The Reverie in the Reeds

Clodagh almost noticed the first gift on Monday.

With her phone and keys in one hand, coffee in the other, and a yoga mat tucked beneath her arm, she climbed the three flights of stairs up to her flat. As she climbed, she ran through her to-do list. She still needed to call Michelle back and buy a birthday card for Sarah.

The yoga mat began to slip. She hitched it higher against her shoulder and kept climbing. As she reached the top of the stairs, a white feather drifted across her path. She glanced at it but kept moving. She was going to be late for work.

A few days later, Clodagh woke to sunlight casting rainbows across her bedroom. She watched them for a brief moment before her phone rang. She still hadn’t rung Michelle back.

On Friday, as she walked to work, Clodagh was thinking about what to make for supper. Making a mental note to pick up some bread, she hurried past a sunflower growing through a crack in the sidewalk, its golden face turned towards the sky.

When she was home again that evening, supper became a pot of soup. The smell of garlic and onions filled the kitchen as the soup began to simmer. Clodagh added in thyme and potatoes, then stirred the broth as steam began to lazily curl in ribbons above the pot.

As tiny bubbles rose and broke the surface, a familiar feeling began bubbling up. Clodagh pushed it aside. She still had a presentation to finish, messages to answer, lunch to make and clothes to lay out for the morning.

After supper, Clodagh moved from one thing to the next until nothing was left of the evening. Sighing, she changed into her favourite wildflower pyjamas and climbed into bed, snuggling underneath her faded quilt.

As she reached to switch off the lamp, her eyes fell on the framed photograph beside it. A memory stirred, but before she could really feel it, her thoughts had moved on. What had she forgotten?

Nearly an hour later, Clodagh was still awake. She reached for her earbuds and put on some music, hoping it might help her drift off. A soft, wistful melody filled the darkness. Behind her closed eyes, her breath slowed, rising and falling with each note.

Golden lights appeared around her in the darkness. Clodagh could no longer tell if she was dreaming or standing beneath a star-filled sky.

Moonlight moved through reeds taller than she was, their feathery heads swaying with the soft swooshes of wind and water.

A green-and-gold dragonfly flitted past and disappeared among the reeds. Where it had vanished, the tall stems began to sway, slowly parting to reveal a woman standing among them.

Around her shoulders shimmered a silver-grey cloak, as if spun from mist, spiderwebs and moonlight. Tiny golden lights swarmed around her, catching in her dark hair and making it gleam a glossy midnight blue.

Clodagh’s heart gave a startled leap. Why did she seem so familiar?

Searching the woman’s face, she tried to place her. Then, like a melody she was only beginning to hear, a name seemed to rise from the whispering reeds and water around her.

Queen Mab of the Faeries.

Clodagh knew her without knowing how.

Mab smiled. “I wondered when you’d arrive.”

Turning, she disappeared between the reeds. Clodagh followed her into the woodland beside the marsh.

A fallen log lay beneath the trees, its surface softened with moss. Tucked inside its hollow was a small wooden box, handcarved with vines and leaves.

“For me?” Clodagh asked.

Mab nodded.

Bright light streamed across Clodagh’s face as she opened the box. The woodland softened, its edges blurring like the beginning of a dream.

Before she knew it, she had slipped into a reverie.

She was climbing the stairs to her flat when a white feather, caught on a breath of air, floated in front of her. This time, she stopped to watch, curious about where it had come from and what it might mean.

Sunlight shimmered, spilling rainbows across her bedroom wall. Her phone wasn’t ringing this time. For a while, she watched the colours wander across the wall, delighting in how good it felt to stay in one place.

Her bedroom slowly softened into a familiar stretch of her walk to work. Growing through a crack in the sidewalk was a sunflower, its golden face turned towards the sky. Tangled in her thoughts, she’d never noticed it before. Seeing it now made her wonder how much else had been there all along.

The familiar street began to fade, gradually giving way to the woodland again. Trees appeared overhead, the moss-covered log came into view, and Mab was once more beside her.

Clodagh looked down at the wooden box, still glowing in her hands.

“Oh.”

She had thought the gift was inside the box. Now she understood it had been all around her.

As Mab and Clodagh returned from the woodland, dawn was just beginning to break.

“Why didn’t I see any of these things before?” she asked Mab.

“You’ve been asleep for a long time,” Mab said. “Give yourself time to wake.”

At the water’s edge, Mab took a broken reed and breathed into its hollow stem.

Soft, wistful and sweet, a note rose from the reed into the air. As it lingered, the single note became a melody, and the tall, feathery reeds began swaying to it.

“It can’t be!” Clodagh laughed.

She closed her eyes and listened.

Clodagh awoke to find a white feather beside her pillow. Twirling it between her fingers, she wondered if perhaps the gift wasn’t something to decipher, but simply an invitation to notice.

A tiny rainbow of morning light caught her eye, falling across the photograph on her nightstand. Clodagh looked at it, remembering how happy she had been in that moment, with Rían beside her.

She realized she could travel through time whenever she wanted. All she had to do was pause long enough to picture herself inside the photograph.

For so long, remembering Rían had brought a familiar ache to her chest and tightness to her throat that made her want to turn away. It had been easier to keep moving, focusing on what needed doing, afraid that if she stopped and let herself feel the grief, it might become too much to hold.

What if, instead of focusing on Rían’s absence, she could allow herself to feel his presence? What if, instead of speeding up when the feelings came, she slowed down?

There were so many gifts surrounding her, if only she noticed them.

On her morning run, she hummed a familiar wistful tune. A green-and-gold dragonfly flitted across her path.

Just like in the dream.

Clodagh stopped as the dragonfly landed on a sunflower growing through a crack in the sidewalk, its golden face turned toward the sun.

Growing here, of all places, with barely enough room between the concrete. Like the feather, the sight of it stirred something small and hopeful in her.

Perhaps even the tiniest space was room enough for something new to grow.

Clodagh slipped a hand into her pocket and felt something small beneath her fingers. She drew out a handful of sunflower seeds and stared at them, then found the tiny hole in the corner of her pocket.

Surely not?

Clodagh laughed.

The city hadn’t changed. Cars moved along the street, doors opened and closed, and somewhere a dog barked. Everything was exactly where it had been before.

Only now, Clodagh was looking, not ahead to whatever came next, but at what was already here.

She closed her fingers around the sunflower seeds and smiled.

For the first time in a long time, she felt hopeful about what she might find.

The Season of Hope

Reed arrives with the thirteenth lunation of the Celtic Tree Calendar, sharing its lunar cycle with Blackthorn. It’s also the season of the Wine Moon and Mabon, the Autumn Equinox.

I love this time of year, when the leaves begin to change. One day, though, it wasn’t the autumnal colors that caught my eye. Beneath my feet was a flash of yellow: a sunflower growing in the narrow space between the concrete and the road.

Later, when I began imagining Clodagh hurrying through her own days, I knew there had to be a sunflower growing along her path too.

Writing about Clodagh made me notice different things about my own life. I’d finish an essay for Sanctuary and already be thinking about the next. If I had some free time for myself, I’d fill it catching up on comments and messages. At home or in the garden, there was always something else I could be doing.

Lately, I’ve been wanting fewer things to do and more time that feels like my own. I want to finish something without feeling pressured and spend an afternoon with myself without feeling like I need to fill it with something productive.

I thought again about the sunflower growing in that little crack between the concrete. Somehow, it had found enough room. I wondered what might happen if I made some room too.

So I’ve decided to publish a bit less often on Sanctuary, leaving more time between essays. When I finish one, I won’t be writing the next one immediately. I can take more time for myself, spend an afternoon in the garden, or follow what I feel drawn towards that day.

I’ve discovered this season that hope is trusting that something can still grow, even in the smallest opening, and leaving enough room to discover what it might be.

Reed, the Lady of the Marsh

I think the sunflower was the gift that led me to Reed, the tree of this lunar month.

Common Reed (Phragmites australis) grows along lakes, rivers, marshes and wetlands. Beneath the water, its rhizomes spread through the soil, sending up new shoots while much of the plant remains hidden. I like knowing there’s more beneath the surface than I can see.

I was thinking about this as I followed a woodland path one afternoon to where the reeds grow along the water. Dragonflies skimmed the surface and feathery stems moved in the breeze. As I slowed down, I became aware of what had been stirring in me too.

Soon I was swaying with the reeds, doing Bamboo Sway, one of my favourite Qigong practices. As I swayed and followed their rhythm, I thought about how it’s the hollow space inside the reeds that allows breath to become music.

The hollow space isn’t waiting to be filled. It’s what lets the music through.

I thought again about the sunflower. Maybe leaving room isn’t only about what might grow there. Like the hollow reed, sometimes it’s the space itself that allows something through I might not otherwise hear.

Reed’s Medicine

Perhaps this is Reed’s medicine for the season: we don’t always need to be moving towards whatever comes next. There’s already so much here when we slow down enough to notice: memories we want to linger with, beings we love, things that make us curious, and parts of ourselves we can finally hear.

When I look at nGetal (ᚍ), Reed’s old Ogham mark, I see reeds leaning and swaying across its central line. On days when I find myself in the reeds, moving from one thing to the next, it reminds me to pause, breathe and sway for a while.

The Blackbird and the Ivy

Once there was a girl named Luna who walked through the woods wearing a cloak of green.

Ivy threaded through her dark hair and draped from her shoulders, as though the woodland had woven her garment from living thread.

She wandered the forest every day, following different paths that led beyond hazel and ash trees. She knew where the softest moss resided, wrens nested, and mushrooms appeared after autumn rains.

In time, she knew the woodland by heart, but of everything within it, the vines fascinated her most.

Ivy spiralled around the trees of the forest, vanishing and reappearing amidst the canopy. She imagined Ivy was weaving the pattern of the forest all around her.

One summer, a great storm swept through the woodland. Branches groaned, rain beat against the leaves, and thunder clapped across the sky.

When Luna came to the woodland the next morning, she discovered her beloved oak, Darragh, torn from the earth. He had always stood at the heart of the forest. To Luna, the birds and all the woodland creatures, he’d been a steady old presence, a friend around whom life had gathered and grown for as long as anyone could remember.

Luna stood quietly beside Darragh for a long time. She rested a hand against his bark, remembering the gentleness and wisdom she’d always felt in his presence. She’d miss sitting beneath his branches, leaning against his trunk, and catching sight of his familiar form through the trees. Somehow, Darragh had always helped her find her way, both in the forest and in her life.

Now the air smelled of emptiness, of wet earth and broken wood. Darragh’s roots reached into the air, and the place beneath his branches was wide open. For a moment, Luna wondered if it was possible for earth to become sky.

In the days that followed, Luna felt terribly alone. Every path seemed to bring her back to the clearing where Darragh had once stood.

Then she began to hear a lone blackbird.

Its song drifted through the woodland, like a premonition of an understanding soon to come. One evening, as Luna sat listening to the blackbird’s song, she noticed a strand of ivy creeping across Darragh’s roots.

Curious to see where it went, Luna got to her feet and followed.

As Ivy led Luna through the forest, the blackbird’s song seemed to follow, its gentle, melodious notes drifting like pollen through the trees and settling softly around her.

Slowly, Luna began noticing more than what had been lost.

She saw new seedlings push through the earth, moss spread softly over fallen wood, and ferns unfurl in places once shaded by branches.

She discovered hidden corners of the forest she had never visited and wondered how much had been beyond the paths she knew.

As the weeks passed, Ivy led Luna farther and farther through the forest, until one evening they reached a rocky ridge, where Ivy disappeared amongst the heather.

At the top of the ridge, the blackbird sang one final, true note, as if capturing mourning and joy all at once.

The sound rose like a star appearing in the night sky, lifting above the forest canopy and echoing through the valley until all of the leaves seemed to grow still beneath it.

Luna felt the note move through her, reaching the place where she still ached for Darragh.

For a moment, time seemed to pause.

She lifted her eyes and looked out across the woodland.

The ache wasn’t gone, but somehow it had softened enough to make room for something else: love, wonder, even a little hope.

The last of the sunlight spilled gold across the treetops as twilight gathered around Luna.

Above her, the sky slowly deepened from blue to violet. One by one, the stars came out, until the Milky Way appeared like a river of light flowing through the darkness.

Soon, Luna spotted Cygnus gliding along the galaxy’s shining path. She delighted in finding Cassiopeia’s familiar crooked W overhead. Beyond the treetops, she watched Pegasus rise on invisible wings.

Luna knew the stars’ stories of love and loss, courage and change. She’d heard them many times before. Yet somehow, standing atop the ridge, they felt different.

She breathed in the damp earth and heather. As she thought of Darragh, she stretched her arms outwards as if she were embracing the whole sky. The blackbird’s melody enveloped her, stirring something ancient she couldn’t quite name.

Her gaze wandered from the stars above to the forest below.

As Luna looked, the scattered pieces of the forest seemed to draw closer together. Streams and paths, trees and Daragh’s clearing, old places along with the newly discovered ones all seemed connected in ways she could only see from here.

Slowly, the woodland began to resemble the sky above, golden threads of light weaving through the forest from one place to another.

The forest was its own constellation.

A blackbird settled on a nearby ash, its feathers burnished by the fading light.

For a while, Luna and the blackbird sat together. Then came the soft rustle of wings.

Where the blackbird had been, an old woman stood wrapped in a dark green cloak, silver hair lifting in the breeze.

“You followed the vine a long way,” she said.

Luna looked towards the path below. “I thought it was taking me somewhere.”

The old woman smiled. “And did it?”

Luna smiled too.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Far below, a blackbird began to sing.

Its notes floated through the cool evening air, weaving through the rustling leaves.

Luna could no longer tell where the song ended and the forest began.

An Evergreen Season

Ivy, the eleventh tree of the Celtic Tree Calendar, rises as autumn beckons. Summer is still with us, but signs of its leaving are everywhere.

The light falls differently, slipping lower through the trees as green leaves begin to turn amber, copper and gold.

Yet ivy (Hedera helix) remains green.

So I find myself wondering: What remains when Summer begins to fall away?

I think of the dandelion and the little universe held within its life: first a golden sun, then a pale round moon, and then tiny stars waiting to be scattered upon the wind.

Maybe wisdom arrives this way. The seeds take to the wind, and only with time do they settle, take root and begin to grow.

Time reminds me I must wait to discover what has grown. Nature reminds me that beginning again is part of the ongoing cycle of life and death.

Somehow, like ivy, I have to grow around what remains.

Ivy, The Weaver

There’s something quite lovely in the way Ivy grows in relationship with the trees around her.

Like Ivy, we grow through connection too. Our lives are shaped by the people who accompany us, the places that hold our memories, and the stories we carry with us.

This season, I invite you to wonder: Who or what is woven into the person you are becoming?

Ivy'’s Medicine

The Blackbirds of Rhiannon appear in the old Welsh tales of the Mabinogion. Rhiannon’s three blackbirds were known to sing so beautifully that their song could soften sorrow and slow the passage of time.

In Luna’s story, Ivy leads her deeper into the woodland while the blackbird draws her onwards. It’s only when she reaches the ridge that she can see the larger landscape. Darragh’s absence is still there, but it’s no longer all that she can see.

Grief can be like this.

When we lose someone or something we love, the loss can take up so much space that, for a while, it’s hard to see much beyond it.

Our feelings don’t follow a straight path either, just as Ivy doesn’t take a straight path through the woodland. We can feel sorrow and acceptance, fear and courage, uncertainty and understanding, all within the same hour, minute or day.

Over time, I’ve come to think of healing not as leaving loss behind, but as the landscape slowly becoming wider again.

Ivy’s Medicine

As the season changes, Ivy’s small flowers offers pollen, followed by dark berries for blackbirds through winter.

In the old Ogham tradition, Ivy is Gort, meaning field or enclosure. I rather like its association with the phrase greener than pastures. Even the symbol (ᚌ), two strokes crossing the central stemline, looks a little like ivy reaching out towards whatever supports it.

This season, I’m finding something hopeful and reassuring in Ivy’s presence. She reminds me that I don’t have to leave behind what has shaped me to keep growing.

The Happy Bee

“What a remarkable phenomenon love is!

Once there was a tall Victorian glasshouse with black iron arches and glittering panes of glass. In the sunlight, she shone like gold, her glass so clear the blue sky seemed to shimmer inside.

Peering through her panes revealed rows and rows of herbs, vegetables, and flowers in every shade and stage of green, from tiny sprouts to leafy stems, and bright blooms.

All around her lay cold earth and bare branches. Beyond the warmth of her glass, the garden was just beginning to awaken.

The glasshouse had seen the seasons change many times. She knew exactly when the apple tree would bloom, the lavender would flower, the swallows would gather, and the bees would disappear for the coming of winter.

At the far edge of the garden stood a thick hedgerow, marking the end of all she could see.

“Bzzzz!”

The sound drew her attention to a little bee who had flown in, bobbing from blossom to blossom.

“What a beautiful place!” the bee cried.

The glasshouse answered with a soft creak.

The next day, in buzzed the bee again, her legs dusted with gold.

“You seem cheerful today,” said the glasshouse.

“Why shouldn’t I be? There are so many lovely flowers here, and a whole world lying beyond.”

“A whole world…”

“Oh yes!”

“Where have you been?”

“Almost everywhere!” said the bee. I’ve seen reeds whispering beside rivers and purple mountains disappearing into clouds.

The glasshouse could hardly imagine such things.

Another visitor soon found her way up the garden path.

When Beatrice saw the glasshouse glittering between the trees, she stopped.

“Well, aren’t you beautiful,” she said.

The glasshouse replied with a satisfied creak.

Beside the glasshouse, lavender spilled unapologetically along the path. Beatrice carried a thick leather notebook, its pages brimming with places she’d been: ticket stubs and postcards, pressed leaves and little scraps of paper.

She didn’t say much, but wrote or drew whenever something in the garden, like a butterfly, invited her attention.

The bee darted through the lavender, watching her.

Beatrice smiled and held out her hand.

“How do you do?” she said. “You’re a happy little bee.”

“What a curious human,” thought the bee. Still, she quite liked the sound of that.

Soon, the glasshouse began listening for the bee’s familiar buzzing and Beatrice’s footsteps along the path.

“Where have you been?” she would ask.

Beatrice settled into her usual place while the bee told them of her latest adventures.

“Once, I flew so far I could taste salt on the wind.”

“Salt?”

“It was the sea! I watched the sun sink right into it.”

Beside them, Beatrice smiled.

The glasshouse imagined the salt on the wind, the endless water, and the sun disappearing beyond a horizon she had never seen.

For a moment, it was as if her glass walls had disappeared and her slender frame become arms outstretched towards the open sky.

Soon, everything began to ripen in the glasshouse and garden.

Dark purple beans wound around their stalks. Tomatoes glowed on the vines like little lanterns. The bee happily rummaged amongst the bright yellow stars beginning to emerge from the cucumber vines.

“I must be off soon,” she would say. “I have yet to meet a lotus flower.”

Beatrice glanced up from her notebook.

“You know this garden better than anyone.”

“I’ve been here a long time.”

“But never beyond the hedgerow?”

For a moment, no one spoke.

“Perhaps…” the bee said at last, “I’ll stay one more day.”

The next day, the bee hovered around Beatrice.

Along the garden path, the lavender was in full bloom, scenting the air with its woody perfume.

“You two are more alike than you think,” said the glasshouse.

“Her?” The bee seemed surprised.

“You both carry things from one place to another.”

“Small treasures?” laughed the bee.

Beatrice glanced towards the garden, where tiny apples were appearing amongst blossoms the bee had visited weeks before.

“Perhaps we do,” she said.

A thoughtful little hum drifted from somewhere amongst the purple puffs of lavender.

One golden afternoon seemed to tumble into the next.

Soon, fallen leaves found their way into Beatrice’s notebook. Apples turned rosy pink, poppies traded scarlet petals for seed heads, and harvest baskets brimmed with purple beans, red tomatoes, and slender green cucumbers.

One morning, pearls of dew covered everything and silver cobwebs crept along the garden path.

Beatrice sat quietly beside the glasshouse.

“My train leaves in the morning.”

“We shall miss having you here,” said the glasshouse.

Beatrice stood and placed her hand upon the glass.

“I shall never forget you,” she said, then turned to the little bee resting on a lavender stem. “Nor you.”

“What about you? Where will you go next?”

The bee glanced towards the hedgerow, then back at the glasshouse.

“Don’t worry,” she said. “I’ll stay with you always.”

The glasshouse shimmered from pane to pane.

On the train, a dried sprig of lavender slipped from Beatrice’s notebook into her lap.

She held it for a moment, remembering the little bee and the glasshouse shimmering in the sun.

Beatrice smiled. Perhaps the glasshouse had been right.

She tucked the lavender back between the pages, picked up her pen, and began to write.

The Season of Gathering

Lughnasadh arrives while the weather is still warm, just as the harvest begins.

In ancient Ireland, the harvest was held in honour of Lugh, a god of skill and craftsmanship. People travelled to hills and high places to celebrate together, sharing food, stories, and music.

Lately, this season has got me thinking about the journeys I’ve taken and how they change the way I see things.

When I travel, I love noticing small details: a crooked lane, an old stone wall, the sound of a bird I’ve never heard before. These are things a local might pass by without a second glance, but to me, they’re small treasures.

When I’m home again, I’m seeing things I’ve seen a hundred times before. Yet, something has shifted. I hear a different melody in the chickadee’s song or notice the light falling across my garden differently. Travel has made the familiar interesting again.

It changes my perspective in other ways too. When I travel, I notice different rhythms and ways of being. I might linger over a latte longer, walk more, or cook a new recipe. Little pieces of another place find their way into my life.

I think that’s one of the gifts of travelling. The small treasures aren’t just what I see and do along the way. They are the things that shift my perspective and change how I live once I’m home again.

Today, I went for a walk, starting where I always do, looking across the water at the Lanterns on the Lake. There’s been a lot of change on the horizon lately, and I’ve found myself asking a lot of what-if questions:

✨ What if there’s another way of looking at this?

✨ What if it’s okay to want something new or different?

✨ What if there’s another path I haven’t yet seen or considered?

✨ What if letting go makes room for something new to grow?

✨ What if the next adventure is waiting for us?

Somewhere in those questions, I began opening myself to possibilities. Once I could imagine something different, another path revealed itself.

That’s how I ended up on the hill, looking back across the water at the lanterns and the horizon stretching beyond them. Suddenly, I could see my own lanterns too, each illuminating something I’d been learning along the way. One by one, those possibilities lit up until I could see the beautiful spiral they had been forming.

I’d been writing about my own life all along as life was teaching me the very lessons I was writing about.

The journeys I’ve taken, the uncertainty I’ve lived with, the places I’ve travelled, the garden that’s healed me, nd the home I’ve lived in have all been part of a larger spiralling pattern.

The brightest lantern was the one I needed most: leaving doesn’t mean leaving everything behind.

No matter the destination, I know you’ll surround me wherever we go.

The harvest isn’t just what we gather, but what we grow.

Telling the Bees

Stories are another kind of treasure we carry with us. Some come home with our travels; others begin closer to home.

Last year, before travelling to Ireland, I reread Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince, a story I’ve loved since childhood. After visiting Wilde’s house and memorial, I read it again when I came home.

This time, through the lens of travel and my own experiences of loss and hardship, I read the same story from a different place and understood its sadness and sacrifice in a way I never could before. I wished the story could end differently. What if the gifts could keep growing?

Then this spring, a happy little Bee began darting in and out of my greenhouse. I started talking to her whenever she appeared. The Swallow became my Bee, carrying her stories to the Glasshouse, while Beatrice would eventually carry both their stories beyond the garden.

Then I discovered the old Irish tradition of telling the bees. When something important happened in a household, the bees were told too. I loved learning that people had shared their stories with bees long before I started talking to mine.

Maybe that’s the gift of gathering small treasures. We carry them without knowing what lanterns of possibility they might become. Sometimes they change how we see something familiar, lead us toward a new adventure, or even become a story.

Perhaps we don’t need to know where the path leads before following it. Sometimes the only way to find out is to choose a path and see where it takes us.

Curiosity

“Live the questions now.” — Rainer Maria Rilke

Sometimes I forget how extraordinary the Summer Solstice really is.

Long ago, our ancestors noticed changes in the light as the days lasted longer and longer. They perceived something infinite and vast, the Earth’s journey around the sun, in something as small as the changing length of a shadow.

Perhaps the Celts knew something we have forgotten: the largest patterns are revealed through the smallest things.

Have you ever noticed similarities between the spiral of a snail’s shell and the changing seasonal patterns of light, the unfurling of a fern, and the scattered stars gathered into constellations?

Do you see yourself reflected in the small, the large, and the seemingly infinite, in which every rhythm has its place- the slow and the quick, the steady and the shifting, the calm and the storm?

Lately, I’ve been spending a great deal of time asking myself these questions. I find myself searching for a direction, an answer, any reassurance at all that there’s a pattern, even when I can’t yet see it.

I sat beside a pond, wondering what it many have to teach me, as I looked upon a small world beneath the water lilies. It became a poem called A Microcosm of Being.

Long after I left the pond, the memory stayed with me. I kept thinking about the koi fish and how he moved through the water, so untroubled.

I wonder what it might feel like for my own pond to be enough?

It was as if I wrote the poem in response to Rilke’s invitation, the words taking shape before I noticed their wisdom, and long before I was able to live them.

Perhaps the poem will meet you in a different place, if you choose to linger with it. There’s no need to find the answers yet.

This season I’m learning something new about myself. I’m deeply uncomfortable with uncertainty. It feels safer when I know there’s another pathway to lead me home.

Even in uncertainty, nature comforts me. I spend some time in the company of my hazelnut tree. The spiral returns, but never to precisely where it began.

Perhaps the Summer Solstice is here to remind me that life’s rhythms are older, richer and far more mysterious than I may have imagined.

This is where my own Map of the Stars begins, not in having the answers, but in being curious enough to ask the questions.

Compassion

“No feeling is final.” — Rainer Maria Rilke

Some memories live within us as landscapes, with pathways we have followed so often our footsteps have worn them smooth. Each time we return, we take the same turns, arrive at the same places, and tell ourselves the same story about what happened there.

This season, I’ve found myself walking one of those well-worn paths, returning to a story that I‘ve carried for years.

Then, when writing The Lanterns on the Lake, the path led me somewhere different. It was through writing Líadan that another pathway began to appear. As she learned to see her story differently, I began to see another way through my own.

That’s why I finally feel ready to share the real story that inspired hers.

I remember the day so clearly, like sunlight reaching through the crystal-blue water of a lake, to reveal the stones and sediment resting below.

Nearly a year had passed since grief had made continuing to work impossible. Now the day had come for me to return.

I was terrified.

I loved my job, but for years I had endured bullying. No one had reached out during my absence and I feared returning to something worse and being ostracized as others had been before me. I had once been an outspoken advocate for mental health, but grief had carved away my insides, leaving me unsure whether I could withstand any more.

That morning, my husband walked the several kilometres from our home to campus with me because I knew I couldn’t make the journey alone. I had more panic attacks than I could count, each one rising before the last had fully passed, like waves crashing on the shore.

By the time we reached campus, fear had flooded my entire body. I was struggling to breathe and using every ounce of my energy to keep going.

Somewhere beneath the fear, there was a tiny hope that someone might look up and smile, meet my eyes, or offer some simple sign they were glad I had returned.

But no one looked up. No one said hello. No one even acknowledged that I was there.

The silence did not end that morning, or even that day. For nearly two weeks, no one spoke to me.

It was as if I had become a ghost, haunting a life to which I no longer belonged.

In my bewilderment, my nervous system reached for an explanation that I already knew:

I am not enough.

The silence found an older wound within me, gathering every absence, silence, and rejection — the scattered stars of my life — into a familiar constellation, a story that I recognized.

You see, when we’ve been hurt repeatedly, the nervous system doesn’t always reach for the kindest explanation. It searches for a well-worn path that makes the world feel safe.

For years, I kept trodding down that path, mistaking familiarity for truth.

I worked harder, faster and for much longer, believing that if I were capable, useful, strong, or indispensable enough, no one could ever turn away from me again.

But as I followed Líadan through the darkness towards the lake, the path began to change. I watched the lanterns with her, felt her weariness and longing for answers. I recognized something of myself in the way she moved through the night.

Most of all, I recognized how desperately she needed someone to turn towards her.

That’s why the old woman appeared. By turning towards Líadan, she offered something more important than an answer: the experience of being seen.

I slowly began to question the old story. Self-blame had offered the illusion of control: if I was the reason people turned away, then I could change enough to keep the pain from returning.

I began to recognize that:

✨Something in me was no longer willing to keep living inside that story.

✨Something in me wanted more freedom than familiarity.

✨Somewhere beneath the fear, curiosity had become stronger than certainty.

When Líadan reached towards the unknown and began to climb, something within me moved with her.

I began to see myself differently.

I began to see not failure but courage: a grieving woman carrying unseen pain, returning even as her whole body urged her to run.

Through Líadan, I could finally turn to her with compassion and say: you do not need to work harder or hide your grief to be worthy of kindness.

Perhaps this is what Rilke meant. The past remains unchanged, but the feelings we carry forward can soften.

Now, another reflection is emerging in the water, not the ghost who disappeared, but the woman who survived being unseen.

Perhaps that’s the gift of returning. Not because the past changes, but because we do.

Possibility

“Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” — Mary Oliver

Seeing myself differently has made me realize there’s often more to the story. The pieces may remain the same, but there’s a chance they may be arranged differently.

I’ve been learning to play American Mahjong, a complex game of memory, strategy, probability… and you’ve guessed it, pattern recognition.

Four players draw and discard beautifully illustrated tiles, each trying to create a complete 14-tile hand. On every turn, you draw a tile and discard another, slowly gathering one of the combinations you need from the annual game card. The first person to complete a hand declares ‘Mahjong’ and wins the game.

The aim sounds simple until I look at the card.

Its 72 combinations can form more than 1,077 playable variations, meaning the same collection of tiles holds over a thousand possibilities.

Before each game, the four of us shuffle the tiles face down, their soft porcelain clatter sounding like a chorus of small birds. It makes perfect sense that Mahjong comes from máquè, the Chinese word for sparrow.

As we play, my teacher doesn’t tell me what to do. She asks “What do you notice?” and “What other patterns could this turn into?”

I study the unfamiliar landscape of bams (bamboo), dots, craks, flowers, winds, and dragons, drawing and discarding as I wait for a pattern to emerge.

My instinct is to choose a hand quickly and hold on. Certainty feels safer than possibility. But Mahjong requires me to watch the game change and be willing to choose another direction.

Soon I’m thinking about the patterns in my own life. What if the same experiences could be gathered differently? What if the tiles I had mistaken for proof that I wasn’t enough also revealed the courage that it took to continue?

Mahjong is starting to feel less like a game and more like a new way to inhabit my life.

Every Sunday, I’m practising its lessons around a table alive with the clatter of tiles.

Curiosity, I’ve discovered, is a far better guide than certainty.

The Lanterns on the Lake

Líadan arrived at the lake just as the last light settled upon the water.

Some evenings the wind stirred the lake’s surface. Other nights it lay as still and smooth as polished glass. Whenever Líadan wound her way down the path, the lake started to reflect her internal weather back to her.

Some evenings, her thoughts danced recklessly without abandon. Even more difficult than the storms were the nights when the stillness of the lake revealed questions she could no longer outrun.

She longed for answers. Even more so, she wanted to be relieved of the fears she had grown weary of carrying.

Soon she discovered she wasn’t the only one returning to the lakeside. Every evening, there was an old woman who sat upon the same weathered stone. One night curiosity drew Líadan to speak to her.

“I see you here often,” Líadan said. “What are you watching?”

“The lanterns.”

Líadan looked across the lake.

“I don’t see them.”

“Not tonight.”

Líadan looked across the lake once more, hoping to glimpse them.

For the first time she found herself seeking something other than answers.

The next night Liadan returned to the lake, hoping the lanterns would appear.

Night after night, she stared at the reflection of the water, wondering what she was missing. Was the old woman sitting next to her seeing something she couldn’t see? Could the reflection of the stars leave a pattern of light?

She studied the stars and the lights across the water, certain there was a pattern she had yet to understand. She noticed sparrows skimming the water at dusk, reeds bowing in the evening breeze, and the changing colours of the sky reflected upon the lake.

That evening, curiosity got the better of her. Líadan turned to the old woman.

“Have the lanterns always been here?”

“As long as I can remember.”

“Do you know what they mean?”

The old woman smiled.

“I’ve never needed to.”

It was a few weeks later when the old woman lightly touched Líadan’s arm.

Without speaking, she nodded towards the water.

There, drifting across the still surface, was a single lantern, its golden flame shimmering against the gathering dusk.

“It’s beautiful,” Líadan whispered.

The old woman smiled but said nothing.

Líadan watched, full of wonder, as another lantern appeared, and another. Soon the lake was scattered with lanterns, each gliding so gently they seemed like fallen stars upon the water.

She was too spellbound to speak.

The next evening, Líadan had a list of questions to ask the old woman about.

But when she arrived, she found the shoreline empty. For the first time since they had met, the old woman was not sitting upon her weathered stone.

She settled in to wait for her companion, her eyes wandering to a narrow path she had never thought to follow. It climbed the hillside overlooking the lake before disappearing among the grasses and pines.

Almost without thinking, she climbed. At the crest of the hill, she turned towards the water.

One by one the lanterns began to appear. Yet from where she stood, they curved gently around one another until they formed a magnificent spiral stretching out across the water.

She watched, tears gathering without quite knowing why.As darkness settled, she made her way back down the hill.

At the shoreline, she turned back for one last look. The spiral had vanished, just as she knew it would.

All those evenings she had searched for meaning, never understanding the pattern could only be seen by changing where she stood.

She smiled and continued onwards.

The Season of Illumination

Summer Solstice brings the longest light of the year. Bonfires burned across the hillsides as the Celts gathered to celebrate the fullness of the light and to honour the land in its season of greatest abundance.

Within this turning point came the threshold of illumination. Standing at the height of the sun’s journey, the Celts knew the land would soon begin its gentle turn towards autumn.

It was a time when many believed the veil between the visible and the invisible grew thin. Lakes, hilltops, stone circles and ancient trees became places to seek wisdom, because people believed the light would help to reveal what had always been there.

Perhaps the old stories are meant to show us what we’ve forgotten. Maybe the reason so many ancient monuments align with the light is not to teach us where to stand, but to awaken the light within.

The Summer Solstice invites us to wonder:

✨ What is being illuminated in my life this season?

✨ What truths are waiting to be seen?

✨ Where am I being invited to see my inner landscape more clearly?

Our outer and inner landscapes reflect one another. As the sun reaches its greatest height this season, perhaps our own awareness might do the same.

In Verdant Veritas

When Ivy left for her holiday, she tucked the last sunflower seedling into the warm soil. Brushing the earth gently around its tiny roots, she smiled.

“I’ll only be gone two weeks,” she whispered.

The garden said nothing. Gardens rarely do. They simply grow.

During the first days it rained softly. The roses drank deeply, the grapevine stretched another curious tendril, and the ivy began to wander into the greenhouse as though it had been waiting.

Every morning the rain returned. Every evening the garden grew a little wilder.

When Ivy opened the garden gate two weeks later, she forgot to take another step.

Before her stood a place she recognised, yet had never truly seen before.

The roses had become thick as bramble, their tufts of ivory blooms extending from the thorns like clouds billowing toward the sun-scorched sky.

Green ivy climbed the fence, wandered over the greenhouse roof, and reached for the eaves of the house as though trying to stitch every corner of the garden together.

Grapevines braided themselves through the fence and tumbled over the pergola like a green veil. Foxgloves had appeared in the sunniest spots amongst the shade of the fern fronds, lemon balm and apple mint in places she could not remember planting them. Birds seemed to know pathways she herself had forgotten.

It was a verdant palace that was utterly magnificent.

For several days she simply wandered, discovering her little stone fairy smiling beneath a curtain of rambling roses, a ladybird sleeping within a grapevine, and calendula she had forgotten she'd planted lifting their golden faces above the sea of verdant green.

Laughing aloud, she wove herself a crown of daisies from the meadow of wildflowers that had appeared. The garden felt older than when she left, as though it had remembered something.

“Perhaps this is what gardens dream of becoming when gardeners go away.”

The garden answered only with birdsong.

Then, little by little, she began to notice.

The sweet peas had climbed bravely but were flowering only where they could find light.

The delphiniums leaned sideways, their blue spires bravely searching for the sky beneath the generous branches of the blackberry bramble.

The peonies had become so magnificent that her sunflower seedlings were drenched in their shadow.

Her namesake had climbed the walls of her house.

The grapevine had entered the greenhouse.

The roses had become almost impossible to pass.

Every plant had become exactly what it wanted to be.

The trouble was, they all wanted the same piece of sky.

Ivy stood quietly in the garden.

None of the plants were doing anything wrong. The ivy simply climbed, the grapevine reached, the roses bloomed, and the sunflower sought the sun. Every living thing was fulfilling its own nature.

Perhaps, she thought, the gardener’s work is not to decide which plants are good or bad, but to discern what each one needs so they can live together.

The next morning she began gently untangling the ivy from the greenhouse, coaxing it back outside.

As she worked, it seemed to whisper, See how quickly I can cover an empty wall.

The grapevine, with its three-pronged leaves, laughed softly in the breeze. Give me one more season and I’ll take over the pergola.

The roses sighed. No one asked us to stop. We can’t help being thorny.

She smiled.

“Of course,” she whispered.

“It’s simply your nature.”

Then she looked at the notebook tucked beneath her arm.

Already it held a list, several ideas and projects she wanted to begin now that she was home.

On holiday she had lingered over morning coffee, watching the light shift colours over the landscape. She had become so immersed in the moment she forgot what day it was. Yet at home, every empty hour filled itself before she had noticed it.

She looked up at the green ivy climbing the greenhouse and smiled.

“Perhaps,” she whispered, “I have been growing in every direction except inward.”

The garden rustled gently around her.

It sounded very much like agreement.

That afternoon she did not tame the garden.

Instead, she made room for the sweet peas to climb, for the calendula to greet the morning sun, and for the blue delphiniums to find the sky once more.

She left the roses wonderfully wild, allowed the ivy to climb the fence, and braided the grapevines on a trellis that reached upwards to the sky.

The garden remained enchanted.

Only now, everything had enough light.

As evening settled over the garden, Ivy carried a cup of tea along the winding path.

The little stone fairy smiled from beneath the roses once more.

Ivy brushed away the last of the fallen leaves gathered around the fairy’s moss-covered stone.

Carved into its base, softened by weather and almost hidden by time, were words she had not noticed in years.

In Verdant Veritas.

In green, there’s truth.

Ivy smiled.

The fairy had never really been lost.

She had simply been waiting for a little more light.

The Season of Fulfillment

The Vine, the tenth tree of the Celtic Tree Calendar, rises in the weeks surrounding Lughnasadh (Lammas), celebrated on August 1st. Known as the Feast of First Fruits or the Day of Bread, it marks the first harvest, a season of gratitude for what has ripened through months of quiet tending.

By midsummer, spring's promise has become fulfillment. Leaves have unfurled, flowers have opened, fruit begins to swell, and the landscape hums with life. Everywhere, something is reaching, climbing, flowering, or ripening.

The Vine embodies this season beautifully. It reaches with joyful exuberance, reminding us that life naturally seeks expansion, connection, and light.

Yet Lammas brings a quiet turning point. Not every opportunity can be pursued nor can every path be followed.

As the harvest is gathered, we are invited to pause, give thanks for what has come to fruition, and gently discern what we wish to continue cultivating as the wheel of the year begins its slow turn toward autumn.

Vine, the Connector

Although the Celtic Vine is traditionally associated with the grapevine (Vitis vinifera), the spirit of the Vine can be seen in many climbing and rambling plants. Grapevines, hops, ivy, clematis, honeysuckle, blackberries, and rambling roses all share the same instinct: to climb and seek the light.

Unlike trees, vines rarely stand alone. They climb by curling tendrils, twining stems, clinging roots, or arching canes, relying on other plants or structures to lift them toward the sun. Their gift is not height, but relationships and connections.

For the Celts, the Vine was associated with intuition, inspiration, fulfillment, and the rich abundance of late summer. It reminds us that growth is life’s natural impulse, yet every season of flourishing invites a quieter question.

Not simply,

What’s growing?

But,

What’s asking for the light?

Vine’s Wisdom

In her garden, Ivy discovered that every plant had become exactly what it wanted to be. The ivy climbed while the roses bloomed. None of them were doing anything wrong. Each was simply fulfilling its own nature.

Our inner lives unfold in much the same way. Thoughts, habits, relationships, dreams, ambitions, and fears all reach for the light of our attention. Like the vines in Ivy’s garden, they are not wrong for growing. Left unnoticed, however, some become so vigorous that they begin to crowd out other parts of ourselves that have been patiently waiting for a little more light.

Returning home, Ivy noticed how quickly the spaciousness of her holiday gave way to lists, projects, responsibilities, and the quiet pressure to do just one more thing. In tending her garden, she discovered she was also tending herself. The garden had become a mirror, reflecting the way she had been living.

Whatever receives our attention grows stronger. Like sunlight falling across a garden, our attention shapes the landscape of our inner lives.

Rather than judging what is growing within us or trying to pull every vine away, mindfulness invites us to notice our inner gardens with discernment and kindness. Sometimes this means gently guiding what has spread beyond its place. At other times it means protecting what is still small and tender. More often than not, it simply means making room.

We see this in our own lives more often than we realize. The opportunities we welcome with gratitude can become so abundant that they leave little light for what is still quietly emerging. Perhaps a creative project begins to climb through every spare hour until there is little room for stillness. Or our desire to care for others gradually overshadows our own need for rest.

Nothing here is wrong. The gardener’s work is not to decide which plants are good or bad, but to discern what each one needs so they can flourish together. Like the garden, every part of our lives is simply growing according to its own nature. The invitation is not to uproot, but to notice when everything has begun reaching toward the same piece of sky.

Sometimes the overgrowth is less visible. Grief can slowly spread through every corner of our inner landscape until joy feels like a flower searching for light beneath its branches. We do not ask grief to leave before its season has passed. Instead, we make room for moments of laughter without guilt, for beauty without betrayal, for hope without forgetting. Little by little, we discover that joy and sorrow need not compete for the same piece of sky. Both can belong when each is given enough light.

Making room, then, is not an act of loss but an act of love. It allows every beautiful thing enough light to flourish. The Vine's wisdom is found not in learning what to remove, but in learning where to let the light fall, for discernment is one of the gardener's greatest gifts.

Vine’s Medicine

In the Ogham alphabet, Muin (ᚋ) is traditionally associated with the first harvest of Lughnasadh. Arriving as summer reaches its fullness, Vine invites us to celebrate what has ripened through patient tending while discerning what we will continue to cultivate as the Wheel of the Year turns toward autumn.

The Vine reminds us that growth is one of life’s most beautiful instincts. Every season of abundance eventually asks the same quiet question: What is ready to flourish, and what is asking for a little more light?

A Microcosm of Being

I should like to live like a koi fish,
gliding beneath a curtain of water lilies,
where the whole of the world
is a pond,
and the pond is enough.

A castle of reflected sky,
green shadows,
and drifting petals,
where nothing
asks to be solved.

His small mouth opens,
closes,
opens again,
unbothered by being.

Meanwhile,
I’m forever wandering
the edges
of my own pond,
troubled by distant storms,
and the endless weather
of my own thoughts.

I forget
the cup beside me.
My meal,
waiting to be tasted.
A garden unfolding
just beyond the window.
I do not notice
the beauty
of the castle
I already inhabit.

Perhaps this is both
the burden
and the blessing
of being human.

The koi knows only
his pond.
The houseplant,
its humble pot.
The wren,
the shelter of a hedge.
Each inhabits
a complete world.

Yet I can hold
the whole trembling globe
inside my mind
until it becomes
a shaken snow globe,
every worry swirling,
every certainty
refusing to settle.

Watching him,
I wonder
if wisdom has never been
about escaping life’s currents,
but discovering
the stillness
that lives quietly
within them.

Perhaps every living thing
is entrusted
with a world.
Mine is simply larger
than I was meant
to hold
all at once.

So today,
I return
to the stillness
of the pond
within me.

For perhaps
the smallest worlds
reveal
the largest truths.

The Moon’s Promise

“I love you forever,” said the moon to the stars.

“And I will keep returning,” she promised, “even when the sky is hidden and clouds persuade the world I’ve gone away.

When you are scattered across the longest winter, I’ll gather your light into my quiet hands.

When dawn asks us to part, do not mistake my absence for an ending. The day has its own work, and I have always trusted the dark to bring us home again.

We are not together because we never leave. We are together because we always return.”

The stars answered only by shining,
for some promises are too ancient to need words.

Only we, watching from the earth,
mistake a horizon for goodbye,
or believe that what slips beyond our sight
has slipped beyond our love.

The moon has been trying to tell us otherwise
all along.

My Summer Sweetheart

Every summer
you return to me

in pink ice cream,
melting faster
than we could eat it.

In peaches
from a roadside stand,
warm from the day’s sun,
their sweetness
running down our cheeks.

In the lake,
scattering diamonds
across the afternoon
while we sat
on the cabin deck,
contented with the day
and each other.

In nasturtiums,
small cups of flame
spilling through the garden.

Beneath the old pergola,
where climbing roses
braided themselves overhead,
their petals drifting
onto our shoulders.

At the quiet shore,
where we were
three little ducklings,
happy
to drift together.

Along the boardwalk,
lavender and sage
warming the evening air,
our footsteps lingering
long after dusk.

In fireworks
opening bright flowers
above the dark water,
each bloom fading
before another arrived.

In slow walks
through the garden.

In a picnic
beneath the old maple,
where the shade held us
like an old friend.

In our annual search
for the elusive lake monster,
pretending each ripple
might become
a tale
worth telling.

We found
something rarer.

Summers
that did not know
they were becoming
memories.

That quiet shore
is no more.

The ducks
have found
another place
to gather.

Yet somehow,

the peaches
still ripen,

the roses
still climb,

the wind chimes still sing,

as the lavender
still perfumes
the evening air.

Every summer,
I buy peaches
and sit beside you
in the garden.

Perhaps this is how love
continues,

inside the places
that remember us.

Like the winding road
we once cruised,

where the lake
borrowed the blue
of the mountains,

and the mountains
borrowed the blue
of the sky,

until no one could say
where one ended
and the other begins.

No longer held
by hands,
or time,

love lives

where the memories
meet longing,

in midnight, the moon,
and the stars in the sky,

in the place
where one ends

and the other
begins.

Where the lake remembers us.

Every summer,

The Stargazer

Long ago, there was a woman who returned to the same hillside night after night.

Wrapped in a cloak beneath the summer sky, she studied a cluster of stars she had known since childhood.

One evening, a traveler stopped beside her.

“What do you see?” he asked.

“A hunter carrying a bow” she replied.

The traveler looked up.

“I see a swan,” he said.

Another evening, a shepherd passing through the hills paused to rest beside her.

“What do you see?” she asked.

“I see a river.”

On another night, a child pointed toward a dragon.

Her friend Maggie saw a hare.

The stars had not changed, only the way they were connected.

For many years, the stargazer had believed there was only one story hidden in that patch of sky. Now she found herself wondering how many other stories might be waiting among the same stars.

For the first time, she began looking not only at the stars, but at the patterns they formed together.

The Season of Navigation

Long ago, sailors looked upward for guidance, learning to cross the ocean by watching the night sky. The stars were their companions, orienting them across uncertain waters and helping them find their way home.

For the Celts, too, the sky was not empty space. The landscape was alive with story, movement, memory, and meaning, woven together in rhythm and relationship.

Ancient navigators learned the sky slowly. Returning beneath the same stars night after night, they gradually came to recognize the relationships between scattered points of light. In time, the constellations became trusted guides across uncertain waters.

Perhaps our own lives unfold in much the same way. The same questions return as the seasons turn. It’s only with time that we begin to recognize the relationships between seemingly scattered experiences, discovering the patterns that have been quietly guiding us all along.

This season, we might ask:

✨ What helps us find our bearings when life feels uncertain?

✨ What patterns are shaping our journey?

✨ What becomes visible when we step back far enough to see the larger picture of our lives?

✨ The map is only the beginning.

The Living Landscape

Sanctuary was shaped with this spirit of navigation in mind, as a living landscape woven through the Celtic realms of sea, sky, and earth.

It’s a place of pathways and crossings that invite us to return in our own season, discovering something different each time we walk them.

You may begin your journey beneath the stars or sky, searching for perspective, meaning, or direction.

You may come ashore by way of the sea, carrying grief, longing, uncertainty, or change.

Perhaps you arrive by the path of the earth, seeking rest, rootedness, rhythm, or a quieter way of being.

Over time, these paths begin to cross over and meet, the way scattered stars slowly gather into recognizable constellations.

Within Sanctuary, these same three realms become a gentle rhythm.

The Invitations belong to the sky. Like the stars that guided ancient navigators, they offer perspective, inviting us to step back from the immediacy of our lives and notice patterns that are difficult to see while living within them.

The Pauses belong to the sea. A place of crossing, mystery, and transformation, they invite us beneath the surface of ordinary life to listen for what is moving within us.

The Practices belong to the earth, returning reflection to the body and carrying insight into the ordinary rhythms of daily life.

Together, the Invitation, Pause, and Practice become a living landscape of their own. Like stars scattered across the night sky, each offers its own point of light. Together, they reveal a constellation.

Sanctuary’s Constellation

Whether you have been walking these paths since Sanctuary first began or are discovering them for the first time, you may begin to notice another pattern emerging.

Like the stars themselves, the Invitation, Pause, and Practice are not meant to be experienced in isolation. Their meaning grows through relationship. Read across the season, it’s my hope that each essay quietly illuminates the others, revealing connections that are difficult to see from a single point of view.

Within Linger, the seasonal Practice extends that conversation beyond the page through guided meditation, reflective journaling, and embodied practice, offering another way to continue the journey through the season.

A Cartography of Return

Ancient navigators did not learn the sky in a single night.

Over time, patterns appeared. Questions returned. Relationships, places, practices, and stories became landmarks within their journey.

Perhaps we learn ourselves in much the same way.

Sometimes we recognize the pattern immediately. More often, it's only in retrospect that a conversation carries new meaning, a season of grief reveals unexpected strength, or a path once mistaken for a detour becomes part of the journey home.

Sometimes the landscape itself has not changed. Instead, it is we who have changed through returning.

I’ve noticed this in my own writing. Essays I thought I understood while writing them have continued to unfold long after they were published, revealing relationships I couldn’t yet see. Returning to them later, I sometimes discover they are asking different questions, not because the words have changed, but because I have.

Perhaps you’ve experienced this too.

The invitation this season is to pause long enough to step back and notice this larger pattern emerging. We might ask ourselves:

✨ What connects my experiences?

✨ What stories are slowly revealing themselves?

✨ What constellation(s) might already be taking shape?

The Season Within

As we begin to notice these larger patterns, we may also discover that our inner landscape does not always mirror the season unfolding around us.

Ancient navigators could not orient themselves by pretending the weather was different than it was. They learned to read conditions honestly, recognizing where they were rather than where they believed they should be.

Perhaps our inner lives ask the same honesty of us.

There are seasons when growth looks like rest, when healing asks us to retreat rather than move forward, and when simply continuing is an act of quiet courage.

Finding our way begins by gently recognizing where we truly are.

The Celtic spiral reminds us that growth is rarely linear. We return to familiar questions, old stories, and recurring thresholds, not because we have failed to move forward, but because each return offers a new perspective.

If you find yourself returning to an Invitation, Practice, Pause, or Tree that’s in a different season than the one unfolding outside your window, trust that instinct.

Perhaps that’s where your next crossing waits.

Like the Celtic spiral, Sanctuary is not meant to be travelled in a straight line. You may find yourself returning to familiar places, not because you’ve gone backward, but because each return offers another perspective.

A Tree that first spoke to grief may quietly become a companion in healing. An Invitation may reveal something different after living with it for several weeks. A Pause may bring into focus what was only beginning to stir when the season first opened. Sometimes it is through the seasonal Practice that your quiet discoveries find their way into everyday life, carried beyond the page through meditation, journaling, or a simple moment of noticing.

Each return becomes another crossing, another turn of the spiral, and another star in the constellation.

The Well of Wisdom

Long ago, in the quiet place where story and memory meet, there was a woodland clearing where a sacred well rested beneath the trees.

Its water gathered into a dark, shining pool before slipping quietly beneath moss-covered roots and fern. Those who stumbled upon the place often felt a strange hush settle around them, as though the forest itself were listening.

Around the well grew nine ancient hazel trees, their smooth silver-grey trunks twisting toward the light while their branches opened overhead like welcoming hands.

In autumn, the branches filled with small round nuts hidden within leafy husks, each carrying the soft swell of promise.

The well was said to be a sacred source of wisdom, its waters fed by hidden currents flowing beneath the world itself.

When the hazelnuts ripened, they would sometimes loosen from the branches and fall softly into the dark, shining pool below. Each time they touched the water, the well shimmered faintly, as though something ancient had stirred beneath its surface.

One golden afternoon, as sunlight scattered shifting patterns across the water, nine hazelnuts fell from the trees surrounding the well. One by one, they disappeared into the stillness below, sending slow ripples of light across the pool.

At that moment, an ordinary salmon passed through the stream flowing from the well. He had followed many currents, guided by instincts older than memory itself, unaware of the destiny moving quietly toward him.

When he entered the sacred pool, the hazelnuts drifted gently toward him, and before he understood why, he swallowed them.

The wisdom within the hazelnuts flowed into him like light sinking through deep water, filling him with the memory of rivers, stars, and the hidden patterns binding earth, sky, water, and time.

As the well shimmered beneath the hazel trees and the forest seemed to lean closer in its listening, the salmon became Fintan, keeper of wisdom, memory, and deep time.

Perhaps that is how destiny begins: as a quiet current already moving beneath our lives, carrying us toward who we were always meant to become.

The Season Beneath the Surface

Hazel (Coll), the ninth tree in the Celtic Tree Calendar, shares its lunation with Apple (Quert), rising just before Midsummer (Litha), the Summer Solstice on June 21st. Where Apple invites us to savour the sweetness already woven through ordinary life, Hazel asks us to listen more deeply for what is still quietly unfolding beneath it.

In Celtic tradition, Hazel is the tree of wisdom and deep remembering. The old stories surrounding the sacred well understood that insight cannot be forced. Like hazelnuts sinking beneath dark water or the salmon following unseen currents toward his becoming, wisdom gathers slowly through listening, reflection, and time.

The hazel tree itself carries this quiet character. Rather than rising alone, hazel often grows in clustered stems, forming sheltered groves where light filters softly through green leaves. Its branches bend and weave together while the small round nuts remain hidden within leafy husks until the season is ready to reveal them.

Like the salmon entering the sacred pool, we do not always recognize the moments changing us while we are inside them. Yet something within us is already listening, moving toward what will one day become part of who we are.

Hazel, the Tree of Reflection

Hazel reminds us that wisdom rarely arrives all at once. More often, like the hazelnuts sinking beneath the dark waters of the sacred well, much of what changes us disappears from view before it begins transforming us within.

Step quietly into a hazel grove and the world begins to soften into stillness. Slender trunks rise closely together while soft green leaves flicker overhead in shifting light. The branches bend and weave around one another, forming sheltered spaces where the air feels cool and still even on warm days.

Somewhere deeper within the grove rests the sacred well, its dark surface reflecting leaves, branches, drifting clouds, and your own face leaning quietly over the water. Rings ripple softly outward before settling once more into stillness.

• What reflects back to you there?

• What questions have been waiting patiently beneath the noise of daily life?

• What truths have been unfolding quietly within you long before you had words for them?

Nothing here demands immediate clarity. Water slips quietly beneath the roots while the hush of wind and leaf carries something ancient just beneath hearing.

Fintan did not force the current or seek the wisdom hidden within the well. He simply followed the river long enough to arrive where transformation was waiting.

The current continues still, moving quietly through those willing to pause long enough to listen. The wisdom of the hazelnuts was never meant to remain within the well alone, but to move through the world like hidden water beneath the roots of things.

Like Fintan beside the sacred well, we are changed not only by what we learn, but by what we are willing to listen to deeply enough to receive.

Hazel’s Wisdom

Hazel’s season reminds us how rarely we allow ourselves true stillness, even though much of the world’s wisdom arrives quietly.

So often we search for answers because questions unsettle us. We reach for certainty before uncertainty becomes difficult to carry. We overthink, distract, numb, explain, or prematurely decide because not-knowing feels vulnerable to inhabit for long.

Yet many important truths first arrive this way: incomplete.

A relationship no longer fits, though you cannot explain why. A grief lingers long after you thought you should be “over it.” Exhaustion gathers in the body before the mind is willing to name what can no longer continue. You feel restless inside a life that still appears meaningful from the outside. Something within you begins loosening before the next shape of your life fully reveals itself.

Like the salmon moving through unseen currents toward the sacred well, we do not always recognize transformation while we are inside it. Something within us is often already listening, already responding, long before understanding catches up.

This is where Hazel and Apple gently part ways within the same season. Apple nourishes presence. Hazel deepens perception. Together they teach us how to live inside both enoughness and becoming: how to savour what is beautiful while remaining open to what is still unfolding beneath the surface of our lives.

Sometimes deeper awareness simply means noticing what we are feeling without rushing to fix it, explain it away, distract ourselves, or escape it. Yet this kind of listening is not always peaceful. Often it means remaining beside what feels unfinished within us long enough to hear what it may be trying to say.

Hazel asks whether we can stay long enough to hear what deeper knowing may be coming to the surface.

Like the still waters of the sacred well, understanding deepens when we stop grasping for immediate clarity and remain beside what is still unfolding. A feeling slowly takes shape. A pattern begins to emerge. A truth returns again and again, asking quietly for deeper attention.

• What changes when you stop demanding immediate answers from yourself?

• What becomes possible when uncertainty is no longer something to escape, but something to listen within?

Perhaps wisdom begins there: not in certainty, but in the willingness to remain beside the deeper questions of your life long enough for understanding to slowly reveal itself. Destiny rarely announces itself all at once. More often, it moves beneath our lives like hidden water, quietly guiding us toward the person we are becoming.

The Bells of the Bough

Long ago, where the soul grows still,
A path winds through a hidden hill,
Through orchards wild where apples grew
Beneath soft skies of silver-blue.

No hand had planted grove or seed;
The wind had carried all in need.
Birdsong scattered them through the air,
And roots took hold in silence there.

In spring, pale blossoms drifted wide,
Like fallen stars at evening tide.
In autumn’s hush, the apples flow
Like lanterns lit with amber glow.

The valley lay beyond the day,
Where quiet hearts could lose their way.
Yet when the world grew quiet and slow,
A white doe wandered through the grove.

One evening, as the sky deepened toward blue, a traveller named Oran entered the valley like the first star appearing at dusk.

Oran was no longer young. Years of work and duty had settled upon him like dust.

Once, music had lived easily within him. There had been dancing in kitchens and songs drifting through open windows at evening. But somewhere along the way, the melodies that once made him feel alive had fallen quiet.

He moved through the valley like holly with its thorns, carrying the guarded haste of one long accustomed to hurrying through the world.

Yet even as he walked, something stirred beneath the apple trees. Beneath a leaning branch stood a doe, her coat as bright as the moonlight against the darkening sky.

For a long moment she regarded him with calm, untroubled eyes. Then she turned and moved deeper into the grove.

Oran hesitated. The path led far from where he had intended to go. Yet something within him stirred as the doe disappeared down the path.

As they walked, the sky grew luminous, marbled with coral and lavender, as though the light had softened. The hidden valley seemed to belong to neither day nor night, but to a season all its own.

With every step, Oran’s thoughts drifted lower, settling like leaves through clear water, until only the orchard’s whispering wind remained. Moss clothed the roots in deep green velvet, and silver-limbed branches arched overhead like the vaulted ceiling of an ancient hidden hall.

Deep within the orchard, the white doe led him to a single tree glowing softly in the fading light, then stepped silently aside.

The tree rose in silver boughs, its leaves shimmering like frost beneath moonlight. From every branch hung small apple-shaped bells, delicate and motionless in the hush.

Oran stepped closer.

The moment his fingers brushed the bough, a breath of wind moved through the branches above.

Then the bells began to ring.

The music that followed was unlike anything Oran had ever heard. The bells sang in bright, trembling tones, like moonlight poured into water, like distant stars learning the language of wind.

Their music seemed to rise from everywhere at once: from the silver branches, from the roots deep beneath the earth, and from some forgotten chamber within his own heart.

Memories rose within him like lantern-light on dark water: the forgotten sound of his own voice, a distant voice singing, laughter around a hearth, the quiet ache of grief.

With every chime, time itself seemed to loosen, dissolving like mist above a river at dawn.

Before he realized it, Oran’s feet had begun to move with the music, gently at first, and then with the unguarded grace of one utterly lost in the movement.

It had been many years since he had danced.

When at last the music faded, the silver bough fell still. Something within Oran had awakened.

Old melodies returned to him as he worked, rising softly beneath his breath as though they had only been sleeping. Sometimes, he found himself dancing again, as though moving beside the memory of his wife beyond the veil.

Though the white doe never returned, the music remained, waiting in the hush between seasons and the still places of Oran’s heart.

The Season of Sweetness

🌙 June 13—July 10, Northern Hemisphere ✨ Dec 13—Jan 10, Southern Hemisphere

Apple, the tenth tree in the Celtic Tree Calendar, shares the ninth lunation with Hazel (Coll), rising just before Midsummer (Litha), the Summer Solstice on June 21st. Where Hazel teaches us to let life unfold, Apple invites us to pause long enough to taste the sweetness already here. Together, they hold the tender threshold between longing and fulfilment.

Part of the rose family, apple has long been associated with beauty, healing, love, and enchantment. During this season, the Mead Moon rises luminous overhead, linked with honey, abundance, and the sweetness of life fully savoured.

In Celtic mythology, the apple is the fruit of Avalon, the Isle of Apples: a sacred Otherworld said to lie beyond the western sea. Across old stories, apples appear beside hidden thresholds: silver branches hung with bells, orchards concealed beyond the veil, and fruit that restores not only the body, but the spirit itself.

These ancient echoes live within Oran’s journey into the hidden valley, where he discovers the silver bough whose music awakens what grief had silenced within him. The bells do not erase his sorrow, but remind him of something he had forgotten: that beauty still exists beside grief, and that the heart can learn to sing once again.

In this way, Apple becomes more than a symbol of sweetness alone. It is the tree of remembrance, restoration, and quiet reawakening: the moment the music returns to the soul after a long season of silence.

Apple, the Orchard’s Orchestra

Step quietly into an orchard and the world begins to soften. Apple branches bend low and outward, inviting you beneath their canopy. Light moves differently here, filtered through silver-green leaves that shimmer softly in the wind.

In spring, blossoms gather along the dark limbs in clouds of white and blush-pink while bees drift lazily from tree to tree. By autumn, the boughs grow heavy with fruit: pale green apples and deep crimson ones too, their skins warmed by rain, sunlight, and cool evening air.

To bear fruit, apple trees depend upon one another. Bees carry pollen from blossom to blossom, weaving unseen connections between neighbouring trees until entire orchards bloom and ripen together, roots drinking from the same earth below.

And everywhere, there is music.

Wind whispering through leaves. Bees humming among the blossoms. Apples falling softly into the grass. Standing there, it is easy to understand the old stories of silver boughs hung with bells and hidden orchards beyond the veil. An orchard already feels like a threshold place: half garden, half dream.

Perhaps this is why orchards have long been places of gathering and remembrance. Beneath their branches, people linger to share sweetness, stories, grief, and song, until the heart remembers how to listen again.

Apple’s Wisdom

There’s music in ordinary life too, though we often move too quickly through our days to hear it.

You make a cup of tea without tasting it. You drive home replaying old conversations and miss the sunset entirely. Someone you love is speaking, but part of you is already somewhere else, reaching toward tomorrow.

Apple invites us to slow enough to notice what nourishes us: the warmth of a mug between your hands, the scent released when an apple is cut open, evening light gathering across the kitchen floor, wind moving through an open window while laughter drifts from another room.

Like Oran beneath the silver bough, we sometimes forget the music still living quietly around us. Sweetness slips past when we are too busy fearing uncertainty, rehearsing the future, or waiting for some distant moment when life finally feels settled enough to inhabit fully.

Perhaps this is why so many old Irish stories and songs carry joy beside sorrow. The sweetness of life was never understood as permanence, but as presence.

The French call this joie de vivre. In Italy, it lives within la dolce vita: the sweetness of life. Across many cultures, there is a shared understanding that beauty becomes more precious, not less, because it cannot be held forever.

Apple reminds us to linger a little longer beneath the branches, listening for the quiet music already woven through our lives.

The Unsettling

A few evenings ago, I went walking at dusk along a narrow path that winds through the hills near my home.

Rain had passed through earlier that afternoon, leaving the earth dark and fragrant beneath the long grasses. The air still carried that soft dampness that comes after spring rain, when everything feels suspended between seasons.

As I walked, I became aware of how unsettled I felt inwardly.

The sky was heavy with layered cloud, though streaks of pale gold still lingered near the horizon. Wind moved through the grasses in long rippling waves, while the trees along the edge of the path bent softly in the evening light, their leaves flashing silver-green each time they turned toward the sky.

At first, I could not have told you exactly what it was. I noticed the feeling living in my heart and body far more than in my thoughts. There was a tender ache beneath the surface of things, like something unresolved following me like a shadow along the path.

I felt grief’s familiar heaviness low in my chest. There it was: the longing to reach for someone who was no longer here, as though part of me still expected their presence to return beside me in ordinary moments. An absence that followed me everywhere, lingering beneath the wind in the grasses and the fading gold along the horizon.

As I continued walking, I began to realize how much of this season I had been carrying that feeling with me without ever fully naming it.

Paths & Longings

This season has carried more uncertainty than I expected.

There are moments lately when I no longer fully recognize the shape of my own life.

Some days I feel hopeful that I am moving toward a life that fits me more honestly. Other days, self-doubt arrives quickly and convincingly, asking whether I am enough.

Alongside that uncertainty, I have also noticed how much grief I still carry.

There are losses that cannot be solved or outgrown, absences that remain no matter how much time passes around them. There are beings we continue reaching for long after they are no longer here, and no amount of personal growth changes that longing.

Sometimes the hardest part is not that the world stops, but that it continues.

This has been one of the deepest crossings of Beltane for me this year.

Everywhere, the world seems to lean toward fullness. Trees leaf out almost overnight. Gardens rise quickly from the dark earth. The days stretch themselves longer toward summer as nature remembers how to move forward again.

So why has grief made me uncertain of that same movement and fullness within my own life? Inwardly, I felt hollow and tender beside all this beauty and becoming.

Evening light turns the fields gold. Birds still call across the hills at dusk. Beauty keeps arriving, even while part of me remains unconvinced that I will ever fully emerge from this ache.

There were moments this spring when grief made me feel as though I was standing still, watching the world move steadily forward while my heart stubbornly remained turned toward what it was missing.

As I have moved through this season, I have found myself wondering what your heart may be carrying, and what it might be missing too.

Crossings & Carryings

As I walked that evening, I found myself thinking about the story I wrote in this season’s Invitation about Maggie and the moment she left her letter beneath the small cairn of stones before stepping into the crossings.

At first, I think I imagined that moment too simply.

I imagined crossings as transformation itself, as though leaving something behind meant emerging lighter on the other side, able to release the old story and step more cleanly into the new one. I imagined uncertainty falling away once the crossing had been made, as though clarity itself might be waiting just beyond the threshold.

But standing there on the path with the wind moving through the grasses around me, I realized crossings do not work that way.

Leaving something beneath the cairn does not mean it no longer hurts, just as choosing a new direction does not erase fear, and grief does not disappear simply because the season has changed around us.

More often, we carry the old ache with us into the new landscape, bringing our longings and unfinishedness alongside everything still becoming.

The crossing itself does not remove these things so much as slowly changing the way we learn to carry them.

That realization stayed with me as I continued walking.

The path curved upward along the hillside before opening into a clearing where the grasses grew shorter beneath the wind. I stopped there for a while, listening to the evening settle around me while birds called across the distant fields and the first chill of night moved into the air.

Standing there beneath the darkening sky, I could feel how tired I had become from trying to force myself into something new before I actually felt ready. So much of this season had been shaped by an inward pressure toward some visible reassurance that I was finally moving in the right direction.

As I turned back toward home, the sky had deepened into evening blue while the wind had begun to quiet around me. Along the edge of the path, the grasses swayed softly in the fading light, moving in their own rhythm.

The grasses simply followed the season in the way grasses do, bending gently with the wind.

Standing there for a moment, I realized perhaps this season was never asking me to become fearless or fully certain.

Perhaps it was only asking me to listen more honestly to the life already moving within me.

Softening & Stillness

Standing there beneath the darkening sky, I began noticing that although many things in my life still felt unresolved, something within me had changed this season after all.

I was no longer fighting my own rhythm in the same way.

Earlier in the season, I believed movement required certainty, confidence, and visible progress, as though I needed to feel fearless before I could trust where my life was leading me. If I could not move boldly, perhaps I believed I was failing to move at all.

Somewhere between the crossings and the heather, between listening and walking, something softer had begun taking shape.

I began noticing my body sooner when it was overwhelmed instead of waiting until exhaustion forced me to stop. I began allowing slower days without immediately treating them as personal failures. I began recognizing how often fear disguises itself as striving, convincing me to stay busy so I would not have to listen too closely to myself.

Slowly, I began understanding that uncertainty itself is not proof that I am on the wrong path.

Some landscapes can only be walked slowly, and some truths only become visible after we have lived beside the questions for a while, allowing them to soften and unfold in their own time rather than demanding immediate clarity from them.

Perhaps this season has been inviting you into a similar kind of noticing.

One of the gentlest ways I have found to notice myself more honestly is through walking.

Something about moving slowly through a landscape softens the constant pressure to solve or figure everything out at once. The body settles into rhythm. Thoughts loosen slightly. Feelings we have been carrying quietly sometimes rise more clearly into awareness beneath the movement.

It helps, too, when there is nowhere particular you are trying to arrive. Without a destination, the walk becomes less about reaching something and more about paying attention to what is already present within and around you.

If you wish, take a slow walk sometime in the coming days. Simply walk slowly enough to notice your own rhythm beneath the movement.

Notice how your body feels as you move through the landscape. Notice where you tighten and where you soften. Pause if you come to a crossing, a bend in the path, or a quiet place where the wind moves through trees or grasses.

As you walk, allow yourself to listen inwardly, not for answers or certainty, but simply for honesty.

You might gently ask yourself:

• What has been quietly asking for my attention this season?

• Where have I been softening rather than forcing?

• What would it mean to trust myself more gently through uncertainty?

You do not need to leave your walk transformed, nor do you need to leave with answers.

Perhaps it is enough, for now, to walk gently beside yourself, listening honestly to what is still becoming within you.

When Anne invited me to share this story with her Soulful Seedlings community, I was delighted. Stories and meditations often travel the same woodland paths, carrying us from imagination into lived experience.

So find a comfortable place, settle in, and allow yourself to wander through an emerald woodland and see what awaits beyond a willow door.

The Blossoming Belles

There are forests folded deep in green,
where light slips through the leaves unseen,
where moss remembers every tread,
and laughter lingers where the Fair Folk fled.

Where blossoming belles bow and sway,
ringing softly in the emerald day,
and paths unspool, then turn anew,
as though the woodland chooses you.

There the branches breathe and bend,
and root with rain and shadow blend,
while glimmering lights drift low between
the fern-soft hollows lush with green.

Walk gently there when dusk bells sing.
The forest hears everything.

It was early in spring when Enya found the clearing, at that rain-soaked turning of the year when the earth seemed to bloom upward in every shade of emerald and jade.

She drew a deep breath into her lungs, delighting in the wet mossy fragrance of bark, rainwater, and dark living earth. Around her the whole forest seemed to breathe with her in the slow green hush of things awakening.

The woodland did not seem grown as much as woven. Green was everywhere, climbing the ash trunks in twisting ropes of ivy the colour of bottle glass, gathering thickly along the roots of ancient hazel trees where the moss rose in soft velvety folds beneath the shadowed trees.

Ferns unfurled themselves from the woodland floor in slow curling spirals jeweled with rain, while foxgloves and bluebells drifted beneath the branches like pools of violet and lavender mist.

As Enya walked, the woodland path began to narrow, its edges softened by thick velvety emerald-green moss climbing over roots and stones. Ferns brushed gently against her skirts, while pale blue-white lights drifted soundlessly between the trunks before vanishing again among the ivy.

Somehow, instead of returning home as she usually did, she had wandered in the opposite direction, admiring stones and carrying them in her pockets. It was only later that she realized she had become lost. By then, she had already discovered the clearing hidden just beyond the braided willow door.

When she stepped into the clearing, she was no longer certain how long she had been walking, for time seemed suspended from its ordinary rhythms. She paused at last and stood listening beneath the rain-dark branches.

Around her, the woodland had grown quietly attentive, as though it had been waiting for her arrival. Faint blue-white glimmers drifted between the trunks like fragments of moonlight moving low through the undergrowth before vanishing once more among the ferns.

It was then, along the moss-lined path, when she noticed the footprints.

One appeared softly in the moss ahead of her, delicate and impossibly small. Moments later another formed farther along the path, followed by another, each print lingering briefly before fading into the emerald green.

Then, just beyond a bend in the path, she caught sight of her.

A woman was standing among the foxgloves beneath the hazel branches, her dark hair threaded with pale blossoms while a silver-green cloak drifted softly around her.

Faint blue-white lights gathered around her figure, glimmering against the moss-dark woodland behind her until she seemed less like someone standing within the forest than someone who belonged wholly to it.

When the branches stirred overhead, she vanished again into light and shadow. Farther along the path, another tiny footprint appeared in the moss as though quietly beckoning Enya onward.

At last the moss beneath Enya’s feet rose in thick luminous folds around an earthen mound encircled with hazel trees, their branches woven thick with fern and trailing ivy. It was as if the woodland had gathered itself there like a hidden garden beneath the emerald canopy.

At first Enya mistook the earthen mound for part of the forest itself, until slowly the shape beneath revealed itself: the smooth rise of earth too rounded to be natural, stones half-hidden beneath moss and lichen, and pale roots threading downward into the dark hollow beneath the hill.

And there, growing all around the mound beneath the hazel branches, were the blossoms.

Clusters of lily of the valley rose from the emerald moss in soft white drifts, their delicate bell-shaped flowers hanging from slender green stems like drops of moonlight gathered beneath the trees.

Rainwater clung to their petals in trembling silver beads, their fragrance cool and sweet and green, carrying the freshness of spring rain and crushed leaves.

As the blossoms stirred, the sound of faint chimes drifted through the woodland hush, so soft and delicate that Enya thought to name them, right then and there, the blossoming belles.

Around her, the woodland moved in the same quiet rhythm as the chiming bells. For the first time in a very long while, Enya did not reach in her mind toward what might come next. Instead, she remained within the stillness of her senses long enough to feel how the woodland held her without asking anything in return.

It seemed to her that the wind itself carried the same quiet weight she had been holding for so long: the pull of grief, the shape of what had been lost, the feeling of being held within a place inside herself that could not move.

For a moment she felt how easily sorrow could root itself within a life, settling so deeply into the heart that nothing beyond it seemed able to grow. Yet everywhere around her the blossoms rose from the moss-dark earth, each luminous bell suspended beneath its slender stem.

And what she found there was not the bright, fleeting joy she had so often chased, but something gentler and deeper: the understanding that grief and beauty had been growing together all along. One had not driven the other away. Like the blossoms rising from the dark earth beneath them, beauty had continued to bloom within the very life sorrow had touched.

She drew a breath, and it deepened.

The blossoming bells continued trembling softly around the mound, like chimes moving through the sunlit avenues of the woodland.

Years later, Enya still could hear the melodious sound of those blossoming bells.

And whenever she did, she would weave the magic she had found in the woodland that day into stories that captured the emerald moss beneath her feet, the drifting lights among the ferns, and the blossoms ringing softly beneath the trees.

Again and again she would return to the wisdom she had discovered in that hidden place, that beauty does not wait for sorrow to leave before it begins to bloom.

The Wisdom of the Woodland

Perhaps the woodland isn’t as far away as it seems.

Perhaps it lingers wherever rain darkens the earth, wherever moss softens the roots of old trees, or wherever a breeze moves gently through leaves overhead. Perhaps the music of the blossoming belles has always belonged to such moments, waiting quietly beneath the noise of everyday life.

Perhaps all you have to do is notice the places where the world asks you to pause and listen.

You might carry these questions with you as you wander:

🌿 What in your life has been asking for tenderness rather than striving?

✨ Where have sorrow and beauty been growing side by side in your own life?

🌿 What truths become easier to hear when the world around you grows quiet?

✨ What within you may already be blooming, slowly and in its own time?

And if you wish, you might choose to linger, listening for the faint music of the Blossoming Bells and the quiet wisdom hidden within the emerald hush of the woodland.

The Crossings Within

Imagine walking along a hillside path where the heather holds the night’s rain and the air carries the sweetness of spring.

Mist drifts through the valley as dawn stretches across the hills in pale bands of lavender and gold.

You walk without hurrying, the earth beneath your feet uneven and alive, shaped by countless seasons before your own.

Ahead, the path divides. One trail climbs sharply upward into stone and wind. Another disappears into a grove of ✨Hawthorn and ✨Oak trees, their blossoms glowing in the morning light against the dark leaves of intertwined ✨Holly. A third path curves quietly along the hillside, vanishing beyond a fold before you can see where it leads.

You pause, feeling the need to know which direction is right before stepping forward.

Yet the hills offer no answer.

Then, from the edge of the heather, movement catches your eye.

A hare stands farther down the slope, still enough that it seems woven into the landscape. After a moment, it begins to move, not in a straight line, but in long curving arcs that follow the shape of the hillside.

The hare travels by the rhythm of its own knowing.

As you watch it disappear into the mist, something begins to soften.

Beneath the vastness of the sky, you begin to walk again.

The Season of Alignment

Beltane is a season of energy, growth, and movement.

Across the natural world, what has rested quietly begins to rise. Trees unfurl their leaves, rivers swell with snowmelt, and fields turn green beneath longer days.

Yet nature never rushes.

Modern life rarely leaves room for natural rhythms. We move from task to task trying to keep up, measuring our days by accomplishments. Over time, we can lose our sense of our natural rhythms and what feels sustainable.

The signs often appear quietly: tiredness rest does not fix, irritability, or a lingering sense of longing or disconnection.

Beltane invites us to notice these places as thresholds.

In nature, thresholds are places where one landscape becomes another: shoreline becoming sea, forest opening into meadow, mountains softening into hills. Fault lines and canyons mark places where the earth has shifted beneath pressure.

Some thresholds happen suddenly. Others unfold so slowly we barely notice the reshaping.

After glaciers retreat, the earth slowly rises through a process called isostatic rebound. For thousands of years, immense sheets of ice pressed the land downward. Even after the glaciers melt, the earth continues reshaping itself long afterward.

Our inner landscapes move slowly through thresholds this way too.

There are seasons when the shoreline of certainty gives way to the open sea of change. Times when the dense forests of fear and grief merge into a meadow that’s bursting with joy and new hope. Mountains that we once carried within ourselves soften after years of healing.

Other thresholds arrive suddenly: the ending of a relationship, becoming a parent, leaving a career, receiving difficult news, or losing someone we love. The moment itself may be clear, but what follows unfolds much more slowly. Grief and healing continue reshaping us long after the first crossing has passed.

The Wisdom of the Hare’s Path

In Celtic folklore, hares are associated with intuition. Their paths rarely follow direct lines. They pause suddenly, double back, disappear into long grass, then emerge somewhere unexpected, as though guided by the land rather than certainty.

Following our intuition often looks more like the hare’s path than the direct roads we try to map. We pause. We circle back through old fears and familiar questions. We disappear into uncertainty for a time before emerging changed.

Intuition and insight often appear briefly when we pause along the path. Like the hare moving through the heather, every act of noticing deepens our relationship with ourselves and helps us recognize the quieter truths already moving within us.

Flower Moon & Hawthorn

Old pale shimmers silent in the hedgerows, raising shy eyes to greet the crystalline orb of the ancient Flower Moon.

Her call is strong.

Hawthorn has been waiting.

He stretches, yawns, winks as moonbeam seeks him out, awakening the magic — the flowering, the ritual, the hope.

The pull of this time — Beltane — is as ancient as the land itself.

Old memories course through Hawthorn’s veins as he anchors further into the warming ground. Sap rises within him, painting exquisite rose on the waiting cream canvas. Masculine and feminine, balance and harmony.

Song thrush stirs on her newly made home, feeling the smooth warmth of speckled eggshell blue through ruffled feathers. She too opens an eye as a breeze ruffles through her hawthorn bower.

She gazes knowingly, her bright eye reflecting old pale magic in its black depths.

Moon and Hawthorn intertwine, circling her musical heart.

As her first nesting season begins, she opens herself to Hawthorn and moon’s powerful, fertile, translucent white light.

She is protected.

Music surges through her, bursting into the fading night air. Her wishes tumble, captured and sealed, held for the season by the fairy froth unfolding — protective hope, Hawthorn’s magic.

Letters Amongst the Hedgerows

The photographs arrived just after dusk while rain moved softly across the thawing fields beyond Holly’s kitchen window.

In the first, clusters of hawthorn blossom opened in soft shades of white and blush pink, so luminous against the dark branches they seemed almost lit from within while blackbirds moved like shadows through the trees.

In the second, dark holly leaves gleamed beneath the rain, their sharp edges silvered against the deep green.

The third photograph lingered longest in Holly’s mind.

Hawthorn and holly tangled together beside an old stone wall, pale blossom woven through dark evergreen leaves, thorn resting against thorn beneath the soft Beltane light.

Holly had only ever thought of holly as a winter thing. Bright berries against snow. Glossed leaves sharp enough to cut careless fingers in December.

She had never seen the blossoms before, tiny white flowers opening quietly from the centre of the thorn-dark leaves, delicate as though the tree had been keeping some softer version of itself hidden all along.

“It feels,” the message beneath the photographs read, “as though the whole world is holding its breath before summer arrives.”

Outside, the river still carried broken sheets of ice along its dark current.

Spring had arrived late to the Canadian prairies this year, lingering uncertainly at the edges of the land as though winter had not yet fully agreed to loosen its hold. Along the fence lines, old snow rested in the hollows beneath leafless poplars while meltwater moved steadily through the dark earth toward the river, carrying the sound of release across the fields.

Before they had ever met in person, Holly was beginning to know Hawthorn through story and language first. Through the way she described dusk as though it were something living. Through her attention to rainwater, birdsong, and thorn trees blooming softly against the dark.

Fear had taught Holly to survive through perfection, through competence, through keeping every sharp edge carefully polished so grief could never fully catch hold of her. If you let someone matter, loss would find a way inside eventually.

Beyond the window, the river sounded restless tonight, as though something beneath it had finally begun pushing against the long season of holding still.

Finally, she typed:

“The river sounds awake tonight.”

Across the ocean, Hawthorn read the reply beside the open window of her cottage, the scent of rain and flowering thorn drifting softly through the room. Beyond the garden, the first warm week of Beltane had filled the lanes with blossom while birdsong drifted through the evening air.

Holly’s words felt steadying to her, like firelight held carefully against cold weather.

Though they had exchanged only fragments so far, Hawthorn could already feel herself leaning toward the warmth inside Holly’s careful sentences, toward the steadiness beneath them.

Fear had shaped Hawthorn differently. It taught her to soften herself before others could turn away, to disappear after moments of closeness, to leave first rather than risk the deeper wound of being left behind.

The correspondence deepened quietly after that, threading itself through the ordinary rituals of their days like lantern light moving through darkened windows.

Little by little, they began carrying one another’s landscapes within them.

Hawthorn found herself listening for geese overhead during her walks through the blossom-dark lanes, while Holly began noticing thorn trees along the riverbank she had passed a hundred times without truly seeing.

Across the ocean, Hawthorn sat very still beside the open window while the words settled quietly into the room around her.

For a long while she did not answer.

Then finally:

“I think fear grew thorns through both of us,” she wrote. “Just in different directions.”

Outside, blackbirds stitched music through the deepening Beltane dusk while beneath the flowering hawthorn the dark leaves of holly continued quietly shining in the rain.

The Season of Thresholds

Holly (Tinne), the eighth tree of the Celtic Tree Calendar rises in the weeks around Beltane, as the Dryad Moon lingers overhead.

Beltane arrives at the threshold between seasons, when the dark half of the year begins loosening its hold and the world turns once more toward warmth, blossom, and becoming. Thorn and flower exist side by side here, protection softening toward openness as the long work of endurance slowly gives way to renewal.

In the story of Holly and Hawthorn, the landscapes mirror this crossing. One woman stands within the lingering cold of the Canadian prairies while the other walks beneath the flowering trees of an English spring. Yet both are moving through the same tender unfolding, learning that fear may protect the heart for a time but cannot nourish it forever.

Though both holly and hawthorn grow in Canada and England, they do not inhabit each landscape in quite the same way. Holly, evergreen and resilient, thrives more naturally in Britain’s damp winters and ancient woodlands, while in Canada it appears more sparingly, often carrying a sense of rarity and shelter against harsher cold. Hawthorn, too, changes with place: in England it gathers along old hedgerows and village paths in clouds of May blossom, while in Canada its cousins root themselves more quietly along riverbanks and prairie edges, weathering wider skies and sharper seasons.

Their botanical names, Ilex (Holly) and Crataegus (Hawthorn), carry the old intelligence of the plants themselves, shaping the emotional landscapes of the story. Holly, evergreen even in winter’s hardest season, speaks to the instinct to endure through stillness, to survive by holding firm, by keeping some tender part of the self protected beneath glossy leaves and sharp edges. Hawthorn, with its thorned branches and brief, luminous flowering, speaks to a different courage: the willingness to bloom despite vulnerability, to risk sweetness and visibility even while knowing the world can wound.

Between them lives an ancient tension familiar to many hearts, the pull between guarding and opening, between endurance and surrender. In the story, Holly is learning that survival cannot be her only season while Hawthorn is learning that tenderness is not the absence of strength, but another form of it entirely.

This season invites us to listen for what is true for you beneath the surface of your life: whether that’s a longing for connection, a softening toward trust, or the first small stirrings of warmth after a long inward winter.

Holly’s Medicine

Holly— Tinne—is a name that refers to a staff, rod, or metal bar: something forged, strengthened, and tempered through pressure. Its Ogham symbol rises as a single line marked by crossing strokes, like a spine strengthened by what it has endured. Holly enters the dark half of the Celtic year carrying the quiet wisdom of protection and resilience.

In Celtic traditions, holly was planted near thresholds and homes as a guardian tree, believed to ward off harm and steady the spirit through winter’s long nights. Yet holly’s lesson is not only about defense. Beneath its sharp leaves remain vivid berries and evergreen life, reminding us that the heart can stay alive and luminous even in difficult seasons.

To walk with Holly is not to harden completely, but to learn the delicate balance between boundaries and openness, between protecting the self and still allowing warmth, tenderness, and connection to endure.

The Hare on the Hillside Path

There are moments in life when something restless within you begins to shift.

This is the season that meets you there, with an invitation to move before you understand why.

Maggie followed the Highland path at dusk, where the heather thinned and the earth showed her age in the hill’s stratified layers. She carried a folded letter in her pocket, its crease worn pale from being opened and closed too many times.

At the top of the hill, she wrapped herself in her favourite plaid blanket and sat, letting the stillness gather. The glen stretched below while the mountains rose above, opening like a question she had been turning over for years. She tried to make sense of it, but her thoughts refused to settle.

Lately, every decision had felt the same: one path dividing into another, then another, until she could no longer tell which direction was truly forward.

Restless, she pulled at her braid until it loosened, the small act feeling larger than it should, as though something in her life were quietly coming undone.

She let her hands fall and lifted her gaze. The stars were shining. At first they seemed scattered, but slowly they gathered into shape—the curve of a back, the lift of ears, the arc of a body caught mid-motion. A hare forming out of the dark, leaping, held in that suspended moment between one place and another.

She traced it until it felt less distant, more like something remembered, and as she watched, the world began to shift.

Her limbs folded inward as her senses sharpened and scattered, and she was no longer a girl but a hare beneath the vast expanse of sky. The ground hummed through her feet, the wind speaking in textures rather than sound, each blade of grass holding a story, each shadow a doorway.

She moved because, in this body, movement came before thought. She ran, tracing lines that curved, doubled back, vanished, and reappeared, until what she had once called a path revealed itself as something else—not a line to follow, but a pattern she was already part of.

When dawn came, she was once again herself, lying where she had begun. The glen and mountains had not changed, but she had.

The letter was still in her pocket. Her thoughts were no longer tangled; they revealed themselves as crossings—lines that met, parted, and met again.

She took the letter out, held it for a moment, then placed it beneath a small cairn of stones at the edge of the path.

She rose, brushed the dew from her sleeves, and stepped forward—not onto a single path, but into the crossings.

There is no straight way through a life, she realized. The path begins when we leave what is familiar. It deepens when we learn to notice. It becomes our own in the returning—not ahead, but inward, where the circling leads us back to who we are.

The Season of Movement

Falling around May 1st, midway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, is the Celtic quarter-festival of Beltane.

Beltane marks a turning point—the threshold into the Light Half of the year. If Samhain draws us inward, Beltane invites outward expression, as what has been held in the ground begins to rise into growth.

In Celtic traditions, Beltane was celebrated with communal bonfires lit on hilltops. Passing between them marked a crossing into the new season, where protection, blessing, and renewal were sought as one phase of the year gave way to the next.

In ancient times, it was natural to move with the rhythms of the land. The practice of ‘flitting to the shielings’ in Scotland—moving seasonally to higher summer pastures—reflects this rhythm. Beltane is a reminder to return to these cycles and rhythms and, like Maggie, to notice how this movement is shifting within you.

While Beltane shares the calendar with May Day, these traditions are culturally distinct. May 1st is also International Workers’ Day. Historian Peter Linebaugh once noted that all three share a strong undercurrent of change: a refusal to accept what holds a life back or wears it down, and a desire to move toward something more aligned.

Seen this way, Beltane invites you to notice whether what you are doing on the outside matches what feels true on the inside. What are you accepting that isn’t working? What’s beginning to move within you toward change?

Nature Moves in Cycles

Nature does not move in straight lines. You can see this in the dark and light halves of the Celtic year, one moving inward, the other outward.

You can see it in the turning of the day, in the movement of the sun—rising, peaking, descending—and in the phases of the moon: beginning, building, fullness, and release.

Across a year, what unfolds is echoed within a day, reminding you that no state is permanent, but part of a larger movement. These patterns exist around you and within you. Where do you notice yourself in this rhythm?

The same is true of the seasons. They may appear fixed, yet are made up of smaller, shifting patterns. Within a single day, warmth and cold, sun and cloud, stillness and wind arrive and pass within hours. What has been shifting for you lately, even subtly? What feels different than it did a few days or weeks ago?

In nature, storms and stillness exist side by side. In modern life, this is easy to miss, replaced by the idea that days should be the same and productivity should be constant. Out of Step in Spring

As the energy of Beltane rises, you might begin to think there’s only one way to meet the season: outward, expansive, full of motion and momentum. But that version of spring does not hold everyone.

For those of us who live within bodies that require care, pacing, and rest, this season can create a subtle sense of being out of step. For me, it shows up readily as misalignment.

Spring moves quickly—growing, expanding, asking for more. As an introvert living with chronic pain and fatigue, I burn out rapidly when I try to match that energy. I push when my body asks me to pause.

What I desire, need, or feel on the inside begins to move in a different direction than the life I live on the outside—especially in how I spend my time, energy, and attention. It becomes a pattern of movement that no longer feels like my own.

This is what a shift can look like: the space between what you need and what’s expected of you.

It can show up when your energy doesn’t match your workload, your values don’t align with how you spend your time, or you’ve said yes to things that no longer fit who you are or what you can give.

It can happen when you need rest but keep pushing, or need quiet in a world that moves fast. Over time, it can feel like you’re moving through a life that doesn’t quite belong to you.

The first step is noticing it and naming it honestly. Not “I’m not keeping up,” but “this doesn’t fit me right now.” That shift in how you speak to yourself matters. It eases the pressure to fix yourself and creates space to consider what might need to change.

Shifting is a signal. It’s your body, your energy, or your inner life saying something isn’t quite right. The goal isn’t to force yourself to match the world around you, but to find a way of moving that fits who you are and what you need—even if it looks quieter or slower than the season seems to ask.

It might mean doing less in a day, or building in rest before you feel exhausted instead of after. It might mean choosing one or two things that truly matter and letting the rest wait. These are small shifts, but they bring you back into alignment.

Spring’s energy can be an invitation, not a demand. Not everything grows through visible expansion.

Remember that in nature, outward movement and stillness exist side by side, often within the same day. Growth can also happen through pacing, attention, and choosing what is sustainable.

If your rhythm feels different right now, it may be asking to be listened to—not as a break from the pattern, but as part of it. Like the crossings Maggie stepped into, it isn’t a straight path forward, but a shifting one that reveals itself as you move.

And that, too, is a way of moving with the season.

A Beltane Blessing

May the fire of this turning season

May the seeds you have tended in unseen places
find their moment to rise —
not all at once,
but in the rhythm that is right for you.

even when it feels uncertain,

Oh Spring, Where Art Thou?

I stand at my kitchen window, hands submerged in warm dishwater, tracing the silky bubbles rising up from the sink when I see her—a hare crossing my front garden, her paws pressing soft, fleeting prints into the damp soil.

For a moment, everything stills: the quiet hum of the house, the rhythm of water, the small hearth of the kitchen, all set against the cold beyond the glass.

She seems less bothered than I am, moving lightly, as if the ground barely holds her. I sigh. It’s the fifth false spring this season. At this rate, it’ll be May before the snow melts from my garden.

¹ Around here, false springs are like a seasonal plot twist, brief interludes of warmth that coax the garden into growth before winter has done its work. The sun lingers, the soil softens, and buds begin to open. Then winter returns, a relentless antagonist, reminding us the story is still unfolding.

It’s not just unfortunate; it can alter the entire arc of the growing season, reshaping what blooms, what falters, and what must begin again.

As I linger at the window, I feel a dissonance—the pull within me toward transformation alongside old, familiar patterns I can’t quite leave behind.

It’s a fitting metaphor for the gentle reframing of my own journey this month.

The Season of Hope?

The truth is, I feel caught in the stillness.

It’s as if this long winter has settled deep into my bones and forgotten the way out. Time lingers there, stretching the days before spring into something slow and suspended.

My last post was about a Wise Old Oak, and somehow I find myself still immersed in that story. It’s as if I’m walking in Sorcha’s shoes, the weight of unfinished things pressing at the edges of my awareness.

May 1st will mark six months for me as a writer on Substack. Somehow, that anniversary opens up a question I’ve been trying not to ask myself:

What does success mean to me as a writer?

Part of me keeps thinking that by now I should be more established in my freelance writing career, more grounded in my rhythm on Substack, and more certain about where all of this is headed.

But in the absence of that certainty, my mind begins rehearsing a different story — one where I’m somehow failing.

And beneath that story, I’m starting to recognize who’s really speaking.

My old friend, fear.

She’s one of my besties, always nearby, trying to keep me safe in the only ways she knows how.

Yet recently, I’ve been nurturing a new friendship with hope. I’m still getting to know her, unsure if I can trust her yet.

So I begin to gather what is real: shaping it into a few truths I can hold onto:

• I get to keep choosing this dream of writing full-time, even when I’m not sure where it’s leading.

• I’ve created a small sanctuary—a home and garden where something long-awaited in me feels safe enough to begin.

• There’s a path here, even when I can’t quite see it, slowly taking shape beneath my feet.

• And my new friend, hope, is beside me in the writing, along with a community that meets it with such generosity.

What I’ve Learned this Season

I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees.

This season feels full of terrain I’m still learning to walk.

I close my eyes, returning to Sorcha’s oak tree, and imagine myself sitting beneath its reassuring presence, even if it’s still too cold to be outside.

I pick up a pencil and begin to draw, asking: Where am I learning to move, rather than hold still?

Like this season, my life has been shaped by more stops and starts—more false springs than I can count.

Sometimes I think of myself as a cat with nine careers instead of lives, of all the times I’ve had to say I used to do one thing, but now I do something else.

The hardest part is not the starting over, but the moments when I don’t see myself clearly—when I forget who I am and the distance I’ve traveled seems to disappear.

So I turn to nature.

This season, I’ve noticed that plants don’t stop trying. They don’t know the calendar, so they adjust and conserve, and they don’t interpret frost as failure.

Fruit trees are especially vulnerable in a false spring. The loss doesn’t show up right away, but later, in the fruit of what never comes to be.

There’s something deeply human in that.

I haven’t had one false start—but many. Over time, loss and a fear of uncertainty have settled in.

Not all at once, but slowly, I feel it in my nervous system as an unsteadiness when growth begins, a desire for safety taking hold along with the urge to plan everything so it unfolds according to my own timing.

What I hear in myself becomes harder to trust, and I begin to hesitate, to hold back.

As I sit in my garden in the first real warmth of the season, the Canada geese fly overhead, reminding me that some rhythms still know the way, and not everything has been lost.

This isn’t failure, but the seed of wisdom of the oak, asking for patience as it grows into the vast, sheltering tree that is my life.

There’s comfort in knowing that each time a layer of snow melts back, something new is revealed within me—another way of hearing myself more clearly.

It feels right, somehow, that the hare has returned to my garden, a small, living reminder that growth does not follow a straight line, but a winding path that, somehow, leads us home.

Coming to Rest

I find myself learning how to rest as I wait. I finish the dishes and step away from my writing, letting the afternoon settle.

While hope has been a steady companion lately, she’s broken my heart a few times before. Fear still whispers, don’t trust her. I’m beginning to see that when she’s absent from my life, there’s a brokenness in that too.

I reach for Meredith Heller’s book on my coffee table. Inside, I find a simple writing exercise—an invitation to translate what I’m feeling into form.

It feels like the right kind of practice for this moment: writing a recipe to stay with what’s unfolding.

As snowflakes drift past my window, I find myself watching them. Perhaps part of their beauty is their passing presence—a reminder that not everything is meant to last, and not everything needs to.

I’m beginning to understand what this season is teaching me: patience isn’t something I find at the end of waiting, but something I practice inside it.

• It’s letting hope be present, even when fear is still speaking.

• It’s trusting that something is still unfolding, even when I can’t see it yet.

As the snow continues to fall, I find myself watching it the way I’ve been living this season—still waiting, and slowly learning how to stay.

The Wise Old Oak

What if you looked at your life the way you might sketch it—noticing what’s there without needing to make sense of it? What might come into view?

The oak reminds us that there are many ways of seeing. Some reveal themselves slowly, and in that quiet unfolding, something deeper begins to take root.

That morning, Sorcha sat at her writing desk. Her notebook lay open, the page waiting as it always did, but the words would not come.

Her thoughts moved like scattered birds, lifting and settling without landing. The more she tried to follow them, the further they drifted. After a while, she closed her notebook and slipped it into her bag, not in frustration, but in quiet yielding.

She stepped outside and walked toward the forest, the ground soft beneath her feet, the air carrying the scent of damp earth. The path opened into a clearing, and there she saw it.

The king of the forest, the mighty oak.

Its trunk was wide and deeply marked, its bark holding the language of seasons layered over time. Its branches extended outward, not reaching, but holding space with steady generosity.

She sat beneath it, her back resting lightly against the trunk, her notebook open, her pencil waiting. Instead of words, her hand began to draw, following the curve of bark and branch. As her breath slowed, so did her pencil, and the longer she looked, the more the tree seemed to reveal.

Then she noticed the acorn, resting among rough bark and fallen leaves.

She slipped it into her pocket, her fingers resting there.

As Sorcha walked home, the forest seemed to move with her differently. Her steps slowed, each one landing more fully, as though she had begun to feel the ground rather than simply cross it.

The acorn shifted beneath her fingers, its weight becoming clearer—as if it held something long in the making, something that had been quietly gathering in all the unfinished places.

She realized these were the moments she wanted more of: the simple pleasure of just being, of moving slowly, unhurried, and noticing the beauty that so easily went unappreciated.

Midway along the path, a movement crossed before her, swift and light, coming to stillness at the edge of the clearing.

A hare.

It held itself in quiet readiness, body low, ears lifted, as though listening beyond what could be heard.

Sorcha stood without moving, the space between one breath and the next widening as the hare turned its head. Their eyes met briefly.

For so long, her instinct had been to keep moving. In that moment, she felt a quiet knowing: she could not carry everything at once—and perhaps never had been meant to.

That night, she placed the acorn beneath her pillow.

In her dream, the hare re-appeared and led her through the forest to the oak. As she stepped closer, her sense of self shifted, belonging to something larger, something rooted. When her hand met the bark, it no longer felt separate.

She was the tree.

The next day, Sorcha returned to the oak. When she touched the bark, the weight she carried rose into awareness.

Her pencil began to dance across the page.

Yet as she drew, the branches of the oak tree continued beyond the page, as though what she saw could not be contained, as though the forest now moved through it and through her.

She paused, looking back at yesterday’s sketch for comparison, then reached into her pocket for the acorn.

Closing her eyes, she let herself drift into a daydream.

The acorn rested in her palm, small and unassuming—and yet, within it, she could sense the full shape of the oak she sat beneath: the wide-reaching canopy, the roots winding deep in patterns like Dara knots.

For a moment, she held both at once—the smallness and the vastness.

Then the Wise Old Oak spoke.

“You are not separate from what you seek,” he said. “What you are becoming is already unfolding in its own time, just as the whole of the oak is held within the seed.”

When she opened her eyes, the stillness remained—not something she needed to hold, but something that held her.

In the days that followed, Sorcha returned often to the oak tree, learning and relearning how to rest within her life. The acorn remained in her pocket, a quiet presence that held more than she could name.

Then one morning, she knelt at the roots of the oak tree and pressed the acorn into the earth.

Beneath the soil, the acorn rested in darkness and time, not yet formed, yet already carrying all that it would become.

The Season of Wisdom

Oak, the seventh tree of the Celtic Tree Calendar rises in the weeks around Beltane, as the Hare Moon lingers overhead.

Across the world, oak (Quercus) takes many forms — some tall, others wide. Among the longest-lived of trees, their slow, enduring growth unfolds over centuries.

This season, you may find yourself drawn toward an oak without knowing why. It bears no showy blooms. Instead, its broad, deeply lobed leaves gather overhead, breaking the light into shifting patterns until you realize you are already standing within its canopy.

This is the wisdom the oak offers — deepening both what we learn and how we see.

Oak, the Tree of Knowledge

Put down strong roots. Bask in the sun. Don’t be afraid to branch out. Stand tall.

In Celtic mythology, the name of the oak is rooted in doire, meaning grove — a place of gathering and protection.

The Dara Knot is drawn from the oak itself, its design shaped by the tree’s interwoven roots — a vast, unseen network that anchors it over centuries. In Celtic tradition, the oak was revered for its strength and endurance, understood as something formed slowly and held over time.

In knotwork, the Dara’s unbroken lines, with no clear beginning or end, reflect this same continuity — a pattern of connection, resilience, and what endures. Its form echoes the roots: crossing, returning, and holding fast beneath the surface.

Like the knot, the paths we take in life are rarely direct. They circle, return, and deepen, following patterns that take shape below what can be seen.

In this way, the oak offers a quiet teaching: that strength lies not only in standing tall, but in what continues to grow unseen. It invites us to root deeply, remain present, and trust what is taking shape.

Oak’s Medicine

In Sorcha’s story, three archetypal energies move quietly beneath the surface: the Wise Oak as the Rooted One, the hare as the Shapeshifter, and Sorcha as the Seed-Keeper.

In the Ogham alphabet, Oak—Duir—means door. Its symbol, a vertical line crossed by strong horizontal strokes, resembles a doorway. Many stories speak of entering great oak trees as a way of journeying inward—not elsewhere, but deeper into yourself.

In Lewis Carroll’s novel Alice in Wonderland, the rabbit hole is a doorway to another realm within an oak tree (Hidalgo, 2012). In Sorcha’s journey, the hare or Shapeshifter moves between seen and unseen worlds, reminding us that growth follows its own winding path.

Beneath the oak’s canopy, Sorcha draws instead of writes. As she becomes aware of what she has been carrying, the heaviness begins to soften—until it can be seen and set down. The oak offers a quiet presence in moments of overwhelm and uncertainty.

As the Rooted One, the oak is long-lived, growing slowly over centuries. In that time, it holds what has come before—weather, seasons, change—carrying a kind of memory that deepens into wisdom. It grows from a single acorn into a vast sheltering tree.

Sorcha begins to sense this journey within herself through the acorn she carries, realizing that what feels small holds the shape of what it will become.

Reflective Questions

You, too, might begin to imagine yourself as a Seed-Keeper—holding your ideas and intentions like an acorn, trusting they will grow in their own time as you gently tend them.
