It’s fall, but apparently no one told the weather. Instead of waiting around for sweater weather, we’ve been trying to embrace these warm nights and find little ways to make being outside feel special. We recently bought an outdoor movie projector and it’s been a total game changer. Throwing some quilts on the grass, making a giant bowl of popcorn, and watching a movie under the stars has quickly become our new favorite thing to do. I’m realizing more and more that making home feel special isn’t necessarily about doing more— or even buying more. Sometimes it’s just taking the things you already love doing and moving them somewhere different. There’s also something about bringing the indoors out that instantly makes an ordinary night feel like an occasion. A blanket you normally keep inside gets thrown on the lawn, you light a candle or bring out a lantern. We bring out bows of popcorn, something to drink, and suddenly the backyard feels like another room of the house. And for us, another room is NEEDED. With the kids, I’ve learned that it really doesn’t need to be perfect. Actually, I think the slightly thrown together part is what makes it good. Blankets everywhere, everyone picks their spot, Louie (our 14week old puppy) inevitably in the middle of it all, and about 47 trips back into the house for something we forgot. The little rituals are the part I love most.

So, in the spirit of making it all a little easier, I pulled together 11 things that have made bringing the indoors out feel more effortless + a lot more fun.

1. Projector the purchase that started this whole thing. It’s also pretty to look at :)

2. Portable outdoor lamp - because overhead outdoor lighting is never the vibe

3. Birkenstocks by the door - for the approximately 47 trips in + out of the house

4. YETI stackable cubs - cocktails, coffee, you name it

5. Popcorn Bowls or anything bowls (we use ours daily)

6. Rattan Tray - one trip for drinks, snacks + all the goods

7. Paper plates -that are cute enough that no one misses the real thing

8. Lounger - the kind you actually don’t mind sinking into for 2 hours

9. Softest Blanket - because even when it’s 90 degrees all day, somehow you still want one during a movie

10. Little Outdoor Side Table - somewhere to put you drink on so it doesn’t end up on the grass

11. Citronella Candle - ambiance + keeping the bugs away

No elaborate outdoor theater required. Just somewhere comfortable to land, a little warm light and a movie everyone can agree on…or at least mostly agree on. Home doesn’t have to stop at the backdoor. Dinner on the lawn, a movie under the stars, blankets piled everywhere. The kids think it’s magic; and honestly so do I.

I’ve always loved finding things.

Long before I thought about doing anything with interiors, I was the person friends would ask to track down a piece of furniture, a gift, something for a nursery, or that one thing that would make a room feel finished. It’s always felt connected to my work as an artist. Many of the paintings I’ve made over the years were commissioned for people’s homes, and I loved thinking about the spaces they would eventually live in—the colors, the objects around them, + the feeling of the room as a whole. Over time, that love of making art for a home naturally grew into a love of helping shape the rest of it too.

Remnant Home is a place for the things I find, collect, make, source, and genuinely love. Things with character, things worth keeping, + hopefully a few things you haven’t seen everywhere else.

And it felt fitting to start with Halloween. We go a little overboard at our house! But I’m less interested in buying a whole new batch of decorations every October + more interested in slowly collecting things that come back out year after year—pieces that feel nostalgic, a little strange, beautiful, funny, + magical. Creating those little moments around the house that make the kids excited, make someone walking by smile, or make an ordinary October night feel like something.

So for my first Remnant Home edit, I pulled together some of my favorite Halloween finds—some we own, some I’ve collected over the years, and some I’d happily add to the mix. Whether you’re hosting a Halloween party + looking for a few spirited pieces for entertaining, or just want to bring a little more magic to October, these are the things I’d reach for. A little spooky, a little nostalgic, and hopefully nothing that feels too disposable.

These are the things I have either collected or have my eye on for this year!

1. Black Candle: Beautiful year-round, but especially good during Halloween season. 👌🏼

2. Full Moon Masquerade Pillow: The first thing I put on our sofa on the first day of fall.

3. Wicker Bats An easy way to make a wall feel festive without going overboard

4. Chic little terracotta pumpkins that feel more collected than “Halloween decor.”

1. Table Cloth One that works for Halloween but carries you through all of fall

2. Stunning Vase I’ve loved but place it in your home with some …

3. Wooden Garland for the table or around the mantle

4. Nutmeg Napkins that will carry you through fall

1. Skull

2. Ceramic Cauldron A Halloween-party hosting must. Fill it with popcorn, chips, candy—anything.

3. Skeleton bottle opener

4. Pumpkin Plates. Whether you’re entertaining or just want a little Halloween cheer at the table.

1. Big Skelly He’s going on the roof this year.

2. Big Pumpkin that makes a statement

3. Elegant Ghosts for the front porch

4. I have a special place planned for these floating witch hats this year—they’ll be floating in our conservatory dining room.

Welcome to Remnant Home

Hi! I’m Remington Matzinger. I’m an artist, designer, and mama of three.

I studied art, photography, new media, film, art direction/set design, and painting, but after graduating, painting was what I kept coming back to. One of my first commissions was for an interior designer, which led to another, and another, and eventually to opening my own gallery + studio in La Jolla — where I would paint in the window, meet clients, and watch my work find its way into people’s homes.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I loved what happened around the art just as much. During installs, I’d find myself rearranging a room, moving a chair, helping choose an object for a shelf, or talking through what should live alongside a painting. I’ve always loved creating a mood — not only through art, but through everything that surrounds it. And I’ve always been a collector of things. Art, vintage furniture, strange little objects, beautiful books, pieces for my kids’ rooms — things that make a home feel layered and personal rather than perfectly put together. I love the hunt. Finding the piece that makes a room work, the thing you wouldn’t necessarily have thought to look for, or something so good you keep thinking about it afterward.

I haven’t stopped painting, but lately that creative world has expanded. We’re currently living in 1,000 square feet as a family of five — with a new puppy thrown into the mix — while renovating + dreaming up what our home will eventually become. Through all of the chaos, creating + designing has been the thing that keeps me inspired. I’ve fallen in love with the process — sourcing, imagining rooms, mixing old with new, and thinking about not just how a home looks, but how it feels to live in.

Remnant Home grew naturally out of all of that. This will be a place for art, interiors, furniture, objects, vintage finds, kids’ spaces, gifts, entertaining, and the little seasonal traditions that bring some magic into everyday life. Not necessarily what’s new or trending, but things I find beautiful, useful, interesting, or simply worth keeping around. I love a home that feels collected and lived in, but still considered. A little imperfect. A little unexpected. Full of things with a story.

A little sourcebook for a home that feels found, not furnished.

I’m so happy you’re here!
