Greetings!

Recently, I visited Oxford for the second time and reader, I think I fell for it harder than the first.

Hopping from the train and into the arms of my Oxfordian pal, I could feel the joyous weight of knowledge, learning, and thinking in the air.

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect autumn day too; bright blue skies, a crisp breeze, and easy temperatures.

We walked and talked. Stopping at museums, galleries, beautiful shops, and for the fuel of any reader - caffeine and pastries.

Listened to;

• On the journey there and back - the Audible adaptation of Dracula. I’m not a Audible user but this was recommended by several people and Dracula is one of my favourite books. My verdict - Gary Oldman is still the best Dracula, but the adaptation was excellent, giving the women of the story more time, autonomy, and way more narrative drive. Loved it!

Watched;

• Verity - again, not something that was really on my radar other than the fact I know it was about an author and ghostwriter. I’ve not read any of Colleen Hoover’s books and went to see this very much on the strength of me being on holiday and treating myself. The cinema alone is a treat for me. My verdict - great jump scares, Anne Hathaway was excellent. Its a stunning location with stunning actors, and for those reasons I enjoyed it, even if I was like what?? during parts of the film. I heard a couple of conversations on the way out which both said the book was better, isn’t it always?

Enjoy some Oxford photos from my trip.

I'm having tech issues with one of the platforms I use for publishing my books.

Earthly Bodies is fine, and the new covers are everywhere 🥳

The Dark Beneath Us is ebook is everywhere, the paperback is in one place (guess where!) but isn't wide yet because of some clunky back end thing that I'm working on.

My new baby needs some reviews, so if you've already read it, please feel free to review on your favourite platform.

I'll drop a longer update soon.

Please take care of each other ❤️‍🩹

I’ve been pretty quiet around here mainly because I needed a break from being online, but also because I subscribe to the European idea of taking August off.

Despite not documenting it, life has gone on as it always does. Hospital appointments, gardening, resting, and re-prioritising have all been on my metaphorical agenda. I've been sleeping a lot!

Over August I've found myself watching The Sewing Bee (for none UK readers- this is a TV series which is basically a sewing competition over about ten episodes) and I've rediscovered my joy in making things to wear. I made this dress, after not sewing anything for about a decade! The fabric was £2.50 from a local charity shop.

In book news, all Kickstarter orders are complete and should be in readers hands now, if not very soon. Thank you for your support. Even if you didn't manage to back the campaign this time, I appreciate every share, like, and real life conversation you might've had about my books 💗.

I'll be switching over the old (and still gorgeous) Earthly Bodies paperback cover across all sales platforms over the next week or so, so if you want that cover specifically, now is the time to buy.

The Dark Beneath Us will be released very soon across all platforms, so if you missed the Kickstarter do keep a lookout for your opportunity to get a copy. Paperback and ebook only… I might set up a way to get hardbacks if there's a lot of curiosity around me doing so. Let me know if this is you.

Change is in the air for September, it's my favourite month. I'm excited to get into autumn, rewatch Gilmore Girls and ponder my next move.

Whhoooooop! 🎉🎉

This is where I'm up to;

• Hardback bundle ✅

• The Dark Beneath Us ebook ✅

• Add-ons (Earthly Bodies ebook and Dark Is The Water ebook) ✅

Still to do;

• Paperback bundle (my biggest seller)

• Single copies of The Dark Beneath Us paperback

• Single copies of the hardback

I should complete these orders over the next couple of days. Ebook readers have already been downloading their copies, and I'm so excited to get these physical versions out and into readers hands.

Some of you will know, I've already begun writing my next book. Honestly, not with a huge amount of momentum yet, but I'm chipping away at it. I think it might be a novella, which is around half the length of my usual length novels 35-45k words.

I'll leave you with a photo straight out of my phone, no edits, from an golden hour stroll around a local park. This Cheshire, England, not the Mediterranean, despite appearances.

May your days be safe and your heart full.

I'm over the moon and this is a note just incase you wanted to back the campaign but haven't yet had chance.

Click the image below and it'll take you through to the Kickstarter page.

The Dark Beneath Us is live on Kickstarter.

The Dark Beneath Us is a stand-alone prequel — which means if you’ve read Earthly Bodies, you already know where this story ends. What you don’t know is how it began.

What happened before? What was buried?

What does the land remember?

It’s set in the Peak District at the end of World War Two. There are inheritances, fungi, and a landscape that is very much alive.

For those of you who haven’t backed a Kickstarter before, your pledge is taken at the end of the campaign and only if the campaign has reached/surpassed its target amount.

I hope to see you over there!

Susan

Friends and readers,

The time has come, I'm setting the date.

Monday 8th June 2026 - The Dark Beneath Us goes live on Kickstarter.

Everything is connected (this was never just a tagline).

The new cover of Earthly Bodies is available via the Kickstarter too.

Thank you for sticking with me. For the messages, the reviews, the photos of my book on your shelves and in your hands in places I’ve never been. For telling people.

The story isn’t finished yet. This is me asking for your support in birthing this book into the world.

For those of you who haven’t backed a Kickstarter before, your pledge is only taken at the end of the campaign and if the campaign has reached/surpassed its target funding amount.

I hope to see you over there!

Susan

I'm a reader, before I'm a writer, and like many readers, I often find it tricky finding new things to read.

It's not because there aren't enough books out there. There are plenty.

In fact, many people believe the market is oversaturated with books.

4.2 million books were published in the USA in 2025 (source - Publishers Weekly, March 23, 2026)

There's a pressure for authors to produce multiple books per year. To try and feed the perceived hunger of the reader. The rate of consumption, if you will. Readers are "devouring" books.

As an author, I can’t do this. Sometimes I wish I could!

Maybe the reader is hungry because they are consuming fast food. The type of food that fills in the moment so you feel satiated. But an hour later you are hungry again.

No shade if this is you btw. AND I'm not saying these are bad books. Everyone is different and the market clearly caters for that. You do you

There's obviously more to this than the surface level stuff, there are so many moving parts in our lives and our creativity. Maybe we only have bandwidth for a certain type of book - living under capitalism, our time often isn't our own.

I have been thinking about books and the creation of books. About all the possibilities with all the new technology we all have at our fingertips. And about why my work takes so long.

I ask, isn’t a great meal worth waiting for? I hope so.

My work isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for something that has fermented, stewed, and steeped for an age, something that has a flavour that is deep and complex. Then it might be for you.

I believe when it boils down to it, creativity is a labour of love.

Much like my cooking, the main ingredient in my books is love. These are a labour of love.

Caveat for all you literal thinkers out there - these are not romance books.

(Some of these thoughts were inspired by something I read by )P.S. If you want to make sure you don’t miss the launch, you can follow the Kickstarter project page now. Kickstarter will notify you the moment it goes live.

I remember the particular quality of that morning. The strange mix of terror and relief that comes when something you’ve made, something that has lived entirely inside you, becomes a thing that exists in the world.

You, lovely readers, were some of those people. And I’ve never quite got over the fact that you read it.

This time last year I wrote to you and told you about a new cover. About fungal twins, forever intertwined. About a sister book taking shape. About a universe, of sorts: two stories that hold hands across time.

Everything is connected (this was never just a tagline).

The Dark Beneath Us is the other half.

It’s a prequel — which means if you’ve read Earthly Bodies, you already know where this story ends. What you don’t know is how it begun. What happened before. What was buried. What the land remembers.

It’s set in the Peak District at the end of World War Two. There are witches, and sacrifice, and fungi, and a landscape that is very much alive.

It’s taken longer than I planned. You know this, you’ve been kind enough to stay through the honest updates, the health flares, the life blending into work and back again. I’m grateful for the patience.

But it’s coming.

I'm a hair’s breadth away, aka, I'm this👌🏻close to pressing the launch button.

The Dark Beneath Us is coming on Kickstarter sooooooon!

The new Earthly Bodies cover, the one that belongs to this universe, is exclusive to this campaign. It doesn’t exist anywhere else yet. Backers will be the first people in the world to own both books, with the matching covers, in story order.

The original Earthly Bodies cover, the one some of you have on your shelves, won’t be available on retail platforms forever. If you want it, the window is still open.

Five years is a long time to tend something.

Thank you for being here. For the messages, the reviews, the photos of my book on your shelves and in your hands in places I’ve never been. For telling people. For coming back.

The story isn’t finished yet.

Things are a lot right now.

The fall of empires is always messy. Not just the ones in the news. Not just the ones happening across the world, that aren't getting the coverage they deserve. There are empires and systems crumbling in our personal lives too. Everyone I know is at some kind of threshold moment.

We are all holding our breath waiting for the new epoch to begin. What will happen?

But this isn’t like a light switch or a simple turn in the road. This is like the road to Mordor. Riddled with obstacles, diversions, distractions, danger.

All of this, gestures around widely, will affect us. In addition to what’s happening in our own lives. Especially if you’re the neuro-spicy version of human. It affects our capacity and our bandwidth.

It can be so distracting that it stops us from living our lives, keeping us in a holding position. Tense, and again with the breath, holding it, waiting for it to feel safe enough to exhale. Waiting for that feeling of being ready. Waiting for permission.

Here’s the thing. No one is going to give us permission to breathe again. We have to take a breath, otherwise we are going to suffocate.

It’s hard to create when you can’t breathe.

It’s hard to live when you can’t breathe.

I don’t have the answers here. I don’t pretend to, but what I am feeling, on a good day, is that we are at the edge of something great. Call me delulu. But there’s no going back after this moment (this is a long moment, don’t get me wrong).

I think we are on the edge of the biggest trust fall we’ve ever known.

My advice; process what is going on however you can. Write it out, paint your feelings, research ways to help, teach kids something different and from your heart. Do something with your hands that isn’t doom-scrolling. But also REST. Rest without guilt. Rest like your life depends on it, because it does. We can’t do anything from a place of depletion.

What you make or build now matters so much. What you do matters. Even if it feels like the smallest, most pointless thing.

If we keep holding our breath, they win.

First of off let me set the scene; allow me to plant some images into your mind. Some of these are pretty niche.

Caveat - I feel like this probably isn't just an neurodivergent Xennial thing, but that's who I am and so that the the lens through which I'm seeing/writing.

• Rupert the Bear (when has he not been around?)

• Beatrix Potter stories, specifically the ballet film version (1971)

• Bagpuss (1974)

• The Wind in the Willows, specifically the TV show (1984)

• The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, specifically the BBC series (1988)

• Run Swift, Run Free (1986) by Tom McCaughren

• The Animals of Farthing Wood (1979) by Colin Dann

• Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds (1981)

• Around the World with Willy Fog (1983)

Now anthropomorphism is nothing new (hello Disney) but as you can see from this list above, there's no Disney here.

After pondering this lack of Disney/Pixar etc, despite the megalithic amount featuring anthropomorphic characters, I've decided it's something to do with the style of animation and the ubiquitousness of Disney. In my mind, Disney is somehow too clean and polished. Everything listed above is either in literature (and my imagination) or some oddball one-off series or film. And they're not all strictly anthropomorphic (walking on two legs as well as the more obvious human traits). So there's the weird factor.

So, to the above ingredients, add an AuDHD girl growing up in 80s/90s UK, who often preferred animals and books to people. Mix well with chronic health conditions, motherhood, and season with a generous pinch of neoliberalism.

That girl reaches her forties and grows increasingly untethered to everyone else, whilst also finally understanding herself much more.

The original whimsical list has grown up into something animalistic and feral;

• Nightbitch by

• A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers

• The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter

• Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield

• Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh

• Bunny by Mona Awad

• The Lamb by

Do you recognise this whimsical to feral pipeline?

Please tell me what I've missed off these lists.

It was here that I chatted to an agent about my next project, it was here I met writers from all over the country, and it was here that I realised I needed to start my own in-person writing group.

This is something I'd been mulling over for a while, but me knowing my brain better than I ever have before (ADHD along with a chronic health condition) knew that it would take a lot from me. A lot that I wasn't sure I had the capacity to give.

Another highlight from 2025 is that I began to reach out to local writers. I suppose I was testing the waters for what future me wanted to create.

One of those writers, is a local author, and readers, when we met In-Real-Life it was as if we'd known each other for years. Interests, upbringing, brains, creativity, Labyrinth, I could go on.

Anyway, Samantha B. Cummings is a YA fantasy author with a love of dark academia. She has a brilliant podcast aimed at indie authors and you should totally go check out her Instagram.

So, in short we've decided to team up and co-host an in-person writing group in Macclesfield.

There's been quite a bit of interest already, enough for me to be slightly concerned the venue may not be big enough, but I'm sure it'll all work out. There are a couple of alternatives so let's just see what happens.

We are looking at once a month to begin with so we can get an idea of interest, and our own capacity.

It will be on a Tuesday evening at a central Macclesfield location. We have a venue but need to get an idea of numbers to make sure we can fit.

This will be a co-writing session, with time allocated for chat. At this stage it's very much about meeting other local authors and getting words down, not about workshops or learning.

If you're a writer who is geographically close to me, then do register your interest.

The direct form link is this one.

Until next time.

There are so many ways to mark time and the Gregorian calendar was invented by a man so please don't be trying to strive/slay/crush any goals you have. You probably just need a rest.

Anyway, I've seen these In/Out lists around the internet and thought I'd jump on the bandwagon, having not jumped on any bandwagons for a while (see previous post).

In

• Learning to trust the pace of my creativity.

• Play isn’t something you just tick off a list (the irony!)

• Blowing everyone’s minds.

• Magic (my word of the year).

Out

• Overthinking.

• Feeling guilty when resting.

• Pushing through when I'm (sensorily or any other way) overwhelmed.

• Being dehydrated.

Tell me yours?

And yes, my next book IS COMING this year 🍄‍🟫

It's been a while hasn't it?

Life happens while you're busy making other plans. And I had *so many* plans for 2025.

*Scroll down for the TL;DR (too long; didn't read version)*

Content warning ⚠️ Medical Procedures

One month ago, I drafted this letter and I was convinced I'd be posting it from bed, after a full hysterectomy.

Endometriosis and adenomyosis have been my internal companions for decades.

Over the years, I've repeatedly been offered this procedure, and I'd repeatedly turned it down. It felt too soon.

Then, at the start of the school summer holidays - mid July (the timing of this stuff has always been incredible) I ended up in A+E with what I believe was a ruptured cyst on one of my ovaries. I was out of action for a while. I chased my consultant. Fast forward to early September, the day after I turned 45. I finally saw my gynecologist. He suggested hysterectomy, and this time I said yes.

Like anyone with a chronic illness I was fed up of being hindered by what was going on inside me. I'd reached the end of my tether. I have a life to live, I have things to prove, things I want to achieve, things I want to enjoy.

Somehow the stars aligned. The timing relative to my support network, couldn't have been better.

Then my consultant realised I needed an new MRI, my previous one was October 2024. This was fast tracked, as I already had a date for my surgery by then, and been through pre-op. This checking, although frustrating, was the right thing to do. Turns out, it's now a more complex surgery and will need to be done robotically.

So the op hasn't happened yet. On that date, I decided to visit a friend who's moved away recently. Distracting myself with the joy of a new town, an old friend, gorgeous autumn weather, and delicious food. Shout out to Beverley, nr Hull (UK).

Still more medical procedures ⚠️

The other part to my current situation is that major surgery has already occurred within my family this year.

At the end of August, my eldest daughter had spinal fusion to correct scoliosis.

Basically, from mid July (see above), my day to day has been either me recovering and managing pain, or being in hospital with my eldest, and her having life-changing surgery. Then afterwards, helping her recover, manage pain, and mobility.

It's been wild. We knew she would have the surgery this year. But it was supposed to be before the summer, so she'd have the summer holidays to recover and not miss too much school. I'd accounted for that in my book plans, but once her op was moved (twice) my plans began to unravel. Then my own health stuff increased the unravel rate.

End of medical content 🫂

The thing about self publishing, I can just stop or pause, change my plan. Which is brilliant. But the other side of the coin is, I'm doing everything myself.

It's not just the writing of the story. It's the marketing, the decision making, the uploading to sales platforms, the file management, the sourcing and negotiating with freelancers, the learning and implementation of something new to me like Kickstarter. I could go on.

It's both exhilarating and exhausting, and incredibly difficult when I'm not at full capacity health-wise. My energy must go toward healing.

It's scary to push this book back again. It goes against my plans.

But, looking at this through a wider lens:

• The market is unsettled, especially in the US (thanks DT)

• Kickstarter staff are currently striking. Details.

So, really, timing isn't the best.

I'm working hard behind the scenes. I'm making it so everything is ready and I can just press the metaphorical LAUNCH button. This is likely to be in 2026 now as I don't have the energy or bandwidth to compete with Christmas.

Thanks for reading.

This post needs a photo so;

TL;DR: My Kickstarter is delayed.

• Slow Horses - absolutely the best thing I've seen since Severance and S1 of The Last Of Us. Well worth an Apple TV trial.

• The Historian - yes I'm still doing my Read-Along. I'm just shy of halfway and relishing the slowness of this reread.

• When I have managed to get out and about I've made an effort to bring my Kindle. Now I can catch up with all the ebooks I've got on there. Currently reading - Dear Laura by Gemma Amor.

• Wednesday S2 - Netflix.

• Shifty on BBC iPlayer - this is a MUST WATCH for anyone. Especially if you're in the UK. It's a documentary series by Adam Curtis. If you're familiar with Video Essays, this is very much that. It's archive footage spliced together from the last 40 years. I honestly think this has made my dreamscape even weirder than usual.

• Another rewatch of Labyrinth - a definite comfort film for me.

• And finally, I have to admit I have been watching AJLT. I'm definitely in the, “it got cancelled just as it was getting good” camp *sigh*

Here's something fun I made for an Instagram trend 👇🏼

How many do you know??

I hope this missive finds you safe. It's time for a behind the scenes life update which I intend to keep short, hence the bullet points.

• I've been unwell. What I should say, partly to myself because I don't like to admit it, is that I am chronically unwell. Over the past week or so I've had a huge flare and an A+E visit. This has led to lots of life admin and chasing doctors and appointments while trying to manage pain. This has meant cancelling plans with friends and plans for summer.

• The life/hospital admin doesn't end with me either. My two daughters are both under the care of two hospitals different to my hospital, so we have a hospital each. We've had a flurry of information and appointments for both of theirs too. Keeping up with all this is a job in itself.

• Apologies if this all sounds like first world problems and privileged BS. I know it does, but I also know that readers are waiting for me. Although I don't owe anyone an explanation, I do think sharing the reality of our lives can help others.

• My next book, The Dark Beneath Us, is close to completion. I just need some time (pain free please) to make final edits. It's had its read through and consensus is it's good to go, but I must make a couple of adjustments in order to be happy enough to let it loose on the world.

• It looks like I should take my time though, because there's so much in flux right now in terms of what Trump is doing with imports into the U.S. As many of my readers are in America I've got to pay attention to any new laws or taxes, even on small ticket items which seem likely to effect me when I run my Kickstarter.

So, to conclude, providing I'm well enough to complete the work on my book, and I can figure out how new import rules effect me, the Kickstarter will run in September.

Stay tuned!

Today, my English teacher resurrected herself through my voice. I was telling someone how I used to get told off because my writing style was too conversational.

It was today, moments before my teacher arrived, that I saw for the first time, the difference in my words, depending on where there are going.

Before you say it- yes, of course they are different, they serve a different purpose. This is true, but what I’m getting at is style, which can be different too depending on circumstances and platform.

Let me explain;

Here, in my newsletter and on socials, when I’m there, is my most authentic voice. It’s second only to having a conversation with me in real life.

In my short fiction, my style is stranger, perhaps more mystical, spare and bold. I can get away with stuff that is harder to sustain in longer forms.

In my longer fiction, I’m adhering to Style Guides and editing tools. I want to feel like a “real novel writer”. Does that mean I need to conform to these (let’s be honest - patriarchal) standards?

It boils down to understanding. Who is reading my work, and are they able to understand it?

At the moment, this reveal is still quite fresh and raw, like a grazed knee in a playground. I’m still workshopping my thoughts around this discovery and what it means.

But I have questions…

Am I masking my writing style in order to fit into the establishment? (school/publishing, any other hierarchical system)

Should I write for people who I don’t have to explain myself to? And ignore those to whom I feel I must justify my stylistic choices? 1

How much of writing is compromise?

As some of you might know, I'm very casually re-reading one of my favourite books of all time, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

It's the twenty year anniversary of it being published and I've felt called back to it recently. I think it's because my brain needs a rest and an escape. The Historian truly does both for me.

What I didn't consider when I decided I'd revisit this book is that now I'm someone who writes fiction. The previous times I read it, I wasn't an author.

Once that side of my brain became something that I could actually forge a career with, reading fiction was never the same again. I read with an author's brain now, looking for technique, sentence structure and sentence length (this is quite a thing for me) and typos or errors stand out to me much more than in my pre-author days.

To be honest, I sometimes wish I could still read a book on this way.

Despite this, The Historian is still able to give my brain a spa treatment, like a massage I don't want to end.

I may do another post on this, as I've flagged up some interesting techniques Kostova uses to immerse the reader.

Until next time 👋🏻

Wow, that list could have been a lot longer.

How does one pick the worst things from the plethora of “current events” we are collectively dealing with, some of us in a more personal way than others.

I don't know the answer and I don't think we should be measuring it. I'm not going to discuss any of the list above, I wanted to set the tone and wanted to encourage you to consider it too. The tone. Your tone.

The battle for headlines and attention is ongoing and increasing. Check your sources. Cross reference your information. Use your discernment.

I've written dystopian worlds, but it's never been something I've wished for. These are the painful, heinous last grabs of dying regimes.

My way through this is to push on and keep creating. Even when it feels pointless. Especially then.

Writing through these horrors is my way of dealing with these horrors. I'm hugely empathetic and take on others feelings and emotions easily. Learning to process them, channelling if you like, through writing has kept my head above water. It's why, when people meet me they are amazed how someone so jolly and smiley can write such dark stories. “Oh, but you seem so nice!” is something I've had a lot.

It's because I'm always processing, always composting. I hope my stories somehow help others process their own horrors, or allow someone to feel those feelings that they once locked away to stay safe. Perhaps their story is too much to remember fully, but my fiction helps them access it bit by bit. Then deal with it, chunk by chunk in a safe way, through the pages of a book.
