01 · Student: the line

The line stretched farther than Mara could see. Somewhere at the front, another book was being handed out. She shifted the stack in her arms and tried to pull her left boot free. The mud made a noise that attracted more attention than she wanted.

Eli stood behind her. Jun stood behind him. All three had left school years ago. They still knew how to wait for instructions.

In the panels: Mara: “What’s the assignment?” Narration: “More knowledge.” Eli: “When do we get the grade?”

The books had weight. Each explanation pressed against the knowledge already in their arms, and the ground gave a little more. They could recite things about the world beyond the field. Starting toward it required a decision nobody had assigned them.

A person can leave an institution and remain a student for the rest of their life: waiting for the instructions, the book, the quiz, and the grade. Someone else chooses the question and decides what counts as success. Eventually, even a private ambition can feel incomplete until somebody agrees to mark it.

02 · More people. More tools. More mud.

The tools arrived. Eli liked the weight of the hammer. It felt useful in a different way from the books. Jun found a shovel, and Mara put a timber across her shoulder. They loaded the wheelbarrow and agreed to work as a team.

They had barely moved when its wheel disappeared into the mud.

In the panels: Eli: “Now we have tools.” Jun: “Lift together!” Mara: “We’re sinking together.”

They tried harder. Three people heaved at the same beam, transferring its weight through six feet that had nowhere firm to stand. The effort drove them deeper. They had equipment and people willing to help, but no shared understanding of what they were doing or how to support the work.

Calling themselves a team had given them another instruction to follow. They still had to learn how to become capable together.

03 · They thought it was solid

Days passed. The sun browned the field and hardened its surface. They climbed onto the dry crust with considerable relief. Eli tested it with his heel. Mara straightened her back. For the first time in a while, they could imagine carrying everything without sinking.

That was when the stranger arrived.

In the panels: Eli: “We’re finally ready.” Mara: “It feels solid.” The stranger: “May I test it?”

He wore a charcoal coat, its hood drawn low enough to hide his face. He had come from outside the line. He had not handed out the books. While the others looked ahead, he looked at the ground beneath them.

Mara tightened her grip. She had spent too long reaching this point to welcome somebody questioning it.

I’m looking right at you. Through the words. Relax, your camera is off. Probably. I have no involvement in that situation.

Come sit with me for a minute. I want to tell you about somebody building a boat.

The entire universe has a suggestion

This person has decided to build a boat out of old kitchen cabinet doors. He has a screwdriver, a bucket of glue, and a level of confidence that should require a license. A neighbor walks over, watches him for a while, and says, “Hey, those doors aren’t going to hold together in the water. You need a different design.”

“Well, that’s your opinion.”

Fair enough. Maybe the neighbor is annoying. Maybe this is the same neighbor who reports everybody’s trash cans. We’ll give our boat builder a little room. He goes to the hardware store for more glue. The shopkeeper asks what he’s making, listens to the explanation, and slowly puts the glue back on the shelf. “You’re going to spend a lot of money on something that comes apart. This stuff isn’t made for that.”

“That’s your opinion, too.”

He checks the label. It says the glue is unsuitable for prolonged immersion. He opens a boatbuilding manual. The manual explains why his design will fail. He looks online. Every demonstration he finds of this particular method ends with somebody standing in a lake holding a cabinet handle.

He finds one video titled IT WORKED!!! The boat floats for eleven seconds. The man in the video is celebrating so hard you almost miss the water coming in behind him.

Our guy orders more hinges…

Then the news interrupts regular programming. The president comes on television. “We have received reports about your boat. Please reconsider.” Scientists gather. Nations briefly put aside their differences. An alien spacecraft lands in his backyard, and a creature that has crossed six galaxies steps out, points at the cabinet doors, and says, “We came all this way because we thought perhaps you weren’t receiving the messages.”

“Well,” he says, “that’s your opinion.”

He finishes the boat. It leaks. He patches it. It leaks somewhere else. Occasionally he gets a few good minutes on the water, and those minutes convince him that the next repair will settle everything. Most days, though, he’s exhausted. His money is disappearing. His hands hurt. He cannot understand why this project requires so much suffering.

He is working hard. You have to give him that.

You also have to give him a towel.

You can wear yourself out trying to hold things still

You probably pictured somebody you know. Be nice. They may be reading this and picturing you. I mean, I’ve been so stubborn at times that you’re probably thinking of me. Again, I’m looking right at you. I saw where your mind went. Pick somebody else. Anyway…

Most of us have some version of those cabinet doors. A habit we keep defending after it has stopped helping. A way of working that we expect the world to preserve because we spent years learning it. A belief that every adjustment is a surrender, so we keep repairing the same arrangement and calling the exhaustion commitment.

Imagine walking into an advanced mathematics class and being told to place your calculator in a locked glass box.

The professor turns toward a board covered with matrices, complex numbers, and a graph that looks as if a roller coaster has developed anxiety. Your assignment is to find the eigenvalues of a three-by-three matrix, work through an expression involving Euler’s identity, and explain why

\int_0^\infty e^{-x^2}\,dx=\frac{\sqrt{\pi}}{2}.

Then the professor hands you an abacus.

Not a powerful abacus. Not an abacus with Wi-Fi. A regular wooden abacus that looks ready to help somebody inventory twelve goats.

“You should understand the numbers,” the professor says. “No graphing calculator. No computer. No software. Also, calculate pi from scratch. I will return after lunch.”

The lesson and the prohibition

A math instructor may have a good reason to remove the calculator for one exercise. If students are learning multiplication, the machine can produce the answer before they understand what multiplication does. If they are studying how a derivative works, pressing the derivative button may hide the structure the lesson is trying to reveal.

The restriction has a boundary. Learn this mechanism without the tool. Demonstrate this step yourself. Once you understand what is happening, use the calculator to move faster, test a conjecture, graph twenty variations, or work on a problem large enough to make the pencil request medical leave.

That is instruction.

“Calculators are bad” is something else. It takes a decision about one learning objective and inflates it into a moral judgment about the tool. The same person who bans the calculator across the board will eventually use one to divide the dinner bill, unless they plan to hold the restaurant hostage while everybody calculates tax on an abacus.

Mathematics educators already understand this distinction. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics describes technology as useful when it helps learners deepen understanding, perform computation, test conjectures, and engage in mathematical reasoning. The tool belongs to the design of the lesson. It does not replace the lesson, and the lesson does not require pretending the tool was forged in Mordor.

Welcome to the Republic of Long Division

Now make the classroom into a country.

The Republic of Long Division has decided that mathematics is dangerous. Its leaders have assembled the evidence. Mathematics helped people design artillery. Mathematics helped guide missiles. Nuclear weapons required physics, and physics arrived carrying enough mathematics to frighten every denominator in the room.

Therefore, the Republic announces that math can destroy the world.

Schools remove algebra. Libraries place calculus behind the counter beside the substances that require identification. Children learn that geometry is a gateway discipline. A teenager caught drawing a triangle must explain why it has three suspicious sides.

The government does not stop with advanced mathematics. Calculators encourage dependency. Graphs may lead to trajectories. Spreadsheets are full of formulas, and formulas are how trouble introduces itself before putting on a lab coat. For public safety, everybody receives an abacus and a pamphlet titled Counting Responsibly to Ten.

Language does more than carry a point from my mouth to your ear. It changes what happens next.

Say “sit” to a trained dog and, if the agreement between you is clear, the rear end goes down. Say “sit” to a cat and the cat may begin reviewing your authority to issue commands. Same house. Different operating system.

Animals communicate with calls, scent, posture, movement, touch, and other signals. Humans trying to communicate across that species line learn part of the animal’s system and attach it to part of ours. A word, a hand signal, a tone, a click, a reward. The exact recipe matters. If “come” means come on Monday but means come, unless I am holding groceries, except when Grandma is here, the dog is not badly trained. Management has shipped conflicting documentation.

The signal has to arrive intact enough to produce the intended response.

That is the programming side of language. I do not mean people are laptops with knees. I mean words set expectations, direct attention, trigger memories, define choices, and invite action. Underneath all our poetry, flirting, courtroom speeches, bedtime stories, and arguments at the self-checkout machine, language is doing something.

Then we humans discovered a remarkable way to ruin it. We started serving every word with a buffet of adjacent words nobody ordered.

One word walks in. Twelve words leave wearing its coat.

Take innocent.

If I say, “Jordan is innocent of taking the missing cookie,” I have made a narrow claim. Jordan did not take that cookie. I have not said Jordan is kind, gentle, childlike, honest in all circumstances, or qualified to watch my house for six weeks.

Jordan may be innocent of the cookie and guilty of putting an empty milk carton back in the refrigerator. Jordan may volunteer at an animal shelter and drive like the final boss of a delivery app. Human beings contain range.

Yet many people hear innocent and pull up with a catering truck:

• nice

• harmless

• pure

• childlike

• trustworthy

• has never once used somebody else’s streaming password

None of those came with the sentence. They were standing near the word in our minds, so we invited them inside.

Innocence needs an object. Innocent of what?

A child can be innocent of breaking the lamp and still have smuggled a phone under the blanket after bedtime with the tactical precision of a tiny Navy SEAL. Calling the child innocent in one moment does not canonize the child. It answers one question.

An adult can be innocent of an accusation and still be rude, selfish, ignorant, generous, brilliant, terrible at parallel parking, or some exhausting mixture of all six. The word does not issue a lifetime character certificate with a gold seal and complimentary fruit basket.

Scope keeps language honest. It tells us where a claim applies and where it stops.

The adjective buffet

We do the same thing with negative words.

Someone says, “What you did was stupid.”

The other person hears, “You are stupid. You have always been stupid. Your ancestors were stupid. Your future children will struggle to operate a toaster. Please surrender your library card before leaving.”

The original statement judged an action. The listener converted it into an identity, then expanded that identity into a multigenerational curse.

Sometimes the speaker meant the insult globally. People can be cruel. But often the extra meaning comes from association, insecurity, history, tone, or the five arguments that happened before this one. Those things belong in the conversation, but they do not belong hidden inside a word as though the dictionary secretly added them overnight.

Consider a few more:

Confident arrives with competent standing beside it, although a person can deliver nonsense with magnificent posture.

Quiet gets served with shy, sad, or angry. Sometimes the quiet person is planning lunch.

Successful drags in wise, disciplined, and worth imitating. A person can make ten million dollars selling a product that whistles every time your refrigerator opens. The market has spoken. The market may also need to lie down.

Wrong often arrives carrying dishonest. A person can be sincerely wrong. In fact, sincerity has maintained an impressive working relationship with wrongness throughout history.

Adjacent words are useful. Association gives language texture, lets jokes work, helps metaphors travel, and allows us to understand a sentence without demanding a notarized definition of every noun. The trouble begins when association overrules the claim.

The machine is watching the context, too

Large language models give us a useful mirror because language is their working material. The early popular explanation was that an LLM predicts the next word. More precisely, these systems process tokens, which may be words, pieces of words, or punctuation, and generate a likely next token based on the preceding context. GPT-2 was trained with that basic objective. Transformers use attention to weigh relationships among tokens in context. Current assistants also receive instruction tuning and other training meant to make their behavior more useful than raw text completion.

AI is not the first thing humans have created, used, depended on, and only partially understood. It may simply be the most obvious.

There is a strange moment that happens when you work with artificial intelligence long enough.

You ask it to do something you did not expect it to be particularly good at.

Maybe you give it a messy idea, half a paragraph, an image, several conflicting constraints, and a strange analogy that only makes sense in your head.

Then it does something interesting.

Not perfect.

Not magic.

But interesting enough that you stop for a second.

If you are a programmer, the instinct is especially peculiar.

You want to know:

Where did that come from?

I have worked with software long enough to know what code normally feels like. Someone writes an instruction. Somewhere, a condition gets evaluated. A function receives something. Another function returns something. Even when a program contains millions of lines of code, we are accustomed to thinking that somewhere beneath the complexity there is an explanation.

Someone wrote it.

Someone knows.

Someone can open the right file.

Artificial intelligence complicates that comforting idea.

The people building modern AI systems know an enormous amount about them. They know the architectures. They know the training methods. They know how data is prepared. They know how models are evaluated. They can measure activations, modify weights, change optimization procedures, inspect failures, alter post-training, and design experiments that most users could never perform.

But there is an important difference between knowing how a system was built and knowing everything the resulting system learned to do.

Those are not the same thing.

Most people do not actually plan their lives. They plan their days, their weekends, maybe their vacations, and then every once in a while they get ambitious and make a plan for the year. After that, they mostly hope everything connects somehow.

This is strange when you think about it, because the things we are trying to accomplish are usually much bigger than the containers we put them in.

Someone wants to get healthy, change careers, save enough money to have freedom, move to a new city, build relationships, start a company, raise a family, learn a skill, write a book, go back to school, become good at a sport, or completely reinvent themselves. These are not Tuesday-sized problems. They are not even year-sized problems. And yet people constantly try to force them into a few months, then become discouraged when the results do not arrive on schedule.

That is probably part of the reason so many things feel harder than they really are.

The goal may not be unrealistic. The timeline might be.

We have gotten very good at thinking in short bursts. What do I need to do today? What do I need to get done this week? What are my goals this quarter? Where do I want to be by the end of the year?

There is nothing wrong with those questions. They are useful. The problem is that they are usually asked without a larger structure around them. A person can spend years being extremely productive while still moving in no particular direction. The calendar is full, the phone is buzzing, the email inbox looks like a federal emergency, and somehow nobody has stopped to ask what all of this activity is supposed to build.

I think people need something much closer to a business plan for their lives.

Not a rigid schedule. Not a list of affirmations. Not a vision board with a yacht, a six-pack, and a house in Italy that you printed from Pinterest.

A real plan.

Maybe an even better name for it is a Human Game Development Document.

A document for the game you are building while you are playing it.

That distinction matters because most people confuse having an idea about the future with actually planning for the future.

Someone will say, “I have a four-year plan. I’m going to college.”

But that is not really a four-year plan. That is an idea that takes four years.

There is a difference.

If a company announced, “In four years, we are going to sell candy bars,” nobody would call that a business plan. Investors would probably have a few follow-up questions.

What kind of candy bars? Who is buying them? Where will they be sold? How much will they cost? Who is making them? What will the margins be? Why will someone buy your candy bar instead of the forty-seven other candy bars sitting next to the register? What happens if the supplier disappears? What happens if the first version tastes like drywall covered in caramel?

Those details are the plan.

The sentence “we are going to sell candy bars” is merely the direction.

Yet when it comes to our own lives, we routinely treat the direction as if it were the plan.

“I’m going to school.”

“I’m going to get in shape.”

“I’m going to make more money.”

“I’m going to retire.”

“I’m going to start a business.”

“I’m going to move.”

“I’m going to become a professional athlete.”

“I’m going to start over.”

All of those can be plans. The problem is that they are usually plans built for a very small container. Most of us know how to plan something that takes a few hours, a few days, maybe a few weeks. We decide where we are going, figure out the obvious steps, estimate what it will cost, put a date on it, and start moving. For a short game, that is usually enough. You can hold most of the plan in your head because there simply are not that many moving parts.

There is a book I never published.

Not because it was unfinished. Not because I forgot it. Not because I stopped believing what was in it. I did not publish it because some things are easier to leave buried. Some knowledge does not enter the world clean. It becomes advice, then argument, then product, then imitation. People take a living thing and turn it into a slogan. I have watched them throw away sleep, breath, attention, hunger, silence, and stillness, then wonder why the mirror looks back with a tired face. Not youth as vanity. Not youth as smooth skin. Not youth as pretending time has not touched you. Youth, as I mean it here, is the body’s ability to return. To return from stress.
To return from hunger.

There are ten visions for youth. There are also ten other categories, and each category has its own ten visions. The categories involve body, fuel, mind, and frequency. Together, they describe a human ability that most people only use by accident.
