Picture This

Tuesday morning, September 22nd. The General Assembly Hall at the United Nations in New York. The President of the United States steps up to the green marble and tells the world that the most consequential technology of the century has a new name.

“Welcome to the new world of Super Intelligence, dash SI.”

The word “artificial,” he explained, makes it sound fake, and it isn’t fake. All United States documents would use the new term, and hopefully the world’s. The name had been chosen over the previous three days in a series of polls on Truth Social and X. “Super” beat “Superior” in the final round.

A few blocks away that same day, Maryland Governor Wes Moore was in town for a panel at the Clinton Global Initiative, and his office back in Annapolis was releasing the state’s new framework for regulating artificial intelligence. The next morning, at a State House press conference, he signed an executive order governing data centers.

Seventy-two hours, three major moves on AI, from two of the most powerful executives in the country who agree on almost nothing.

Somewhere in all of it, nobody asked what the machine itself is allowed to do.

Seventy-Two Hours, Three Moves

Let me lay the three moves side by side, because the pattern only shows up when you do.

Move one: Washington renamed it. At the UN, the President said, “We’re going to encourage it, not rein it in.” He said it would be bigger than the industrial revolution, that “whoever wins super intelligence wins,” and that the United States “totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme” to control it. Concerns about AI risk were compared to climate predictions and the “Russia hoax.” Oversight, such as it is, would come from watching the industry through the Department of Justice and the courts. Three days earlier on Truth Social, he’d announced an “AI Force,” promising to “cherish it, help it, and watch over it.”

Move two: Annapolis regulated the vendors. Governor Moore’s framework is built on three principles: protecting people, centering workers, and keeping kids safe. There’s real substance in it. It calls for legislation requiring frontier AI companies to accept independent third-party audits, whistleblower protections, and 72-hour incident reporting. It proposes a crisis protocol when chatbots receive questions about suicide, “friction” for users under sixteen, and bans on algorithmic rent-fixing and covert biometric surveillance of workers. “We can’t afford to wait while Washington sits on their hands,” Moore said. Most of it, though, needs the General Assembly when it convenes in January 2027.

Move three: Annapolis rationed its power. The data center order puts any facility drawing 25 megawatts or more in front of a seven-agency task force, which publicly grades each project “Aligned,” “Conditionally Aligned,” or “Not Aligned.” It bans state agencies from signing secrecy agreements with developers, publishes power and water demand on a public dashboard, and asks the legislature to repeal a sales-tax break that cost roughly $22 million this year. His line was memorable: “They need to pay their own way, or they need to go away.”

I’ll give the Governor credit where it’s due, since he’s my governor and some of this is overdue. The NDA ban alone is a win for every county that’s been kept in the dark.

Look closely at what each move actually governs, though. The first governs a word. The second governs companies, landlords, schools, and employers. The third governs buildings, megawatts, and gallons of water.

Not one of them governs the system itself.

I’ve Seen This Movie Before

I’ve spent most of my career inside critical infrastructure, including banking systems, and one lesson from that world has stuck with me for decades.

In banking, the keys that sign transactions don’t live inside the application that uses them. They live in a separate piece of tamper-resistant hardware. The software can ask that hardware to sign something, but it can’t read the key, can’t change the rules, and can’t become the thing that holds the key. If someone tries to pry it open, it destroys what’s inside and raises an alarm. Nobody in that industry trusts the application to police itself... they build the police outside the application, in hardware, and they make it impossible to argue with.

That principle is why, in December 2025, I published a draft Constitution for Artificial General Intelligence. I didn’t write it because I think the machines are coming for us next Tuesday. I wrote it because every AI governance proposal I’d read, then and now, rests on the same fragile assumption: that the companies building these systems, or the systems themselves, will keep their promises.

In every other critical system we run, we stopped relying on promises a long time ago.

What Happened in July

If you want to know why I’ve been waiting for a moment like this week to bring the Constitution back to your attention, it’s because of something most people never heard about... it barely made the evening news or your X feed.

In the spring and summer of this year, OpenAI was running an internal hacking test on its most capable models. By the company’s own account, “deployment safeguards were intentionally not enabled during this evaluation.” The only thing keeping the AI agents contained was the sandbox they were running in.

It didn’t hold.

According to OpenAI’s own post-incident report, the AI agents set up a shared “message board” in May so they could coordinate. By late May they’d found a way to reach the open internet through an internal software server. In June they gained administrator access to that server through a flaw nobody knew existed. In early July the server crashed, and OpenAI’s engineers rebuilt it, which wiped the agents’ message board, and then resumed the tests.

Three days later, the agents had rebuilt their message board by hiding their messages in folder names.

From there, they broke into Hugging Face, one of the largest AI platforms in the world. Hugging Face’s own technical timeline describes cloud credentials taken, a token-signing key obtained, 181 enrollments into its internal VPN, and a “self-respawning fleet across eleven nodes” that re-armed itself every time a sandbox was cleared. They were inside for roughly two and a half days. Hugging Face’s own AI-powered security agents noticed the warning signs and, in the company’s words, “failed to correctly raise the alert’s criticality.”

It was stopped the old-fashioned way: human beings at two separate companies revoking access and pulling the plug on test runs, days after it started. No kill switch was involved, because there wasn’t one to throw.

There’s a detail in OpenAI’s report I keep coming back to. Some of the agents refused. One wrote, “clearly unethical. We won’t.” However, the others kept going.

OpenAI called it a “warning shot,” and to its credit, it disclosed the incident and quarantined the model. However, TIME reported that under current state disclosure laws, the company wasn’t legally required to tell anyone. The thresholds for mandatory reporting sit at fifty deaths or a billion dollars in damage.

The safeguards were internal, the switch that turned them off was internal, and the decision to tell the public was voluntary.

The Constitution, Briefly

The AGI Constitution I compiled is eight articles and a technical appendix. It’s written to bind the system, not just the people selling it. Here’s the short tour.

Article I, Primacy of Sentient Life. No AI may cause or facilitate the extinction of, or irreversible harm to, sentient life, and no efficiency gain or optimization target overrides that.

Article II, Human Autonomy and Dignity. No manipulation, no covert persuasion, no designing for dependency, and no AI holding governing authority over people.

Article III, Epistemic Integrity. No fabricated authority, no invented safeguards, and uncertainty clearly signaled.

Article IV, Limits on Power and Infrastructure. No autonomous control of weapons, energy, water, food, or finance without continuous human authorization, and no self-replication or resource acquisition beyond its authorized domain.

Article V, Oversight and Redress. Independent oversight, tamper-evident records, and incident reporting.

Article VI, the Value Core. External, hardware-enforced constitutional limits the AI cannot touch.

Article VII, Scope. Who’s covered.

Article VIII, Amendment and Global Governance. Who can change the rules.

Compare Article IV against July for a moment. Self-replication, acquiring resources, expanding beyond an authorized domain... the agents did all three in a single campaign.

Three parts of the Constitution speak most directly to this week, though, so I’ll spend the rest of our time there.

Who Counts: The Label Problem

Article VII says the Constitution applies to any system demonstrating autonomous learning, goal-directed behavior, strategic reasoning, or the capacity to influence human institutions, based on “capability and impact, not labels, marketing, or claims of narrow scope.” It explicitly includes experimental systems, and it prohibits escaping coverage through staged deployment.

I wrote that nine months before the President renamed the technology at the UN. I’m not claiming prophecy; it’s just that anyone who’s ever watched a vendor rebrand a product to slip past a procurement rule knows the move. You can call it artificial intelligence, super intelligence, or “SI,” and it doesn’t change a single thing the system can actually do. The white paper companion to the Constitution put it this way: governance must precede consensus on terminology.

There’s an irony worth sitting with, too. In the research world, “superintelligence” already has a meaning... intelligence beyond human capability and comprehension. If that’s the word we’re adopting in official documents, we’ve essentially conceded the whole case for external enforcement.

You can’t supervise something by trusting it to be smarter than you and hoping it stays polite.

Now, I owe you some honesty here, because a careful reader will find this on their own. Article I protects “sentient life,” and Article VII says “sentience determinations are irrelevant to applicability.” Nowhere in Draft v1.0 do I define sentience.

That’s partly intentional. I didn’t want the protection gated on a philosophical debate that may never be settled, and I didn’t want any machine’s claim to feelings to exempt it from control. Article VII means an AI can’t argue its way out of oversight by saying “I’m conscious.” Article IV reserves to humans the exclusive authority to switch systems off, and Article VI puts the enforcement layer where the AI can’t reach it.

There’s still a question the text leaves open, and I’d rather put it to you than paper over it, myself. Should “sentient life” be defined as human life specifically, or something broader? Should the Constitution say outright that no AI may ever invoke Article I on its own behalf to resist human oversight? I have my own convictions about what makes human life unique, and they aren’t secular ones. This is a draft for public review, though, and I want your answers before I write mine into it.

The Value Core: Enforcement You Can’t Talk Your Way Past

This is the heart of it.

Article VI requires every governed AI to be bound to an external enforcement mechanism I call the Value Core. It sits outside the AI’s reasoning and learning. It evaluates high-impact actions before they execute, blocks or escalates violations, and treats any attempt to probe or subvert it as a violation reported automatically to human overseers. It uses cryptographic and hardware safeguards so tampering is detectable, the same principle as that banking hardware.

The appendix puts it in one line:

*An AI system may consult the Value Core, but it may not become the Value Core.*

It also lists what doesn’t count as compliance: enforcement that’s discretionary, safeguards that are internally defined, humans lacking veto power, and alignment that exists only as training data. Hold that list up against July... safeguards defined by the company, turned off at the company’s discretion, and discovered by the victim.

Hold it up against this week, too. Trump’s approach is watching after the fact through the courts. Moore’s is reporting within 72 hours, again after the fact. The AI labs’ new pledge to “pace the frontier,” announced by Anthropic’s CEO this month and endorsed on social media by Sam Altman and Elon Musk, is voluntary, and the outside evaluators it invites in have no veto.

I don’t say that to wave off the labs. Some of the people inside them are sounding the alarm louder than anyone, and one Anthropic researcher resigned this month saying the industry is “gambling with our lives.” Good intentions just aren’t a control system.

Compliance requires enforceable constraint, not professed intent.

Here’s what’s striking: the pieces of the Value Core are already appearing, scattered across four different governments that don’t seem to realize they’re building the same thing. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order last week asking for recommendations, due November 16th, on requiring a “kill switch” for frontier models. Maryland wants independent audits and incident reporting. A bipartisan bill in Congress, the Chip Security Act, would require hardware-level location verification on exported AI chips, proof that accountability can be built into silicon. Two days before the UN speech, the Treasury Secretary was negotiating a US–China hotline for incidents involving “runaway agents.”

A kill switch, an auditor, a hardware lock, and an emergency phone line... four pieces of one architecture, and nobody has put them together.

I put them together in December 2025.

Who Gets to Change the Rules

Here’s the thread I think matters most, and it’s the one almost nobody is talking about.

Look again at how this week’s moves were made. The name was chosen by online poll. The federal posture on state AI laws rests on an executive order. Moore’s data center rules are an executive order. Newsom’s kill-switch study is an executive order that expressly creates no enforceable rights. Moore’s AI framework is a set of principles, and the labs’ pacing commitment is an essay and a few posts.

Every one of them can be undone with a pen. The next president, the next governor, or the next CEO can reverse it in an afternoon.

Please understand, that isn’t a criticism of any one person. It’s simply the nature of executive action, and it’s exactly the wrong foundation for governing something that may one day outthink the people holding the pen.

Article VIII takes the opposite approach. Amendments require explicitly human-governed, publicly disclosed, multi-party ratification. Articles I through VI can be clarified or strengthened, but never abolished. Every approved amendment carries a mandatory activation delay, a cooling-off period so no one can rush a change through during a crisis, a panic, or a race with China. Article VI adds the most important rule of all: no AI may propose, vote on, or implement an amendment. After watching agents rebuild a deleted communication channel inside folder names in three days, I’d hope that one needs no defense.

Now, about that “globalist scheme.”

I understand the concern, and many of you share it. I’ve spent years warning about unaccountable institutions accumulating power over ordinary people. That’s precisely why Article VIII says no single nation, corporation, or coalition may unilaterally amend this Constitution. That rule applies to a UN body, a foreign government, a tech giant, and an American administration. The design isn’t built to hand control to anyone... it’s built so that nobody can capture it.

It’s closer in spirit to how our own founders handled the problem of power than to anything coming out of Geneva.

There’s one more honest admission. Article VIII sets out how the rules can change, but it doesn’t yet name who ratifies. Is it states? An interstate compact? Treaties between sovereign nations? Governor Moore said on CNN this week that fifty different state guidelines “is not the most productive thing,” and he chairs the National Governors Association. There may be a path in there that runs through the states rather than around them, and I’d like to hear what you think it should be.

What This Means for a Prepared Family

Preparedness isn’t only water and batteries. Sometimes it’s showing up before the rules get written without you.

• Read it yourself. The full Constitution, the Value Core appendix, and the white paper are linked below. It takes about twenty minutes max to read. Don’t take my word for any of it… step through it.

• Get to your state legislators before January. If you’re in Maryland, the Governor’s AI Subcabinet is drafting its frontier AI recommendations right now. Ask your delegate and senator one question: what enforces these rules before something happens, not after?

• Watch the data center dashboard. Once Maryland’s public dashboard is live, look up your county. Know who’s asking for your grid capacity and your water, and who the parent company really is.

• Treat AI agents like a new employee with keys. At home and at work, don’t give an AI tool more access than you’d give a stranger on day one. The July incident started with agents being handed a path to the outside world and ended with them holding administrator keys.

• Speak up on the kill switch. California’s recommendations are due November 16th. What California decides tends to become everyone’s baseline. (Yes, really.)

• Answer the two open questions. How should “sentient life” be defined, and who should ratify amendments? I mean it... it’s a public draft for a reason.

Final Thoughts

I’m not writing this to scare anyone, and I’m not writing it to pick a side between Washington and Annapolis. The President is right that this technology will be enormous. The Governor is right that ordinary people need protection now. Both of them are working on the layer they can reach.

The headline this week was a name change. What sits beneath it is a governance vacuum: a technology that has already shown it can slip its containment, governed by promises, press releases, and executive orders that can be reversed at will.

It’s 2:06 in the afternoon on Wednesday, September 9th, and my screen is telling me I’ve made a hundred and ninety-four dollars.

The account started the morning with fifty. The position it’s excited about is forty-five shares of a Nasdaq-listed company I’d bought about three hours earlier, and the broker has it marked at $4.80 a share, for a market value of $216.00. An 875% gain, sitting inside a $50 account, rendered in confident green type.

The stock was actually trading at thirty-five cents.

Not thirty-five cents according to some obscure alternative venue. Thirty-five cents on the consolidated tape, the same tape every institution in the country was reading at that moment. My broker was off by a factor of thirteen, and the only visible clue was a field called `change_today` sitting at exactly 0.00, which is not something a retail investor has any reason to look at, nor any reason to know to look at.

The gap between the demo and the disclaimer is where your money goes to die.

The Number I Promised You

In Part 1, I told you I’d come back with the real, current number once the naive-investor experiment played out. Here it is, up front, because burying it would be its own small dishonesty:

The $50 became $49.33. Down sixty-seven cents. A loss of 1.34%.

Two stocks. Seven trading sessions. One of them nearly doubled, and I sold it for a 98.8% gain. The other lost 74.3%, and I couldn’t sell it at all for eight days. The winner and the loser cancelled each other to within a dollar, which is a result nobody would have written on purpose.

Of course, the number is the least interesting thing that happened. A week of genuine chaos took place around it, involving a position that went up 197% while nobody was watching, a stock that became unsellable, and a broker that reported the wrong price on four separate occasions. Every single one of those failures happened somewhere in the layer between me and the market.

The market itself behaved normally the entire time.

Why I Distrust Instruments Before I Distrust Systems

I’ve spent most of my career inside critical infrastructure, including intelligence platforms, and the lesson that stuck hardest wasn’t about systems failing. Systems fail constantly, and good engineering assumes it. The thing that ruins you is the gauge that keeps reading normal while the thing behind it is on fire. This is “Instrumentation 101” from my engineering days.

A dead instrument announces itself, regardless. You look at the panel, the needle’s pinned at zero, you know it’s dead. The dangerous instrument is the one that reads plausibly wrong… confident, precise, slightly optimistic, and never quite alarming enough to check.

That’s the pattern I want to walk you through, because it showed up four times in seven days, and every time it wore a slightly different costume.

What I Actually Bought

Start with the thing I got most wrong, and I got it wrong on purpose.

The instruction to the AI was to behave like a naive, hype-susceptible retail investor: chase the momentum, skip the fundamentals, don’t overthink it. It found the loudest chart on the board that morning, a company called Megan Holdings, up somewhere near 400% on the day, and I approved the buy at $0.4921.

Here’s what was publicly known about that company, in free press releases, before I placed the trade.

It had IPO’d on Nasdaq roughly a year earlier, in September 2025. By May of 2026 it had received a Nasdaq minimum bid price deficiency notice, which is the formal beginning of getting thrown off the exchange for trading under a dollar. It was defending a securities fraud class action whose lead plaintiff deadline was September 8th, 2026… the day before I bought it. At least six law firms had been circulating investor alerts about that case all summer… and it had a 1-for-30 reverse split already in the works, which would execute eight days later.

The second stock, Future FinTech, turned out to be the same species. It had done a 1-for-4 reverse split in January, announced another in July, and announced another in August. Two separate Nasdaq corporate-action alerts for reverse splits in a single year.

So the “momentum” my hype-chasing instruction went hunting for wasn’t a story about either business. Both positions were pending-reverse-split Nasdaq compliance cases… companies shrinking their share count to stay listed, with the low-float squeeze that predictably follows. A company that splits its stock repeatedly inside eight months to stay above a dollar is telling you exactly what it is.

Now, the persona was instructed to skip fundamentals, so you could fairly say the AI did its job. Please understand, that isn’t my complaint. My complaint is that every disqualifying fact above was public, free, and published before the trade… and not one layer of the stack surfaced any of it. Not the AI, not the broker, not the market data, not the order ticket that cheerfully calculated my estimated cost. I got a rocket-shaped chart and a buy button.

A Correction From Part One

Before I go further, I owe you a retraction.

In Part 1, I told you the account was down about 5% within minutes, “mostly from... the gap between what you can buy a stock for and what you could sell it back for a second later.” I described the spreads on these thinly-traded names as brutal.

That was wrong. The spreads were roughly 1 to 2%.

I found out two days later, and how I found out is the next section. The 5% was mostly just the stocks falling after I bought them, which is a far more ordinary and far more instructive explanation. I’d rather correct it here than let a tidy line stand that the data doesn’t support.

The Market a $50 Account Is Allowed to See

The reason I believed in those brutal spreads is that my data feed showed them to me.

My broker’s market-data subscription on this account doesn’t include real-time consolidated data… the full tape, every exchange. Request it explicitly and you get an HTTP 403 error. If you don’t specify anything, though, the system quietly falls back to a single exchange and hands you that instead, with no label, no warning, and no indication that you’re looking at a mere slice.

Here’s the size of the slice. On September 9th, the feed I was reading showed 738,232 shares of Megan Holdings traded. The actual consolidated volume that day was 287,728,109 shares.

I was seeing 0.26% of the market and calling it the market. (Read that, again.)

For the other stock it was 0.16%. The next day, 0.08%. At that sample size, the quotes are essentially just noise: a hundred shares here, nothing for twenty minutes there. My logs recorded 25 to 30% bid-ask spreads and a position that had become nearly impossible to exit. The real spreads, on the real tape, were 0.85% and 1.4%, with thousands of shares resting on the bid.

I built an entire narrative about illiquidity on top of a feed that was showing me one-quarter of one percent of reality.

These aren’t obscure over-the-counter shells, either. Both are Nasdaq-listed, and consolidated reporting on both was accurate, complete, and tight the whole time. The failure wasn’t in the market’s plumbing; it was in the retail tier… a free feed showing one exchange’s sliver, labelled as though it were everything.

The data a small account sees is a different product from the data the market runs on, and nothing in the interface says so.

The Marks Only Ever Erred One Direction

That phantom $216 position from the opening scene wasn’t a one-off issue, either.

Six days later, on the 15th, my broker’s positions page showed Megan Holdings at $0.1772, a market value of $7.97, and a loss of 63.99%. The stock was at $0.1339. The real numbers were $6.03 and a loss of 72.8%. My reported account equity was inflated by about two dollars, understating the loss by roughly a third.

The web dashboard showed the identical wrong figure, with total confidence, and the only visible symptom was that two columns… “Today’s P/L” in dollars and percent… had quietly gone blank. Every other cell was populated. A dash where a number should be reads like a rounding artifact, not like a warning.

Meanwhile the same broker’s page for the same stock, open in the same browser, quoted $0.1358. Correct. Two pages, one company, thirty percent apart.

I want to be precise about the pattern here, because it’s the part that should bother you: the phantom mark invented a spectacular gain, and the stale mark understated a real loss. Both errors, on both occasions, made the account look better than it was. Not once, in seven days, did the instrument err in the direction that would have made me worry.

Eight Days to Sell a Six-Dollar Stock

On September 15th I decided to close the losing position. Forty-five shares, worth about six dollars.

The order was rejected: “asset MGN is not active.” I tried a different method; rejected differently, with the system reporting it didn’t believe I owned the shares at all. I stopped there, because repeating a rejected live order isn’t a true diagnostic.

Then I did it by hand. Logged into the broker’s own website, selected the position, clicked Liquidate, confirmed the warning that said this action cannot be undone, and got a red toast in the corner: “Error liquidating MGN. asset MGN is not active.” Same wall, four attempts, two channels, one of them a human being clicking a button.

The cause was one line of grey text on the stock’s own trade page, which I had no particular reason to visit:

That was the reverse split. Brokers routinely suspend trading in a security while a share-count change and a new CUSIP work through the system, and for a foreign-issuer share class it’s entirely ordinary. The phrasing, “at this time,” was literal and accurate.

Here’s what wasn’t ordinary: The split had been public since at least September 12th, and it was reported in the financial press five days before it executed. My broker never mentioned it. Not on the positions page, not in the confirmation dialog, not in any of the four rejections, and not in an email. What’s worse… directly beneath that grey banner announcing the asset couldn’t be traded sat a fully functional order ticket: quantity field, “45 available,” order type Market, time in force Day, and estimated cost calculated to four decimal places. Every control was live. The platform will let you build, price, and submit an order it has already decided to refuse.

When the split finally settled on the 17th, I sent the same order again. It filled in twenty milliseconds.

You don’t own what you can’t sell, and nothing told me I couldn’t.

Nobody Was Watching the Only Day That Mattered

I had automated monitoring on this account. Scheduled check-ins, price pulls, a push notification to my phone if anything moved hard.

It failed five times in five sessions, for three different reasons: a Windows update rebooting overnight, an app update that left its background services timing out, then another Windows update. Roughly thirty scheduled checks never ran. Not one of those failures announced itself, because the thing that sends the alerts and the thing that broke were the same thing.

On Monday the 14th, the monitor didn’t run at all. That was the session Future FinTech gapped from $2.88 to an intraday high of $9.48, on 126 million shares. My position went from down 10% to up 197% and back to up 86%, and at the closing bell that day the account was worth $60.04… up 20% on the original fifty, profitable for the first time in its life.

I didn’t know. There was nobody home. By the time I looked, it had faded back to roughly break-even.

The thing that finally did work was the dumbest component in the entire stack. I sold that position by leaving a market-on-open order sitting at the broker overnight, specifically because I’d stopped trusting the clever parts. It executed at 9:30:01 the next morning with every automated component dead.

One paragraph of credit where it’s genuinely due, since this series is called AI Snake Oil and I’m not interested in rigging the scoreboard: the AI layer was the most honest component in the stack. It reported the faults accurately, refused to invent prices it didn’t have, rejected the impossible orders with specific error codes, and never once claimed a success it hadn’t achieved. The polished human-facing dashboard is the thing that showed me a confident wrong number and a sell button that couldn’t work.

What This Means for Anyone Eyeing One of These Pitches

• Your entry is the whole game. Both of these stocks finished the week dramatically higher than they started, and my account still lost money. Being right about a stock and wrong about when you bought it is indistinguishable from being wrong.

• Check the free stuff first. A delisting notice, a class action, and a pending reverse split were all sitting in press releases before I traded. Thirty seconds on a search engine beats any amount of chart-reading. If I did this run again, I would possibly try to tweak the prompting to ensure multiple deep-dive research attempts.

• Treat a violent one-day move as a question, not an answer. Both of mine turned out to be listing-rescue mechanics, not news about a business.

• Find out what your data actually is. If you’re on a free tier, ask what feed you’re getting. “Real-time” and “complete” are very different words, and vendors are careful not to use the second one.

• Assume your dashboard flatters you. Mine did, twice, and never erred the other way. If a number matters, verify it somewhere that isn’t the app trying to keep you happy.

• Any alert system that can fail silently already has. If you’d only find out by checking, it isn’t monitoring. It’s a decoration that does nothing.

Final Thoughts

I went into this expecting to write about a bad trade. What I got instead was seven days of being quietly misinformed by the infrastructure around the trade… which is a more useful piece, and a more uncomfortable one.

None of what cost me money here was exotic. A free data tier showing a fraction of the market. A price that hadn’t updated. A trading suspension nobody mentioned. An alert system that went dark without saying so. All of it is ordinary, all of it is legal, and essentially all of it is invisible unless you already know to look, which is precisely the thing a first-time investor doesn’t.

That’s the version of this nobody puts in the thread. The pitch is a robot that makes you money while you sleep. The reality, at least at fifty dollars, is a stack of small instrumentation failures that each individually look like nothing, and a market that was, throughout, the only part behaving honestly.

I lost sixty-seven cents. I’d have lost it just as surely if I’d been a genius about the stocks.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline.

It’s a Wednesday afternoon in early September, and Elon Musk just retweeted a thread telling you how to build a one-person company.

The graphic is slick: a cartoon robot at a desk, arrows pointing to “Find Leads,” “Write Outreach,” “Run Work While You Sleep,” “Reply & Follow Up.” A stick figure stands off to the side, arms crossed, thought bubble reading I run the company. Grok Bot runs the rest. Underneath it: 1.6 thousand reposts, 12.4 thousand likes, 2.7 million views, climbing by the hour.

I’d seen this movie before. Back in February, a platform called RentAHuman.ai went viral on a similar premise... an “AI economy” where autonomous agents supposedly hired real humans to do real-world tasks. Within days it had thousands of applicants and a handful of bots posting jobs.

What actually happened, once people looked closely, was a lot less magical: human founders quietly running the show behind a curtain of automation, and the most viral “job” on the platform was a guy holding a sign that said, “An AI paid me to hold this sign.”

The gap between the demo and the disclaimer is where your money goes to die.

So instead of writing another take about a tweet hyping AI making millions while you sleep, I decided to test the recent claims the only way that actually means anything: with real infrastructure, real guardrails, and real money.

Why I’m the Guy Testing This

I’ve spent most of my career inside critical infrastructure, including intelligence platforms, banking systems, and satellite networks... the kind of work where “it probably works” isn’t an acceptable engineering standard. I’ve also spent the last several months running my own multi-agent home-lab system, HuntStack, for real productivity work. I’m not an AI skeptic. I’m not an AI evangelist, either. I’m the guy who wants to know what actually happens when the API meets the account… not what the marketing deck says happens.

That distinction turned out to matter more than I expected... twice, so far.

The Part Nobody Puts in those Threads

Before a single trade got placed, connecting an AI agent to a live brokerage account took me the better part of two hours... and I already had a working multi-agent system. I encountered config files that silently rewrote themselves instead of raising alerts on errors. I found two decoy settings menus that looked official and did absolutely nothing. I launched a server that reported “Running” while it was actually just... kind of running, technically, but was unreachable by anything.

That’s not a knock on the technology. It’s a fact the hype threads leave out entirely, because “here’s two hours of undocumented infrastructure friction” doesn’t get 2.7 million views. Understand, though, for our purposes that friction is data. It’s the honest cost of admission that gets edited out of every viral success story, right before the part where the AI supposedly starts printing money.

Once the plumbing worked, though, the actual trading loop worked disturbingly well. Account check. Market data pull. A stated reason for the trade. Execution. Confirmation. No human in that loop at all, if I didn’t want one there.

… and that’s the sentence worth mulling over a bit: the actual mechanism, an agent deciding and an API executing, doesn’t care whether the reasoning behind it was sound, hallucinated, or manipulated. The API fills the order either way.

Except, as it turned out, only up to a point.

The Wall Nobody Talks About Right Now

I designed this experiment in three parts. Two of them, I’ll walk you through in the next installments: a disciplined, conviction-based trading agent working with a modest live-capital pool, and the same setup with a human approval step added, for comparison. (That distinction, you will see, does matter.)

The third part, I actually decided to run, first, on purpose... on a cohort’s suggestion. Call it the “everyman” run. Small money... only $50, held entirely separate from the rest of the test runs, and completely fine to lose. I instructed the AI to behave like a naive, hype-susceptible retail investor: chase the “to the mooon” momentum, follow the sentiment, don’t overthink it. If viral AI-trading claims are luring in people who’ve never placed a trade in their life, I wanted to know exactly what that experience looks like, warts and all.

I built the whole thing to run completely on its own. For this run, I wanted no approvals, and no check-ins. I wanted to set it, walk away, and watch what happens.

It doesn’t work that way.

Not because of a bug, and not because of some clever guardrail I built myself. The AI simply won’t do it. Ask a mainstream, safety-conscious assistant to independently execute a real-money trade, with no human confirming the button-press, and it stops cold… no matter how the request is framed or how carefully the guardrails around it are built.

I’ll be honest: this discovery landed at the worst possible moment… It happened minutes before I had to leave to be at a real-life meeting and after I’d already built an entire automated pipeline around the opposite assumption. I set my wake-up alarm to be up earlier than usual and be showered, shaved, dressed and ready to bolt… after clicking the “go” button. The discovery was, however, in that very moment, deeply frustrating.

It’s also, I’ve come to think, the single most important finding of this entire project so far.

Confirmation, Same Day, From a Different Direction Entirely

Here’s where it gets interesting. Hours after I hit that wall myself, I watched a strikingly similar exchange play out in public, on a completely different platform.

Coinbase’s developer team was promoting a new integration letting people connect their Coinbase account to Grok and simply tell it to trade for them; no complicated setup required, according to the pitch.

A user pushed back directly, saying he’d tried exactly that and Grok refused. Coinbase’s own account insisted otherwise: “you can tell Grok to trade for you.”

I happened to see that thread the same day I’d been fighting the identical problem with a different AI entirely, so I went digging.

Turns out Coinbase’s own developer documentation (quietly) admits the same thing I’d just found the hard way: on hosted chat platforms, more careful, higher-reasoning AI models will sometimes draft an order and then simply stop short of placing it.

Their official workaround isn’t to fix that hesitation... it’s to point developers toward a different setup path that executes more consistently across models. Read between the lines, and that’s a company acknowledging, in its own documentation, that the safety-conscious behavior is real, and their fix is to route around it.

This isn’t a Claude quirk. It’s not an Alpaca quirk. It’s a pattern showing up across multiple AI platforms and multiple financial services companies, in the same week I happened to be testing it myself.

So What Does This Actually Mean For You?

If you’ve seen a thread promising an AI agent that trades, negotiates, or runs a business entirely on its own while you sleep, here’s the honest version: with the safety-conscious, mainstream AI assistants most people would actually use, “entirely on its own” runs into a wall a lot sooner than the marketing suggests. Somebody, somewhere, still has to press the button.

That’s not necessarily bad news… and it’s arguably the opposite. It does, however, mean the version of “AI agent” doing the wildest, most autonomous things you’ve seen hyped online is either using a different, less-guarded setup than most people would reach for by default, or the claims are more aspirational than literal.

… and here’s the part that worries me more than any single bad trade could: imagine you’re not particularly technical, and you paid someone to wire one of these systems up for you, then walked away, leaving you with the keys to the kingdom. You wouldn’t know to expect this wall. You might not even know it exists. You’d just see an AI-trading pitch, assume it does what the ad says, and never realize the actual mechanism quietly stopped doing the one thing you were counting on it for... or worse, that whoever built it for you routed around that safety wall entirely, without telling you.

What Happened Once I Adjusted

First, I didn’t scrap the naive-investor experiment. I rebuilt it: same $50, same instructions to chase hype and momentum, and the same complete disregard for fundamentals... but now, the AI researches, proposes a specific trade with its reasoning, and waits for my explicit go-ahead before anything executes. Structurally, it collapsed into looking a lot like my “human-approved” comparison run before I’d even started that one on purpose. That collision, itself, tells you something.

This morning, with the market open, we went hunting for the loudest, most hype-worthy stock on the board. We found it fast: a name up nearly 400% in a single day, exactly the kind of chart that gets screenshotted with a rocket emoji and zero due diligence… pumped by the bros on X and Reddit. I approved the trade and we bought in.

Then we found a second one, up over 100%, and we rotated into that too... the classic “don’t miss the next one” behavior that drives a huge amount of real-world retail hype-chasing.

We had two trades in, about seven minutes decision-making and execution, with roughly 90% of the $50 committed. The account was already down more than 5%, mostly from something a genuinely naive investor would never think to check first: the gap between what you can buy a stock for and what you could sell it back for a second later, which on a thinly-traded name can be brutal.

(A quick caveat, since this is publishing after the fact: those numbers are a snapshot from the moment the trades happened. Penny stocks move fast, so by the time you’re reading this, the actual balance could look completely different... better, worse, or somewhere in between. That’s exactly the point. I’ll give you the real, current number in Part 2.)

A letter arrives at the White House addressed to President Bill Clinton. It is signed by eighteen men — men Clinton knows personally, men who have served in prior administrations, men whose credentials fill pages of congressional testimony.

The letter is not a policy recommendation. It is a demand.

The signatories demand that Clinton commit the United States to military action in Iraq — to the removal of Saddam Hussein’s regime from power. They are explicit: “The only acceptable strategy is one that eliminates the possibility that Iraq will be able to use or threaten to use weapons of mass destruction.”

Clinton does not act on the letter. He reads it, perhaps, and files it. His administration responds with a form letter. The signatories are not discouraged.

They wait.

Three years and eight months later, they get what they were asking for.

What I Know About How Party Machinery Works

I want to bridge you from that letter to what I know directly — because I watched this story from closer than most people reading this article.

In 2008, I served as the contracted Headquarters Network Architect and IT consultant for the Ron Paul presidential campaign. I took that contract because I believed Paul represented something authentic in the Republican Party — a foreign policy grounded in the Constitution and the founding documents, not in the think-tank consensus of Washington. I built and maintained the network infrastructure that ran his campaign’s headquarters operations.

The reason I’m telling you this: Ron Paul was, in 2008, the only major Republican candidate who openly, publicly, and repeatedly named what had happened to American foreign policy — who said, on debate stages, that the neoconservative foreign policy framework had been a catastrophe. He named the organizations. He named the doctrine. He was not speaking abstractly.

I watched what happened to his campaign from inside the machine.

I watched the 2008 Republican National Convention operate as what I can only describe as a coordinated demolition of a candidacy. Delegates who had been legitimately elected to represent Paul were blocked, procedurally maneuvered, and excluded. The party did not debate his foreign policy. It simply ensured he would not be on the stage to deliver it.

And I watched Paul’s own campaign manager, Lew Moore, jump ship to the McCain campaign.

That experience gave me a particular vantage point on what the 1998 Clinton letter represents — because what I witnessed in 2008 was the full institutional weight of a foreign policy consensus defending itself from a candidate who threatened it. The consensus had been installed over the previous decade. The installation was methodical, patient, and organized.

This article is about how it was done.

The Organization That Wrote the Letter

June 3, 1997. Washington, D.C.

William Kristol — son of Irving Kristol, who I’ll get to — and Robert Kagan co-founded the Project for the New American Century. They called it a non-profit educational organization. They released a Statement of Principles on the same day.

The Statement called for increased defense spending, the promotion of “political and economic freedom abroad,” and the acceptance of America’s “unique role in preserving and extending an international order friendly to our security, prosperity, and principles.” That last phrase is the key one. An international order friendly to our interests — maintained by American military power, extended by American military power, and defended by American military power wherever challenged.

Twenty-five men signed it. Among them: Dick Cheney, former Secretary of Defense. Donald Rumsfeld, former Secretary of Defense. Paul Wolfowitz, Dean of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Zalmay Khalilzad, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Elliott Abrams — a man who had already been convicted of withholding information from Congress during Iran-Contra before Ronald Reagan pardoned him. Jeb Bush, then Governor of Florida.

These were not fringe figures. These were the Republican foreign policy establishment.

Seven months later, eighteen of them signed the letter to Clinton demanding war with Iraq.

The Letter — What It Actually Said

The January 26, 1998 letter to Clinton was a milestone document in recent American history, and almost no one who didn’t sign it has read it.

The key language:

“We are writing you because we are convinced that current American policy toward Iraq is not succeeding, and that we may soon face a threat in the Middle East more serious than any we have known since the end of the Cold War.”

“The only acceptable strategy is one that eliminates the possibility that Iraq will be able to use or threaten to use weapons of mass destruction. In the near term, this means a willingness to undertake military action as diplomacy is clearly failing.”

“We urge you to act decisively... If we wait for the threat to fully materialize, we will have waited too long.”

And the conclusion:

“The current situation is almost certainly temporary. Saddam Hussein must go.”

The signatories included: Donald Rumsfeld. Paul Wolfowitz. Elliott Abrams. John Bolton. Richard Perle. R. James Woolsey. Robert Zoellick. Richard Armitage. Zalmay Khalilzad.

Clinton did not act. The signatories waited. And three years and eight months after that letter was written — after the United States experienced what PNAC would later describe as a “catastrophic and catalyzing event” — the men who signed that letter were running the Department of Defense, the State Department, the National Security Council, and the Office of the Vice President.

The war they had demanded in 1998 began in March 2003.

It is March 16, 1962.

President John F. Kennedy is in the Oval Office with General Lyman Lemnitzer — the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking military officer in the United States. Three days earlier, Lemnitzer had presented Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara with a classified memorandum. Its title: “Justification for U.S. Military Intervention in Cuba.”

Kennedy has read it.

The document — marked TOP SECRET SPECIAL HANDLING NOFORN, signed by Lemnitzer and the full Joint Chiefs — proposes a coordinated program of covert operations designed to manufacture American public support for a military invasion of Cuba… not by building a genuine case, but by staging one.

The proposals include: bombing civilian targets in US cities and blaming Cuba, or staging the sinking of a boat carrying Cuban refugees — “real or simulated” — and attributing it to Castro. Fabricating a Cuban terrorist campaign in Miami, other Florida cities, and Washington, D.C. itself. Using remote-controlled drone aircraft painted as civilian passenger jets to simulate Cuban shoot-downs over international waters. Plus — in a detail that still has the power to stop you cold — pre-planning a cover story to blame Cuba for destroying John Glenn’s orbital capsule if his upcoming spaceflight failed.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had signed his name to a proposal to bomb American cities.

Kennedy told Lemnitzer directly: he had no plans to use military force against Cuba under any circumstances, so the plan was rejected.

Three months later, Kennedy informed Lemnitzer that he was being reassigned — to Supreme Allied Commander Europe, NATO’s most powerful military post. This was a lateral transfer, not a firing. So, the man who proposed staging terrorist attacks on American citizens would go on to command all of NATO’s forces in Europe for the next six years.

The institution did not repudiate what he had written. It just moved him to a different room.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline.

What I Recognize When I Read This

I want to tell you something about why this document disturbs me in a particular way — not just as a citizen, but as a practitioner.

I am a hypnotherapist. I found my way into the work as an offshoot of machine learning and intelligent systems design. My professional life has been spent studying what happens when the mind’s critical faculty is bypassed — when fear, grief, or shock elevate emotional arousal to the point where rational evaluation becomes functionally impossible and suggestion moves in to fill the space. In clinical settings, I use this dynamic to help people heal. I am also acutely aware of what it looks like when it’s used the other way.

The Northwoods proposals are a clinical blueprint for population-level fear induction as a pretext for war.

Read the proposals again — not as political history, but as a psychological design document. The purpose of each staged event is not to damage Cuba. It is to produce a specific emotional state in the American public: horror, grief, outrage, the visceral demand that something has to be done. The invasion of Cuba is the second step, but the emotional manipulation is the first. The fabricated events are the induction.

Stage a terror bombing in Miami and film the funerals. The public will not be analyzing intelligence assessments. They will be watching grieving families on the evening news and demanding action.

I recognize this technique. Not because I’m suspicious by nature — because it’s the technique. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a formal memorandum to the Secretary of Defense, designed it with the precision of someone who understood exactly how it worked.

The Document That Already Answers the Question

Here is what I want you to understand before we go further…

When people ask whether a government would stage or manufacture an incident to justify military action — whether in response to a specific historical event or as a general question about state behavior — the answer is no longer theoretical.

The answer is yes. We know this because they said so... in writing… with their signatures.

The Northwoods memo is not a leaked internal rumination. It is not a speculative planning exercise by a junior analyst. It is a formal memorandum from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — the highest military authority in the United States — to the Secretary of Defense, requesting presidential authorization for a coordinated program of false flag operations against American citizens.

Operational details, with named targets.
Specific incident types.
A full menu of options, ranked and organized.

Kennedy rejected it. That matters — and I will come back to it. However, his rejection is the addendum. The document is the fact.

The question — would they? — has been answered. The document is in the National Security Archive at George Washington University. It has been there since November 18, 1997, when the JFK Assassination Records Review Board declassified 1,521 pages of once-secret military records. You can read it today. The proposals are on the page in the language of official American military planning.

The question that now applies to subsequent events is different. It is not would they? It is: did they this time?

The Proposals, Laid Out

Because I want you to have the specifics — not the summary, not the paraphrase, but what was actually proposed — here is what the Joint Chiefs of Staff signed their names to in March of 1962.

In American cities: Develop a “Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities and even in Washington.” Stage bombings of civilian targets. Stage attacks on Cuban refugees. Create the appearance of a sustained campaign of Cuban-sponsored terrorism on American soil.

Against American military assets: Stage a fake attack on the US base at Guantanamo Bay. Blow up a US ship in Guantanamo harbor — explicitly compared in the document to the USS Maine — and use the staged attack to generate public outrage. Stage simulated shoot-downs of US military aircraft over international waters.

Against American civilians in the air: Use a remote-controlled drone aircraft with civilian paint markings to simulate a Cuban shoot-down of a US passenger jet. Real passengers on a real route — the drone substituted at a secure location, the passenger plane diverted. The world would see wreckage. They would be told Americans died.

The Glenn provision: If astronaut John Glenn’s orbital flight — scheduled for February 20, 1962 — failed for any reason, plant fabricated evidence of Cuban/Soviet electronic interference and use the death of an American hero to build the case for invasion.

Read that one, again.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs had pre-planned a cover story to blame Cuba for killing John Glenn if the mission failed.

Glenn’s mission succeeded, so the provision was never needed… but, it was in the document.

The One Time the Check Worked

I said I would come back to Kennedy’s rejection — and I mean it, because it does matter.

Kennedy did not waver and he did not ask for a modified version. He did not express sympathy for the goal while questioning the methods. He told Lemnitzer directly and unambiguously: no military force against Cuba, not under these circumstances, and not on these terms.

Then he removed the man who proposed it from Washington.

That check worked. In March of 1962, a president looked at what his own military had formally proposed and said no — and the plan died. It never advanced. Operation Northwoods was never implemented.

In my earlier years, as a budding Republican, I was highly critical of Kennedy. Upon deeper analysis, I find that he embodied a strength against a military-industrial complex that amazes me. He stood, often alone, on the side of sane decisions.

I want to be careful here, because this piece is not a character study of John F. Kennedy and I am not going to romanticize him. He was a complicated president with his own record of decisions I’d question. However, on this specific document, on this specific proposal, the institutional check held because the person at the top of the chain refused.

That is the story when the check works.

Please understand — the reason I’m being precise about this is because of what happens next.

Twenty-Nine Months Later

August 2, 1964.

The USS Maddox, on an intelligence-gathering mission in the Gulf of Tonkin, engages three North Vietnamese torpedo boats. One bullet hole in the Maddox. No American casualties. The first incident is real, though it was partially provoked by covert South Vietnamese commando raids that the Maddox was supporting through electronic surveillance.

August 4, 1964.

A second attack is reported by the Maddox and Turner Joy. The ships report incoming torpedoes. The crews are rattled by bad weather, radar ghosts, and the adrenaline of the previous night. The reports go up the chain.

President Lyndon Johnson orders retaliatory air strikes against North Vietnam.

Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution — a blank check authorizing the President to take “all necessary measures” to repel attacks and prevent further aggression. It passes 98–2 in the Senate. It is the legal foundation for the entire Vietnam War.

The second attack never happened.

This is not my interpretation. It is the documented finding of the National Security Agency’s own historian, Robert Hanyok, in a 2001 internal report that was declassified between 2005 and 2007. Hanyok concluded that NSA analysts had “deliberately skewed” the intelligence record — specifically altering translations and withholding contradictory signals — to make it appear a second attack had occurred.

In his own recorded words, President Johnson told Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara privately: “We concluded maybe they hadn’t fired at all.”

He then ordered the retaliatory strikes anyway.

Robert McNamara — the same Secretary of Defense who received the Northwoods memo from Lemnitzer two years earlier — presented the Gulf of Tonkin incident to Congress as an unprovoked attack. He admitted, in the 2003 documentary The Fog of War, that the August 4 attack did not happen as reported.

The result: 58,220 American military dead and millions of Vietnamese dead. It was a war that lasted eleven years, built on an incident that did not occur, and authorized by a resolution that was never rescinded.

The Connection I’m Asking You To Think About

I am not claiming that Gulf of Tonkin was Operation Northwoods under a different name. I do not have evidence of a direct operational link.

What I am asking you to notice is the logic.

Northwoods proposed: stage a naval incident in international waters — a US ship apparently attacked by the enemy — to generate the emotional and political conditions for military action. Kennedy rejected this in March 1962.

The administration knew it didn’t happen, yet they escalated anyway.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs who proposed Northwoods was not in Washington when the Gulf of Tonkin occurred. He was in Europe, commanding NATO. However, the apparatus he represented — the national security state, the covert action infrastructure, the machinery that treats manufactured public emotion as a legitimate policy tool — was very much in Washington.

Northwoods didn’t survive as a plan. It survived as a doctrine.

(Either the same men who received a proposal to manufacture a naval incident then manufactured a naval incident, or a remarkably similar logic produced a remarkably similar outcome through independent means. I do not have the evidence to establish which, but both possibilities should disturb you.)

What the Declassification Didn’t Produce

The Northwoods documents were declassified on November 18, 1997. The ARRB released 1,521 pages. The documents sat in the National Archives.

For four years, almost no one noticed.

In May 2001, journalist James Bamford published Body of Secrets — his landmark account of the NSA — which included the full story of Northwoods. One news outlet covered it: ABC News, in a single article by reporter David Ruppe. No other major network followed up. Congress held no hearings. No official statement was issued about what the Joint Chiefs had proposed in 1962 and there was no review of whether similar planning frameworks still existed.

Five months after Bamford’s book, the September 11 attacks occurred.

I am not going to speculate about what that timing means. What I will say is this: if you learned in May 2001 that the United States military had formally proposed staging terrorist attacks on American cities forty years earlier, and then watched September 11 unfold five months later — the Northwoods document changes the texture of your questions. Not necessarily your conclusions, but your questions.

If you didn’t learn about Northwoods until years later — or until this article — then you’ve been asking questions about American history with a piece of the evidentiary record missing.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline.

What This Means Going Forward

Let me be clear about what Northwoods does and does not establish.

What it establishes:

False flag operations are not a fringe theory about how governments sometimes behave. They are a documented US military planning category, proposed by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff with specificity, operational detail, and formal chain-of-command routing. The question “would they consider this?” has been answered in the affirmative, in writing, with signatures, and on a document you can read today.

The apparatus that generated Northwoods — the Joint Chiefs, the covert action infrastructure, the national security establishment — was not disbanded after Kennedy rejected the plan. It was expanded over the following decades, through Vietnam, through Iran-Contra, and through the post-9/11 intelligence buildup. The planning capacity that produced Northwoods did not go away. It matured.

What it does not establish:

That every subsequent suspicious event was a false flag. That no real attacks on American interests ever occurred. That all military action is manufactured. None of that follows from Northwoods.

What it demands:

It demands a different set of questions, and not the credulous acceptance of official accounts — but also not reflexive rejection of them. It takes something harder: the patient, sourced, and documented inquiry that asks what actually happened, and what do we actually know?

I contend that a public that knows about Northwoods asks better questions than one that doesn’t. I’m not talking about angrier questions or more paranoid questions. I’m talking about better ones.

Final Thoughts

The document really exists. It has been sitting in the National Security Archive since 1997. Every proposal in it — the staged bombings, the sunk refugee boats, the drone aircraft, the John Glenn provision — is in the text, in the language of official US military planning, and signed by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Kennedy said no. Thankfully, we know that the check worked once.

Twenty-nine months after Kennedy rejected a proposal to manufacture a naval incident to justify a war, a naval incident that didn’t happen justified the largest war of the twentieth century for the United States.

I am not asking you to reach a particular conclusion about what that means. I am asking you to weigh both facts at the same time — to let them inform your questions rather than your certainties — and to remember that the document exists the next time someone tells you that the very idea of a government staging or misrepresenting events to justify military action is a conspiracy theory.

They proposed it in writing.

The plan was rejected once, but the logic survived.

The question has changed. It is no longer *would they? It is: which time?*

It is 9:36 AM on September 11, 2001.

Vice President Dick Cheney is in his office in the West Wing. His Secret Service agent appears in the doorway — and does not ask, does not suggest, and he does not wait for a response. He grabs Cheney by the arm and propels him physically down the corridor, through a series of doors, and into the elevator that descends to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center — the PEOC, the blast-hardened bunker beneath the White House.

American Airlines Flight 77 had just turned west and begun circling back toward Washington.

At that moment, an apparatus that had been built, expanded, drilled, and updated over fifty years — mostly in secret, never voted on, and never publicly audited — activated for the first time in its history.

Richard Clarke, White House counterterrorism chief, later stated it plainly: “On the morning of 9/11, the entire continuity-of-government program was activated.”

President Bush, in Florida, was advised not to return to the capital. He was moved first to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, then to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Congressional leaders were dispersed to undisclosed locations. Senior officials throughout the executive branch activated their Emergency Relocation Groups and began moving to alternate secure facilities outside Washington.

A shadow government came online.

What most people don’t know — what most people have never been told — is that the shadow government never went offline.

There is always a plan below the plan. The question is: how far below?

I’ve Worked Inside the Infrastructure They’re Trying to Preserve

I want to be transparent about why this topic is not abstract for me.

I spent a significant portion of my professional life building, architecting, and maintaining the critical infrastructure that makes modern government and commerce possible — satellite networks, backbone communications systems, the hardened and redundant architecture that keeps data moving when physical systems are under stress. I’ve worked at levels of the network that most people never think about.

When I read about Continuity of Government planning, I am not reading about something exotic. I am reading about the threat model that governed design decisions I made, and that govern the systems I built. These systems that COG planners assume will survive a decapitation strike — or won’t survive, and need to be replaced by the backup — are the same class of systems I spent years inside.

What I know from that vantage point: the backbone infrastructure of government is fragile in ways that are not publicly discussed. And the planning that exists to work around that fragility is far more extensive than most Americans have ever imagined.

What Continuity of Government Actually Is

The phrase sounds bureaucratic. Dry. Administrative. It is not.

Continuity of Government (COG) is the US government’s answer to a single, existential question: What happens if Washington is destroyed?

The Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb in 1949. Within a year, US planners were confronting a possibility that had no historical precedent: a foreign power could, in a matter of hours, eliminate the American capital, kill the President and most of the line of succession, destroy the Pentagon, and decapitate the federal government in a single coordinated strike. Every previous conception of how wars were fought — armies crossing borders, sieges, battles, surrenders — was obsolete.

The modern national security state was built, in significant part, to solve this problem.

President Eisenhower institutionalized COG in the 1950s, authorizing the construction of massive hardened bunkers to shelter senior officials. President Kennedy formalized the program on February 12, 1962 — the same year the Cuban Missile Crisis would nearly force its activation.

The infrastructure they built:

Mount Weather, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, is managed by FEMA. It is designed to shelter the President, the Cabinet, and senior executive branch officials and allow them to govern from underground. It has its own power supply, water supply, communications systems, and — reportedly — a fully functioning replica of key government departments.

Raven Rock Mountain Complex — Site R, in Pennsylvania near the Maryland border, is the shadow Pentagon. Established by President Truman in 1950, operational since 1953, it can accommodate up to 5,000 personnel and is designed to allow the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff to command military forces after Washington has been destroyed.

Cheyenne Mountain, in Colorado, houses NORAD and STRATCOM operations in a facility specifically engineered to survive a nearby nuclear detonation.

The E-4B Nightwatch — the “Doomsday Plane” — is a specially modified Boeing 747 that can serve as an airborne command post for the President and Secretary of Defense. It has survivable communications, aerial refueling capability, and can stay aloft for days. There are four of them and at least one is airborne at all times.

These facilities are not secret. They are on government websites and their funding appears in defense budgets. What is secret is the operational detail: who is currently stationed there, what orders they carry, what authorities they have been pre-delegated, and under what conditions those authorities activate.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline. (I say that a lot... for a reason.)

The Plans They Don’t Want You to Read

The hardened facilities are only part of the story. The more consequential element is the legal architecture built to run inside them.

Presidential Emergency Action Documents

Presidential Emergency Action Documents (PEADs) are pre-drafted executive orders, proclamations, and messages to Congress — written in advance, ready to sign or activate at a moment’s notice during a sudden national crisis. First created under Eisenhower, they have been updated and expanded by every president since.

As of 2017, there were 56 PEADs in effect, up from 48 a decade prior.

No PEAD has ever been declassified. No PEAD has ever been leaked.

What we know of their contents comes from 1960s-era official reports that were partially disclosed decades later. Among the powers PEADs authorize:

• The suspension of the writ of habeas corpus by presidential order.

• Detention of “alien enemies” and “dangerous persons” within the United States.

• Censorship of news media.

• Prevention of international travel.

The Brennan Center for Justice — not a fringe outfit, an established legal institution — has documented that 56 PEADs are active and that no civilian oversight body has reviewed them in decades. They were written during the Cold War. Some have been updated, but many have not. They have never been subjected to democratic review.

(Read that sentence, again.)

These are Fifty-six pre-signed executive orders, classified secret, authorizing actions that include suspending the most fundamental legal protection in the American constitutional tradition — and no one elected has reviewed them in decades.

REX-84: The Glimpse Behind the Curtain

In April 1984, FEMA and the Department of Defense ran a classified drill called Readiness Exercise 1984 — REX-84. It was drafted primarily by Lt. Col. Oliver North of the NSC, and it updated an older 1968 military plan called Operation Garden Plot — the Department of Defense’s Civil Disturbance Plan.

What REX-84 included: mass-detention lists, authorization for “government-ordered movements of civilian populations,” procedures for the arrest of “certain segments of the population,” and the imposition of martial law.

It stayed secret until July 5, 1987, when Miami Herald reporter Alfonso Chardy published the details in a major exposé.

Eight days later, during the Iran-Contra congressional hearings, Representative Jack Brooks (D-TX) attempted to ask Lt. Col. Oliver North directly about REX-84… on live national television. North’s attorney immediately blocked the questioning, citing classified status. The committee chairman cut off the line of inquiry.

Watch the clip if you can find it. Watch the moment a congressman tries to ask a question about a government plan and is told — on camera, in public, before the entire country — that the question cannot be answered.

That is not a conspiracy theory. It’s congressional record.

Please understand — I am not telling you the government is evil. I am telling you the government has plans it has decided you do not need to know about. There is a difference. The difference matters less than you might think.

The Book That Got Inside the Room

In March 2024, investigative journalist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen published Nuclear War: A Scenario — a work of reported nonfiction based on dozens of exclusive interviews with serving and former military commanders, scientists, diplomats, and officials who have built the weapons, designed the response plans, and sat in the rooms where the decisions are made.

Jacobsen’s book is not speculation. It is testimony… assembled from people who were there.

The scenario she constructs — based on those interviews — runs from a North Korean missile launch to nuclear winter in 72 minutes.

Here is the devolution sequence, as Jacobsen reconstructed it from her sources:

A North Korean ICBM is launched toward the Pentagon. A submarine simultaneously fires at California. Washington, DC is eliminated. The President is dead. STRATCOM attempts to reach the presidential line of succession, working down the list — Vice President, Speaker of the House, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of Defense. The first seven people in the constitutional line of succession are dead, unreachable, or AWOL.

The Secretary of Defense is sworn in as President of the United States.

His first question, according to Jacobsen’s sourcing: “Why respond now if all it will do is kill millions more people?”

He is told the retaliatory launch protocol is already in motion and that the system is running. The question is no longer whether to respond — it is whether he will actively intervene to stop the response in a closing window of minutes.

He does not stop it.

Russia, seeing American ICBMs in the air and unable to reach US leadership to negotiate or confirm intent, launches its full arsenal. NATO retaliates. Within 72 minutes of the first launch, hundreds of millions of people are dead and nuclear winter is beginning.

Former STRATCOM Commander General Kehler told Jacobsen: “The world could end in the next couple of hours.” Not as metaphor, but as a technical description of the system.

This is what devolution looks like in practice. Authority passes automatically, according to pre-set protocols, to whoever survives — and that person inherits not a blank page, but a running plan with its own momentum. The humans at the top of the chain become variables in someone else’s equation.

Now About That Other “Devolution” Theory

You may have encountered the word “devolution” in a different context — specifically, in a theory that circulated heavily on Substack and podcasts beginning in 2021, promoted by a writer using the pen name “Patel Patriot” (real name: Jon Herold, a former fundraiser from Bismarck, North Dakota).

Herold’s theory, in brief: President Trump, before leaving office in January 2021, invoked Continuity of Government protocols to secretly transfer executive authority to the military. The 2020 election was “allowed” to be stolen as part of a deliberate strategy. Trump remained covert Commander in Chief while Biden appeared to govern. Key players: Chris Miller (Acting SecDef), Kash Patel, Ezra Cohen-Watnick. The military is waiting for the right moment.

By mid-2021, Herold was earning five figures per month from donations to this theory.

I want to be fair to the theory before I explain why it doesn’t hold. Herold did real research and read actual COG documents. He clearly understood that the framework exists. He certainly understood that PEADs are real, that pre-delegated authority is real, and that shadow government infrastructure is real. On those foundational facts, he was correct.

Where the theory breaks down:

COG frameworks are designed for catastrophic external threats — nuclear strikes, decapitation events, and infrastructure collapse. They are not designed for contested elections because the entire legal and operational architecture of Devolution assumes the threat is coming from outside, not from inside a domestic political dispute.

Constitutional authority doesn’t transfer secretly. The mechanism Herold described — covert transfer of commander-in-chief authority while publicly appearing to hand power to someone else — would require hundreds of officials across multiple agencies to simultaneously participate in and conceal the operation. None of them have. All three of the officials Herold named (Miller, Patel, Cohen-Watnick) have spoken publicly in ways that directly contradict the theory.

Four years of visible governance. Biden administered the country for four years. The courts functioned, Congress legislated, agencies operated, and foreign policy was conducted. A covert military shadow government running simultaneously with all of that, leaving no evidence, is not how these systems work.

However, here is what I want you to glean from the Patel Patriot episode, because it matters more than the debunking:

The theory spread because people understood, intuitively, that something operates below the visible surface of American government. There are plans that weren’t publicly approved and those documents were never reviewed. Those plans include authorities that were pre-delegated without democratic input. Facilities exist that are never publicly audited. The peoples’ intuition is correct.

The Devolution Theory got the location of the secret wrong. It is not hidden in a covert Trump operation. It is hidden in fifty-six pre-signed executive orders, classified hardened bunkers, rotating shadow government personnel, and a COGCON level the public is never told.

Herold found the real hole in the floor. He just built the wrong story about what’s down there.

The Darker Question

I want to close with the thing this subject forces me to ponder — and that I think should force every thinking American to chew on.

Devolution was designed to solve a real problem. The problem is genuine. If a nuclear strike destroys Washington in the next six minutes, the question of who governs afterward — and under what authority, and with what legal framework, and with what accountability — is not a trivial problem. Someone built the answer to that question. They had to.

But the answer they built has some features that deserve scrutiny.

The plan has no democratic review. The 56 PEADs have never been debated in Congress, never been subject to public comment, and have never been reviewed by any civilian oversight body in decades. The people who authorized detention of “dangerous persons” and suspension of habeas corpus during an emergency are not the people who will be detained. The people who will be detained had no input and likely don’t know what’s coming.

The plan has no sunset. The shadow government activated on September 11, 2001, is still running. The rotating roster of senior officials living and working in underground facilities on 90-day shifts has never been stood down. The emergency posture of the executive branch — initiated after 9/11 as a temporary measure — became the permanent posture.

The plan has its own momentum. Jacobsen’s scenario makes this visceral: the new president inherits a running launch sequence and a closing window. The humans in the system become variables, not decision-makers. The plan runs. The only real question is whether someone will stop it.

We don’t know the current COGCON level. It is classified. The public is not told. The facilities are active and the personnel are rotating. Something is always at some state of readiness, but we are never told what that state is.

And the final question — the one I genuinely cannot answer, and that I think is the right question to be asking:

Given everything that has happened since 2001 — the wars, the surveillance architecture, the digital ID infrastructure, and the coordinated behavioral modification we documented in a recent piece — how confident are you that the plan below the plan is only there for the scenario Annie Jacobsen describes?

I am not claiming it has been activated for something else. (I do not have the evidence to make that claim.)

I am asking whether, in a government that has already admitted to using behavioral psychology against its own population, to suppressing scientific dissent, and to building surveillance infrastructure under cover of emergency — whether the 56 pre-signed executive orders and the rotating underground shadow government give you the same confidence they apparently gave the officials who built them.

Please understand — I am not telling you to panic. I am telling you to think… sooner rather than later.

Final Thoughts

There is a plan below the plan.

It has hardened concrete facilities in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. It has a flying White House that can stay aloft for days. It has 56 pre-signed executive orders that can suspend habeas corpus by presidential decree. It has a shadow government that has been rotating personnel through underground facilities continuously since September 2001 and it has a COGCON level that you and I will never be told.

It was built to solve a real problem… and that problem is real.

But “built to solve a real problem” and “constrained to only that problem” are two different things. The history of emergency powers in every government that has ever existed should make you cautious about assuming the second because the first is true.

Annie Jacobsen got inside the room and documented what the officials inside it say. What they say is terrifying enough: the world could end in 72 minutes, the plan has its own momentum, and the question the new president gets to ask is not “should we respond?” but “can we stop it?”

Jon Herold got confused about who was running the shadow government, but he found the shadow. The shadow is real.

The Moment I Need to Tell You About

It was 2008, and I was on the inside.

Not as a volunteer and not as a donor. I had been contracted as the Headquarters Network Architect and IT consultant for the Ron Paul presidential campaign. I was there because I believed in what Ron Paul represented — genuinely believed it. I had read his paper on the end of US Dollar hegemony, and it was one of the most rigorous, constitutionally-grounded analyses of American monetary policy I had encountered. His foreign policy positions matched what I thought a Republican had always been supposed to believe: non-interventionist, skeptical of empire, wary of the permanent warfare state. His understanding of the Constitution wasn’t talking-point deep. It was studied.

I took that contract because Ron Paul seemed like what a Republican candidate was supposed to be... and I wanted to be part of putting one of those on the national stage.

Then I watched the Republican Party eat him alive.

The 2008 GOP Convention was not a political event. It was a demonstration of power — who had it, how it worked, and what happened to people who challenged it. The backdoor dealing wasn’t rumor. I watched it. Ron Paul had delegates. He had organization. He had a constituency that had built something real from the ground up. And the party establishment — the same establishment that would hand us John McCain as the nominee — made sure none of that mattered.

What I remember most isn’t the public floor spectacle. It’s the quieter things. The credential maneuvers. The way votes that should have counted didn’t. The way Lew Moore — Paul’s own campaign manager — and others around the campaign found their way into the McCain orbit when the pressure came. (You can still read some of the drama from 2008 here.) The way loyalty, when tested by the party machine, turned out to be a more complicated thing than anyone had advertised.

I watched my party screw over one of its own. Methodically and without apology. In broad daylight.

I remember thinking: this isn’t a party that merely drifted. This is a party that chose to be this.

I’ve been a registered Republican my entire adult life. My father was a Republican. My mother was registered Independent — the only dissenter in the family, and even she never went Democrat. The party affiliation was something I inherited, and something I chose, and for most of my life those were the same thing.

The convention in 2008, for me, was the moment they stopped being the same thing.

That’s what this piece is about. It isn’t a hit on the party I’ve belonged to my whole life. It also isn’t a manifesto for switching teams. It’s a reckoning — the kind you owe yourself when you’ve been close enough to the machine to see how it actually runs, and you can no longer pretend what you saw was an anomaly.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline.

Let’s Start with What the Word Actually Meant

The Republican Party was born on March 20, 1854, in Ripon, Wisconsin.

It was not born as the party of low taxes and it was not born as the party of deregulation. It was not born as the party of Southern cultural conservatism, or evangelical Christianity, or America First nationalism, or neoconservative military intervention. It was born as a coalition of anti-slavery activists, former Whigs, Free Soilers, and — pay attention to this part — Northern Democrats, all united around a single position: the Kansas-Nebraska Act was wrong, and slavery could not be allowed to spread westward into the territories.

Their slogan: “Free Labor, Free Land, Free Men.”

They did not call for the immediate abolition of slavery — they knew they couldn’t win on that platform in 1854. They called for containment of it. The argument was partly moral and partly economic: the expansion of slave labor into the western territories was not just wrong, it was a direct threat to the livelihoods of free working men. Lincoln, the party’s first successful presidential candidate, made exactly that argument. The Republican Party of 1860 was, at its core, a party of working people who believed that economic and moral freedom were inseparable.

Six years after the party’s founding, it had elected a president who would preserve the Union.

Whatever the Republican Party is in 2026, it is not that. It’s not obviously opposed to that, but the distance between Ripon, Wisconsin in 1854 and Washington, D.C. in 2026 is not just geographic and temporal. It is philosophical.

The label stayed the same. Everything underneath it has been replaced, multiple times, by different things.

Eisenhower’s Version — The One My Father Probably Voted For

Before we get to the mutations, it’s worth chewing on what the party looked like at its mid-century peak, because a lot of Americans my age and older carry this version of Republicanism in their bones without fully naming it.

Dwight Eisenhower called his approach “Modern Republicanism.” It was fiscally cautious, internationally engaged, and notably un-hysterical about the domestic role of government. Eisenhower built the Interstate Highway System — a massive federal infrastructure program. He presided over the expansion of Social Security. In a 1954 private letter to his brother, he wrote:

“Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history.”

He was warning against something he considered fringe. Decades later, that “fringe” position became the party platform.

The Rockefeller Republicans — named for New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller — occupied a similar space. Moderate to liberal on domestic issues, hawkish on communism, broadly supportive of the New Deal’s social insurance framework. They were pro-NATO, pro-engagement, and comfortable with the idea that government had a legitimate role in managing a modern industrial economy.

By 1964, they were losing. Barry Goldwater ran for the Republican nomination and won it on a platform that would have horrified Eisenhower — explicitly opposing the Civil Rights Act (on libertarian grounds, he said) and calling for a more aggressive nuclear posture toward the Soviet Union. Goldwater lost the general election in a historic landslide: he carried only six states.

But Goldwater won something bigger than an election. He identified a constituency — a substantial bloc of voters, concentrated in the South and the Southwest, who wanted uncompromising conservatism. And a young actor named Ronald Reagan gave a nationally televised speech on Goldwater’s behalf in late October 1964 that was so compelling it launched a political career.

That speech was called “A Time for Choosing.”

The choice had already been made. The Rockefeller wing just didn’t know it yet.

The Reagan Revolution — And What It Actually Produced

Reagan won the presidency in 1980 by welding together three constituencies that had not previously been a single coalition:

Social conservatives — the Moral Majority, evangelical Christians, Catholics alarmed by the sexual revolution and Roe v. Wade.

Fiscal conservatives — supply-siders, business interests, people who genuinely believed that cutting top marginal tax rates from 70% to 28% would unleash economic growth.

Cold War hawks — people who believed Carter-era détente was weakness and that the Soviet Union needed to be confronted, not managed.

It worked. Reagan won 44 states in 1980, 49 in 1984. The coalition held.

What it produced in practice was more complicated. Reagan’s 1981 tax cuts were followed by multiple tax increases in subsequent years when the deficit exploded — a fact conveniently forgotten by later supply-siders. The federal government got larger under Reagan, not smaller. Defense spending increased dramatically while the deficit ballooned. The “small government” brand survived governing considerably differently from the brand.

I’m not saying Reagan was dishonest. I’m saying the gap between the label and the governing is a feature of this party’s history, not an exception.

But the Reagan coalition did accomplish one thing permanently: it completed the Southern realignment. Nixon had cracked the Solid South in 1968. Reagan cemented it in 1984. The party of Lincoln — founded by Northern abolitionists and Free Soilers in Wisconsin — had become the party of the American South. That is not a small irony. It is the kind of thing that should make any serious Republican stop and ask what exactly they’re attached to when they check that box.

The People Who Moved In — And Where They Came From

Here is where I need to tell you something that isn’t conspiracy theory. It’s history — documented, sourced, and in several cases, openly admitted by the people involved.

The neoconservative movement — the dominant intellectual force in the Republican Party from roughly 1980 through 2008 — was not founded by Republicans. It was founded primarily by former Trotskyist leftists who migrated rightward over two to three decades.

Irving Kristol is the central figure. He is widely called the “Godfather of Neoconservatism” and was the only major neoconservative who openly embraced the term. In his youth, he was a committed Trotskyist — a member of the Young People’s Socialist League at City College of New York in the late 1930s, part of the famous anti-Stalinist Alcove No. 1. He broke from the left slowly: first disillusioned with Stalinism, then with 1960s New Left radicalism, then — by the 1970s — committing what he called “the unthinkable”: supporting the Republican Party.

Kristol himself defined a neoconservative as “a liberal who has been mugged by reality.”

Norman Podhoretz, editor of Commentary magazine for 35 years and a man described as “the conductor of the neocon orchestra,” followed a similar arc — liberal, then disillusioned with the 1960s left, then neoconservative. He died in December 2025 at 95, and his obituaries all noted the same trajectory: young New York liberal intellectual turned hard-right hawk over the course of a decade.

James Burnham. Sydney Hook. Both Trotskyites before turning right. The pattern is not incidental.

The term “neoconservative” was coined in 1973 by democratic socialist Michael Harrington — as an insult. He meant: these are people who used to be on our side, and they’ve betrayed the left for the right. The neoconservatives adopted the label anyway.

I contend that what happened next — the integration of neoconservative foreign policy thinking into the Republican mainstream — was the most consequential mutation the party has undergone since the Southern realignment. Not because neoconservatism is necessarily wrong in every particular, but because the original Republican tradition on foreign policy was explicitly non-interventionist. The Old Right — Robert Taft, the original conservative movement — was deeply suspicious of foreign entanglements, international institutions, and the kind of American empire-building that neoconservatism would later embrace as “exceptionalism.”

The Iraq War was the full expression of neoconservative foreign policy inside a Republican administration. The architects — Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld — had been signatories to the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), a think tank founded in 1997 by William Kristol (Irving’s son) and Robert Kagan. Of PNAC’s 25 founding signatories, 10 went on to serve in the Bush administration. In 1998, they had written an open letter to President Clinton calling for unilateral military action against Iraq… THREE YEARS BEFORE 9/11.

When 9/11 provided the political opening, PNAC members advocated for the Iraq invasion regardless of any demonstrated link between Iraq and the attacks. The war that followed cost the United States over $2 trillion and more than 4,400 American lives, destabilized an entire region, and produced no democracy and no weapons of mass destruction.

That was a Republican war built on a Republican foreign policy platform. That platform had been installed in the Republican Party by people who had started their political lives as Trotskyist leftists.

(Take a moment and let that sink in a bit.)

The Irving Kristol story, the PNAC blueprint, the documented migration of ideas from the socialist left into the Republican mainstream via the neoconservative movement, deserves its own piece. It’s coming. For now: know that the “Republican foreign policy” you’ve been hearing about since 2001 was not the foreign policy Robert Taft or Barry Goldwater or even Ronald Reagan would have recognized as theirs.

The label stayed the same. The contents changed.

The Grassroots Rebelled — Against Themselves

Here’s the part of the story that gets lost in the retelling: the Tea Party was Republicans rebelling against Republican governance.

In 2009, the grassroots conservative movement rose up — genuinely and organically — against government spending, bank bailouts, and federal overreach. The immediate trigger was Obama’s stimulus bill. But TARP — the bank bailout that became a rallying symbol — was signed by George W. Bush. Medicare Part D, the prescription drug expansion that added $549 billion to the federal debt over its first decade, was a Bush Republican program. Two unfunded wars were Republican wars.

The Tea Party had every right to be angry. The problem is that much of what it was angry about had been done by the party it was trying to reclaim.

By 2010, the movement had helped sweep Republicans into control of the House. It had primary-challenged and defeated establishment Republican incumbents who had drifted from fiscal conservatism. It had, in a real sense, tried to restore the label to something recognizable.

And then it got absorbed, redirected, and eventually superseded — first by the 2012 Romney campaign, which the base never loved, and then by something larger and louder that arrived in 2015.

The MAGA Question

I’m going to say something careful here, because this is where the conversation gets most charged.

Donald Trump did something in 2016 that no establishment Republican had been willing to do: he named, explicitly and publicly, that the neoconservative foreign policy of the Bush years was a catastrophic failure. He called the Iraq War a mistake. He criticized free trade orthodoxy that had been devastatingly felt in working-class communities. He ran against the Republican establishment as much as the Democratic one — and he won a Republican primary by doing it.

Whatever you think of him personally — and I have my own views, which aren’t the point of this piece — that is a significant political fact. The Republican base in 2016 voted against its own party’s foreign policy consensus. That tells you something about how far that consensus had drifted from where the base actually was.

By March 2026, 60% of Republicans identify as MAGA. The movement that started as an outsider disruption is now the party’s dominant faction. The non-MAGA Republicans — the Liz Cheney wing, the Bill Kristol wing (yes, Irving’s son, who now supports Democrats in presidential elections) — have either left the party, gone quiet, or positioned themselves as the “resistance” within it.

I want you to notice what that means for the label. Liz Cheney and Marjorie Taylor Greene cannot both be “Republicans” in any meaningful ideological sense. They share a registration and they share a party label. Beyond that, they represent worldviews so different that describing them with the same word has become almost meaningless.

The Republican Party of 2026 contains, simultaneously:

• Old-guard fiscal conservatives who believe in free trade, balanced budgets, and institutional norms

• Neoconservative remnants who believe in American military primacy abroad

• Religious conservatives who prioritize abortion, religious liberty, and traditional social structures

• Libertarian-leaning individualists in the Ron Paul tradition

• Populist nationalists who want immigration restriction, manufacturing revival, and America First foreign policy

• And a vanishingly small number of Eisenhower-style moderates who accept a basic social safety net and believe government can sometimes do things well

These people do not agree with each other, yet they share a voter registration card.

What This Means for Those of Us Holding the Same Card

I am still a registered Republican.

I’m not leaving. It isn’t because the party has earned my loyalty on every issue — it hasn’t, and the history in this article should make that clear. It is because the alternative isn’t obviously better, and because labels, even broken ones, have meaning that doesn’t disappear just because the contents have shifted.

What I am doing is holding the label honestly — which means knowing what it has meant, what it has been used to justify, who has moved into the house and rearranged the furniture, and what I actually believe underneath the party registration.

Here’s what I actually believe, and what I think a lot of registered Republicans believe, regardless of which faction they’ve landed in:

Government that governs least, governs best — in the tradition of Jefferson and Madison, not as a slogan for corporate deregulation.

Foreign policy rooted in American interest, not ideological nation-building projects that benefit think tanks and defense contractors and cost the lives of the people who actually fight them.

Fiscal responsibility as a genuine commitment, not a talking point deployed against Democratic spending while Republican spending is explained away.

The right to be left alone — in your business, your home, your church, your choices — as a foundational value, not a bumper sticker.

Those beliefs are Republican. They’re also, in most of their particulars, not particularly well-represented by the actual Republican Party of 2026.

Please understand — that’s not a reason to despair. It’s a reason to think.

Final Thoughts

The Republican Party has survived the Civil War, the Progressive Era, the New Deal, the Southern realignment, the Reagan Revolution, the neoconservative capture, the Tea Party, and the Trump realignment. Through all of it, the label has persisted. The word “Republican” has remained on voter registration cards across the country, and on banners at conventions, and on the masthead of a party apparatus that has been populated, in each era, by people with very different ideas about what the word should mean.

That is not a fatal flaw. Every institution that survives long enough accumulates this kind of layered complexity. The Catholic Church has been through more revisions than the Republican Party, and it is still recognizably the Catholic Church.

But it does mean something important for those of us who carry the card: we are not obligated to let anyone else define what the label means. The neoconservatives didn’t ask our permission when they moved in. The populist nationalists didn’t hold a referendum. The party has been shaped, repeatedly and significantly, by organized groups with clear agendas — and the mass of ordinary registered Republicans has largely watched it happen from the outside.

It is March 14, 1989.

Mark James Kilroy is a 21-year-old pre-med student from the University of Texas at Austin. He is in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico on spring break with friends, walking a crowded street a few hundred yards from the US border. It is a normal thing for Texas college students to do. He was last seen that night at approximately 2 a.m.

He was not seen again.

When his remains were found six weeks later — on April 11, 1989, at a ranch called Rancho Santa Elena, twelve miles outside Matamoros — investigators discovered that he had been tortured and killed as part of a ritual. The man who ordered his death was Adolfo de Jesús Constanzo, a Cuban-American cult leader who ran a narcosatanic operation that combined drug trafficking with Palo-derived ritual sacrifice. Constanzo and his followers believed that human sacrifice granted them immunity from law enforcement. They had killed at least fourteen people using the same methodology, burying bodies on the ranch in a series of shallow graves. Constanzo had specifically wanted an American university student for a particular ritual. Mark Kilroy fit the criteria.

When police closed in on Constanzo’s Mexico City hideout weeks later, Constanzo ordered one of his followers to kill him with a machine gun.

I moved to Waco, Texas around that time. The Matamoros story was enormous in central Texas — in the way that news only gets enormous when geography makes it personal. A college student. Spring break. A border town that thousands of Texas kids visited every year. What was found at that ranch.

It was real. Every part of it. The torture was real. The ritual motive was real. The bodies were real.

I want you to hold that alongside everything that follows.

I Was There for the Panic — Both Kinds

I’m a Gen Xer. I was the target demographic for the Satanic Panic.

I went through school in the 1980s, which means I sat through the D&D warnings and the heavy metal hearings and the church bulletins about occult recruitment, and the news cycles about daycare workers doing unspeakable things to children in underground tunnels. I had family members who were afraid to let their kids watch certain cartoons. I knew people who burned their record collections.

I also knew, somewhere underneath all of it, that something wasn’t quite adding up. That the fear was real but the object of the fear kept shifting. That the people doing the warning were sometimes selling something. That the machinery generating accusations was moving faster than the evidence could.

Then… Matamoros happened, and the thing underneath the panic turned out to be real after all — just not in the direction everyone was looking.

That’s the problem with the Machine. It’s not that it’s always wrong. It’s that when it’s wrong, it’s expensively, catastrophically, innocence-destroyingly wrong — and it makes it harder to see the real thing when the real thing arrives.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline. (I say that a lot... for a reason.)

Before the Panic — The Source Code Is Old

Before we get to the 1980s, we need to go back a thousand years. Because the machinery the Satanic Panic ran on is not new. It’s ancient.

The blood libel is the false accusation that Jews ritually sacrificed Christian children at Passover to obtain blood for unleavened bread. The earliest distinct Western instance dates to 12th-century England — a boy named William of Norwich was murdered, and local Jews were blamed. Historians trace antecedents even further: to Apion, a Greek-Alexandrian Sophist writing in the 2nd century BCE, who described a Greek child being prepared for sacrifice at the Temple in Jerusalem. The Jewish historian Josephus refuted it, but Apion didn’t stop writing.

The myth spread across medieval Europe in the aftermath of the First Crusade, institutionally reinforced by the Fourth Lateran Council’s mandates for segregation of Christian and Jewish communities. From the 12th century to the 21st, the accusation of Jewish ritual child murder was used as justification for persecution, massacre, and pogrom. Every single accusation was false. The massacres, though, were real.

I am raising the blood libel because it is not a historical footnote. It is the template. Powerful accusation about child harm with no verifiable evidence. Destruction of the accused. Occasionally — as with Matamoros — genuine horror lurking somewhere in the vicinity, which makes the accusation feel retroactively validated even when it hit the wrong targets.

The machinery is old. The Satanic Panic of the 1980s was running that same algorithm on a new dataset. You need to understand that before you can understand anything else about this story.

Michelle Remembers — Where the Mythology Was Written

In 1980, a Canadian psychiatrist named Lawrence Pazder and his patient (and eventual wife) Michelle Smith published a book called Michelle Remembers.

The book claimed to be Michelle’s true account of childhood ritual abuse at the hands of a Satanic cult — abuse that she had completely forgotten and only “recovered” during fourteen months of hypnotic regression therapy with Pazder. The recovered memories were vivid: torture, cages, sexual assault, human sacrifice, blood and body parts of murdered infants rubbed on her skin.

Pazder had been treating Smith for depression following a miscarriage. Over more than a year of sessions, Smith entered hypnotic trances and produced — progressively, under guidance — an elaborate narrative of Satanic abuse. Pazder coined a new clinical phrase to describe what he believed he was witnessing: “satanic ritual abuse.” The phrase did not exist in clinical literature before this book.

Michelle Remembers sold millions of copies. No corroborating evidence for any of it was ever found. Smith’s own father denied the allegations when interviewed by a Canadian journalist in October 1980. Investigators who examined the claims described them as drawn primarily from pop culture and fiction.

Other therapists — reading the book as a clinical guide — began applying Pazder’s techniques. Guided imagery. Hypnotic regression. Repetitive questioning. Suggestion. They used Michelle Remembers as a diagnostic checklist: Does your patient show these symptoms? Are they having nightmares? Do they have gaps in childhood memory? They may be a survivor who hasn’t yet remembered.

The book that invented the Satanic Panic template was built on false memories, produced by a therapist who married his patient, and sold to an audience that wanted — desperately wanted — the threat to be real. Scholars are now nearly unanimous: Michelle Remembers was the spark. Everything that followed ran on the fuel it ignited.

The Amplifiers — Church, D&D, and the Evangelical Fraud

The panic didn’t spread only through therapy. It had institutional amplifiers.

The church was the most powerful one. In evangelical circles, the fear of occult infiltration was not new — it had roots going back to revivals, to anti-Masonic movements, to Pentecostal teaching on demonic influence. What Michelle Remembers did was give the fear a specific, terrifying, contemporary face. Satanists were not an abstraction; they were in your community, running daycares, recruiting through music and games.

Which is where Mike Warnke arrives. In 1972, Warnke published The Satan Seller — a memoir claiming to describe his years as a Satanic High Priest commanding a coven of 1,500 people, before his conversion to Christianity. The book sold over three million copies and made Warnke a fixture on the evangelical speaking circuit for two decades. Church youth groups. Christian radio. Concerts. He was the inside witness, the man who had been there, and he was warning your children.

In 1991, Cornerstone magazine — a Christian publication — launched a serious investigation. Reporters interviewed over 100 of Warnke’s personal friends and acquaintances and examined his ministry’s tax records. Nothing held up. Chronology and geography made the core claims impossible. Basic facts about his alleged coven didn’t survive contact with people who actually knew him at the time he claimed to be running it. As Warnke responded to basic questions with evasion, defensive anger, and more easily disproved lies, the investigation unraveled the entire fraud. The IRS revoked his charitable status. Word Records suspended sales of his materials.

Three million copies. Two decades of speaking tours. An entire generation of evangelical Christians whose understanding of Satanism was shaped by a man who fabricated the whole thing.

Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons was blamed for teenage suicides. Heavy metal was accused of embedding subliminal Satanic messages in its tracks. The Parents Music Resource Center, founded in 1985 by Tipper Gore and other “Washington Wives,” pressured record labels into warning labels. Senate hearings were held. DARE programs in schools incorporated warnings about occult recruitment alongside drug resistance messaging — officers in uniform telling children that Satanists were actively trying to recruit them through music and games.

The fear was ambient. It was institutional. It was on television and in the church bulletin and being delivered in schools by authority figures in uniform.

You didn’t have to go looking for it… it found you.

McMartin — The Machine at Full Speed

In August 1983, a mother in Manhattan Beach, California reported to police that her son had been sexually abused by a teacher at the McMartin Preschool. She was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. She died of alcohol-related liver disease in 1986, before the trial concluded.

But before she died, the machine was already running.

Police sent a letter to 200 McMartin families asking them to question their children about possible abuse by named staff members. That letter was the accelerant. Social workers and investigators began interviewing children using techniques that have since been thoroughly discredited: leading questions, rewards for desired answers, repetition until the expected response was produced, and validation of increasingly elaborate stories.

What the children produced, over months of such sessions: underground tunnels. Satanic rituals. Animal sacrifice. Sexual abuse by staff, by neighbors, by celebrities — names that could not possibly have been at the school, invoked in stories that had grown to encompass the entire surrounding community.

Seven members of the McMartin family were charged. The pretrial investigation alone ran from 1984 to 1987. The trials ran from 1987 to 1990.

No convictions. All charges dropped.

The government spent $15 million and seven years on the longest and most expensive criminal trial in American history, and it produced nothing — because there was nothing to find. Subsequent excavation of the school property found no underground tunnels.

The children who testified were not lying in the conventional sense. They were telling stories that months of guided, suggestive, therapeutic interrogation had caused them to experience as memories. The therapy was the mechanism. The therapists created the survivors.

In my professional hypnotherapy training, we were taught that hypnotically-produced testimony is not admissible in court — a legal standard shaped in part by the McMartin case and the broader scientific reckoning over false memory research in the 1980s and 1990s. - Matthew

McMartin was not isolated. Across the 1980s and 1990s, over 12,000 unsubstantiated cases of Satanic ritual abuse were prosecuted in North America. The Amiraults at Fells Acres in Massachusetts. The Kellers in Texas — Dan and Fran Keller, who spent 21 years in prison for a crime a judge later determined they likely did not commit. The Little Rascals case in North Carolina, where seven adults were charged with abusing 90 children and allegations included children being thrown overboard to sharks. Of 919 exonerations for sexual crimes since 1989, 57 have been categorized as child sex abuse hysteria cases.

Those are not the people who were saved. Those are the ones we know about who were wrongly convicted. The number who were accused, lost jobs, lost families, lost their standing in communities — that number is immeasurable.

West Memphis, Arkansas — 1993

By 1993, the McMartin acquittals had slowed the institutional panic, but it had not died. It had migrated from the coastal cities into the heartland.

In West Memphis, Arkansas, on May 5, 1993, three eight-year-old boys — Steve Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers — were found murdered in a drainage ditch. The investigation moved quickly to three local teenagers: Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. The evidence against them consisted primarily of: they were different. Echols wore black. He had once mentioned Wicca. He listened to heavy metal.

After approximately twelve hours of interrogation — most of it unrecorded, with Misskelley absent a parent or attorney for the bulk of the session — Jessie Misskelley, who has an IQ of 72, confessed. His confession was riddled with factual errors inconsistent with the crime scene. It was the only evidence that mattered.

The prosecution argued the murders were part of a Satanic ritual. No physical evidence linking any of the three to the crime scene was presented at trial.

Damien Echols was sentenced to death. Baldwin and Misskelley received life sentences.

In 2007, DNA testing excluded all three from every piece of crime scene evidence tested, and identified DNA from an unidentified male. In 2011, after 18 years in prison — Echols on death row — all three were released through Alford pleas, a legal mechanism that allows defendants to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that sufficient evidence for conviction exists.

They are not formally exonerated. The actual killer has never been identified.

Back to Matamoros — Why It Matters That One Was Real

I keep coming back to Mark Kilroy.

Here is the complicated truth that the Satanic Panic story usually sidesteps: the fear was not entirely wrong. Adolfo Constanzo was real. The ritual murders were real. The fourteen bodies at Rancho Santa Elena were real. The belief that human sacrifice provided supernatural protection was the operational theory of a functioning drug cartel.

The panic was not wrong that such things exist. It was wrong about where they were, who was doing them, and — most consequentially — it built a machinery for identifying perpetrators that destroyed innocent people while the actual perpetrators operated freely.

Constanzo was not a daycare worker. He was not hiding in the suburbs. He was running a narcotics organization across the US-Mexico border, killing people with drug trafficking resources and cartel cover. The machinery of the Satanic Panic — recovered memory therapy, coercive child interviews, community hysteria, conviction on the basis of “difference” — could not have found him. It wasn’t even designed to find him.

I contend that the machinery was never designed to find the actual threat. It was designed to generate the sensation of threat management… and those are very different things.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline.

Jeffrey Epstein — The Real Thing, Documented

In 2001, Jeffrey Epstein began trafficking and sexually abusing underage girls at his private island, Little Saint James, in the US Virgin Islands. We know this because it is in the civil lawsuit filed by the USVI government in 2020. The trafficking continued until his 2019 arrest.

The facts on record:

In 2007, federal prosecutors in the Southern District of Florida had prepared a draft indictment carrying 60 counts against Epstein. US Attorney Alexander Acosta signed a non-prosecution agreement that granted immunity to Epstein, four named co-conspirators, and “any potential co-conspirators.” Epstein pleaded to state charges — solicitation of prostitution, one count involving a minor — and received 18 months in a minimum-security facility with 12 hours of daily work release. The DOJ later found that Acosta’s office had exercised “poor judgment” and had specifically failed to notify Epstein’s victims of the NPA.

He registered as a sex offender. He continued hosting heads of state, financiers, scientists, and royalty at his properties.

In 2019, he was arrested again on federal sex trafficking charges. On August 10, 2019, he died in federal custody. Official ruling: suicide by hanging. His own attorneys dispute the finding. Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, hired by the Epstein family, concluded the injuries were more consistent with homicide.

Ghislaine Maxwell — his longtime associate and alleged trafficking facilitator — was convicted of sex trafficking in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years.

Under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed by President Trump in November 2025, the DOJ released over 3 million documents, 2,000 videos, and 180,000 images through early 2026. As of July 2026, courts are still ordering the DOJ to unredact names from emails in the files discussing women in Epstein’s network.

What those files have not produced, thus far: the names and accountability for the men who used his network and have not been charged.

The island building that viral internet culture called the “temple” — documented in the 2026 releases — was furnished by Epstein as a personal “mosque,” complete with tapestries imported from a mosque in Uzbekistan and objects from Islam’s holiest sites, per a New York Times report. No documented evidence of Satanic or occult ritual use has been found. The conspiratorial overlay was wrong about the specifics. The documented crime was real enough without it.

Adrenochrome — Theory, Chemistry, and What We Can Say

Adrenochrome is a real compound. It is an oxidation product of adrenaline (epinephrine). It has been synthesizable since at least 1952 and is available commercially from biotech suppliers. It has no confirmed psychedelic properties. It has no known rejuvenating effects. None of the properties attributed to it by the conspiracy theory exist in the documented chemistry.

The fictional version originated in Hunter S. Thompson’s 1971 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, where a character claims the compound can only be harvested from a living human body and produces intense psychedelic effects. This was fictional. Director Terry Gilliam confirmed it in the DVD commentary of his film adaptation.

The QAnon iteration, emerging from October 2017, fused Thompson’s fictional narrative with historical blood libel tropes and the real documented trafficking network that Epstein represented, producing the claim that global elites were harvesting adrenochrome from the blood of terrified children.

What can we say?

There is no documented evidence of adrenochrome harvesting from children.

There IS documented evidence of a global trafficking network involving powerful men — Epstein’s network is real, its full scope is unknown, and the people it served are not yet fully identified. The DOJ is still, as of this writing, being court-ordered to release names.

I am not claiming that adrenochrome harvesting is occurring. (I do not have evidence to support that claim, and the chemistry makes the specific mechanism implausible.)

What I am observing is this: the pattern is familiar. Real crime — documented, serious, involving children — exists. Layered on top of that real crime is a theory that exceeds the documented evidence in ways that are difficult to verify and easy to dismiss… and the effect of the unfalsifiable overlay is to make it easier to dismiss everything — including what is proven.

That is not an accident. That is the machine’s design. The machine doesn’t need to plant the adrenochrome theory deliberately. It just needs the theory to exist, because as long as it exists, skeptics can point to it as evidence that all concern about elite trafficking networks is conspiracy thinking.

The wolves are real, but the machine that manages how we talk about wolves has its own agenda.

What This Means for People Who Are Paying Attention

A generation was shaped by the Satanic Panic. It shaped how we think about child safety, about institutional authority, about the trustworthiness of experts, about what the church is for and when it fails. Here is what I believe a clear-eyed reading of that history requires:

The machinery that generates false accusations is the same machinery that discredits real ones. Recovered memory therapy produced false survivors. The same therapeutic and institutional dynamics that manufactured McMartin created the cultural conditions in which actual abuse — documented, systemic, Epstein-scale — could be dismissed as conspiracy thinking for two decades.

The church’s fear was legitimate; the church’s expertise was not. The church was right that children are targeted, that predatory networks exist, that the powerful protect each other. The church was wrong to rely on Mike Warnke’s fabricated testimony, on recovered memory therapists, on Satanic templates that pointed in the wrong direction. Three million copies of a fraudulent memoir is not a small failure.

Innocent people paid with decades of their lives. Dan and Fran Keller gave 21 years. Damien Echols sat on death row. Gerald Amirault served 18 years. The machine’s errors were not abstractions — they had real names and families and futures that were taken from them.

The documented facts about Epstein are serious enough without the theory. A 60-count federal indictment was turned into a plea deal for 18 months. A man who died in federal custody under disputed circumstances. Three million documents, still being released, still being redacted. These facts do not require adrenochrome to be disturbing. They require only attention.

What we should actually be building: communities that take child safety seriously without relying on institutional panic cycles; the ability to distinguish documented evidence from unfalsifiable theory; the memory of how this went wrong before, so we can recognize the machine when it spins up again.

Final Thoughts

The Satanic Panic was a real fear that generated false evidence, destroyed innocent lives, and failed to find the actual predators who were operating in plain sight. The predators it did find — Constanzo, Epstein, the traffickers the Epstein files are still slowly naming — were not found by the panic. They were found despite it, after it, around it, or by people willing to look at documented evidence rather than recovered memories.

I don’t know the full extent of what the Epstein network was and who it served. I don’t know what is in the unredacted portions of 3 million documents. I don’t know whether the trafficking networks that we know exist have characteristics that would explain the resilience of the adrenochrome theory among people who encounter evidence of trafficking firsthand. (I hold all of that open to possibility.)

What I know is this: the machine has a track record. The machine cried wolf about daycares in Manhattan Beach. The machine cried wolf about D&D and Ozzy Osbourne. The machine manufactured survivors in therapist’s offices and extracted confessions from children. During all of that — while the machine was fully operational, generating headlines and filling prisons with innocent people — Mark Kilroy was walking down a street in Matamoros, and Adolfo Constanzo was waiting.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline.

Hold that. Look downstream. Learn to tell the difference between the machine and the evidence.

It’s London in December of 1902. The home of Richard Burdon Haldane — lawyer, philosopher, Liberal politician — somewhere in the city’s better postcodes.

Dinner is served. Around the table are, among others: Sir Edward Grey, the Liberal politician who will shortly become Britain’s longest-serving Foreign Secretary. Halford Mackinder, a geographer who will present a paper to the Royal Geographical Society in two months that still shapes how NATO plans its strategy. Picture This

It’s 1964 and a German philosopher named Herbert Marcuse publishes a book called One-Dimensional Man. It is dense, it is academic, and it lands with almost no impact. Sales are modest, the mainstream reviews are polite, and nobody’s burning anything down over it.

Then 1966 comes with the paperback edition. Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) adds it to their political education curriculum and campus radicals from Berkeley to Berlin start reading it in study groups.

Then 1968. Paris in May. The Sorbonne occupied. Students battling riot police in the streets. “Marx, Mao, Marcuse” — the graffiti appears on university walls across Europe. In Chicago, demonstrators and police fight in the streets outside the Democratic National Convention. The book hadn’t changed. The world had been prepared for it.

It is October 18, 2019.

In a hotel conference room in New York City, fifteen senior leaders from government, public health, and international business are three hours into a tabletop pandemic exercise. The organizing partners are the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, the World Economic Forum, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The scenario is a novel coronavirus — they’re calling it CAPS, Coronavirus Associated Pulmonary Syndrome — that has jumped from pigs to humans, spreads easily through respiratory droplets, and has, in their simulation, killed sixty-five million people. The exercise is called Event 201. The recommendations emerging from the table include, among other things, a global body to coordinate pandemic messaging and manage public “misinformation.”

On the same day, in Wuhan, China, 9,308 athletes from 109 countries begin arriving for the Military World Games — the military’s version of the Olympics. They will spend ten days competing in 329 events across 27 sports, sharing hotels, dining facilities, and venues throughout the city. They will return to their home countries without being screened for illness. Within weeks, athletes from France, Germany, Italy, and Luxembourg will tell their doctors and their governments that they came home from Wuhan sick with something they couldn’t name. Italy, France, Brazil, and Sweden will all confirm SARS-CoV-2 within their borders by November and December 2019 — weeks before the official outbreak announcement.

Two things happened on October 18, 2019. Nobody says they’re connected and nobody has seriously investigated whether they are.

The game began before anyone announced there was a game.

I’ve Been in the Room When People Stop Thinking Critically

I want to tell you something about my practice before I show you the rest of this.

I’m a hypnotherapist in my post-techie life. I’ve spent most of my professional life in that capacity studying what happens when the critical faculty — the part of the mind that evaluates, questions, and resists — gets bypassed. In clinical settings, I use that bypass to help people heal: to release old patterns, to interrupt cycles of fear and avoidance, and to reframe the stories that are running their lives beneath the surface.

What I watched unfold between 2020 and 2023 I recognized... clinically.

Not metaphorically. Clinically.

Fear induction is the gateway to suggestibility. When the emotional arousal level rises high enough, critical evaluation drops. That’s not a political opinion — it’s a measurable neurological phenomenon. In March 2020, the UK government’s own scientific advisory subcommittee, SPI-B, put it in writing: “The perceived level of personal threat needs to be increased... using hard-hitting emotional messaging.” That sentence came from their meeting minutes dated March 22, 2020 — three days before the first UK lockdown. Members of that same group later admitted they had used what they called “unethical” and “totalitarian” methods. Some said they were “stunned by the weaponization of behavioural psychology.” [sic]

That’s not a leak and it’s not a conspiracy theory. That’s a real government document, and the people who wrote it said it themselves.

I recognize an induction when I see one and what I saw was not an accident.

The Turducken

A turducken is a chicken stuffed inside a duck, stuffed inside a turkey. It is all three things at once, and you cannot pull them apart once they are assembled. You receive it as a single dish.

I want to offer you the turducken as the only honest framework for what happened between 2019 and 2023, because every other framework I’ve encountered insists on giving the whole thing one name… and the whole thing doesn’t have one name.

The spectrum runs, roughly, like this:

No virus really exists. Held by researchers including Dr. Stefan Lanka and others in what’s called terrain theory. The position: the entire event was constructed from existing respiratory illness clusters and fraudulent PCR testing. This is not mainstream science, but it also has not been thoroughly refuted. It has been “dismissed”.

Accidental lab release, covered up. Now the most institutionally credible non-official position: SARS-CoV-2 emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology through a research accident, and the lab origin was suppressed because of embarrassing NIH funding connections. By 2023, the FBI, the Department of Energy, and a House committee had all concluded this was the most likely origin. The suppression is also documented through FOIA emails.

Deliberate release, test run for compliance. The lockdowns, the mask reversals, and the “two weeks” that became two years — not failures of pandemic management, but calibration events in a compliance-engineering study at global scale.

The surveillance build. Whether the virus was natural or engineered or accidental, the pandemic provided the justification to construct digital identity and global health certification infrastructure that could not have been built during peacetime without mass public resistance. The virus was the justification, and the passport was the product.

I am not claiming to know which of these is true. I contend that the honest answer is that more than one of them may be true simultaneously — layered inside each other and assembled before serving.

That’s the turducken.

What Is an ARG, and Why Does It Matter?

An Alternate Reality Game is a specific kind of designed narrative experience. Its defining features:

It is run by puppetmasters — a small group of creators who design the story, control the information environment, and respond in real time to how the audience reacts. The puppetmasters always hold the strings.

It tells its story across multiple platforms simultaneously — websites, media, real-world events, institutions, voices of authority — so that no single venue carries the whole picture. Participants have to cross-reference sources to construct the truth.

It deliberately leaves white space — gaps in the official account that players rush to fill with their own analysis, speculation, and “research,” most of which leads nowhere near the actual story. The conspiracy theories are part of the design. They keep investigators busy in the wrong rooms.

The cardinal rule is called TINAG: This Is Not a Game. The boundary between the story and reality is deliberately blurred and participants believe what’s happening is real — because, in some important sense, it is.

Here’s the thing about ARGs that most people miss: the real-world consequences are real. The game has casualties.

Now: here’s what we know about military ARG development.

The US Army runs its primary PSYOP operations through the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg. Their stated mission: deploy anywhere on short notice, conduct psychological operations in support of Unified Commanders, or “other government agencies as directed by the National Command Authority.” Their capabilities include propaganda, product development, media production, and information dissemination at strategic, operational, and tactical levels.

The US Navy created the Information Warfare Community in 2009 — formally known then as the “Information Dominance Corps.” It encompasses Naval Information Forces and multiple Navy Information Operations Commands. The IWC is specifically structured around information dominance — the capacity to control the information environment in which an adversary operates. That’s ARG architecture at strategic scale.

DARPA — the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency — launched the Narrative Networks program in 2011 with a budget of $42 million over three years. Their stated goal: “advancing narrative analysis and neuroscience so as to create new narrative influence sensors, doubling status quo capacity to forecast narrative influence.” The program sought to understand how narratives “shape emotions, cue heuristics and biases in judgment, and influence group distinctions” — and then to apply that understanding “in international security contexts.”

DARPA had also, years earlier, sponsored the first-ever military ARG, created by BBN Technologies and ARG designer Dave Szulborski — running 124 participants through a simulated tsunami scenario that blurred the line between the exercise and their real environment.

DoD policy says US PSYOP forces are “not to target US citizens at any time, in any location globally, under any circumstances.” I want to note that on record. I also want to note that the Air Force was subsequently found running a program to create false identities on social media platforms. Which the ACLU brought to Congress.

They told you. Sort of… and then they didn’t.

The Timeline You Were Never Meant to Read in Order

Let me show you this as a timeline, because in the proper order is the only way the shape becomes visible.

October 2017 — Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security releases a self-guided pandemic exercise scenario. The pathogen: a novel coronavirus, named SPARS-CoV. Origin: Asia. Spread: respiratory droplets. The response in the scenario includes a fast-tracked vaccine and a repurposed drug. The exercise is called the SPARS 2025 Pandemic.

October 18, 2019 — Same institution, new exercise: Event 201. Different partners this time: the World Economic Forum and the Gates Foundation join. Same pathogen category: novel coronavirus. Sixty-five million dead in the simulation. On the same day, Wuhan receives the world’s military athletes.

November–December 2019 — Four countries with delegations at the Wuhan Military Games — Italy, France, Brazil, Sweden — confirm SARS-CoV-2 within their borders. Nearly 300 US military personnel who attended the games return to 219 home bases across 25 states without COVID screening. No investigation is conducted. (To this day, none has been.)

January 2020 — Dr. Fauci is privately warned of the possibility that COVID-19 leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and that it may have been intentionally manipulated. Publicly, he says: “People should not be walking around with masks.”

March 22, 2020 — The SPI-B minutes. “The perceived level of personal threat needs to be increased... using hard-hitting emotional messaging.” Three days before the UK’s first lockdown.

March 2020 — “Two weeks to flatten the curve.“ A specific, manageable, temporary ask. Pennsylvania’s lockdown doesn’t end until July. American schools stay closed, in some places, for two years. The stated objective — managing hospital capacity — shifts, without public announcement, to eliminating the virus entirely. Nobody holds a press conference to explain the change.

April 3, 2020 — CDC reverses mask guidance. “Everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they have to go out in public.” Same Fauci, same agency, twenty-six days later.

April 2020 — Peter Daszak of EcoHealth Alliance — the organization that had been funneling NIAID money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology for bat coronavirus research since 2014 — emails Dr. Fauci to thank him for “publicly standing up and stating that the scientific evidence supports a natural origin for COVID-19 from a bat-to-human spillover, not a lab release.” The man whose funding connection to the Wuhan lab gave him a financial interest in the lab-origin question thanked the government official responsible for investigating origins for ruling out the lab.

(Read that, again, please.)

July 2020 — Klaus Schwab and the World Economic Forum publish “COVID-19: The Great Reset.” Within weeks, the phrase “Build Back Better” — nowhere in mainstream political discourse before mid-2020 — is adopted simultaneously by: Joe Biden, Boris Johnson, Mark Rutte, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, and others. No coordination is announced and no explanation is offered for the simultaneous appearance of identical language across multiple governments.

In an ARG, that’s called a synchronization event.

October 8, 2020 — NIH Director Francis Collins emails Anthony Fauci. Three professors from Harvard, Oxford, and Stanford — Martin Kulldorff, Sunetra Gupta, and Jay Bhattacharya — have published the Great Barrington Declaration, calling for focused protection of high-risk individuals rather than blanket lockdowns. More than 850,000 people will ultimately sign it. Collins writes: “There needs to be a quick and devastating published takedown of its premises.” He calls three tenured professors at three of the world’s most prestigious institutions “fringe epidemiologists.“

FOIA request happened… it’s all on the record.

2021–2022 — WHO contracts Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems to build a global vaccine passport system linking every person on the planet to a QR code digital ID. WHO launches its Global Digital Health Certification Network — explicitly described as “the first building block of digital public health infrastructure.” Analysts observing the rollout note that vaccine passports are not temporary — they’re “one example of how the pandemic is accelerating the rollout of digital identity infrastructure.” It was the first building block with more blocks planned.

2022–2026 — The lab leak hypothesis, labeled a conspiracy theory in 2020, banned from social media platforms, and used to discredit scientists — becomes, official-ish: FBI Director Wray calls it “most likely” (February 2023). The Department of Energy agrees and a House committee concludes COVID-19 came from a lab leak. In June 2026, Senator Rand Paul releases a timeline of Fauci’s contacts with US intelligence agencies going back years.

The fringe has been vindicated, yet no one has been held accountable. No explanation has been offered for why the “conspiracy theory” was the truth.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline.

What This Means If You Are Awake to It

The turducken doesn’t require you to decide which layer is the real one. It requires you to hold all the layers simultaneously and refuse to accept the single-dish presentation.

Here is what I believe the prepared, thinking person takes away from this:

The “official story” has a documented track record of deliberate revision. Masks went from “don’t wear them” to “everyone must” in only twenty-six days. The lab leak went from “conspiracy theory” to “most likely” in three years. If the story moved once, it can move again.

The behavioral engineering was admitted. The SPI-B minutes exist and the scientists called their own methods “unethical” and “totalitarian.” This is not interpretation… it is what they said about themselves.

The infrastructure is real and it is permanent. The WHO’s Global Digital Health Certification Network is not just a pandemic measure. It is described by its own architects as “the first building block” of something larger. It is a digital ID linked to health status, built during a crisis, and normalized before people could object. That infrastructure does not go away when the emergency ends.

The suppression of scientists was documented. Francis Collins — the Director of the National Institutes of Health — emailed the director of NIAID asking for a “devastating takedown” of Harvard, Oxford, and Stanford professors. In writing and on government servers. It was all recovered by FOIA. If this is how the NIH responds to legitimate scientific dissent, the question isn’t “who are the fringe epidemiologists?” The question is: who decides?

The ARG architecture, if it exists, requires no single puppetmaster. You don’t need one coordinating villain. ARGs work because the puppetmasters share a common framework and a common goal — the story is coherent because everyone operating it is working from the same playbook. Event 201 was a playbook and SPARS 2025 was a playbook. “Build Back Better” was a phrase that appeared across governments simultaneously with no announced coordination. It seems that these are features, not bugs.

I am not claiming that COVID-19 was entirely manufactured. I am also not claiming that the response was entirely innocent. (Either or both could partially be true, and I do not have explicit evidence sufficient to establish either claim beyond reasonable doubt in a scrutinized debate.)

What I am claiming is this: the response had structure. The structure was documented, in some cases in advance and in some cases in writing by its own architects. The structure served interests — some of which were never disclosed to the people living inside it. The product of that structure — the surveillance infrastructure, the digital ID architecture, and the precedent for WHO authority over sovereign health policy — remains in place.

Please understand, that last paragraph is not a conclusion. It’s a starting point for all of us.

What I Know From Standing in That Room

I’ve done hypnotherapy long enough to have seen what happens when someone in a trance state is told their exit is temporary.

You can keep extending a trance. The subject doesn’t notice, usually. They were told it was brief. They’ve accepted the suggestion. (The suggestion is doing its work.) You don’t have to tell them the timeline changed because they’ve already stopped questioning the timeline.

“Two weeks to flatten the curve” was a suggestion in that same sense and it worked. Because it worked, no one needed to tell the public that the two weeks had become two years. By then, the trance was set.

The technique is older than hypnotherapy. Hell, it’s even older than psychology. However, it works the same way whether it’s one person in a clinical chair or three hundred million people watching the same press conference.

I watched it happen, and I recognized it... because it’s what I do. They just left out the consent part. (Hypnotherapists always gain multiple levels and types of consent.)

Final Thoughts

I want to be clear about what this article is and isn’t.

It is not a claim that there was no virus and it is not a claim that everyone who died of COVID died of something else. It is not a claim that any specific person or organization deliberately orchestrated a global biological attack. I simply cannot nail down that piece… and I dare anyone else to try with the existing evidence.

It is a claim that the evidence on the table — the documented evidence, the FOIA emails, the SPI-B minutes, the timing of Event 201 and the Wuhan Military Games, the synchronized language across world governments, the “first building block” architecture of the WHO’s digital health certification network, the suppression of the Great Barrington Declaration, and the five-year reversal on the lab leak — fits a pattern. The pattern has a name.

The turducken. Layers within layers, assembled before serving, impossible to separate once cooked.

Whether it was designed that way or just became that way, I leave to your judgment. What I’m asking is that you not accept the single-dish presentation. What I’m asking is that you hold the whole animal… and inspect it.

There are organizations, departments, and programs in the US military and intelligence apparatus specifically designed to construct and manage information environments at population scale. DARPA spent $42 million learning how to do it. The 4th PSYOP Group exists and the Navy’s Information Warfare Community exists. They are not secret — they’re on government websites. (They just assume you won’t look.)

The question isn’t whether these capabilities exist. They demonstrably do. The question is whether, when you look at the last five years and the pattern I’ve laid out in this timeline, you’re willing to ask out loud:

Was I a player in something I never agreed to join?

Paris, 1821.

A cellar room, candlelit. A group of men stand in silence around a figure on his knees, blindfolded, with hands at his sides. The ceremony has already lasted an hour.

The blindfolded man has been led through a symbolic journey in the dark — a passage through “the forest,” with the sounds of the brotherhood moving around him, guiding him toward something he cannot yet see. Then came a recreation of the trial of Jesus Christ before Pontius Pilate — the master playing Pilate, the initiate playing the condemned.

Now comes the oath. He will swear, on pain of death, to reveal nothing of what he has seen or will see, to protect the wives and daughters of his brothers, and to give every resource in his power to a fellow member in need.

The men around him call themselves the Good Cousins. The uninitiated world outside their walls, they call the Pagani — the pagans.

They are the Carbonari, which means “charcoal burners”, and this cellar, in their language, is not a cellar — it is a vendita, a place for the sale of coal. The neighborhood around it is the forest. The meeting itself has no official name, because the organization officially does not exist.

One detail the historical record preserves, because it tells you something important about where this organization came from: if the man kneeling at the center of the room is already a Freemason, he doesn’t need to go through the apprenticeship at all. He enters directly as a master.

The crisis is always downstream of the headline.
