Suffice to say, I’m experiencing what it’s like to get dressed each day through a new lens and rediscovering the joy of clothing as expression, not just pure utility or, more painfully, camouflage.

Which brings me to the topic of fashion… As I rebuild my wardrobe (a privilege to be sure!), I’ve weighed current trends presented on digital channels with what feels authentic to me. Some trends, serendipitously, align — pops of cherry red! Others have introduced new silhouettes I’ll likely wear for years.

This practice, I hope, will not only help me curate a wardrobe with lasting power (i.e. quality pieces that make sense in multiple settings across multiple seasons for many years), but also with integrity.

Now, “integrity” sounds a bit serious when used to reference something as relatively unserious as clothing, but bear with me… There are just some trends I cannot, to my bones, abide. For example: early 2000s sunglasses (this style in particular) and the royal purple everyone is loving this season (I can’t unsee Barney & Friends). Other micro trends (say a cummerbund) don’t align with my lifestyle (realtor + creative) or setting (southern resort town).

In abstaining from what isn’t necessarily suited to me, I’m able to hone in on what is: the colors I’m innately drawn to, materials that make sense for me, silhouettes that I love (and suit me!)…

Like I said, a fashion girl I am not! So here’s how I’m shopping and styling for Fall and Winter (which are basically the same thing where I live).

BOTTOMS

When it comes to pants, I find the style/fit that works for me and stick with it. Denim is so subjective, so all I’ll say on the subject is that I’ve had a lot of success with Zara denim and Pistola. A few notes on both…

• Zara: Sizing on denim is unpredictable, even between different washes of the same style. But, the price point for quality makes it worth the experimentation in my opinion.

• Pistola: Pistola fits me really well, although I have to hem almost everything (except for Eli Barrel which is now discontinued). It does run a bit large.

The mental gymnastics I’ve done to justify the price point on the DONNI taffeta trouser are impressive (as are the lengths I’ve gone to find sales, discounts, and second-hand options), but I do wear them a ton: with ballet flats to work, with sneakers to check on properties, with heels to a party (or, at least I plan to). That said, plenty of more affordable options exist, including the Reformation Olina Cropped Pant, the Anthropologie Maeve Taffeta Tapered Pant, and the Chan Luu Techno Taffeta Barrel Pant.

I feel like there’s so much pressure to buy new pieces for your wardrobe with the changing seasons, so it’s worth noting that I’m wearing pieces that I wear year-round (like the Dôen Sebastian Skirt and DONNI Pop Cargo Trouser); although my coastal climate allows for lightweight fabrics. TOPS

I continue to rely on my rotation of basics throughout (somewhat) cooler months, although it’s a relief and delight to introduce a layer (and a sleeve) without threat of sweating through clothes by 9:00AM. The sweaters I’ve been wearing over my shoulders are now going on my body. With the exception of a few great second-hand scores, I’m updating sweaters that are pilled beyond recovery with under $50 options I can wear the hell out of — you know, let dogs jump on, wash and dry (hey, we’re lucky the laundry gets done). Gap is a go-to for sweaters and I typically order a size up or order from the men’s section as I like an oversized fit to wear with leggings (these are my current favorite — under $50!).

Pops of color come in the form of my favorites, which happen to be this season’s darling hues: cherry red and chartreuse. But go ahead and wear whatever makes your little heart sing — if it’s royal purple, great. If you’re gravitating towards purple because everyone else is, just imagine what it’ll feel like next fall puzzling over a purple sweater you never actually liked when everyone’s moved on to mustard seed or turquoise.

LAYERS

I am joyfully unversed in winter-wear. Growing up, we got “snow days” for 30-degree mornings that eased into 50-degree sunny days. And while North Florida gets colder than most anticipate, coats are more of an accessory than a necessity. So, this is your fair warning to head elsewhere for practical insights on winter outerwear and layering. That said, it’s a quick way to dress up an otherwise low-effort outfit. And, if you do happen to be in warm-weather markets in the spring, it’s a great place to pick up fabulous coats on fabulous sale (a few good ones here).

SHOES

Fall and winter footwear is a simple rotation of mule, dress flat, sneaker, and boot. I’m excited to try my go-to summer brand, TKEEs, more seasonally-appropriate option and introduce a new weather-resistant boot (my Dr. Martens have served me well for years!) ahead of a few fun winter trips. To accessorize mules and loafers, I’ll experiment with socks, a habit my husband makes fun of me for, but I digress.

PARTING THOUGHTS

Realistically, our fall doesn’t exist and our “winter” is most of the country’s late spring and early fall. Blessedly temperate and, finally, an opportunity to wear things bought in heat-induced fits of madness as we daydream of cool weather — who in their right mind could justify another wool sweater when the dew point averages 75?

Suffice to say, I’m excited about the season of dressing. And that is, I suppose, how it should be. Regardless of how you think about or embrace trends and, certainly, whether you consider yourself a fashion girl or not.

What I’m [Still] Working On. The damn garden. But, I’m happy to report the rock pile is no longer (and before we received a note from the HOA!). Now, to add edging to keep the rocks where they’re supposed to be and stare at my seedlings. I experimented with starting a few green bean seeds inside, noticed they’d started to sprouting, and thought to myself: is this how parenthood feels? Editors Note: In between drafting this Note and hitting publish, I was bopping with my mom and found the most incredible dining set. It’s a bit provincial, patinated, and perfectly sized for area I never intended initially to cover with gravel. Funny how things just come together.

What I’m Prioritizing. Things I’d typically skip because they were “frivolous:” running on the beach (instead of straight out the door), stopping for an afternoon pastry; using the “fancy” dishes; lighting candles; flipping through magazines. With a bit more time on my hands than usual, I’ve realized that relegating these experiences was never actually about having enough time for them. Of course, it’s easier to expend resources (time, energy, a few extra bucks) on the ephemeral in times of abundance, but even when I did have extra time or energy I initially struggled to justify doing so. What’s the point? I wondered?

The joy and revitalization experienced along the way, I discovered as I broke through routines built by pragmatism.

What I’m Reading. Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox. It feels very important to let you know that I selected this book because it’s a cornerstone reference within 12-step recovery rather than let you assume I’m some lightweight theologian or, worse, an evangelist. Although, I suppose it’s a bit ironic I’d rather you know that I’m a recovering alcoholic than hardcore Christian. Anyway!

I was full of contempt prior to investigation, but craving a bit of ~spiritual growth~ I finally gave Fox’s work a real try. It’s an incredible read that’s shifted my perspective on Jesus’s teachings.

What I’m [Also] Reading. Substacks, obviously. Here’s a few articles that I enjoyed this week…

Records: My husband received a record player (with these speakers) for his birthday, so I picked up a few records (Elton John’s Caribou was the day’s score) for him when I was out antiquing. I’m positive anyone who actually had to use a record player thinks we’re insane, but vinyl does sound different and incorporating analogue elements into an increasingly AI world feels good. All in, under $50.

Clothes & Accessories: I love a deal and I love the hunt. So, I’m always toggling between Poshmark and TheRealReal. Typically know exactly what I'm looking for — whether it’s Outdoor Voices 5” Warmup Short [find on Poshmark here] or Donni anything — so I stay very focused. But, I also have saved searches on TheRealReal, which include High Sport Kick Flare Pant (Donni’s The Rib Kick Flare pant is a great dupe, btw), Hervè Chappel Bags, Leset Pants, Toteme Coats, Donni (duh), and Savette Bags.

I’ve been thinking about “In-Between Outfits.” Some use the term to describe what they’re wearing between Outfits (capital-O ‘fits, the ones with a place to be and a small photoshoot on the way). Others use it as shorthand for what they’re wearing for life’s in-between moments: school pick-ups, errands, casual meals. Others still, as Leandra Medine Cohen points out in her aptly titled piece “In-Between Dressing,” that “In-Between” dressing has become a veritable trend.

At first I was flummoxed and even a bit concerned. As I looked at my closet and saw nothing but “in-between” pieces I wondered if I was building my wardrobe incorrectly. Basics are my bread and butter: white tees, great jeans, pieces that work season after season in a million different ways.

On a cultural note, I also wondered: are we judging our lives by the outfits they call for? Are we deeming the day-to-day less valuable than the “occasions?” Additionally, to what extent do we realize how fashion influencing is, well, influencing our value systems around how we dress for daily life — and, by extension, spend our money, view ourselves, view others, and, most importantly, view the activities that comprise our day-to-day?

Then, of course, I realized that, regardless of how the term is being interpreted, it’s important creators are sharing their “in-between” outfits. I particularly like what Gabi Gofris has to say on the subject…

“You’ll see a lot of repeating, but I think that’s good,” strikes a chord. Why do we feel the urge to qualify “in-between” outfits and justify their lack of novelty (as compared to other outfits or content)?

Repeating, re-wearing, and reworking pieces is practical, financially responsible, and therefor (do we still hate this word?) chic. “In-between” dressing is also realistic for the vast majority of people — you know, the ones who aren’t being gifted thousands in clothes + accessories and live comfortably in the “in between.”

But, I don’t want to use that term. “In-between” feels a bit… diminishing. As if what we put on our bodies for the moments outside of special occasions are somehow secondary. Perhaps (probably) I’m reading too much into this very niche subject, but I believe cultural values can change with the most infinitesimal shifts in perspective (or, in this case, semantics).

Because, ultimately, I believe we should want to repeat the majority of what we do and wear everyday. That, surely, would be a beautiful life.

What I’m [Still] Working On. The rock project. I’ve exhausted Pinterest and have turned to the teetering piles of design books scattered throughout our house that I always knew would come in handy. In spare minutes I’ve been referencing books like The Art of Outdoor Living, Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon, The Landscape of Home: In the Country, By the Sea, In the City. The projects featured within those pages may be a bit beyond my scope (both in capability and budget) but it’s refreshing to see new images that, in turn, spark new ideas.

What I’m [Now Also] Working On. While that bigger project is pending, I’m tackling the small stuff. You know, the really small stuff, the stuff that seems so inconsequential that it gets pushed to the bottom of your list (or never even makes it on the list) for weeks that turn into months so that one day, a year later, you wake up and realize you still haven’t changed the smoke alarm batteries or cancelled your Amazon Prime Peacock subscription. Please tell me I’m not the only one!

This week I sat down and created a list of all the little stuff I’ve been meaning to do but have de-prioritized because, well, other things in life were simply more interesting or more urgent. The list looks something like this:

1. Order AA batteries.

2. Package clothes for TheRealReal.

3. Print out shipping label + request UPS pickup for TheRealReal.

4. Change out air filters.

5. Take clothing donations to Caring & Sharing.

6. Hang outdoor hooks.

7. Clean out shoe basket.

8. Ad infinitum…

What I’m Practicing. Just being. It does not come naturally to me. Sitting still makes me anxious, as does setting aside time for anything that can’t be categorized as work or work-adjacent. And while this confession could turn into quite the discourse on our culture and what we value, I’ll stay in my lane and focus on what I can control. Needless to say, the “I Am” statements I discussed last week reflect a [rather apprehensive] desire to experience something different. That is, to say, to experience life, in its fullest, not at its most productive. A balance, to be sure, especially as I work on above projects and lists, but so far it looks like putting down the shovel (literally) and hanging on the porch; crossing off one (not all) of the items on the list and going for a walk with a new friend; and spending evenings at the beach with my family. It also looks like creating another list — a list of things I de-prioritize because they’re not “productive.”

What I’m Practicing. Recently, I had a long conversation with my dear friend about a Substack article she wrote. Our conversation meandered from the power of prayer to the kind of lives we want to lead (versus the lives we once thought we wanted), spirituality versus religion to internal vs. external fulfillment. Since that conversation, I’ve been implementing “I Am” statements into my morning journaling practice to test some of the concepts we discussed. The practice is as simple and straightforward as it sounds. I take a pen, a journal, and a vision for my future, then put it to paper. I’ve since filled pages with statements like: I am healthy and kind to my body. I am a voracious reader. I am financially secure and wise. I am diligent and detail-oriented. I am graceful during learning opportunities.

And in between those morning and nightly entries, a shift has taken place. I wouldn’t say that I believe all of those things (yet), but I am treating myself as if I am all of those things. The practice has given me a tighter focus and the ability to maintain a higher standard despite creeping doubt, fear, or exhaustion. The “I Am” statements have also helped me filter through what is authentic to me versus what society or other external pressures may expect or encourage.

It’s worth noting that I have to put pen to paper to glean the full effect of “I Am” statements. Typing just doesn’t do the trick, but I’ve always found this to be true of journaling.

What I’m Reading. Just finished [devoured, actually] A Land Remembered, a stunning multi-generational novel that captures approximately 100 years of Florida history through the lens of the fictional MacIvey family. As a Floridian, the novel broadened my appreciation for Florida’s rich history and even richer biodiversity. Yet, the novel also left me with a profound sense of sadness for a land that now only exists in disjointed, disconnected bits and pieces of state parks and forests. A heavy read? Yes. Impossible to put down? Also yes.

I needed something a little lighter after such a heavy (albeit incredible) hitter. Finishing up Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara, former General Manager at Eleven Madison Park. The book has such utility beyond the F&B and hospitality industries, and I’ve learned a lot about management and client relationships.

What’s Inspiring Me. Zara’s Pre-Fall Campaign really inspired me with its punchy primary colors and patterns. Bright blue, classic stripes, cheery red, and even a sprinkling of bright green. To me, the hero pieces felt like an elegant extension of an Americana summer, perfect for pairing with key summer purchases for an easy transition into a new season. Which, let’s face it, is how dressing should be. It’s not normal to purchase a whole new wardrobe each season.

What I’m Working On. After a summer of overcommitting, I’m enjoying the slower pace. Actually, I’m not. It’s driving me nuts. So nuts, in fact, I ordered 12,000 pounds of pebbles to put in our garden. To be clear, our garden doesn’t need 12,000 pounds of pebbles. So now, I am having a meltdown have a project! To keep me motivated, I’m ordering seeds for Fall (Zone 9B for inquiring minds) and browsing Garden Heir’s Labor Day Sale.

What I’m Buying. In addition to a lifetime supply of Bahama rock? Quite a few items from Poshmark. My go-to biker short (Outdoor Voice’s 5” Warm-Up Short — on sale in gray here!) has been sold out in black, so I ordered a few pairs on Poshmark. 30A is no longer the well-kept secret of my early childhood. It’s no longer a poorly kept secret. But much of its heart and soul remain: a slow little beach town that loves its locals and its Caribbean-quality ocean.

I could write for days and share dozens of photos, but I finally stopped myself and hit publish long before I was ready. So, please keep checking back for updates to this local-loving guide.

WHEN to VISIT //

While our little scenic highway is increasingly a year-round destination, it’s busiest during Spring Break (March 1 through mid-April, depending on the year), Memorial Day through Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas through New Year’s.

Spring // March - Memorial Day // If your dates are flexible, avoid Spring Break unless can stay for an extended period (two weeks or more), since both weather and crowds can be unpredictable. The weather improves as spring wears on, making April popular for weddings and bachelorettes. For the best balance of weather and thinner crowds, aim for May before Memorial Day.

Summer // Memorial Day - Labor Day // Quintessential time to visit 30A. Fourth of July is the busiest week, but also one of the most special. Book accommodations well in advance to secure the best rental selection and rates.
Local Tip: As kids start school, 30A slows down. While it’s peak heat and humidity, mid-to-late August (pre-Labor Day) is a good time to visit.

Fall // September - November // Admittedly, September is better classified as late summer. However, once October rolls around… It’s one of the most magical times of the year. Expect sunny days in the 70s, plus a full lineup of festivals. View the South Walton Events Calendar here…

Winter // Thanksgiving - February // Some days it’s 70 and sunny, some days it’s freezing. That’s Florida. But there’s always a white Christmas if you wander down to the beach. Speaking of, December is buzzing for the holidays, but January and February are a bit quieter save for 30A Songwriters Fest.

WHERE to STAY

For the ideal 30A experience, I recommend Rosemary, Alys (pronounced “Alice”), Seaside, or Grayton. Each has a distinct personality and — with the exception of Grayton, which, unlike the others, is a more organic neighborhood than planned community — offers the strongest walkability, amenities, and deeded beach access.

Each piece has been lovingly hand-selected by owner and longtime local, Marilyn, to add character and story to your home. With everything from $1,000+ coral pieces to bamboo place settings, there’s something for everyone. Pish Posh Patchoulis // Rosemary Beach // Locally Owned // A 30A staple since 1992. Stock up on everything from Ilia to Supergoop, and, of course, Patchouli’s in-house, locally-made products. A visit to their custom scent bar is a rite of passage.

Summer of Spivey // Grayton Beach // Locally Owned // Locally-owned and designed swimwear in the cutest little Grayton Beach shop. Pop in for swimmies and saltwater staples like sunscreen and coverups.

Sundog Books // Seaside // Locally Owned // Sundog holds so many special memories for me and I love that it’s largely remained the same for the decades it’s been open. I head straight for their Staff Picks section (walk in, turn right, and find it between contemporary fiction and mystery), then head to the back left corner for coffee table books. Don’t forget to pop upstairs to browse the record store.

Raw & Juicy // Alys Beach & Grayton Locations // Locally Owned // Very healthy, very good. The Alys and Grayton locations are quite different, but both deliver on the promise of garden-led fare. While popular among visitors, Raw & Juicy is also a local favorite. From the Thursday Farmers Market, featuring local makers and growers, to the R&J Wellness Collective and seasonal Sourdough Pizza Nights, Raw & Juicy is deeply rooted in the community.

Black Bear // Grayton & Seaside Locations // Locally Owned // The best breads and pastries on 30A. If I’m feeling indulgent, I get an almond croissant and an iced Golden Goddess. And a sugar cookie (or two, for luck).

Donut Hole // Destin, Santa Rosa Beach, Inlet Beach Locations // Locally Owned // Order a dozen and make sure at least one is a blueberry cake donut. Or, sit down for breakfast (served all day) before you walk away with sweets for the week.

Blue Mountain Beach Bakery // Blue Mountain Beach // Locally Owned // Locals will remember when it was La Loba and had to-die-for granola. Their pastries are still to-die-for, and their gluten-free options are hard to beat. A go-to for lunch as well.

George’s // Alys Beach // A ladies-who-lunch kind of place. Sit outside, order a Mock Lemonade Thyme, and spend too long deliberating between the “Behave” and “Misbehave” sections of the menu.

Summer Kitchen // Rosemary Beach // Locally Owned // A longtime favorite that’s been in Rosemary since the beginning. Order the No. 12 and a side of fries.

Modica Market // Seaside // Locally Owned // I’ll skip the lines at the airstreams and head for Modica to grab goodies from their prepared food section or assemble an on-the-fly cheese board for a picnic on the green.

Seagrove Village Market Café // Seagrove // Locally Owned // Deep fried since 1949. While there’s a new location in Watersound Origins, I prefer the original in Seagrove. And although it’s been updated — spiffed up to keep pace with the town’s growth — the shrimp basket and sweet tea are just as I remember.

Bud & Alleys // Seaside // Locally-Owned // A Seaside staple and my top recommendation for, well, literal seaside dining. Fun facts: it was the first restaurant (and bar) to open in Seaside, and it was named for a dog (Bud) and cat (Alley).

Café 30A // Seagrove // Consistent fine dining since 1995. Known for its longtime staff and martini happy hours. Order the crab cakes.

O-Ku // Alys Beach // Not locally owned, but a very welcome addition to the culinary scene nonetheless.

Pizza by the Sea // Miramar, Gulf Place, WaterColor, Seacrest // Locally-Owned // Best pizza for casual nights in. Go full beach bum and take it to the beach.

Raw & Juicy Pizza Night // (Seasonal; Thursdays & Fridays) // Grayton Location Only // For authentic sourdough pizza, this is it. Look no further.

Raw & Juicy Chef Dinners // (Seasonal; Friday - Sunday) // Alys Location Only // Garden-led fare from Chef Phil McDonald (formerly of Black Bear). Delicious, utterly local, and one of the few places you can make a reservation.

The Bay // Santa Rosa Beach // Locally Owned // A casual spot on the, you guessed it, Choctawhatchee Bay. Classic Southern Gulf Coast menu (crab cakes, fish sandwich, burger, etc.) with the welcome addition of sushi. If The Bay is too busy, we walk across the street to one of Jim Shirley’s other restaurants, North Beach Social (essentially a more laid-back version of The Bay, sans-sushi) or Farm & Fire (pizza and sushi).

Sugar Shak // Rosemary Beach // The way we begged to go to Sugar Shak when we were little. Multiple times a day… Simply put, it’s a must-visit for kids (or kids at heart).

Frost Bites // Seaside // Locally Owned // Another 30A icon. Summer in a Styrofoam cup.

Dawson’s // Seaside // Locally Owned // For when shaved ice doesn’t hit the spot (or when the line is a little too long): Dawson’s soft serve.

WHAT to DO

CC.BOONE Beach Bonfire // Locally-Owned // A beach bonfire is a really special way to kick off your trip, and CC.BOONE hosts the most elegant beach bonfire in town. Complete the experience with batched cocktails, charcuterie boards, s’mores, or all of the above.

Tennis at Rosemary Beach Racquet Club // A biased recommendation! Not only did I grow up at these courts and meet my husband here circa-2005, but said husband has worked here as a pro for years. I suppose that also makes this recommendation very well-informed. Open to the public (no membership or Rosemary stay required) anyone can enjoy their clinics, lessons, or courts — just be sure to book ahead during high season! Ask for Christian and tell RBRC Kenz sent you ;)

PCB Water Sports Dolphin or Sunset Tour // Locally-Owned // The beach is amazing, but being on the water is better. Captain Cameron and his team are fabulous and will treat you to the best time on the water out of Panama City. See what I mean here.

Walk Grayton Beach State Park // 30A is surrounded by thousands of acres of state forest and park. While Grayton Beach State Park is an easy favorite for its beach access, it also has incredible trails. Take a morning to explore.

TRAVEL NOTES //

Beach Access // South Walton’s famous beaches are a mix of private, public, and state parks. To ensure easy, unfettered access, I recommend renting in Rosemary, Alys, Watersound, and Seaside. However, if you’d prefer to stay outside of one of these communities, I recommend opting for a gulf-front rental (many include deeded beachfront), triple checking with your host about the community’s beach setup, and referencing nearby public and/or state park beaches. Golf Carts & LSV // A touchy topic amongst locals. If you do choose to rent one, note that Walton County Sheriff’s Department strictly enforces seatbelt and occupancy laws, as well as the roads on which golf carts and LSVs are allowed to operate. Rosemary, Alys, Kaiya, and Seaside also prohibit them within their communities. Don’t forget to turn your blinkers off and keep an eye on the number of cars behind you.

Beach Safety //

• Clean, Dark, Flat // Please help us keep our beaches a safe place for sea turtles to nest by removing all of your belongings, throwing away your trash, and filling in any holes you dig during your beach day!

• Flag System // Please keep yourself, others, and our lifeguards safe by checking the beach flags and knowing your limits. A double red flag means the water is closed and you will be ticketed for entering the water. This is not to ruin your vacation, but to keep you and first responders safe!

Summer styling in the Florida heat and humidity takes a bit of strategy. Jeans are packed away with all memories of cooler weather; bathing suits and the thinnest of layers will rule (in between athleisure, obviously). Here’s what I’m planning to put into [heavy] rotation.

Leather Handwoven Tote // I’ve wanted a Dragon Diffusion bag for years, but couldn’t justify the price. This is the best dupe and I’ve gotten so many compliments. I want one in every color and size!

Salty Face Tanning Moisturizer // Honestly, there’s no better summer accessory than a tan — even if it’s a fake one. I put Salty Face’s Tanning Moisturizer on every night (it takes a while to activate) for a sun-kissed glow that looks like I’m at the beach way more than I actually am.

SATIN BRAIDED PEARL NECKLACE // Love a baroque pearl necklace! And I think the satin braid keeps it the right amount of casual summer calls for.

Reformation Pina Flat Sandal // For a pop of color. The mesh flats are growing on me, but I’m still not all the way on board.

Funny, the things we inherit from our parents. Some are obvious: noses, eye color. Others are invisible yet so innate they can only be explained by a shared sequence of genes. It’s in the shape of my legs and my love of crystalline blue water that I know I am my mother’s child. Near or in it, we are both most at peace.

So, no discussion needed when she suggested Grand Cayman as the destination for our annual girls’ trip. My mother and the island had history. In a different lifetime, she’d frequented Grand Cayman. Over forty years later, she could return to the island on her own terms with her daughter and a dear friend.

We call this annual girls’ trip “Girl Summer Camp.” It’s a time to rest, restore, reconnect, and, by the end, remember — and yearn for — that which we love about our homes. It’s a few days of being missed by dependents (husbands, animals, and children); of walking everywhere and going to bed early; of sharing and listening. And it’s something I highly recommend and deeply treasure. So much so, apparently, that I took about 12 photos the entire time I was there. Oh well!

WHEN to GO //

The first week of May was perfection, but this is coming from a Florida girl to whom humidity is a delight. In fact, it was more humid back home than it was in Grand Cayman. So plan according to your heat and humidity tolerance!

HOW to GET THERE //

Fly to Owens Roberts International Airport (GCM), which is the most modern Caribbean airport (I’m sure you can understand why). Customs was air-conditioned, though slow due to the number of concurrent arrivals. We’d arranged for transportation ahead of time through the hotel, but a taxi would’ve been easy to secure.

When flying out, we were advised to allot two hours, but found that to be far more time than we needed. Duty-free is limited to one jewelry store, liquor, and perfume and, in my opinion, can be skipped.

WHERE to STAY //

We stayed at The Ritz Carlton, which, initially, was everything one might expect a Ritz-Carlton to be: expansive and well outfitted. A bit labyrinthine, the resort is best suited to travelers with no intention of leaving the property — which makes sense in more remote or unfamiliar destinations.

Unfortunately, we can’t speak much to the food and beverage program, as we opted for the Club Lounge experience, which — though touted as an elevated offering — felt very much like a downgrade. The Lounge was, at least, quieter than the rest of the hotel, which was hosting a succession of corporate retreats.

Overall, The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman felt stuck. Obvious attempts to keep pace with neighboring resorts had been made, but those efforts were undermined around nearly every corner. Take, for example, the Saint June poolside bar. Cloistered by tropical foliage and outfitted in country-club green upholstery, cabana stripes, and brass finials, it’s distinctly sexy. But turn around from the bar and you’ll find Croc-clad pool attendants serving frozen push pops from insulated lunch bags.

And the whole thing came crumbling down after one of our group was sidelined for 24 hours with gastrointestinal troubles. Undoubtedly that experience — and the likely origins of such troubles — colored our take on The Ritz Grand Cayman. But, I can’t help but think that — given The Ritz’s legendary Gold Standard discretionary $2,000 Guest Empowerment fund — we could’ve left a bit more… empowered. Rather, we were offered a bag of pretzels, one tour credit, and an interview with security.

Here’s where I’d stay instead…

PALM HEIGHTS // Cut off from the bustling Seven Mile Beach Road by a dense, towering wall of tropical foliage, Palm Heights is a masterclass in merging Slim Aarons nostalgia with modern sensibilities. The carefully manufactured machinations of a corporation like Marriott or Kimpton it is not. Rather, Palm Heights is the serendipitous Caribbean daydream of IYKYK creative director Gabriella Khalil where travertine, stacked 4x4 subway tiles, Willy Guhl, and all shades of sunshine yellow rule. Sure, it betrays some pretense — with all likelihood stay at Palm Heights because you want to be a part of that world — but every detail has been so meticulously considered that even a quick visit for dinner is transportive. On that note, Tillies is a can’t miss. Order the Fish Milanese. )

WHAT to DO //

STINGRAY CITY // Our tour was organized by the concierge at The Ritz with Red Sail Sports, which offered a fun, educational experience. In short, I highly recommend both Red Sail Sports and the Stingray Tour, which also includes snorkel and starfish experiences. Stingray City is certainly touristy — the Grand Cayman government estimates each stingray is worth upwards of $500,000 KYD given the amount of revenue the experience drives — but it’s well worth the relatively small crowd. I’ll get back to you on whether kissing a stingray actually gets you seven years of good luck.

WHERE to SHOP //

LABEL C // Interior Designer Cynthia Tranel’s boutique filled with an intentional selection of beautiful bedding, accessories, and art. Think: relaxed, effortless, and timeless. Here, I picked up a “silver” trays used at Tillies.

DOLORES // Located at Palm Heights. Worth a spin to see interesting pieces for home, closet, and apothecary.

KASSETTE // We didn’t make it here, but looks well worth the trip.

KIRK MARKET // Stock up on reef safe sunscreen and snacks, etc.

AMÉ // Located at Camana Bay, which is a nice stroll. Expect brands like Rails, Flamingo Estate, Farm Rio, Hunter Bell, and the like.

WHERE to EAT //

Were we to do our dining over again, here’s how we’d do it…

TILLIES // For a sunset dinner. Our dinner here was incredible. The rolls are to die for and the Fish Milanese was unreal. I would pass on their Birthday Sundae (I was imagining birthday cake-flavored whereas it was vanilla soft serve and chocolate gelato with cake bits) and opt for the Miso Sundae or Toasted Coconut Tres Leches.

PARADISE PIZZA // For a casual dinner or dining in.

MRS. PIPER’S KITCHEN & GARDEN // We ate here for lunch and it was lovely! Very cute.

HAPPY DAYS COFFEE // A morning walk to Happy Days for coffee.

TAIKUN // At The Ritz for sushi.

TRAVEL NOTES //

Traveling to Grand Cayman is very straightforward. The island felt incredibly safe, connected, and developed. In fact, I felt like I was in South Florida rather than a foreign country.

Quoted in KYD // Most items at resorts — from food to products — are quoted in KYD and charged in USD. The USD is weaker compared to the Cayman Dollar. At time of publishing, it was $1.25 USD to $1.00 KYD.

WHAT to PACK //

As with most places, Grand Cayman is what you make it. We made it a restorative, restful experience, so no “going out tops” for us. That said, Grand Cayman offered ample opportunities to dress up should you choose. And for those who are curious, it was giving Miami-light rather than Palm Beach or Harbour Island. I wore resort and summer staples, which you can find here.

Like many travel fixations, my interest in Harbour Island began in photographs: first stirred by Slim Aarons’ sun-drenched scenes of the Seventies, later cultivated by the enduring (and enterprising) island aesthetics of India Hicks and Amanda Lindroth. For years, Harbour Island existed in that languid mythology — pink sand, wicker, and palms — until a dear friend called with plans for a spontaneous visit in a few days’ time.

For a someone who’s long considered themselves a homebody, it seemed as mad to say no as to go. So, off we went…

WHEN to GO // Shoulder Season // Mid-April through May and October through early November offer lower rates, quieter beaches, and ideal temps. While we technically visited during high-season (mid-December through April), our midweek visit in February felt perfect: no crowds, warm daytime weather… Although for Florida girls, the water and evenings were a bit chilly.

HOW to GET THERE // Living several hours’ drive from major travel hubs, I’m used to long travel days, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover how easy it is to get to the Bahamas. Our 6:00 AM flight was worth the early wake-up call: by 11:00 AM, we were sitting on the hotel veranda, mocktail in hand.

Editor’s Note: We did not book any private transportation in advance and had no trouble or hiccups in getting to Harbour Island. My impression is that booking ahead would be more stressful.

• Fly into North Eleuthera (ELH) via Miami with American Airlines, via Atlanta with Delta, or via Fort Lauderdale with Silver Airways. As of 2026, customs is in a one-room building and your proximity to the front of the plane will determine how quickly pass through.

• From ELH take a 5-minute taxi to the Port (about $7 per person).

• From the Port take a 7-minute water taxi to the Government Docks (about $5 per person)

• Take a taxi from the Government Docks to your hotel or resort ($7+, depends on where you’re staying).

• On our flight out, we left two hours early (more than enough time) which meant we got seats in the very limited ELH departures “lounge” (i.e. a two-room building packed with chairs but mercifully air-conditioned).

WHERE to STAY // Ocean View Club // Tucked in above the island’s characteristic pink sands, Ocean View Club is an eclectic, salt-worn hotel free of the pretense of neighboring resorts. It’s the sort of place that insists upon bare feet, doors thrown wide open, and keeping track of your own bar tab.

Defined by an amusing combination of thoughtful touches and a benign indifference to mainland comforts Ocean View Club — in its own words — promises nothing. This is not the latest private equity acquisition carefully engineered to simulate rustic charm until the precise moment you need another cocktail. Here, you get your own drinks.

The pleasures here are specific. Malin + Goetz toiletries and Supergoop! sunscreen by the gallon. Stacks of dogeared beach reads and backgammon. Exquisite farm fresh fare. Other comforts arrive — or don’t — in their own time. The air is thick, the staff unhurried. The sound of waves a lull that makes time move in unbelievable slow, yet wonderfully welcome pace.

In other words, Ocean View Club is for the traveler who likes to linger: over lunch, for a chat with Ms. Mae, and in the rhythms of Briland life.

WHAT to DO // Besides lay around on the beach, as you’re meant to? We enjoyed exploring neighboring resorts and Dunmore Town, stocking up on steps and inspiration.

Our days were unhurried, spent in leisurely pursuit of sun and snacks. Dinners were the dénouement. Speaking of which, I highly recommend hiring a boat to Ocean View Club’s sister property, The Other Side, for dinner and drinks.

If you’re into design, The Dunmore, designed by Amanda Lindroth, is worth a visit, as is the boutique.

TRAVEL NOTES //

Bring Cash // I recommend bringing small notes ($1s, $5s, $10s) for taxis and tips—for example, the gentlemen who load and unload bags from the water taxis.

Bring a Water Bottle // Or stock up at Pigly Wigly (yes, that’s how they spell it). Nothing — including water — is cheap on Harbour Island. Expect to pay around $14 for a bottle at restaurants. And no, the tap water is not recommended.

Make Reservations // Reservations are king on Harbour Island, even during shoulder season. When it comes to dinner, don’t expect to pop in or change an existing reservation.

WHAT to PACK // From the interiors to the sartorial selections of fellow sun-seekers, Harbour Island was a pastel and shell-encrusted fever dream. Even I — a devout believer in the capsule wardrobe — left the island inspired and eager to branch out into (gasp!) statement pieces. The fashion was, in the simplest terms, fun. And while I felt little pressure to dress up — a pareo, bathing suit, and sandals sufficed — there was ample opportunity to partake in the panache of resort wear, from breakfast to dinner, should the mood strike.

1. DIAMOND BRAIDED JUTE RUG // Great for high traffic areas or boys’ rooms (i.e. it appears like it won’t show stains in the same way a lighter rug would).

2. GINGHAM TRENCH COAT // Gingham + Trench Coat = Me, in a chokehold.

3. ELENA DRESS // If No. 7 is a little too boring for you.

4. CLASSIC SPRAY SPF 50 // The smell is compelling enough for reapplication. Transportive, so that I feel like I’m on vacation, even if I’m just working in my backyard.

5. TORTOISE SHELL BAMBOO GREEK KEY MIRROR // The famous Ashley Kane mirror.

6. THE CARMEN CARDIGAN // Throw over your shoulders all spring and summer.

I say attempted because I developed a respiratory infection from the glue I was using and couldn’t finish — even using a (pause here for laughs) respirator. 2. EYELET BANDANA SCARF // Skipping straight over the product styling on this (I fear I’d be a little too convincing as a milkmaid) I still can’t pass on the eyelet. Tie around your neck instead.

3. KYOTO PANT // These pull double duty quite naturally: pack them as a swimsuit cover up and, when you’re back home, wear them with a white tee (and the Taylor Cardigan over your shoulder) on weekends.

4. LINEN SET // A Top & Skort too cute to pass up. Perfect for spring (break) and summer travels.

5. TAYLOR CARDIGAN in COTTON CASHMERE // A hero item in my closet. I wear it at least twice a week, every week: over an exercise dress (the original, duh), over my shoulders with jeans, or with a midi skirt.

6. THE RUSH HOUSE ORIGINAL RUG // I write about this rug a lot — almost as much as you see it used across interiors (both high and low). It’s natural, beautiful, handmade, and as such, very well-priced. But what tips me over the edge is that its construction lends itself to easy customization and, more importantly, pets.
