support and the money I earn from giving lessons. That’s why every success means even more to me.

My mom is my biggest fan and my biggest motivation! She proudly calls herself my top cheerleader. 🤪

The Future of Kitesurfing—For Me and For Suriname

How do you see the future of kitesurfing for yourself and in Suriname?

How do you hope to inspire other youth, promote the sport locally, and perhaps even represent Suriname internationally or at the Olympic Games?

Kitesurfing is still almost completely unknown in Suriname. Are young people interested? We honestly don’t know—because it’s just not visible yet. That’s why I share my journey. Through social media, I show how I train, compete, and grow. Because: if you don’t see it, you don’t know it’s possible.

My dream is to become a professional kitesurfer. Not just for myself, but to inspire others to take up the sport. The more people get involved, the greater the chance that kitesurfing will gain a real presence in Suriname.

International competitions? Definitely—I want to keep competing.

But to be real: it’s expensive. So far, my mom and I have done everything ourselves—from training to travel—so we plan every step carefully.
Meanwhile, I keep doing my best to promote kitesurfing in Suriname. Every interview, every video, every post helps raise awareness.

And if I could highlight one dream moment? It would be the day I proudly put both Suriname—and myself—on the world map.

And if the Suriname Olympic Committee ever comes knocking… well, let’s just say: “Very excited” would be putting it mildly.

You grew up playing on concrete playgrounds in Amsterdam and now coach in Manchester. What does that journey mean to you — and what would you say to young players starting in similar environments?

That journey has shaped who I am — not just as a coach, but as a person. Growing up on concrete playgrounds taught me adaptability, resilience, and life skills and football skills that go far beyond the game. In a time when outdoor play is becoming rare, I always encourage young players to spend time outside, connect with friends, and embrace the raw, unfiltered lessons that the streets offer. Those early days laid the foundation for everything I do now.

What role has futsal played in opening doors for you — not just as an athlete, but as a person?

Futsal has been a gateway to so much more than just sport. It’s enabled me to experience new cultures, visit countries I never imagined, and connect with incredible people from all over the world. It’s helped me grow as a player — but more importantly, as a person — teaching me humility, adaptability, and the power of community. That journey continues every day.

How have your Surinamese and Dutch backgrounds shaped your identity, both on and off the pitch?

My identity is deeply rooted in both cultures. On the pitch, I carry the creativity and flair of Caribbean football — full of rhythm, color, and freedom. From my Dutch side, I draw the tactical understanding and the street-smart edge of Amsterdam’s football scene. Off the pitch, it’s about pride, culture, and the belief that diversity is a strength. I’m grateful to be shaped by both worlds.

What made you decide to become a coach — and what do you enjoy most about working with young players?

After signing professionally with Lynx FC in Gibraltar, I found myself at a crossroads while searching for the next opportunity. In that space, I realized how much I wanted to pass on the knowledge I’d gained. Coaching became a natural transition. What I enjoy most is watching growth — not just technical or tactical, but personal. Helping young players discover who they are and what they’re capable of is incredibly rewarding.

Reflecting on your past, you spent nearly a decade coaching at one of the most famous clubs in the world. What did you learn from that experience, and how do you bring that knowledge to your current role?

Spending nearly a decade at Manchester United was truly transformative. I grew not only as a coach but as a person. It taught me structure, professionalism, and the importance of aligning your values with your purpose. I met some incredible mentors and colleagues along the way. Everything I experienced there, I now pour into my work at Manchester Futsal Club — always striving to elevate those around me.

You’ve played in different countries and cultures. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced, and how did you stay focused on your goals?

The biggest challenge was learning to adapt — quickly. Every country has its own footballing culture, and understanding that takes time and humility. I had to learn through experience. That challenge eventually became a gift. It sharpened my mindset and gave me the ability to now guide others through similar transitions with empathy and insight.

Was there ever a moment you felt like walking away from football entirely? What pulled you back?

Honestly, walking away from football has never crossed my mind - when you live in a football minded city like I do, it’s just not possible. My whole environment revolves around the game—my siblings, my close friends, even the players I coach at Manchester Futsal. Many of them are signed with top clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool. I’m constantly surrounded by the sport, and more importantly, I truly love it. Football isn’t just something I do—it’s who I am.

Do you see yourself more as a coach or a role model? How do you use your own story to inspire your players?

I see myself as both — someone who is passionate about coaching and always open to learning. I lead by example and try to reflect qualities I hope my players develop: discipline, self-belief, and resilience. My journey isn’t perfect, but it’s real — and I use that honesty to inspire others to embrace their path with confidence and purpose.

What kind of player — and person — do you hope to develop through your work at Manchester Futsal Club?

More than just skilled players, I want to help develop confident individuals who understand themselves, believe in their potential, and uplift others. Character, leadership, and emotional intelligence are just as important as talent. I want every player I work with to walk away believing they can make an impact — on and off the pitch.

Can you tell us about the projects you’re involved in back home in Suriname? What motivates you to give back?

I recently held a give-back session in Suriname. It was a powerful day filled with joy, unity, and giving back to our people. I truly believe change begins in your own neighborhood, and this event was proof of that — people came together from all over. My goal was to inspire, to give back even a little of what I’ve been given, and to create a space where hope felt real. Belief is powerful. And when people feel seen and supported, anything becomes possible. I’m also incredibly grateful for my support network in England, which gives me the strength to do this work.

If a young boy or girl from Suriname, Amsterdam, or Manchester is watching this — what’s the one message you want to leave them with?

Bribi na krakti — belief is strength. Be bold in chasing your dreams, even if the path is unclear. Connect with people, learn from your environment, and trust your journey. You don’t have to be perfect — just consistent, curious, and confident. Whatever your dream looks like — it’s valid, and it’s possible.

Have you ever considered helping to build or support a player pool for Suriname’s national futsal team — using your network and experience to connect talent from the diaspora with opportunities back home?

That’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about. There’s so much untapped talent in the diaspora and so much passion in Suriname. With the right infrastructure and support on the ground, I truly believe we can build something meaningful — not just for the game, but for the identity of the country. It’s a dream I hope to turn into reality, one step at a time.
