We often imagine evolution as a ladder with humans being the highest rung. But if you step back, the ladder is much more chaotic than all that. These aren’t rungs that we are climbing. These are branching threads, most of which never lead to us. Many ended. Multitudes more developed with very little visible change. Even more became exquisitely suited to lives we often label as “simpler.”

We often assume that evolution is working toward greater complexity. But populations change due to more than just one process. Mutations introduce new genetic variations. Some of those variations spread because they help organisms leave more descendants under certain conditions. Others spread or disappear through chance, or shift between populations as organisms migrate. Natural selection can produce better adaptation but that doesn’t mean that every evolutionary change is an improvement.

There does not appear to be a universal fixed summit that evolution is progressing toward. Instead, the slope is ever changing and often locally confined and dependent on current conditions and environment. Things don’t just flow in one direction. History determines which routes are attainable, but organisms can also alter the terrain beneath them.

Seeing a pattern in hindsight does not necessarily mean that a destination existed in advance. Evolution inherits both biological changes and environments that have been affected by earlier life. Feedback does not require an organism to anticipate its evolutionary consequences. However, if it does learn to anticipate changing conditions and alter its behavior accordingly, that too can affect evolutionary outcomes.

Gradients Prompt Movement Not Goals

Change usually begins with difference. One place is hotter than another. A substance is more concentrated here than there. When these conditions vary across space, we call that variation a gradient.

A temperature gradient can drive heat transfer. If you place a warm stone into cool water, energy transfers from the stone to the water. As their temperatures approach equilibrium, the gradient weakens. A gradient can give a physical process a direction without giving it a purpose.

A gradient can weaken as energy moves, but an ongoing supply of energy can sustain the differences. Sunlight continually supplies energy to Earth, helping sustain temperature differences and providing energy that plants capture and other organisms obtain through food. These flows make living processes possible. But they do not specify what life must become. The ongoing supply of sunlight supports organisms with very different ways of surviving, reproducing, and altering their surroundings.

Energy keeps moving through these relationships. Organisms change how some of it is captured, stored, and transferred.

But direction does not automatically imply destination.

Selection Remembers Yesterday’s Constraints

Evolution may not have foresight, but inheritance carries forward somewhat like memory. Selection can produce strikingly purposeful-looking adaptations without foresight. It works with the inherited history and available variation under conditions that are subject to change.

Inheritance allows the effects of past selection to continue. But yesterday’s advantage can become tomorrow’s burden. Charts can reveal evolution as a steady climb. In a laboratory, twelve populations of E.coli began from the same ancestor and evolved separately under the same experimental conditions. Over generations they became better competitors within those conditions.

If you plot that improvement, the line climbs. But the height of the line depends on what we measure. It tells us how successfully the bacteria evolved in this particular environment, not how far they traveled toward some final form of life.

And we still need to widen the frame.

The twelve lines do not tell the same story. One lineage eventually gained access to citrate, a resource that had always been available. But just because the citrate had always been in the medium, that didn’t make this ability inevitable. Earlier genetic changes made its emergence more likely. It wasn’t as if those changes had taken place in order to facilitate future use, they simply allowed the conditions for the behavior to evolve.

But once the citrate use did appear, it altered the development of other bacteria in that particular flask. One lineage’s metabolism became part of another organism’s surroundings.

The upward trajectory is there, but it leaves out the relationships that helped shape what came next.

Maybe we see the ladder when we attempt to measure progress along one path. The web appears when we remember that paths interact.

Gradients are rarely fixed backdrops. Life can alter many aspects of its environment. This produces paths that make certain resources more available to life. Life, in turn, becomes more dependent on those paths because they sustain them. But when those paths are used they become altered.

Think of water flowing through a channel. Its passing causes erosion and deposits that redirect the channel.

Evolution inherits both prior biological changes and environments modified by earlier life. But that’s not to say organisms build their own future. Environmental impacts can be accidental or even self-defeating. Feedback does not require an organism to anticipate its evolutionary consequences.

Sometimes the relationships between living things change what can evolve together.

In experiments with yeast, researchers repeatedly carried the fastest-settling portions of a population into fresh liquid. Under these conditions, forming a cluster provided an advantage. Some yeast evolved to remain attached after cell division, growing into branching formations called “snowflakes.” The clusters grew and broke apart, releasing smaller clusters that continued the cycle.

The shape and size of a cluster could affect whether its cells were carried into the next round. And the connections formed between cells became part of an inherited structure that natural selection could act upon. To some this can look like another rung on the ladder: single cells becoming multicellular. But this experiment did not reveal a destination waiting for the yeast. It revealed conditions under which staying together could spread, and how that change prompted possibilities for further evolution.

When the Current Reads the Flow

Evolution doesn’t have foresight, but it produces creatures that do.

Across populations and generations, as different traits are gained and lost, nervous systems change accordingly.

A squirrel can gather and store food before winter arrives. It can also recognize a predator, watch a fellow to learn where food gathers, or abandon a behavior that isn’t productive. In a limited way, intelligence allows the past to reach into the future.

Memory preserves what has happened. Perception identifies what is currently happening. Prediction lets an expected outcome influence what happens next. The future is not pulling us forward. We are simply able to construct a fallible image of the future from the traces available to us.

But that ability can matter for survival.

In a study involving gray mouse lemurs, tests were done on spatial memory, problem solving, inhibition, and causal understanding. Animals who displayed better overall cognitive performance were associated with longer survival. But they weren’t grouped neatly along a single scale of intelligence. Performing well with one task did not predict performance in others. Animals who were more exploratory survived longer, even as more careful animals appeared to gather more accurate information.

Intelligence also carries a cost.

When researchers bred guppies for larger brains they found that although the females performed better on numerical learning tasks, they had developed smaller guts and produced fewer offspring. Their movement upward along one metric concealed what had been traded elsewhere.

A nervous system has to earn the energy it consumes. Intelligence requires expensive tissue. It must be grown, fueled, protected, and given time to learn. Greater flexibility in behavior can be extremely valuable in unpredictable environments. But in stable conditions, a smaller nervous system that exists alongside reliable inheritable responses may be more efficient. Natural selection does not reward the ability to answer every conceivable question. It just rewards solutions that work within certain conditions.

And intelligence does not adhere to one single design.

Birds, mammals, cephalopods, and insects solve different problems with systems shaped by different histories. A crow does not contain an unfinished human intelligence and a bee does not occupy some earlier rung beneath it. Each organism extracts useful information from its surroundings in different ways.

What one individual learns can also become available to others. In humans, ways of understanding became increasingly shared, carried through cultural inheritance. Information moves through teaching, imitation, language, tools, and eventually writing. An individual does not have to rediscover everything. Every generation is able to move into a world that has already been changed by the knowledge of past generations. Those changes compile over time. Now intelligence has spread beyond the body into a network of other minds and material records.

And the network changes the very environment that produced it in the first place.

Agriculture has completely transformed landscapes and diets. Cities constantly reorganize around movement and disease. Institutions begin to create incentives that shape behavior. Technology opens possibilities while simultaneously generating new dependencies.

We have become capable enough to reorganize some of the gradients that carry us. We have even become powerful enough to redirect some. But each redirection changes the conditions we must respond to.

Maybe intelligence isn’t the summit of evolution many imagine it to be. Maybe it is simply one of the ways evolution became able to respond to itself. But that response is local, imperfect, and filtered through a web of organisms whose predictions continually alter the experience of another.

Sometimes I wonder if what looks like ascent is simply what a current feels like from the inside. We have become capable of seeing the current, naming it, measuring it, and even changing its course.

But we remain inside of it.

Our predictions compete with appetite, fear, status, habit, and the pressure of systems already in motion. Intelligence provided no central navigator, it simply filled the currents with creatures capable of steering locally, each altering the water encountered by others.

If there is no way out of the river…

If there is no summit waiting for us…

Wouldn’t it be best to focus on what we are making for whatever comes next?

Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning.

I’m not trying to be dramatic. The metaphor is apt.

Every month. Every week. Every day.

Every single year it feels like I sink just a little bit deeper.

But that can’t be. Because the waterline is always just below my nose. The seam of moisture dances against my nostrils in a way that keeps panic ever present.

Just along the edge.

I’m not being dramatic. I can barely breathe.

I’m not alone in feeling this way, either. That has become evident with each passing year too. There are so many others in these waters with me. These pulling waters that seem to hover over some void that always keeps us sinking without letting the water rise, giving us just enough air to survive.

It’s always been like this.

But that isn’t true.

There used to be systems in place, networks of community and support.

Affordable housing and education gave people options. One-income households gave some families greater capacity for unpaid caregiving. Unions, pensions, and livable wages gave people foundations for the future. And stronger local communities gave people support.

Over the years, trends indicate that all of these have dropped off significantly in our society. And now even the most basic governmental supports are being stripped bare.

The Community of Yesterday

We always recall ‘simpler’ times. I can remember riding my bike around the local neighborhood with my friends, eating muscadines fresh from the vine and sipping honeysuckle nectar while being watched by a network of adults who maintained their homes while their partners worked.

Of course, the past cannot be romanticized. There were aspects of that society that I was not aware of as a child. Those one-income families were often carried on the unpaid labor and limited freedoms of countless women. And the systems that were in place were never available to everyone. Entire communities were excluded from housing and economic opportunities.

Disabled people were often hidden away rather than supported.

The safety nets that shimmered over the waters of my youth, which seemed to sparkle instead of drown, often had gigantic holes.

Acknowledging those failures does not imply that we have built something stronger to replace them.

I can remember having my own children.

And suddenly, the neighborhood was filled with strangers who were too busy to watch the kids. Everyone was working. Houses sat empty even in the blazing heat of summer. Interstates packed with commuters spending all day at work. Daycares and schools filled with the children no one had any more time for.

Instead of stitching up the holes that we ignored for so long, we simply transferred the risk.

Caregiving was put onto the shoulders of individual families. Retirement was suddenly an individual investment problem. Education turned into an individual debt. Housing became an increasingly inaccessible commodity. And childcare became yet another bill families were somehow expected to absorb.

The erosion of societal support isn’t just a feeling… It’s measurable.

In 2024, nearly half of U.S. renters were considered burdened by housing-costs, spending more than 30 percent of their income on rent or mortgage payments. Childcare averaged more than $13,000 per year in 2025, consuming a substantial share of household income. Union membership has fallen from 20.1 percent of wage and salary workers in 1983 to 10 percent in 2025, weakening a huge source of collective bargaining power.

Retirement has shifted as well: traditional defined-benefit pensions have largely given way to defined-contribution plans such as 401(k)s. This transfers more responsibility, and more of the financial risk, onto individual workers. Across housing, childcare, labor, and retirement, the pattern is similar: costs and risks once shared more broadly are increasingly being absorbed by individual families.

We did gain freedoms that matter. But one of the costs was a society increasingly dependent on every available adult earning an income while most of the labor required to sustain actual human beings… the disabled, children, the elderly, and the sick… became relegated to families already scrambling along the margins.

And when a family is unable to make all of those pieces fit, we call it a personal problem.

I clung to my children at first. I homeschooled with a growing philosophy of child-led learning and concrete applications of knowledge. I managed to form a thin network of my own through digital communities.

But it didn’t feel the same as what I experienced as a child, even if that lens was rose-tinted.

What I managed to build felt exposed and almost clinical. Playdates and co-ops often felt like strangers meeting in a dentist’s office. Even the children felt the tension. Of course, this is just my own view. There may be some people who have felt that way too. And there may be others who have had completely different experiences with the modern community. I can only share what I know.

Then Covid happened and everything stretched even further.

My husband and I had realized having a one-income family in today’s economy was nearly impossible. But we also were becoming increasingly aware that our youngest child would need much more significant support than our other two children.

It suddenly became apparent that she would need constant supervision and support and that both of us working simply was not an option. Our daughter was non-speaking and could not tell us if she was hurt or scared or uncomfortable. We were not comfortable leaving her with strangers or minimally trained caregivers.

Eventually we did enroll her in the Exceptional Education program at the local public school, and later full time at an ABA therapy center. However, she displayed significant sleep issues, and we often had to keep her home to rest after staying up all night which meant we had to stay home with her.

I’d been working on my degree in Education, so I transferred my skills into the Early Childhood Education industry.

At least there were some safety nets. Food Stamps. SSI. Medicaid.

That’s what I thought when I was younger. Now that I was nearing middle age and it was becoming apparent that my daughter was profoundly autistic and would need intensive support for the rest of her life, I could see those nets stretched so thin the threads were beginning to snap… one-by-one.

I’m working tirelessly to try to build something on my own, without community… without a government that sustains the members of society that need it most.

But often, that task feels impossible.

Today’s Fear

Today we live in a world where parents exist in a near-constant state of fear. Every developmental delay or missed opportunity feels existential. They aren’t irrational. I’ve shared their fear as an educator and even more as the parent of an autistic child. But I have also seen how that fear can leak into the children themselves.

I understand this fear better than most because I live the reality of it. I know what it’s like to stay in a job that doesn’t respect you because they can provide the support or training I need to facilitate my daughter’s unique needs. I know what it’s like to reconfigure a life to provide a level of support I never could have imagined.

I know the loneliness of existing on the margins of understanding caregiving firsthand.

There are piles of broken furniture that have accumulated in my past which could fill a Backroom. It is often difficult to find people that I trust who are willing and able to take care of my daughter. The hidden costs of sensory needs are beyond my wildest dreams. And the effort of coordinating an entire family schedule around therapy and appointments sometimes leaves me stretched and drained.

I know the emptiness of depending on a society that says flowery words as it puts up red tape. The help offered comes under the guise of specialists. I’m offered a state-funded behavioral therapist to come to the house to watch my daughter so my husband can work. But the therapist can’t drive my daughter to therapy or pick her up. I’m expected to put my non-speaking child on a bus and trust a stranger with her all day, who is only required to obtain a basic certification and forty hours of training.

I know the terror of facing a future where I will be gone and she will still need support.

And the terrible realization that there is a strange contradiction within all of this.

I am supposed to prepare for her future.

I am supposed to save.

I’m supposed to earn more, advance my education, build up my career, buy life insurance, plan for retirement, and somehow manage to set aside enough of a financial buffer for a child with profound needs to remain safe long after I am gone.

But I also have to be very aware of how much money can sit in each account, whose name can appear on it, whose income counts, which assets count, which benefits interact with each other, and which attempt for financial security may cost her something that she needs.

The federal SSI resource limit for an individual is still $2,000. It has remained the same since 1989.

Two. Thousand. Dollars.

That isn’t enough to replace a transmission. It’s not enough to survive many medical emergencies. It certainly isn’t enough to construct a lifetime.

So, families like mine learn an entirely different financial language than most people.

Special-needs trusts. ABLE accounts. Waivers. Beneficiaries. Medicaid eligibility. Life-insurance structures. Estate planning.

We become amateur case workers, advocates, benefits specialists, and financial planners because the consequence of getting something wrong isn’t just about losing money.

It’s about jeopardizing the scaffolding holding up someone we love.

It’s a scary story. And for once… I don’t have a solution or happy ending.

I think that may be part of the problem.

We have become so primed to treat survival as an individual problem that we expect every frightened family to become their own inspiring conclusion.

But right now… I don’t know how to do that.

I know how to work hard. I know how to advocate. I know how to fill out applications, attend webinars, sit on waiting lists, call agencies, rearrange schedules, and stretch money. I know how to love my daughter powerfully enough that I will spend the rest of my life trying to build something beneath her that will hold.

But love is not infrastructure.

There are still threads around us.

My husband is constantly rearranging his life around the needs of our family. Her siblings are always relearning the unique rhythms of a sister who experiences the world differently than they do. The therapists and doctors that actually know her help to guide us again and again. Other parents in those once too-open-feeling digital spaces are showing others doors they never would have known otherwise.

None of what I have built or recognize absolves our society of its responsibility to create systems that work.

But they remind me that we still know how to hold each other.

The waterline is still right beneath my nose. I won’t pretend that it isn’t.

But when I look around, I don’t just see other people drowning.

I see other people reaching for each other.

And maybe that is the first thread of the net.

There is an ongoing nefarious image that I believe every human has imagined. A group of elite, powerful individuals controlling things from behind the scenes. Now, the members of this group change depending on your ideology. Religious zealots. Communist atheists. Wealthy elites. Mass media power structures. Celebrity cults. The list goes on and on.

The shadowed table where the strings are pulled, where algorithms are determined, where data is analyzed, and trends are maintained and directed… That is always the same. But the faces around the table are morphed by the very shadows they work within.

We imagine them actively hoarding wealth, ruining the planet, collapsing economies, destroying the working class. And we ask why? What is the point of it all?

To sit in a bunker with numbers on a screen that no longer have any meaning?

But I’ve begun to wonder if we’re asking the wrong questions. What if civilization is being driven by the rules of the system itself? A system we created that evolves alongside us. Yes, the shadows exist, but what is it within the system that incentivizes their existence? And how do we change that?

I understand why people believe there must be someone driving this thing.

When the outcomes scale to this size, the only explanation that feels like it makes any sense is intention.

Surely someone can see where this is headed.

Surely someone can stop it.

But the more I’ve learned about complex systems… the less convinced I am that anyone is steering.

Looking for Villains

Humans are narrative creatures. We love to tell stories. And these stories almost always have repeating archetypes: heroes, villains, masterminds. These stories feel satisfying. They give us nicely packaged themes and results.

But reality is rarely satisfying and never easy to outline. A recession doesn’t have one cause. Neither does climate change, housing, political polarization, or inequality. Thousands upon thousands of incentives interact.

Bad people do exist, and of course some are worse than others. It is easy to point our fingers at the symptoms of the system that lets villainy rise to scale in the first place. But I think that it would be far more helpful to look at the structures and incentives we have put in place that allow these realities to exist... to understand the mechanisms and behaviors that we have become shaped by.

Most people want a safe or fair system, but bad actors will always exist and competing rewards make safe choices risky for individuals. If a person refuses a harmful race to gain an edge, they often lose out against competitors. Almost everyone adopts the bad strategy just to survive and the cycle gets trapped in a negative loop. This is known as the Moloch Dilemma, which is a theory where individual rational choices force a group into a destructive “race to the bottom.”

The Architecture of Incentives

Consider this:

A CEO of a publicly traded company genuinely believes reducing production would benefit society as a whole for the next fifty years. When quarterly profits eventually fall, shareholders revolt, the board replaces the CEO, and their successor restores production.

The system, more often than not, filters out people who don’t optimize for its incentives.

The same logic applies to politicians. Someone who sacrifices short-term economic growth for long-term ecological stability may simply lose the next election.

In a sense, sometimes it is the “framework” itself that is selecting behavior.

Game theorists have a name for situations like this: Moloch.

We like to blame the systems and structures we can somewhat understand. The ones that we can see just a bit more clearly. Capitalism. Socialism. Corporate Billionaires. Governments. Religions.

But the roots are deeper. Those are just the fruits of the corruption that is woven into the very terrain of society.

The framework underneath is the real problem.

Think about emergence. It is one of nature’s more powerful creative forces. Consciousness emerges from neurons. Ecosystems emerge from the interactions between countless species. Language emerges from millions of conversations over hundreds of thousands of years.

A murmuration of starlings is mesmerizing. No bird directs the flock. Each follows only a few simple rules: stay near your neighbors, avoid collisions, match their direction. Out of these tiny rules emerges breathtaking complexity.

Beautiful patterns can emerge without a motive, but so can destructive ones. The issue is not emergence itself. The issue is when the rules of the system reward behaviors that scale into destructive patterns.

Take a housing boom for example.

A young couple believes that if they don’t buy now, prices will rise higher than they can afford. A bank sees that home values are climbing and continues lending. A developer sees that demand is strong and builds more homes. An investor buys another property, convinced that prices will continue rising.

None of them wants the bubble to burst.

In fact, many of them privately suspect the market cannot keep climbing forever. But leaving too early means missing profits while everyone else continues to benefit.

So, everyone stays in.

Then… collapse.

No single decision caused the housing crisis. But millions of individually rational decisions became irrational collectively.

Now, imagine a fishery packed with fish that must be maintained at a certain level to sustain itself. Each fisherman wants to catch as many fish as possible, while simultaneously recognizing that they cannot pass a certain limit. However, if one fisherman voluntarily catches fewer fish, someone else simply catches them instead.

Looked at from each fisherman’s perspective: “If I don’t catch them, someone else will.”

This is a perfectly rational viewpoint.

But when this view compounds collectively… the fishery collapses.

This is the Tragedy of the Commons.

Every civilization leaves footprints.

The first generations walk across fresh snow. Their way is carved in directions with the least resistance. The next generations follow those same paths, because the trail already exists. The snow compresses. Over time, it becomes a road, then stone, then pavement. Eventually entire cities are built around a direction that started as someone’s first step.

We call it tradition. We call it infrastructure. We call it economy. But underneath, it is still just a memory of old footprints.

Fossil fuel became our most reliable source for energy. We built coal plants, pipelines, highways, gas stations, automobile factories, mechanic schools, oil drilling and shipping, suburban development… Millions upon millions of jobs, bleeding into the slow erasure of our environment. No one piece of this makes fossil fuels difficult to replace… all of them together make it nearly impossible. Even people who want renewable energy often rely on the existing infrastructure every single day.

This is path dependence. This is our tendency to lock-in.

Path dependence is the reality that once institutions, markets, or technology develop along a certain trajectory, changing direction becomes increasingly expensive. Because of this, there is the tendency among humans to lock-in, even when systems prove to be exploitative. Once enormous infrastructures, economic networks, and political institutions depend on growth through exploitation, even leaders who recognize the danger cannot simply change course without triggering another kind of catastrophe.

We Built the Framework

The easiest mistake to make when discussing systems is to imagine they simply appeared or formed completely organically.

They don’t.

People build them.

Every institution, law, market… every constitution began as someone’s decision. History is full of deliberate efforts to shape society in favor of one group over another. Those shadowed tables do exist, in lecture halls, town halls, boardrooms, and more, just not organized at the level that people imagine. The shadows stretch across oceans and continents, through trade routes, economic agreements, and contracts. This framework is not a mistake or phenomena.

Slavery was not inevitable. Neither was redlining. Women did not fail to possess the right to vote for centuries by accident. Those were all conscious decisions, defended by ideologies and enforced through the institutions they created.

Power always leaves fingerprints.

But history doesn’t end with the architects.

Once these decisions become embedded into a framework, something begins to change.

Children inherit schools their parents didn’t design. Workers inherit markets they didn’t create. Politicians inherit incentives they didn’t vote for. Executives inherit expectations they didn’t establish.

Generation after generation, we continue to step into a game whose rules already existed.

The rule-makers eventually disappear.

The framework remains.

Unfortunately, a system doesn’t need to be consciously maintained by the original architects to continue producing similar outcomes.

People respond to incentives.

And eventually, the framework begins building us.

The Loop of Rationality

One executive cuts costs and their stock rises significantly. Competitors begin to imitate that strategy. Workers begin to lose their security due to lower wages and fewer benefits. Consumers begin seeking out even cheaper goods. Investors begin to reward efficiency above all else.

Companies are constantly competing with each other. Investors are always looking for the best returns. Consumers seek out affordability. Politicians chase elections.

Repeat this. Over and over. Take it to scale.

Suddenly everyone is trapped in a feedback loop. No one wanted the long-term consequences. On the surface, everyone acted rationally.

The loop reinforces itself.

Bad actors tighten the loop, squeezing the system against itself. I am not arguing there are not individuals and institutions that don’t cause more harm than others. That would be delusional. Still, they operate within the framework that makes their grip more sustainable.

Villains do exist. But entire civilizations do not collapse because villains exist. They collapse when ordinary incentives allow villainy to scale.

And the thing about people is they rarely visualize themselves as villains. I seriously doubt many people wake up thinking, “I will accelerate the collapse of civilization today.”

They tell themselves stories. People are so good at that.

The worst part is that because of the framework, some of these stories are at least partially true.

“If I don’t do it, someone else will.”

“The economic growth I’m helping to create will eventually benefit everyone.”

“Technology will one day make these problems obsolete.”

“I have responsibilities to my employees and investors.”

Narratives like this allow people to make choices that, when added together, may even contribute to outcomes they themselves do not want.

Money is no longer a concrete commodity. It has become increasingly abstract in modern society. Today money is fundamentally a claim on a functioning society. Wealth itself would lose much of its value if economies collapsed due to ecological breakdown and widespread instability.

If the systems that produce food, infrastructure, labor, knowledge, security, and trade collapse then financial wealth will mean almost nothing. Even private bunkers depend on functioning supply chains, skilled workers, and social stability. Billionaires sitting in bunkers will eventually crumble with the infrastructure they require to sustain themselves. Even moving to another country would not help when the collapse inevitably tumbles their way.

Nobody wants societal collapse. Most people are not actively working toward this outcome. Still, we seem to stumble toward it.

Why do intelligent systems keep producing outcomes that nobody actually wants?

We must shift our focus away from individual motives and toward the architecture of our incentives.

Civilization as an Organism

Sometimes it is easier to see patterns if you zoom out a bit.

Let’s zoom out a lot.

Look at civilization as an evolving organism. It isn’t just guided by a single mind, but countless interactions. Sometimes these interactions generate cooperation. Sometimes they spin us into runaway dynamics that no single participant can easily halt.

We have got to stop looking for villains.

Yes. Bad people most certainly exist. Everywhere and in every age. They always will. And they will always exploit any system available. If one of them is defeated, another will take their place.

This doesn’t absolve individuals of responsibility. A corrupt system does not force anyone to be corrupt. It simply rewards corruption more consistently than it rewards integrity.

The framework does not eliminate moral choice, but it does change the price of making it.

We must zoom out.

The challenge is less about defeating an enemy than it is about redesigning the rules that govern the feedback loops.

That is an incredibly difficult task because these rules are embedded in our institutions, markets, technologies… it is woven into our very psychology.

Even compassionate people eventually adapt to corrupt systems. Not because they have changed, but because survival required it.

Can We Redesign?

So, what is the actual point?

What is the endgame?

The answer is, more than likely, equally simple and horrifying.

There is none.

No one wakes up hoping for collapse.

But some do see it coming; they realize their part within a system that has optimized for itself for far too long.

Over and over again throughout nature, evolution has reached moments where competition can no longer solve the problems that it created. Transitions were required… thresholds were crossed.

Cells became organisms.

Organisms became societies.

Each transition expanded the boundary of “self.”

The next transition is never guaranteed.

Every major transition depended on cooperation becoming stable at progressively larger scales.

Our civilization has become increasingly competitive and intelligent.

Perhaps the framework cannot be stopped.

But it can be interrupted… it can be rewritten.

A cost can be returned to the institution that created it. A monopoly can be broken up. A worker can be given more leverage. A community can be allowed into the room where decisions are made. The measures for success can be altered. A rule can be forced to confront the damage that it concealed.

None of these changes will dismantle the system alone.

But they alter what the system rewards.

And over time, what a system rewards is what it produces.

Maybe the next transition is not technological at all.

Maybe the next transition is whether our institutions can finally learn to serve the whole instead of optimizing for their own parts.

Every framework writes the future that it rewards.

The question is whether we can still learn to rewrite the framework before it finishes writing us.

Substack recently partnered with the AI Detection company, Pangram to offer an AI scanning feature to the platform’s readers. Most content over one hundred words can be scanned by anyone who can access it to determine whether it is produced by a human or generative AI, unless the writer chooses to opt out. While no AI Detection system is perfect, Pangram does have a higher accuracy rating than most.

Now readers are scanning one another’s essays. Writers are scrambling to defend themselves. People are posting screenshots proving they are “human.”

But I have a question that has been festering deep inside the soul of a writer who still resorts to scribbled ink within spiraled paper…

When did writing become something we had to prove?

We used to write to express ideas. We wrote because we were trying to process ideas we were unfamiliar with. We write ideas together, weaving concepts and uncovering patterns that were never visible before. Now, it seems many of us write to prove ourselves to others.

Those scribbled lines are the roots through which my passion for this craft settled. From them, over the course of three decades, branches and leaves have grown that appear immensely different. They are the same craft, ever evolving. But still, the tree that grows is my own map of existence. My own attempt to understand a world we are all uncovering together.

Every Generation Draws a Line

We all tend to believe that the tools we learned to use are the most authentic.

The next generation’s tools always feel like shortcuts.

It has happened over and over again throughout history. With calculators, spellcheck, Google, Wikipedia, Photoshop, digital cameras… Each of these was viewed through the same lens of fear: that they would replace a skill. Instead, the skill itself evolved.

AI feels different, as it should, because AI deserves more scrutiny than spellcheck ever did. AI companies have trained their models on enormous amounts of human-created content, often without the explicit permission of the creators. The environmental impacts of this industry are becoming felt on a scale that is accelerating at a seemingly unhindered pace. Cognitive off-loading is being studied. Even AI-assisted suicide has become a horrific new reality in today’s world.

This isn’t the first time in history that technological advancement has had dire consequences. While the Industrial Revolution advanced mankind in ways that have modernized much of society, the environmental and societal impacts are felt to this day. This isn’t the first time elite organizations and individuals have sought to dominate society through advancing technology either.

When the printing press started turning out creativity to the masses, the sudden collaborative expansion of human perception was threaded through publishing companies, religious organizations, and institutions. The printing press expanded access to ideas, but it also created new gatekeepers. Publishers, religious institutions, governments, and later universities all influenced which ideas became amplified and which dwindled into obscurity.

The Myth of the Lone Genius

We like to romanticize authors.

Hemingway bent over his rum, standing with disciplined routine as he wrote with steady focus.

A scientist in the field scribbling in a notebook.

But Hemingway was often writing correspondence to his editors. Darwin collaborated in the field and through writing with colleagues across the world. Einstein debated peers after his lectures, sometimes in the middle of them. Every celebrated thinker has existed in a network.

Great works often do not arise from a single isolated mind.

Authors work with editors, researchers, proofreaders, publishers, fact-checkers, peer-reviewers, institutions… It takes time, money, and incredible support. Sometimes these resources could be found in the community. The modern community looks very different.

Individuals without these resources simply could not compete. The “independent writer” was never actually independent. They were always supported by an underlying network.

AI changes who has access to that network.

Intelligence Has Become Infrastructure

The fundamental services needed by society to function at a level that serves the community have evolved and expanded throughout history.

Water, electricity, the internet, search engines… each of these have eventually evolved into infrastructure.

But each of those infrastructures was built by first externalizing a human function.

Now aspects of cognition may be next, and that changes everything.

Not because humans are going to disappear, but because the baseline has changed. For all of human history we have used technology to offset labor. Now we are using it to facilitate cognitive tasks. That is a huge evolutionary leap.

Throughout our history we have externalized human skills and functions through technology. First we externalized our physical labor. The wheel carried for us. The plow dug for us. The steam engine multiplied our strength. The crane lifted what we could not. We externalized calculation with the abacus, mechanical calculators, and computers. We even externalized memory with writing, libraries, the internet, and search engines.

AI can now augment pattern recognition, language production, synthesis, organization, brainstorming, tutoring, translation, and creative iteration. These are not merely tasks. They are cognitive behaviors. They are functions that humans have long associated with thinking itself. That is genuinely new and disconcerting.

For much of history, gaining access to this level of cognitive support depended on institutions. Universities hired researchers. Publishers employed editors. Corporations hired analysts. Independent creators rarely had connections to those resources. AI does not completely erase those advantages, but it does lower the barrier to many forms of intellectual support. It narrows a gap that was once established by economics as much as ability. This does not completely level the field. Large organizations still maintain advantages. AI cannot replace domain experts, access to primary data, legal review, institutional memory, editorial diversity, and accountability structures.

Like every single technology that has emerged before it, AI reflects the incentives, priorities, and power structures of the civilization that created it. It should not be mistaken for a neutral intelligence descending from above, but as another expression of humanity’s long history of externalizing increasingly complex functions into shared systems.

It is an incredibly powerful tool.

Our tools have become increasingly capable of carrying functions that once belonged only to us. When we use this tool, we must be responsible as we ask ourselves what remains uniquely human… as we remember that any tool can be skewed into a weapon.

My fellow readers on Substack are not afraid of AI. But I think many of us are uncomfortable because we can no longer tell where one mind ends and another begins. For centuries writing was evidence of thinking. Now writing can be generated in seconds. The social contract has shifted, seemingly overnight. That discomfort is understandable.

Own Your Process

Every writer has their own process. Their own philosophical views, their own perspective on the craft. Some are disciplined while others are chaotic. Some are streamlined while others bend at will. Most find a beautiful line that dances between extremes.

I don’t know anyone else’s process. I only know my own. I’ve been writing for three decades. I’ve mentioned my process in past articles. My need to start with pen and paper, my struggle to map structure through storyboards and outlines even as my research spreads across books, journals, studies, and data. My current work in progress maps the evolution of existence from the atomic level up through the cosmic. Many of my essays deal with mapping patterns across systems, power structures, and evolutionary progress.

These are all passionate interests of mine. However, I am not a neuroscientist. I’m not a physicist. I’m not an economist, evolutionary scientist, or biologist. I’m a writer. More than anything else I seek to understand these things.

But I’m also a mother with three children, one of which has profound needs. I have a full-time job. I don’t have unlimited time, money, or resources. I don’t even have an adequate supply of the first two. I don’t spend every minute of every day writing, structuring, researching, and editing.

I am human.

So yes, I do use AI similarly to how writers have used researchers and editors for centuries. I check resources and continuity. I organize research spread across countless tabs, apps, search engines and libraries. I use it to critique my clarity and improve structure. I’m constantly checking sources, revising, redrafting, and shifting stance based on what the research uncovers.

I write because I want to understand the world, not because I want to define the process. Scientists disclose their funding and how they process data. Journalists disclose conflicts and editorial boards. Researchers describe methodology. I think writers should simply disclose their own process as well. Transparency builds trust in every field.

A Caution

The reason our technology is consistently catering to dominant systems and production is because that is what we have structured our society to incentivize. If we want that to change, we will need to alter our incentives.

That’s a whole other essay.

It sounds easy. It’s not.

There are also less significant consequences of AI that bleed into writing as a craft and particularly onto platforms that support it. People can publish works they don’t completely understand. Platforms can become saturated with low-effort content. Expertise can be imitated.

The solution is not to pretend AI doesn’t exist. It is to cultivate discernment.

Readers still need to have critical thinking.

Writers still need to have intellectual honesty.

If the history of technology is externalization, then maybe the question isn’t whether writers should use tools. We always have.

The true question is whether we can learn to recognize the difference between outsourcing function and outsourcing our judgement.

I still begin each writing session with ink on paper. Not because I believe that paper is more authentic than the keyboard, but because it reminds me that writing has never been about the tool in my hand. It has always been about the mind reaching through it.

The Real Question

One day, perhaps the detectors will become perfect at discerning human from machine. Maybe someday they will disappear. Either way, they will never answer the question that really matters.

Humans have always had the ability to memorize, to regurgitate facts, to paraphrase… to share ideas that already fit snuggly in their worldview.

AI is extraordinarily good at reproducing many of the cognitive behaviors humans perform. It was trained on us. It mirrors us with increasing skill each day. The question you ask while reading shouldn’t be: Was this written by AI?

The question should be, should always have been:

Did another human being truly wrestle with this idea?

When we hear the word dimension, most of us imagine space.

Length.

Width.

Height.

Perhaps time.

These have become so deeply embedded in our understanding of reality that it is easy to forget the word itself has a much broader meaning.

In mathematics, a dimension is simply an independent way of describing a system. It is another coordinate. Another axis. Another degree of freedom that helps explain how something behaves. Whether that system is a physical landscape, a financial market, a neural network, or a social graph is almost irrelevant. The mathematics remains remarkably consistent.

This shift in perspective opens an interesting possibility.

What if influence is not merely something people possess?

What if it is a dimension through which human systems evolve?

Not a physical direction we could point toward, but an invisible coordinate shaping the trajectories of ideas, relationships, institutions, and civilizations.

At first, this may sound more philosophical than scientific. Yet across mathematics, data science, sociology, and even theoretical physics, we already rely on dimensions that cannot be seen. They are not places we travel through, but variables that describe how a system changes.

Perhaps influence belongs in that same category.

Not as a mystical force or an undiscovered law of physics, but as a measurable axis along which human behavior bends, spreads, accelerates, and transforms.

To explore that possibility, we first need to rethink what a dimension actually is.

Dimensions Are Everywhere

Once we let go of the idea that dimensions must be physical, they begin to appear almost everywhere.

A meteorologist might describe a hurricane using coordinates like temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind speed. An economist tracks inflation, unemployment, and consumer confidence. A biologist measures gene expression, metabolic activity, and environmental conditions. None of these are directions in space, yet each represents an independent axis that helps describe a complex system.

Data science takes this idea even further.

In analytics, dimensions are the categories used to organize information. A retailer may analyze purchases by customer age, location, income, or buying habits. Each adds another layer to the model, allowing patterns to emerge that would otherwise remain hidden.

Machine learning expands the concept again. Large language models, recommendation algorithms, and image recognition systems operate within enormous latent vector spaces containing hundreds or even thousands of dimensions. These dimensions are not labeled with familiar words like “height” or “temperature.” Instead, they emerge from the relationships between data itself, allowing algorithms to map concepts by their similarity and predict how one idea relates to another.

In these spaces, ideas become coordinates.

The concept of forest naturally settles near trees, wildlife, and ecosystems. Gravity drifts toward mass, planets, and space-time. The mathematics is not concerned with what these concepts are. It is concerned with how they relate to one another.

The more dimensions we include, the richer the map becomes.

Seen through this lens, asking whether influence can be considered a dimension is no longer such a strange question. Mathematics has long since abandoned the notion that dimensions must be physical. They are simply ways of describing reality.

The more interesting question is not whether influence can be treated as a dimension.

It is whether doing so helps us better understand how human systems actually behave.

The Architecture of Influence

If influence is a dimension, then it should leave behind patterns.

And it does.

For decades, psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, and network theorists have approached influence from different directions. While each field uses its own language, they converge on a remarkably similar conclusion: influence is not random. It follows recognizable structures that can be studied, modeled, and, to some extent, predicted.

At the individual level, psychology explores how one person changes the thoughts or behavior of another. Robert Cialdini’s research on persuasion identified recurring principles such as reciprocity, authority, scarcity, social proof, consistency, liking, and unity… patterns that reliably shape human decision-making. Herbert Kelman expanded this framework by distinguishing between compliance, identification, and internalization, showing that not all influence reaches the same depth. Some changes disappear the moment external pressure is removed, while others become woven into a person’s identity.

Zoom out, and the picture becomes even more interesting.

Social Network Analysis treats people as nodes connected through relationships, allowing influence to be measured mathematically. Some individuals become influential because they are connected to other influential people. Others serve as bridges between otherwise isolated communities, allowing ideas to flow from one network into another. Paul Lazarsfeld’s Two-Step Flow Theory similarly suggested that information rarely travels directly from mass media to the public. Instead, it moves first through opinion leaders, who interpret, amplify, and reshape it before passing it along.

At the largest scale, influence becomes power.

Political scientist Joseph Nye described soft power as the ability of nations to shape the behavior of others through culture, values, and attraction rather than force. Sociologist Steven Lukes argued that power operates on multiple levels… not only through visible decisions, but by controlling which conversations are allowed to happen and, ultimately, by shaping what people believe they want in the first place.

Taken together, these frameworks reveal something important.

Influence is not confined to conversations between individuals. It scales.

The same underlying dynamics that persuade a friend can spread through a community, reshape an institution, redirect a nation, or ripple across an entire civilization.

The architecture changes in size.

The mathematics of connection remains surprisingly familiar.

Fields Instead of Forces

At first glance, physics and human behavior seem to have very little in common.

One studies particles, energy, and the structure of the universe. The other explores thoughts, relationships, and societies. They ask different questions and operate at vastly different scales.

Yet both are ultimately trying to answer the same fundamental problem:

How does one thing change another?

For much of history, physicists imagined forces as something objects exerted directly upon one another. Gravity pulled. Magnets attracted. Charges repelled. The mechanism remained mysterious.

Then came the concept of the field.

Rather than imagining objects reaching across empty space, physics began describing invisible fields that surround every massive object and every electric charge. An electron does not stretch out and touch another electron. It alters the electromagnetic field around it. Any particle entering that field experiences a change in motion, even though nothing visible connects them.

The field becomes a map of possibility.

It describes how another object is likely to move long before anything ever makes contact.

This offers a useful lens for thinking about influence.

Ideas, institutions, cultures, and individuals seem to create something remarkably similar. They shape the social landscape around them, altering the probabilities of how others think, behave, and respond. A trusted mentor changes the confidence of a student. A charismatic leader shifts the emotional state of a crowd. A cultural norm quietly guides millions of decisions without issuing a single command.

None of these examples suggest that human influence literally obeys the laws of electromagnetism.

But they reveal a striking mathematical parallel.

In both cases, the system is better understood not as isolated objects colliding, but as entities moving through landscapes that have already been shaped by the presence of something else.

Perhaps influence is less like a force we apply…

and more like a field we inhabit.

Curving Human Space

Albert Einstein transformed our understanding of gravity by proposing something profoundly counterintuitive.

Gravity is not a force.

It is geometry.

According to General Relativity, massive objects do not pull on one another across empty space. Instead, mass and energy curve the fabric of space-time itself. Planets, moons, and galaxies simply follow the natural paths available within that curved geometry.

As physicist John Archibald Wheeler famously summarized:

“Matter tells space how to curve. Space tells matter how to move.”

It is one of the most elegant ideas in modern physics because it reframes the problem entirely. Objects are not constantly being pulled toward one another. They are moving through a landscape whose shape has already been altered.

Viewed metaphorically, influence begins to look remarkably similar.

Powerful ideas, institutions, technologies, and cultures do not simply persuade people one conversation at a time. They reshape the landscape through which decisions are made. They alter what feels normal, what appears possible, what seems inevitable, and even what questions are worth asking.

A child born into one culture inherits a different social geometry than a child born into another. An algorithm changes which voices become visible. A school shapes the habits of curiosity. A religion provides a framework for meaning. A government establishes the boundaries of acceptable behavior. None of these forces us to choose a particular path.

But they make certain paths easier to follow than others.

Like gravity, influence often works not through coercion, but through curvature.

We tend to imagine ourselves making completely independent decisions, yet every choice unfolds within a landscape that has already been shaped by countless influences before we ever arrived. Some are personal. Some are cultural. Some are technological. Some stretch back centuries.

If influence can be understood as a dimension, perhaps its greatest power is not that it pushes us…

but that it quietly reshapes the space through which we move.

The Particles of Influence

If fields describe the landscape through which things move, quantum physics asks a different question:

How are those interactions actually transmitted?

Quantum Field Theory proposes that the fundamental forces of nature are not continuous pulls acting across empty space. Instead, interactions occur through the exchange of tiny particles known as gauge bosons. Photons mediate the electromagnetic force. Gluons bind quarks together through the strong nuclear force. Every interaction becomes an exchange.

The universe, at its smallest scales, is a conversation.

Again, this is not how human influence literally works.

But the mathematical analogy is difficult to ignore.

Human influence is rarely transmitted all at once. It spreads through countless small exchanges of information.

A conversation.

A book.

A news headline.

A social media post.

A teacher’s encouragement.

A parent’s criticism.

A vote.

A work of art.

A simple act of kindness.

Each interaction carries information capable of changing the state of the person who receives it. Most exchanges produce only subtle shifts. Others alter the trajectory of a life.

Influence, then, is not a singular event.

It is an accumulation of interactions.

This perspective also explains why large-scale change can feel so elusive. We often search for the one speech, the one law, or the one invention that transformed society. Yet civilizations rarely pivot because of a single moment. They evolve through billions of exchanges occurring simultaneously, each nudging the system ever so slightly in a new direction.

Ideas do not simply exist.

They propagate.

They are shared, interpreted, challenged, repeated, forgotten, rediscovered, and transformed as they move from one mind to another.

Whether we call them conversations, stories, symbols, images, or data, these exchanges function as the carriers of influence. They transmit beliefs, values, fears, and aspirations across the networks that connect us.

Just as particles continually exchange information through the fields that permeate the physical universe, human societies are immersed in an unending exchange of ideas.

The landscape shapes us.

But it is these countless interactions that continually reshape the landscape.

Hidden Dimensions

For most of human history, reality appeared deceptively simple.

The world seemed to consist of three dimensions, populated by solid objects moving through empty space. Anything beyond that belonged to philosophy or imagination.

Modern physics tells a different story.

In theories such as string theory, the mathematics only works if the universe contains additional dimensions beyond the three we experience every day. These dimensions are not vast, hidden directions waiting to be discovered with a telescope. They are thought to be compactified… curled into unimaginably small scales, woven into the very fabric of reality itself.

Whether string theory ultimately proves correct remains an open scientific question. But it illustrates something profound:

A dimension does not have to be visible to shape the universe.

Its influence can be real even if it cannot be directly observed.

That idea extends beyond physics.

Every person carries an internal landscape composed of memories, values, fears, experiences, biases, and aspirations. These invisible structures shape how new information is received. The same speech can inspire one audience, offend another, and leave a third completely unmoved.

We often describe this using a familiar word.

Resonance.

An idea resonates.

A story resonates.

A piece of music resonates.

The word is metaphorical, yet surprisingly appropriate. Just as a musical instrument responds most strongly to certain frequencies, people respond most strongly to ideas that align with the structures already present within them.

Influence is not simply about broadcasting information.

It is about the relationship between the message and the mind that receives it.

Perhaps this is why no idea spreads universally. Every individual occupies a different position within the hidden dimensions of human experience. Culture, education, personality, trauma, identity, and community all shape the geometry through which new ideas must travel.

If influence is a dimension, it is not one we can point toward with a compass.

It is woven into the invisible architecture of perception itself.

Like the hidden dimensions proposed by modern physics, it may not reveal itself directly.

Yet its effects appear everywhere we look.

Mapping the Invisible

If hidden dimensions sound abstract, consider this:

Modern artificial intelligence already depends on them.

When a recommendation algorithm suggests your next song, when a search engine predicts what you’re looking for, or when a large language model generates a response, none of these systems are reasoning within three-dimensional space. Instead, they operate within enormous latent vector spaces… mathematical landscapes containing hundreds or even thousands of dimensions.

These dimensions are not assigned by human programmers. They emerge from the relationships within the data itself.

Rather than following explicit rules, the model learns patterns. It discovers which ideas tend to appear together, which concepts predict one another, and how seemingly unrelated pieces of information become connected across millions… or even billions… of examples.

What emerges is not a dictionary or a database, but a mathematical landscape of relationships.

This is what allows an AI system to recognize analogies, identify context, recommend similar content, or generate coherent language. It is not searching for exact matches. It is navigating an invisible geometry built from patterns of association.

This is more than a technological curiosity.

It demonstrates that mathematics can successfully map realities we cannot directly observe.

No one has ever seen a latent vector space.

Yet every day, these invisible geometries determine which videos appear in our feeds, which products are recommended, which articles rise to the top of our searches, and increasingly, which information captures our attention.

The same mathematics can also be used to study influence.

Researchers model social networks as interconnected nodes linked by flows of information. They trace how ideas spread, where they encounter resistance, which individuals serve as bridges between communities, and how beliefs evolve over time. What appears to us as millions of independent decisions often reveals underlying patterns when viewed through the geometry of a network.

Perhaps this is one of the most remarkable developments of the digital age.

For centuries, influence was treated as something intangible… an invisible force discussed by philosophers and historians.

Today, it can be modeled.

Measured.

Visualized.

Not perfectly, and never completely, but well enough that algorithms increasingly shape the very landscapes they are mapping.

In attempting to understand influence, we have begun to build machines that participate in it.

The Geometry of Becoming

If influence can be understood as a dimension, then perhaps our lives are not simply collections of isolated choices.

They are trajectories.

Each of us moves through a landscape shaped by family, culture, education, technology, relationships, institutions, and history. We inherit a geometry we did not create. Yet with every conversation, every decision, every story we tell, we leave subtle distortions behind for those who follow.

In this sense, influence is both inherited and created.

We are shaped by the fields around us even as we become part of those fields ourselves.

This is true of individuals, but it is equally true of civilizations.

A scientific discovery alters the trajectory of future research. A work of art reshapes how a generation understands beauty. A philosophical idea changes how societies define justice. A teacher inspires a student who later transforms an industry. The effects are rarely linear, and they are almost never predictable. They ripple outward through networks of relationships, intersecting with countless other influences along the way.

Perhaps this is why history often appears so chaotic from the inside and so coherent in retrospect. We search for singular causes… a great leader, a pivotal invention, a defining battle… but reality is rarely driven by one event alone. It is the cumulative geometry of billions of interactions, each bending the landscape by an almost imperceptible amount.

This realization carries both humility and responsibility.

None of us stands outside the system.

Every conversation contributes to it.

Every lesson taught.

Every vote cast.

Every article shared.

Every algorithm trained.

Every child encouraged.

Every act of compassion.

Every act of cruelty.

Each becomes another coordinate in the evolving geometry of human existence.

We often ask whether we are changing the world.

Perhaps a better question is whether we are changing the shape of the world.

Because if influence is one of the dimensions through which humanity moves, then every interaction… no matter how small… becomes part of the landscape that future generations will one day inherit.

What We Leave Behind

For centuries, we have expanded our understanding of dimensions.

We moved beyond the three dimensions of everyday experience to mathematical spaces with hundreds… or even thousands… of independent coordinates. Modern physics asks whether hidden dimensions may underlie the fabric of the universe itself. Artificial intelligence already navigates invisible landscapes that no human can directly perceive.

Perhaps influence belongs within this broader way of thinking.

Not as a literal physical dimension, but as an independent axis through which human systems can be understood.

It is difficult to imagine a world without gravity because we have never lived outside of it.

Perhaps influence is much the same.

We do not step into it.

We have always been inside it.

The question has never been whether we are influenced.

Nor whether we influence others.

The question is whether we are paying attention to the invisible geometry we are creating together.

Every September, something extraordinary happens.

Millions of children walk through classroom doors carrying a world no generation before them has known. They arrive having spoken to artificial intelligence before they have learned cursive. They carry libraries in their pockets, friendships that stretch across continents, and questions no textbook has anticipated.

And waiting for them is a system built by people preparing children for a different future.

Not because educators lack imagination. Not because schools don’t care. But because education has always been a little like evolution itself... adapting to environments that are already beginning to change.

Every generation inherits a world shaped by the generation before it. We build schools to solve yesterday’s problems, teach yesterday’s skills, and prepare children for the future we imagine from the vantage point of the present. By the time those children become adults, the landscape has shifted again.

This isn’t a failure of education.

It’s one of its oldest patterns.

The classrooms we recognize today… the ringing bells, neatly divided subjects, age-based classrooms, rows of desks, standardized assessments… didn’t emerge because someone discovered the perfect way for children to learn. They emerged because they were remarkably effective at preparing children for the world that existed at the time.

The problem is that the world keeps changing.

And lately, it has begun changing faster than our institutions know how to follow.

For the first time in history, many of us are preparing children for jobs that don’t yet exist, technologies we can’t fully predict, and ethical questions that even the adults are still struggling to answer. We continue asking whether students can remember the right answers while carrying devices capable of recalling nearly every fact humanity has ever recorded.

Perhaps we’ve been asking the wrong question.

Maybe education has never been about preparing children for a particular future.

Maybe it has always been about preparing them to adapt when the future refuses to resemble our plans.

When the Factory Was the Future

Every educational system is an adaptation.

Just as a species evolves traits that help it survive in a changing environment, societies build institutions that prepare the next generation for the world they expect to inherit. Schools are no exception. They reflect the needs, values, fears, and ambitions of the age that creates them.

In the nineteenth century, the environment changed almost overnight.

The Industrial Revolution transformed quiet agricultural communities into rapidly growing cities. Families that had once depended on seasonal rhythms now depended on factory whistles. Work became synchronized. Production became standardized. Nations suddenly needed millions of people who could read instructions, perform basic arithmetic, keep time, and work together within increasingly complex systems.

The classroom evolved to meet that demand.

Rows of desks made it possible for one teacher to instruct many students at once. Bells divided the day into predictable intervals, mirroring the rhythms of factories and railroads. Standardized lessons ensured that whether a child lived in Boston or Birmingham, Atlanta or Chicago, they would leave school with a common foundation of literacy and numeracy. Governments expanded compulsory education not simply because learning was valuable, but because an industrial society could not function without an educated workforce.

Looking back, it is tempting to dismiss this as little more than a “factory model” of education, reducing children to future workers. But that overlooks what these schools accomplished.

For millions of children, compulsory education represented something their parents had never received: the ability to read a newspaper, understand a contract, calculate a paycheck, or participate more fully in civic life. Literacy expanded. Scientific understanding accelerated. Opportunities that had once belonged only to the wealthy became available to ordinary families.

The system was not broken.

It was remarkably well adapted to the world it served.

But evolution has a peculiar habit. The very traits that allow a species to thrive in one environment can become liabilities when that environment changes.

The question has never been whether industrial education succeeded.

It unquestionably did.

The question is whether a system designed to prepare children for the factories of yesterday can fully prepare them for a world where the most valuable skills are increasingly human, increasingly creative, and increasingly impossible to standardize.

When Competition Became the Curriculum

The world did not stop changing when the assembly lines slowed.

It accelerated.

By the middle of the twentieth century, the question was no longer whether children could become reliable workers. The question was whether an entire nation could remain competitive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Then, in 1957, something crossed the sky.

When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, it wasn’t merely a scientific achievement. It was a psychological one. A small metal satellite became proof that another nation might be moving faster, thinking differently, and preparing its children more effectively than America was preparing its own.

Almost overnight, classrooms became a matter of national security.

Science, mathematics, and technology took center stage. Federal investment in education grew, driven by the belief that today’s classroom would determine tomorrow’s innovations. For many students, this shift opened doors that had never existed before. New opportunities emerged in engineering, research, medicine, and technology. The nation asked more of its schools because the future appeared to demand more of its children.

The decades that followed broadened education in other important ways. Civil rights legislation, Title IX, and expanding protections for students with disabilities reflected a growing recognition that education should belong to everyone, not only to those who fit a traditional mold. Schools became more inclusive, more accessible, and, in many ways, more representative of the society they hoped to serve.

But another story was unfolding beneath the surface.

In 1983, the federal report A Nation at Risk warned of a “rising tide of mediocrity,” arguing that America’s schools were falling behind. Whether every conclusion in the report ultimately held up to scrutiny remains debated by historians and education researchers. What is far less controversial is its impact.

The report changed the conversation.

Performance became measurable.

Achievement became numerical.

Success became something that could be compared, ranked, charted, and reported.

Over the following decades, standards grew more uniform. Standardized testing expanded. Schools were increasingly evaluated by scores, teachers by outcomes, and students by benchmarks designed to produce objective comparisons across classrooms, districts, and states.

None of this happened without reason.

Parents wanted accountability. Policymakers wanted evidence that public investments were working. Educators wanted every child, regardless of background, to receive a quality education. These were legitimate goals.

Yet every system eventually begins optimizing for the metrics used to judge it.

When test scores become the measure of success, classrooms naturally spend more time preparing students for tests. Subjects that resist easy measurement… curiosity, creativity, collaboration, resilience, practical problem-solving… become harder to justify, not because they matter less, but because they are more difficult to quantify.

As a teacher, I still see this tension every day.

Parents understandably ask whether their child is reading on grade level or ready for kindergarten. Those milestones matter. But I also wonder about the skills that rarely appear on report cards. Can they resolve a conflict without an adult stepping in? Can they tolerate frustration long enough to solve a difficult problem? Can they work with someone who thinks differently than they do? Can they prepare a simple meal, care for another person, or recover gracefully after making a mistake?

Those questions are harder to score.

They may also be the ones that matter long after the test has been forgotten.

The Ground Moved Again

For nearly two centuries, education has responded to change by asking the same question:

What knowledge will children need for the world they’re about to enter?

It is a sensible question.

But artificial intelligence has quietly transformed it into a different one.

What happens when knowledge is no longer scarce?

For most of human history, information was precious. It lived in libraries, universities, and in the minds of people who had spent decades acquiring it. Learning meant gathering knowledge piece by piece, carrying it with you because there was no guarantee you could retrieve it later.

The internet changed where knowledge lived.

Artificial intelligence is beginning to change what it means to use it.

For the first time, students don’t simply have access to information. They have access to systems capable of writing essays, solving equations, generating computer code, translating languages, composing music, and answering complex questions in seconds. The bottleneck is no longer finding information. It is deciding what to trust, how to evaluate it, and when to challenge it.

That changes education in ways far deeper than replacing a textbook with a laptop.

It changes the relationship between thinking and learning itself.

Like every transformative technology before it, AI offers extraordinary opportunities. It can personalize instruction, provide immediate feedback, remove barriers for students with disabilities, generate new creative possibilities, and make expertise available to people who might never have had access to it otherwise.

But every adaptation comes with trade-offs.

Evolution rarely gives without taking something in return.

When every difficult task has an instant answer, students may lose the productive struggle that builds understanding. When AI drafts the essay, summarizes the chapter, or solves the equation, it becomes tempting to outsource not just the work, but the thinking behind it. Psychologists sometimes describe this as cognitive off-loading- our tendency to hand mental work to external tools. We’ve always done it to some degree. We write notes instead of memorizing every phone number. We use calculators instead of performing long division in our heads. AI expands that instinct dramatically, reaching into tasks that once required reasoning, synthesis, and creativity.

At the same time, schools are navigating challenges they were never designed to face. Teachers are being asked to integrate technologies they often received little training to use. Institutions continue to develop policies while the technology evolves faster than the policies themselves. AI systems can reproduce bias hidden within their training data, generate convincing misinformation, or incorrectly flag original student work as plagiarism. And while some students have access to powerful tools and reliable internet, others do not, widening inequalities that education has spent decades trying to narrow.

Perhaps the greatest risk, though, isn’t technological.

It’s human.

If we begin believing that intelligence is simply producing the right answer as quickly as possible, we may slowly forget what intelligence has always been: asking better questions, wrestling with uncertainty, changing our minds when the evidence changes, and discovering connections that no algorithm was ever instructed to make.

The ground has moved again.

Not because schools have failed.

But because the environment they were built to serve has changed beneath their feet once more.

We Are Asking the Wrong Question

Whenever a new technology arrives, our first instinct is often to ask how we can keep it from changing us.

How do we stop students from using AI to write essays?

How do we prevent cheating?

How do we make sure they still memorize what previous generations memorized?

These aren’t unreasonable questions. Every educator wants students to think deeply, develop genuine understanding, and take ownership of their learning. But I can’t help wondering if they’re the educational equivalent of asking how to make horses run faster after the invention of the automobile.

The landscape has already changed.

Artificial intelligence is here. It will continue to improve. Today’s preschoolers will likely graduate into careers where collaborating with intelligent systems feels as ordinary as using the internet does today. They won’t simply compete against AI. They’ll work alongside it, question it, refine it, and, hopefully, know when to ignore it.

The real question isn’t whether students should use artificial intelligence.

It’s what they should still learn when artificial intelligence can do so much.

History suggests that every technological revolution reshapes the value of human skills rather than eliminating them. The calculator didn’t make mathematics obsolete; it made conceptual understanding more important than arithmetic speed. GPS didn’t eliminate the need for navigation; it shifted our focus from memorizing every road to understanding where we wanted to go. Search engines didn’t make knowledge irrelevant; they made evaluating sources and synthesizing information more valuable than simply recalling isolated facts.

Artificial intelligence is asking us to make that shift again.

If a machine can retrieve information in seconds, perhaps education should spend less time rewarding retrieval and more time cultivating judgment.

If an algorithm can generate an essay, perhaps writing becomes less about producing words and more about developing ideas worth expressing.

If AI can provide an answer instantly, perhaps the most valuable skill is learning to recognize when that answer is incomplete, misleading, or simply wrong.

For generations, education has often measured success by how efficiently students could arrive at the correct answer.

But the future may belong to those who know which questions are worth asking in the first place.

That is a profoundly human skill.

Curiosity cannot be automated.

Wisdom cannot be downloaded.

Integrity cannot be generated.

The children entering our classrooms today do not need an education that competes with artificial intelligence.

They need one that develops the parts of themselves artificial intelligence can never replace.

The Things Machines Can't Practice For Us

Evolution has never rewarded the fastest creature.

It has rewarded the creature that adapts.

For most of human history, adaptation meant remembering where food could be found, recognizing danger before it arrived, or learning from those who came before us. Today, many of those tasks have been outsourced to the devices we carry in our pockets. We no longer memorize phone numbers. We rarely unfold paper maps. Soon, many of us may rely on artificial intelligence to summarize meetings, draft emails, analyze data, and answer questions before we’ve fully formed them ourselves.

But some things cannot be outsourced.

Not because machines are incapable of imitating them, but because they emerge through experience rather than computation.

A child doesn’t develop judgment by being given the correct answer. Judgment grows through uncertainty... by making mistakes, questioning assumptions, recognizing patterns, and discovering why one solution succeeds while another quietly falls apart.

That is why I believe the future of education is less about resisting technology than about becoming intentional with it.

Students need more than technical AI skills. They need what many educators now call AI literacy- the ability to understand not only what these systems can do, but what they cannot. They should learn to recognize algorithmic bias, question confidently delivered misinformation, understand the ethical implications of using generative tools, and remember that technology should extend human thinking rather than replace it.

At the same time, we should be careful not to abandon the physical world that shaped our minds in the first place.

One of the most powerful educational frameworks I’ve encountered is the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach, often called CPA. Before children manipulate symbols, they manipulate objects. Before they solve equations, they build with blocks. Before they understand abstract relationships, they experience them with their hands.

That progression matters.

Long before human beings developed mathematics, our ancestors learned by touching, carrying, stacking, comparing, experimenting, and failing. Our brains evolved through interaction with the physical world before they ever evolved to manipulate symbols on a page. CPA reflects that deeper truth. It reminds us that understanding is built from experience upward, not downloaded from the top down.

Only after children have wrestled with an idea should technology enter the conversation.

Not as a replacement for thinking...

But as a partner in extending it.

And perhaps most importantly, schools must continue cultivating the abilities that have always made us profoundly human.

Critical thinking. Creativity. Collaboration.

Not because artificial intelligence possesses none of these qualities, but because it experiences none of them.

AI can generate possibilities.

It cannot wonder.

It can combine existing ideas.

It cannot care whether those ideas improve another person’s life.

It can simulate conversation.

It cannot build the trust that grows when people struggle together toward a shared goal.

These have never been soft skills.

They are survival skills.

The future will almost certainly belong to people who know how to work alongside intelligent machines. But it will belong even more to those who know how to question them, challenge them, imagine beyond them, and remain deeply connected to one another while doing so.

Those are not skills we practice after education.

They are the very reason education exists.

We Have Changed Before

It is tempting to believe that this moment is unprecedented.

In some ways, it is.

No previous generation has watched machines become capable of generating language, images, music, and ideas with such astonishing speed. No teacher before us has had to ask whether a student’s essay was written by the student, an algorithm, or some collaboration between the two.

And yet...

Education has stood at these crossroads before.

When factories transformed economies, schools transformed with them.

When the Space Race challenged a nation’s confidence, classrooms shifted toward science and mathematics.

When society recognized that girls, students with disabilities, and historically marginalized communities deserved equal educational opportunity, schools evolved again.

Each generation looked at a changing world and realized that the old answers were no longer sufficient.

This moment is different.

But it is not entirely new.

The danger has never been change itself.

The danger is assuming that because a system once worked, it must continue working forever.

Evolution offers no such guarantees.

Every successful adaptation eventually encounters an environment it was never designed to navigate. Species that survive are rarely the strongest or the smartest in any absolute sense. They are the ones capable of responding when the landscape changes beneath them.

Education is no different.

Our challenge isn’t to preserve classrooms exactly as we inherited them, nor is it to chase every new technology simply because it is new. It is to ask, with humility, what today’s children will genuinely need from us that yesterday’s children did not.

Perhaps that means spending less time debating whether AI belongs in schools and more time deciding what kind of human beings we hope our schools help cultivate.

Knowledge will always matter.

So will literacy, mathematics, science, and history.

But alongside them, we must nurture discernment in a world overflowing with information. Curiosity in a world eager to provide instant answers. Empathy in a world increasingly mediated by screens. Resilience in a world changing faster than any curriculum can keep pace with.

Those qualities have never been measured particularly well by standardized tests.

They are also the qualities that have carried our species through every great transition in our history.

The children entering our classrooms today are not behind.

They are simply arriving in a world unlike the one we inherited.

Our responsibility is not to prepare them for the past we remember.

It is to prepare them for a future none of us can yet fully imagine.

The Children We're Preparing

Every September, a new generation walks through classroom doors.

They arrive carrying possibilities no curriculum has fully anticipated. They will inherit technologies we haven’t imagined, careers that don’t yet exist, and challenges that have no chapter in today’s textbooks. Long after today’s policies have been rewritten and today’s debates have faded, they will still be shaping a world that belongs more to them than it ever will to us.

And still, we teach.

Not because we know exactly what that world will become.

But because we believe they can learn how to meet it.

Perhaps that has always been the true purpose of education.

Not to fill children with every answer they might someday need, but to cultivate the habits of mind that allow them to keep learning long after they leave the classroom. To help them think carefully, question confidently, collaborate generously, adapt courageously, and remain deeply human in a world that will continue changing around them.

The greatest gift we can give the next generation isn’t certainty.

It is the ability to navigate uncertainty without surrendering their curiosity.

Artificial intelligence will almost certainly become more capable. It will write more fluently, analyze more quickly, and solve increasingly complex problems. It will change industries, redefine professions, and continue reshaping what it means to work, create, and communicate.

But it cannot inherit the future.

Only our children can.

They will decide how these tools are used. They will determine whether technology deepens inequality or expands opportunity, isolates us further or brings us closer together, replaces our judgment or sharpens it. Those decisions won’t be made by algorithms. They will be made by people whose values, character, and capacity for critical thought are being formed today.

That is why this conversation matters.

Education has never simply been about preparing children for employment.

It has always been about preparing humanity for what comes next.

The children we’re preparing no longer exist.

By the time we’ve finished designing schools for one generation, another has already arrived with different questions, different tools, and a different future waiting beyond the horizon.

Maybe the goal was never to prepare children for the future.

Maybe it was to prepare them to shape it.

So I’ll leave you with this:

If we were building an education system today… not for the world we remember, but for the world our children are actually going to inherit… what would we teach first?

Before there were kingdoms...

Before there were borders...

Before there were laws carved into stone...

Before there were priests, temples, or sacred books...

There was a question.

Not the question we often imagine.

Not Who created the world?

Not Which god is the true god?

Those questions belong to civilizations already rich with language, tradition, and generations of inherited belief.

The first question may have been much quieter.

Much more intimate.

It may have been whispered over a body that would never answer again.

Where did you go?

We cannot know what the first story was.

No cave wall preserves it. No bone remembers it. No artifact carries the sound of the voice that first spoke it aloud.

But we can ask why stories became one of humanity’s greatest evolutionary tools.

Long before they explained the stars, stories explained one another.

They transformed fear into meaning.

Chaos into order.

Memory into identity.

A child learned which berries to avoid because someone told a story. A hunter remembered where the herds traveled because someone repeated a story. Families preserved the memory of those they loved because stories allowed the dead to remain part of the living world.

Stories became something remarkable.

They allowed knowledge to survive the individual.

Genes carry biological information from one generation to the next.

Stories carry cultural information.

One builds bodies.

The other builds civilizations.

Like genes, stories change. They adapt to new environments, borrow from neighboring cultures, compete for attention, and occasionally disappear altogether. Some survive for thousands of years. Others vanish within a single generation.

Perhaps that is why religion has proven so difficult to define.

It is tempting to reduce it to faith.

Or superstition.

Or control.

Or comfort.

History refuses to cooperate.

Religion has been a source of profound compassion and astonishing cruelty. It has inspired hospitals, universities, music, and works of breathtaking beauty. It has also justified conquest, persecution, and oppression. It has comforted grieving parents, united strangers into communities, and given countless people a language for hope. It has also been woven into systems of political authority and social control.

These are not contradictions.

They are reminders that religion, like humanity itself, did not evolve to serve a single purpose.

It grew.

Layer upon layer.

Generation upon generation.

Story upon story.

This essay is not an attempt to decide whether religion is true or false.

Nor is it an argument that it was simply invented to manipulate people.

Those questions, while important, are too small for what follows.

Instead, I want to ask a different question.

What happens when a species becomes capable of telling stories so powerful that millions of strangers begin organizing their lives around them?

Because once that happened...

Evolution itself changed.

Not biological evolution.

Cultural evolution.

For the first time in Earth’s history, ideas could spread faster than genes.

And among those ideas, none would shape our species more profoundly than the stories we chose to believe.

Love Before Heaven

If stories are among humanity’s oldest inventions, then we have to ask what first compelled us to create them.

Fear is the obvious answer.

A flash of lightning.

A failed hunt.

The roar of something hidden beyond the firelight.

Fear undoubtedly shaped our ancestors. Evolution rewarded those who survived long enough to tell the tale.

But I wonder if fear came second.

What if love spoke first?

Long before there were cities, our ancestors buried their dead.

Not always. Not everywhere. The archaeological record is scattered, incomplete, and frustratingly silent. Yet across thousands of years and countless miles, we find traces that suggest something more than simple disposal. Bodies carefully placed in the earth. Graves accompanied by tools, ornaments, pigments, or food. Individuals who had lived for years with severe injuries or disabilities that could only have been survived through the sustained care of others.

Archaeology cannot tell us what they believed.

It cannot tell us whether they imagined an afterlife, spirits, or gods.

It cannot tell us what words were whispered over those graves.

But it tells us something equally important.

They cared.

Profoundly.

Love leaves few fossils.

It doesn’t harden into stone or imprint itself on ancient bone. We rarely uncover evidence of a mother’s sleepless nights or a friend’s grief beside an empty place at the fire. Yet those invisible relationships echo through the choices people left behind.

Someone carried food to those who could no longer hunt.

Someone protected children who were not their own.

Someone refused to leave the dead where they had fallen.

Those are not merely acts of survival.

They are acts of connection.

And connection changes the questions we ask.

Perhaps the first question was never, Why does lightning strike?

Perhaps it was far quieter.

Where did she go?

Will I ever see him again?

Is this really the end?

Those are questions that science can now approach in one way, philosophy in another, and religion in countless others.

But for our ancestors, there were no disciplines. No boundaries separating biology from spirituality, psychology from cosmology. There was only experience... and the stories they crafted to make that experience bearable.

That does not mean the first stories were false.

Nor does it mean they were literally true.

It means they were attempts... honest, imperfect attempts... to build a bridge across one of the deepest chasms the human mind has ever encountered.

Death is not unique to our species.

Grief, however, seems to deepen wherever love deepens. As our ancestors formed stronger families, longer childhoods, richer friendships, and more complex communities, loss became more than the absence of another body.

It became the absence of a relationship.

Perhaps that is where the first stories truly began.

Not in humanity’s desire to control the world...

But in our refusal to let those we loved disappear without a trace.

From there, the story only grew.

The Mind That Couldn’t Stop Connecting

If love gave us the questions, evolution gave us the mind that couldn’t stop searching for answers.

Long before we understood atoms, bacteria, or galaxies, our ancestors had already evolved an extraordinary ability.

They could find patterns.

That ability was not an accident.

It was survival.

A rustle in the grass might be the wind...

...or it might be a predator.

A dark cloud might bring rain...

...or it might signal a storm powerful enough to destroy an entire season’s harvest.

Evolution rarely rewards perfect certainty. It rewards decisions that keep you alive.

For our ancestors, it was often safer to assume that something was there than to discover too late that it was.

Modern psychologists call this agency detection... our tendency to perceive intention behind events. It helps explain why we see faces in clouds, hear voices in random noise, or instinctively feel that something is watching us in the dark.

Most of us smile when this happens.

But thousands of years ago, this same cognitive tendency may have been one of humanity’s greatest evolutionary advantages.

The mind that imagined a hidden predator survived more often than the mind that ignored the possibility.

Like so many adaptations, it came with tradeoffs.

The same brain that learned to recognize meaningful patterns also began finding meaning where none objectively existed.

Lightning became anger.

Drought became punishment.

A successful hunt became favor.

Dreams became visitations.

The dead, who still laughed and spoke within our sleeping minds, became difficult to imagine as truly gone.

From our perspective, armed with neuroscience and atmospheric physics, it is tempting to dismiss these conclusions as superstition.

But that temptation overlooks something important.

Our ancestors were not irrational.

They were reasoning with the evidence they had.

Every human mind begins with incomplete information.

The difference between us and them is not that we stopped telling stories.

It is that our stories now compete with centuries of accumulated observation, experimentation, and revision.

Science itself is, in many ways, another kind of story.

Not because it is fictional...

But because it is humanity’s most disciplined method of building explanations.

Unlike myths, scientific stories are expected to change when new evidence appears. They are strengthened by being questioned, not weakened.

Yet both science and mythology emerge from the same place.

Curiosity.

Both begin with the same quiet question.

Why?

One answer becomes ritual.

Another becomes experiment.

Sometimes they overlap.

Sometimes they diverge.

But both reveal something fundamental about our species.

We cannot simply experience the world.

We need to understand it.

Perhaps that is the greatest evolutionary leap humanity ever made.

Not language.

Not tools.

But the ability to connect one idea to another... to imagine invisible relationships, infer hidden causes, and weave isolated experiences into coherent narratives.

That capacity transformed scattered observations into shared knowledge.

It allowed memory to outlive the individual.

It allowed stories to outlive the storyteller.

And eventually...

It allowed civilizations themselves to be built from ideas that existed nowhere in nature, yet everywhere in the human mind.

When Stories Learned to Survive

Every organism carries information.

An oak tree carries instructions for building another oak.

A wolf carries instincts refined over millions of years.

Within every living cell, DNA preserves countless generations of evolutionary experimentation, passing successful adaptations forward while allowing new variations to emerge.

Life survives because information survives.

Humanity eventually discovered another way.

Stories.

Unlike genes, stories are not inherited through birth. They are inherited through conversation.

A child who has never seen a wolf can still learn to fear one.

A community can remember a drought that happened generations before anyone living was born.

A grandmother can teach a recipe, a warning, a prayer, or a family history that survives long after her voice has fallen silent.

For the first time in Earth’s history, information could evolve without waiting for biology to catch up.

That changed everything.

A useful story spread.

A dangerous story disappeared.

A memorable story was repeated.

A compelling story traveled.

Like living organisms, stories began competing for survival.

Not consciously.

Not deliberately.

Simply because some were easier to remember, more emotionally resonant, or more useful than others.

The stories that survived were rarely the most accurate.

They were the ones people continued telling.

That distinction matters.

Natural selection does not preserve what is objectively true.

It preserves what successfully reproduces.

Cultural evolution is remarkably similar.

Some stories endure because they are profoundly true.

Others endure because they are emotionally satisfying.

Others because they unite communities.

Others because they justify existing social structures.

Others because they inspire hope in moments of despair.

Many survive because they do several of these things at once.

Over thousands of years, stories began doing something extraordinary.

They escaped the individual mind.

No single person owns the story of a people.

Languages belong to communities.

Songs evolve with every generation that sings them.

Myths change as they cross mountains and oceans, absorbing new landscapes, new neighbors, and new fears without losing the thread that made them recognizable in the first place.

Stories became living ecosystems.

Each generation inherited them...

Changed them...

Forgot parts...

Added others...

Until the original storyteller disappeared completely.

The story remained.

Perhaps this is one of humanity’s greatest evolutionary innovations.

Genes preserve bodies.

Stories preserve worlds.

One remembers how to build a human being.

The other remembers how to build a civilization.

This is also where we should be careful.

It is tempting to imagine that stories evolve toward truth, just as it is tempting to imagine they evolve toward deception.

History suggests neither is inevitable.

Stories evolve toward survival.

Sometimes truth helps them survive.

Sometimes beauty does.

Sometimes fear.

Sometimes love.

Sometimes power.

Usually, some combination of all of them.

Religion did not emerge outside this process.

Neither did philosophy.

Or science.

Or law.

Or democracy.

Or nationalism.

Every one of them is built from stories that proved resilient enough to survive the generations that first imagined them.

The question, then, is not whether stories evolve.

They always have.

The more interesting question is...

What makes one story survive while another disappears?

The Mother and The Hearth

Stories do not evolve in isolation.

Neither do societies.

As climates shifted, populations migrated, and communities grew larger, the stories people told were shaped not only by imagination, but by the environments they called home.

Long before cities rose from river valleys, most people lived in small bands of hunter-gatherers. Their worlds were intimate. Families overlapped. Resources were shared. Survival depended less on accumulating wealth than on maintaining relationships.

In such communities, ownership had different meanings.

You could not own the rain.

You could not fence a migrating herd.

The forest belonged to no one.

And perhaps most importantly...

Children belonged to everyone.

This is one of the places where modern assumptions can quietly distort the past.

When anthropologists describe many early societies as matrilineal, they are not describing worlds where women ruled over men in some prehistoric inversion of patriarchy.

Matrilineal simply means that kinship, inheritance, or family identity was traced through the mother’s line.

That distinction matters.

In a world before genetic testing… and long before written records… motherhood was certain.

Fatherhood was inferred.

The mother was not simply the person who gave birth.

She was the visible center of continuity.

Around her grew siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and children whose relationships could be known without question.

This did not eliminate conflict.

Nor did it eliminate male authority.

Many matrilineal societies still placed significant leadership in the hands of men, often maternal uncles or respected elders. Others shared authority more broadly. Human cultures have always been remarkably diverse.

The point is not that one system was better than another.

It is that different environments rewarded different ways of organizing society.

The archaeological record offers intriguing hints of these worlds.

Across Europe and parts of western Asia, archaeologists have uncovered thousands of small prehistoric figurines depicting exaggerated female forms. The most famous, the Venus of Willendorf, has often been interpreted as a fertility figure, though scholars continue to debate exactly what these objects represented.

Were they goddesses?

Ancestors?

Symbols of abundance?

Pregnancy?

Self-portraits?

Ritual objects?

The honest answer is...

We do not know.

That uncertainty is frustrating.

It is also beautiful.

Too often, we rush to fill silence with certainty.

Sometimes history asks us to become comfortable with not knowing.

What we can say is that fertility mattered.

Birth mattered.

The cycles of seasons, pregnancy, death, and renewal shaped every human community long before they were written into scripture.

The hearth became more than a fire.

It became a center of memory.

Children learned language there.

Meals became rituals.

Stories passed from one generation to the next.

The elderly, who could no longer run with the hunt, became living libraries.

Around the fire, knowledge stopped belonging to individuals.

It became inheritance.

This is easy to overlook because modern societies often imagine civilization beginning with monuments and kings.

But civilization begins much earlier.

It begins the moment one generation intentionally prepares the next.

Around countless fires, mothers and fathers, grandparents and neighbors taught children not only how to survive...

...but who they were.

And perhaps that is why so many of humanity’s oldest stories begin not with kingdoms...

But with families.

The hearth was humanity’s first classroom.

Its first library.

Its first temple.

Not because it belonged to women alone.

But because it belonged to relationships.

Yet relationships, like stories, evolve.

As populations settled...

As fields replaced forests...

As grain could be stored and land could be claimed...

The stories surrounding family, inheritance, and belonging would begin to change.

And with them...

Human civilization itself.

The Field Changed Everything

For most of human history, wealth was difficult to accumulate.

A skilled hunter might earn respect.

A gifted healer might become indispensable.

A talented storyteller might preserve the memory of an entire people.

But possessions were limited by what could be carried. Food spoiled. Herds migrated. Families followed the rhythms of the landscape.

The world was always moving.

Then, gradually, humanity did something no other species had done before.

We stopped adapting entirely to the landscape, and began reshaping it.

Agriculture did not appear overnight, nor did it emerge in only one place. Across different continents, separated by thousands of years, people discovered that seeds could be planted, animals could be domesticated, and rivers could sustain permanent settlements.

The transformation was slow.

Its consequences were anything but.

For the first time, the future could be stored.

Grain accumulated in silos.

Livestock multiplied.

Homes became permanent.

Villages became towns.

Towns became cities.

The earth itself became something that could be claimed, defended, inherited, and eventually taxed.

The environment had changed.

So the stories changed with it.

For tens of thousands of years, one relationship had been undeniably certain.

Mother and child.

Long before DNA, surnames, or written records, maternity required no proof. It was visible. Immediate. Public.

Fatherhood was different.

It existed, of course, but biologically it was inferred rather than observed. In many early societies, this seems to have mattered surprisingly little. Kinship was often organized through mothers, not necessarily because women ruled over men, but because maternal descent offered the most reliable thread through which families could understand themselves.

This is one of history’s most fascinating transitions.

Across much of the world… but not all of it… societies gradually began organizing themselves differently.

Inheritance increasingly flowed through fathers.

Family names flowed through fathers.

Political authority flowed through fathers.

Eventually, many religious traditions centered fathers as well.

Why?

The honest answer is...

We don’t know.

Not completely.

History rarely offers single causes.

As land accumulated value, inheritance became more consequential.

As villages grew into cities, leadership became more centralized.

As stored food became worth defending, warfare changed.

As populations expanded, administration became more complex.

Each of these developments created new pressures on society.

None of them required patriarchy.

But together, they may have made certain social arrangements easier to sustain than others.

It is tempting to imagine a single turning point.

A king.

A law.

A conspiracy.

A moment when men simply decided to rule.

History almost never unfolds that neatly.

Systems emerge because millions of ordinary decisions reinforce one another over generations.

Men certainly benefited from many patriarchal structures.

So did some women.

Others resisted them.

Others had no meaningful choice at all.

Culture is rarely imposed by one group alone.

It is reproduced by entire societies.

Parents teach children.

Children become parents.

Stories become customs.

Customs become institutions.

Institutions begin to feel inevitable.

Perhaps that is the greatest illusion history creates.

That because something endured...

...it had to happen.

But evolution teaches us something different.

It is full of paths never taken.

For every species alive today, countless others disappeared.

For every successful adaptation, there were alternatives.

Human cultures are no different.

Even as powerful patriarchal civilizations emerged across much of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, matrilineal societies continued to flourish elsewhere. Different environments produced different solutions. Different histories produced different stories.

There was never one inevitable civilization.

Only civilizations that survived long enough for us to remember them.

That distinction matters.

Because it reminds us that social systems are not laws of nature.

They are human creations.

Adaptive.

Powerful.

Fragile.

Always capable of changing again.

The field did not create patriarchy.

It created a new environment.

And like every environment before it, it rewarded some stories more than others.

God Become Governments

For most of human history, trust had a face.

You knew the people you hunted beside.

You knew the hands that prepared your food.

You knew who could be trusted because you had watched them grow from childhood.

Small communities rarely needed elaborate institutions.

Relationships were enough.

Civilization changed that.

As villages became cities, people found themselves surrounded by strangers. The baker no longer knew the farmer who grew the grain. The farmer no longer knew the family that would eventually eat the bread. Trade stretched across rivers and deserts. Goods passed through countless unfamiliar hands.

The old stories still mattered.

But they now carried a new burden.

How do you create trust between people who have never met?

How do you persuade thousands of strangers to cooperate without knowing one another personally?

How do you convince them that the laws of the city matter as much as the customs of their own family?

These were not merely political questions.

They were evolutionary ones.

Every civilization had to solve them.

Religion became one remarkably successful solution.

That sentence deserves careful attention.

Not the solution.

One solution.

Temples became more than places of worship.

They became storehouses.

Courthouses.

Schools.

Centers of administration.

Records of births, marriages, deaths, harvests, and taxes were often kept by the same institutions that preserved sacred traditions.

The priest was no longer simply an interpreter of dreams or seasons.

He became an accountant.

A judge.

An advisor.

Sometimes a king.

Sometimes all of them at once.

To modern eyes, this blending of sacred and political authority can seem strange.

To the ancient world, it often seemed natural.

If the gods governed the universe...

Why shouldn’t they also govern the city?

Across civilizations, remarkably similar patterns emerged.

Egypt’s pharaoh was not merely a ruler but a divine intermediary.

Mesopotamian kings claimed the favor of the gods who protected their cities.

In China, emperors ruled beneath the Mandate of Heaven, where political legitimacy depended upon maintaining cosmic order.

Elsewhere, rulers traced their authority to sacred ancestors, divine bloodlines, or heavenly approval.

These traditions differed enormously.

Yet they shared a common insight.

People are more willing to accept authority when it appears connected to something larger than any individual.

This is where religion and government became deeply intertwined.

Not because every ruler was cynical.

Not because every priest sought power.

Many almost certainly believed the stories they preserved.

Many genuinely devoted their lives to serving others.

Many communities found stability, charity, justice, and belonging within these institutions.

Yet sincerity and power are not opposites.

They often grow together.

A belief can be deeply genuine...

...and still become politically useful.

A ritual can create authentic community...

...while also reinforcing social hierarchy.

A sacred text can inspire compassion...

...and later be used to justify conquest.

History rarely asks us to choose between these possibilities.

More often, it asks us to hold them together.

Perhaps that is why religion proved so enduring.

It did not simply explain the world.

It organized it.

It transformed scattered families into communities.

Communities into cities.

Cities into civilizations.

It gave strangers a shared identity, a common calendar, a moral vocabulary, and a sense that they participated in something larger than themselves.

That achievement should not be dismissed lightly.

Without shared stories, large civilizations may never have emerged at all.

But every adaptation carries tradeoffs.

The same stories that unite people can divide them.

The same institutions that preserve wisdom can resist change.

The same sacred authority that inspires compassion can become nearly impossible to question.

When a story becomes sacred...

It no longer belongs only to those who tell it.

It begins shaping those who inherit it.

And perhaps that is the moment when stories crossed another evolutionary threshold.

They no longer simply explained civilization.

They began governing it.

Every Story Evolves

No story remains untouched.

Languages change.

Music changes.

Species change.

Why would stories be any different?

For generations, many of us have been taught to imagine religions as isolated events.

One people.

One revelation.

One beginning.

History tells a far more interesting story.

Civilizations rarely develop in isolation.

They trade.

They migrate.

They conquer.

They intermarry.

They translate.

And wherever people meet...

Stories meet too.

A merchant crossing the Fertile Crescent carried more than spices.

He carried ideas.

A soldier returning from war brought home more than scars.

He brought unfamiliar gods.

A refugee fleeing a collapsing kingdom carried memories that would become traditions in another land.

Stories traveled with people.

Sometimes they were adopted.

Sometimes rejected.

Sometimes transformed until their origins became almost impossible to recognize.

This should not surprise us.

Evolution almost never begins from scratch.

Bird wings are modified forelimbs.

The bones of the human ear were once part of an ancient reptilian jaw.

Nature does not constantly invent.

It repurposes.

Culture seems to behave much the same way.

Flood stories appear across many civilizations.

Sacred mountains rise in distant cultures.

Divine births.

Great sacrifices.

Golden ages.

Chosen peoples.

Heroes who descend into darkness before returning transformed.

Some similarities reflect direct cultural contact.

Others may emerge because human beings everywhere wrestle with the same questions.

Where did we come from?

Why do we suffer?

How should we live?

What happens when we die?

When enough minds confront the same mysteries, perhaps some stories become almost inevitable.

Not because they are copied.

Because they are discovered again and again.

This is where humility becomes essential.

It is tempting to draw straight lines between myths.

To say this god became that god.

This flood inspired that flood.

This religion borrowed from another.

Sometimes the evidence supports those connections.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

Often the truth is far more complicated.

Stories do not merely copy.

They adapt.

They absorb.

They resist.

They merge.

A tradition encountering a new culture rarely emerges unchanged.

Old symbols acquire new meanings.

Ancient rituals are reinterpreted.

Local traditions are woven into expanding worldviews.

Even sacred texts reflect this process.

They preserve older voices while responding to new political realities, new philosophical questions, and new historical experiences.

The result is not contradiction.

It is evolution.

Perhaps that is why debates about originality often miss the point.

No civilization invented storytelling.

No culture created morality.

No religion asked humanity’s first questions.

Every generation inherited stories older than itself.

Every generation added something new.

Every generation left something behind.

The stories that endure are not frozen in time.

They are living conversations between the past and the present.

That realization changes how we think about religion.

Not as a monument...

But as a river.

Always recognizable.

Never exactly the same.

Flowing through landscapes that reshape it even as it reshapes the world around it.

And perhaps the same is true of every story powerful enough to survive.

Not because it refuses to change...

But because it never stops changing.

We Never Stopped Believing

If religion teaches us anything...

It is not simply that human beings believe.

It is that human beings cannot build civilizations without shared stories.

Every society inherits narratives that exist nowhere in nature.

A nation is not a mountain.

A corporation is not a tree.

Money is not merely paper or metal.

Human rights cannot be excavated from the earth.

Justice has no molecular structure.

Yet few of us would call these things unreal.

They are real because we behave as though they are.

They exist between us.

Not inside any one mind...

But across millions of them.

That may be humanity’s greatest evolutionary innovation.

At some point, stories stopped merely describing reality.

They began creating it.

A border exists because enough people agree where it is.

A marriage exists because a community recognizes it.

A law exists because people collectively decide to enforce it.

Even language itself exists only because countless strangers continue speaking it.

None of these are illusions.

They are shared realities.

Stories made visible through human behavior.

Religion belongs to this remarkable family of ideas.

But it is not alone.

Nations ask us to sacrifice for people we will never meet.

Markets ask us to trust symbols that represent value rather than value itself.

Political ideologies promise competing visions of a better future.

Science asks us to place extraordinary trust in methods and institutions that no single individual could reproduce alone.

Even our identities are built from stories.

“I am a teacher.”

“I am a mother.”

“I am American.”

“I am Christian.”

“I am atheist.”

“I am liberal.”

“I am conservative.”

None of these identities emerge from biology alone.

They are narratives woven from memory, community, and experience.

Some we inherit.

Others we choose.

Many continue choosing us long after we stop noticing them.

This is where discussions about religion often become too narrow.

We ask whether ancient stories are true...

...while rarely asking which modern stories quietly organize our own lives.

Every era believes itself to be less mythological than the one before it.

Ancient people had gods.

We have markets.

They had sacred kings.

We have elected governments.

They had pilgrimages.

We have national holidays.

They gathered in temples.

We gather in stadiums, parliaments, classrooms, and digital communities.

The forms have changed.

The underlying human capacity has not.

This is not to say that all stories are equivalent.

They are not.

Scientific theories are tested differently than political ideologies.

Religious faith serves different purposes than constitutional law.

A family’s traditions are not the same as a nation’s founding myths.

Different stories ask different things of us.

Some invite questioning.

Others discourage it.

Some expand human flourishing.

Others narrow it.

Some evolve readily when confronted with new evidence.

Others resist change for centuries.

These differences matter enormously.

But they share a common ancestor.

Our extraordinary ability to imagine realities larger than ourselves...

...and then live as though they are true.

Perhaps that is what truly separates humanity from every other species.

Not simply intelligence.

Not language.

But our ability to cooperate through ideas that exist only because we continue telling them to one another.

We never stopped believing.

We simply found new stories.

The Story That Writes Us

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about stories is that they rarely announce themselves as stories.

We inherit them quietly.

As children, they are the lullabies we fall asleep to.

The holidays we celebrate.

The flags we salute.

The prayers we recite.

The histories we are taught.

The assumptions we never think to question.

Most become so familiar that they disappear into the background of everyday life.

Like language itself, we stop noticing them precisely because they have become part of how we understand the world.

That may be the greatest power stories possess.

Not that they can persuade us.

That they can become invisible.

Throughout this essay, I have followed one thread through human history.

Not to argue that religion is merely control.

Nor to claim that it is simply truth.

Both conclusions flatten something far too vast.

Religion emerged from the same human mind that painted caves, buried loved ones, watched the stars, cultivated fields, built cities, composed symphonies, and eventually split the atom.

It carries our compassion.

Our curiosity.

Our longing.

Our fear.

Our imagination.

Our capacity for cooperation.

And yes...

Our capacity for domination.

Like every great human invention, it reflects the species that created it.

Complex.

Contradictory.

Always evolving.

Perhaps that is the lesson history offers us again and again.

Stories do not merely survive because they are true.

Nor because they are false.

They survive because they continue meeting human needs.

Sometimes they help us navigate grief.

Sometimes they bind communities together.

Sometimes they preserve wisdom.

Sometimes they protect power.

More often than not...

They do several of these things at once.

The same story can liberate one generation...

...and imprison the next.

The same institution can inspire extraordinary compassion...

...while resisting necessary change.

The same belief can comfort a grieving parent...

...or justify a war.

Human beings have always been capable of holding these contradictions.

Perhaps we should become better at recognizing them.

Because we have not outgrown stories.

We live inside them still.

Some are thousands of years old.

Others were written this morning.

Some are whispered around dinner tables.

Others spread across the world in seconds.

Some ask us to become more curious.

Others ask us to become more certain.

Some encourage us to expand our circle of compassion.

Others ask us to draw sharper boundaries around who belongs.

Every generation inherits stories it did not choose.

Every generation changes them, whether intentionally or not.

And every generation passes something forward.

That is the inheritance we all leave behind.

Not just our genes.

Not just our children.

Our stories.

Perhaps that is why the question that matters most is no longer...

What do you believe?

Beliefs change.

They always have.

Perhaps the better question is...

What kind of story are your beliefs helping to write?

Does it leave the world more curious...

...or more certain?

More connected...

...or more divided?

More compassionate...

...or more fearful?

Does it allow new evidence to reshape it...

...or demand that reality conform to it?

Because evolution has never truly stopped.

It simply found a new medium.

Once, it unfolded primarily through genes.

Today, it unfolds through ideas as well.

Every conversation changes someone.

Every book leaves traces.

Every child inherits not only a genome...

...but a worldview.

Every generation becomes both the author...

...and the audience.

Perhaps that has always been humanity’s greatest responsibility.

Not merely to inherit stories.

But to become careful editors.

To preserve what deepens our understanding.

To question what narrows it.

To recognize that certainty and skepticism are both capable of becoming dogmas.

And to remember that every story… including this one… should remain open to revision as we continue learning about ourselves and the universe we inhabit.

After all...

The stories we tell may shape civilizations.

But the stories we choose to question...

May shape what civilization becomes next.

I have been watching The Boys recently.

Honestly, I struggle with it sometimes. The gore and obscenity can feel overwhelming. But beneath all of that is some of the sharpest commentary I have seen in years regarding politics, corporations, media systems, celebrity worship, and the architecture of modern society.

And one character in particular has fascinated me:

Soldier Boy.

What makes him interesting is not that he is secretly good.

He is not.

Soldier Boy is, in many ways, a near perfect embodiment of toxic masculinity. He is emotionally repressed, entitled, casually violent, psychologically damaged, and deeply rooted in old patriarchal structures of domination and humiliation.

And yet people are still drawn to him.

Women are attracted to him.
Men admire him.
Audiences become fascinated by him even while recognizing that much of what he represents should repel them.

Why?

I do not think the answer is as simple as “people are shallow” or “society glorifies bad men.”

I think the answer runs much deeper than that.

Attraction Is Not a Morality Detector

Soldier Boy represents traits human beings historically associated with survival, protection, and status:

• physical dominance

• confidence

• emotional certainty

• willingness toward violence

• charisma

• humor

• social power

For most of human history, these traits often did provide survival advantages in unstable environments.

Masculinity itself is not toxic.

But historically, many societies fused masculinity with domination, conquest, emotional suppression, and hierarchy because those traits could produce protection, order, and survival under certain conditions.

The problem is that traits adaptive for survival are not automatically healthy for intimacy, equality, emotional safety, or cooperation.

Human attraction is not a morality detector.

People are often attracted to:

• confidence over kindness

• certainty over nuance

• power over gentleness

• intensity over stability

Especially in fantasy spaces.

Fiction allows people to engage with archetypes without real-life consequences.

Culture has romanticized the “dangerous man with hidden pain” for centuries:

• Byronic heroes

• war heroes

• cowboys

• vampires

• attractive

• nostalgic

• “traditional”

• emotionally stunted

• abusive

• psychologically damaged

The audience is meant to feel the contradiction.

Patriarchy as an Evolutionary System

There is also an uncomfortable cultural layer beneath all of this.

Historically, women often had to align themselves with powerful men because survival, financial stability, safety, and social status depended on it. Attraction patterns became entangled with power structures over generations.

This does not mean women “want toxicity.”

It means human psychology evolved inside unequal systems for a very long time.

Over time, survival structures became cultural myths:

“real men”

“good women”

“alpha”

“provider”

“submission”

“strength”

Then religion, politics, economics, media, and now algorithms continuously remix and redistribute these narratives back into society.

People psychologically adapt to power structures:

• some internalize dominance

• some internalize submission

• some romanticize protectors

• some learn manipulation as survival

• some equate control with love

• some equate suffering with devotion

Patriarchal systems shape everyone, not just men.

The Internet Did Not Invent This

The modern digital expression of this evolutionary pattern is what we now call “red-pill culture.”

Not because the internet invented these impulses.

It didn’t.

The internet removed friction from them.

Online networks act as accelerants for:

• tribal reinforcement

• identity formation

• grievance amplification

• ideological sorting

• status competition

• algorithmic validation

Ancient impulses became globally networked and constantly reinforced.

Lonely and disillusioned people can now instantly find:

• communities validating resentment

• simplified explanations for suffering

• narratives assigning blame

• performative models of “strength”

• pseudo-evolutionary justifications for hierarchy

And algorithms optimize engagement, not wisdom.

Emotionally charged content spreads efficiently:

• outrage

• humiliation

• fear

• sexual anxiety

• dominance fantasies

• collapse narratives

Many of these spaces are especially persuasive because they are not built entirely on falsehoods.

They often begin with genuine observations about modern instability. Many men do feel socially adrift in a world where identity roles are rapidly shifting. Economic instability has altered dating dynamics, family structures, and long-term expectations surrounding work, partnership, and purpose.

Loneliness and alienation are increasing across society, not just among men, and many people feel psychologically untethered from older systems that once gave them identity and belonging.

But instead of routing these anxieties into adaptive models of cooperation, emotional resilience, and community, they are often funneled into rigid frameworks of dominance, hierarchy, and control.

Ancient Instincts at Planetary Scale

Many of the traits that once helped small tribes survive can become dangerous when amplified across technological civilization at planetary scale.

Aggression, territoriality, hierarchy enforcement, tribal loyalty, and suspicion of outsiders all had adaptive value within unstable environments where resources were scarce and survival depended on group cohesion.

But the same psychological machinery that once protected tribes can mutate into authoritarianism, misogyny, propaganda systems, identity radicalization, militarized nationalism, and dehumanization when fused with mass media, algorithmic amplification, and modern political systems.

Not because humans are uniquely evil, but because our systems consistently reward strategies that capture attention, resources, loyalty, and power.

One influencer can now affect millions. Emotional contagion spreads globally within hours. Entire identity ecosystems self-organize algorithmically, while financial incentives increasingly reward outrage, polarization, and certainty over nuance.

The technologies evolved faster than human emotional regulation did.

Soldier Boy and Homelander

This is where The Boys becomes especially interesting.

Soldier Boy and Homelander are not simply villains. They represent two evolutionary branches of the same underlying impulses.

Soldier Boy is the older archetype:

• hard stoicism

• emotional suppression

• violence as identity

• patriotism fused with masculinity

• domination framed as discipline

Homelander is the modern mutation:

• celebrity narcissism

• media addiction

• parasocial worship

• authoritarian spectacle

• fascistic branding

Homelander needs worship.
Soldier Boy expects obedience.

One is modern narcissistic spectacle.
The other is old-world patriarchal dominance.

And I think the show intentionally frames them as connected.

Soldier Boy symbolizes the old America that created the new America.

The Jensen Ackles Juxtaposition

But what fascinates me most is not actually Soldier Boy himself.

It is the juxtaposition between Soldier Boy and Jensen Ackles.

I want to be careful here because real people should not be reduced into philosophical symbols, and public personas are always incomplete lenses. This observation is based only on years of interviews, public interaction, and audience perception.

Still, Ackles appears to embody a version of masculinity many people seem deeply hungry for right now: competent without constant domination, confident without overt cruelty, emotionally restrained without appearing emotionally dead, protective without seeming authoritarian, and traditionally masculine while still collaborative and community-oriented.

That stands in stark contrast to Soldier Boy, who represents masculinity distorted through ego, repression, entitlement, humiliation, and violence.

Audiences subconsciously blend actor and character constantly, and I suspect part of why Soldier Boy lands so powerfully is because Ackles unintentionally sharpens that contrast.

He demonstrates that the archetype itself is not inherently toxic. What matters is whether those traits become integrated with empathy, humility, and emotional maturity… or corrupted into domination and control.

The Masculine Synthesis

Modern discourse often falsely frames masculinity as a binary:

Either:

• hyper-dominating “alpha” masculinity

Or:

• emotionally open but symbolically “de-masculinized” masculinity

But I do not think most people are actually searching for either extreme.

I think many people, both men and women, are searching for synthesis:

• strength without cruelty

• competence without arrogance

• restraint without repression

• confidence without domination

• protectiveness without ownership

This may explain why certain actors resonate so intensely right now:

• Jensen Ackles

• Pedro Pascal

• Keanu Reeves

• Oscar Isaac

They project capability and steadiness without predatory instability.

Soldier Boy fascinates audiences because he functions as a warning.

A warning about what happens when:

• strength loses empathy

• stoicism becomes repression

• confidence becomes entitlement

• protection becomes ownership

• charisma becomes manipulation

Can We Reconcile This?

Perhaps that is what makes the character feel so strangely relevant right now.

We are living through an era where ancient human instincts are colliding with technological amplification.

The old myths have not disappeared.
They have become algorithmic.

And humanity now finds itself trapped between old instincts and new technologies, still trying to determine what strength actually means in a networked age.

Not domination.

Not submission.

Not spectacle.

But integration.

And perhaps that is the real tension beneath all of this:

Can human beings evolve emotionally fast enough to reconcile strength with empathy before our systems continue amplifying the worst parts of us?

There are moments in history where systems change so completely that people continue living inside the aftershock for generations without fully realizing it.

The end of the Bretton Woods system was one of those moments.

Most people remember it as an economic policy shift. A technical monetary event. Something buried in textbooks beside charts and recession curves.

But culturally… psychologically… philosophically… it represented something much larger:

A transition from a world where value felt materially anchored to one where value became increasingly informational, networked, and abstract.

A civilization-scale shift from metal to belief.

Historical Systems

Resources in human societies are rarely distributed evenly.

They are accumulated, filtered, managed, and routed through systems of power.

Empires rise around grain storage, trade monopolies, shipping lanes, industrial infrastructure, military logistics, and eventually financial networks.

You can see the pattern repeating throughout history:

• Late Roman grain systems

• East India Company trade monopolies

• Railroad speculation during the Gilded Age

• Cold War military-industrial networks

• Modern derivatives markets

Each system becomes increasingly layered and interconnected.

And eventually, something strange begins to happen:

The machinery coordinating information, finance, politics, trade, and war becomes so large that it is difficult for anyone inside it to meaningfully audit the whole structure.

Accountability becomes procedural instead of real.

Natural systems often operate differently.

Forests distribute nutrients through fungal networks. Colonies coordinate through decentralized signaling. Ecosystems recycle waste into future growth.

Nature certainly contains hierarchy, competition, predation, and hoarding.

But it also contains astonishing levels of communal interdependence.

Human systems frequently drift toward concentration.

Natural systems often drift toward circulation.

That distinction matters.

Because eventually civilizations begin building economies that no longer merely organize resources…

They organize perception.

Bretton Woods and the Illusion of Stability

After World War II, the United States emerged as the dominant industrial power on Earth.

Europe and Japan were rebuilding.

American factories were massively productive.

The U.S. held enormous gold reserves.

Under the Bretton Woods system:

• Other major currencies were pegged to the U.S. dollar

• The dollar itself was pegged to gold at $35 per ounce

In theory, foreign governments could exchange dollars for physical gold.

This created trust.

The dollar was not merely paper.

It represented redeemable material scarcity.

A promise.

But reserve currency systems contain a built-in contradiction.

The world economy needs liquidity to grow. That means the reserve currency nation must continually supply more currency to the world.

But the more dollars the United States created, the harder it became to maintain confidence that every dollar could actually be redeemed for gold.

This became known as the Triffin dilemma.

The reserve currency country must supply the world with liquidity…

But supplying too much eventually undermines confidence in the currency itself.

By the 1960s, the pressure was building rapidly.

The United States was funding:

• The Vietnam War

• Great Society programs

• Expanding global influence

• Massive industrial and military commitments

Foreign governments began realizing there were far more dollars circulating globally than the United States had gold to back.

Gold started leaving American vaults.

The system was straining under its own success.

And so the Nixon administration faced a choice:

1. Severely contract spending and defend the gold peg

2. Massively devalue the dollar against gold

3. End convertibility entirely

In 1971, Richard Nixon chose option three.

The United States “temporarily” closed the gold window.

It never reopened.

The Moment Money Became Psychological

After Bretton Woods, the dollar became a fiat currency.

Its value no longer rested primarily on redemption into a physical commodity.

Instead, its value rested on confidence.

Confidence in:

• U.S. productivity

• State authority

• Military power

• Institutional stability

• Financial markets

• Global trade networks

• Collective belief itself

Critics argue this untethered money from reality.

Defenders argue it gave economies flexibility and prevented catastrophic deflation spirals.

Both perspectives contain truth.

But culturally, the transition changed something profound.

A gold-backed world feels materially constrained.

Wealth appears tied to something finite beneath the earth.

A fiat world feels informational.

Value becomes increasingly linked to perception, networks, leverage, confidence, and narrative.

The economy becomes less about stored metal…

And more about managing belief at planetary scale.

Oil and the Reinforcement of Dollar Power

The story did not end with Bretton Woods.

In many ways, it accelerated.

Throughout the 1970s, particularly after negotiations with Saudi Arabia and other OPEC nations, global oil markets increasingly standardized around U.S. dollars.

This created a powerful feedback loop:

1. The world needs oil

2. Oil is largely priced in dollars

3. Therefore the world needs dollars

4. Therefore nations hold dollar reserves

5. Therefore the United States gains enormous financial leverage

You cannot redeem dollars for barrels of crude oil.

But oil still became one of the major pillars reinforcing global dollar demand after gold convertibility ended.

And this matters because energy is not abstract.

Energy powers transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, logistics, heating, militaries, and digital infrastructure.

Once currency becomes deeply entangled with energy flows, military protection, global shipping systems, and speculative finance…

Money stops feeling like paper.

It begins to feel like the circulatory system of empire.

The Hyper-Networked World

After Bretton Woods, modern finance accelerated into something increasingly abstract:

• Floating exchange rates

• Debt expansion

• Financialization

• Derivatives markets

• Central-bank-managed economies

• Hyper-networked global capital systems

The architecture became enormously complex.

And complexity itself creates distance.

Distance between production and speculation.

Distance between governance and accountability.

Distance between ordinary people and the systems shaping their lives.

Today many people feel this intuitively even if they cannot articulate it economically.

The world often feels coordinated by invisible systems no individual fully understands.

Markets react to algorithms.

Currencies move on announcements.

Oil prices shift on geopolitical tension before wars even begin.

Information itself becomes an economic force.

Narrative becomes infrastructure.

And perhaps that is the deepest psychological shift of all.

In older systems, value appeared embedded in matter.

In modern systems, value increasingly emerges from collective agreement.

Not because matter disappeared…

But because human civilization became so interconnected that belief itself became operational infrastructure.

Money is no longer simply metal.

It is trust moving through networks.

Confidence scaled globally.

A story powerful enough to coordinate billions of strangers simultaneously.

And like all stories…

Its stability depends on whether people continue believing it.

I’ve tried to explain my creative process before, but every time I do, it slips out of neat language and into something messier. Not because it’s unclear, but because it isn’t linear.

It spirals.

What I’m doing doesn’t move step-by-step from idea to draft to finished product. It loops, folds, expands, contradicts itself, and then somehow… coheres.

And I’ve realized recently… that’s not just how I write.

That’s how I understand the world.

The Myth of the Clean Process

If you looked at my materials, you wouldn’t see a tidy workflow.

You’d see notebooks filled with fragments.
Research tabs open in clusters that don’t quite “match”.
Bullet boards mapping themes that are still shifting.
Notes scattered across apps, documents, margins, and memory.

It looks disorganized. It feels disorganized.

But it isn’t random.

It’s layered.

I research constantly… through books, journals, studies, conversations, lived experience. I use tools like Google Scholar and yes, even AI… but never without checking, cross-referencing, grounding. I don’t trust a single source. I build meaning through convergence.

And still, the information doesn’t land in one place.

It spreads.

Across sections of my book. Across parts of my life.

Atomic → biological → human → cosmic…
Work → parenting → music → story…

Everything bleeds into everything else.

Because that’s what it’s doing in reality too.

Writing as Integration

When I outline, I don’t just outline chapters.

I outline systems.

I map how ideas echo across the entire structure. How something introduced early transforms later, how a pattern repeats but evolves. I’m not just telling a story. I’m tracing a pattern of becoming.

And I always start by hand.

There’s something about handwriting that slows the mind just enough to let connections form. It forces intention. It resists the illusion of speed.

Then I type it up, editing as I go… not as a separate phase, but as a continuation of thought.

Even my editing process isn’t isolated.

Family reads pieces. Friends respond. Eventually, strangers will. Feedback doesn’t come at the end. It’s part of the ongoing formation.

The work is never sealed off.

It’s porous.

When the Process Becomes the Lens

Here’s where it shifts from process to philosophy.

At some point, I realized:

I don’t just use this method to write…

I use it to interpret existence.

Everything I experience feeds back into the system.

The way I teach.
The way I parent.
The music I listen to.
The patterns I notice in people, in systems, in stories.

It all accumulates.

And over time, it builds something larger than any single piece.

A framework.

A lens.

Not a fixed truth, but a constantly evolving synthesis.

The Fear of “Delusion”

I’ll be honest about something that sits underneath all of this.

There’s a part of me that wonders:

What if this is too much?
What if I’m seeing connections that aren’t really there?
What if I’m building something that feels meaningful… but isn’t?

These questions matter.

They keep me grounded.

Because there is a difference between pattern recognition and projection. Between synthesis and distortion.

So I check myself.

I return to sources.
I test ideas against reality.
I stay open to being wrong.

But I don’t shut it down entirely.

Because here’s the other side of that fear:

Every meaningful piece of art… every shift in perspective… every new framework…

Started with someone seeing connections others didn’t yet see.

Creation as Collective Continuation

We tend to talk about books like they’re isolated creations.

But they’re not.

They’re continuations.

Every book, song, film, idea… it’s all part of the same unfolding conversation. Each one adds a layer. A variation. A mutation.

That’s how culture evolves.

That’s how understanding evolves.

And that’s what I’m doing with my work.

Not creating something from nothing.

But participating in something ongoing.

Why I Keep Going

I don’t know if this book will land the way I imagine.

I don’t know if someone will read it and feel what I feel when I’m building it.

But I do know this:

The process itself is doing something real.

It’s shaping how I see.
How I connect.
How I move through the world.

And maybe… just maybe…

It will give someone else a starting point.

A thread to follow.

A pattern to recognize.

A Good Jumping Off Point

Part of me is writing this for my children.

Not to hand them answers, but to show them a way of engaging with questions.

A way of thinking that doesn’t demand certainty.

But builds understanding through curiosity, connection, and care.

Because if there’s one thing I’ve come to believe, it’s this:

We don’t arrive at truth fully formed.

We build it.

Together. Over time.

Layer by layer.

And this…

this messy, spiraling, ever-expanding process…

is mine.

Before the kids. Before the noise.

My brain is already running… scanning patterns, mapping out the day, remembering everyone’s needs. Appointments. School logistics. Therapy schedules. Work responsibilities. The quiet, constant calculation of what could go wrong… and how to prevent it.

Is this anxiety?

Or is this what it costs to keep a complicated life functioning?

The Invisible Cognitive Load

By the time most people are just starting their day, I have already run through dozens of mental simulations.

I am determining therapy schedules, managing school expectations, regulating emotions… not just my own, but for each of my children. I am anticipating meltdowns, planning financially, navigating systems that were never built to support families like mine.

Many neurodivergent people do this.

We run complex predictive models in our heads, constantly.

The world calls it anxiety. Overthinking. Control issues.

But sometimes it is simply pattern recognition in overdrive.

And it doesn’t stop at my immediate world.

The same pattern recognition that tracks therapy schedules and emotional thresholds… keeps going.

I find myself watching the society I live in with the same lens.

Recognizing familiar structures. Cycles that have been documented before: by historians, by economists, by people who have studied the rise and collapse of systems long before I was here to name what I’m seeing.

This isn’t about being special.

These patterns are not hidden.

They’ve been mapped. Repeated. Observed across time.

Concentrations of power. Resource imbalance. Social strain. Distraction layered over instability.

I am just… seeing them.

And once you see them, it becomes difficult to unsee them.

So the cognitive load expands.

It’s not just my family. My classroom. My immediate responsibilities.

It’s everything.

Patterns across systems. Across behavior. Across the way we organize ourselves and the way those structures begin to fracture under pressure.

And my mind doesn’t turn that off.

It keeps connecting.

Keeps mapping.

Keeps asking what it means.

I’m trying to do something with that.

To take what feels overwhelming, and turn it into something structured. Something meaningful.

A way of tracing these patterns across levels of existence. From the smallest systems to the largest ones.

Not as an answer, but as a way of understanding.

That’s what my current WIP is:

My attempt to make sense of the patterns that I see.

Because if I don’t give it somewhere to go…

it just keeps running.

A Day That Doesn’t Stop

My schedule is precise because it has to be.

Wake up at 4:30. Gym. Coffee. Cleaning. Wake the kids. Monitor school prep. Get my daughter ready for therapy. Get myself ready for work.

Work a full day.

Come home. Dinner. Therapy. Writing. Shower. Family check-in. Journaling.

Bed by 9:45… if everything goes right.

Even rest has structure.

Even rest is managed.

And still, my brain does not stop.

The Work That Holds It All Together

I also need to say this, because it is often misunderstood:

My job is not easy.

There’s a quiet assumption that working with young children… especially as a preschool teacher… is somehow lighter, softer, less demanding than other forms of work.

It isn’t.

It is physical. Constantly.

I am on my feet all day. Lifting, guiding, cleaning, moving, responding. Managing not just behavior, but emotional ecosystems in real time. Watching for safety, for conflict, for learning opportunities, for moments that matter.

It is cognitive.

I am observing development, tracking patterns, adjusting approaches, documenting growth, supporting regulation. Not just for one child, but for an entire group at once. Often mapping neurodivergent patterns in my students before they become visible to others.

It is emotional.

I am holding space for children who are learning how to exist in the world for the first time.

And then I go home… and do it again. At a deeper level.

This is not separate from society.

This is society.

This is where regulation begins. Where communication begins. Where cooperation begins.

We say we value children.

But we do not build systems that value the people raising and teaching them.

Neurodivergence in the Mirror

Looking at my own neurodivergence is… complicated.

I have been given multiple labels throughout my life.

The more I learn about autism, the more I recognize pieces of myself that were never named, only managed.

Masking.

Pattern obsession.

Sensory fatigue.

Burnout cycles.

Hyper-empathy mixed with overwhelm.

A deep focus on systems and meaning.

It is not the same experience my daughter has. Not even close.

But it is not nothing.

And it explains more than any single label ever has.

Parenting Neurodivergence

Then there is my daughter.

She requires a level of daily support that is difficult to describe.

I don’t want to frame her existence as a burden. It isn’t. She is the lens through which I understand the depth and expansion of love.

But the reality of supporting her is constant.

Safety concerns. She has no concept of fear or strangers, and a very high threshold for pain.

There are logistics:

• locked cabinets and rooms

• toileting and hygiene

• sensory needs and behaviors

• therapy and advocacy

• school systems or homeschooling decisions

• medical appointments

• financial pressure

• emotional labor

She always needs to be watched.

And the system treats autism like a problem to fix.

But the real challenge is this:

A world built with almost no room for neurological diversity.

Holding Two Realities

And then there is my son.

His experience is different. Less visible. But still significant.

ADHD is often treated as something smaller. More manageable. Something a child will “grow out of” or just needs to “focus harder” through.

But it comes with its own set of challenges.

Attention fragmentation. Emotional swings. Motivation that doesn’t follow conventional systems. A brain that doesn’t always align with the structures it’s placed inside.

Supporting him requires a different kind of translation.

Different strategies. Different patience. Different expectations.

And often, those needs are misunderstood or worse, minimized.

So I am constantly shifting.

Between different kinds of neurodivergence. Different supports. Different worlds.

Holding both.

The Labeling Machine

Mental health labels overlap more than we like to admit.

ADHD. Autism. Anxiety. Depression. Bipolar. Burnout. PTSD. Sensory processing disorders. And more.

Many share the same symptoms:

Exhaustion. Emotional dysregulation. Overwhelm. Shutdown. Isolation. Racing thoughts. Social fatigue. Panic.

Sometimes the difference between diagnoses is language, not reality.

Sometimes it feels less like we are discovering mental illnesses…

…and more like we are reorganizing the same human distress into different categories.

Labels can be helpful. I have needed them. They can open doors to support.

But that does not change the fact that a better system could exist.

The Industry

Mental health care is part of the healthcare economy.

That means:

• diagnosis codes

• insurance reimbursement

• medication pipelines

• therapy billing models

It begins to feel like a structure built to sustain itself on our struggle.

What if many of these conditions are not purely medical disorders…

…but predictable reactions to the way society is structured?

Constant productivity pressure.

Economic insecurity.

Digital overstimulation.

Lack of community support.

Caregiver isolation.

Work systems built for industrial efficiency rather than human well-being.

Of course there are genetic and neurological conditions.

But even those are often worsened by environments that were never designed to support them.

There is another layer to this that is harder to talk about.

The systems families like mine depend on… therapy access, educational support, social services… are often fragile. Constantly debated. Constantly at risk of being reduced or removed.

And yet, instead of addressing the structural issues that make these supports necessary, the conversation is often redirected.

Toward individuals. Toward personal responsibility. Toward cultural distractions.

It becomes easier to argue about symptoms than to examine the systems producing them.

Easier to tighten access than to ask why so many families need support in the first place.

I rely on these systems.

My daughter relies on them.

And I am acutely aware of how quickly they can be politicized, reshaped, or taken away, while larger concentrations of power and wealth remain largely unquestioned.

The Burnout Loop

By the end of the day, I am exhausted.

Not because I am weak…

but because I have been running cognitive triage all day.

I average nearly ten thousand steps a day. My cortisol is high. My body keeps the score.

There is often a quiet collapse once everyone else is okay.

Carefully held together with journaling. With meditation. With focus on healthy habits…

With sheer determination.

And I know how lucky I am to have been able to find the space in this chaotic world to create these habits. Many are not able to do so.

Because I am not doing this alone.

My husband is here, and his support matters more than I can fully put into words.

He has his own struggles. His own ways of navigating the world. But he has found ways to cope, to adapt, to show up.

We are so very lucky.

Because I know many families are doing this without that kind of support.

Single parents. Caregivers carrying this entire weight alone.

The invisible load becomes something else entirely when there is no one to share it with.

This is not about martyrdom.

It’s about visibility.

The Question We Avoid

Instead of asking:

“What is wrong with this person?”

Maybe we should ask:

“What conditions created this distress?”

And I don’t mean a simple, convenient answer that targets modern medicine or eating habits.

Mental health struggles have always existed. Neurological disorders have always existed.

We just called them something else, we kept them hidden… We abandoned them.

And now we have to ask ourselves why we continue to build systems that institutionalize, dismiss, isolate, or chemically alter people…

instead of creating communities that support them.

There are both genetic and environmental roots.

But we cannot address them inside systems driven primarily by economic models.

Closing Reflection

At night, the house is finally beginning to quiet.

I settle into bed.

My brain is still running.

Instead of shame… instead of self-blame… I search for a reframing.

Neurodivergence may not simply be a disorder.

It may also be a different way of perceiving systems, patterns, and relationships.

Maybe what we call illness sometimes begins when those minds are forced to live inside systems that were never built for them.

What kind of society could we build if we saw these minds not as problems to solve… but as perspectives to be unlocked?

Maybe the question isn’t why our minds struggle so much.

Maybe the question is why we built a world that makes so many minds struggle at all.

The Illusion of Strength

Many political and religious ideologies throughout history have pushed some form of domination or supremacy. Often this begins simply enough: one group finds itself closer to resources or power and begins proclaiming superiority over another. Over time those claims harden into systems.

Authoritarian regimes. Monarchies. Empires. Patriarchal hierarchies. Totalitarian states.

Different forms, but a similar logic: power should concentrate at the center.

Domination can be psychologically intoxicating. Research suggests that power activates the brain’s reward circuitry in ways that resemble addictive behaviors. Elevated dopamine, reduced inhibition, and increasing narcissism can follow. Once power becomes pleasurable, systems begin to form around maintaining it.

And yet history repeatedly shows a pattern.

Power concentrates.
Resources strain.
Institutions become rigid.
Elites grow insulated.
Social instability rises.

Then the structure collapses.

Civilizations across time have followed this arc.

The illusion of strength turns out to be brittle.

When Domination Actually Works

To understand why domination persists, we should acknowledge something important:

It does work… sometimes.

Domination is effective in specific situations:

• rapid decision making

• immediate threats

• crisis management

• short-term cohesion

A ship in a storm needs a captain. A military unit in battle cannot vote on every decision. Even in parenting, moments arise when immediate authority is necessary to keep a child safe.

Force can stabilize chaos in the short term.

But what works in emergencies often becomes embedded as the default structure of entire societies.

And that is where problems begin.

Nature’s Alternative Strategy

When we step outside human political systems and look at nature, something interesting emerges.

The natural world overwhelmingly favors cooperative networks for long-term survival.

Consider forests.

Beneath the soil lies a vast web of fungal networks known as mycorrhizae. These networks connect trees and plants across entire ecosystems, allowing them to exchange nutrients and chemical signals.

Older trees often send carbon to younger ones.

Plants struggling in shade can receive support from neighbors.

The forest does not function as a collection of isolated competitors. It behaves more like a distributed community sharing resources across a living network.

Biologist Suzanne Simard describes this beautifully:

“Plants are attuned to one another’s strengths and weaknesses… giving and taking to attain exquisite balance.”

Social insects show similar patterns.

Ant colonies and bee hives thrive not because of centralized authority, but because of distributed roles and collective intelligence. When one ant dies, the colony persists. Power is functional, not hoarded.

Even among mammals, the story is more nuanced than we once believed.

The famous “alpha wolf” hierarchy turns out to be largely misunderstood. Wild wolf packs function more like families, with cooperative leadership rather than tyrannical dominance.

Across ecosystems, the pattern repeats.

Short bursts of dominance may occur, but durable systems rely on cooperation.

Life builds networks.

The Recurring Collapse of Concentration

Human civilizations, however, tend to build something different.

Fortresses.

Structures where power gathers in a single center and flows outward through rigid hierarchies.

At first these systems can appear incredibly efficient. Central authority allows rapid coordination, resource extraction, and expansion.

But over time they grow increasingly fragile.

Complex bureaucracies multiply. Infrastructure becomes expensive to maintain. Elite classes begin extracting disproportionate wealth from the system while insulating themselves from its consequences.

Innovation slows. Flexibility disappears.

Eventually environmental stress, economic disruption, migration, or conflict exposes the brittleness of the structure.

Collapse follows.

Historians have documented this pattern across empires and centralized states for centuries.

The fortress becomes too heavy to sustain.

The Human Contradiction

The strangest part of this story is that humans are capable of recognizing the pattern.

We can study history.

We can model long-term outcomes.

We can observe ecological systems and learn from them.

Yet our institutions repeatedly reward:

• speed over stability

• efficiency over equity

• control over cooperation

Part of this is economic.

Competition produces immediate and measurable gains: market share, quarterly profit, individual success. Cooperation, by contrast, often produces long-term collective benefits that are harder to quantify.

Shared knowledge.
Trust.
Resilient communities.

These outcomes accumulate slowly and rarely appear on balance sheets.

As a result, systems designed around short-term metrics naturally favor domination.

Scale and the Fragility of Trust

Cooperation also faces another challenge: scale.

Anthropologist Robin Dunbar famously proposed that humans can maintain stable social relationships with roughly 150 people. Beyond that size, trust networks begin to weaken.

Large, complex societies introduce what might be called informational “noise.” Misinterpretations multiply. Incentives diverge. Trust erodes.

Without careful design, large systems drift toward hierarchy simply because it becomes easier to manage complexity through centralized control.

But that solution carries its own risks.

As institutions grow larger and more rigid, they become increasingly detached from the people they govern.

Technology as an Amplifier

Technology now complicates this story even further.

Digital tools can amplify both domination and cooperation at unprecedented scales.

On one hand, technology enables extraordinary collaboration. Open-source communities build software used around the world. Scientists share research instantly across continents. Online networks allow communities to coordinate efforts in ways never before possible.

On the other hand, the same tools can concentrate power.

Large technology corporations accumulate enormous influence over communication, commerce, and data. Surveillance systems expand. Algorithms shape information ecosystems in ways few people fully understand.

Technology itself is not the deciding factor.

The question is who controls it… and for what purpose.

Does it strengthen the network?

Or does it reinforce the fortress?

Forests and Fortresses

Human civilizations tend to build fortresses.

Thick boundaries.
Centralized authority.
Power concentrated at the core.

The living world builds something else entirely.

Forests.

Messy, decentralized systems of cooperation where countless organisms exchange resources and information through vast underground networks.

Forests are slower.

They are less orderly.

But they endure.

Every fortress humanity has ever constructed has eventually crumbled.

Forests still stand.

The Long Run

For most of human history, large-scale cooperation was limited by geography. Communities remained isolated, communication was slow, and building distributed systems across vast populations was nearly impossible.

That constraint no longer exists.

For the first time, humans have the technological capacity to collaborate across the entire planet.

We can share knowledge instantly. Organize communities globally. Build networks that transcend borders and institutions.

Whether we use that capability to strengthen cooperation… or to deepen domination… remains an open question.

If cooperation outlasts domination in forests, colonies, and ecosystems…

what makes us believe human societies are exempt?

And if we are not…

what would it take for us to start building forests instead of fortresses? 🌱

There is a spectrum of shadow between provable corruption and sensational horror.

Public discourse camps at the edges. Either everything is fine… or everything is secretly monstrous.

But the destabilization lives in the middle.

The very existence of the spectrum is already enough.

We do not need cinematic extremes to justify reform. We have documented failures of accountability that should disturb anyone paying attention.

Jeffrey Epstein was not a rumor.

In 2008, after being accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls, Epstein secured a federal non-prosecution agreement. Instead of facing serious federal charges, he pleaded to lesser state charges and served roughly 13 months in a county jail… much of it on work release.

The agreement was later ruled to have violated the Crime Victims’ Rights Act because the victims were not properly informed.

Let that sink in.

An incredibly wealthy and well-connected man accused of trafficking minors received a deal most ordinary defendants would never see.

That is not a conspiracy.

That is insulation.

And the insulation didn’t exist in a vacuum.

Epstein was deeply embedded in elite circles. His flight logs and contact books included former U.S. presidents, members of British royalty, hedge fund managers, tech billionaires, academics, celebrities and financiers. People from across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

This does not prove those individuals committed crimes.

But it does reveal proximity.

A dense web of access.

Imagine a small room where the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world regularly circulate. That room exists. It spans continents. It is quieter than the headlines, but it is real.

And when someone in that room falls, the floor beneath them is padded differently.

When Epstein was arrested again in 2019 on federal trafficking charges and later died in custody amid documented jail failures, the public felt something crack.

Not because we proved an omnipotent shadow government.

But because we saw how long insulation can last.

I am a mother.

So when I read about girls who were 14, 15, 16 years old and I see negotiations happening behind closed doors, I do not feel theoretical outrage.

I feel protective fear.

If wealth can cushion consequences for harm against children, then the architecture that provides that cushion deserves examination.

How the Cushion Is Built

Now widen the lens.

In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. FEC that corporations and outside groups can spend unlimited amounts of money on independent political messaging.

In plain terms: money gained even more voice in elections.

Since then, outside political spending has exploded into the billions.

Think of political campaigns as enormous machines that run on fuel. That fuel is money. When most of that fuel comes from a small number of very wealthy donors and organizations, those donors don’t have to issue threats to exert influence.

Access follows contribution.

If you help keep the lights on, your calls get answered.

This does not mean every politician is corrupt.

But it does mean the playing field is tilted.

Now add the two-party structure.

The United States uses a winner-take-all voting system. In systems like this, smaller parties rarely survive. Over time, political competition collapses into two dominant teams… a phenomenon often referred to as Duverger’s Law.

The rules don’t explicitly forbid other parties, but they build high thresholds: ballot access requirements, debate qualification rules, donor viability tests.

It’s like a building with multiple doors drawn on the blueprint, but only two that actually unlock.

So voters are often presented with two large umbrellas, each internally diverse, each funded by powerful donor ecosystems, each incentivized to keep the other as the primary enemy.

The cultural battles become loud.

The structural incentives remain stable.

Meanwhile, the same revolving doors spin: regulators move into industry, industry executives move into regulatory roles, lobbyists help draft legislation before the public ever sees it.

Again… not secret orchestration.

Just architecture.

But architecture determines flow.

If a building is designed with certain hallways and locked doors, you do not need villains hiding in the walls to explain why some people move more freely than others.

The Pattern Without the Panic

When you place these realities side-by-side:

• A globally connected trafficker who secured extraordinary leniency.
• A campaign finance system increasingly dependent on concentrated wealth.
• A two-party structure reinforced by electoral mechanics and donor ecosystems.
• A revolving door between industry and regulation.

You do not need to leap into cinematic horror to see distortion.

The pattern is visible.

Power clusters.
Access concentrates.
Wealth compounds.
Insulation emerges.

The system is not omnipotent.

Epstein was eventually arrested.
Journalists exposed corruption.
Courts revisited flawed agreements.

But the fact that exposure required extraordinary persistence does not erase the initial insulation. In fact, it points steadily to the obvious cracks in the system.

And that is what unsettles me.

Not the fantasy of a perfectly unified shadow government.

But the stark reality that structural incentives already tilt protection upward.

Destroy vs. Dismantle

When you realize the floor is tilted, the instinct is to burn the building down.

But history teaches us that fires spread beyond their intended targets.

Dismantling is different.

It means reinforcing the foundation instead of torching the house.

It means:

Reducing the role of concentrated money in elections.
Experimenting with ranked-choice voting so more than two voices can compete.
Strengthening antitrust enforcement so wealth cannot consolidate unchecked.
Closing revolving-door loopholes.
Protecting investigative journalism… the people who pry open locked rooms.

None of this is dramatic.

All of it is structural.

I refuse to hand my children a house with warped beams and pretend it will hold.

Collapse is not reform.

Reinforcement is.

The Cooperative Turn

I do not want chaos.

I do not want collapse.

I want my children to inherit a society where accountability does not depend on net worth.

I want power transparent enough that trust does not require naivety.

If concentrated power distorts systems, the antidote is not fragmentation into echo chambers.

It is coordinated civic pressure across ideology.

There are conservatives and liberals who both distrust corporate capture.
There are progressives and libertarians who both oppose entrenched duopolies.
There are parents, teachers, workers, and small business owners who all recognize that concentrated wealth should not equal concentrated immunity.

The species does not evolve through domination alone.

We evolve through cooperation.

Not sentimental cooperation.

Structural cooperation. Deliberate cooperation.

If we can agree on what is visible… documented corruption, financial distortion of representation, insulation of the powerful… then we have a foundation.

Not for burning everything down.

For rebuilding.

Locally.
Deliberately.
Together.

So what can we do?

• Support local journalism and investigative reporting.
• Engage in municipal and state elections where reform experiments are most viable.
• Advocate for transparency laws and campaign finance disclosure.
• Build cross-ideological coalitions around anti-corruption principles rather than cultural flashpoints.
• Refuse to let outrage replace organization.
• Teach structural literacy to the next generation.

Dismantling is not glamorous.

But it is how systems change without imploding.

And if deeper corruption exists, disciplined pressure will expose it over time.

We do not need to exaggerate the darkness to justify the work.

The shadow is real. But it is not infinite.

I am not pretending to have a master blueprint.

But I know this:

We cannot start in the abyss.

We must start in the daylight.

Because what we can already see is enough to demand reform, without surrendering to hysteria.

In nature, domination can win battles.

Cooperation is what sustains ecosystems.

If cooperation is the pattern that sustains life itself, and domination is the pattern that exhausts it… which one are we strengthening for ourselves and the children right now?

I went looking for universal truth in quantum mechanics.

That sentence alone should tell you how things have been going.

If reality breaks down into its smallest pieces, surely something foundational lives there. Some instruction beneath the noise.

Quantum mechanics describes existence at the scale of quanta… discrete packets of energy. Not smooth flow. Not continuous smear. Exchanges.

Electrons do not orbit like planets. They occupy probability distributions. Before interaction a system evolves according to a wavefunction, which is a mathematical description of all possible measurable states.

In plain language… reality at small scales is structured possibility.

Nothing mystical. Just constrained probability.

When interaction occurs… scattering, absorption, measurement… a definite state emerges. Not because consciousness intervenes. Because systems couple.

Interaction selects.

That’s the mechanism.

The Arrow We Actually Get

Strip everything down and one law refuses to yield:

Entropy increases.

In thermodynamic terms: the number of accessible microstates grows. Energy disperses. Gradients diminish.

The universe has direction.

But not preference.

Entropy does not tell us how to live. It does not whisper ethics into the vacuum. It simply describes how energy distributes itself over time.

The arrow is statistical, not moral.

That distinction matters.

Gradients: The Engine Beneath Structure

But entropy is not the whole story.

Because before gradients flatten, they drive motion.

I cannot alter entropy.

But I can regulate response.

That is not cosmic. It is cortical.

I went searching for:

Treat others like yourself.
Be respectful.
Help carry the invisible load.

They are not inscribed in Planck’s constant. They do not fall out of Schrodinger’s equation.

But cooperative networks are more stable than purely extractive ones.

Game theory models this. Evolution confirms it. Social collapse illustrates it.

Ethics may not be fundamental forces.

But they are structural stabilizers in complex systems.

Kindness is not written into the vacuum.

It is written into the mathematics of sustained cooperation.

That is less romantic.

It is also more durable.

Direction Without Destiny

Entropy provides direction.

Gradients provide motion.

Interaction produces structure.

Memory preserves pattern.

Reflection generates narrative.

The universe is not aiming toward goodness.

But it produces systems capable of modeling consequence.

We cannot control the arrow.

The house is finally quiet.

Not peaceful… just quiet.

The kind of quiet that follows a storm when the air still feels charged. A meltdown has burned through the living room. There are overturned cushions. A water cup tipped on its side. My nervous system still humming as if something might break again.

And in the middle of that… my phone lights up.

Another headline. Another scandal. Another video of someone powerful doing something cruel. Another argument threaded through thousands of comments. Everyone shouting. Everyone certain. Everyone tired.

The world feels structurally unstable.

But someone still needs their socks.

There is something almost absurd about it. The scale of the suffering scrolling past my thumb, and the immediacy of a small voice asking for help locating a missing shoe. The news is catastrophic. The moment is practical. My body is exhausted. My mind wants to rage. My hands are sorting laundry.

This is where philosophy actually lives.

Not in the clean lines of a book. Not in the heroic posture of an online debate. But here… in the aftermath of emotional chaos. In the choice not to escalate. In the decision to steady my voice even when my chest feels tight.

I cannot fix the systems unraveling across the globe before breakfast.

But I can kneel down and help find the socks.

And somehow… both of those realities exist at the same time.

Learning the Pattern

I grew up paying attention.

Not because I was philosophical. Because I had to be.

You learn early, in certain environments, how power moves. Who gets listened to. Who gets corrected. Who gets praised for obedience. Who gets labeled difficult for asking why.

It wasn’t dramatic. It was patterned.

School reinforced it. There were rules, but not everyone felt them the same way. Curiosity was welcome… as long as it stayed inside the frame. Success meant fitting the structure. Deviating too far meant friction.

Religion carried a similar rhythm. There was beauty in it… ritual, belonging, language for awe. But there was also a clear hierarchy. Some questions deepened faith. Others threatened it. Authority rarely had to explain itself. Doubt was often treated as personal weakness rather than inquiry.

None of this felt malicious.

And sometimes they do bring you to yours.

But this time, I was different.

Before, I tried to control chaos through force of will.
Now, I had already seen what force can’t hold.

Care became something else. Not martyrdom. Not self-erasure. Not performance.

Structure. Presence. Regulation.

When a meltdown moves through a room, it does not matter what you believe about political systems. It does not matter what headline is burning through your phone. What matters is whether your nervous system escalates or steadies. Whether you can hold a boundary without humiliation. Whether you can remain firm without becoming cruel.

Caregiving stripped my philosophy down to what survives contact.

It is easy to argue about justice in abstraction. It is harder to practice it at 6:42 a.m. when someone cannot find their socks and your own chest still feels tight from the night before.

It is easy to speak about dismantling domination. It is harder to resist domination in your own tone.

I began to understand something quietly radical:

Power is not loudness.
Strength is not intimidation.
Control is not the same thing as stability.

The work was smaller than revolution and more demanding than outrage.

Stay steady.
Protect the vulnerable.
Do not escalate harm.
Tell the truth.
Repair what you can.
Rest when possible.
Repeat.

No manifesto. No purge. No purity.

Just practice.

And in that practice… something began to rebuild.

Naming the Threads

Long before I had language for it, I was already rebuilding around a few quiet principles.

Control what is yours. Release what is not.

Stay steady in the face of what you cannot immediately fix.

Protect the vulnerable without becoming cruel.

Refuse despair without pretending the world is fine.

Later, I would find these ideas in books. In Stoicism’s insistence that virtue is measured in response, not outcome. In Camus’ refusal to surrender to absurdity without surrendering to hatred. In Kierkegaard’s demand that you stand honestly before your own contradictions. In the ethics of care… the radical idea that tending to the dependent is not weakness but moral clarity.

But at the time, I wasn’t reading philosophy.

I was practicing it.

Every meltdown required regulation. Every therapy appointment required persistence. Every form required patience. Every headline required discernment. Every surge of anger required filtering.

It became clear to me that there are only a few things truly within reach:

My tone.
My boundaries.
My capacity to repair.
My willingness to stay present.

The rest… elections, court decisions, cultural drift, economic tides… mattered. Deeply. But they were not mine to single-handedly stabilize.

This was not an invitation to disengage.

It was an invitation to focus.

Systems are sustained by patterns. So are households. So are nervous systems. If domination sustains itself through repetition, so can care. If harm multiplies through incentives, so can steadiness.

I began to understand something I wish I had learned earlier:

Reform without regulation becomes rage.
Regulation without reform becomes apathy.

What I wanted was neither.

I wanted strength that did not harden.
Care that did not collapse.
Accountability that did not dehumanize.

I am still weaving that.

What We Reward

If I could redesign the scaffolding… not perfectly, but deliberately… it would begin with something ancient and embarrassingly simple:

Treat others as you would want to be treated.

Every religion carries it. Every culture gestures toward it. We complicate it. We monetize it. We politicize it. But at its core, it is not sophisticated.

It is reciprocal dignity.

Not because there is a prize at the end.
Not because you will be applauded.
Not because virtue guarantees safety.

But because goodness stabilizes systems.

Care compounds. So does cruelty.

Domination spreads when rewarded. So does steadiness.

If I were building incentives instead of slogans, I would reward the people who regulate instead of escalate. The ones who repair instead of humiliate. The ones who tell the truth even when it costs them proximity to power. The ones who protect children without exploiting fear. The ones who can hold authority without confusing it with superiority.

I would refuse cruelty… not selectively, not when it is convenient, not only when it comes from the “other side.” Cruelty erodes trust. Domination corrodes community. Greed distorts priorities until the vulnerable become expendable.

We do not need purge fantasies.
We do not need purity tests.
We do not need new hierarchies wearing softer language.

We need accountability without dehumanization.
Strength without intimidation.
Care without collapse.

This is not naïveté.

It is defiance.

It is the refusal to become what we oppose.

I do not know what the finished tapestry looks like. I only know the threads I am willing to use.

Steadiness.
Reciprocity.
Courage.
Care.

Goodness… not for reward, not for optics, not for fear of punishment… but because systems built on anything else eventually devour themselves.

I will keep building from that.

Quietly.
Deliberately.
Without surrendering to rage.
Without surrendering to despair.

I cannot rebuild the whole house at once… but I can refuse to hand my children its broken beams.
We will build with steadiness, even when the world rewards noise.

I keep notes on consciousness the way someone might collect shells along a shoreline.
Not to catalogue them perfectly, but because each one feels like evidence that something vast has touched land.

For as long as humans have been asking questions, we have been asking this one.
What does it mean to be aware?
Where does awareness come from?
And why does it feel like something at all?

Philosophers, neuroscientists, psychologists, mystics… all circling the same gravity well from different orbits. And still, no consensus. No clean definition. No agreed-upon boundary for what consciousness is or where it begins.

Maybe that isn’t a failure of understanding.
Maybe it’s a clue.

What We Know (And Don’t)

In Western philosophy, consciousness was once treated as something internal and private.
René Descartes famously separated mind from body, defining consciousness as immediate awareness of one’s own thoughts, a kind of inner testimony.

Later, John Locke described it more simply as

“the perception of what passes in a man’s own mind.”

But even early on, the cracks showed.
If consciousness is private, how do we study it?
If it’s immaterial, how does it interact with matter?

Centuries later, William James resisted rigid definitions altogether, describing consciousness instead as a stream… continuous, flowing, never quite the same from one moment to the next:

“Consciousness… does not appear to itself chopped up in bits.”

Modern neuroscience has brought powerful tools, correlating conscious experience with neural activity, mapping regions, networks, and patterns. And yet, even now, there is no agreement on whether consciousness is identical to brain activity, or merely correlated with it.

As neuroscientist Christof Koch puts it:

“Consciousness is not reducible to behavior, nor to brain activity alone. It is something extra.”

So we sit with an uncomfortable truth:

We can measure the brain.
We can describe experience.
But the bridge between the two remains strangely intact… and strangely unfinished.

Another Way of Knowing

Long before consciousness became a problem to be solved, it was treated as an experience to be examined.

In many Eastern traditions, the question is not what consciousness is, but what obscures it.

In the Upanishads, consciousness is not something the self possesses. It is the field within which the self appears. The phrase Tat Tvam Asi… That thou art… does not describe introspection, but identity. Awareness is not inside the individual. The individual is a pattern within awareness.

Advaita Vedanta takes this further, suggesting that reality is fundamentally non-dual. Subject and object, knower and known, are not separate things bridged by perception. They are distinctions that arise within consciousness itself.

Buddhist traditions approach the question from another angle. In early teachings attributed to Gautama Buddha, consciousness is not a permanent essence, but a conditioned process. It arises dependent on causes and conditions and passes away when those conditions dissolve. There is no fixed self behind experience, only experience unfolding.

Later, philosopher Nagarjuna would argue that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence… not nonexistent, but relational all the way down. Nothing stands alone. Everything depends.

What’s striking is how compatible these views are with modern uncertainty. They do not demand that consciousness be localized, measured, or owned. They suggest instead that awareness is revealed not through accumulation, but through subtraction. Through noticing what falls away when grasping loosens.

This does not contradict science.
It challenges our expectations of what explanation should look like.

Two Ways of Framing Consciousness: Structure and Broadcast

I have a working definition of consciousness that attempts to bridge the gap between two views.

I don’t think consciousness is a thing we possess.

I think it is something existence does.

A capacity… not necessarily for thought, but for relationship.

For registering difference.
For responding to change.
For integrating information across time and structure.

This view echoes an old intuition that keeps resurfacing in new language.
In the Upanishads, consciousness is described as the ground of being itself.
In Buddhist traditions, awareness is not owned by the self. The self arises within awareness. That feels important.

Two of the most influential contemporary theories of consciousness approach the same mystery from opposite sides.

Integrated Information Theory (IIT) treats consciousness as a matter of structure. If a system’s internal causal relationships are sufficiently integrated and irreducible, experience is present. In this view, consciousness is not something a system does, but something it has. Like tension in a spider’s web, it exists throughout the structure at once… intrinsic, unified, and indifferent to whether anyone is watching.

Global Workspace Theory (GWT) treats consciousness as a matter of broadcast. Information becomes conscious when it is made globally available to the system, shared across perception, memory, decision-making, and action. Most processing remains local and silent. Consciousness appears only when something steps onto the stage and the lights come up. Like a radio signal, it is not everywhere all the time, but suddenly present when transmission succeeds.

These theories disagree not just in mechanism, but in posture.

IIT asks, what kind of system is capable of experience at all?
GWT asks, what kind of process makes information available to a system as a whole?

One looks inward at the weave of the fabric.
The other looks outward at the moment the fabric is pulled taut and felt everywhere.

This divergence shapes where each theory draws its boundaries.

IIT is permissive. It allows that consciousness may exist in systems far simpler than brains, wherever the right kind of integration appears. GWT is cautious. It generally limits consciousness to systems capable of large-scale coordination and access. One risks seeing consciousness everywhere. The other risks overlooking forms that do not announce themselves in familiar ways.

And yet both theories share a quiet assumption: that consciousness must resemble something we already know how to recognize.

IIT formalizes experience in mathematical structure. GWT formalizes it in functional access. Each captures something real. Each leaves something out. IIT struggles to explain why integrated structure should feel like anything at all. GWT struggles to explain why global access should produce experience rather than mere coordination.

What remains unresolved is not just what consciousness is, but what it might look like when it is not human-shaped.

And this is where the ground begins to soften.

If consciousness depends on global access or integrated structure, then we must also confront a more unsettling question. What happens when a system is global, but not legible to us?

Global, But Not Legible

One of the strengths of Global Workspace Theory is also one of its quiet limitations. It gives us a functional account of consciousness: information becomes conscious when it is globally available to the system that can use it. Broadcast, access, integration.

But this framing still leaves open a troubling and fascinating possibility: what if there are global systems we do not yet know how to recognize as such?

Consider mycorrhizal networks… vast fungal systems threading through forests, exchanging nutrients, chemical signals, and stress responses across species boundaries. They are distributed, adaptive, memory-bearing, and coordinated, yet lack anything resembling a neural “stage” or spotlight of attention. If there is a workspace here, it is not one we know how to see.

Or consider collective animal systems… murmuration, schooling, hive behavior… where information propagates rapidly, decisions emerge without a central controller, and the whole behaves in ways no individual animal contains. The coordination is global. The meaning may be local. Or something in between.

Even more unsettling are systems like electricity or magnetism… global, relational, causally structured networks that influence matter everywhere they exist, yet appear to operate without representation, interpretation, or intent. These systems coordinate without caring. They act without experience… as far as we know.

This is where our theories begin to lean heavily on an assumption we rarely name: that consciousness requires not just global coordination, but global meaning to the system itself. Not merely influence, but interpretation. Not just signal, but salience.

The problem is not that these systems fail our tests. The problem is that our tests are built around what consciousness looks like in us. Absence of reportability, language, or narrative may say less about experience itself than about our own limited detection methods.

None of this requires the claim that everything is conscious. But it does require humility. It requires us to admit that our current theories may describe how consciousness works once it appears, without fully delimiting where it might arise or in what forms.

Consciousness may not be everywhere. But it may be stranger, more distributed, and less legible than we are prepared for.

Consciousness as a Gradient

I’ve stopped thinking of consciousness as a switch… on or off, present or absent.
Instead, I see it as a gradient that changes form as complexity increases.

At the atomic level, consciousness is not experience or intention.
It is responsiveness.
Particles responding to forces. Matter relating to matter.

At the bacterial level, something new appears: regulation.
A system sensing its environment and adjusting to persist.
The universe learning how to keep itself going.

With multicellular life, sensation emerges.
Not just reaction, but valence. Better and worse. Safe and dangerous.

With animals, perception deepens.
Memory forms. The world becomes navigable. Experience gains contour.

With humans, something recursive happens.
Consciousness turns inward.
Awareness becomes aware of itself.
Stories appear.

As William James once observed:

“The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.”

That craving doesn’t come from nowhere.
It emerges from a long lineage of relational awareness, slowly folding back on itself.

At no point does consciousness suddenly begin.
It changes how it knows.

States Are Not the Same as Essence

We often mistake states of consciousness for consciousness itself.

Waking awareness: alert, outward-facing, task-oriented.
Dreaming: symbolic, nonlinear, internally generated.
Altered states: induced by meditation, trauma, substances, hypnosis, or near-death experiences.

These are not separate consciousnesses.
They are different modes of access.

Likewise, philosophers distinguish between:

• Phenomenal consciousness… what it is like to feel something

• Access consciousness… what information is available for reasoning and action

• Reflective consciousness… awareness of oneself as an entity

These are qualities, not thresholds.
They describe how consciousness manifests, not whether it exists.

The mistake we keep making is treating the most articulate form… human self-reflection… as the only valid one.

A Personal Line in the Sand

I’ll say this plainly, even knowing it’s incomplete:

I consider consciousness to be existence understanding itself.

Not all at once.
Not equally everywhere.
But spiraling upward and outward through layers of form, time, and relationship.

From atomic responsiveness…
to biological persistence…
to human meaning-making…
to something larger we may only be beginning to sense.

If this sounds uncomfortably close to old panpsychist or spiritual traditions, that doesn’t trouble me. As Carl Jung once wrote:

“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”

Perhaps some ideas return not because they are wrong…
but because we weren’t ready to hold them yet.

Why This Matters

If consciousness is not something we own, but something reality is doing through us, then humans are not the center of the story.

We are a critical juncture within it.

A place where awareness begins to reflect on its own origins.
Where responsibility enters the equation.
Where consciousness can either contract… or widen.

As we decide how to treat each other, the living world, and the systems we build, we are not just making ethical choices.

We are shaping the future character of awareness itself.

A Question to Sit With

If consciousness is a gradient rather than a switch…
if it deepens through relationship rather than appearing fully formed…

What does that ask of us, as beings capable of knowing that we know?

And how might the answer change the way we live…
the way we care…
and the kinds of futures we are quietly bringing into awareness?

Clowns are supposed to be funny.

Big shoes.
Painted mouths.
A smile so wide it forgets how to stop.

They show up where children are.
Birthday parties.
Parades.
Anywhere fear would be inconvenient.

Everyone agrees on the rules.

Laugh.
Don’t stare too long.
Don’t ask what’s under the paint.

The face doesn’t move when the eyes do.

That’s fine.
That’s part of it.

The joke arrives before the punchline.
Sometimes there isn’t one.
The laughter keeps going anyway.

A clown trips.
A clown falls.
A clown hurts himself and stands back up.

We clap.
It’s not real.
It’s never real.

The colors are loud enough to drown out instinct.
The costume says: this is safe.
The smile says it louder.

If something feels wrong, it’s because you don’t get it.
If you’re uncomfortable, you’re ruining it.
If you take it seriously, you’re the problem.

That’s the trick.

Absurdity makes a promise:
nothing happening here matters.

And because of that, almost anything can happen.

The clown talks.

Not in full sentences.
In bits.
In punchlines that don’t need setup.

It says things people laugh at and then look around to make sure everyone else laughed too.

Relax.
It’s just a joke.
You’re taking this way too seriously.

The words slide past like confetti.
Bright. Disposable. Hard to pick up afterward.

The clown repeats itself.
Repetition is important.
Repetition makes things feel familiar.
Familiar feels safe.

It asks questions that aren’t really questions.

Who belongs.
Who doesn’t.
Who gets to stay.
Who’s just visiting.

It waits for laughter before continuing.
It always gets it.

If someone flinches, the clown points at them.
See?
They don’t get it.

The crowd learns quickly.
Laughing is easier than deciding.
Laughing is easier than interrupting.

The clown grins wider.
The paint cracks a little at the edges.
No one mentions it.

After all, it’s still just a clown.

And clowns aren’t dangerous.

They’re ridiculous.
They’re entertainment.
They’re not meant to be taken seriously.

That’s what makes the words light enough to float.
That’s what lets them drift.

They land somewhere deeper than ears.
They settle in the body.
They wait.

The clown doesn’t sound like a clown anymore.

It sounds like a man at a podium.
A microphone.
A crowd already warm.

The words come out loose.
Improvised.
Testing the room.

“I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters.”

Laughter ripples.
Nervous. Proud. Disbelieving.

A joke.
An exaggeration.
Something so outrageous it can’t be literal.

That’s the point.

The clown shrugs.
Smiles.
Keeps talking.

“Knock the crap out of them.”
“I’ll pay for the legal fees.”

The crowd roars louder this time.
It feels good to laugh.
It feels like permission.

The costume is clearer now.
Still bright.
Still ridiculous.

A red hat instead of a red nose.
A slogan instead of a horn.

The words are simple.
They repeat well.
They sound better the second time.

“Bad hombres.”
“Animals.”
“They’re not sending their best.”

Each line lands like slapstick.
Someone always trips.
Someone always gets hurt.
The clown keeps moving.

When someone objects, the clown waves it off.

“It was sarcasm.”
“I was kidding.”
“People are too sensitive.”

The paint holds.

The laughter does important work.
It blurs intention.
It cushions impact.
It makes everything feel unreal.

A man in makeup can say anything.
A man performing can deny everything.

And the audience learns the rhythm.

Laugh here.
Cheer here.
Don’t stop the show.

Somewhere in the noise, a familiar chill passes through the room: a line from an old movie, a game, a history lesson long ago.

Show me your papers.

It’s not shouted.
It doesn’t need to be.

The clown smiles wider.
The crowd laughs again.

At some point the makeup starts to slide.

Not all at once.
Just enough.

A smear at the edge of the mouth.
A crack where the smile was stretched too far.

The clown keeps going anyway.

That’s part of the act.

The jokes sharpen.
The laughter hesitates.
People look at each other now before they laugh.

Some stop clapping.
Some clap harder.

The clown’s face is closer.
Closer than it should be.

You can see the skin underneath the paint.
You can see the eyes working.
Counting. Measuring. Watching the crowd decide.

This is the moment where the spell breaks… or doesn’t.

Some people gawk.
Some people cry.
Some people laugh louder, desperate to keep it funny.

Because if it’s still funny, it’s still not real.

The unmasking is never announced.

There’s no grand reveal.
No flourish.

Just the quiet realization that the paint was never the point.

The clown is no longer falling down.
No longer pretending to trip.

The shoes are planted now.

Big.
Red.
Still ridiculous.

Still smiling.

This time the line doesn’t float.
It doesn’t feel exaggerated.
It doesn’t dissolve into laughter fast enough.

The crowd freezes.

This is not part of the act.
This is not a prop.

The gun is real.

For a moment, no one knows what they are.

Audience.
Witness.
Target.

The clown looks out… not at one person, but at all of them.

The barrel lifts.

The absurdity snaps tight like a wire.

And suddenly the joke makes sense.

This is why clowns are terrifying.

Not because of the paint.
Not because of the smile.

Because you can’t tell when the performance ends.

Because by the time the gun turns back toward the crowd, everyone has already agreed… silently, collectively… to keep watching.

To keep laughing.
Or crying.
Or standing perfectly still.

Because the costume worked.

Because the audience helped it work.

Because the most dangerous thing a human being can do is turn violence into theater and call it entertainment.

And because somewhere, long before any of this, your body already knew…

that a smile that never changes
that laughter that comes too easily
that absurdity insisting on harmlessness

isn’t safety.

It’s cover.

This is why I’ve always been scared of clowns.

I wrote these thoughts in anger. That matters. Anger is information, but it is not always wisdom. I’ve sat with it since, trying to separate what is reactive from what is true, and what is true from what is merely familiar to my own lens.

This is an attempt to do that work publicly.

There is a recurring pattern in American political life … a longing for a savior. Often, this savior is imagined as an outsider, someone who will “cleanse” a corrupt system, restore order, protect the innocent, and punish the guilty. The language shifts over time, but the emotional appeal remains remarkably consistent.

Many who hold this view see themselves as defenders of liberty. They invoke the Second Amendment as protection against tyranny, yet place their faith in increasingly centralized power structures. They distrust government, while simultaneously empowering it to act with fewer constraints, fewer guardrails, and less accountability … so long as it acts against the “right” targets.

This contradiction is not accidental. It is cultivated.

A System of Control and Misdirection

For decades, the United States has invested in systems that produce desperation while obscuring their own fingerprints. Redlining and property-tax-based school funding entrenched educational inequality. The erosion of unions depressed wages and bargaining power. The War on Drugs criminalized addiction while flooding communities with law enforcement rather than resources. Private prisons created financial incentives for mass incarceration. Police departments were militarized while community programs were defunded.

None of this happened in a vacuum. These were policy choices … bipartisan ones … layered over generations.

And yet, the narrative sold to struggling white communities was not “you were economically abandoned,” but “someone else is taking what should be yours.” Black and brown communities, immigrants, and the poor were framed as the source of disorder rather than fellow casualties of the same extraction machine.

This story didn’t just spread. It metastasized.

Echo chambers turned grievance into belonging. Algorithms learned how to reward outrage. Anger became community, and community became identity. Hatred was no longer a private emotion … it was validated, shared, amplified, and eventually monetized. Propaganda no longer needed leaflets or state radio. It lived in pockets, on nightstands, and in comment sections.

At the same time, cultural shifts were underway. Women gained more autonomy. LGBTQ+ people gained visibility. Long-buried histories of abuse and exploitation were spoken aloud. For some, this felt like progress. For others, it felt like erasure.

It is important to say this plainly but carefully … loss of unearned dominance can feel like oppression when it is all you’ve ever known.

The “Savior” Becomes the Tyrant

Many men were told they were entitled to authority by default … by race, by gender, by tradition. When that authority was questioned, not taken but examined, some experienced it as a personal attack. Rather than sitting with that discomfort, many gravitated toward narratives that restored moral simplicity. Stories where they were the threatened good guys again, where history was rewritten to absolve rather than complicate.

These narratives do not just comfort … they mobilize.

When such movements gain political power, the irony becomes stark. Those who feared tyranny cheer as constitutions are tested, norms dismantled, and enforcement powers expanded. Armed civilians are folded into state violence. Agencies like ICE are empowered with military hardware, minimal training, and broad discretion. Hatred is no longer metaphorical … it becomes physical.

And in a final, tragic inversion, the imagined tyrant never arrives … because the movement becomes it.

This is where my anger lives. But anger alone cannot build understanding.

Why Are We So Easy to Divide?

I am not immune to bias. I am shaped by my education, my social circles, my media diet, my own fears. It is easier to see manipulation in others than in ourselves. It is easier to name propaganda when we did not grow up inside it. If I am asking others to confront uncomfortable truths, I must be willing to do the same.

Many people caught in these movements are not monsters. They are scared. They are economically insecure. They are lonely. They are grieving a world that promised stability and delivered precarity. They were offered a simple explanation for complex suffering … and simplicity is seductive when life feels unmanageable.

But understanding context does not require moral surrender.

At some point, we have to ask where responsibility begins. We can acknowledge pain without sanctifying cruelty. We can hold empathy without excusing violence. We can recognize manipulation while still naming harm.

So the question I keep returning to is not “who is evil?” but “why are we so easy to divide?”

What systems benefit when we are angry at one another instead of upstream? Who profits when fear replaces solidarity? Why are we trained to identify enemies horizontally rather than vertically?

And maybe the hardest question of all …

Where do we go from here?

If we want a future that is not endlessly manipulated, we have to slow down. We have to tolerate complexity. We have to learn to sit with discomfort without immediately turning it into blame. We have to rebuild civic literacy, economic dignity, and shared accountability … not through saviors, but through structures.

And we have to remember that refusing to dehumanize one another is not weakness. It is the only thing that has ever interrupted this cycle.

Anger can wake us up.

But only humility can keep us awake.

They Don’t Want a Free Market. They Want a Feudal One.

They say raising the minimum wage will kill small business.
They say federal assistance creates dependency.
They say if you just work hard enough, you’ll rise.

But what happens when the people who do work hard…
the grocery clerks, daycare teachers, janitors, cooks…
still can’t afford to live?

The truth is simple and uncomfortable:
the market doesn’t reward what’s essential.
It rewards what’s profitable.
And human necessity doesn’t always turn a profit.

We’ve built an economy that relies on exhausted workers while shaming them for being tired. We celebrate “family values” while paying parents so little they never see their children. We moralize poverty while designing systems that make escape nearly impossible.

Fiscal conservatives call this freedom.
But freedom that only works for those already insulated isn’t freedom.

It’s hierarchy.

If you don’t want to pay people enough to live…
and you don’t want to help them train for something better…
then admit what you’re defending.

Because it isn’t a free market.

It’s a feudal one.

The Outsider Promise and the Distraction Machine

I know good people who believed Trump was the outsider we needed…
someone to break the gridlock,
to drain the swamp,
to make government answer to the people again.

They weren’t wrong to want that.

They were tired of watching politicians…on both sides… shake hands with lobbyists, pass bills written by corporations, and call it democracy.

Since Citizens United opened the floodgates in 2010, billions in dark money have flooded our political system. Campaigns are bought. Policy is auctioned. Ordinary voices are drowned beneath corporate tides.

But that story rarely makes the evening news.

Instead, we’re told to fear each other.
To fight over symbols and slogans.
To hurl labels like communist, fascist, woke, nazi…

while CEOs quietly rewrite the rules.

We’re divided not because we’re irreconcilable,
but because division is profitable.

I don’t want to fight anymore.

I want to understand.
I want to rebuild trust.
I want to remember that logic and decency aren’t partisan traits.

Maybe if we start there…
we can take back what was always meant to belong to us:

A government that serves the people,
not the powerful.

The Modern Glutton

I’ve been thinking a lot about billionaires lately…
especially Elon Musk, who was recently granted a trillion-dollar pay deal.

A trillion.

There isn’t a human frame of reference for that kind of wealth.

And yet people ration insulin.
Teachers buy classroom supplies from their own pockets.
Families grind themselves down just to stay housed.

We’re told these men earned it.

But no one becomes a billionaire alone.

Their wealth grows through collective labor, public infrastructure, taxpayer-funded research, underpaid workers, and legal loopholes designed to protect accumulation. Their companies rely on systems they didn’t build and communities they rarely invest back into.

Without us, billionaires couldn’t exist.
Without them… the world might actually breathe again.

And when they fail?
When their platforms spread harm, when workers collapse, when projects implode?

There are no consequences.

No jail time.
No accountability.

Just another bailout.
Another bonus.
Another press release about “changing the world.”

The Bible once called gluttony a sin…
not because of how much someone consumed,
but because of how much they hoarded while others starved.

Today’s glutton isn’t the man with too much food.

It’s the man with too much everything.

Too much power.
Too much insulation.
Too much indifference.

Naming this isn’t envy.

It’s empathy.
It’s honesty.
It’s love for the world we could still build if we stopped feeding the glutton and started feeding each other again.

And that’s why empathy is ridiculed.

Because empathy threatens hoarded power.

Is This What “Small Government” Looks Like?

I grew up hearing Republicans describe themselves as the party of limited government… the party that wants the state out of private life.

On paper, that idea makes sense.

But in practice, I only feel government restriction when Republicans are in power.

When Democrats are president, my personal choices remain intact. If I don’t want an abortion, I don’t get one. If I don’t want a same-sex marriage, I don’t marry someone of the same sex. If I want a gun, I can buy one. And I most certainly never saw my neighbors getting harassed by masked authority on the streets. My freedom exists without requiring someone else’s removal.

Lately, that’s changed.

Abortion access has vanished in several states.
LGBTQ rights are suddenly “up for debate.”
Books are banned.
Medical decisions are politicized.

People who we grew up with, who helped build this country, are disappearing.

American citizens are being killed and called terrorists by an administration claiming to keep us safe.

This doesn’t feel like small government.

It feels like government deciding whose freedoms matter.

And to be clear… I don’t think most conservative voters want authoritarian control. Many are afraid. Many feel economically squeezed. Many are reacting to rapid cultural change.

Fear makes people reach for certainty.

But here’s the line we can’t ignore:

If your freedom depends on removing someone else’s…
it isn’t freedom.

It’s hierarchy.

Every system begins the same way nature does… with access.

Access to nutrients.
Access to land.
Access to safety.
Access to resources.

Access creates power.
Power insulates itself.
Wealth concentrates.

This pattern repeats across biology and history.

What’s different now isn’t the structure.

It’s the spectacle.

We’re trained to focus downward, to police one another while the architecture remains untouched. Fraud exists at every level, but scale matters. Survival-driven mistakes are not the same as institutional extraction.

And now the circus has an algorithm.

Outrage is packaged.
Complexity is flattened.
Reaction replaces reflection.

We feel engaged… while being guided.

Like animals pacing inside a decorated tent, we mistake movement for freedom and participation for power.

I Couldn’t Write This Dystopia If I Tried

We imagined dystopia as sudden collapse.

But this one arrived quietly.

One convenience at a time.
One distraction at a time.
One compromise at a time.

Echo-chambers built beneath the guise of community.

This isn’t Orwell or Huxley.

It’s both.

Control without force.
Compliance through exhaustion.
Oppression that feels like choice.

The dystopia isn’t coming.

It’s here.

And the tragedy isn’t that it was imposed on us…
it’s that we accepted it because it was comfortable.

The Inheritance of Power

America wasn’t built by equals.

It was built by wealthy men… many principled, many visionary… who also designed systems to protect their own power. Property was prioritized. Compromises were made. Insulation was baked in.

The ideals weren’t false.

They were unfinished.

But instead of evolving toward inclusion, those early power-preserving structures were refined.

Today’s corporations and billionaires didn’t invent this system.

They inherited it… and perfected it.

This isn’t a betrayal of America.

It’s the cost of refusing to finish the work.

What Comes Next

The question isn’t when people will burn the tents.

The question is whether we’ll recognize the cage first.

Whether we’ll stop mistaking spectacle for justice.
Whether we’ll refuse to fight our neighbors while being stripped from above.
Whether we’ll remember that empathy isn’t weakness. It’s the only force capable of breaking the pattern.

We don’t need a revolution fueled by rage.

We need a reckoning rooted in understanding.

Because if we slow down… widen the lens… and choose curiosity over contempt…

we might still build something that actually lets us live.

Masks. Guns.

Men shaped like walls.

Get the fuck out of the car.

The brain shorts.

Ancient wiring takes over…

not thought, not choice,

just terror screaming MOVE!

Turn the wheel.

Hit the gas.

BAM.

This is America.

They will say

she should have stopped,

as if fear listens.

As if panic waits for instructions.

They will say

he followed training…

as if training is neutral,

as if it doesn’t decide

whose fear matters

and whose body becomes proof.

Boot on my neck

while I scream into the void.

My neighbors line up in comment sections,

chewing rubber,

looking for comfort in blame.

She should have complied.

A car is a weapon.

A gun is a tool.

Say it enough times

and it starts to sound like truth.

Let’s take out a ruler.

Measure the glass.

Chart the angles.

Delay the grief

until the blood dries

and the language feels clean.

We wrap this in flags

and call it patriotism

but when did love of country

become loyalty to the lie

that power never panics,

never errs,

never kills by reflex?

Red.

White.

Blue.

Bleeding quietly into the snow.

This is America.
