No Because URSA Actually Did That 👀

This year has been a major step forward for URSA, especially with the expansion of our presence across campuses, including a strong launch UTSC while deepening our impact at UTSG. Our community grew both in scale and in engagement, with more students than ever participating in research-focused events, content, and conversations. We strengthened our foundation by growing our UTSG team to 40 dedicated members and launching our official website, creating a central hub for opportunities and resources. Our online presence surged past 6,000 followers, reflecting a rapidly expanding network of undergraduate researchers. Across the year, we welcomed approximately 1,000 attendees to over 11 events spanning conferences, seminars, mentorship programs, lab tours, and more.

At UTSC, we hosted a wide range of events throughout the year from our first Research Case Competition, numerous research mentorship events and panels, as well as our first Tri-Campus Undergraduate Research Conference in February, which brought together nearly 300 attendees from all three chapters. Alongside these larger events, we continued to run smaller, more interactive initiatives, including bioinformatics workshops, and networking events, to make research feel more accessible and approachable. With exciting new events, initiatives, and opportunities already in the works, we can’t wait to continue expanding the research community at U of T and make next year even more impactful.

We will be hiring for 2026-2027 in May and June so, keep a look out on our Instagram page: @uoftursa

Ultra-Processed Foods and Mental Health in Children 🍟

In a large Canadian cohort study led by U of T’s own Dr. Miliku in the Department of Nutritional Sciences explored whether ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) (e.g., packaged snacks, sugary drinks, and ready-to-eat meals) are linked to early childhood behavioural development.

By analyzing data from over 2,000 children in the CHILD Cohort Study, the researchers found that by age three, nearly half of children’s daily energy intake came from UPFs. By age five, children with higher UPF consumption showed more behavioural and emotional difficulties, including increased anxiety, withdrawal, hyperactivity, and aggression. These associations persisted even after accounting for factors such as family background, maternal diet, and early-life exposures.

After modelling what would happen if some of those ultraprocessed calories were replaced with minimally processed foods (e.g., fruits, vegetables, and whole foods), the team found that a shift of just 10% of daily energy intake was associated with improved behavioural outcomes across all measures. These findings suggest that everyday dietary choices during the preschool years may play a subtle but meaningful role in shaping children’s emotional and behavioural development.

Is AI now more creative than humans? 🧠💡

With the increasing capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), a U of T and University of Montreal collaborative study tackles this question by comparing the creativity of leading large language models with a dataset of 100,000 human participants. To measure creativity, researchers used a task designed to capture divergent thinking (the ability to connect general ideas in unexpected ways). Several AI models performed as well as, or even better than, the average human participant. Some models generated highly diverse word associations and produced imaginative short texts, including haikus and flash fiction.

When researchers looked at the top quartile of creative humans, people consistently outperformed every AI system tested. Therefore, while AI can match everyday creativity, the most inventive human thinking still stands apart. The study also revealed that small changes in prompting strategies or model settings significantly increased creative output, suggesting that creativity in AI can be “tuned” rather than emerging naturally. These findings support the idea that AI may serve as a complementary tool and brainstorming partner, helping expand idea generation while humans provide depth, meaning, and originality.

Multiple Sclerosis Progression Biomarker Discovery 🧪🔬

Recently published in Nature Immunology, a groundbreaking study led by faculty from the University of Toronto’s Department of Immunology and the University Health Network offers new hope for treating Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Professors Jennifer Gommerman and Valeria Ramaglia have uncovered a specific molecular “circuit” that drives progressive brain damage, providing a potential target for therapies where current treatments often fall short.

The team discovered that aggregates of immune cells, tertiary lymphoid tissues (TLTs), form in the brain’s protective lining. These structures, which are rich in B cells, act as local “hubs” that fuel inflammation and damage the underlying brain tissue. Using mouse models and human patient samples, the researchers found that blocking BTK proteins can dismantle these toxic aggregates. Specifically, BTK inhibitors reduce a signal (CXCL13) that recruits B cells while restoring levels of BAFF, which helps protect neurons. This shift effectively stops the inflammatory process and preserves brain volume. Furthermore, the study identifies the CXCL13:BAFF ratio in cerebrospinal fluid as a powerful new biomarker. This discovery could allow clinicians to identify and monitor hidden brain inflammation in living patients through a simple fluid test, paving the way for more personalized and effective MS treatments.

Boosting immune cells to combat cancer using CRISPR engineering and large-scale in vivo testing 🔬🧪

Amidst ongoing cancer research, researchers are finding new ways to make cancer-fighting immune therapies stronger and longer-lasting. Two teams, led by Datlinger and Knudsen, have developed a large-scale method to test how gene editing can improve chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells (immune cells engineered to recognize and destroy cancer). While CAR T-cell therapy has already transformed treatment for some blood cancers, many patients still see limited responses because the modified cells don’t survive long enough or lose their strength over time.

Using CRISPR gene-editing technology, the researchers systematically “switched off” dozens of genes in CAR T cells and tested their performance in mice with cancer. Datlinger’s team found that removing certain genes, including RHOG, FAS, and PRDM1, enhanced CAR T-cell persistence and tumour-killing ability. Knudsen’s team discovered that turning off CDKN1B (a gene that normally slows cell division) boosted CAR T-cell growth and activity against multiple myeloma.

These findings mark one of the first large-scale in vivo (in living organisms) tests of gene-edited CAR T cells. The approach could guide the next generation of more durable and effective cancer immunotherapies, with potential extensions to other engineered immune cells such as natural killer cells and macrophages.

No Because URSA Actually Did That 👀

This past year has marked an incredible period of growth and impact for URSA. Our community expanded significantly, with nearly 1,000 new members joining us on social media and a 70% overall growth in our digital presence. We launched our very first newsletter, reaching over 2,000 readers across the University of Toronto, and hosted a wide range of flagship events from the “How to Get Into Undergraduate Research” Conference to our Biotech and Cancer Conference, which welcomed nearly 500 attendees. We facilitated year-round coffee chats with professors, hosted bioinformatics workshops and case competitions, and launched more episodes through A Moment of Science, Please! — our student-centered podcast designed to demystify the research journey. This year also saw the successful launch of our Summer Mentorship Program (Graduate to Undergraduate), providing students with the guidance, tools, and connections needed to confidently step into the world of research.

URSA has truly evolved into a central hub for research resources, mentorship, and opportunities at the University of Toronto. With a passionate team of over 15 members this year, we’ve worked hard to build a more accessible and inclusive research landscape for students of all disciplines and years. What began as a small initiative 3 years ago has now become a thriving, student-led community. With exciting new events, initiatives, and opportunities already in the works, we can’t wait to continue expanding the research community at U of T and make next year our most impactful yet.

Wake up bestie, a new URSA branch just dropped

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of URSA UTSC. This opens more the doors to exciting tri-campus collaborations, expanded research resources, and an even stronger, more connected community across U of T.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the world’s leading cause of death, and its burden is rising rapidly across Asia. In a groundbreaking study led by researchers in Singapore, scientists investigated over 800 metabolites in more than 8,000 Asian adults to understand what drives early signs of heart disease. They discovered a cholesterol byproduct called 3BH5C that was strongly linked to a lower risk of heart disease. Crucially, they identified a protein, ferredoxin-1 (FDX1), as a key regulator of 3BH5C. Using genetic analysis and lab experiments, they showed that FDX1 influences how cholesterol is processed and removed from cells. When FDX1 was absent or reduced, cholesterol removal slowed down, raising the risk of buildup in blood vessels. Conversely, boosting FDX1 increased the protective cholesterol metabolite.

What makes this discovery especially meaningful for AAPI Month is its focus on Asian populations, who are underrepresented in genetic research. The protective effect of 3BH5C was found to be 5–6 times stronger in Asians compared to Europeans, highlighting a powerful ancestry-specific mechanism behind heart disease risk. This study not only sheds light on why cardiovascular disease affects Asian communities more severely, but also opens doors to ethnicity-informed treatments and prevention strategies. As we celebrate AAPI Month, this research reminds us of the importance of inclusive science, and the life-saving discoveries that happen when diverse populations are studied and represented.

This World Cancer Day (Feb 4), we highlight a groundbreaking study using explainable AI (xAI) and real-world patient data to improve cancer prognosis. Keyl et al. analyzed data from 15,726 patients across 38 cancer types, integrating clinical records, imaging, and tumour profiles to create AI-derived (AID) markers. Their xAI model identified 114 key markers influencing prognosis and uncovered 1,373 interactions between them, offering insights beyond traditional methods. The model outperformed common prognostic scores (UICC Staging, ECOG PS, Charlson Comorbidity Index) and a simplified Cox model with only ten selected variables.

Using layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP), the model assessed how each clinical variable contributes to risk. Higher CRP levels were linked to worse outcomes, especially with low platelet counts, while high fT3, PD-L1 TPS, and muscle volume were favourable markers. This study highlights how xAI can revolutionize personalized cancer care, helping doctors make better treatment decisions. On this World Cancer Day, we recognize AI’s potential to improve patient outcomes and transform cancer care.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss, cognitive decline, and behavioral changes. Central to Alzheimer's pathology is the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau protein tangles in the brain. The amyloid hypothesis suggests that the aggregation of Aβ peptides disrupts neuronal function, leading to cell death. Additionally, tau protein abnormalities result in neurofibrillary tangles, further contributing to neuronal dysfunction. Recent studies have also highlighted the role of neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and calcium homeostasis in disease progression. For instance, disruptions in calcium ion balance have been linked to Aβ disorders, suggesting that modulating calcium levels could offer therapeutic benefits. Ongoing Alzheimer's research continues to unravel the complex mechanisms underlying the disease, leading to significant scientific impacts. Advancements in understanding pathophysiology, the development of diagnostic biomarkers, and the emergence of novel therapeutic strategies offer hope for more effective management and potential future treatments for Alzheimer's disease.

Have a question you've been eager to ask? Share it with us, and the URSA team will provide you with expert tips and insider advice!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hello! My name is Aqsa, and I’m currently a bioinformatician in the Clinical Genome Interpretation team at the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research. I received an Honours Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto Mississauga (double major in Biology and Physics). I went on to receive my Master of Science (Cell and Systems Biology) at the University of Toronto St. George in Dr. Alan Moses' lab, where I attempted to predict the function of non-coding sequences of DNA using machine learning. I’m passionate about scientific outreach, and currently volunteer as an organizer for TorBUG, a bioinformatics community group which hosts bioinformatics speakers monthly in downtown Toronto. In my free time, I love to make digital art (mostly DBZ fanart!), paint, swim, ice skate, cafe hop, and build really tall card towers.

2. What inspired you to pursue a career in bioinformatics and computational biology, and how did you get started in this field?

It wasn’t an initially pursued interest but a series of research projects from which I learned what I liked and didn’t like that brought me to computational biology. In grade 12, I had a teacher who saw my science potential (at the time I hated science) and convinced me to compete in the Sanofi Biogenius Canada competition, where high school students could pursue real-world research. After that opportunity, I really wanted to be a wet-lab researcher.

I pursued a few more research projects in university through the Research Opportunity Program (ROP) at UofT: a wet-lab biology project studying lab-grown algae (did not like wet-lab biology), then a wet/dry-lab physics project studying the movement of particles in lipid bilayers (did not like wet-lab physics, but I enjoyed coding/modelling), and finally a bioinformatics mathematical modelling project tracking mutation rate in the genome, which I loved. I took ~2 Python courses in university to supplement my experiential learning, which I also fell in love with. From there I connected with Dr. Alan Moses to do more genome research and learn machine learning packages in Python, and off I went into bioinformatics.

3. Bioinformatics and machine learning are growing fields. What skills or experiences do you think are essential for undergraduates to start exploring these areas?

A couple of important skills:

• Bash: At least some exposure to Bash is important. You can get this by doing a research project where you need to ssh (secure shell) into a lab server, or maybe by attending a High Performance Computing (HPC) workshop, or playing on your laptop. Start with simple commands like cp, cd, rm, ls -lt, cat, and awk just to get comfortable with Bash. If you’re a Windows user, you can run Ubuntu on your Windows machine using WSL, which gives you access to the Linux command line and tools like Bash.

• Cell and molecular biology: all the basics of DNA, RNA, protein, promoters, genes, and more are extremely important for bioinformaticians. Depending on what you enjoy, you can also take biochemistry courses or genetics or embryology for all sorts of other omics (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, etc)

• Python: other coding languages are also important, and you can really learn any of them (R, the Javas, the Cs, etc. all have their uses depending on whether you’re analyzing data or developing pipelines; I do not do the latter), but I think Python is easy entry. There’s ample documentation and the code practically reads like English. It has useful modules for data science (pandas, matplotlib, numpy, seaborn, scipy, scikit-learn, statsmodels, tensorflow, keras, pytorch, etc).

4. How does your work in bioinformatics and machine learning contribute to advancing cancer research, and what excites you most about its impact?

I currently work in a translational research institute as a bioinformatician, so I am one step removed from primary research (I’m not publishing papers). Instead, I help apply discoveries (ex. research papers) and developments (ex. software tools) in clinical research. For example, OICR’s clinical reports report somatic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNVs) in tumour samples, but did not previously show whether an SNV had loss of heterozygosity (loss of an allele so it becomes homozygous). I examined the literature and available tools to code our own implementation of LOH, validated it against known data, and now we report LOH for every SNV.

Translational research is exciting because you can see the results and impact quickly. The samples we analyze are real patients, so when a new analysis is added, the next clinical report will have it and the new patient will see it. I love being able to help guide important work done by researchers into the hands of people who can use it to help patients. It beats the frustration I experienced in my masters, like “will anyone ever use this, or will it fade away on biorxiv?” Working in translational research, you can confidently say “researchers and clinicians are excited about this and want to use it, so let’s help them use it.”

5. What resources (e.g., courses, tools, or platforms) would you recommend to undergraduates who want to get hands-on experience in bioinformatics and computational biology?

Nothing beats research experience. A bioinformatician needs to be scientific-minded and able to work independently. That means gaining training as a scientist (ex. by doing a science degree, learning how to form hypotheses, learning how to setup and execute experiments, learning bug-fixing and troubleshooting, learning how to draw conclusions, wrangling data, reading literature, etc). Exposure to real-world messy data is also important; online courses can sometimes fall into the trap of having data that’s too “clean” so the essential skill of data wrangling would be difficult to learn. Doing a thesis project, whether in undergrad or in graduate school, would help with bioinformatics training, especially if it involves the use of publicly available databases like NCBI. I would recommend some kind of research project (such as the ROP program at UofT, or an internship, or a research-based upper-year course) to get the ball rolling. Kaitlin Kharas: A Trailblazer for Graduate Research Advocacy 🗣️

Kaitlin Kharas, a PhD student and leading advocate for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in Canada, has been named one of Nature’s top 10 for 2024—a recognition that highlights her extraordinary impact on the research community. We were fortunate to interview Kaitlin for the URSAxAMOSP podcast, giving us an inside look at her groundbreaking work.

As the driving force behind the Support Our Science (SOS) campaign, Kaitlin spearheaded efforts to secure the largest pay raise in two decades for graduate students and postdocs in Canada, included in the 2024 federal budget. Launched in 2022, SOS galvanized researchers nationwide through rallies, a 10,000-person walkout in 2023, meetings with policymakers, and innovative advocacy strategies. A defining moment was Kaitlin’s direct engagement with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland during a Toronto protest, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change.

The Nature article sheds light on the financial struggles of early-career researchers in Canada, exacerbated by stagnant funding and rising living costs. Kaitlin attributes SOS’s success to its ability to align advocacy efforts with government priorities, focusing on the economic value of research and the diversity within the academic community. Although she completed her PhD in September and won’t personally benefit from these changes, Kaitlin is proud of her role in paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive future for Canadian research.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Month in December is a time to educate, support, and take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS. There is still no cure for HIV-1, and the current standard treatment, antiretroviral therapy (ART), helps control the virus by preventing it from spreading, but it doesn't completely eliminate it. The virus remains hidden in certain cells, forming reservoirs that cause the virus to quickly return if treatment is stopped. This makes it crucial to find new treatments.

Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) are being studied as a potential treatment for HIV-1 because they can both neutralize the virus and trigger immune responses. Joana Dias and colleagues tested bNAbs in monkeys infected with a form of HIV (SHIV). They compared regular bNAbs with a modified version (DEL bNAbs), which is designed to improve immune system responses. While both types delayed the appearance of the virus, the modified bNAbs were cleared from the blood faster, and the monkeys treated with them had stronger immune responses. The findings suggest that bNAbs, especially those with enhanced immune system interactions, may help shape immune responses and could be considered in future HIV treatment strategies.

Indigenous women in Canada face numerous health and social challenges, including domestic violence. They are six times more likely to be killed and 2.5 times more likely to be victims of violence compared to non-Indigenous women. This high level of violence is linked to the lasting effects of colonization and forced assimilation, which have caused intergenerational trauma, discrimination, poverty, and social exclusion in Indigenous communities.

Many Indigenous women live in remote areas with limited access to support services, which are typically located in larger cities and designed for the mainstream population. These programs often lack cultural understanding and fail to provide the safety and relevance Indigenous women need. Indigenous culture, deeply connected to the natural world and spirituality, requires services that honour their cultural identity. The concept of "cultural safety" involves creating environments where Indigenous people feel respected, understood, and safe in every way. It is crucial to advocate for domestic violence programs that respect and understand Indigenous cultural identities, providing the care and safety these women deserve.

🪶 Read the full article by Donna Klingspohn for more information about domestic violence services that are culturally safe and effective for Indigenous women in Canada.

Movember is an annual campaign held every November to raise awareness for men's health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. By growing a mustache or participating in events, people worldwide help spark conversations and fund vital research. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and caused over 30,000 deaths in the U.S. in 2022. It's estimated that 15% of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Most prostate cancers rely on the androgen receptor (AR) to grow, and even small amounts of androgens (male hormones) can fuel tumour growth.

Current treatments aim to block androgen signalling entirely. However, surprisingly, high doses of androgens have also been effective in treating advanced prostate cancer. Rachid Safi and colleagues found that low levels of androgens activate the mTOR signalling pathway, which promotes cancer cell growth. On the other hand, high doses of androgens cause AR to form complexes that reduce the activity of a cancer-related gene called c-MYC, slowing cell growth and encouraging the cells to behave more like normal, healthy cells. These findings suggest that current methods of blocking AR may have limitations and provide new insights into developing better treatments for prostate cancer and other conditions involving androgen hormones in the future.

Bonus Tips & Resources 📑

Here are some additional tips and points to keep in mind when applying to research:

• Explore the Lab’s Website: If the lab has an online presence, take the time to explore it. Reference specific research areas in your cover letter to show genuine interest. Demonstrating knowledge of multiple aspects of their work can make you stand out.

• Connect Your Journey: In both your cover letter and interview, always address “Why this lab, and why you?” Even when discussing your goals or past experiences, find ways to explain how their research aligns with your personal and academic growth.

Here’s a resource guide compiled by URSA x HOSA for last year’s Research Opportunities Symposium, packed with valuable materials to help you when applying for research opportunities.

Have a question you've been eager to ask? Share it with us, and the URSA team will provide you with expert tips and insider advice!

1. Tell me about yourself.

Hello! My name is Naima Bhutta and I’m a fourth year student specializing in Molecular Biology and minoring in Chemistry. I volunteered in Dr. Katharina Braeutigam’s plant epigenetics and stress biology lab in the summer of my first year and I returned as an ROP student the following summer. In the summer of my third year, I did a BIO481 in Dr. David McMillen’s synthetic biology lab. In my free time, I like to paint and go canoeing.

2. Tell me about your publication. How were you able to be published and what steps did you take?

My publication is titled “Seed Collection in Temperate Trees—Clean, Fast, and Effective Extraction of Populus Seeds for Laboratory Use and Long-term Storage.” I had the incredible opportunity to work on this project under the guidance of Dr. Braeutigam.

Publishing as an undergraduate involves several factors, and each journey can be quite different. I want to be clear that there is no simple formula that can guarantee a publication, and that the following is a very specific case.

I feel like the biggest factor that played a role was that I showed dedication and genuine interest in what I was doing and I had experience in the specific technique that the paper was about. I started as a volunteer in the lab and I strived to do the best in every aspect of my work. During this time I gained lots of experience with the new Poplar seed collection technique. When I transitioned to an ROP student, I continued to assist with seed collection while also focusing on my ROP project. Although the seed collection was challenging at times, I recognized its significance, as these seeds were essential for future experiments, so I put in a lot of effort and ensured the seed collection was done properly. Midway through my ROP, Dr. Braeutigam decided that she wanted to publish a paper that showcased the new seed collection method. Dr. Braeutigam spent years refining the seed collecting technique and needed someone to validate its effectiveness with data. Because of my experience with the method, Dr. Braeutigam invited me to collect data and conduct analyses to demonstrate how this technique outperformed the traditional method.

To reiterate, while several factors can enhance the likelihood of publication, it’s important to approach research with the understanding that publication is not guaranteed. Nonetheless, opportunities like ROP, BIO481, and work study positions can significantly enhance your resume and open doors for future endeavors.

3. Tell me about your internship at Sunnybrook. How did you land this opportunity and approached making your application? Do you think lots of research experience is required for similar experiences?

I am interning at the Cancer Genetics and High Risk Program at Sunnybrook, where I collaborate with a team of genetic counselors. My responsibilities focus on streamlining the patient experience by gathering family histories and creating detailed pedigrees. This helps expedite patient appointments with genetic counselors. I also have the opportunity to shadow genetic counseling sessions.

I got this opportunity through the BIO400 internship course, which offers a range of placements, including research positions at hospitals like SickKids and UHN. It required a personal statement, a reference, a resume, and a placement ranking form. From there, about 30 students are selected for interviews, with 10 to 15 receiving placement offers.

In my view, the most important part of the application is the personal statement and the interview. In both of these application components, the course instructors really want to understand your motivation for wanting a specific placement. In my case, I had recently discovered the field of genetic counseling, so I emphasized my desire to deepen my understanding of the profession.

If you are looking more for a research oriented placement, I do think having some prior research experience would be beneficial because research labs are different from course wet labs. However, even if you don’t have much research experience, you can still apply to research internships and highlight the lab skills that you’ve gained through your lab courses. In either case, ensure that you tie your research experiences or lab skills to the specific work that is done in the lab and emphasize why you are a good fit for the lab and why the lab is a good fit for you.

4. What would you recommend to people who are interested in getting a publication or internship?

Securing a publication is dependent on a variety of external factors, so it’s hard to give concrete steps or advice for success. However, I do think that one of the most important aspects is to show genuine dedication and interest in your work.

For those interested in internships, I highly recommend applying for BIO400 or any other internship courses in other departments (i.e. CPS400, PSY442, SOC480, ECO400, etc). If you’re considering external internships, creating a strong cover letter is essential. Make sure to clearly connect your experiences - such as relevant coursework, lab skills, or prior research - to the specific lab you’re applying to. Highlight how your background aligns with their work and how the lab can contribute to your professional goals.

5. What's one piece of advice you want people to implement straight away?

Be persistent and don’t be afraid to talk to professors! It was really daunting going to Dr. Braeutigam’s office at the end of my first year to ask her about volunteering opportunities, but if I hadn’t done that then I wouldn’t have had the experiences that I’ve had. Also, don’t be afraid to follow up with professors either. They are quite busy, but if they see a student with genuine interest in their work then they will be more likely to respond.

In honour of ADHD Awareness Month, URSA is shedding light on ADHD research and ongoing innovations in ADHD diagnosis and treatment. ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is a common neurological condition that typically involves trouble focusing, the tendency for disorganization, and impulsive actions. Developing treatment biomarkers for psychiatric disorders, like ADHD, has been difficult, especially because ADHD symptoms vary widely between individuals. Although promising findings rarely make it into real-world treatment decisions, a solid base of research in areas like brain imaging, electroencephalogram (EEG), and genetics offers hope for future breakthroughs.

Giorgia Michelini and colleagues reviewed potential biomarkers that could improve personalized ADHD treatments. Certain pre-treatment profiles, especially those identified through low-cost and non-invasive EEG tests, could help predict how well different medications or therapies will work for each person. The study shows that various treatments lead to distinct changes in the brain, which could help track treatment success and guide the development of new therapies.

The authors emphasize the need for more inclusive research and improved methods to make these potential biomarkers useful in everyday treatment for a wider range of ADHD patients. By increasing awareness, we can reduce stigma, foster understanding, and promote research that helps improve the lives of individuals with ADHD.

In honour of ADHD Awareness Month, URSA is shedding light on ADHD research and ongoing innovations in ADHD diagnosis and treatment. ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is a common neurological condition that typically involves trouble focusing, a tendency for disorganization, and impulsive actions, however, symptoms can vary by individual. While it is usually diagnosed through formal methods, recent research suggests that ADHD symptoms may exist on a spectrum that affects people to different degrees. ADHD symptoms in children are thought to stem from disruptions in brain development, however, studies on whether certain brain tests can reliably predict ADHD have shown mixed results.

Alexander Weigard and colleagues used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, which followed over 10,000 kids aged 9-10 across the U.S., to create machine learning models that predict ADHD symptoms. They looked at factors like cognitive skills, family characteristics, and demographics to predict ADHD symptoms as reported by parents and teachers over 1 and 2 years. They found that factors such as cognitive skills, impulsivity, gender, parental supervision, and screen time all played a role in predicting ADHD symptoms. The results showed that the model can be useful for predicting ADHD symptoms in new data and various contexts. By increasing awareness, we can reduce stigma, foster understanding, and promote research that helps improve the lives of individuals with ADHD.
