Autumn Birch Eyes (24x36") Large Original Drawing #8692
Birch trees with eye-shaped branch scars
Birches with eyes. When a birch drops a lower branch, the bark grows over the wound and leaves a dark scar, often shaped like an eye. Paper birch bark also peels off in thin, papery curls. Birches, 2009. Pete, CC BY 2.0, via Flickr.

I've been drawing a lot of sunsets recently. I've finally nailed down a great batch of colorful archival inks that work with my pens to create these awesome gradient landscapes where the linear sky blends into the wavy ocean 😊🌅🤙 Sunset (18x24") Large Original Drawing #8494 $300
Twelve photos of one sunset, in order, 11 January 2009. Near the horizon the air bends the sun's light, so the sun looks squashed and split into layers. In the last frames its top edge turns green. That is called a green flash. Brocken Inaglory, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

Giant Sequoia (9x24") #8287 $200 · Redwood Pair (9x24") #8426 $175 Two separate originals, same size.
The Mother of the Forest, standing in the Crystal Palace, London, 1859. This is not a tree. It is the bark of one, stripped off a living sequoia in the Calaveras Grove in 1854 — sixty tons of it, taken to a height of 116 feet by men working from scaffolding — then shipped around Cape Horn and nailed back together over a wooden frame so that visitors could pay to stand inside a tree that was still, at that moment, alive in California and dying of the wound. It was shown on Broadway first, then here at Sydenham. The bark burned with the north end of the Crystal Palace in 1866. The tree itself dropped its foliage within a few years and stood dead in the grove for the rest of the century. The outrage did something, at least. Senator John Conness cited exhibitions like this one on the Senate floor when he argued for the bill that protected Yosemite in 1864 — the first time this country set land aside purely because it should not be destroyed. Sequoia Grove (9x12") Small Original Drawing #8282 $120
Big Trees, Calaveras Grove, hand-coloured lithograph. The grove I walked through, drawn by someone who had it described to them — the trunks are right and the foliage is guesswork. Public domain, Boston Public Library via Wikimedia Commons.
Two Redwoods (9x24") #7606 $150 · Redwood Tree (9x24") Left-Hand-Drawn to Order $125 One that exists, one drawn for you.
Carleton Watkins, the Grizzly Giant, Mariposa Grove, 1860s. Watkins hauled a mammoth-plate camera and a darkroom tent up the Sierra to make negatives eighteen inches wide. Prints like this one are what finally settled the argument about whether the trees were real. Public domain, Getty via Wikimedia Commons.
Leaning Redwood Tree (18x72") #5085 $500 · Pair of Redwood Trees (18x72") #4959 $1,000 Both six feet tall. Both one of one.
The Discovery Tree stump, four ways. Five men felled it in 1853 by drilling through the trunk with pump augers, because no saw on the continent was long enough. Twenty-two days of work. The rings came to 1,244 years. Then they planed the top flat and made it a room. Thirty-two people could dance a cotillion up there at once with space left over for the band — that is the second panel, and the engraver counted them. A bar and a two-lane bowling alley went up on the fallen trunk beside it. By 1861 there was a domed pavilion standing over the stump itself, running as the grove’s post office. The snow of 1862 flattened the bar and the bowling alley. Bottom right is what is standing there now. Felling engraving, 1853, and the cotillion plate: public domain. Redwood Grove #7211 · 9x22", ink and colour on kraft, 2026.
Sequoia gigantea, wood engraving, 1873. Note the cabin at the base — nineteenth-century prints almost always put a building or a crowd of people in the frame, because without one nobody believed the proportions. Public domain, Popular Science Monthly via Wikimedia Commons.
Lil’ Redwood Scene (6x18") Small Mounted Drawing #7208 $200
Tourists inside a fire-hollowed sequoia, wood engraving, 1887. Fire is how these trees live: the bark runs up to eighteen inches thick and does not burn through, the heat is what cracks the cones open, and a tree can carry a hollow like this one for centuries and keep growing. Public domain, Die Gartenlaube via Wikimedia Commons.

Big Cypress (18x36") Large Original Drawing #8328 $400 Might be the most tree-looking tree I’ve ever drawn. Four tiers of canopy, a trunk that leans and then thinks better of it, roots spiralling out into the landscape.
The circulatory system drawn as a tree, next to a plate of rock-art figures who are also, more or less, trees.

Mangrove & Bald Cypress Diptych (14x30" each) Two Large Original Drawings, #7713 & #7714, sold together $400 the pair

Cypress #008330 · ink on kraft, 2026. Four tiers again, an S-curve trunk that never quite straightens, and the whole root system as above so as below.
A podocarpus pruned in the niwaki manner, Katori, Japan. Japanese garden pruning strips the inner growth every year so the remaining foliage sits in discrete stacked shelves, and a gardener will hold one tree in that shape for a century. Which is the same silhouette the wind makes for free on the Monterey coast — one done deliberately over a hundred years, the other done by salt air in about the same time. CC BY 3.0, Wikimedia Commons.
Drawing of a Drawing of a Cypress Tree (50x80") Extra Large Original Drawing #5139 $1,800
The Tree of Life, Kalaloch Beach. A Sitka spruce, 100 to 150 years old, hanging over a hollow in the bluff with most of its root system dangling in open air. It is there because of a drainage pipe: a culvert laid in the 1960s to run campground water down to the beach cut a small canyon, and the canyon went straight under the tree. The park’s erosion barriers made it worse — they pushed the scour to the point where the barriers stop, which is exactly where the tree stands. About a third of its roots still hold ground. It is still green. Park staff have said it could go in five years, in forty, or tomorrow. Which is the whole issue, really: every one of these trees is a shape made by whatever was happening to the ground underneath it. CC0, Wikimedia Commons.
Knotted Plank (9x24") Medium Original Drawing #8425 $100
Shout out to Trees. I love them.
Cypress #007921 · ink on kraft, 2026. A striped night going black to blue to purple, one crescent moon, and the tiers doing what they always do.
