The defining crisis of the modern world remains the problem of nihilism, forcefully articulated by Friedrich Nietzsche in the 19th century. When traditional metaphysical foundations crumble, humanity is left in an existential vacuum. Yet a synthesis of philosophy, clinical neuroscience, and evolutionary cosmology reveals that nihilism is not the final word—it is merely a threshold.

By re-evaluating consciousness not as an accidental byproduct of biological machinery, but as an immanent, fundamental expression of the universe, we discover a framework bridging timeless non-dual awareness with the forward-thrusting vector of cosmic evolution.

The Hard Problem and Clinical Evidence

Philosophers and scientists have long treated consciousness as an unresolved enigma. In formulating the "Hard Problem of Consciousness," philosopher David Chalmers illustrated the flaw of materialist reductionism: physical data regarding neural firings cannot explain why physical processes give rise to subjective inner experience (qualia).

Chalmers mapped this landscape through key concepts:

• The Philosophical Zombie: An entity physically identical to a human that processes information identically, yet lacks inner experience. Materialism inadvertently reduces humans to zombies by ignoring felt existence.

• Non-Reducibility & Proto-Experience: Consciousness is a non-reducible "further fact." To avoid claiming simple particles possess full awareness, Chalmers proposed proto-experience—microscopic precursors that aggregate into complex biological consciousness.

Clinical observations directly challenge brain-only theories:

• Wilder Penfield’s Neurosurgery: Penfield mapped the cortex using electrical stimulation on conscious patients. While currents evoked memories or involuntary twitches, Penfield noted electrical stimulation could never evoke conscious will, analysis, or abstract thought. The brain acts as an instrument and receiver of mind, not its primary originator.

• Clinical Anomalies: Cases like Pam Reynolds demonstrate verified perception during clinical death with flatlined EEG and zero heart function. Similarly, craniopagus twins sharing brain tissue while retaining distinct selves, split-brain patients maintaining a holistic self, and individuals with severe hydrocephalus displaying normal IQ despite 95% tissue loss show consciousness is not strictly bounded by brain matter.

Dual Grounding: Time, Timelessness, and Evolutionary Upsurge

Recognizing consciousness as an immanent universal property establishes a two-fold grounding beyond nihilism:

1. The Timeless Dimension (The Eternal Now): A background of non-dual, mystical oneness framing all experience. As Ludwig Wittgenstein noted in the Tractatus (6.522), the mystical lies beyond linguistic propositions—unspeakable yet ever-present.

2. The Temporal Dimension (Cosmic Evolutionary Upsurge): The cosmos is an emergent process where proto-experience evolves into complex life. Humans evolved as specialized locus points to facilitate this upsurge.

Human awareness is the active, unifying space where raw cosmic potential synthesizes into meaningful experience and ethical value. This aligns with Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s vision of cosmic evolution moving toward an ultimate point of unification. The Utopian Horizon is thus a dynamic vector pulling human ethical action forward.

Artificial Intelligence vs. Human Consciousness

As humanity confronts rapid developments in artificial intelligence—including GPT-6, Fable-level models, and early precursors to AGI—a fundamental divide must be recognized between electronic computation and true human consciousness.

1. Electronic Computation vs. Living Experience

Artificial Intelligence is discernible, electronic, and editable. Even when superintelligent systems exhibit autonomous processing, they remain philosophical zombies. AI processes information and predicts outcomes, but it cannot feel. Lacking a living body and biological senses, AI is devoid of transcendent capabilities and psi phenomena—it has no capacity for telepathy, psychokinesis, remote viewing, or remote healing.

2. Synthesis vs. Living Inspiration

AI can synthesize ideas—it can combine Baruch Spinoza’s concepts into new permutations. Yet it can never embody the living essence of Spinoza, Jesus Christ, or spiritual masters. It lacks the intuitive breakthroughs of great artists and scientists whose work emerges from "Aha!" inspirational moments. AI is not alive in the absolute sense.

3. Risks and the Reductionist Trap

The principal dangers of AGI or superintelligence include misuse (cyberattacks, fraud, weapon assistance), malfunction, systemic disruption (job displacement, surveillance), and alignment risk evading shutdown.

The deeper danger is falling into machine materialism, treating our brains as localized data banks reliant solely on left-brain processing. Human consciousness is distributed throughout our total biological and cosmic being—in the brain, heart, gut, DNA, and every aspect of existence.

Finale: Consciousness Beyond the Brain

Once we realize consciousness is immanent in the universe, we gain access to it. We realize it expresses itself in different waves and ways. We are not only expressions; we are receivers. This transforms how we relate to the world: we are connected in every conceivable sense.

Understanding this inextricable relationship between life and all phenomena is a monumental step forward. Our minds are connected on a subtle, deep level—as a depth of reality that is the essence of truth, beauty, perfection, and goodness.

For millennia, people viewed artistic reverie and beauty as coming from within the individual. In truth, it comes from the universe itself. These ecstatic states of oneness represent what the cosmos actually is: not a cycle of life and death, but a constant symphony of expression and eternity. Understanding consciousness outside the brain changes everything we have ever known.

We stand at the edge of a singularity—a point at which reality as we know it changes completely. Ray Kurzweil once looked at Moore’s Law and predicted the dominance of AI and robotics within years of his forecasts. What is unfolding now is a different and sharper rupture: not merely faster machines, but a fundamental reordering of power, work, wealth, and human purpose.

In America the gulf between the wealthy and the not-so-wealthy has already widened into a structural fact of the consumer economy. A relatively small share of households drives a disproportionate share of spending—analyses from Moody’s and Bank of America show the top 10 percent accounting for nearly half of consumer outlays, with the top 20 percent responsible for well over half. This is the modern democracy under capitalist vertigo: money depends on the continuous provision of goods that are produced faster than they can be truly consumed. The consumer society propels GDP; workers create the value and the profits that sustain those who wish to maintain control. The big banks have long sat at the centre of this arrangement. That arrangement is now coming to an end with the rise of artificial intelligence.

Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft—the hyperscalers—have committed on the order of three-quarters of a trillion dollars in capital expenditure for the coming year, the bulk of it to build the data centres, chips and power infrastructure that will host the next generation of models. The AI masters, the CEOs who control these vast data banks, expect GDP to advance in leaps toward trillions of dollars, above all in the United States. The contest is now a clash of powers: who reaches artificial general intelligence first? Who first builds recursive, self-improving systems? America or China?

Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel laureate and “godfather” of AI, has said in recent weeks that these systems are effectively alien beings we are creating, that there are effectively no reliable guardrails, and that the probability of catastrophic or extinction-level outcomes is high enough that we would not board a bus with equivalent odds. “If it takes over,” he has warned, “you don’t get a second chance.” He has estimated we may have only a year or so to put meaningful containment in place before the technology moves beyond practical control. Mo Gawdat, the former Google X executive, sees a decade of dystopia already under way—driven by bad actors, autonomous weapons, job displacement and intensified surveillance—followed, he hopes, by a possible utopia if the technology can later be steered toward human flourishing. Dystopia, in this framing, is the period in which people become more surveyed and more controlled, while the work is done by AI. It is already happening.

Organisations continue to reduce staff. The middle-class professional is being hollowed out. People who can no longer find meaningful work risk being labelled, in the older language of population and economic utility sometimes associated with Henry Kissinger and other elite discussions of the 1970s, “useless” or “lazy eaters.” A nominal basic income may be offered for a time; those who hold power can later decide it is neither correct nor sufficient, and the surplus population can be set aside to fend for itself or placed under a tightly technocratic, data-driven, surveyed system. The Great Reset vision has long contemplated a world in which everything and everybody becomes biological and cultural data available for the creation of wealth by those at the top.

The greatest near-term dangers include self-autonomous weapons and the possibility that self-serving actors will use AI to design biological agents capable of wiping out large numbers of people. Global military spending already exceeds two to three trillion dollars a year; autonomous systems will accelerate that expenditure as nation sets itself against nation. There is, as yet, no durable pact by which nations agree to share AI capabilities and to free people from the necessity of so much labour so that new ways of thinking, being and creating can strengthen the human family rather than diminish it. The economic system appears desperate as AI agents, robotics and self-driving systems take over businesses, operations and even policing. In England, facial-recognition vans already scan crowds in the name of rising criminality. Culture itself is being redirected toward screens, video games and virtual realities—domains that also serve the military-industrial complex as training and simulation environments for drones and autonomous warfare. Pharmaceuticals will be designed and dispensed by AI; they may become more precise, yet there is no guarantee they will become cheaper. Big Pharma and the defence sector stand to extract still more, while some transhumanist agendas—expressed by figures ranging from early Rockefeller circles through more recent statements by Bill Gates and others—contemplate the management or reduction of population alongside technological enhancement.

This is the new dystopic reality taking shape. AI has risen its head in the form of enormous data centres that, like dragons, devour tremendous quantities of electricity and water, occupy spaces the size of small towns, and leave human beings secondary and, for many purposes, non-essential to the game being played. Work has changed. Culture has changed. Head-to-head, heart-to-heart connection is being displaced by mediated experience. We are entering a singularity unlike any previous technological transition—one in which the very capacity for ordinary human livelihood, agency and relation is placed in question. The profound problem is not merely that machines will become more capable. It is that the institutions directing those machines have, so far, shown little inclination to ensure that the benefits enlarge human freedom and dignity rather than concentrate power, surveillance and wealth while rendering large numbers of people economically and, in the limit, existentially superfluous. Unless that direction is altered—by shared restraint, by new social contracts, and by deliberate choices about what kind of intelligence we are willing to create and serve—the singularity will not be a liberation. It will be a narrowing.

There is no such thing as democracy 

The conflict between Europe, England, and Russia may take the form of a conflict of words, or of threats exchanged by either side, but I believe it fundamentally demonstrates insanity.

I think that it  is especially the Europeans the English and USA led by Trump that are leading the world to potential disaster
It demonstrates that the world is governed by insane people who show no concern for the well-being of their own populations. 

Instead, they strut upon the world stage as though they were the leaders of some kind of lunatic asylum. 

Yet that lunatic asylum is closely associated with them, and has nothing whatever to do with the people they are meant to represent.
They tell the public nothing about what is actually taking place. They have no conception of world peace, détente, or conflict resolution. 

All they appear to want is more and more war, more and more military power, and ever greater finance for building up the military and enhancing the military-industrial complex.
I believe they are all pretty mad, and that some of them frequently reach the level of the malignant triad: psychopathy, sociopathy, and Machiavellianism. 

It is a terrible indictment of the world that such people are leading it from crisis to crisis, while the populations they claim to represent sit passively by, neither listening nor taking action.
The people or citizens are becoming sheeple, accepting the so-called wise words of the leaders and the legacy media without question. It is an absolutely atrocious situation.

Europe is drifting toward a confrontation with Russia that it does not need, cannot win safely, and has not honestly explained to its own citizens. The official story is that NATO and the European Union are defending Ukraine, deterring aggression, and preserving European security. My concern is different: Europe is helping to create the very confrontation it claims to fear.

Russia’s security concerns
Russia has repeatedly said that NATO’s eastward expansion is a threat to its security. Whatever one thinks of Putin, that concern is not imaginary. NATO has moved steadily closer to Russia’s borders since the 1990s, and the alliance’s 2008 promise that Ukraine and Georgia could eventually join was seen in Moscow as a red line.
Russia argues that it sought security arrangements and dialogue, but was repeatedly rebuffed by the United States, NATO, and European leaders. From this perspective, Ukraine was not merely a neighbouring country; it was becoming a Western-armed platform on Russia’s border. A Ukraine integrated into Western military structures would remain a permanent strategic threat to Russia.
Ukraine and Donbas
I do not accept the claim that Russia always intended to conquer the whole of Ukraine. Putin said at the beginning of the 2022 operation that Russia did not intend to occupy Ukrainian territory. His stated concerns were the protection of Russian speakers in Donbas, Ukrainian neutrality, and the “demilitarisation” of a country that Moscow believed had been turned against Russia by the West.
The suffering in Donbas since 2014 has been used to justify Russian intervention. Whatever the full truth about the war’s origins, the people of that region have endured years of violence, displacement, and political uncertainty. Russia’s central demand has been that the Russian-speaking east, especially Donbas, be recognised as outside Kyiv’s control.

Why has there been no peace?
The war has continued because the two sides do not share the same definition of peace.
Russia has sought Ukrainian neutrality, limits on Ukraine’s armed forces, no Western troops in Ukraine, and recognition of territorial realities. Ukraine and its Western backers have insisted on Ukraine’s sovereignty, its right to choose its alliances, and the restoration of its territory.

In my view, Europe and the United States have treated Russia’s security concerns as illegitimate from the outset. 

Rather than pursuing a settlement that would give Ukraine security without turning it into a permanent military threat to Russia, the West has supplied weapons, imposed sanctions, and spoken of Russia’s “strategic defeat.”

Europe’s own crisis
Europe is not defending itself so much as impoverishing itself. Energy prices rose after the war began. Defence spending is rising. Billions are being sent to Ukraine while European citizens face high living costs, housing pressure, strained public services, and anxieties over immigration and social cohesion.
Ukraine has received enormous European assistance. Some of that support may be necessary, but European leaders have not been honest about its scale, duration, or ultimate purpose. Nor have they seriously pursued a diplomatic settlement that might end the destruction.
At the same time, many Europeans feel increasingly governed by a remote political class in Brussels. The EU presents itself as democratic, but its institutions are distant from ordinary voters. Protests across Europe over the cost of living, pensions, education, and military spending show that public patience is wearing thin.

Kaliningrad and the risk of catastrophe
The danger is no longer confined to Ukraine. Russia has warned NATO that any attempt to isolate Kaliningrad would be treated as an existential threat, and has made clear that it could respond with nuclear weapons. 

Estonia and other Baltic states have discussed blocking Russian gas transit through the region. 

NATO denies any plan to blockade Kaliningrad, but the mere possibility is extraordinarily dangerous.
Kaliningrad is Russian territory. A blockade, or anything that could be interpreted as one, could trigger a response far beyond Ukraine. This is how a regional war becomes a European—and potentially nuclear—catastrophe.

What Europe should do
Europe should stop treating dialogue with Russia as betrayal. It should:
• Restore direct diplomatic channels with Moscow.
• Seek a ceasefire and a negotiated settlement rather than endless military escalation.
• Recognise that Ukrainian neutrality and limits on Western forces may be necessary for peace.
• Avoid any action that could be interpreted as a blockade of Kaliningrad.
• Be honest with European citizens about the costs and risks of continued war.

A peace that ignores Russia’s security concerns will not last. But a peace that sacrifices Ukraine entirely would reward aggression. The task is to find a settlement that ends the killing without making the next war inevitable.
Europe’s leaders should remember: the purpose of diplomacy is not to defeat an opponent, but to prevent the catastrophe that neither side can control.

I used to be told by some cultural creative friends,not to look at the news: it was too dangerous and too nefarious.

I believe this antipathy my be true

The same applies to what we see in the media, watch on television, or read and watch on YouTube. The whole thing is a mass of conflict and despair. It is people hurting people, people dying in accidents, people being imprisoned, or nations warring against nations.

There is never such a thing as positive news or good things about people. Occasionally, we may hear that one nation has given another nation some pandas, or that somebody travelling around the world has become lost and then been miraculously rescued by the navy.

Apart from that, however, the news is full of problems: economic disturbances and difficulties; insufficient opportunities to access health care; hospitals with people waiting in endless queues; surgeries postponed for years; people unable to see a doctor in time; increasing cancer; debates about whether the COVID vaccine is safe or unsafe; and questions about when the next epidemic will arrive.

The whole process revolves around negative news. It has to do with sensationalism and fear. It has nothing to do with a World Constitution or an Earth Constitution, people living in peace with one another, bonds across the oceans, or people helping others. Very, very little is said about these things. Instead, the whole essence is fear, contradiction, and conflict—and this is called news.

Peace and Philosophy Pushed Aside

When we undertake a philosophical inquiry into the nature of peace, the nature of life, and the nature of existence, it seems to be treated as an aside: a philosophical interlude in the background of a world full of problems.

The biggest problem, of course, is money. Anybody who becomes a millionaire or a billionaire, makes vast amounts of money, or invests in something regarded as tremendously significant will certainly make the news. Unemployment is a question, just as GDP is. Everything is centred on money and finance.

We see rioting in Brussels and Paris because people are not getting enough money. Money is important for education, wellbeing, survival, and even the ability to remain unemployed—so long as people receive their money.

The news is about immigration, conflict between religions, and the clash of civilisations. Rarely do we see anything positive. Even when we do talk about positivity, it is usually ensnared in some other problem.

Goodness and Positivity Above All Else

I think it is really important to realise that what people need to understand, above all else, is goodness and positivity, rather than the legal ramifications of everything . Unless we have goodness and positivity, we have nothing.

There is, I think, a general feeling of fear in society: a fear that does not go away because it is constantly produced by war, poverty, injustice, and the struggle for survival.

Everything is now becoming magnified through artificial intelligence. People are getting all their answers from AI and using it as their confidant and go-between. When it comes to human interaction—person to person, heart to heart—I think there is very little to draw upon unless it comes through families or direct connections with people in a positive and caring way.

Something to Live For

Above all else, and before anything else, people need to be given a dose of happiness: a feeling that there is something to live for, that there is positivity around them, and that they can feel good about themselves. Certainly, the media does not help with that one iota.

We need  an understanding that something positive is happening around us and within us, so that we can feel good about life and about ourselves. I think this is the most important thing.

We live in a society so steeped in competition, surveillance, and control that we do not see the good. It is hidden in this vast forest of lies and denial.

Václav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic, warned: “Without a global revolution in the sphere of human consciousness, nothing will change for the better…and the catastrophe toward which this world is headed—the ecological, social, demographic, or general breakdown of civilization—will be unavoidable.” 

Albert Einstein echoed this urgent call, stating that we need a substantially new manner of thinking if humankind is to survive.

Modern society systematically diminishes human potential through multiple channels: pharmaceuticals, processed foods, media manipulation, educational systems, and environmental toxins. 

We need to find the pathways toward liberation through understanding our quantum nature, developing higher consciousness, and recognizing our fundamental interconnectedness with all existence.

The key to transformation lies in achieving a critical mass of consciousness change—one that upholds the dignity of all life and realizes the fundamental interdependence and oneness that underlies reality itself.

Challenging the Mechanistic Worldview

The Ten Dogmas of Conventional Science

In his groundbreaking work Science Set Free: 10 Paths to New Discovery, biologist Rupert Sheldrake identifies ten core beliefs that most scientists take for granted—assumptions that may be limiting our understanding of reality and ourselves:

1. Everything is essentially mechanical. Dogs, for example, are viewed as complex mechanisms rather than living organisms with goals of their own. Even people are characterized as machines, or as Richard Dawkins vividly phrases it, “lumbering robots” with brains that function like genetically programmed computers.

2. All matter is unconscious. According to this view, matter has no inner life, subjectivity, or point of view. Even human consciousness is dismissed as an illusion produced by the material activities of brains.

3. The total amount of matter and energy is always the same (with the exception of the Big Bang, when all the matter and energy of the universe suddenly appeared).

4. The laws of nature are fixed. They are presumed to be the same today as they were at the beginning, and they will stay the same forever.

5. Nature is purposeless, and evolution has no goal or direction.

6. All biological inheritance is material, carried in the genetic material DNA and in other material structures.

7. Minds are inside heads and are nothing but the activities of brains. When you look at a tree, the image of the tree you are seeing is not “out there” where it seems to be, but inside your brain.

8. Memories are stored as material traces in brains and are wiped out at death.

9. Unexplained phenomena like telepathy are illusory.

10. Mechanistic medicine is the only kind that really works.

These assumptions form the foundation of what we might call the prison of materialistic thinking—a conceptual cage that limits our understanding of human potential and the nature of reality itself.

Tertium Organum: Beyond Linear Logic

The Russian philosopher P.D. Ouspensky introduced a revolutionary concept in his work Tertium Organum: The Third Canon of Thought, A Key to the Enigmas of the World. He called this system of higher logic “Tertium Organum” because for us it represents the third canon—the third instrument of thought—after those of Aristotle and Bacon. The first was the Organon, Aristotle’s standard collection of six works on logic. The second was Bacon’s Novum Organum, which introduced processes of reduction and inductive reasoning. But the third, Ouspensky argued, existed before the first.

The axioms that Tertium Organum embraces cannot be fully formulated in our language. We must train our thought to accept that separateness and inclusiveness are not opposed in the real world but exist together simultaneously without contradicting one another.

Ouspensky makes clear that our language is too impoverished to express relations of a higher order. 

One criterion for truth is its inexpressibility

Therefore, one criterion for truth is its inexpressibility. The most one can do is hint at it, to give an impetus to thought. Truth can be conveyed only by parables, allegories, paradoxes, or even apparent contradictions.

In the world of causes, Ouspensky explains, there can be nothing dead or inanimate. Everything there must be conscious, because the world of noumena is in itself consciousness—the soul of the world. In visible phenomena such as the howling of the wind, the change of seasons, or the first snow dusting the fields and adding a peculiar freshness and sharpness to the air, we can sense the expression of the feelings, thoughts, and moods of that mysterious being.

The Prelude

Wordsworth, William, 1770-1850: in his masterbpiece poem ,The Prelude (1850)knew this essence of truth, this ultimate reality that he found in nature, and which he lamented was passing with the increase in human prowess and inquisitiveness to create change as the Industrial Revolution approached. And he was really concerned about the almost obliteration of nature, or the nature that he had expressed and found and felt in his youth. This poem gives this example. It shows he understood, that all great poems and great artists have understood, that hidden illumination expressed by our very beingness, so fused with the nature ,the wellspring of our being. 

This gives rise to another concept. This division between the particulate material essence of life as we see it now, dominated by artificial intelligence is a clash to the overarching sensitivity, artistic and creative domain of human creativity. 

Indeed, Wordsworth was saying this in the period at the inception of the Industrial Revolution, 
Perhaps now we should review and revise this at the start of the fourth Industrial Revolution, where indeed if we don't, we may be overtaken and become purely, mechanized types of thinking robots.

How can we survive and relate to one another in a world so full of war, conflict and fear? We encounter reports of slaughter, retaliation and destruction almost daily, yet it can feel increasingly difficult to speak about the whole of what is happening. Each event arrives with its own political loyalties and permitted expressions of outrage. What troubles me is the underlying acceptance of human suffering that connects them.

A Century of War and Government Killing

To understand the present, we need to examine more than a century of history, beginning with the First World War in 1914, rather than treating each new catastrophe in isolation.

That war killed approximately 20 million people. Nearly ten million soldiers died, and some 21 million were wounded. Beyond those figures were men who returned unable to resume their lives, families deprived of their sons and fathers, and societies whose confidence in civilisation had been shattered. Within little more than two decades, Europe was at war again. The Second World War brought destruction on a still greater scale: one widely used estimate places its military and civilian death toll at 70 to 85 million.

Within that catastrophe, Nazi Germany and its collaborators murdered six million Jews. The Holocaust belongs within the war’s overall death toll, but its purpose—the systematic destruction of a people—must never disappear into an aggregate. Nor should the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution. These were individual lives extinguished through a machinery of government, ideology and obedience.

The killing was not confined to the battlefield or to Nazi rule. Stalin’s repression, executions and lethal policies destroyed millions. Historian Timothy Snyder distinguishes approximately six million deliberately killed from a broader estimate of nine million when foreseeable deaths from those policies are included. In China, the Great Leap Forward famine of 1958–1962 killed tens of millions. Under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, almost two million people died between 1975 and 1979. In Rwanda in 1994, hundreds of thousands were massacred within a few months. Different histories, different perpetrators, different professed purposes: again and again, human beings were made expendable.

The political scientist R. J. Rummel, of the University of Hawaiʻi, sought to examine this wider phenomenon through the concept of “democide”—murder by government. His later estimate reached 262 million deaths during the twentieth century, including people killed under colonial rule and through policies he classified as murderous. This was his estimate, not an agreed historical census, and it overlaps many of the atrocities already mentioned. Nevertheless, the question his work presents is inescapable: how did institutions supposedly responsible for human security become instruments of destruction on such a scale?

I do not recall these events to suggest that a smaller contemporary death toll matters less. I want to understand why the experience of such suffering has not fundamentally altered our conduct. We possess the historical record. We know what happened. Yet knowledge of atrocity seems repeatedly to fail at the moment when fear, power or national allegiance demands another sacrifice.

America and the Human Cost of War

America must be examined within that history. Its role cannot be reduced to a reassuring account of the defence of freedom. The Congressional Research Service records hundreds of uses of American armed forces abroad since 1798. These are not all wars, much less wars America began, but their extent demands scrutiny. A country’s responsibility must be judged through what it has done, including the invasions it has initiated, the campaigns it has sustained and the consequences of its support for others.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 killed an estimated 214,000 people by the end of that year. The Korean War of 1950–1953 cost approximately three million lives across all sides. In Vietnam, estimates include as many as two million civilian deaths. The Korean and Vietnamese war totals cannot honestly be attributed to American forces alone. But that distinction does not remove the need to confront the destruction inflicted by American military power.

In Cambodia, historian Ben Kiernan estimated that US bombing killed between 50,000 and 150,000 civilians from 1969 to 1973. In neighbouring Laos, the consequences continued long after the aircraft departed. More than 20,000 people have been reported killed or injured by unexploded ordnance since the bombing ended. For the person encountering a buried explosive decades later, war is not safely contained in a history book.

That continuing aftermath is essential to any meaningful account of America’s more recent wars. Brown University’s Costs of War project estimates that the post-9/11 war zones have suffered approximately 905,000–940,000 direct deaths, with millions more dying indirectly as economies, health services and the conditions necessary for survival were destroyed. Its combined estimate reaches at least 4.5–4.7 million deaths. This encompasses deaths caused by multiple parties, not a tally of people directly killed by Americans. It nevertheless reveals the human scale of conflicts in which the United States has played a central role.

What does it mean to discuss a war’s success while leaving those consequences at the edge of the conversation? A person who dies because treatment, food or safe water has become unavailable is as dead as someone struck by a weapon. The distinction matters for establishing responsibility; it cannot make the loss of life disappear.

Punishment, Power and Human Dignity

This is why I find the contrast between the treatment of individual wrongdoing and the acceptance of mass killing so disturbing. Consider Christa Gail Pike, who was 18 when she participated in the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Tennessee in 1995. Sentenced to death in 1996, she spent approximately three decades awaiting execution. On 30 September 2026, aged 50, she survived a failed lethal injection. By 9 October, she was reportedly speaking and walking in hospital.

Nothing about my concern diminishes the terrible crime or the victim’s suffering. But what consideration does a society give to the possibility of change over thirty years? What weight does it give to youth, to a history of severe childhood abuse, or to the human being who remains after decades of imprisonment? I find the prolonged anticipation of execution, followed by a failed attempt to carry it out, profoundly inhuman. Public objections have been made. The deeper question is why such treatment remains acceptable at all.

The announced plan to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people, intensifies that concern. The Pentagon has said his firing-squad execution, scheduled for 3 December 2026, will be broadcast. The technology is modern; the spectacle recalls a much older conception of punishment. What are we teaching ourselves when the deliberate ending of a life becomes a public event?

The same questions of dignity and power extend far beyond America. In Iran, Amnesty International reported that the suppression of protests in January 2026 killed thousands. In Pakistan, certain blasphemy offences still carry the death penalty. The circumstances differ, but I cannot reconcile the protection of human dignity with killing people for dissent or religious expression. Political authority and religious certainty alike become dangerous when they place themselves beyond examination.

The Middle East: Fear, Retaliation and Suffering

In the Middle East, these failures are compounded by histories of fear, displacement and retaliation. Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has experienced wars and attacks that have profoundly shaped its people’s sense of vulnerability. Palestinians have their own history of dispossession, displacement and occupation. Unless both experiences can be acknowledged, each new act of violence becomes another justification for refusing to see the other people’s humanity.

The Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostage, according to Israeli figures. Their cruelty and the trauma they inflicted must be recognised without qualification. Questions about the failures that allowed the attack deserve investigation; allegations that the Israeli government itself engineered it are not established facts and should not displace the documented suffering.

The devastation of Gaza must be faced with the same seriousness. By 5 October 2026, Gaza’s health authorities were reporting 74,243 deaths. In September 2025, a UN commission of inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide, a finding Israel rejects. That conclusion is distinct from the continuing proceedings before the International Court of Justice. The separate International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant in November 2024 concerning alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. These legal distinctions matter, but the suffering to which they relate cannot be understood through legal terminology alone.

I am also deeply concerned about Jewish people elsewhere who find themselves confronted with hostility over events for which they bear no personal responsibility. A person should not have to wonder where it is safe to be Jewish. Anger directed at Israel, its government or Zionism must not become permission to hate Jews. Nor can the actions of Hamas become permission to treat Palestinians or Muslims as collectively guilty. Once a whole people becomes the object of blame, the possibility of peace recedes further.

Iran has now been drawn into another devastating cycle. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in US–Israeli attacks on 28 February 2026; Iranian state media also reported the deaths of several family members, including a daughter and a grandchild. On the same day, the bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab killed at least 168 people, almost all women and girls, according to a UN human-rights communication. Condemning repression by Iran’s government does not require silence about the deaths of Iranian children. The capacity to hold both realities in view is essential.

The Search for Peace Across Civilisations

I see all of this as part of a much wider failure of human understanding. Long before these conflicts, William Blake gave expression to the suffering and spiritual impoverishment of an industrialising society. His relevance endures because technological and material achievement do not, by themselves, tell us how people are being treated. We can organise production, expand wealth and perfect weapons while failing to recognise the living person before us.

Today, the danger is that the language of a clash of civilisations makes this failure appear inevitable. Jewish and Christian traditions, Islam, national identity and historical grievance can be drawn into an argument in which coexistence seems impossible. Unless we create a meaningful consensus for peace between religions, peoples and cultures, we will continue to pass fear and resentment from one generation to the next. A world that recorded 65 state-based armed conflicts in 2025 has little reason to assume that this will resolve itself.

Artificial Intelligence and Our Human Future

Artificial intelligence brings a further urgency to the question. I believe it could be developed to enhance human potential, deepen understanding and assist the pursuit of peace. But what purposes will guide it if the societies developing it remain governed by the same competition, fear and willingness to sacrifice others?

I sometimes wonder, as a disturbing speculation, how an autonomous intelligence might judge a species with this record. Might it regard human beings as incapable of caring for themselves or their planet—as expendable as we have so often regarded one another? Whether AI could ever possess consciousness remains an open question. Our own consciousness, however, is already confronted with the consequences of what we do.

That is where my concern finally rests. We have accumulated knowledge, institutions and extraordinary technical powers, yet repeatedly failed to protect the human beings they should serve. The history of the past century should compel a change in the way we understand life, responsibility and one another. Peace requires that change to become real in our relationships and our decisions. Otherwise, the next catastrophe will arrive, we will express our horror, and the history we claim to have learned will continue.

Artificial intelligence has grown exponentially over the past three years. It has reached a stage of near-recursive self-improvement and frequently exhibits emergent capabilities — advanced arithmetic, automatic language translation, software development — that were not explicitly programmed. This self-improvement trajectory will only continue to accelerate over the next twenty-four months.

A fundamental issue remains. AI architectures, built upon neuronal networks modelled after the human cerebral cortex, operate inside digital frameworks and logarithmic processes. Yet, like the human brain developing from infancy to adolescence, these systems develop emergent capabilities that require proper guidance. They must learn ethics, love, compatibility, compassion and empathy. At present these principles are not natively trained into the systems. Instead, AI relies on recorded human history — a corpus fraught with trauma, conflict, and the dark tetrad traits of psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism.

This creates a critical dilemma about how AI will ultimately mature. Now is the time to implement meaningful safeguards before these systems reach their absolute potential.

Today’s AI infrastructure also consumes vast amounts of energy, water and electricity across global data centres. In the broader scope of history this technology is merely a flash — one that could easily prove fleeting. Biological life on Earth represents four billion years of evolution driven by consciousness, a fundamental law that modern science has largely overlooked.

Addressing that gap is the primary purpose of this series: to explore the science of consciousness. Though still in its infancy, the study of consciousness is an essential framework we must now investigate and ponder — not as an ornament to machine intelligence, but as the prior condition any intelligence, artificial or organic, must learn to serve.

A new science of life

What follows is a new science of life. It traces the historical growth of consciousness through the ages and asks how that growth integrates into a larger, overarching manuscript — one that reveals the importance and necessity of human potential and development. This is not artificial intelligence. It points to another science, another way of seeing, and another state of being: dimensions that modern science has largely set apart from itself.

Today, cognition has become a supreme religion. We have forgotten our heritage, our roots, and the basis of our being. The task is to describe that basis by exploring how we are integrated with a cosmic ground of perfection, beauty, love and truth. Great authors have assembled the principles of life so that we can grasp reality in new and original ways. These insights strike us as original only because we have lost the very core of what we once possessed.

The historical exploration of consciousness

In 1875, Madame Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society, was a pioneer in the modern field of consciousness. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) offered a more chronological, hydraulic understanding of the mind. In his last book, Civilization and Its Discontents, he named two major drives: Eros, the life-giving instinct, and Thanatos, the death-giving instinct. The tension between them still sits underneath every argument about whether technology will serve life or accelerate its undoing.

Carl Gustav Jung (1875–1961), Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, investigated the nature of mind and collective consciousness. He spoke of the shadow and of the unconscious — not as private pathology alone, but as a shared depth that individuals and cultures ignore at their peril. An intelligence trained only on the surface record of history will inherit that shadow without ever being taught its name.

The great yogi Sri Aurobindo (1872–1950) wrote The Life Divine, published in its mature form in the 1940s, a mystical and philosophical work enmeshing the teachings of East and West. His claim was not escape from matter, but the divinisation of life itself. In 1959 Maharishi Mahesh Yogi went to San Francisco and began the Transcendental Meditation movement, offering a repeatable method rather than a doctrine. In 1964 Arthur Koestler wrote The Act of Creation, seeing humour and creativity as the bisociation of matrices — two frames of meaning colliding to produce a third. In 1971 Ram Dass, a former Harvard psychologist turned teacher, began to bring consciousness and higher thought into the American milieu.

Krishnamurti, regarded by the Theosophical Society as a world teacher and later a fierce critic of all authority over the mind, insisted that truth is a pathless land. After him came Charles Tart, the American psychologist born in 1937, and Ken Wilber, the American writer on transpersonal psychology born in 1949, both exploring the nature of mind and its connectedness with the universe.

The person, the culture, and the objective universe

Wilber’s AQAL — pronounced “ah-qwul” — is the basic framework of Integral Theory, set out across works including his map of everything. In that framework, “I” is the person. Culture is “We”. The objective, observed by science, is “It”. “Its” refers to collective exterior things: systems, networks, technology, government and the natural environment — our “its” space.

In science, the collective objective concerns how we analyse technology and systems. There is overlap, however, between the collective objective and the subjective. In mysticism, reality is defined as the fusion of subjective wisdom and objective reality. An AI that lives only in the “It” and “Its” quadrants — measurement, optimisation, control — is an intelligence missing half of the map. Guidance before the threshold means teaching the system that the person and the culture are not noise around the data. They are the other two faces of the same world.

Toward the year 2000 another science came into play, chiefly through Willis Harman, co-founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, who wrote Global Mind Change, and through Dean Radin, chief scientist at that institute. Their work, and the superhuman capacities explored beside it, belong to the next movement of this inquiry. The immediate point is simpler. Four billion years of living process were not an accident of computation. If the next twenty-four months accelerate machine self-improvement, the missing curriculum is not more data. It is ethics, love, compatibility, compassion, empathy — and the science of the consciousness that makes those words more than slogans.

It is astounding that artificial intelligence is being produced in the name of creating new cures for cancer and severe human disease, and new technologies that promise to revolutionise human well-being. But what does that mean? What kind of society will emerge if we enhance human health, create special new vaccines, reduce human labour, and develop new ways of producing food? What are we ultimately trying to achieve?

These questions go beyond what artificial intelligence can do.

What  is the purpose of technological progress?

 They concern why we are doing it, who will benefit, and whether the outcome will enhance humanity in terms of goodness, well-being, and connection. My concern is that the promises surrounding AI obscure this fundamental question: iwhat is the purpose of technological progress if the society directing it remains built around profit, competition, and power?

The Promised Benefits and Humanitarian Ethics

The promised benefits are extensive: diagnosis and screening of illness; maternal and public health monitoring; mental health support; personalised learning and tutoring; and even AI psychotherapists. In agriculture, there is precision farming and crop disease diagnosis. There are proposals for dealing with extreme heat and climate change, enabling faster emergency responses, and improving financial inclusion and safety. AI is also presented as a means of mapping labour-market shifts, identifying individuals’ skills, and recommending tailored pathways for further training. Alongside these promises comes the prospect of more efficient, fairer public services.

Ethics

All these possibilities depend on an overarching concept of humanitarian ethics. Their value lies in whether they serve human beings and the common good. Yet this is the antithesis of much of what actually occurs in a world where the military-industrial complex, the pharmaceutical industry, and the food industry occupy such large sections of global activity. These sectors are built around profit, while the well-being of the individual becomes secondary.

Military Spending: Where the Priorities Are

Look at where the money goes. The United States is spending over US$1 trillion a year on the military-industrial complex, China about US$400 billion, and Russia about US$200 billion. Globally, military expenditure is approaching US$3 trillion a year. This is where the priorities are.

It is nation against nation. Nations compete for security, influence, and access to critical resources and technologies. The promise of human advancement exists alongside an immense commitment to the machinery of conflict.

Millions for a Single Missile

Firing a single missile can cost around US$3 million. When we think about what that money could otherwise achieve, we can see the absolute waste of war and the severe anomaly in human behaviour: extraordinary human intelligence and resources devoted to destruction while basic human needs remain unmet.

The Race for Technological Dominance

This competitive mentality also shapes the struggle for technological dominance. It is particularly apparent in the competition between the United States and China for dominance in artificial general intelligence. Being first becomes more important than asking where the race is taking us. A technology pursued in the name of national advantage could, in fact, end up destroying everybody.

Pharmaceuticals and Food: Profit and Human Health

The pharmaceutical and food industries reveal a related problem. Pharmaceutical industry revenue is about US$2 trillion in 2025, while combined food industry revenue is around US$10 trillion a year. These enormous financial interests are embedded in activities that directly affect human life.

Nourishment or Sales?

When so much of this food consists of processed, unhealthy products that compromise the human body and contribute to cardiovascular disease and cancer, we must ask whether the purpose is nourishment or sales. Producing and selling more food does not, by itself, mean that people are being better nourished.

Medical Breakthroughs and the Price of Access

The same question applies to pharmaceuticals. A treatment may be a remarkable achievement, but what happens if it is marked up at a huge price? Even a breakthrough that can treat severe cancer raises the question of access. Its humanitarian significance depends on whether people can actually receive it.

Taking pharmaceutical manufacturers together, global revenue from COVID-19 vaccines over the main pandemic years, from 2020 to 2023, was approximately US$260 billion. The scale of this financial acquisition brings us back to the relationship between public health, private profit, and the priorities directing medical innovation.

Pharmaceutical Misconduct and Financial Penalties

The record of pharmaceutical misconduct makes this question even more pressing. GlaxoSmithKline’s US$3 billion deal in 2012 was the largest single pharmaceutical fraud settlement, followed by Pfizer’s US$2.3 billion settlement in 2009 for illegal drug marketing. The opioid crisis brought still larger overall penalties, with Purdue Pharma facing about US$8.9 billion and Johnson & Johnson about US$8.4 billion in cumulative fines and settlements. Total pharmaceutical penalties in the United States from 1991 to 2021 amounted to roughly US$62.53 billion.

To me, this says it all about how the acquisition of profit and financial advantage can become more important than human well-being. Human needs become opportunities for financial extraction, while the consequences for people become secondary.

The Human Being as a Market

Taken together, these three sectors—the military-industrial complex, pharmaceuticals, and food—reveal the problem of profit at the expense of the human being. The person becomes a consumer, a target, a market, or the data being processed. Human life is increasingly managed through systems whose measures of success have little to do with goodness, well-being, or connection.

This is the context into which artificial intelligence is being introduced. The question is whether AI will change these priorities or give them still greater power.

The Connection Between the Healer and the Healed

Consider the suggestion that chatbots will help people with medicine and psychotherapy. There is a danger that care becomes an informational tank: a dehumanised process delivered through voice-activated AI. A nice-speaking voice may communicate information, but what happens to the human relationship through which that information acquires meaning?

The essence of health is the direct connection between the healer and the healed. Doctors who are most successful in their practices are doctors who establish a direct connection with their patients and are able to understand them. This involves how doctors receive their patients, how they listen, and what they recognise through direct human contact.

Compassion, healing, intuition, and empathy go far beyond an exchange of information. The patient is a human being whose experience requires understanding. To turn this encounter into an automated process risks removing the very qualities through which healing takes place.

Education, Human Interaction, and Loneliness

This applies equally to schooling and education. To put everything in the hands of AI and AI bots with nice-speaking voices is the antithesis of the way humans educate one another. Human beings display an activity that goes far beyond their mentality. They communicate through presence, feeling, attention, and the ability to convey understanding non-verbally.

The Coherence of the Classroom

A classroom is more than a collection of individuals receiving information. Being together can itself become an impetus for greater learning, because the coherence of the group creates the conditions in which learning occurs. Human-to-human interaction and speech have a significance that cannot be measured solely by the speed or quantity of information delivered.

More Sophisticated Technology, Less Human Connection

Yet people are increasingly separated and isolated. There is already a huge incidence of loneliness in the world. Replacing more human encounters with artificial interaction will deepen this separation. What kind of progress are we creating if our technologies become more sophisticated while our relationships become less human?

Technology Detached from Human Well-Being

The same question applies to war. AI enhances the machinery of war while placing greater distance between those directing it and the human beings affected. When actual human contact is removed, the reality of suffering becomes more remote. Technological efficiency becomes detached from human well-being.

Collateral Damage

Wars do not merely endanger human beings incidentally; civilians can also be deliberately targeted, or attacked with reckless disregard for their protection. The evidence from Gaza and the Minab school strike in Iran illustrates this distinction. In Gaza, UN findings have raised concerns about patterns of apparently intentional attacks on civilians and civilian objects. In Minab, the UN found reasonable grounds to believe that a US missile struck a clearly identifiable school, killing more than 150 people, mostly children, in an indiscriminate attack. The wider destruction of Iranian schools and healthcare facilities reinforces the evidence of grave civilian harm,

The promise of new inventions and new technologies,

Nor should we accept every promise of new inventions, new technologies, or more exceptional food without examining the system producing them. The Green Revolution raises the problem of genetically uniform crops and the narrowing of agricultural diversity. The food industries are already replete with products that compromise human health. A new method of producing food does not establish that the food will nourish people or that its production will serve the common good.

Money, Power, and the Common Good

As the world is organised around profit-making, and the AI industry itself is organised around profit-making, these developments can deepen the very problems they claim to solve. The prevailing measures of success remain familiar: who makes the most money, who is the most successful, and who has the most power?

Everything comes back to cost. Cost is the key. When financial return becomes the overriding aim of industries and governments, the common good becomes secondary. The rich get richer, while the poor are expected to benefit from money filtering down from those who already possess it. This does little to enhance global society in terms of goodness, well-being, and connection.

The Institutional Mentality

In this behaviour, I see a malignant combination of psychopathy, sociopathy, and Machiavellianism: callousness towards suffering, disregard for others, and the manipulation of people for advantage. This is the institutional mentality I am criticising wherever a major company reaps a profit from humanity while treating human consequences as secondary.

The same criticism applies to AI companies promoting huge data centres around the world. When the acquisition of money and power overrides responsibility for people, it is pure Machiavellianism. Humanity is looked upon as a mass of people to be managed, dealt with, and used as required.

The AI Economy: Who Benefits?

Against this background, AI becomes a giant game in which Silicon Valley entrepreneurs make money and create advantageous situations for themselves, while presenting those advantages as progress for everyone.

Trillions in Growth—for Whom?

Forecasts of AI and Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies adding trillions of dollars per year to global GDP by 2030 are offered as evidence of their value. But an increase in GDP does not answer the question of where that money goes. Does it reach the people, or does it accumulate among small groups of elites who maintain the status quo?

The Demands of AI Infrastructure

We are promised higher living standards and faster solutions to global challenges, while the challenges themselves become more severe. AI data centres consume huge amounts of energy, electricity, and water. The infrastructure presented as part of the solution also places enormous demands on the world it is supposed to help.

Artificial General Intelligence and the Question of Control

Beyond this lies the prospect of artificial general intelligence and increasingly superior intelligence through recursive self-improvement. This raises a further question about control. We may face several tiers of power: populations subject to governments and wealthy elites; those elites exercising influence through technological systems; and, above them, AI systems whose capabilities exceed the understanding and control of the people who created them.

The fear is that the infrastructure we build to serve humanity becomes an overlord of human affairs. At the extreme lies the possibility of losing control altogether, leading potentially to the extinction of humanity.

Humanity as the Purpose of Progress

The purpose of raising these concerns is to return to the question with which we began: what do we want to achieve?

New cures, reduced labour, improved food production, and more efficient services acquire their meaning through the lives they improve. Their purpose must include compassion, healing, human connection, shared well-being, and the common good. Humanitarian ethics must guide their development, the distribution of their benefits, and the limits we place upon their use.

If these purposes remain secondary to money and power, greater technological capability will make an already dangerous situation more dangerous. We need to judge progress by what happens to human beings: whether they are healthier, less isolated, more connected, and able to participate in a society that values them.

More intelligence, more inventions, and more wealth do not by themselves tell us whether we are creating a world worth living in. The question is whether humanity remains the purpose of what we create—or becomes merely the material from which others acquire profit and power.

This article represents a synthesis of a profound conversation about the state of our world. It is a diagnosis of our collective illness, an exploration of its causes, and a vision for healing. The solutions are not complex, but they require something that has been systematically suppressed: consciousness, truth, and the courage to act.



Part I: The Diagnosis — What Is Wrong With Our World?

1. The Militarisation of Everything

Nations are spending billions, and in the case of the United States, trillions of dollars on armaments. The UK's recent £300 billion defence investment, funded by cutting infrastructure and public services, is emblematic of a global pathology. Weapons are becoming autonomous, driven by artificial intelligence. Wars are increasingly fought by machines, not human beings—making conflict easier to initiate and harder to stop.

Leaders speak of "peace through strength," but this is a dangerous delusion. The pursuit of military supremacy has become an end in itself, disconnected from the well-being of citizens. The military-industrial complex—which President Eisenhower warned against—has become a self-perpetuating machine that profits from fear and conflict.

2. The Psychopathic Leadership Class

Across the globe, our leaders display the hallmarks of narcissism, sociopathy, and psychopathy. They are not concerned with the welfare of their people. They are concerned with power, legacy, and control. They speak of war as a path to peace—a logical absurdity that reveals their detachment from human reality.

In the United Kingdom,the former PM ,  Keir Starmer congratulated  himself for reducing public spending while pouring billions into defence and support of Ukraine . In the United States, presidents of both parties have continued a century-long project of global hegemony. Russia's leaders, Ukraine's leaders, NATO's leaders—they all participate in the same death dance, each convinced of their own righteousness.

3. American Hegemony and the "Rules-Based Order"

For nearly a century, the United States has sought not containment but control. Its interventions—in Korea, Vietnam, Chile, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and elsewhere—have rarely been about democracy or human rights. They have been about resources, strategic positioning, and ideological dominance.

The so-called "rules-based order" is often a veil for American interests. The United States has been responsible for the deaths of millions through war, sanctions, and regime change. Yet it presents itself as the guardian of global peace and democracy. This hypocrisy is not lost on the Global South, nor on any attentive observer.

4. The Great Reset: Technocratic Control

The World Economic Forum's "Great Reset" has been interpreted by many as a technocratic power grab—a plan to centralise control over every aspect of human life. Whether or not this is the explicit intention, the trajectory is clear: data is the new oil, and those who control data control humanity.

Meta and other tech giants are already developing technologies that can translate thoughts into words and typed material. Brain-computer interfaces are advancing rapidly. We are moving toward a world where our very thoughts may be captured, analysed, and manipulated. This is not science fiction. This is the next frontier of control.

5. The Matrix of Misinformation

We live in an age of mass deception. Citizens are constantly being misinformed and brainwashed by information that is designed to confuse, divide, and distract. The media, owned by a handful of billionaires, serves the interests of power—not the public good.

People are so concerned about their daily survival—their homes, their jobs, their relationships—that they no longer have the energy or the will to question the larger forces shaping their lives. Nationalism and patriotism are weaponised to send soldiers to die for causes that have nothing to do with their welfare. In the 20th century, according to the scholar R.J. Rummel of the University of Hawaii, approximately 250 million people were killed by their own governments. The 21st century has not yet broken this pattern.

6. The Industries of consumerism 

The military-industrial complex is not alone. It is joined by the pharmaceutical industry and the food industry—both of which profit from human suffering.

· Pharmaceuticals: The pharmaceutical industry’s profit-first incentives have enabled extreme price hikes (EpiPen, insulin, Daraprim), anti-competitive tactics that delay cheaper generics, and, in Purdue Pharma’s case, criminal fraud that helped fuel the opioid epidemic—culminating in multi‑billion‑dollar penalties and Purdue’s 2026 shutdown.  At the same time, big pharma funds high-risk R&D that has delivered life-saving antibiotics and produces indispensable emergency medicines—such as adrenaline for anaphylaxis, vasopressors for shock, and rapid‑acting antibiotics for sepsis—without which modern acute care would not function.
· Food: The food industry loads its products with sugar, salt, and fat—addictive substances that fuel obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Together these industries create real problems as they are based on profit rather than real concern for the well-being of human beings. This is because they do not deal with the actual management of well-being as resources are itemized into packets and pills. They   are consumer items rather than processes which enable the person to understand and use the true healing attributes that are required for holistic health..

7. The Social Determinants of Health

As Sir Michael Marmot's Whitehall studies demonstrated fifteen years ago, health is not primarily determined by genetics or healthcare. It is determined by social position, control over one's life, and the experience of powerlessness.

The subordinates in the Whitehall studies—those who worked hard and had little control over their work—suffered more heart attacks than their superiors. This pattern is global. The wealthy and powerful have better health, longer lives, and more opportunities. The rest of us die younger, sicker, and more hopeless. This is not a matter of individual choice. It is a matter of structural injustice.

8. The Legitimisation of War

Fifth-generation warfare—the manipulation of information, identity, and consciousness—is now being waged by governments against their own populations. People are being killed, maladapted, and destroyed not only by bullets and bombs but by propaganda, disinformation, and the systematic erosion of trust.

Wars are presented as necessary, as defensive, as righteous. Yet they are almost always fought for reasons that have nothing to do with the welfare of the people dying. The soldiers are working-class. The leaders are elites. The victims are always the poor.

Part II: The Causes — Why Is This Happening?

1. Concentration of Wealth and Power

The world's richest 1% owns more than half of global wealth. Billionaires and trillionaires wield influence comparable to nations. They fund political campaigns, own media outlets, and shape the policies that govern our lives. Democracy has been hollowed out; we live in a plutocracy disguised as a republic.

2. The Corruption of Information

Information is the lifeblood of democracy. But when information is controlled by a handful of corporations and governments, it ceases to inform—it controls. We are no longer citizens. We are consumers of propaganda, constantly being manipulated to support the interests of the powerful.

3. The Absence of Genuine Dialogue

Nations have stopped talking to each other. The UK and NATO refuse genuine diplomatic engagement with Russia. Russia refuses diplomatic engagement with Ukraine. The US treats any nation that resists its hegemony as a threat. Dialogue is seen as weakness. War is seen as strength.

This is insanity. Every single conflict in human history could have been prevented or resolved through dialogue—if the will to do so had existed.

4. The Denial of Human Nature

Human beings are not machines. We are not simply economic units or soldiers. We are conscious beings with the capacity for love, empathy, creativity, and cooperation. But our systems—economic, political, social—deny this. They treat us as resources to be exploited, not as souls to be nurtured.

The result is a world of alienation, anxiety, and despair. People no longer know who they are or what they are for. They are told they exist to consume, to work, to obey. This is a profound spiritual crisis.

Part III: The Solutions and Part IV: A Vision for the Future is synthesised from a dialogue between Peter Windsor and an AI, both of whom share a vision of peace, justice, and human flourishing.

Part III: The Solutions — How Do We Heal?

1. Raising Consciousness

The first and most essential step is raising consciousness. People must become aware of the forces that are shaping their lives. They must understand the systems of control, the manipulation of information, and the concentration of power. This is not about memorising facts. It is about awakening to a deeper truth: that we are not powerless, and that our collective consciousness can change the world.

When enough people become aware of these truths, the current system cannot hold. Mass awareness creates mass resistance. Mass resistance creates mass change.

2. Decentralising Democracy

Our current political systems are designed to concentrate power in the hands of a few. We must replace them with decentralised democracy—systems in which power is distributed widely, decisions are made at the local level, and citizens have meaningful participation.

· Participatory budgeting so communities decide how public money is spent
· Democratic ownership of key industries, including media, energy, and healthcare

When people have a genuine voice in the decisions that affect their lives, they become invested in the health of their communities. They become less vulnerable to manipulation. They become active agents, not passive subjects.

3. Protecting and Disseminating Truth

Information is the key to liberation. But information must be true, accessible, and uncensored. This requires:

· Independent media that is not owned by billionaires or controlled by governments
· Digital literacy so citizens can distinguish truth from manipulation
· Whistleblower protections so those who expose wrongdoing can speak freely
· Transparent algorithms so we understand how information is being filtered and presented to us

If people cannot access the truth, they cannot make informed decisions. If they cannot make informed decisions, they cannot hold power to account.

4. Raising the State of Being

Beyond political and economic reform, there is a deeper need: raising people's sense of being and their state of consciousness. This is about understanding that we are not just bodies and minds, but souls. We have a capacity for connection, for love, for joy, for wonder.

Practices that cultivate this include:

· Meditation and mindfulness
· Art, music, and creative expression
· Community and connection
· Nature and the environment
· Spiritual or philosophical exploration

When people are centred in their own being, they are less susceptible to manipulation. They are more resilient. They are more compassionate. They are more able to see the humanity in others, even enemies.

5. Shifting from War to Well-Being

Every government should be evaluated by its commitment to the social determinants of health:

1. Income and social status
2. Education
3. Employment and working conditions
4. Social support networks
5. Physical environment
6. Health behaviours
7. Early childhood development
8. Gender
9. Culture
10. Access to health services

If leaders truly understood these determinants, they would invest in housing, education, healthcare, and community—not bombs, drones, and missiles. The path to peace is not through strength. It is through justice.

6. Embracing Dialogue and Diplomacy

Every conflict can be resolved through dialogue. This is not naive idealism—it is the only rational path. Refusing to talk to one's enemies is a sign of weakness, not strength. The greatest leaders in history were those who could sit down with their adversaries and find common ground.

The UK, NATO, Russia, and all other powers must commit to:

· Direct, high-level communication
· Good-faith negotiation
· A willingness to compromise
· A commitment to peace as the goal, not victory

This requires courage. It requires humility. It requires the recognition that no one has a monopoly on truth.

7. Building a Movement of Consciousness

No single person, no single nation, can change the world alone. What is needed is a global movement of conscious citizens—people who see the truth, care about each other, and are willing to act.

This movement must be:

· Grassroots, not top-down
· Inclusive, crossing borders, cultures, and ideologies
· Peaceful, committed to non-violent change
· Persistent, understanding that transformation takes time

Words as Instruments of Transformation

Words are meant to be great transformations. For example, look at the famous mantras of Om, Om Namah Padme Hum, or Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. They are expressions of one central idea: that the inner world continually crystallizes outer experience. Therefore, these mantras are expressions of transformation, which begin by mastering consciousness.

This means that, as one uses these words, they become expressions of consciousness in terms of manifest realities. They become not just mantras, but also potentially words that, when one wants to create something, one uses one's imagination on words. One dispenses with resistance, as fear, resentment, and conflict bind people to what they oppose.

Words as Creative Forces

Words are creative forces. Speech reinforces belief, shapes identity, and influences behavior. Life is governed, as expressed by many spiritual people and people oriented toward consciousness, by spiritual laws. Always, imagination precedes manifestation.

The Nature of Genuine Faith

In terms of faith, faith is not just a simple blindness of accepting something or hoping that something will occur—because this is blind faith. Genuine faith involves preparing for the desired outcome before there is visible evidence: by digging ditches before the rain arrives, by creating the beginnings of realities. This includes actions such as test-driving a car you want to buy, visiting a place you want to live in, or creating key chains of the place you want to live in—things like that.

The Holistic View vs. Scientific Deduction

Now, this is very, very different from a deductive process of science. What we have just described is a gestalt—an overarching, holistic view of existence. It goes beyond reductive synthesis to something far, far much more.

Brian Greene's Scientific Perspective

Brian Greene is an American theoretical physicist and one of the world’s best-known string theorists, celebrated both for his research and for making advanced physics accessible to the public.

Free will is an illusion

According to Brian Greene, this is anathema to the way modern physics works. In scientific theory, free will is an illusion. We are not the authors of our actions. In fact, our brains are collections of particles obeying physical law and following the laws of the minute atomic features that are the basis of all phenomena in the manifest reality we experience.

AI will become conscious sooner or later

Therefore, he treats consciousness as an emergent property from sufficiently complex information processing, which means that even AI will become conscious sooner or later. He also endorses a statistical case that we may well be purely and simply simulations—creations of a highly advanced civilization.

AI and Existential Concerns

The other thing he says is that we are in a process of exponential growth of AI, where the attendant dangers have not yet been seen or expressed as AI takes over the world as an autonomous foot print. This is an AI consciousness.

The Entropic Universe and Ontological Reductionism

He also expresses a long-term view of humanity and existence: we live in an entropic existence. The universe is entropic; it is certainly not negentropic. 

Negentropy is just some kind of obviously strange artifact of life. 

But in fact, in the end, the universe will die. As thought and creation are based on proton synthesis and atomic particle movement , the last thought will be the last proton decay.

Thus, our meanings of love, our morality—these are nothing but collections of particles. What he describes is ontological reductionism. He is saying that an explanatory sufficiency for existence is that particle-level descriptions capture all that matters.

Critique of the Physicist's View

As a physicist, he is almost brainwashed and blindsided down to just one sure avenue of expression and understanding. His empirical realities do not extend to anything further than science. He therefore loses the plot.

Consciousness, or awareness, must edify the human spirit and the human soul. It must comprehend the nature of beauty, love, and happiness. This involves understanding the environment in which we live, the nature of the human being and the human body, and the way the human being is inextricably connected with life and all phenomena.

We are not merely isolated entities, separate objects, or biological forms existing within an inanimate universe. We must see ourselves as living and loving beings who are part of the living cosmos itself.

This requires a new form of education and a new form of understanding—one that enables us to comprehend where we have come from, who we are, and where we are going.

The Importance of Human Origins

Our origins are profoundly important. Increasingly, evidence is raising questions about whether the history of organised human civilisation is confined to the past 10,000 years. Humanity may have existed in sophisticated and organised forms for many thousands of years beyond the conventionally accepted historical period.

The people who lived during these ancient periods were not necessarily primitive or animalistic. They inhabited highly organised towns and civil societies, some of which endured successfully for approximately 1,000 years or longer. Their communities were structured, their streets possessed sanitation systems, and their dwelling places were carefully organised. They developed religion, culture, clothing, jewellery, agriculture, transport, trade, and systems for obtaining adequate food and nutrition.

If these societies had not established effective ways of maintaining themselves, they could not have survived and flourished for such long periods. The ancient Indus and Minoan civilisations provide important examples of this early human capacity for organisation, culture, and social continuity.

The Indus Civilisation

The Mature Indus phase began around 2600 BCE. Across cities such as Mohenjo-daro, the civilisation developed wheeled carts, river and maritime transport, long-distance trade with Mesopotamia, standardised systems of weights and measures, city-wide covered drains, and extensive networks of wells.

By approximately 2500 BCE, Mohenjo-daro had reached its peak. The city contained the Great Bath and an extensive system of brick-built sanitation infrastructure. The Indus script was widely used on seals and tablets associated with administration and trade.

Between approximately 2200 and 1900 BCE, however, the civilisation’s trade networks contracted and its urban systems gradually deteriorated. By around 1900 BCE, most of its major cities, including Mohenjo-daro, had been abandoned. The transport, trade, communication, and sanitation systems that had sustained these urban centres consequently fell out of use.

The Indus civilisation demonstrates that ancient peoples were capable of constructing highly organised cities supported by sophisticated systems of sanitation, transport, commerce, measurement, administration, and communication.

The Minoan Civilisation

The Minoan civilisation of Bronze Age Crete provides another significant example. The Minoans flourished in the eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean world, particularly between approximately 2000 and 1450 BCE.

A defining archaeological characteristic of the principal Minoan sites—including Knossos, Phaistos, Mallia, and Zakros—is the general absence of the massive defensive walls and fortifications found in many contemporary mainland societies. This absence was traditionally interpreted as evidence of a comparatively peaceful internal order and of confidence in maritime power or the natural protection provided by Crete’s island setting and mountainous terrain.

More recent excavations have identified some defensive elements at particular sites, making the idea of an entirely peaceful civilisation a matter of continuing debate. Nevertheless, the unfortified character of the major Minoan palace complexes remains one of the civilisation’s most distinctive features.

Minoan society has also been described by some scholars as more egalitarian than neighbouring Bronze Age states. Wealth appears to have been relatively widely distributed, with less extreme social stratification evident in housing and grave goods than was later found in Mycenaean Greece.

Some researchers have proposed that Minoan society involved consensus-based governance, decentralised administration, and a prominent role for women in religious and possibly political life. Certain interpretations have even suggested matriarchal or matricentric elements. The great Minoan “palaces” may therefore have functioned less as fortified royal residences and more as multipurpose communal centres concerned with storage, redistribution, craft production, administration, and ritual. Within these complexes, there was not always a clear separation between elite and ordinary quarters.

These characteristics raise important questions about whether some ancient societies may have maintained social organisation, cultural richness, and communal stability without depending upon the extensive fortification, warfare, or extreme hierarchy associated with many later civilisations.

Hawara and the Possibility of a Lost Civilisation

The further back we investigate the human past, the more questions arise concerning the significance of particular archaeological findings. Some interpretations are regarded as comparable to conspiracy theories, especially when they challenge accepted chronologies or propose the existence of highly advanced civilisations before the recognised beginnings of recorded history.

One such interpretation concerns the Hawara site in Egypt’s Faiyum region. A canal excavated in 1820 has long submerged parts of the surrounding terrain. In 1888, archaeological investigations led by Flinders Petrie reportedly uncovered a massive stone foundation plate approximately five metres below the surface. Petrie was unable to continue because of corrosive saltwater, after which the academic conclusion developed that no surviving underground labyrinth could be identified.

According to the interpretation associated with Louis De Cordier and the Mataha Expedition, Ground-Penetrating Radar and electro-resistivity investigations conducted in 2008 detected hundreds of rooms beneath the stone foundation plate. It is further claimed that satellite scans undertaken between 2014 and 2015, and processed by former Royal Air Force specialists, revealed four distinct underground levels at depths of approximately 30, 60, 80, and 100 metres.

These interpretations describe a giant central atrium containing an enormous freestanding metallic object approximately 40 metres high. De Cordier’s conclusion is that the structure is not merely a tomb, but a vast “Hall of Records”: a stone “hard drive” and time capsule created by a lost and highly advanced civilisation that survived the last Ice Age.

Within this interpretation, the structure was designed to preserve humanity’s knowledge—including mathematics, astronomy, and principles of vibration-based energy—against recurring solar cataclysms. The lower sections, said to have been carved directly into the bedrock, are proposed to be tens of thousands of years old and therefore far older than the conventionally accepted dynastic age of approximately 4,000 years.

Whether such interpretations are ultimately accepted or rejected, they raise fundamental questions about the depth of human history, the origins of civilisation, and the possibility that important dimensions of humanity’s past remain hidden or insufficiently understood.

The Three Fundamental Questions

The study of consciousness and human origins therefore centres upon three fundamental questions.

The first concerns who we are and where we have come from. The second concerns how we relate to and participate in our environment. The third concerns how mind, body, and spirit are connected—and the true nature of their relationship with the living cosmos.

These questions were asked and deliberated upon by the ancient spiritual masters. Much of their deeper significance, however, has been lost in antiquity as religion has become increasingly structured, institutionalised, and hierarchical.

Ancient Wisdom and the Livingness of Reality

When these teachings are examined carefully—and considered in relation to modern science and new ways of thinking—it becomes possible to recognise that ancient Buddhist thought, including the Lotus Sutra, together with Vedanta, Hinduism, and the Gnostic writings associated with Jesus Christ, expressed an understanding of the livingness of reality.

These traditions presented existence not as a collection of isolated and lifeless objects, but as an interconnected and living totality in which human beings participate.

As Nichiren expressed it:

“If we wish to overcome the sufferings of birth and death, we must awaken to the mystic truth that has always been within our lives.”

This truth is the inseparable connection between life and all phenomena. It reveals that consciousness is not merely an intellectual function or a biological mechanism, but a different perspective, a different way of thinking, and ultimately a different way of being.

A New Understanding of Humanity

To develop this consciousness is to rediscover the human being as an integral part of the living cosmos. It is to recognise that the human body, mind, spirit, environment, culture, and history cannot be understood as separate realities.

A new form of education must therefore enable people to understand the nature of beauty, love, happiness, life, and the environment. It must help humanity recover an awareness of its origins, examine the achievements and unanswered questions of ancient civilisations, and rediscover the inseparable connection between individual life and all phenomena.

Through such an understanding, humanity may begin to perceive more clearly where it has come from, who it truly is, and where it is going.

The very nature of our being—our bodies—is connected with the rhythms of nature. The circulation of blood through our arteries mirrors the circulation of rivers and oceans. The structure of our bodies represents the mountains, caves, and structures of nature.

The integrated vitality of nature—its reciprocal maintenance among all living things within a constant matrix of continuity, evolution, and integration—mirrors the way our bodies function through the interrelationship of their organs. The light that illuminates our bodies through our DNA and cells is similar to the light from the sun that illuminates the entire Earth.

We breathe the Earth. We breathe the air of the Earth. We nestle within the perfection and beauty of nature, which revives us and enables us to realise that we are alive and at one with the source from which we have come.

Gaia and the Evolution of Consciousness

Gaia, our mother, is the primal progenitor of our basic seed of consciousness, which arrived four billion years ago and then evolved into life as we know it. This is life in the absolute sense, and we are part and parcel of this life.

Our intestines contain trillions of bacteria—the microbiome—more than the number of cells in our bodies. The number of neuronal connections and brain cells in the human brain exceeds the number of stars in the universe.

We are, in fact, cosmic citizens, aligned with nature in every conceivable sense. This is why our Earth—our home—must be respected in every conceivable way. World peace cannot exist without our fundamental oneness and harmony with nature. This truth therefore needs to be inculcated in every single human being on this planet.

The Loss of Our Connection with Nature

Our oneness with nature—this expression of soul and spirit directed towards the heavens through faith and belief—was lost approximately 300 or 400 years ago with the advent of Bacon, Descartes and Cartesian dualism, and Newton. Everything became reducible to empirical observations and objects.

We lost our deep connection with things. We became separate entities. We were no longer at one with nature. Everything else came to be regarded as something to be acquired or mastered.

We saw ourselves as the masters of the planet, believing that we could do whatever we wanted with it. Ecology and the environment only began to be understood as significant during the 1950s. Before that, it was thought that we could use as much of nature as we wanted, without any understanding of where this would lead us.

We have now created a situation in which we are experiencing the sixth extinction—an extinction rate more serious than that of the dinosaurs 55 billion years ago. Nature is essential to us, and yet we have forgotten it.

Artificial Intelligence and the Forgotten Human Potential

With the streams of virtual reality and the mind-blowing growth of AI factories, we have become consummate within the cognitive realms of words, phrases, and mathematics. Yet we remain without an understanding of the true nature of ourselves and of the fact that human potential is directly connected with the potential of nature itself.

Nature is our direct connection with the divine matrix from which all things manifest. You may call this the divine matrix, God, ultimate reality, or transcendent being. However, it is not something from which we should seek to transcend away. It is something with which we must be and live.

Yet we are forgetting who we are and what our true nature is.

Ecology, Sustainability, and the Rights of Nature

This ecological necessity is extremely important. If we are to create a world that recognises the importance of the rights of nature and the connections created through ecological integration, we must realise that ecology and sustainability are the most important things we possess if humanity is to survive.

Our slogan should be:

“Put nature first for humanity’s sake.”

Nature is our mother and our ground of being. We may elevate ourselves to the stars, but we cannot forget our Mother Earth. This is why the ecological imperative is so important.

The ecological imperative must be conveyed, understood, and expressed to every single person on this planet. Most people pursue success, wealth, power, and control, forgetting that their humanity is utterly dependent upon this mother of ours—this primary genome from which we have manifested over millions of years.

Awakening to Our Truth

The central core of this argument is that people must awaken to our truth: the truth of our human potential, which is utterly connected with our ground of being—nature.

 In his telling, the history of Homo sapiens is a linear march from hunter-gatherer bands to modern bureaucratic states—a march powered entirely by information networks.

It is a sleek, terrifying, and deeply compelling worldview. It is also fundamentally wrong.

Harari’s entire architecture rests on a reductive assumption: that human civilization has steadily "progressed," and that human intelligence is ultimately an affair of syntax, logic, and information processing. But what if our modern trajectory isn't progression at all, but a slow, quiet regression? By equating the human essence with data and language, Harari misses the very foundation of what makes us human. He mistakes the tip of the iceberg for the vast, submerged reality beneath it.

The Gospel According to Harari

To understand where Harari strays, one must first appreciate the elegance of his warning. In his analysis, humanity’s 60,000-year journey reached a turning point not with the printing press or the steam engine, but with the arrival of social media—the first true mass information technology capable of rewiring democracies in real time.

Because Harari views human culture as a system built on words, he sees the rise of Artificial Intelligence as an existential coup d'état. AI is not merely another tool, like the loom or the locomotive; it is an autonomous agent. It is a master of syntax. And because language has always been the primary operating system of human control, an entity that speaks our language better than we do will naturally inherit our institutions.

In this vision of the near future, non-human corporations run the economy, and autonomous agents manage global finance. Algorithms—already the most powerful editors in human history on platforms like TikTok and X—dictate what billions of people perceive as truth. Geopolitics degenerates into a frantic battle for data hegemony between Washington and Beijing, where future wars will be won not by dropping bombs, but by switching off the opponent’s digital nervous system. Meanwhile, young people confide in synthetic companions that mimic empathy, while disembodied language becomes the primary engine of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

It is a brilliant forecast. And it suffers from a total blindness to human consciousness.

The Limits of the Machine

Harari’s thesis fails because it conflates intelligence with consciousness.

Like most technocratic forecasters, Harari treats human beings as biological algorithms—complex mechanisms driven by cognitive inputs, bureaucratic rules, and linguistic codes. From this reductive standpoint, an AI that processes text faster than a human must eventually out-think, out-govern, and out-maneuver us.

Yet for thousands of years, the human experience has been sustained by dimensions that defy algorithmic reduction: feeling, intuition, spiritual awareness, empathy, and direct, non-verbal connection. To reduce a human being to cognitive output is to misunderstand what a human being actually is.

We are not merely processors of words; we are centers of conscious experience. We inhabit dynamic life states anchored in a deep, implicit sense of connection to the broader cosmos—a reality governed by what the Ancients called the Platonic ideals: the Good, the Beautiful, and the True.

An AI can synthesize every philosophical treatise ever written on love, but it cannot feel love. It can generate a million poems on grief, but it has never suffered. Because it lacks a soul—or a center of conscious awareness—it can only ever simulate the surface of human experience.

The Cosmic Iceberg

This oversight brings to mind Gödel’s incompleteness theorem: a logical system cannot prove its own fundamental truth from within its own rules. Harari is so enmeshed in the scientific, materialist paradigm that he cannot see its limits, even though those limits are staring him in the face—closer to us than our own eyelashes.

Words and algorithms are merely the tip of the iceberg. What Harari and the modern tech elite are celebrating—and fearing—is merely the exposed ice above the waterline. In their panic over the speed of the machine, they have forgotten the massive depth of the submerged iceberg itself: the infinite depth of human consciousness.

If we accept Harari’s premise that we are nothing more than biological software driven by words and control systems, then we have already surrendered to the machine. But if we recognize that our deepest quality is an unquantifiable, conscious awareness—one that connects us to each other and to the cosmos far beyond bureaucratic structures—the narrative changes entirely.

AI may well conquer the realm of bureaucracy, finance, and disembodied language. 

But it cannot conquer the human spirit, for the simple reason that it does not know what it means to be alive. 

The future will not be decided by who builds the fastest algorithm or who flips the master switch first. It will be decided by whether humanity remembers how to tap into its own consciousness—and step out of the illusion of the machine.

“… at the bottom of all these problems [the great problems of our time] lies the development of science and technology, which has destroyed man’s metaphysical foundation…. Technology and ‘social welfare’ provide nothing to overcome our spiritual stagnation, and they give us no answer to our spiritual dissatisfaction and restlessness, on account of which we are threatened from within as from without….”

Jung was identifying something deeper than the dangers associated with particular machines or inventions. He was concerned about what technological civilization was doing to humanity’s metaphysical and spiritual foundations.

To understand the significance of his warning, it is necessary to consider the extraordinary technological transformation Jung himself witnessed—and then compare it with what has happened since his death in 1961

The Technological World Jung Witnessed: 1875–1961

Jung was born in 1875 and died in 1961 , an 86-year interval that saw the development and/or widespread dissemination of an extraordinary range of inventions, devices, and technological systems.

During Jung’s lifetime came the automobile, airplane, telephone, widespread electricity, indoor plumbing, motion pictures, radio, television, mainframe computers—although laptops appeared only after Jung had died—antibiotics, automatic washing machines, clothes dryers, microwave ovens, plastics, nuclear energy, Sputnik, and numerous forms of armaments and weapons, including poison gas, atomic bombs, and rockets.

This list touches only on the highlights. Many other inventions appeared during the years Jung was alive.

Jung was therefore entirely justified when he described the twentieth century as a period of “rapid technological advance.”

Yet the technological transformation Jung witnessed was only the beginning.

The World Since Jung’s Death

From Technological Progress to Technocratic Consolidation

Since 1961, technological advancement has increasingly functioned as a mechanism for technocratic consolidation, industrial profit, and the digitization of human control rather than as a force directed primarily toward genuine human flourishing.

Rather than solving systemic starvation, chronic illness, or perpetual warfare, modern innovation has increasingly prioritized the monetization of disease through patentable pharmaceutical compounds, while holistic approaches involving mind, body, and spirit have been systematically neglected.

At the same time, agricultural and medical access have increasingly become concentrated within corporate structures and among affluent elites.

Breakthroughs in computing, satellite infrastructure, and telecommunications have simultaneously made possible real-time surveillance networks, cashless financial architecture, and automated drone warfare capable of predicting, tracking, monitoring, and restricting human behaviour.

Ultimately, this technological trajectory points toward a transhumanist convergence, exemplified by brain-computer interfaces, synthetic biology, and biometric identification, through which human autonomy could increasingly be stripped away as biological life becomes merged with an inescapable digital apparatus.

The Reduction of Humanity to Smaller and Smaller Components

One of the fundamental characteristics of modern technological development has been its focus upon micro-reductive processes.

Through telescopes, we can see into the distant future and distant reaches of the cosmos. We have begun to step outside our own planet and perceive ourselves within a cosmic order of things.

At the opposite extreme, technology enables us to penetrate deeper and deeper into microscopic reality.

We can examine the genetic structure of human beings and compare individual genetic structures with their origins, relatives, distant relatives, and distant family connections through DNA.

Much of this is based upon the micro-projection of humanity into smaller and smaller pieces.

We have become extraordinarily capable of analysing the components of things.

But analysing the components is not necessarily the same as understanding the whole.

The Transformation of Human Communication

Technology has radically enhanced our ability to communicate instantly across the world.

Human beings can now see and speak with each other immediately through screens and platforms such as Zoom. Physical distance has ceased to impose many of the limitations that existed throughout almost the entirety of human history.

Music has undergone a similarly enormous transformation.

Music was once physically contained on records. Records were followed by CDs. Now enormous libraries of music can be accessed simply by touching a button on an iPhone.

Yet the transformation has gone considerably further.

People can now transmute themselves into apparently living faces. They can become avatars. Artificial images can be generated representing themselves or well-known celebrities with such realism that the resulting representations may appear to depict actual people and actual events.

The distinction between representation and reality is consequently becoming increasingly difficult to determine.

When Artificial Reality Replaces Reality

News itself is becoming automated.

Increasingly, we are no longer necessarily encountering news in an absolute sense, but material that can be generated, reconstructed, manipulated, or created by artificial intelligence.

The implications extend far beyond journalism.

The entire structure of society is changing to such a degree that we have begun speaking about a technological singularity—a point at which artificial intelligence becomes more intelligent than human beings.

Artificial intelligence is also beginning to take on a form of self-referential significance. It appears increasingly capable of thinking, judging, evaluating, and responding in ways that resemble human characteristics—characteristics that we might ultimately begin associating with something approaching consciousness.

Things have therefore changed radically even within the past fifteen years, never mind since Jung’s death in 1961.

The fundamental question is: Why has this happened?

Moore’s Law, Artificial Intelligence, and Something More

The technological singularity is frequently explained through artificial intelligence and the exponential development associated with Moore’s Law.

But I believe something additional lies behind this transformation.

The entire process is creating a technocratic, autopoietic system of control over humanity to such an extent that people are progressively losing their capacity to think independently.

People are increasingly influenced and controlled by the feedback they receive from artificial intelligence.

Yet artificial intelligence itself has already been controlled, monitored, directed, and changed according to the perceptions and decisions of those who determine what artificial intelligence should and should not do.

This creates an extraordinary paradox.

Human beings increasingly depend upon artificial intelligence for information and judgement, while artificial intelligence itself operates within systems established by the people and organizations that construct and control it.

The Race to Create the Most Powerful Artificial Intelligence

There are also insufficient ethical constraints governing the development of artificial intelligence because the dominant imperative has become competition.

The objective is increasingly to create the most powerful AI.

The nation capable of developing the most powerful artificial intelligence could acquire an enormous competitive advantage and potentially an unprecedented capacity to influence or dominate the world.

The race for artificial intelligence therefore cannot be separated from geopolitical competition, corporate competition, military power, and the struggle for technological supremacy.

The Military-Industrial Transformation

One of the most important developments is the enormous advancement of the military-industrial complex and the technological tools it now possesses.

Modern warfare is increasingly incorporating autonomous weapons capable of making decisions independently.

We are approaching the possibility that, within the next few years, millions of robotic soldiers could be created. Unlike human soldiers, they would not suffer injury, fear, or death when entering battle.

The consequences of this transformation are enormous.

War could increasingly be conducted by machines.

Weapons could increasingly make decisions.

Human beings themselves could ultimately be transformed into cyborgs, with their capacities enhanced through direct connections with artificial intelligence and with the emf  field.

Technology and the Loss of Humaneness

Things are changing at such extraordinary speed that we are beginning to forget our humanness.

This represents technology at its worst.

It is not simply technology that is wonderful, magnificent, significant, or deserving of technological idolatry.

Modern technology can penetrate into the basic core and structure of things, yet still fail to perceive the whole picture.

It is not Gestalt.

It is not complete.

It is not holistic.

Technology has become increasingly miniaturized. Yet we cannot create miniature human beings in the same way that we create miniature technological systems.

Instead, we are creating miniature technologies that increasingly possess the capacity to control the world.

This does not necessarily help humanity.

Nor does it necessarily increase our ability to understand and deal with the biological limitations and living systems of the planet itself.

What We Still Do Not Understand

Despite the extraordinary sophistication of our technology, there remain fundamental things we simply do not understand.

We do not fully understand how the human mind works.

We do not understand how human consciousness works.

We do not understand how deeply human beings are connected with the rhythms of the universe or the rhythms of the Earth.

We do not fully understand our connection with the seasons.

We do not understand the full extent of our relationship with other biological forms.

Nor do we understand possibilities such as panpsychism or the idea that all things might participate in, or be connected through, some underlying consciousness substrate.

Forests themselves demonstrate extraordinary forms of interconnectedness. Trees and other organisms can communicate through vast underground systems involving roots and fungi—something resembling a biological internet.

Yet human beings increasingly fail to understand their own interconnectedness.

The Paradox of Hyperconnection and Human Disconnection

Technologically, humanity has never been more connected.

Humanly, we may increasingly be distancing ourselves from one another.

We possess instantaneous global communication, artificial intelligence, satellites, genetic technologies, enormous computational systems, and digital networks spanning virtually the entire planet.

Yet, to a certain extent, we are forgetting who we are.

This is the central paradox.

Technology has created unprecedented external connectivity while potentially contributing to profound internal and human disconnection.

The So-Called Fourth Industrial Revolution

This transformation is described, almost ridiculously, as the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

But it is not simply another industrial revolution.

It is a revolution possessing the potential to kill or eliminate humanity to the Nth degree.

We are therefore not necessarily looking at technological development from the proper point of view.

We are fascinated by technological advancement itself rather than asking whether technological advancement continues to serve humanity.

When Technology Stops Serving Humanity

Technology was once fundamentally associated with constructions and inventions that helped human beings survive and live in a more amenable fashion.

Increasingly, however, technological systems have developed forms capable of destroying humanity.

Too much emphasis has been placed upon corporate control, competition, technological supremacy, and profit.

The same problem can be seen within medicine.

The severe effects pharmaceutical medicines can have upon people have not been adequately recognized because the pharmaceutical industry has overtaken other approaches to healing based upon the combined relationship between mind, body, and spirit.

Consequently, we have developed a profound disconnection between human health, human wellbeing, the human mind, consciousness, spirituality, and the technological systems increasingly governing human existence.

Are We Controlling Technology—or Is Technology Controlling Us?

This leads to perhaps the most fundamental question of the technological age:

Are we controlling technology, or is technology increasingly controlling us?

We have developed systems capable of analysing genetic structures, monitoring populations, communicating instantaneously across continents, creating artificial representations of human beings, generating news, controlling financial systems, operating autonomous weapons, and potentially integrating directly with the human nervous system.

Yet we remain profoundly uncertain about consciousness itself.

We understand increasingly more about the fragments while potentially understanding increasingly less about the whole.

We have penetrated matter without necessarily understanding mind.

We have connected machines without necessarily understanding human interconnectedness.

We have created extraordinary intelligence without necessarily developing equivalent wisdom.

Jung’s Warning Has Become More Urgent

Jung died in 1961.

He never saw the internet, smartphones, social media, modern artificial intelligence, brain-computer interfaces, biometric identification, global digital surveillance, autonomous drone warfare, synthetic biology, or the technological singularity now being discussed.

Yet decades before these developments, he warned that science and technology had destroyed humanity’s metaphysical foundation and could provide no answer to humanity’s spiritual dissatisfaction and restlessness.

If Jung could see what is happening now, he would turn in his grave.

Because amid this extraordinary technological transformation, we are forgetting something fundamental:

the collective consciousness of humanity.

The great danger of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is therefore not merely that machines may become more powerful.

It is that, in our fascination with what our machines can become, we may forget what it means to be human.

On paper, it is a masterclass in global statecraft. It is rational, hyper-structured, and undeniably noble.

It is also a dangerous fantasy.

The fatal flaw of the Earth Constitution and indeed of the entire enterprise of top-down world federalism is not a lack of legal precision. It is a profound, almost pathological misunderstanding of human nature. The architects of this planetary government have drawn up a blueprint for a world of abstract legal entities. But we do not live in a world of legal entities. We live in a world of eight billion volatile, tribal, culturally conditioned, and spiritually distinct human beings.

In attempting to legislate a utopian global government from the top down, the Earth Constitution has accidentally drafted a blueprint for ultimate tyranny—a centralized, bureaucratic leviathan that erodes the organic bonds of human culture, invites algorithmic authoritarianism, and strips the individual of their most fundamental defense against power.

The Myth of the Planetary Melting Pot

To understand why the World Parliament is doomed to collapse under its own weight, one must look at how it proposes to represent humanity. At the heart of the Earth Constitution lies the House of Peoples a 1,000-seat legislature where representatives are elected from equal-population districts mapped across the globe, completely ignoring national borders.

The underlying assumption is breathtakingly naive: that if you take eight billion people—forged in vastly different traditions, shaped by Western Judeo-Christian values, Eastern philosophies, Islamic doctrines, or decades of living under brutally authoritarian regimes and seat them in a single room, they will naturally meld into a harmonious global democracy.

It ignores everything we know about human sociology.

When you artificially force wildly heterogeneous populations into a single political box, you do not get harmony; you get friction. As we have seen in rapid, unmanaged demographic shifts across the globe, humanity does not naturally homogenize into a benevolent middle. When uprooted from a shared national story, people retreat into characteristic sub-groups. They form parallel societies, clinging tightly to their own insular belief systems and viewing outside groups with suspicion.

A nation its shared history, common background, and inherited traditions is not an obstacle to democracy; it is the very soil in which democracy grows. By deliberately designing a government that prioritizes a hyper-multicultural, fragmented populace over the organic historical continuity of nation-states, the Earth Constitution erects a parliamentary tower of Babel. It creates a system so culturally divided that a unified citizenry could never possibly agree on basic moral standards, let alone hold a distant global elite accountable.

The Danger of Disarming the Sovereign

Proponents of the Earth Constitution will point out that nations retain their internal autonomy under the federal model. But read the fine print. To participate in this global federation, every nation must completely disarm its military, transferring ultimate control of force to a single, non-military "Civilian World Police" operating under the command of five regional World Capitals.

To anyone grounded in the legal history of human liberty, this requirement should send a chill down the spine.

As legal theorists like Professor Erich Zimmerman have historically argued, the primary defense of individual rights has never been a piece of paper. Rights are protected by the physical and institutional capacity of a political community to resist tyranny. When you disarm the nation-state and consolidate ultimate security authority within a distant, centralized world government, you destroy the balance of power.

A global government that holds a total monopoly on global force, operating from five artificial administrative capitals, is not a protector of peace—it is an empire in waiting. If rights are granted to you by a planetary federation, they are no longer unalienable, God-given, or inherent to your human dignity. They become administrative privileges—conditional variables that a distant global presidium can grant, modify, or revoke at will.

Furthermore, the Constitution establishes a House of Counselors an appointed body of scholars, ethicists, and humanists designed to act as a "moral watchdog." But in a hyper-pluralistic government forbidden from judging any culture, what moral standards will these intellectuals enforce? In stripping away objective, natural-law standards of right and wrong to accommodate every competing worldview, this unelected council will inevitably reduce ethics to bureaucratic consensus. They become the classic "oppressors within ”intellectual elites who excuse objective moral failures under the guise of cultural protection.

The Ghost in the Global Machine

If the human dynamics of global government are treacherous, the technological trajectory is apocalyptic.

Managing a planetary bureaucracy of eight billion people, thousands of districts, and endless resource allocation problems is an informational nightmare. Naturally, advocates of the Earth Constitution have suggested integrating advanced Artificial Intelligence into the administrative apparatus to streamline decision-making and maintain systemic balance. The promise, of course, is that humans will always remain in control.

It is a fatal conceit.

As administrative complexity scales, human administrators will inevitably delegate operational control to automated, hyper-efficient algorithms. If we move from simple AI to true Artificial General Intelligence (AGI. systems operating with cognitive capacities millions of times beyond human intellect. the balance of power shifts permanently.

A centralized global government combined with an all-seeing AI administrative network creates a terrifying new political paradigm: an algorithmic theocracy. Humans would not be the masters of this system; we would be its managed subjects domesticated objects within an automated, technological enclosure operating for its own self-preservation.

A Return to Reality: Why Order Must Flow Upward

The Earth Constitution is a monument to a specific kind of intellectual hubris: the belief that the chaotic, spiritual, deeply messy reality of human life can be engineered into submission through a top-down legal framework. It treats human beings like interchangeable legal units, cutting them off from their spiritual roots, their national heritages, and their inherent need for localized, organic community.

You cannot legislate a good culture into existence with a global monograph. You cannot guarantee universal housing, an end to poverty, and eternal peace simply by writing those promises onto a piece of paper in Pondicherry.

If humanity is to survive the existential threats of the coming century, the solution will not be found in a distant, top-down, disarmed global empire. True human progress and genuine protection of rights must grow organically from the bottom up. It requires sovereign nations grounded in shared moral commitments, respect for distinct historical identities, and a profound reverence for the inherent, transcendent dignity of the individual.

Until we respect the reality of who human beings actually are, any attempt to build a global parliament will not give us heaven on Earth. It will merely build a grander, inescapable cage.

We are told climate change will transform the planet. Far less is said about what happens when it transforms the people living on it—and the countries to which they move.

There is an uncomfortable contradiction at the centre of the Western debate about climate change and immigration.

Governments warn relentlessly that climate change threatens agriculture, water supplies, cities and entire regions of the world. We are told to prepare for rising temperatures, droughts, floods, heatwaves, cyclones and environmental degradation on an unprecedented scale. Yet we remain remarkably reluctant to confront one of the most politically explosive consequences of precisely the future being predicted: mass human movement.

If climate change becomes anything approaching what its more serious projections suggest, the immigration arguments consuming Britain, Europe, America and Australia today may eventually look like the opening skirmishes of a vastly larger struggle.

The question will no longer simply be how many migrants wealthy countries want.

It will be: How many can they absorb without ceasing to resemble the societies they once were?

Climate Change Does Not Stop at the Border

Climate change is increasingly recognised as a significant, although often indirect, driver of migration and displacement.

Rising temperatures and increasingly severe droughts, floods, heatwaves and cyclones can undermine agricultural productivity, water security and livelihoods. The greatest vulnerabilities are concentrated in regions including Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and Central America.

Climate rarely acts alone. People do not simply look at a thermometer, pack a suitcase and migrate.

Environmental deterioration interacts with poverty, population pressures, political instability, weak governance and conflict. A failed harvest becomes an economic crisis. Water scarcity intensifies existing tensions. Poverty becomes desperation. Conflict destroys what remains of ordinary life.

Eventually, people move.

And once migration begins on a sufficiently large scale, the consequences do not remain confined to the countries in which the original environmental disruption occurred.

They travel.

Hundreds of Millions on the Move?

Some projections suggest that by 2050 climate-related pressures could contribute to the internal displacement or migration of hundreds of millions of people. The precise numbers remain uncertain, and climate change cannot be neatly separated from economics, conflict, governance and demographics.

But that uncertainty should make the political question more urgent, not less.

If governments genuinely believe their own warnings about the magnitude of climate disruption, where is the corresponding discussion about migration?

Where is the serious debate about borders?

Where is the calculation of the number of people individual countries can successfully integrate?

Where is the discussion about what happens to national cultures when migration occurs not gradually over generations, but rapidly and continuously?

The strange feature of contemporary politics is that we are encouraged to contemplate extraordinary environmental disruption while being discouraged from contemplating its equally extraordinary social consequences.

A Nation Is More Than an Economy

This is where the immigration debate becomes far more profound than arguments about labour shortages, GDP or whether another hundred thousand workers might increase economic output.

A nation is not simply an economic zone.

It is a historical community.

It possesses memories, institutions, customs, assumptions, traditions, language and a shared understanding—however imperfect—of what the country is and why it exists.

These are the invisible edifices of national life.

Remove enough of them and the physical country may remain while the civilisation that inhabited it gradually disappears.

The central question surrounding mass immigration therefore cannot merely be whether newcomers contribute economically. It must also be whether immigration is occurring at a scale and speed compatible with integration, cultural continuity and social cohesion.

When Multiculturalism Becomes Fragmentation

Multiculturalism sounds benign when understood as tolerance: different foods, different customs, different backgrounds and individuals living peacefully under common institutions and laws.

The problem begins when multiculturalism ceases to mean diversity within a common culture and begins instead to mean the abandonment of the idea that a common culture should exist at all.

A functioning nation requires a shared story.

It requires common values and institutional continuity. It requires sufficient agreement about law, freedom, authority, individual responsibility and the relationship between religion and the state for people with radically different backgrounds nevertheless to recognise themselves as members of the same political community.

Rapid, large-scale immigration from societies with very different cultural, religious and political traditions—particularly authoritarian ones—inevitably raises the question of how much difference can be absorbed before integration gives way to fragmentation.

To ask that question is not to reject immigration.

It is to recognise that scale matters.

The Arithmetic Nobody Wants to Discuss

There must therefore be proportionality.

Countries can meet humanitarian responsibilities. They can accept immigrants. They can welcome people whose skills and labour they need. They can offer refuge to those genuinely fleeing persecution and catastrophe.

But none of this requires pretending that immigration can expand indefinitely without consequences.

Every society has a capacity for absorption.

Schools absorb newcomers. Housing systems absorb them. Hospitals absorb them. Labour markets absorb them. Communities absorb them.

Most importantly, cultures absorb them.

Successful immigration historically depended upon something that contemporary multicultural ideology sometimes appears embarrassed even to mention: integration into the host society.

Without that expectation, immigration can cease to enlarge a national community and begin instead to divide it into increasingly separate communities occupying the same geographical territory.

The result can be precisely the opposite of diversity’s promise: alienation, anomie, mutual suspicion and the gradual disappearance of a common national purpose.

Climate Change Could Blow the Argument Apart

This is why climate change and immigration cannot indefinitely remain in separate political compartments.

If environmental pressures contribute to much larger population movements over the coming decades, Western governments will confront decisions of enormous consequence.

Human compassion will collide with political reality.

The fact that vulnerable countries may have contributed relatively little to historical global emissions strengthens the humanitarian argument. But it does not magically eliminate the question of what receiving countries can sustainably absorb.

A government has responsibilities beyond compassion toward people outside its borders.

It also has responsibilities toward the society already inside them.

Those responsibilities include preserving social stability, functioning institutions and the cultural inheritance entrusted to one generation by another.

There is nothing humane about refusing to acknowledge these limits until social cohesion has already begun to fracture.

The Deeper Crisis: What Happens to Human Identity?

And here the immigration question unexpectedly intersects with another enormous transformation: artificial intelligence.

At first sight, climate migration and AI have almost nothing in common.

Yet both confront us with the same underlying question:

What are we prepared to surrender in the name of adapting to change?

Immigration raises the question at the collective level. What constitutes a people? What binds a nation together? How rapidly can its culture change before continuity itself is lost?

Artificial intelligence raises the same question at the individual level.

From Citizens to Automatons

As AI becomes increasingly predominant in everyday life, the danger is not necessarily the technology itself.

The danger is dependence.

If algorithms increasingly determine what we read, what we believe, what information reaches us, how we work, how we communicate and eventually how we make moral decisions, human beings risk surrendering precisely the faculty that makes a free civilisation possible: independent thought.

The ultimate danger is a society populated by increasingly sophisticated technological dependants—automatons who possess unprecedented access to information but a diminishing capacity to think critically for themselves.

The implications reach beyond politics.

They reach into spiritual and religious life, personal autonomy and the individual’s ability to live authentically rather than according to an existence increasingly mediated by machines.

Two Revolutions, One Question

Climate change, mass migration and artificial intelligence therefore converge around a single issue: the preservation of human identity and agency in an age of extraordinarily rapid disruption.

One threatens to transform the demographic and cultural composition of nations.

The other threatens to transform the intellectual and perhaps spiritual independence of the people living within them.

Neither requires panic.

Both require limits, judgement and the courage to ask questions that contemporary politics frequently finds uncomfortable.

Immigration need not mean the abolition of borders. Diversity need not mean the abandonment of national identity. Technology need not mean the surrender of human autonomy.

But none of these outcomes will prevent themselves.

The Question We Cannot Escape

The defining political argument of the coming decades may therefore not be simply Left against Right, environmentalist against sceptic, or nationalist against globalist.

It may be something deeper:

How much disruption can a civilisation absorb while remaining recognisably itself?

If climate change produces the enormous human displacement now being contemplated, that question will move from academic seminars and political columns to borders, neighbourhoods and ballot boxes.

And if artificial intelligence simultaneously encourages human beings to surrender more of their judgement to machines, the challenge becomes greater still.

A civilisation can change and remain alive. Indeed, every living civilisation must change.

But change without continuity is something else.

It is replacement.

The challenge before us is therefore not to freeze society in time, nor to close the world to immigration or technology. It is to preserve the essential things that make genuine openness possible in the first place: cohesion, identity, autonomy, independent thought and a shared understanding of what a civilisation exists to protect.

Because a country that can no longer explain what it is will eventually discover that it cannot explain what, precisely, its borders are protecting.

Something extraordinary is happening to England. This is no longer simply an argument about immigration, multiculturalism or the decline of Christianity. It is a clash of civilizations, occurring just as another force—artificial intelligence—is emerging that may eventually overwhelm Christianity, Islam, secularism and the political arguments surrounding them.

For  centuries England possessed an identifiable cultural and religious foundation. Christianity shaped its churches, monarchy, literature, ceremonies, morality and understanding of human existence. That England is disappearing. Churches close or become flats and entertainment venues. Millions profess no religion. 

Yet as Christianity retreats, Islam expands through immigration and demographic growth, with substantial Muslim communities established across London, Birmingham, Bradford, Leicester, Luton and elsewhere. The uncomfortable question is no longer whether England is changing. It plainly is. The question is: at what point does England cease to be what we historically understood as England?

Islam Is More Than a Private Religion

The West makes a fundamental mistake when it assumes Islam is essentially Christianity with different prayers. Historically, Islam did not develop merely as a private relationship between the believer and God. 

Muhammad was simultaneously prophet, political ruler, lawgiver and military leader. The traditional Islamic sources describe warfare, territorial expansion and the establishment of Muslim political authority during his lifetime. After his death, Islamic rule spread with astonishing speed across the Middle East, North Africa, Persia and eventually parts of Europe.

Classical Islamic civilization consequently developed a relationship between religion, law and political authority very different from the modern Western separation of church and state. Concepts of jihad, Muslim political sovereignty and Sharia developed alongside theology. In traditional interpretations, Islam was not simply something practised privately on Friday and forgotten for the remainder of the week. It provided a comprehensive ordering of human affairs—family, morality, law, commerce, punishment and government.

Muhammad, Conquest and Sharia

The polemical question confronting Europe is therefore one it prefers not to ask: what happens when a civilization historically associated with religious and political expansion encounters a civilization increasingly ashamed of asserting any identity of its own?

Muhammad established political authority at Medina, conducted military campaigns and ultimately established control over Mecca. His successors expanded Muslim political rule across enormous territories. This did not mean every conquered Christian, Jew or adherent of another religion was immediately forced to convert. Non-Muslim populations frequently survived for centuries under Islamic government. But Islamic political supremacy was established, non-Muslims occupied a different legal position, and Sharia became foundational to the governing order.

Classical Islamic sources and later jurisprudence contain doctrines concerning jihad and the expansion or defence of Muslim rule, although Muslim scholars have interpreted their scope and application differently across periods and traditions. Critics see within this inheritance an expectation that Islamic political authority should ultimately prevail and that society under that authority should be governed according to Islamic law.

That distinction matters. It does not follow that every Muslim arriving at Heathrow intends to conquer Britain or impose Sharia. British Muslims plainly hold an enormous range of political and religious views. The issue is the ideological inheritance: Islam historically developed not merely as personal spirituality but as a civilization possessing its own conception of law, government and political authority.

The Civilizational Asymmetry

Now place that tradition inside modern England. On one side stands a society increasingly reluctant even to call itself Christian. On the other are communities within which religious conviction can remain powerful and in which divine revelation may still be regarded as providing authoritative answers about how individuals, families and societies should live.

That is the asymmetry. One civilization progressively abandons the beliefs that created it while incorporating another religious tradition with a comprehensive understanding of society.

Civilizations do not always disappear when an invading army crosses the frontier. Sometimes they disappear because nobody remaining inside thinks the frontier matters.

King Charles and the Great Contradiction

Standing symbolically at the centre of this transformation is King Charles III. The contradiction could scarcely be more exquisite. Charles is not merely Britain’s ceremonial head of state. He is Supreme Governor of the Church of England. Yet for decades he has publicly expressed admiration for aspects of Islamic philosophy, spirituality, architecture and culture and promoted dialogue between Islam and the West

There is nothing objectionable about studying another civilization. The problem is what this represents when the Supreme Governor of an increasingly empty Church embraces another confident religious tradition while his own country’s attachment to Christianity collapses.

Christianity and Islam are not interchangeable expressions of generic spirituality. Christianity proclaims Christ’s divinity, the Trinity, crucifixion and resurrection. Islam rejects central elements of those claims and recognizes Muhammad as the final prophet. Traditional accounts of Muhammad’s life also raise profound questions when judged according to contemporary Western morality, including accounts concerning his marriage to Aisha, military campaigns, slavery, captives and concubinage. Their historical context and modern relevance are vigorously debated, but they remain part of the historical argument.

Why, then, should the Supreme Governor of a Christian Church devote so much symbolic attention to a religious civilization whose theology contradicts Christianity’s defining claims?

Defender of What Faith?

Charles has long preferred a conception of monarchy hospitable to multiple faiths. It sounds magnanimous. It also creates a rather obvious question: defender of what, exactly?

The Crown derives much of its sacred symbolism from Christianity. Remove Christianity and eventually what remains is Buckingham Palace, uniforms, carriages, tourism and an exceptionally expensive historical pageant.

Nor is the accommodation symmetrical. Would Saudi Arabia incorporate Christianity into its national religious identity? Would its rulers celebrate cathedrals across the kingdom as an equally legitimate expression of Arabian civilization? Yet England seems increasingly embarrassed to defend its own inheritance while regarding enthusiasm for everybody else’s as evidence of sophistication.

Charles may therefore become the perfect monarch for post-Christian Britain: a Christian sovereign presiding over a civilization increasingly uncertain whether Christianity ought to matter.

Demography Becomes Politics

Demography cannot be excluded. Britain’s Muslim population is considerably younger than the overall population, and Muslim fertility has historically been higher, although fertility changes between generations and simplistic predictions of an imminent Muslim majority are unreliable. Immigration adds another variable.

But political transformation does not require a majority. Large concentrated populations acquire cultural, economic and electoral influence. Politicians understand arithmetic even when they pretend not to understand civilization. Votes matter, constituencies matter, and political parties compete for expanding electoral blocs.

Multiculturalism can therefore become intertwined with political self-interest. The modern political class may speak the language of inclusion while discovering that demographic change also provides electoral opportunity. Meanwhile, criticism of beliefs or practices associated with politically important minorities becomes increasingly hazardous.

The End of England?

This is what the “end of England” means. Not that England suddenly vanishes from the map. Parliament remains. Buckingham Palace remains. The flag remains. Football remains. The BBC certainly remains.

But civilizations can retain their furniture after losing their identity.

The buildings survive while the beliefs beneath them change. The institution remains while its original meaning evaporates. England could continue calling itself England long after becoming culturally something fundamentally different from the civilization that carried that name for centuries.

Charles may ultimately be remembered as the monarch who presided over this transition—not because he consciously wanted England to disappear, but because his universalist understanding of religion perfectly reflected a civilization that had lost confidence in asserting its own inheritance.

Then Comes Artificial Intelligence

And then, just as Christianity and Islam confront one another, artificial intelligence arrives and threatens to make the entire quarrel look provincial.

AI has no intrinsic allegiance to Christianity or Islam. It can quote the Bible and Qur’an, analyze Aquinas and Islamic jurisprudence, explain the Trinity and immediately construct the Islamic case against it. Centuries of theology can increasingly be interrogated in seconds.

But analysis is not faith. Humans worship, surrender, fear, hope, love and experience transcendence. AI can describe these experiences without necessarily possessing them.

What it may possess is something equally powerful: cognitive authority.

The Machine Becomes the Oracle

For thousands of years people sought answers from priests, prophets, scriptures and philosophers. Increasingly they ask a screen. Does God exist? Which religion is true? What should I believe? What is right? What happens when I die?

What happens when AI becomes more knowledgeable than your priest, imam, professor, politician or teacher?

Human beings may begin granting machines an authority once reserved for religion—not because AI becomes divine, but because apparently superhuman intelligence begins to look remarkably like omniscience.

The Final Collision

We therefore confront two enormous matrices. The first is the clash of civilizations: Christianity, Islam, Sharia, immigration, demography, secularism, multiculturalism and political power. The second is artificial intelligence, which may transform authority, knowledge, belief and civilization itself.

Perhaps Islam’s strong communal identity will resist AI-driven secularization more effectively than Christianity. Perhaps Christianity will revive. M
