Avoiding doesn’t serve my well-being or the relationship.

Someone recently told a lunch companion, “We can’t be friends,” and what followed was a spiral of “you didn’t, you didn’t, you didn’t.” I recognized myself in every line — triggered by the blame, the assumptions, the missed signals on both sides. Self-compassion begins with knowing where you end and another person begins.

We’re wired for closeness — it’s in our nature to seek connection in families, friendships, and partnerships. But we’re also wired for autonomy and individuality. When those two forces collide, we can feel smothered one moment and isolated the next. The key isn’t choosing one over the other; it’s learning to dance between them.

Self-compassion means not confusing closeness with sameness, or closeness with intimacy. Your itch belongs to you — and mine belongs to me. When we can hold both connection and spaciousness, we find freedom in our relationships. Nobody I know actually wants to be worked on, and honestly, trying doesn’t feel good to me or to them.

I used a metaphor today that stuck with me. If someone keeps driving into a ditch every time they get in the car, why would I keep getting in the passenger seat? Out of politeness? To spare their feelings? Research shows that about 80% of the population operates from a fixed mindset, but I’ve been a lifelong learner since my earliest memories — and my mother modeled that same spirit right up until her very last days.

Curiosity is our superpower. Instead of needing to be the smartest person in the room, what if we asked, “What can I learn here? What can I learn about myself, about emotional dynamics, about easing my own stress?” That willingness to be informed — by a conversation, a course, even nature — changes everything.

I explore this more in my book, Presence and Potential (available at marthacreek.com). Dr. Martha Creek challenges us to stop resisting what life puts in our path and instead embrace the radical idea that “what’s in the way is the way.” She invites us to move beyond judgment, self-righteousness, and the cycle of reacting to unkindness with more unkindness.

Martha makes a compelling case that emotional regulation isn’t a soft skill — it’s crime prevention, addiction prevention, and suicide prevention. She argues that without doing the inner work of regulating our nervous systems, spiritual intelligence remains out of reach.

This is a call to take spiritual accountability for our own responses, to stop suppressing what we feel, and to practice the simple yet profound art of saying “this too.” One shift in consciousness at a time, we can become the tipping point the world needs.

Watch the entire video here.

Subscribe now

Easy Doesn't

(What are you learning, Martha?)

Martha Creek

I used to pray for things to be easy. Today I’m talking about something we all face but rarely want to sit with: self-compassion. Specifically, accepting that pain, tension, and suffering are simply part of the human experience — they’re included.

From a missed appointment to a beloved pet being euthanized, from families torn apart at the holidays to witnessing a stranger drop her drink in a parking lot while already looking frazzled — suffering is everywhere if we’re paying attention. The question isn’t how to avoid it, but how to keep our hearts open through it.

So I’m asking you: what are you having to watch right now that makes your heart heavy? And how can you be compassionate with yourself as you witness it? I’m cheering for you. 💛

Subscribe now

Born of Eternal Day.

Readings from “The Science of Mind” by Ernest Holmes

Martha Creek

In this short meditation, I explore what happens when love takes the throne of our hearts — fear simply cannot enter. When reason and faith keep company with hope, our thoughts of yesterday and tomorrow dissolve into the fullness of this present moment.

The message is simple yet profound: the perfect here and the complete now hold everything we need. Any weight we carry from the past or anxiety we project onto the future gets swallowed up in the great realization that right now, in this moment, all is well.

This is an invitation to pause, breathe, and rest in the power of now.
