Today, we’ll explore a concept that will completely change how you view, understand, and reflect on Surah Yusuf: The Ring Structure | التناظر البنائي

The idea is simple. A story is arranged this way:

A, B, C, … D … , C, B, A.

The events before the middle are mirrored by the events after it, in reverse order.

A Different Kind of Storytelling

In classical storytelling, a narrative follows a familiar path:

• a setup where the world is introduced,

• a middle where the conflict rises and tension reaches its peak,

• and an end where the resolution brings everything to a close.

Surah Yusuf redefines this art.

It is a world made up of many smaller stories running inside the big story.

Yusuf ties it all together, and around him stand his father, his brothers, the Minister and his wife, the prison companions, and the King. Each of them has a storyline of their own.

Anyone who has read Surah Yusuf has probably felt this without naming it. So many threads, and every one of them is resolved in reverse order.

Beyond the Ring Structure

What is even more interesting is that the first half of the Surah carries a theme that’s different from the second half.

The First Half

In the first half, Yusuf goes down the wheel: separated from his father, sold as a slave after being found in the well his brothers threw him into, and imprisoned after being falsely accused by the Minister’s wife and her friends.

In this half, the focus is on two things: patience and fear of Allah ﷻ.

﴿إِنَّهُ مَن يَتَّقِ وَيَصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ﴾ [Surah Yusuf 90]

﴿قَالَ رَبِّ ٱلسِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِىٓ إِلَيْهِ﴾ [Surah Yusuf 33]

The Second Half

In the second half, Yusuf is proven innocent, released from prison, becomes in charge of storehouses of Egypt, and reunites with his father and the rest of his family.

In this half, the focus is on one important thing: knowledge.

Allah ﷻ granted Yusuf knowledge of interpreting dreams and economy.

﴿وَكَذَٰلِكَ يَجْتَبِيكَ رَبُّكَ وَيُعَلِّمُكَ مِن تَأْوِيلِ الْأَحَادِيثِ﴾ [Surah Yusuf 6]

﴿قَالَ اجْعَلْنِي عَلَى خَزَائِنِ الْأَرْضِ ۖ إِنِّي حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ﴾ [Surah Yusuf 55]

Be Patient, But Be Prepared

The story teaches us how to survive the hard chapters of our lives, and how to be ready for what comes after them.

Surviving takes patience and fear of Allah ﷻ. Yusuf could not see the second half of the wheel while he was standing in the first.

All he could do was hold on to both and trust that Allah ﷻ does not let the reward of the doers of good be lost.

On the other side, being ready takes knowledge.

The king’s dream came when no one expected it, and Yusuf was prepared to interpret it. And when the chance came to manage the storehouses, he already knew how. The door opened, and he had what it required.

Most of us are somewhere on the wheel right now.

If you are in the first half, the story shows that what you are going through has a matching place waiting on the other side.

And while you wait, keep learning, so that when your turning point arrives, you are ready to walk through it.

In earlier letters, I shared how one of the best ways to stay consistent with Quran revision is to make it part of your daily routine.

For me, that means listening to the Quran while driving.

Today, I’m sharing a video showing exactly how I do it: listening to Sheikh Hani Alrefai while reading along at the same time.

I hope this gives you an idea of how you can make the Quran a more natural part of your daily life, too.

We have all heard this Ayah before, but most of us are not familiar with the details of Masjid al-Haram.

Many of us picture the Ka’bah without a clear sense of what surrounds it or how the different landmarks connect.

The goal of this letter is to make that Ayah a little more visual by showing you where things are and how they relate to one another.

1. The Ka’bah (الكعبة)

• The original shape (on the right): this is how it looked when Ibrahim and Ismail (peace be upon them) raised its foundations

• The current shape (on the left): this is how it looked when Quraysh decided to rebuild it, when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was 35 years old.

Quraysh did not rebuild it on the original foundations of Ibrahim because they lacked purely lawful funds. Instead, they added that U-shaped area, known al-Hijr or al-Hateem, to mark the original boundary of the Ka’bah.

2. The Black Stone (الحجر الأسود)

Most people think the Black Stone is a single piece, when in fact it consists of just the seven small remaining pieces of the original stone.

A large portion of the Quran was revealed in Medina during the ten years the Prophet ﷺ spent there.

It was in this city that the early Muslim community took shape, laws were established, and some of the most defining events in Islamic history unfolded.

Reading about an event mentioned in the Quran is one thing. Knowing exactly where it happened is another.

This is why I made this map so you can see where the Prophet ﷺ built the first mosque in Islam, where he camped for more than twenty days during the Battle of Al-Ahzab, where the Battle of Uhud happened, and a few other spots worth knowing.

When we read this verse about the home of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, most of us don't know what it looked like or where it was located.

Indeed, most of those who call out to you ˹O Prophet˺ from outside ˹your˺ dwellings have no understanding ˹of manners˺ [Surah Al-Hujurat 4]

It's well known that the first word of the Quran to be revealed was “اقرأ” which is often translated as “Read.”

But what if I told you that the word “Read” here doesn’t mean what you think it does. It doesn’t mean that Allah ﷻ is ordering us to seek knowledge or read more books!

So in this letter, I will tell you the true meaning of the word “Read” in this context.

But first to put things into perspective, here are a few pictures of what the place where the Quran was first revealed looks like today.

Before we start, did you know the Quran uses the word “جُبّ” instead of “بئر” to describe the place Yusuf’s brother threw him into?

• The word “بئر” (pronounced: Bi’r) refers to a constructed well, lined and maintained for regular use.

• The word “جُبّ” (pronounced: Jubb) refers to a deep, rough-sided, unlined well that is not maintained. Unlike a regular well, it has no stone or brick lining.

That single word choice is the kind of detail that disappears in translation.

Surah Yusuf is dense with these details. Most of us read past them on the way to the plot.

Here are three more worth stopping for.

When I was in 12th grade, I joined a Quran memorization program.

At the time, I didn’t know what to study after graduating high school. I wasn’t even sure if college was right for me, or if I should just get a job and figure it out from there.

That Quran program gave me something I didn’t know I needed: consistency with the Quran.

The more I read the Quran, the more certain themes started surfacing across different Surahs. One of these themes was knowledge, not in the narrow sense of formal education, but as a way of living and a means of elevation.

To be specific, among many verses in the Quran, here are the three that stood out for me:

Most people who read the Quran stop at one layer of meaning.

They ask what a verse says, get an answer, and move on. That’s Tafsir, the apparent meaning. And for many of us it’s the only layer we’ve ever been taught to look for.

There are two more layers most people never reach, and they’re the ones that change your relationship with the Quran entirely.

We live in a time where the Quran has never been more accessible, yet its impact on our lives has never been harder to see.

We have hundreds of thousands of people memorizing the Quran every day, but most of the time we find the moral guidance the Quran provides is largely absent from public and private life.

If the sheer volume of output was the goal, we’d be living in the golden age.
