ENGL 352g: Bookpacking Paris & London

The Age of Revolutions Explored through Classic Historical Fiction

‘Bookpacking’ classes at USC are immersive experiences in which students read classic and contemporary novels on location. They combine cultural exploration with literary adventure. In the Summer of 2027, we are offering a Bookpacking class with a historical twist. In this class, students will spend a month in London and Paris ‘bookpacking’ two classic historical novels - ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ by Charles Dickens, and ‘Les Misérables’ by Victor Hugo. We will seek out the locations of these epic stories, tracing their trajectories - to the guillotine, to the barricades - and we’ll discover how much these tales of Revolution still resonate in our own fractured age. This is a class about place, people and politics at the intersection of past and present. If you have a passion for literature, for history and for contemporary political thought, this class is for you. This is a GE-B class. It is co-sponsored by the Department of English and the Department of History, and meets major requirements for English, Narrative Studies and History. It is open to all.

The class will count for GE-B and for HIST credit (Europe/post 1800)

Want to learn about Gender in the 17th & 18th Centuries? Want to travel to London for free? Check this class out. *Link Fixed!

Every year the history department offers a travel course for our majors (HIST, LHC, CLLAS) that meets once a week for an hour and 20 mins during the spring semester and then travels for a week after graduation (seniors can apply). The travel, lodging, and costs tied to the course are all covered by the department through our Foulke Fund.

This year I am offering HIST 395: Sex & the City: Constructing Gender in London, 1700-1900. The course description reads: “Ideas about sex and gender were changing in England as the eighteenth century folded into the nineteenth. As medical ideas altered, as the notion of the individual became cemented, and as a consumer culture grew, the way people thought about gender changed. This period saw the creation of separate spheres for men and women and this transformed expectations for each gender and thus influenced people’s family lives, work experiences, and sense of self. This class looks at how ideas about gender were refracted through objects and spaces, not only because societies imprint their gender expectations on objects, but because during this period things had come to matter more to the British. We will examine changing gender roles and expectations as revealed in class specific fashions in clothing and in design. We will explore the ways place mattered by looking at how the home and institutions such as brothels, public schools, and department stores presented a blueprint for gender ideals and realities. We will also look at how these ideas were reinforced through law, which both policed sexual mores and protected the established gender hierarchy. In London, we will go to museums that show what people wore and how they utilized space, both in private and in public. We will frequent the restaurants that bachelors did and have high tea, the purview of the female sex. We will also visit the houses, palaces, streets, and stores that the men and women of the period wandered among.” We will be traveling from May 17-26.

You must apply to register for the course. Seniors can apply. For more information contact Prof. O’Neill at ljoneill@usc.edu. To apply use this link: https://forms.gle/qwAMk98WmVQoprug7 . Applications are due on Monday, October 12, by midnight.

We highly recommend submitting ASAP since papers will be reviewed and accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Want to learn about Gender in the 17th & 18th Centuries? Want to travel to London for free? Check this class out.

USC in DC Spring Program, Applications Open!

CLHC Panel: Professors are the Enemy - Oct 1st

The Center for Law, History and Culture, with support from the USC History Department and the Max Kade Institute for Austrian-German-Swiss Studies at USC, is pleased to be hosting a special event: Professors Are the Enemy, a discussion of the long history - and disturbing present - of the demonization of professors. Our program will commence with a short talk by the distinguished intellectual historian Martin Jay (Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor History Emeritus, UC Berkeley), which will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by David Myers (Distinguished Professor and Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair, UCLA), with discussants Kent Puckett (Ida May and William J. Eggers Jr. Chair of English, UC Berkeley), Ben Carrington (Associate Professor of Journalism and Sociology, USC Annenberg), and Nomi Stolzenberg (Nathan and Lilly Shapell Chair in Law, USC Gould.)

This is an opportunity to come together to learn about where the contemporary attacks on the university are coming from and to share concerns and insights about the present (and past) predicament of higher education in the U.S., the U.K., and Europe.

We hope that you will join us and encourage your colleagues and students to come as well. Please note that this event will start promptly at 12 PM and continue until 1:30 PM. Lunch will be served at 11:50.

ENGL-373g “Telling America’s Story” is a month-long immersive Maymester class to be held on location in Washington, DC in May / June 2027. Because the class is so directly focused on issues of American history and historiography and the place of government, we’re offering this class for history majors/minors (upper division, Americas, post 1800) and for Law, History and Culture majors (Core Competency 3). You can find out more about this new Maymester here - . https://www.bookpackers.com/washington-dc

Cool Summer Course Taught on Catalina!

HIST 499: Atlas Catalinae: Critical Map-Making on Catalina Island, Prof. Flores Villalobos

Earn four units of credit in just four weeks at the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island! All courses and activities take place in our unique, interdisciplinary residential college on the island. History students might be especially interested in “HIST 499: Atlas Catalinae: Critical Map-Making on Catalina Island.”

This course offers an introduction to map-making, critical cartography, and the politics and history of maps through hands-on workshops and assignments. Students will spend time exploring the island and learning digital mapping tools to ultimately create their own collaborative atlas of Catalina Island. Throughout, they will consider how maps have functioned to create boundaries, consolidate power, and surveil populations, but also to contest dispossession, account for violence, and imagine alternative landscapes.

During this Julymester, you will live and study on USC’s Catalina Island campus, which has dorms, a dining hall, classrooms, beach access, and a ton of recreational activities such as snorkeling and hiking in a beautiful setting. These classes take place from Monday, July 13 to Friday, August 7. Julymester classes are 4 units and are part of the fall registration/tuition load. Students take only 1 Julymester class due to the intensive format. There is a cost of $2,398 for room and board, but we have several forms of financial support available that can bring this cost down to $0. Undergraduates from all majors are welcome—no prerequisites required. You can read more about these questions in this FAQ.

There is a virtual information session on Wednesday, March 4 from 2-3pm, registered here. The priority application deadline is April 12.

Please contact Prof. Flores (floresv@usc.edu) directly or Hannah Maryanski Kiszla with questions at maryansk@usc.edu. Follow us on instagram @USCWrigley for lots of Julymester content!

HIST Courses for Fall

First off apologies for the schedule not being up to date. We basically have new staff everywhere and a lot of places are short staffed so things are falling through the cracks and taking forever to change. Below is what I believe is the slate of classes we will be offering in the Fall. HIST 216, 211, and 458 are waiting on approval of the new course or the instructor. HIST 386 and 377 should surface soon. Also HIST 354 and 427 were listed at the wrong times so we had to change them. I’m happy to answer questions on any of this. Also the titles are my shorthand titles so they will be a bit different on the schedule. - Prof. O’Neill

Want to write an Honors Thesis Next Year?

If you are a junior it is time to start thinking about applying for the Honors Program. This program has you take HIST 492 (History majors) or HIST 493 (LHC majors both in the Fall and Spring of your senior year to help you produce an independent work of scholarship. The applications consists of the application sheet (see below), a 1-2 page proposal that lays out your project, an email from your advisor agree to work with you, and your STARS report. You can turn this in any time between now and April 11th. Professor O’Neill is happy to chat about the process or throw around ideas for projects.

Additionally, here is the recording from Friday’s info session if you’d like to watch. And here are links to two sources of summer funding, the Foulke Travel Grant and the USC Provost’s Undergraduate Research Fellowship.

If you would like to join the history honors society, Phi Alpha Theta, applications are open until March 3rd.

PAT is “an academic honor society for colleges and universities whose mission is to promote the study of History through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among Historians.” Membership gives you a line on your resume, a subscription to their magazine, The Historian, and the ability to apply to their awards and attend their conferences. For more see their website: https://phialphatheta.org.

University of Wisconsin Undergraduate Research Journal

The ARCHIVE Undergraduate Journal of History is now accepting submissions for its Spring 2026 edition! ARCHIVE is the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s undergraduate journal dedicated to publishing original historical research. While we are nominally a history journal, we also welcome submissions in history-adjacent fields such as art history, historiography, and classical studies. In particular, please ensure that you submit an anonymized copy of the submission as a Word or Google doc. You can expect to receive a decision from us in early arch.
