Some art forms are highly underestimated. For example, the other day my partner invited me to a neighborhood circus, a show that revolved entirely around monocycles. For more than an hour, a half dozen performers mesmerized us with stunning acrobatics they carried out on the humble one-wheeler. They defied physics, danced, and expressed love and humor through an art that’s often the brunt of jokes. As a result, the show gave me a new appreciation for the minoritarian practice of monocycling.

Be it acrobatics, juggling, puppetry, embroidering, playing the melodica, or serving the perfect espresso, if you pay attention, you quickly notice how people lovingly spend time and effort on creations that are brushed aside as minor art forms, or aren’t thought of as art at all. However, when done well, it’s difficult—and unnecessary—to describe these pursuits as anything other than art.

Recently, another underappreciated form of creation that came to my attention is the art of whistling. Because most of us can make sound when we blow air through our lips, this art form is relegated to a mere gimmick. However, trivializing the practice of human warbling is akin to disregarding singing because most of us can speak.

Upon closer consideration, whistling is a deeply profound practice. As with singing, it results in the creation of music without the mediation of tools. That is, the human is the instrument. I would argue that although singing is a well-respected artistic practice, whistling is music in an even purer form. After all, music is an abstract and ephemeral artifact. It may have no explicit meaning, and once one ceases to perform music, unlike a painting, statue, or great novel, it no longer exists. In contrast to singing, which is usually the melodic vocalization of words with meaning that persists, whistling is purely abstract sound, more closely related to the true abstract and ephemeral nature of music we just described. That is, like meditation and thinking, it’s one of humanity’s purest practices, connecting us to our own existence.

In that light, as long as we breathe, we can whistle; as long as we whistle, we can create music; as long as we create music, we can make art; and as long as we make art, we live. In a sense, much like a canary in a coal mine, whistling is a reminder that we’re alive and a warning of the dangers we face.

Algunas formas de arte están muy subestimadas. Por ejemplo, el otro día mi pareja me invitó a un circo de barrio, un espectáculo dedicado íntegramente a los monociclos. Durante más de una hora, media docena de artistas nos mantuvieron cautivados con impresionantes acrobacias realizadas sobre aquel humilde vehículo de una sola rueda. Desafiaron las leyes de la física, bailaron y expresaron amor y humor a través de un arte que suele ser objeto de burlas. Como resultado, el espectáculo me hizo apreciar de una manera nueva la práctica minoritaria del monociclismo.

Ya sea la acrobacia, los malabares, los títeres, el bordado, tocar la melódica o preparar el espresso perfecto, si prestás atención, enseguida advertís cómo las personas dedican tiempo y esfuerzo, con cariño, a creaciones que se descartan como formas artísticas menores o que ni siquiera se consideran arte. Sin embargo, cuando se hacen bien, resulta difícil—e innecesario—describir estas actividades como algo distinto del arte.

Recientemente, otra forma de creación poco valorada que llegó a mi atención es el arte de silbar. Como la mayoría de nosotros podemos producir sonido al expulsar aire por los labios, esta forma de arte queda relegada a un mero truco. Sin embargo, trivializar la práctica del silbido humano equivale a desestimar el canto porque la mayoría de nosotros podemos hablar.

Si nos detenemos a considerarlo, silbar es una práctica profundamente trascendental. Al igual que el canto, permite crear música sin la mediación de herramientas. Es decir, el ser humano es el instrumento. Me atrevería a decir que, aunque el canto es una práctica artística muy respetada, el silbido es una forma de música todavía más pura. Después de todo, la música es un artefacto abstracto y efímero. Puede no tener un significado explícito y, una vez que dejamos de interpretarla, a diferencia de una pintura, una estatua o una gran novela, deja de existir. A diferencia del canto, que suele consistir en la vocalización melódica de palabras cuyo significado perdura, el silbido es sonido puramente abstracto, más cercano a la verdadera naturaleza abstracta y efímera de la música que acabamos de describir. Es decir, al igual que la meditación o el pensar, es una de las prácticas más puras de la humanidad, que nos conecta con nuestra propia existencia.

Desde esa perspectiva, mientras respiremos podremos silbar; mientras silbemos podremos crear música; mientras creemos música podremos hacer arte; y mientras hagamos arte, estaremos vivos. En cierto sentido, al igual que un canario en una mina de carbón, el silbido nos recuerda que estamos vivos y nos advierte de los peligros que enfrentamos.

Today is your birthday!

Until recently, birthday celebrations weren’t my thing. Not other people’s birthdays, those I cared about; it was my own I wasn’t that interested in. It felt immature to make a day about me when I’m one of the lucky ones who can celebrate life any time I want to—I’m becoming such a hippie I don’t recognize myself anymore. There’s also an element of deep-rooted insecurity: what if I organize something and nobody shows up?

That all changed the day I published Good ideas don’t win the popularity contest—I never miss the opportunity to plug one of my unpopular posts. That happened to be on my birthday a bit more than two years ago. I’d decided to do something different that year, and I took the day off from work. You see, it was a Monday, and in my town, the day after was a public holiday, so I made an extra-long weekend out of it. I couldn’t think of a better gift to myself than some rest from sitting in front of a computer for eight hours to work, so I could instead sit eight hours in front of my tablet to write.

I didn’t plan much for the long weekend. Like the old hippie I’m becoming, I just went with the flow. My partner and I treated ourselves to a gig Friday evening. I don’t remember who it was, but I remember we enjoyed it. Saturday, we got dolled up and went for dinner. We had some great cocktails, and the cochinillo de Segovia was superb. The best way to get rid of the heartburn from the night before was to burn some calories with a relaxed bike ride in the mountains Sunday morning. Finally came Monday, my birthday. We’d done enough celebrating, so I took it easy, went to a local café, and wrote a post for you guys.

As I walked back home and enjoyed the marvel that is an autumn afternoon, I realized that I had spontaneously celebrated my birthday all weekend. It was unexpected and unplanned, but it happened. At that moment, I assimilated a lesson my partner had been trying to teach me for years: that our birth deserves recognition. It’s the anniversary of our entrance into this weird thing we call consciousness, a magical occurrence that’s worthy of our attention, observance, and jubilation. I finally got it, and since then, in my own way, I celebrate my birthday.

Welcome to the Weltschmerz

Because every year a public holiday lands the day after my anniversary on this planet, it’s easy to take a couple of days off that week and get out of town. A small escapade away from the city and our day-to-day is something we’ve gotten into the habit of doing for my birthday the last couple of years. This year was no different.

At my age, I’ve learned a few things about myself. What I’ve picked up recently is that one of the things I like to do most in life is eat. Sure, I’m a bit of a coffee snob—the bane of gentrified neighborhoods throughout the planet—but although I love food, I would never consider myself a “foodie.” I avoid high expectations, I’m not a brilliant cook, I often struggle to identify what I’m eating, and I want my junk food to be just that: junk. Nevertheless, food is one of my great pleasures, so this year, my birthday trip was to a culinary destination.

After a week of driving through olive groves and vineyards to go from one town to the other, enjoying one delicious meal after the next, it was time to get back home. Following a quiet week of small-town living, stepping into the big-city airport upon our return was a bit of a shocker. After getting off the plane, for a beat, I stood at the jetway’s threshold to process the stream of people zipping by in different directions, going from one end of the terminal to the other. Where did all these people come from? Where were they going in such a frenzy? Am I one of them?

When I snapped out of it, my partner and I looked at each other, and without saying a thing, we understood that we both wanted to get the hell out of the airport as fast as possible. We were traveling light, so we passed by baggage claim in a heartbeat, walked straight to the exit, and made our way to the metro to get home as soon as we could.

In retrospect, the sea of people at the airport felt like a Zen Buddhist temple compared to the metro. Although our terminal was the first stop and trains arrived empty, getting in felt like the mosh pits of my youth. There was a lot of pushing and shoving, confused travelers with suitcases, mixed social conventions from different cultures that didn’t align, and expletives in foreign languages as everyone rushed to get a seat for the hour-long journey to the city center. Fortunately, nobody understood each other enough to escalate matters.

We found a spot seated next to a ground personnel employee in uniform getting back home after a long shift. In the mood to sleep in our own bed after a week away, we stared in a trance-like state at the signage above our heads, seeing how each station lit up as we rolled from one stop to the next. After a few stops, our ground crew neighbor started scrolling through TikTok shorts without putting on his headphones. Within 15 minutes, I heard a mix of 10-second snippets of auto-tuned pop songs, a recipe for homemade mac ‘n’ cheese, and how to remove ingrown hairs from your back with nothing but chopsticks, a rubber band, and a steady pulse. The usual secondhand social media we’ve grown accustomed to in public spaces.

As we arrived at our transfer stop, with a shared sigh of relief, my partner and I got off the train and made our way to the blue line. Another nine stations and we’re home. It was just 15 minutes until our ride would be over, so it didn’t bother us that we didn’t manage to get a seat for the final leg of our journey. That is, until we got to the city’s central train station and a large group of students who were returning from a day trip got on board. The kids weren’t the problem; their backpacks were. Instead of taking them off and placing them on the ground between their legs in the crowded car, they kept them on. Rather than the train rattling us side to side, it was their rucksacks every time they moved.

At the next station—fortunately, there were only five left—a group of three old ladies on their way to the theater got on. They gingerly stepped onto the train and made their way through the crowd. As I saw their feeble bodies standing among the kids’ menacing backpacks, all I could think was that the ride could end in a pile of broken hips. The passengers who were comfortably seated were all absorbed in whatever garbage they were watching on their phones and didn’t even deign to give the three women a seat. I drew the attention of one of them, a woman in her mid-20s who answered:

“I don’t have to give up my place; the disabled seats are over there,” she said, looking toward the disabled seats that were already taken at the far end of the crowded train.

She then looked down and resumed getting her soul sucked by the device she held in her hand. One of the ladies from the group saw the interaction as she leaned on her cane and gave me a smile of resignation. I could read her lips as she mouthed “It’s OK” to me.

We finally reached our stop and found our way to the surface. During the couple of blocks to our apartment, we both talked about the whole experience. We shared our discouragement with how it’s become common to deny small acts of kindness toward one another. We wondered how we could ever expect the systemic changes that are necessary to address the pressing issues of our time if we can’t make the smallest effort to help and accommodate the people we encounter every day.

Analog influencers

Putting your headset on when you use your phone, minding other people’s personal space rather than banging into them with your backpack, and giving your seat to an old lady on a crowded metro are tiny gestures that are within everyone’s reach. They’re small acts of generosity that, once you get in the habit of doing them, are easy and tremendously rewarding. Furthermore, they’re contagious. Influencers aren’t a new phenomenon; we’ve been doing it for generations when we raise our children.

As I put the key in to open the door of our apartment building, I saw a billboard at the bus stop across the street. A big election is coming up, and it was a public announcement encouraging people to vote. That’s when an idea came to me: maybe we should take advantage of our addiction to influencers to get us back to civility. We could use a campaign, much like the one on the billboard, to get ourselves influencing each other to act in more positive ways. But in real life. We all need to become influencers for the people who are right next to us. We might not get thousands of followers and likes, but we’ll improve the lives of thousands of people.

If we saw other people as agents of empathy and care, our environments would look very different. Our values would change. There’d be a moral shift where we’d see our neighbors as sources of support rather than feared competitors we need to beat.

The problem is that I don’t have the resources to get this going, so I thought I’d reach out to my mayor. After all, of all the politicians out there, mayors are the ones who have the greatest impact on our daily lives because they’re closest to the action. If they can put up billboards to get people to vote, there’s surely something they can do to campaign for civility. But why write only to my mayor? This should go out to every mayor in the world. ¡Hoy es tu cumpleaños!

Hasta hace poco, celebrar mi cumpleaños no era lo mío. No me refiero a los cumpleaños de otras personas, esos me importaban; al que no le daba demasiada importancia era al mío. Me parecía inmaduro dedicar un día a mí mismo cuando soy uno de los afortunados que pueden celebrar la vida cuando quieran—me estoy volviendo tan hippie que ya ni me reconozco. También hay un componente de inseguridad muy arraigada: ¿y si organizo algo y no viene nadie?

Todo eso cambió el día que publiqué Las buenas ideas no ganan el concurso de popularidad—nunca pierdo la oportunidad de promocionar una de mis impopulares publicaciones. Eso fue hace algo más de dos años, justo el día de mi cumpleaños. Ese año había decidido hacer algo diferente y me tomé el día libre en el trabajo. Resulta que era lunes y, en mi ciudad, el día siguiente era feriado, así que me armé un fin de semana extra-largo. No se me ocurría un regalo mejor para mí mismo que descansar un poco de pasar ocho horas frente a una computadora trabajando, para poder pasar, en cambio, ocho horas frente a mi tableta escribiendo.

No había planeado gran cosa para ese fin de semana largo. Como el viejo hippie en el que me estoy convirtiendo, simplemente me dejé llevar por el flow. Mi pareja y yo nos dimos el gusto de ir a un recital el viernes por la noche. No me acuerdo quién tocaba, pero sí recuerdo que lo disfrutamos. El sábado nos arreglamos y salimos a cenar. Tomamos unos cócteles buenísimos y el cochinillo de Segovia estaba espectacular. La mejor manera de sacarme de encima la acidez de la noche anterior era quemar algunas calorías con un paseo tranquilo en bicicleta por la montaña el domingo por la mañana. Finalmente llegó el lunes, mi cumpleaños. Ya habíamos celebrado bastante, así que me lo tomé con calma, fui a un café del barrio y escribí una publicación para ustedes.

Mientras volvía caminando a casa y disfrutaba de la maravilla que es una tarde de otoño, me di cuenta de que había celebrado mi cumpleaños espontáneamente durante todo el fin de semana. No lo había previsto ni planeado, pero había sucedido. En ese momento, asimilé una lección que mi pareja llevaba años intentando enseñarme: que nuestro nacimiento merece ser reconocido. Es el aniversario de nuestra entrada en esta extraña cosa que llamamos conciencia, un acontecimiento mágico que merece nuestra atención, nuestra observancia y nuestra alegría. Por fin lo entendí y, desde entonces, a mi manera, celebro mi cumpleaños.

Bienvenidos al Weltschmerz

Como todos los años hay un feriado justo después del aniversario de mi llegada a este planeta, es fácil tomarse un par de días libres esa semana y salir de la ciudad. En los últimos años, nos hemos acostumbrado a hacer una pequeña escapada para mi cumpleaños, alejándonos de la ciudad y de nuestra rutina cotidiana. Este año no fue diferente.

A mi edad, ya he aprendido algunas cosas sobre mí mismo. Una de las cosas que descubrí hace poco es que una de las actividades que más disfruto en la vida es comer. Es cierto, soy un poco esnob del café —la pesadilla de los barrios gentrificados de todo el planeta—, pero, aunque me encanta la comida, jamás me consideraría un foodie. No me gusta tener expectativas demasiado altas, no soy un cocinero brillante, muchas veces me cuesta identificar lo que estoy comiendo y quiero que mi comida chatarra sea exactamente eso: chatarra. Aun así, la comida es uno de mis grandes placeres, así que este año elegí un destino gastronómico para mi viaje de cumpleaños.

Después de una semana recorriendo en auto olivares y viñedos para ir de un pueblo a otro y disfrutando de una comida deliciosa tras otra, llegó el momento de volver a casa. Después de una semana tranquila, viviendo al ritmo de un pueblo pequeño, entrar al aeropuerto de la gran ciudad al regresar fue un pequeño shock. Después de bajar del avión, me quedé un instante en el umbral de la pasarela de desembarque, intentando procesar el torrente de gente que pasaba a toda velocidad en distintas direcciones, yendo de un extremo al otro de la terminal. ¿De dónde había salido toda esa gente? ¿Adónde iban con tanta desesperación? ¿Yo era uno de ellos?

Cuando salí de ese estado de desconcierto, mi pareja y yo nos miramos y, sin decir una palabra, entendimos que los dos queríamos salir de ese aeropuerto de una vez y lo más rápido posible. Viajábamos con poco equipaje, así que pasamos por la zona de recogida de equipaje en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, fuimos directamente a la salida y nos dirigimos al metro para llegar a casa cuanto antes.

En retrospectiva, el mar de gente del aeropuerto parecía un templo budista zen en comparación con el metro. Aunque nuestra terminal era la primera parada y los trenes llegaban vacíos, subirnos se sintió como si estuviéramos en los pogos de nuestra juventud. Había empujones por todas partes, viajeros desorientados con sus valijas, convenciones sociales de distintas culturas que chocaban entre sí y exclamaciones en idiomas extranjeros mientras todo el mundo se apresuraba a conseguir un asiento para el viaje de una hora hasta el centro de la ciudad. Por suerte, nadie entendía lo suficiente a los demás como para que la situación llegara a mayores.

Encontramos un lugar junto a un empleado de tierra uniformado que volvía a casa después de un turno largo. Con ganas de dormir en nuestra propia cama después de una semana fuera, nos quedamos mirando en un estado casi hipnótico los carteles sobre nuestras cabezas y observando cómo se iluminaba cada estación a medida que avanzábamos de una parada a la siguiente. Después de unas cuantas estaciones, nuestro vecino, el empleado de tierra, empezó a escrolear cortos de TikTok sin ponerse los auriculares. En menos de quince minutos, escuché una mezcla de fragmentos de diez segundos de canciones pop autoteneadas, una receta de macarrones con queso caseros y una explicación sobre cómo quitarse los pelos encarnados de la espalda usando nada más que palillos chinos, una gomita elástica y un pulso firme. El típico contenido de redes sociales de segunda mano al que ya nos hemos acostumbrado en los espacios públicos.

Cuando llegamos a nuestra estación de combinación, mi pareja y yo nos bajamos del tren con un suspiro compartido de alivio y nos dirigimos a la línea azul. Nueve estaciones más y estaríamos en casa. Solo faltaban quince minutos para terminar el viaje, así que no nos molestó no haber conseguido asiento para el último tramo. Eso fue hasta que llegamos a la estación central de trenes de la ciudad y subió un grupo numeroso de estudiantes que volvía de una excursión. Los chicos no eran el problema; lo eran sus mochilas. En lugar de quitárselas y dejarlas en el suelo entre las piernas en aquel vagón abarrotado, se las dejaron puestas. En vez de que el tren nos zarandeara de un lado a otro, eran sus mochilas las que nos sacudían cada vez que se movían.

En la siguiente estación —por suerte, solo quedaban cinco— subió un grupo de tres señoras mayores que iban al teatro. Entraron con cautela y avanzaron entre la multitud. Al ver sus cuerpos frágiles rodeados por las amenazantes mochilas de los chicos, no podía dejar de pensar que el viaje podía terminar con una pila de caderas rotas. Los pasajeros que estaban cómodamente sentados tenían la atención puesta la basura que estuvieran mirando en sus teléfonos y ni siquiera se dignaban a cederles el asiento a las tres mujeres. Llamé la atención de una de las pasajeras, una mujer de unos veinticinco años, que me respondió:

—No tengo por qué ceder mi lugar; los asientos para personas con discapacidad están allá—dijo, señalando los asientos reservados para personas con discapacidad, que ya estaban ocupados en el extremo más alejado del vagón abarrotado.

Después bajó la mirada y volvió a dejar que el dispositivo que tenía en la mano le chupara el alma. Una de las señoras del grupo vio el intercambio mientras se apoyaba en su bastón y me dedicó una sonrisa resignada. Pude leerle los labios cuando me dijo en silencio “No pasa nada”.

Finalmente llegamos a nuestra parada y salimos a la superficie. Durante las dos o tres cuadras que nos separaban de nuestro departamento, hablamos de toda la experiencia. Compartimos nuestra frustración ante el hecho de que se haya vuelto habitual negarnos pequeños gestos de amabilidad entre nosotros. Nos preguntamos cómo podíamos esperar los cambios sistémicos necesarios para abordar los problemas urgentes de nuestro tiempo si no éramos capaces de hacer el mínimo esfuerzo para ayudar y tener consideración con las personas que encontramos todos los días.

Influencers analógicos

Ponerte los auriculares cuando usás el teléfono, respetar el espacio personal de los demás en lugar de golpearlos con tu mochila y cederle el asiento a una señora mayor en un metro abarrotado son pequeños gestos que están al alcance de cualquiera. Son actos de generosidad que, una vez que te acostumbrás a hacerlos, resultan fáciles y tremendamente gratificantes. Además, son contagiosos. Los influencers no son un fenómeno nuevo; llevamos generaciones haciéndolo cuando criamos a nuestros hijos.

Mientras metía la llave para abrir la puerta de nuestro edificio, vi una valla publicitaria en la parada del colectivo de enfrente. Se acercaban unas elecciones importantes y el cartel era un anuncio público que animaba a la gente a votar. Fue entonces cuando se me ocurrió una idea: quizá podríamos aprovechar nuestra adicción a los influencers para recuperar la convivencia. Podríamos lanzar una campaña, muy parecida a la del cartel, para animarnos a influir unos en otros y actuar de manera más positiva. Pero en la vida real. Todos tenemos que convertirnos en influencers para las personas que tenemos justo al lado. Tal vez no consigamos miles de seguidores y “me gusta”, pero mejoraremos la vida de miles de personas.

Si viéramos a los demás como personas capaces de ofrecer empatía y cuidado, nuestros entornos serían muy diferentes. Nuestros valores cambiarían. Se produciría un cambio moral que nos llevaría a ver a nuestros vecinos como fuentes de apoyo, en lugar de como competidores temibles a los que tenemos que vencer.

El problema es que no tengo los recursos para poner esto en marcha, así que pensé en contactar a mi alcalde. Al fin y al cabo, de todos los políticos que hay, los alcaldes son quienes más impacto tienen en nuestra vida cotidiana, porque están más cerca de lo que sucede. Si pueden poner carteles para animar a la gente a votar, seguro que también pueden hacer algo para promover la convivencia. Pero ¿por qué escribirle solo a mi alcalde? Copying a fashion of long hair, ripped jeans, and leather jackets was just the tip of the iceberg. The deeper philosophical shift the music brought was a disregard, disrespect, and dislike for the establishment, the status quo, and the “system” in general. An attitude that shed the happy-go-lucky feel goodness that prevailed in the pop music that was dominant until this louder sound made its appearance. The totemic symbol par excellence of this musical sect is the guitar. Hard rock gave us the first idolized thrashers. Musicians like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page are well-established members of this rather chauvinist pantheon of distortion.

As a child in the mid-80s, watching Guns & Roses on MTV, I even remember standing in front of the television pretending to be Slash. My later teenage memories, fed by extensive FM radio DJ debates, are of hours-long discussions with friends where we argued about who was the greatest axman of all time—illustrating how the conceptual framework of competition is inculcated from an early age by transposing it to fields where it’s out of place, such as the arts.

As I grew older, my taste evolved, and from a position of dominance, the guitar receded—something we brought up in vol. 2: Heavenly sounds. Although I may not have paid much attention lately to these six-stringed sirens, they were patiently waiting for me at Anthemoessa. These are the tunes they sang when I decided to stop by for a visit not so long ago.

Track 1: Here Comes The Black Moon, by Valium Aggelein

The early guitars I listened to were keys to open hell’s door. Music filled with allusions to the beast and enacted as a disguised theatrical pantomime of devil worship. Now, I prefer a guitar that transports me to the magical realm of an ever-expanding cosmos.

Track 2: Doing the Wrong Thing, by Kaki King

Known as the portable orchestra, in this song, it acts as a portable cinema. The drama of a full-speed ride on horseback through the great plains. Is it to deliver bad news? To warn about an incoming raid? To find shelter from the storm that’s looming over the horizon? I hear the desperation to reach a loved one’s embrace.

Track 3: Centered Shell, by yes/and

I’m certain—or wishful—that a hip high school teacher is using this song to introduce the concept of quantum physics to their confused and adolescent students.

Los lectores de Convirtiéndote en quien sos saben que mi recorrido musical comenzó con el rock pesado. Sin tener un doctorado en historia de la música popular, mi hipótesis es que fue uno de los primeros géneros en desarrollar un espíritu casi sectario y religioso en los suburbios blancos de clase media. Although I spout my diatribe about making the world a better place by shopping locally, I am but a mere mortal with the inherent contradictions that belong to the human condition. In other words, I sometimes buy stuff on Amazon. I’m also becoming somewhat of a minor coffee snob—it’s starting to sound like I’m a horrible person—so much like when I purchased a new electric toothbrush, I decided it was time to bump up my morning coffee routine to a modestly luxurious experience and I got a new espresso machine.

Because I invested a reasonable sum in my forenoon caffeine dispenser, I’ve committed to maintenance, the unsexy and often forgotten task that comes with any toy of a certain degree of complexity. Therefore, after a month of use, it was time for a cleaning cycle and I needed to purchase some group head cleaner—sachets with 5 grams of white powder containing who knows what environmental hazard that are used to clean the internal mechanics of the coffee maker. Although they’re probably overpriced, I wanted to get the brand the machine manufacturer endorses, and I could only find them on the cowboy rocket man’s website.

I’m not always home, so I have my packages delivered to the Western-Union/perfume-store at the corner of my street. That morning, I got the delivery notification when I was at the office. When I got home from work in the afternoon, I locked my bike and walked the 10 meters to the store while I looked for the delivery code on the digital-shopping-mall-from-hell app.

Like most cash transfer establishments, there’s always a queue of dissimilar characters navigating the more hazardous end of the precariousness spectrum. It requires a certain kind of personality to service such a wide-ranging group of people, and the lady behind the plexiglass ticks every box in her own special way. She’s warm, yet unphased by the predicaments of her clientele. The disheveled hair and pale complexion that evinces a lifetime of cigarettes and long hours conceal her kind and helpful nature. I stood in line and waited for my turn, enjoying the relief the AC gave me from the sweltering summer heat.

I’ve picked up enough packages for her to know me by now. When she saw I was next, she greeted me with a Mona Lisa smile and reached for her scanner:

—Amazon package?

—Yep. Boy, it sure is nice and cool in here.

That comment took the conversation in a direction I could never have expected. She explained how the 50-day-long heatwave we were in wasn’t a problem; the lack of rain was the real issue. She went on to explain how the Illuminati were controlling the population by limiting our access to water. They add chemicals to the contrails planes leave behind, preventing it from raining whenever clouds form.

—Don’t you notice that when it’s supposed to rain, all of a sudden the sky is full of stripes? They’re doing it so it doesn’t rain. They’ve been doing it for years already.

—I haven’t. Interesting, I’ve gotta look into that.—I answered.

I thought what she was saying was bonkers. But I also think she’s nice and I didn’t want to upset her. Besides, we’ve all dealt with enough online conspiracy nuts to know when to just walk away. Although I’m certain the cabal of degenerates that is leading us toward impending doom is up to no good, I couldn’t get my head around how these particularly weird ideas catch on and are believed by kind and rational people. If we’re not sharing reality, how are we supposed to decide what we like about it, and fix what we don’t?

Spam in a can

It was Friday, and as I rode the elevator I felt content that the week was over and I’d get to geek out with my espresso machine. I opened the door and my cat was at the threshold, sitting on the floor on her hind legs and staring all the way up to my eyes with expectations that I fulfilled by giving her a quick back rub. As I walked down the hall, I could hear my partner moving in my direction in what we’ve dubbed “the old lady salsa shuffle,” while she sang one of the thousand tunes stored in her memory until, without saying hello, she reached me and hugged me, forcing me to shuffle about with her. It was a perfect start to the weekend.

As we embraced, swaying to the music that wasn’t playing, we agreed to be lazy and indulgent and go out for dinner: cheap Euro-Thai over cold beers a couple of blocks from home. I left my bag, went to the bathroom to freshen up, changed shirts, and out we went after saying our goodbyes to our furry daughter while she gave us a typical feline glass-eyed stare.

When we reached the corner, I pointed out our usual deli to my partner. We had assumed it was closed the past couple of weeks because of the summer holidays, but the curtain was open and the shop was transformed. By the looks of it, a business that had been open for decades and had supplied us with cold cuts since we lived in the neighborhood had closed and was being replaced. It was turned into a franchise convenience store—adding to the dozen of them within a 100-meter radius of our home, catering to the tourists on their way to the attraction that’s a block from our house.

We were gutted. It was another on a long list of establishments that had succumbed to increasing rent prices, and the overall touristification of the area that’s rapidly chipping away the fabric of our fledgling community. Instead of fine charcuterie and cheese, we now have 24-hour Spam in a can. Some people call this “progress.”

It starts with a book

Sad and disappointed, we walked away. I felt my phone vibrate and saw it was a message from the bookstore. Something I’d forgotten I had ordered had just arrived. The universe noticed I needed a pick-me-up and delivered! Since it was just a few blocks out of the way from the restaurant, we decided to go for my package. As we strolled our way to the store, we talked about the deli and discussed how impotent we felt against the forces that were changing our neighborhood—you know you’ve found someone worth every bit of the effort it takes to grow and maintain a relationship when you even enjoy conversations that are shrouded in despair.

I hadn’t been to the bookstore since I picked up my summer reading material at the beginning of the season. When the owner saw us come in from her usual spot next to the till and surrounded by books, she greeted us with a welcoming hello. It was close to closing time and the store was empty, so we hung out a while chitchatting the way you do with people you’re familiar with and like, but don’t really know.

The conversation went from one topic to another. We started with the formalities, filling each other in on what we’d been up to during the summer. One thing led to another and we discussed the neighborhood community center, my partner’s work at the communal garden a few blocks away, and our shared distaste for the amount of cars in the city—you know, the usual lefty talking points. The conversation progressed and at one point we told her the sad news about the deli. She knew which one we were talking about, and although she wasn’t a customer, being a local shop owner, she was disappointed.

Aware that it was a safe space, we shared our thoughts about the state of the world and how discouraged we felt by the prevailing lack of empathy we saw around us. We also brought up our sense of helplessness when it came to doing something about it, bemoaning how legacy forms of protest, such as street marches, are merely symbolic and don’t lead to real change.

—You know what would really screw the banks? If we decide in unison to pay everything in cash instead of using cards—said the shopkeeper while she picked up the card reader and looked at it with displeasure. That’d make a big enough hole in their pockets to get them to start listening.

Credit or cash?

After a few minutes diving into the idea, closing time came so we left her to finish her day and to attend to our own growling stomachs. But the conversation didn’t leave me; it bounced in and out of my thoughts over the following couple of weeks. Sure, not paying with our cards had an obvious and direct impact on the banks because they wouldn’t collect their commission for each sale. But it felt there was more to it.

The memory of a trip I made to Stockholm more than a decade and a half ago suddenly came to mind. I was traveling alone and my usual MO when I wanted to interact with people was to stop by the pub, order a beer and hang out at the bar. I assumed that after a fyrtio or two I’d manage to engage with the locals, but I failed miserably—I never really figured out the vibe of that city. But I didn’t mind; I also enjoyed being slightly lubricated and looking around, observing a thing or two as I watched the regulars.

What I found most striking was how everyone bought their own drinks—nobody picked up a round—and how they paid for them. At the time, where I lived, cash was still the most common payment method at a bar, but here, I noticed that everyone paid with their card. They’d go to the bar, order their single beer, hand over their card, and sign a receipt. For every drink. It felt like a bureaucratic office-like buzz killer to sign a document to get a beer. But that’s how they did it, and as strange as it was to me, I was the odd one when I paid cash to a slightly irritated bartender.

Today, that scene wouldn’t surprise me at all. In fact, I barely carry cash myself. Over the last couple of decades, paper money has been phased out from daily transactions. An obvious reason is that it’s convenient. We no longer have to worry about having enough cash to go on about our daily business, as long as we have our card with us. The authorities also argue that a cashless society helps fight against tax evasion and money laundering. In few words, plastic, we’re told, is convenient, safe, and fiscally and legally sound. What more could you ask for?

It all made sense to me, but thinking about cash reminded me of the visit to the Western Union to pick up my Amazon delivery. The memory of the lady’s “chemtrails” theory got me in a conspiratorial mindset. What if there was more to the ubiquitousness of credit cards than all the benefits we’re told they have?

The first budgeting technique I learned was self-taught. When I started working and received my first pay, it was a modest salary and I needed to stretch it as much as I could. So I did the obvious: I went to the bank and withdrew part of my wages and left another part for savings. The cash I took out had to last me until the end of the month, and if it didn’t I’d have to live with that. A mid-month trip to the ATM wasn’t an option. If you’re paying with your card, on the other hand, it’s much easier to go overboard, and unless you have the ascetic discipline of a monk, it’s likely you will. In short, we’re pushed to use cards instead of cash because we tend to spend more money if we do. That’s good business—for all those companies selling us products we don’t really need.

If you’re familiar with the Stanford Marshmallow test, you also understand that there’s a more subtle layer at play here. Back in the ‘60s, a few sadistic scientists thought it’d be fun to lock kids up in a room and sit them down in front of a marshmallow. They told the children that if they waited 15 minutes without eating it, they’d get two marshmallows instead of one. The temptation to gobble down the fluffy treat was too strong and most kids failed—makes sense, if you put a bowl of chips in front of me, even if you promise me a winning lottery ticket, I don’t think I could stop myself from wolfing them down.

This teaches us that it’s much more difficult to deny instant gratification over an abstract reward in the future. Credit cards work the same way; they abstract the concept of money, and it becomes much more difficult to not spend it so we ensure we have future savings. We tend to go for the instant gratification of the shopping high because, since there’s no cash involved, we can’t even see the transaction. We just see the shiny new thing we bought.

This is a conspiracy I can get behind. We’re given a bunch of rational explanations as to why credit and debit cards are good for society, but behind that lies a more nefarious intention: to make it easier for us to spend our money and make other people even richer.

The power of narrative

We all have our own weird conspiracy theories. Some are more far-fetched than others, but that’s irrelevant; what matters is that we all have a feeling that we’re getting screwed one way or another. Either the intelligentsia are powdering the sky with chemicals to stop the rain, big-food is shutting down our corner delis to have a monopoly on our most basic need, or the financial elites have us hooked on an intravenous shopping treatment that numbs our critical thinking. We create narratives as mechanisms to cope with a reality we’re struggling to accept.

But we can turn this logic on its head. Rather than being the victims of the conspiracy, we can create the narratives and become the perpetrators. We can start creating stories of a future that’s desirable, as we’ve seen in Stories of a world to come. Or, like in It’s okay not to buy it, we can tell tales of experiences that, instead of eliminating our favorite shops like our corner deli, feed local commerce and the community that emerges around it. Our accounts of reality, instead of fueling competition and mindless consumerism, can encourage a Moral shift toward cooperation and meaning beyond the things we buy. In short, we can tap into the power of the narratives and benevolent conspiracies we tell ourselves to create a world we’d like to live in.

Aunque despotrico sobre cómo hacer del mundo un lugar mejor comprando en comercios locales, no soy más que un simple mortal con las contradicciones inherentes a la condición humana. En otras palabras, a veces compro cosas en Amazon. También me estoy convirtiendo en un snob del café—poco a poco suena a que soy una persona horrible. No siempre estoy en casa, así que hago que me envíen los paquetes en la Western Union/perfumería de la esquina de casa. Esa mañana, recibí la notificación de entrega cuando estaba en la oficina. El pelo desaliñado y la piel palida que evidencia toda una vida de cigarrillos y largas jornadas de trabajo ocultan su carácter amable y servicial. Me quedé en la fila y esperé mi turno, disfrutando del alivio que me daba el aire acondicionado frente al calor sofocante del verano.

Ya le he recogido suficientes paquetes como para que me conozca. Cuando vio que era mi turno, me saludó con una sonrisa de Mona Lisa y extendió la mano hacia su escáner:

—¿Paquete de Amazon?
—Sí. Qué bien lo fresquito que está acá.

Ese comentario llevó la conversación en una dirección que jamás habría esperado. Me explicó que la ola de calor de 50 días que estábamos atravesando no era un problema; la falta de lluvia era el verdadero problema. Luego pasó a explicarme cómo los Illuminati estaban controlando a la población limitando nuestro acceso al agua. Añaden sustancias químicas a las estelas que dejan los aviones, evitando que llueva cada vez que se forman nubes.

—¿No notás que cuando se supone que va a llover, de repente el cielo está lleno de rayas? Lo hacen para que no llueva. Hace años que lo hacen.
—No, no lo he notado. Interesante, voy a investigar el tema—respondí.

Pensé que lo que decía era una locura. Pero también me parece una persona agradable y no quería molestarla. Además, todos hemos lidiado con suficientes conspiranoicos en internet como para saber cuándo hay que alejarse. Aunque estoy seguro de que la banda de degenerados que nos está conduciendo hacia una perdición inminente no tiene buenas intenciones, no lograba entender cómo estas ideas particularmente extrañas se arraigan y llegan a ser creídas por personas amables y racionales. Si no compartimos la misma realidad, ¿cómo se supone que vamos a decidir qué nos gusta de ella y arreglar lo que no?

Mortadela en lata

Era viernes y, mientras subía en el ascensor, me sentía satisfecho de que la semana hubiera terminado y de que pudiera ponerme a experimentar con mi máquina de espresso. Abrí la puerta y mi gata estaba en el umbral, sentada en el suelo sobre sus patas traseras y mirándome directamente a los ojos con unas expectativas que cumplí dándole unas palmaditas en el lomo. Mientras caminaba por el pasillo, podía escuchar a mi pareja acercándose haciendo de lo que hemos bautizado como “el paso de salsa de la viejita”, mientras cantaba una de las mil melodías almacenadas en su memoria hasta que, sin decir hola, llegó hasta mí y me abrazó, obligándome a moverme con ella. Fue un comienzo perfecto para el fin de semana.

Mientras nos abrazábamos, balanceándonos al ritmo de una música que no estaba sonando, acordamos ser vagos e indulgentes y salir a cenar: comida euro-tailandesa barata acompañada de cervezas frías a un par de cuadras de casa. Dejé mi bolso, fui al baño a refrescarme, me cambié la camisa y salimos después de despedirnos de nuestra hija peluda, mientras ella nos dedicaba una típica mirada felina de ojos vacíos.

Cuando llegamos a la esquina, le señalé a mi pareja nuestra charcutería habitual. Habíamos supuesto que estaba cerrada durante las últimas semanas por las vacaciones de verano, pero la persiana estaba abierta y el negocio había sido transformado. En lugar de finas piezas de charcutería y queso, ahora tenemos mortadela en lata las 24 horas. Algunos llaman a esto “progreso”.

Todo empieza con un libro

Tristes y decepcionados, nos alejamos. Sentí vibrar el teléfono y vi que era un mensaje de la librería. Algo que había olvidado que había pedido acababa de llegar. ¡El universo se había dado cuenta de que necesitaba levantarme el ánimo y cumplió! Como quedaba a solo unas pocas cuadras del camino al restaurante, decidimos ir a buscar mi paquete. Mientras caminábamos hacia la tienda, hablamos de la charcutería y comentamos lo impotentes que nos sentíamos frente a las fuerzas que estaban transformando nuestro barrio—sabés que has encontrado a alguien que vale cada gramo del esfuerzo que requiere cultivar y mantener una relación cuando hasta disfrutás de conversaciones envueltas en desesperación.

No había ido a la librería desde que recogí mis lecturas de verano al principio de la temporada. Cuando la dueña nos vio entrar desde su lugar habitual junto a la caja y rodeada de libros, nos recibió con un saludo afectuoso. Estaba cerca de la hora de cierre y la tienda estaba vacía, así que nos quedamos un rato charlando, como uno hace con personas que conoce y aprecia, pero a las que en realidad no conoce demasiado.

La conversación pasó de un tema a otro. Empezamos con las formalidades, poniéndonos al día sobre lo que habíamos hecho durante el verano. Una cosa llevó a la otra y hablamos del centro comunitario del barrio, del trabajo de mi pareja en el huerto comunitario a unas pocas cuadras y de nuestro rechazo compartido a la cantidad de autos que hay en la ciudad—ya sabés, los argumentos habituales de unos mamertos de izquieda. La conversación avanzó y, en un momento, le contamos la triste noticia sobre la charcutería. Sabía de cuál hablábamos y, aunque no era clienta, como comerciante local estaba decepcionada.

Conscientes de que estábamos en un espacio seguro, compartimos nuestros pensamientos sobre el estado del mundo y lo desalentados que nos sentíamos ante la falta de empatía que predominaba a nuestro alrededor. También hablamos de nuestra sensación de impotencia a la hora de hacer algo al respecto, lamentando cómo las formas tradicionales de protesta, como las marchas callejeras, son meramente simbólicas y no conducen a cambios reales.

—¿Sabés qué realmente les jodería a los bancos? Si todos nos pusiéramos de acuerdo para pagar todo en efectivo en lugar de usar tarjetas—dijo la dueña mientras levantaba el lector de tarjetas y lo miraba con disgusto—. Les haríamos un agujero suficientemente grande en los bolsillos como para que empezaran a escucharnos.

¿Tarjeta o efectivo?

Después de unos minutos profundizando en la idea, llegó la hora de cierre, así que la dejamos terminar su jornada y nos ocupamos de nuestros propios estómagos rugientes. Pero la conversación no me abandonó; entraba y salía de mis pensamientos durante las semanas siguientes. Claro, no pagar con nuestras tarjetas tenía un impacto obvio y directo en los bancos porque no cobrarían su comisión por cada venta. Pero sentía que había algo más.

De repente me vino a la mente el recuerdo de un viaje que hice a Estocolmo hacía más de una década y media. Viajaba solo y mi método habitual cuando quería relacionarme con la gente era pasar por un pub, pedir una cerveza y quedarme un rato en la barra. Supuse que después de una o dos fyrtio conseguiría entablar conversación con los locales, pero fracasé miserablemente—nunca terminé de entender el onda de esa ciudad. Pero no me molestaba; también disfrutaba estar ligeramente lubricado y mirar a mi alrededor, observando alguna que otra cosa mientras veía a los habituales.

Lo que más me llamó la atención fue cómo cada uno compraba sus propias bebidas— nadie invitaba una ronda—y cómo pagaban por ellas. En aquella época, donde yo vivía, el efectivo seguía siendo el método de pago más común en un bar, pero allí noté que todos pagaban con tarjeta. Iban a la barra, pedían su única cerveza, entregaban la tarjeta y firmaban un recibo. Por cada bebida. Firmar un documento para conseguir una cerveza me parecía una manera bastante burocrática de arruinar una borrachera. Pero así lo hacían ellos y, por extraño que me resultara, yo era el raro cuando pagaba en efectivo ante un barman ligeramente irritado.

Hoy, esa escena no me sorprendería en absoluto. De hecho, yo mismo apenas llevo efectivo. Durante las últimas dos décadas, el dinero en papel ha ido desapareciendo de las transacciones cotidianas. Una razón obvia es que resulta conveniente. Ya no tenemos que preocuparnos por llevar suficiente efectivo para ocuparnos de nuestros asuntos cotidianos, siempre que tengamos la tarjeta con nosotros. Las autoridades también sostienen que una sociedad sin efectivo ayuda a combatir la evasión fiscal y el lavado de dinero. En pocas palabras, nos dicen que el plástico es conveniente, seguro y sólido desde el punto de vista fiscal y legal. ¿Qué más se podría pedir?

Todo me parecía tener sentido, pero pensar en el efectivo me recordó mi visita a la Western Union para recoger mi pedido de Amazon. El recuerdo de la teoría de los “chemtrails” de la mujer me puso en un estado de ánimo conspirativo. ¿Y si hubiera algo más detrás de la ubicuidad de las tarjetas de crédito a parte de todos los beneficios que nos dicen que tienen?

La primera técnica de presupuesto que aprendí fue autodidacta. Cuando empecé a trabajar y recibí mi primer sueldo, era un salario modesto y necesitaba estirarlo todo lo posible. Así que hice lo obvio: fui al banco, retiré una parte de mi sueldo y dejé otra parte para ahorrar. El efectivo que sacaba tenía que durarme hasta fin de mes y, si no me alcanzaba, tendría que vivir con eso. Un viaje al cajero automático a mitad de mes no era una opción. Si pagás con tarjeta, en cambio, es mucho más fácil pasarse de la raya y, a menos que tengas la disciplina ascética de un monje, es probable que lo hagas. En resumen, nos empujan a usar tarjetas en lugar de efectivo porque tendemos a gastar más dinero cuando lo hacemos. Eso es buen negocio—para todas las empresas que nos venden productos que realmente no necesitamos.

Si estás familiarizado con el test del malvavisco de Stanford, también entendés que aquí hay una capa más sutil en juego. Allá por los años 60, unos cuantos científicos sádicos pensaron que sería divertido encerrar a unos niños en una habitación y sentarlos frente a un malvavisco. Les dijeron que, si esperaban 15 minutos sin comérselo, recibirían dos malvaviscos en lugar de uno. La tentación de devorar el esponjoso dulce era demasiado fuerte y la mayoría de los niños fracasó—tiene sentido, si ponés un bol de papas fritas delante mío, aunque me prometas un boleto de lotería ganador, no creo que pudiera evitar devorarlas.

Esto nos enseña que es mucho más difícil negar una gratificación instantánea a cambio de una recompensa abstracta en el futuro. Las tarjetas de crédito funcionan de la misma manera; vuelven abstracto el concepto del dinero y resulta mucho más difícil no gastarlo para asegurarnos de tener ahorros en el futuro. Tendemos a buscar la gratificación instantánea del subidón de comprar porque, como no hay efectivo de por medio, ni siquiera podemos ver la transacción. Solo vemos la cosa nueva y brillante que compramos.

Esta es una conspiración con la que puedo estar de acuerdo. Nos dan un montón de explicaciones racionales sobre por qué las tarjetas de crédito y débito son buenas para la sociedad, pero detrás de eso se esconde una intención más engañosa: hacer que nos resulte más fácil gastar nuestro dinero y hacer que otras personas sean todavía más ricas.

El poder de la narrativa

Todos tenemos nuestras propias teorías conspirativas extrañas. Algunas son más inverosímiles que otras, pero eso es irrelevante; lo que importa es que todos tenemos la sensación de que nos están cagando de una manera u otra. Ya sea que los francomasones estén rociando el cielo con sustancias químicas para impedir que llueva, que las grandes empresas alimentarias estén cerrando nuestras charcuterías de barrio para tener el monopolio sobre nuestra necesidad más básica, o que las élites financieras nos tengan enganchados a un tratamiento intravenoso de compras que adormece nuestro pensamiento crítico. Creamos narrativas como mecanismos para lidiar con una realidad que nos cuesta aceptar.

Pero podemos poner esta lógica patas arriba. En lugar de ser las víctimas de la conspiración, podemos crear las narrativas y convertirnos en los perpetradores. Podemos empezar a crear historias sobre un futuro en el que nos gustaría vivir, como hemos visto en Historias de un mundo por venir. O, como en No hace falta que la compres, podemos contar historias de experiencias que, en lugar de eliminar nuestros comercios favoritos como la charcutería de barrio, alimenten el comercio local y la comunidad que surge a su alrededor. Nuestras interpretaciones de la realidad, en lugar de alimentar la competencia y el consumismo irreflexivo, pueden fomentar un Cambio moral hacia la cooperación y un sentido que vaya más allá de las cosas que compramos. En resumen, podemos aprovechar el poder de las narrativas y las conspiraciones benevolentes que nos contamos para crear un mundo en el que nos gustaría vivir.

Arrivals to new neighborhoods one will never fully belong to, and a never-ending arrival, as a visitor, to the neighborhood one once called home.

For those who aren’t familiar with tango, it’s a music of refined lyrics filled with sorrow, nostalgia, humor, joy, and devastation. It’s deeply philosophical, and its rich poetry is an expression of 20th-century South American existentialism. Like most philosophical currents, it has a language of its own: lunfardo, a form of argot that began to develop in the Río de la Plata region 150 years ago.

Heavily influenced by the languages and dialects of the European migrants who arrived in droves—primarily from Italy, Spain, France, the UK, Germany, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and Portugal—lunfardo emerged as a shared form of communication between these disparate groups. The culture of the cities that rapidly grew in the River Plate basin from the early 1900s onwards can’t be explained without understanding tango and the language it used to verbalize the region’s worldview. It was the means of expression of, as described in the lyrics of Cafetín de Buenos Aires, a miraculous mixture of suicidal know-it-alls that call that part of the world home.

Lunfardo, compounded with singular characteristics involving grammatical structures and a unique pronunciation, creates a form of Spanish like no other, which is only spoken in this corner of South America. It’s a language full of metaphor and wordplay that was universalized by the lyrics of tango and the works of great writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, and Alfonsina Storni. The identity of the Río de la Plata is forged by the distinctive sound of its spoken word.

Change is the only constant

When I was a kid in Buenos Aires in the ‘90s and saw my dad watch on TV the old movies from the ‘30s with the legendary tango singer Carlos Gardel, I could notice that the way the actors spoke was old-fashioned. However, it was familiar. My generation could still sense a shared spirit between the language we spoke with our friends at school every day and the lunfardo of my father’s and grandfather’s generation. It made us unique and recognizable—even despised, which was something we took pride in—throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

As familiar as the early 20th-century tango’s lunfardo was to me, its early 21st-century incarnation is a different story. The tango renaissance that took place during the first ten or 15 years of the 21st century waned, and a new musical phenomenon followed: Latin trap.

No other city in the American continent could be further from trap’s birthplace in Atlanta than the metropolis of the River Plate. However, Buenos Aires is fundamental to the emergence of Spanish-speaking trap, very much in the same way it was for the emergence of Spanish rock—something we discussed in a post about creative underdogs. Although the influence of lunfardo in the lyrics of Argentine Latin trap is obvious, it’s a different breed, in particular when considering pronunciation.

Latin trap artists from Buenos Aires in part share the discordant accent of early rock musicians from the country, such as Spinetta, father and son, but took it to a whole new level. To the extent that I can no longer say I share the same accent with musicians who are from, in some cases, the same city and socioeconomic background I’m from. How did such a drastic change happen?

The obvious reasons

During my childhood and teenage years, the only contact we had with foreign Spanish speakers was through dubbed TV shows and movies. Characters like Bart Simpson and Laura Ingalls all spoke in what was termed “neutral” accents that had a heavy Mexican influence. The Argentine obsession with everything European and American meant these accents were something to laugh about rather than something to imitate.

With the new century came new circumstances. After Argentina’s neoliberal experiment of the ‘90s ended in economic, social, and political collapse in 2001, a progressive wave came. The government took expansive economic measures that resolved some of the tensions and set the country on a new path toward development—if that path was sustainable is a whole other discussion. In addition, the universal healthcare system and the possibility of free higher education meant the country was again an attractive prospect for migrants.

However, rather than the European migrants of the turn of the 20th century, this time around, large numbers of Colombians and Venezuelans arrived hoping for a better future for themselves and their families. This influx of foreign Spanish speakers likely had an influence on the local accent and slang. That’s probably part of what I hear in many of the trap musicians who sound so foreign to me—where I’m the foreigner because I wasn’t there during this process of hybridization.

Also, as most old farts like me trying to make some sense of today’s world and the behavior of those who are younger than me, I can also point my finger to social media. Through these platforms, kids are much more in contact with content generated by their cohorts from every corner of the Spanish-speaking world. Children learned that as long as they have shared interests, where you’re from doesn’t matter, and there’s been rich cross-pollination throughout Latin America. That is, in today’s virtually connected world, accents are less isolated and mutually influenced.

The pernicious reasons

Up to now we’ve looked at a benevolent explanation: people moving around, bettering their lives and enriching those of others by sharing cultures, ideas, customs, and accents. However, there are more subtle forces at play. The ten years of economic prosperity between 2005 and 2015 came to a screeching halt thanks in part to the neoliberal economic policies of the governments that followed. With a crumbling welfare state and an economy in tatters, the people of Buenos Aires, foreign and native, flocked to the same casualized source of income workers from all over the world go to when in a pinch: the gig economy.

Mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, all pedaled their bikes, drove their cars, or revved their motorcycles to earn an income with Uber, Cabify, or Didi. A precarious labor force exchanged jobs with Christmas bonuses, healthcare, paid holidays, and an eight-hour workday for the stress, unpredictability, and vulnerability of the platform economy. Deprived of rights and disenfranchised, these workers are starting to organize, and some news outlets are starting to take notice. One of these is Gelatina, which invited representatives of the riders who zip through the city streets risking life and limb.

I’d understand if you’re wondering what the hell this has to do with tango, trap, lunfardo, and the language of the great poets of the Río de la Plata. We’re getting there. Well into the interview, the journalist asked one of these future union leaders about the relationship of the gig workers with the platforms. The answer was obvious: there was no relationship whatsoever. Their only contact with the company is with the customer support line, which usually means speaking with a next-generation AI chatbot. For all intents and purposes, their employer is a sophisticated answering machine they speak to over the phone.

If they have a flat tire and are running late, they call the chatbot. If the delivery address is wrong, they call the chatbot. If they get hit by a bus, they call the chatbot. If a driver, a rider, or a messenger has any issues, that’s all the support they have.

Although we’re still recovering from the shock of seeing what these sophisticated ventriloquist acts called LLMs are capable of, they’re not perfect. One of the things they struggle with is accents, in particular highly idiosyncratic and distinguishable accents such as the one spoken by the inheritors of tango’s existential dread. Therefore, these informal workers find themselves deliberately changing the way they speak to be understood by their robot employers, usually trying to use that same “neutral” Mexican-ish accent and speech pattern my generation learned by watching The Simpsons.

In other words, AI technologies are changing the way the unruly people of Buenos Aires speak. That is the pernicious effect. If you influence the way people speak, you also influence the types of things they can say and how they think. Just as tango and its language influenced the culture and philosophy of the region in the 20th century, so will AI in the 21st. However, I doubt the outcome will be as rich, inquisitive, and rebellious as the philosophy of the suicidal know-it-alls of the past.

Es un lenguaje lleno de metáforas y juegos de palabras que fue universalizado por las letras del tango y las obras de grandes escritores como Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar y Alfonsina Storni. La identidad del Río de la Plata se forja a través del sonido distintivo de su palabra hablada.

El cambio es la única constante

Cuando era chico en Buenos Aires, en los años 90, y veía a mi papá mirar en televisión las viejas películas de los años 30 protagonizadas por el legendario cantante de tango Carlos Gardel, podía notar que la forma en que hablaban los actores era anticuada. Sin embargo, me resultaba familiar. Mi generación todavía podía percibir un espíritu compartido entre el lenguaje que hablábamos con nuestros amigos en la escuela todos los días y el lunfardo de la generación de mi padre y mi abuelo. Nos hacía únicos y reconocibles—incluso despreciados, algo de lo que nos enorgullecíamos—en todo el mundo hispanohablante.

Por más familiar que me resultara el lunfardo del tango de principios del siglo XX, su encarnación de principios del siglo XXI es otra historia. El renacimiento del tango que tuvo lugar durante los primeros diez o quince años del siglo XXI se fue apagando, y le siguió un nuevo fenómeno musical: el trap latino.

Ninguna otra ciudad del continente americano podría estar más alejada del lugar de nacimiento del trap, Atlanta, que la metrópolis del Río de la Plata. Sin embargo, Buenos Aires es fundamental para la aparición del trap en castellano, de la misma manera en que lo fue para la aparición del rock en castellano—algo que discutimos en un post sobre las derrotadas creativas. Aunque la influencia del lunfardo en las letras del trap latino argentino es evidente, es una especie diferente, en particular cuando se considera la pronunciación.

Los artistas de trap latino de Buenos Aires comparten, en parte, el acento discordante de los primeros músicos de rock del país, como Spinetta, padre e hijo, pero lo llevaron a un nivel completamente nuevo. Hasta el punto de que ya no puedo decir que comparto el mismo acento que músicos que, en algunos casos, son de la misma ciudad y del mismo contexto socioeconómico del que provengo. ¿Cómo ocurrió un cambio tan drástico?

Las razones obvias

Durante mi infancia y adolescencia, el único contacto que teníamos con hablantes de castellano extranjeros era a través de programas de televisión y películas dobladas. Personajes como Bart Simpson y Laura Ingalls hablaban con lo que se denominaba acentos “neutros”, que tenían una fuerte influencia mexicana. La obsesión argentina con todo lo europeo y estadounidense hacía que esos acentos fueran algo de lo que reírse, en lugar de algo que imitar.

Con el nuevo siglo llegaron nuevas circunstancias. Después de que el experimento neoliberal de Argentina de los años 90 terminara en un colapso económico, social y político en 2001, llegó una ola progresista. El gobierno tomó medidas económicas expansivas que resolvieron algunas de las tensiones y pusieron al país en un nuevo camino hacia el desarrollo—si ese camino era sostenible es otra discusión. Además, el sistema de salud universal y la posibilidad de acceder gratuitamente a la educación superior hicieron que el país volviera a ser una opción atractiva para los migrantes.

Sin embargo, en lugar de los migrantes europeos de comienzos del siglo XX, esta vez llegaron grandes cantidades de colombianos y venezolanos con la esperanza de tener un futuro mejor para ellos y sus familias. Esta afluencia de hablantes de casteallano extranjeros sin duda tuvo influencia en el acento y la jerga locales. Probablemente eso sea parte de lo que escucho en muchos de los músicos de trap que me suenan tan extranjeros—siendo yo el extranjero porque no estuve ahí durante este proceso de hibridación.

Además, como la mayoría de los viejos como yo que intentan encontrarle algún sentido al mundo actual y al comportamiento de quienes son más jóvenes, también puedo señalar a las redes sociales. A través de estas plataformas, los chicos están mucho más en contacto con contenido generado por sus pares de todos los rincones del mundo hispanohablante. Los chicos aprendieron que, mientras tengan intereses en común, de dónde sos no importa, y se produce una rica polinización cruzada en toda América Latina. Es decir, en el mundo virtualmente conectado de hoy, los acentos están menos aislados y se influyen mutuamente.

Las razones perniciosas

Hasta ahora hemos visto una explicación benevolente: personas que se desplazan, mejorando sus propias vidas y enriqueciendo las de los demás al compartir culturas, ideas, costumbres y acentos. Sin embargo, hay fuerzas más sutiles en juego. Los diez años de prosperidad económica entre 2005 y 2015 llegaron a un abrupto final, en parte gracias a las políticas económicas neoliberales de los gobiernos que siguieron. Con un Estado de bienestar en decadencia y una economía hecha pedazos, los habitantes de Buenos Aires, extranjeros y nativos, acudieron en masa a la misma fuente de ingresos precarizada a la que recurren trabajadores de todo el mundo en época de vacas flacas: la economía de plataformas.

Madres y padres, hermanos y hermanas, hijos e hijas, todos pedaleaban sus bicicletas, conducían sus autos o aceleraban sus motocicletas para ganarse un ingreso con Uber, Cabify o Didi. Una fuerza laboral precarizada cambió empleos con aguinaldos, cobertura médica, vacaciones pagas y una jornada laboral de ocho horas por el estrés, la imprevisibilidad y la vulnerabilidad de la economía de plataformas. Privados de derechos y sin representación, estos trabajadores están empezando a organizarse, y algunos medios de comunicación están empezando a prestar atención. Uno de ellos es Gelatina, que invitó a representantes de los riders que recorren las calles de la ciudad a toda velocidad, arriesgando la vida y la integridad física.

Entendería que se estén preguntando qué carajo tiene que ver todo esto con el tango, el trap, el lunfardo y el lenguaje de los grandes poetas del Río de la Plata. Ya vamos a llegar. Bien avanzada la entrevista, el periodista le preguntó a uno de estos futuros líderes sindicales por la relación de los trabajadores de plataformas con las plataformas mismas. La respuesta era obvia: no había ninguna relación en absoluto. Su único contacto con la empresa era la línea de atención al cliente, lo que generalmente significaba hablar con un chatbot de IA de última generación. A todos los efectos prácticos, su empleador era una sofisticada máquina contestadora con la que hablaban por teléfono.

Si se les pincha una rueda y llegan tarde, llaman al chatbot. Si la dirección de entrega es incorrecta, llaman al chatbot. Si los atropella un colectivo, llaman al chatbot. Si un conductor, un rider o un mensajero tiene algún problema, eso es todo el apoyo que tienen.

Aunque todavía nos estamos recuperando del shock de descubrir de qué son capaces estos sofisticados actos de ventriloquia llamados LLM, no son perfectos. Una de las cosas con las que tienen dificultades son los acentos, en particular los acentos muy idiosincráticos y distinguibles, como el que hablan los herederos del existencialismo tanguero. Por lo tanto, estos trabajadores informales se encuentran cambiando deliberadamente la forma en que hablan para que sus empleadores robóticos puedan entenderlos, generalmente intentando utilizar ese mismo acento y patrón de habla “neutro”, medio mexicano, que mi generación aprendió viendo Los Simpson.

En otras palabras, las tecnologías de IA están cambiando la forma en que hablan los indomables porteños. Ese es el efecto pernicioso. Si influís en la forma en que habla la gente, también influís en los tipos de cosas que puede decir y en cómo piensa. Así como el tango y su lenguaje influyeron en la cultura y la filosofía de la región en el siglo XX, la IA lo hará en el XXI. Sin embargo, dudo que el resultado sea tan rico, inquisitivo y rebelde como la filosofía de los sabiondos y suicidas del pasado.

I care about how many people join this club of readers who want to poke everyday life and discover something resembling meaning. You’re not going to see me declaring in Substack Notes that “I write because I have to. If nobody reads it, the truer it is!” Don’t get me wrong, I like writing, and that is the main reason why I do it. At the same time, it gives me great pleasure when someone tells me they had a profound emotional reaction or saw things in a new way because they read one of my posts. I even enjoy—in a roundabout, weird kind of way—if someone is critical and hates what I write.

There it is. I confessed. The reason I stop myself from doing something I love, which is writing with music in mind, is that I’m worried these posts may lose me a few subscribers here and there.

It’s been something that’s been circling above my head lately. No matter how pleasurable, every single post is hard work. It’s sitting my ass down to wrestle with my own thoughts rather than just hanging out and letting life be. After roughly three years of churning out a couple of posts a month, I’m trying to figure out what I have to show for it. Although there’s been growth, and I appreciate every single read—I really, really do—I had greater expectations when I began this publication.

By this time, I assumed I’d have a much larger readership. More importantly, I thought I would’ve built a community of fellow writers. My hope was that by now I’d be discussing ideas and publishing new posts with a group of like-minded writers in different parts of the world. I imagined that, even if I wasn’t making money, I was making something happen. Something beyond a few ones and zeros being stored on a server somewhere in Substacklandia. It sounds embarrassing, even adolescent, but I thought I’d be part of a movement by now.

But I’m mainly on my own here. And although I won’t complain if it remains that way, if the movement doesn’t get started, it’s not going to be for a lack of trying. Today’s approach is to share a playlist of rich musical collaborations. Maybe it’ll inspire some of you to reach out and get something going together.

Let me be clear here, I have no idea what the mechanics of a literary partnership would look like. I have a much less clear understanding of what the outcome should be. Maybe something collaboratively introspective, if that makes any sense?

It could also start out playful and then become sinister and weirdly engaging. A sort of entertaining summertime horror flick but with some artistic value. What I know for certain is that it won’t finish in blood and gore; it’ll be a hopeful, happy ending.

Track 3: In Berlin, by Cosmo Sheldrake and Deep Throat Choir

What about a massive party where everyone is invited with their smiles, fun, sensuality, and desire to be together in this expanding mess of a magically beautiful universe? I’ve never really been that kind of guy, but I’m willing to try it out.

Me importa cuántas personas se suman a este club de lectores que quieren hurgar en la vida cotidiana y descubrir alguna semblanza de sentido. No me van a ver declarando en las notas de Substack: “Escribo porque tengo que hacerlo. Si nadie me lee, ¡más verdadero es!” No me malinterpreten, me gusta escribir, y esa es la principal razón por la que lo hago. Al mismo tiempo, me da muchísimo placer cuando alguien me cuenta que tuvo una reacción emocional profunda o que vio las cosas de una manera nueva porque leyó una de mis publicaciones. Incluso disfruto, de una manera extraña y bastante indirecta, cuando alguien critica lo que escribo y lo detesta.

Ahí está. Mi confesión. La razón por la que me impido hacer algo que me encanta, que es escribir teniendo la música en mente, es que me preocupa que estas publicaciones me hagan perder algunos suscriptores de vez en cuando.

Es algo que viene rondándome la cabeza últimamente. Por más placentero que sea, cada publicación requiere mucho trabajo. Es sentarme y pelearme con mis propios pensamientos en lugar de simplemente vaguear y dejar que la vida siga su curso. Después de aproximadamente tres años de sacar un par de publicaciones al mes, estoy tratando de entender qué tengo para mostrar a cambio. Aunque ha habido crecimiento, y agradezco cada una de las veces que me leen—de verdad—tenía expectativas más grandes cuando empecé esta publicación.

Pero la mayor parte del tiempo estoy bastante solo en esto. Y aunque no me voy a quejar si sigue siendo así, si el movimiento no llega a ponerse en marcha, no será por falta de intentos. El enfoque de hoy es compartir una playlist de ricas colaboraciones musicales. Quizás inspire a algunos de ustedes a ponerse en contacto para hacer algo juntos.

If anything, economics as a science is questionable. We discussed the idea in the early days of this publication in Everything but the economy, stupid. In broad terms, scientists observe real-world phenomena and create predictive theories based on those observations. Sound theories produce correct predictions and, more importantly, have built-in mechanisms to refute their own validity. In a way, science is a magic show where the illusionist shows you how the trick works—which probably explains why most science shows aren’t box-office hits.

Classic economics, on the other hand, rather than sticking to the observed, looks at the world and conjures assumptions to create fictional models of society, wraps those in complex mathematics, and abracadabra, out comes the theory. This magical thinking is pretty entertaining stuff, which is why every serious news show or podcast, at some point, brings up the economy.

The most popular magical assumption up the economist’s sleeve is homo economicus: the idea that people have all the available information necessary to behave rationally by weighing the pros and cons of their decisions. There’s more to it. To behave rationally, in this framework, means to always maximize benefit. In other words, humans are calculating machines who flourish by increasing their material wealth.

It’s difficult to deny this assumption. If we observe the behavior of the wealthiest men on the planet, they all look like very rational and well-adjusted people. I mean, who doesn’t name their 12th child Techno Mechanicus, fly to outer space dressed as a cowboy, or start a digital empire by creating a platform to rate if the girls on campus are hot or not? That all sounds like very reasonable behavior to me. Right?

A new perspective

Fortunately, some academics make an effort to approach the field of economics with a scientific mind and expose the absurdity of some of the assumptions of classical economic theory. One well-known example is a pair of economists who met in the ’70s at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem: Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky. Their collaboration created the foundation for the emergence of behavioral economics, a branch of the field that attempts to understand the economy while taking into consideration the wide range of motivations that influence human decision-making. In other words, without reducing humans to bizarre Dr. Spock-like automatons.

Leaning heavily on Kahneman’s and Tversky’s ideas, Richard Thaler developed Nudge theory. His work shows how we’re nudged in different ways that incentivize certain behaviors rather than others. We sometimes even do things we don’t want to because we’re nudged to do so—like when you ate your vegetables as a child because your parents promised you a slice of pie if you did. The more subtle the nudge, the more efficient it is. After all, nobody likes being told what to do.

Applied to the economy, we see businesses subtly nudge people to buy their products and services or to behave in certain ways that are to their company’s benefit.

Let’s look at an example to see how this works.

Back in my day, turning something on or off was easy. You looked at a device and searched for the largest, most prominent button. Once you found it, you pressed it. That’s not the case anymore. For example, to turn off my mobile phone, I have to press the power button and the volume up button at the same time for a few seconds. That activates the screen where I have to slide the virtual power button upwards, and the screen changes again. A second virtual power button appears that I have to tap—while I’m taking mental notes of this entire process because I’ll forget how to do it the next time I want to turn the damn thing off.

We assume this convoluted process is so we don’t turn off our phones by mistake—our naiveté when it comes to consumer goods is endearing. This is nudge theory in practice. Phone manufacturers, by making it so difficult and time-consuming to turn off our phone, are nudging us to never do it.

Why would they do this?

Phones are computers, and they take time to turn on. If in the middle of the night, while we’re struggling to fall asleep because we’re thinking about our impending doom, we consider using our phone to look up the CO₂ emissions of the Snickers bar we had for dessert, we might fall asleep while we wait for it to boot up. If the phone’s always on, that won’t happen, allowing companies to always have the opportunity to sell us something or find something out about us through it—for instance, this person is struggling to sleep, let’s show them sleeping pill advertisements the next time they’re ordering a family-size carton of Snickers bars.

ACAB: All cars are bastards

We buy a lot of stuff. As a species, we voraciously spend our money on things like food and clothing to fulfill our basic necessities, and selfie sticks and electric milk frothers to fulfill our more curious whims.

The most insidious consumer good the growth of our economy is based on is the automobile. These rolling catastrophes use up water, poisonous metals, plastics, and other materials during their production. When a manufacturer finishes making one, we have a bright box on wheels weighing in at about a ton that gets shipped from one end of the world to another, consuming the fuel that such transportation requires, so it can roar its way through streets near you. To get most of the thirsty suckers going, we pump them full of gas that comes from either a war-torn failed state or at the cost of blasting so much water into rocks kilometers deep into the ground that we cause earthquakes in the middle of Oklahoma. While we happily ride them on our way to work, these wonders of modernity spew toxic gases our children breathe, and we go so fast that we have to take care we don’t run over any of them while they’re playing stickball on the street after school. Furthermore, at the end of the ride, about 95% of the time, they’re just parked, taking up space, like that friend of yours who was kicked out by his ex-wife and asked to crash on your sofa for a few days and is texting you four months later to remind you to pick up some toothpaste on your way home.

I’m not proposing we go back to the horse and carriage; they’re slow and increase the chances of stepping into manure on our way to the office. However, the evidence shows that private ownership of cars is a bad idea. We can use cars, but they shouldn’t be our main means of transportation, and their use should be carefully and collectively managed. In other words, if you want to get somewhere on a motorized vehicle, take the bus.

Roughly half of us don’t even need to move around that much to justify owning one. According to the UN, about 45% of the world’s population lives in cities. One of the advantages of city life is that most things are nearby. Within a few kilometers we can find schools, hospitals, shops, entertainment, libraries, and work. If there’s one way to efficiently and quickly get around a lot of the world’s major towns, it’s by bicycle. However, from Tokyo to Miami, or from Buenos Aires to Madrid, many perfectly cyclable cities in the world still remain car-centric because we just like how shiny they are.

The world doesn’t have to be ugly, it can be bikes

I brought up bicycles because I’m a cycling enthusiast. Ever since I picked up the habit of moving around on my two-wheeled companion, I don’t know how I used to live without it. It makes my commute a relaxing and fun way to start my day, and it takes me out to the mountains and fresh air on the weekends. Every time I cruise along the beach, it delivers rest and restoration, and whenever I’m struggling uphill or against the wind, it teaches me that I’m stronger than I thought and that I’m capable of coping with the discomforts inherent to living. In a sense, my bicycle isn’t only a mode of transportation; it’s a teacher and a caregiver.

Although nudge theory has been nefariously deployed, such as in the case of our mobile phones, so we’re connected 24/7, this isn’t a reason to discard it. Nuclear fission led to the atomic bomb, but that doesn’t stop us from using it in life-saving cancer treatments. Maybe we can figure out a way to nudge people out of their cars and onto their bikes.

An obvious solution is for every city to have a sprawling network of bicycle lanes that make cycling easy, convenient, and safe. But that type of infrastructure takes time, is expensive, and requires previous buy-in to put in place. More than a nudge, it’s a shove. What would be a more subtle solution that might drive—pun intended—consumers to consider riding a bike instead of a car?

When push comes to nudge

People who ride a bike know that after some time wheels go flat, and if you don’t pump them periodically, the ride becomes heavy and the risk of getting a flat tire increases. That’s why most cyclists have a pump stored—probably inconveniently if they’re anything like me—in a closet somewhere in their homes.

As I rode the elevator to the ground floor the other day with my pump in hand to top up my wheels, I was a bit annoyed. After pumping my wheels, I was going to have to take the lift back up to my apartment, leave the pump behind, and then get back downstairs and get on my way. Usually that wouldn’t matter much, but I was running late for a dentist appointment and I could do without the extra elevator rides.

As I pondered my situation, I thought it’d be fantastic if I could always have a pump at the entrance of the building on the ground floor. That way I could avoid the lift—and wrestling with the vacuum cleaner every time I needed to get the pump out of the closet. I even thought about leaving my own pump at the entrance, but I’ve had things stolen that way before. That’s when it came to me. Wouldn’t it be great if it were mandatory for every building to have a communal bicycle pump in a highly visible and well-signaled place?

This would solve a few problems. Firstly, we’d have to buy fewer pumps. I know my neighbors also cycle, so instead of each of us having to own our own pump, we could share it—that’s the moral shift we sometimes talk about. It would also save energy; all those unnecessary lift rides would be a thing of the past. Possibly, it would also help with my dental health, seeing that I wouldn’t miss my hygienist appointment the next time.

More importantly, maybe it’ll work as a nudge. If the pump is clearly visible, people would notice it—the same way we used to notice power buttons. When you notice something, you think about it. Next time the neighbor in apartment 4-C is on their way out to work with their car keys in hand, dreading the rush-hour traffic they’re about to be stuck in, they might see the pump and realize they have an option and consider cycling to work. When the 4-year-old girl in 5-F—deep in the middle of the “why” phase—notices the pump at the entrance for the first time and asks her older brother what it is and why it’s there, and he explains, it might pique her interest and she’ll get into bikes for the rest of her life.

Having come this far in the post, I realize this might be a pointless and absurd idea. Just as absurd as homo economicus. On the other hand, if we don’t start nudging toward a better life, we might end up getting shoved off a precipice.

Si hay algo cuestionable, es la economía como ciencia. Ya discutimos la idea en los primeros días de esta publicación, en Todo menos la economía, estúpido. En términos generales, los científicos observan fenómenos del mundo real y crean teorías predictivas a partir de esas observaciones. Las teorías sólidas producen predicciones correctas y, lo que es más importante, tienen mecanismos incorporados para refutar su propia validez. En cierto sentido, la ciencia es un espectáculo de magia en el que el ilusionista te muestra cómo funciona el truco—lo que probablemente explica por qué la mayoría de los programas de ciencia no son éxitos de taquilla.

La economía clásica, en cambio, en lugar de atenerse a lo observado, mira el mundo y conjura supuestos para crear modelos ficticios de la sociedad, los envuelve en matemáticas complejas y, abracadabra pata de cabra, de ahí sale la teoría. Este pensamiento mágico es bastante entretenido, por eso todo programa de noticias o podcast serio, en algún momento, habla de la economía.

El supuesto mágico más popular que tiene el economista bajo la manga es el homo economicus: la idea de que las personas tienen toda la información disponible necesaria para comportarse racionalmente, sopesando los pros y los contras de sus decisiones. Hay algo más. Comportarse racionalmente, en este marco, significa maximizar siempre el beneficio. En otras palabras, los seres humanos somos máquinas calculadoras que prosperan aumentando su riqueza material.

Es difícil negar este supuesto. Si observamos el comportamiento de los hombres más ricos del planeta, todos parecen personas muy racionales y bien adaptadas. Quiero decir, ¿quién no le pone Techno Mechanicus a su duodécimo hijo, vuela al espacio vestido de cowboy o empieza un imperio digital creando una plataforma para calificar si las chicas del campus son lindas o no? Todo eso me parece un comportamiento muy razonable. ¿No?

Una nueva perspectiva

Por suerte, algunos académicos se esfuerzan por abordar el campo de la economía con una mentalidad científica y exponer lo absurdo de algunos de los supuestos de la teoría económica clásica. Un ejemplo muy conocido es el de dos economistas que se conocieron en los años 70 en la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén: Daniel Kahneman y Amos Tversky. Su colaboración sentó las bases para el surgimiento de la economía conductual, una rama del campo que intenta comprender la economía teniendo en cuenta la amplia variedad de motivaciones que influyen en la toma de decisiones humanas. En otras palabras, sin reducir a los seres humanos a autómatas bizarros al mejor estilo Dr. Spock.

Basándose fuertemente en las ideas de Kahneman y Tversky, Richard Thaler desarrolló la teoría del empujón. Su trabajo muestra cómo recibimos pequeños empujones de distintas maneras que incentivan determinados comportamientos en lugar de otros. A veces incluso hacemos cosas que no queremos hacer porque nos empujan a hacerlo—como cuando comías tus verduras de chico porque tus padres te prometían una torta si lo hacías. Cuanto más sutil sea el empujón, más eficaz será. Después de todo, a nadie le gusta que le digan qué hacer.

Aplicado a la economía, vemos que las empresas empujan sutilmente a las personas a comprar sus productos y servicios o a comportarse de determinadas maneras que benefician a la compañía.

Veamos un ejemplo para entender cómo funciona.

En mi época, encender o apagar algo era fácil. Mirabas un dispositivo y buscabas el botón más grande y más visible. Una vez que lo encontrabas, lo apretabas. Eso ya no es así. Por ejemplo, para apagar mi teléfono tengo que apretar el botón de encendido y el botón de subir el volumen al mismo tiempo durante unos segundos. Eso activa la pantalla, donde tengo que deslizar hacia arriba el botón virtual de encendido, y la pantalla vuelve a cambiar. Aparece un segundo botón virtual de encendido que tengo que tocar—mientras voy tomando notas mentales de todo el proceso porque me voy a olvidar de cómo hacerlo la próxima vez que quiera apagar esta maldita cosa.

Suponemos que este proceso tan complicado existe para que no apaguemos el teléfono por accidente—nuestra ingenuidad cuando se trata de bienes de consumo es enternecedora. Esto es la teoría del empujón en la práctica. Los fabricantes de teléfonos, al hacer que sea tan difícil y lleve tanto tiempo apagar el teléfono, nos están empujando a no hacerlo nunca.

¿Por qué harían esto?

Los teléfonos son computadoras y tardan en encenderse. Si en mitad de la noche, mientras luchamos por conciliar el sueño porque estamos pensando en nuestra inminente perdición, consideramos usar el teléfono para buscar las emisiones de CO₂ de la barra de Snickers que comimos de postre, podríamos quedarnos dormidos mientras esperamos a que arranque. Si el teléfono está siempre encendido, eso no va a pasar, lo que les permite a las empresas tener siempre la oportunidad de vendernos algo o averiguar algo sobre nosotros a través de él. Por ejemplo, esta persona tiene dificultades para dormir, mostremos anuncios de pastillas para dormir la próxima vez que esté comprando un paquete familiar de Snickers.

Que no quede ni uno solo

Compramos un montón de cosas. Como especie, gastamos nuestro dinero vorazmente en cosas como comida y ropa para satisfacer nuestras necesidades básicas, y selfie sticks y espumadores eléctricos de leche para satisfacer nuestros caprichos más curiosos.

El bien de consumo más insidioso en el que se basa el crecimiento de nuestra economía es el automóvil. Estas catástrofes con ruedas consumen agua, metales venenosos, plásticos y otros materiales durante su producción. Cuando un fabricante termina de hacer uno, tenemos una caja brillante sobre ruedas que pesa alrededor de una tonelada y que es enviada de un extremo del mundo al otro, consumiendo el combustible que requiere semejante transporte, para poder rugir por las calles cercanas a vos. Para poner en marcha a la mayoría de estos sedientos desgraciados, los llenamos de nafta que proviene de un Estado fallido y devastado por la guerra, o que se obtiene a costa de inyectar tanta agua en rocas a kilómetros de profundidad que provocamos terremotos en el medio de Oklahoma. Mientras los manejamos alegremente de camino al trabajo, estas maravillas de la modernidad expulsan gases tóxicos que respiran nuestros hijos, y vamos tan rápido que tenemos que cuidarnos de no atropellar a ninguno mientras juegan al fútbol en la calle después de la escuela. Además, una vez que terminás de usarlo, alrededor del 95% del tiempo está simplemente estacionado, ocupando espacio, como ese amigo tuyo al que su exesposa echó de la casa y que te pidió quedarse unos días en tu sillón y que cuatro meses después te manda un mensaje para recordarte que compres dentrífico de camino a casa.

No estoy proponiendo que volvamos al caballo y al carruaje; son lentos y aumentan las posibilidades de pisar bosta de camino a la oficina. Sin embargo, la evidencia muestra que la propiedad privada de automóviles es una mala idea. Podemos usar autos, pero no deberían ser nuestro principal medio de transporte, y su uso debería gestionarse de manera cuidadosa y colectiva. En otras palabras, si querés llegar a algún lugar en un vehículo motorizado, tomate el 60.

Aproximadamente la mitad de nosotros ni siquiera necesita desplazarse tanto como para justificar tener uno. Según la ONU, alrededor del 45% de la población mundial vive en ciudades. Una de las ventajas de la vida urbana es que la mayoría de las cosas están cerca. A pocos kilómetros podemos encontrar escuelas, hospitales, comercios, entretenimiento, bibliotecas y trabajo. Si hay una manera de desplazarse de forma eficiente y rápida por muchas de las principales ciudades del mundo, es en bicicleta. Sin embargo, desde Tokio hasta Miami, o desde Buenos Aires hasta Madrid, muchas ciudades perfectamente aptas para andar en bicicleta siguen estando centradas en el automóvil porque simplemente nos gusta lo brillantes que son.

El mundo no tiene por qué ser feo, puede estar lleno de bicicletas

Mencioné las bicicletas porque soy un entusiasta del ciclismo. Desde que adquirí el hábito de desplazarme sobre mi compañera de dos ruedas, no sé cómo hacía para vivir sin ella. Hace que mi viaje al trabajo sea una manera relajada y divertida de empezar el día, y los fines de semana me lleva a las montañas y al aire fresco. Cada vez que recorro la costa, me brinda descanso y recuperación, y cada vez que lucho cuesta arriba o contra el viento, me enseña que soy más fuerte de lo que pensaba y que soy capaz de sobrellevar las incomodidades inherentes a estar vivo. En cierto sentido, mi bicicleta no es solamente un medio de transporte; es una maestra y una cuidadora.

Aunque la teoría del empujón se haya utilizado de manera perversa, como en el caso de nuestros teléfonos para mantenernos conectados las 24 horas, esto no es motivo para descartarla. La fisión nuclear condujo a la bomba atómica, pero eso no nos impide utilizarla en tratamientos contra el cáncer que salvan vidas. Tal vez podamos encontrar una manera de empujar a la gente a salir de sus autos y subirse a sus bicicletas.

Una solución obvia sería que cada ciudad tuviera una extensa red de ciclovías que hiciera que andar en bicicleta fuera fácil, cómodo y seguro. Pero ese tipo de infraestructura lleva tiempo, es costosa y requiere un apoyo previo para poder implementarse. Más que un empujóncito, es un empujón. ¿Cuál podría ser una solución más sutil que llevara a los consumidores a considerar andar en bicicleta en lugar de usar el auto?

A veces necesitamos un empujoncito

La gente que anda en bicicleta sabe que, después de un tiempo, las ruedas se desinflan y, si no las inflás periódicamente, andar se vuelve más pesado y aumenta el riesgo de pinchar una rueda. Por eso, la mayoría de los ciclistas tiene una bomba guardada, probablemente de manera bastante inconveniente si son como yo, en algún armario de su casa.

El otro día, mientras bajaba en el ascensor hasta la planta baja con la bomba en la mano para inflar las ruedas, estaba un poco molesto. Después de inflarlas, iba a tener que volver a subir en el ascensor hasta mi departamento, dejar la bomba y después volver a bajar para poder seguir mi camino. Normalmente no sería gran cosa, pero llegaba tarde a una cita con el dentista y podía prescindir de esos viajes adicionales en ascensor.

Mientras pensaba en mi situación, pensé que sería fantástico poder tener siempre una bomba en la entrada del edificio, en la planta baja. De esa manera podría evitar el ascensor y tener que pelearme con la aspiradora cada vez que necesitara sacar la bomba del armario. Incluso pensé en dejar mi propia bomba en la entrada, pero ya me han robado cosas de esa manera. Fue entonces cuando se me ocurrió. ¿No sería genial que fuera obligatorio que todos los edificios tuvieran una bomba de bicicleta comunitaria en un lugar muy visible y bien señalizado?

Esto resolvería algunos problemas. Primero, tendríamos que comprar menos bombas. Sé que mis vecinos también andan en bicicleta, así que en lugar de que cada uno de nosotros tenga que tener su propia bomba, podríamos compartirla—ese es el cambio moral del que hablamos a veces. También ahorraría energía; todos esos viajes innecesarios en ascensor serían cosa del pasado. Posiblemente también ayudaría a mi salud dental, ya que la próxima vez no me perdería mi cita con el higienista.

Más importante aún, quizás funcione como un empujóncito. Si la bomba está claramente visible, la gente la notaría—de la misma manera que antes notábamos los botones de encendido. Cuando notás algo, pensás en eso. La próxima vez que el vecino del 4-C esté saliendo para ir al trabajo con las llaves del auto en la mano, temiendo el tránsito de hora pico en el que está a punto de quedar atrapado, podría ver la bomba, darse cuenta de que tiene una alternativa y considerar ir en bicicleta al trabajo. Cuando la nena de 4 años del 5-F, en plena etapa del “¿por qué?”, note la bomba en la entrada por primera vez y le pregunte a su hermano mayor qué es y por qué está ahí, y él se lo explique, quizás despierte su interés y se aficione a las bicicletas para el resto de su vida.

Llegado hasta acá, me doy cuenta de que esta podría ser una idea absurda y sin sentido. Tan absurda como el homo economicus. Por otro lado, si no empezamos a darnos empujoncitos hacia una vida mejor, podríamos terminar siendo empujados al precipicio.

My sweet tooth is the most inescapable characteristic that’s been handed down to me from my culture. With the immigrants who arrived by the shipload during the last decades of the 19th century and the dawn of the 20th came an influx of sweet, pastry, dessert, and confectionery traditions from all over the world. Indigenous culture added to those traditions, and they mixed and evolved over a century and a half. The end result is a marvelous dessert menu that, having emigrated, I dearly miss.

One of the good things about coming from a country with a history of failed governments is that, although you might find yourself pushed to leave, you won’t be going alone. I’m part of a diaspora, a word a lot of football fans learned during the World Cup, which is nothing more than a chic way of saying "immigrants who share a cultural origin." The terrible economic and political decisions made over the years, as a nation or coerced by foreign intervention, expelled so many of "my people" that there are enough of us where I live to make it easy for me to find a bakery and get a good slice of pie that tastes like home. It’s that beautiful full circle that immigration has gifted our species throughout millennia.

When my brother-in-law was in town, I took the visit as an excuse to fulfill my own cravings and proposed taking him to my favorite bakery so he could try my country’s goods. My partner, who’s also caught the bug for certain sweets since she was introduced to my culture, liked the idea. We waited for a while after lunch to avoid the most abrasive hours of the summer sun, and off we went. It’s a 10-minute walk from home to the bakery, and whenever I reach the corner where I can see the shop’s blue door halfway down the block, like a child, I prickle with enthusiastic excitement.

Some people I’ve taken there were disappointed when they walked in. Besides the basic pastries, they don’t make a huge variety of cakes, and they don’t always have the same ones. Obviously, it’s a downer to see they don’t have your particular craving on the menu. But this place has it figured out: whatever they have will be just as good as, or unexpectedly better than, what you wanted. They understand that a good product requires engagement, and if you try to make everything, you can’t engage with anything. That’s not how they want to make a profit, and that’s what makes them good.

The sales season had started the week before, and I needed a new pair of slacks. After we enjoyed sharing cultures, ate too many pastries, and finished our coffees, my partner and her brother headed back home, and I went into town to hit the shops. I like to have nice things, but I’m not elated by the shopping experience. I was fully prepared to tolerate the internal metaphysical dissonance of shopping at the big brands to get the job done quickly and as pain-free as possible. I was hunting for a decent product that looked good at a price I didn’t agree with, but saw coming. In short, I had made peace with fulfilling my role in our consumer society.

I found my way to the high streets and reached the door of the world’s favorite cowboy store, took a deep breath, and stepped through the automatic doors as they opened. The blast of cold air that instantaneously froze the sweat on my temple alleviated whatever discomfort I had before walking in. I needed a light pair of pants for the summer, so I went straight for the chinos. The price was what I expected, but there wasn’t much on offer, and nothing really fit very well. I was willing to pay for an overpriced, child-labor-made, excessively advertised moral and environmental disaster, but it at least had to make my bum look good.

Disappointed that I needed to carry on, I headed over to another big-brand shop. After walking in, an unenthusiastic employee told me the chinos were at the back. When I got there, I saw they had loads of models and all the colors I could imagine. Unfortunately, all of them had a noticeable brand logo on the back left pocket. If I’m going to be a walking billboard for this brand, I’d request that they give me the pants for free. Certain the employees weren’t going to meet my demand, I left the shop empty-handed.

Having accepted that the battle was lost and that I’d need to muster up the energy to go shopping again during the weekend if I wanted to win the war, I meandered my way back home. As dusk did its magic, turning disappointment into a delightful stroll through the city, my consumerist failure tucked itself further into the back of my head. I was just a few blocks from home, and something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. A neighborhood shop that, whenever I pass by, always has clothes I like on display. How could I not have thought about it? I decided to walk in.

The music was at just the right volume, and you could tell it had been curated. It’s a small shop, so they don’t have that many options, but everything looks amazing—the clothing was as well curated as the music. This wasn’t my first time in this store. Last winter, I walked out of it with a lovely new scarf.

As soon as she noticed me, who I believe is the owner approached me and politely asked if I had been to her shop before. I told her I had.

“You bought a scarf here a while back, didn’t you?” she inquired in a foreign accent I couldn’t pinpoint.

That’s engagement. She not only curates the finest clothing, she’s so involved in sharing her collection with others that she even remembers who left satisfied with her wares.

She attentively listened to what I was looking for and within a minute handed me three pairs of pants that elegantly fit my casual style to a tee. As she gave them to me, she told me the story of each garment: the brand's philosophy, how it used sustainably sourced materials, and the importance of the clothes being made in neighboring economies by workers who were treated with respect and paid a decent wage. In other words, this was going to be expensive.

Unabashed, I asked about prices because I was on a budget. They were more expensive than what I saw at the big-brand shops before, but not by much. They were above my budget, but it was within a negotiable margin. I had to make a choice. I could save a tenner or two and go for the moral and environmental disasters, or I could spend a bit more than I expected and purchase a sustainable product from a local business. Fortunately, I’m in a position where that type of decision is easy and, after trying on the pants, my mind was made up.

At the register, the haberdasher abruptly stopped the transaction and said she had something I’d like to see. It was so sudden I didn’t even see where she pulled out a short-sleeved, salmon-colored shirt with silky cotton and charismatic dark brown wooden buttons. A few hours ago, when I saw the bakery, I was prickled by excitement. Now I was jolted into ecstasy. It was perfect for me, and it also matched the pants I bought. I didn’t really need the shirt, but I wanted it.

I started doing the mental math, figuring out how much emotional energy it would cost me to buy something I could afford but was a superfluous and unnecessary luxury purchase. I don’t want to fill my life with things I don’t need at the cost of an environment that’s crumbling… But like I said, I wanted that shirt. I’m pretty sure the sight was very unappealing, to the point that the shopkeeper noticed something was wrong. Feeling guilty for tempting me with the shirt and looking to comfort me, she said:

“It’s okay, you don’t have to buy it. It’s important to shop responsibly.”

I was certain I was going to buy that shirt, and she would have made a profit from it. She’d probably been selling clothes for years and knew that by my reaction. But for her, shopping responsibly was important. Even more so, selling responsibly was important. If someone walks into her shop and needs a pair of slacks, she’ll do her best to have a happy customer walk out with a pair of slacks, not with three other things they didn’t need and maybe couldn’t afford. Her comment brought me down from the consumer high I was in, and I walked out of the store with a new pair of pants—that make my bum look great—and nothing more.

On the way back, I remembered one of my recent posts, There Is Such a Thing as Too Much Ice Cream, a review of a Wendell Berry book where we discussed the importance of scale. Whether you're selling chocolate chip fudge ice cream, fresh pastries, or blue jeans, scale matters. If our purpose is to make more money by selling stuff, we get the cheapest product for the highest price possible.

What I learned from that day’s visit to the bakery and after doing some late-afternoon bargain hunting is that I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the sound of that. The bakery isn’t serving every pie you could imagine in seven different locations. They’re doing small-batch baking based on the pastry chef’s daily whims and seasonal products. The lady in the clothes shop preferred that I shop responsibly rather than make an extra buck off me. There are other approaches, besides profit-driven markets, to building an economy. These businesses are an example of that.

It turns out there are people that like delivering a quality product for a fair price. There are businesses that find it more important to be involved with what they’re doing, then to cash in their first million. Some people want to find their passions and engage with them through work as a path toward autonomy rather than the alienating dependency wage labor has become.

The shopping experience is designed to make us buy. We’re pushed as sophisticatedly as possible to spend as much money as possible on the least valuable products possible. That is, the purpose of the experience is profit rather than satisfaction. Fortunately, there are other types of businesses that understand that profit alone is unfulfilling. So go out there, support your local clothes store, the corner bodega, and the neighborhood bookshop. If they were in it just for the money, they wouldn’t be doing it. Because they’re in it for satisfaction, they’ll be happy to tell you it’s okay not to buy it, whatever it may be.

Una de las ventajas de venir de un país con una larga historia de gobiernos fracasados es que, aunque te veas empujado a irte, no te vas solo. Formo parte de una diáspora, una palabra que muchos hinchas aprendieron durante el Mundial y que no es más que una forma elegante de decir “inmigrantes que comparten un mismo origen cultural”. Las terribles decisiones económicas y políticas tomadas a lo largo de los años, ya sea por iniciativa propia o bajo intervención extranjera, expulsaron a tantos de “los míos” que donde emigré somos suficientes como para que me resulte fácil encontrar una panadería y conseguir una buena porción de tarta que sepa a como en casa. Es ese hermoso círculo completo que la inmigración le ha regalado a nuestra especie durante milenios.

Cuando mi cuñado vino de visita, aproveché la ocasión para darme un gusto y le propuse llevarlo a mi panadería favorita para que probara los productos de mi país. A mi pareja, que desde que conoció mi cultura también desarrolló debilidad por algunos de sus dulces, le gustó la idea. Esperamos un rato después del almuerzo para evitar las horas más abrasadoras del sol de verano y salimos. Desde casa hasta la panadería hay diez minutos caminando y, cada vez que llego a la esquina desde donde se ve su puerta azul, a mitad de cuadra, siento ese cosquilleo de entusiasmo infantil.

Algunas personas que llevé quedaron decepcionadas cuando entraron. Además de la pastelería básica, no elaboran una gran variedad de tortas y tampoco tienen siempre las mismas. Obviamente, es un bajón descubrir que justo el antojo que tenías no está en el mostrador. Pero saben lo que hacen: tengan lo que tengan, va a ser tan bueno como lo que buscabas o, inesperadamente, incluso mejor. Entienden que un buen producto requiere dedicación y que, si intentás hacer de todo, no podés comprometerte con nada. Esa no es la forma en que quieren ganar dinero, y justamente por eso son tan buenos.

La temporada de rebajas había empezado la semana anterior y necesitaba un pantalón nuevo. Después de disfrutar compartiendo nuestras culturas, comer demasiados dulces y terminar el café, mi pareja y su hermano volvieron a casa, y yo me fui al centro. Me gusta tener cosas lindas, pero la experiencia de comprar no me entusiasma. Estaba completamente preparado para tolerar la disonancia metafísica interna que implica comprar en las grandes marcas con tal de resolver el asunto lo más rápido y sin dolor posible. Buscaba un producto decente, que se viera bien y tuviera un precio con el que no estaba de acuerdo, pero que ya esperaba. En pocas palabras, había hecho las paces con cumplir mi papel dentro de nuestra sociedad de consumo.

Llegué al centro y me planté frente a la puerta de la tienda de vaqueros favorita del mundo. Respiré hondo y crucé las puertas automáticas apenas se abrieron. La ráfaga de aire frío que congeló al instante el sudor de mi sien alivió cualquier incomodidad que hubiera sentido antes de entrar. Necesitaba un pantalón liviano para el verano, así que fui directo a los chinos. El precio era el que esperaba, pero no había demasiado para elegir y nada me quedaba realmente bien. Estaba dispuesto a pagar por un desastre moral y ambiental sobrevaluado, producido con trabajo infantil y promocionado hasta el hartazgo, pero como mínimo tenía que hacer que se viera bien mi culo.

Decepcionado por tener que seguir buscando, fui hasta otra tienda de una gran marca. Apenas entré, un empleado poco entusiasta me indicó que los chinos estaban al fondo. Cuando llegué, vi que tenían muchísimos modelos y todos los colores que pudiera imaginar. Lamentablemente, todos llevaban un enorme logo de la marca en el bolsillo trasero izquierdo. Si voy a ser un cartel publicitario ambulante para esta marca, lo mínimo que pediría es que me regalaran el pantalón. Como estaba bastante seguro de que los empleados no iban a aceptar mi propuesta, me fui con las manos vacías.

Después de aceptar que esa batalla estaba perdida y que iba a tener que reunir energías para volver a salir de compras el fin de semana si quería ganar la guerra, emprendí el camino de regreso a casa sin apuro. A medida que el atardecer hacía su magia y convertía la decepción en un paseo encantador por la ciudad, mi fracaso consumista fue quedando cada vez más al fondo de mi conciencia. Estaba a apenas unas cuadras de casa cuando algo, por el rabillo del ojo, llamó mi atención. Un negocio de barrio que, cada vez que paso por delante, siempre tiene ropa que me gusta en la vidriera. ¿Cómo no se me había ocurrido antes? Decidí entrar.

La música estaba al volumen justo y se notaba que había sido cuidadosamente seleccionada. Es un local chico, así que no tiene demasiadas opciones, pero todo se veía increíble: la ropa estaba tan cuidadosamente elegida como la música. No era la primera vez que entraba a esa tienda. El invierno pasado salí de ahí con una bufanda nueva muy linda.

Apenas me vio, quien creo que es la dueña se acercó y me preguntó con mucha amabilidad si ya había estado antes en el local.

Le dije que sí.

—Compraste una bufanda acá hace un tiempo, ¿no? —me preguntó con un acento extranjero que no supe identificar.

Eso es compromiso. No solo selecciona la mejor ropa; está tan involucrada en compartir su colección con los demás que hasta recuerda quiénes se fueron satisfechos con lo que compraron.

Escuchó atentamente lo que estaba buscando y, en menos de un minuto, me alcanzó tres pantalones que encajaban a la perfección con mi estilo informal. Mientras me los daba, me contó la historia de cada prenda: la filosofía de la marca, cómo utilizaba materiales obtenidos de manera sustentable y la importancia de que la ropa fuera confeccionada en economías vecinas por trabajadores tratados con respeto y con un salario digno. En otras palabras, aquello iba a ser caro.

Sin avergonzarme, le pregunté por los precios porque tenía un presupuesto. Eran más caros que los que había visto antes en las tiendas de las grandes marcas, pero no por mucho. Superaban mi presupuesto, aunque por un margen que estaba dispuesto a negociar conmigo mismo. Tenía que tomar una decisión. Podía ahorrarme diez o veinte moneadas y optar por los desastres morales y ambientales, o podía gastar un poco más de lo que había previsto y comprar un producto sustentable en un comercio local. Por suerte, estoy en una situación en la que ese tipo de decisiones son fáciles y, después de probarme los pantalones, ya no tuve dudas.

Cuando llegamos a la caja, la vendedora detuvo de golpe la transacción y me dijo que tenía algo que quería mostrarme. Fue tan repentino que ni siquiera vi de dónde sacó una camisa de manga corta color salmón, de algodón sedoso y con unos carismáticos botones de madera color marrón oscuro. Unas horas antes, cuando vi la panadería, me había invadido una emoción infantil. Ahora estaba eufórico. Era perfecta para mí y, además, combinaba con el pantalón que acababa de comprar. La verdad es que no necesitaba esa camisa, pero la quería.

Empecé a hacer cuentas mentalmente, calculando cuánta energía emocional me costaría comprar algo que podía pagar, pero que era un lujo completamente superfluo e innecesario. No quiero llenar mi vida de cosas que no necesito a costa de un medio ambiente que se está desmoronando... Pero, como dije, quería esa camisa. Estoy bastante seguro de que mi expresión no era muy agradable de ver, tanto que la dueña se dio cuenta de que algo andaba mal. Sintiéndose culpable por haberme tentado con la camisa e intentando tranquilizarme, me dijo:

—Está bien, no hace falta que la compres. Es importante comprar de manera responsable.

Estaba seguro de que iba a comprar esa camisa y de que ella habría obtenido una ganancia con la venta. Probablemente llevaba años vendiendo ropa y lo supo apenas vio mi reacción. Pero para ella era importante que la gente comprara responsablemente. Más importante todavía, era importante vender responsablemente. Si alguien entra a su negocio porque necesita un pantalón, ella va a hacer todo lo posible para que salga contento con un pantalón, no con otras tres cosas que no necesitaba y que quizá ni siquiera podía pagar. Su comentario me bajó de la euforia consumista en la que estaba y salí del local con un pantalón nuevo—que hace que mi culo se vea muy bien—y nada más.

De camino a casa, me acordé de una de mis publicaciones recientes, Es posible tomar demasiado helado, una reseña de un libro de Wendell Berry en la que hablábamos sobre la importancia de la escala. Ya sea que vendas helado de dulce de leche granizado, facturas recién hechas o jeans, la escala importa. Si nuestro propósito es ganar más dinero vendiendo cosas, terminamos ofreciendo el producto más barato al precio más alto posible.

Lo que aprendí de aquella visita a la panadería y de esa tarde de recorrer negocios en busca de ofertas es que no soy el único al que esa idea le hace ruido. La panadería no intenta vender todas las tartas que uno pueda imaginar en siete sucursales distintas. Hace pequeñas tandas de producción según los caprichos diarios de la pastelera y los productos de estación. La dueña del local de ropa prefería que yo comprara responsablemente antes que ganarse unos pesos más conmigo. Existen otras formas de construir una economía, además de los mercados impulsados por la búsqueda de ganancias. Estos negocios son un ejemplo de eso.

Resulta que hay personas a las que les gusta ofrecer un producto de calidad a un precio justo. Hay negocios para los que es más importante involucrarse con lo que hacen que hacerse millonarios lo antes posible. Hay quienes quieren encontrar aquello que los apasiona y comprometerse con ello a través del trabajo, como un camino hacia la autonomía, en lugar de la dependencia alienante en la que se ha convertido el trabajo asalariado.

La experiencia de compra está diseñada para hacernos comprar. Nos empujan, con toda la sofisticación posible, a gastar la mayor cantidad de dinero posible en los productos menos valiosos posibles. Es decir, el propósito de esa experiencia es la ganancia, no la satisfacción. Por suerte, existen otros tipos de negocios que entienden que la ganancia, por sí sola, no alcanza. Así que salí y apoyá al negocio de ropa de tu barrio, al almacén de la esquina y a la librería del vecindario. Si estuvieran en esto únicamente por el dinero, no lo estarían haciendo. Como están en esto por la satisfacción que les da, van a ser felices de decirte que está bien no comprarlo, sea lo que sea.

A tough decision

It wouldn’t be fitting for WBT to miss the opportunity of publishing a piece that goes on a bit about football while the 2026 World Cup is happening. After all, football has been a Writer by Technicality leitmotiv. The silence on the topic is the result of the boycott of the tournament announced in The North/South Divide in Sports. The ongoing persecution of immigrants in the US, the war in Iran, the country’s role in the Palestinian genocide, and the intervention in Venezuela were all considered when deciding not to watch the tournament.

But we’d have to boycott everything if we did so based on policy decisions from some government we didn’t agree with. The reasons to boycott this tournament in particular are also directly related to football. FIFA, an organization suspected of fraudulent practices for decades, decided to openly and unscrupulously rip off fans by charging exorbitant ticket prices. As a result, everyday supporters have been excluded from participation. On a more personal level, the football association of the team I follow is also mired in corruption scandals. Furthermore, members of my team are sponsored by betting websites, at the same time that the country they represent is navigating a child gambling crisis.

As the kickoff date approached, it felt as if all the fun had been sucked out of the most popular game in the world. We decided to boycott.

Real shockers

Although we’re not watching the games, we are following the results, and as usual, there’ve been some shockers. Until they were narrowly knocked out by Argentina, Cape Verde captured everyone’s hearts. The island nation, with a population of just over 500 thousand, had one of the most commendable performances in World Cup history, playing against three world champions and not losing to any of them within the game’s 90 minutes. Before they were cast as the villains because of their creative strategy against France, Paraguay gained admirers by defeating Germany in one of the greatest upsets in recent World Cup history.

However, the real shocker over the last week has nothing to do with football and is a humanitarian tragedy. Of course, we’re talking about the earthquake that hit Venezuela on the 24th of June. Although we don’t know the extent of the destruction caused by the powerful double shock that hit a few hundred kilometers from Caracas, we know it’s bad. Very bad.

Venezuela hasn’t had it easy lately. A divisive political regime, a lack of democratic representation, covert and overt foreign intervention, a battered economy, hyperinflation, and a trade blockade have left the country in a fragile state. The dire situation led a quarter of the population to flee the nation over the last couple of decades. And now this: geological devastation of a magnitude rarely seen before. Thousands of people have died, many thousands have disappeared, and countless many more have lost everything.

Staring disaster in the face, humanity did what humanity always does. Although it isn’t nearly enough, there’s been an outpouring of demonstrations of solidarity with the Venezuelan people. With financial aid, food, medical supplies, and donations, the people of the world have done the usual and let Venezuelans know they’re not alone. Of course, none of this support will bring loved ones back or restore anything approximating normalcy, but in the midst of tragedy, it does offer some relief: to the Venezuelan people, and to those of us who sometimes lose hope in humanity.

Wonders of the 21st century

While some of the best athletes in the world meet in North America to play some footie and the planet shakes in South America, there’s been another item in the news that rocked the world. The 21st century gave birth to some wondrous things: the sequencing of the human genome, the taming of HIV, the Webb telescope, ubiquitous mobile telecommunications, and of course, the ability to broadcast to the world that we’ve had a 20-dollar avocado toast for brunch. Our latest and greatest invention is the trillionaire.

Following the SpaceX IPO, Elon Musk became the world’s first-ever trillionaire. Some commentators and pundits decry this milestone as yet another symbol of an increasingly unequal world where wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few. That’s short-sighted. The advent of the first trillionaire means the financial system can finally do its thing, and all those poor billionaires will enjoy the benefits of trickle-down economics. It’s a breakthrough!

It’s depressing, that’s what it is. At least it depressed my partner and me while we were drinking a beer on the balcony to get some relief from the heat. With a quarter of the Venezuelan people living abroad, a lot of us have Venezuelan friends, colleagues, family, and acquaintances. Given the magnitude of the damage, all those people we know have friends, colleagues, family, and acquaintances who either passed away, are missing, or are destitute. It’s a tragedy we can relate to.

As we sat together enjoying our relaxing evening, we couldn’t help holding contradictory thoughts. First, we considered how lucky we are. We’re together, in our home, drinking a cold beer as we watch the sun set and feel the comfort of each other’s company. It was a moment of gratitude. However, it was also a moment of despair. How could it be that thousands of people were, from one moment to the next, through no fault of their own, left with nothing, while a single man became a trillionaire? According to the UN, the cost of the earthquake will be somewhere around 6.7 billion dollars. Elon Musk could finance that and barely make a dent in an annual Botox budget. And we call this “progress.”

The sliver lining

Although our current state of affairs is rather depressing, not all is lost. To regain some hope, we can return to football. For some reason, a video of an MLS game from back in 2024 reached my Substack feed this week. It showed heavy rain as the teams came onto the pitch. As is often the case, the players came out with a child walking next to them while holding hands. They then lined up at the center for the usual formalities: team presentation, anthem, pictures, and so on.

As the rain continued, one of the players noticed the child he had walked out with was getting soaked. Without giving it much thought, he unzipped his uniform jacket, took it off, and covered the kid. The player next to him in the formation saw the gesture and did the same with the child he had walked out with. Naturally, the rest of the players followed suit. It’s the video representation of human nature. If we see suffering, we try to help out. When others see the exemplary behavior, they follow, either by their own will or because of the power of peer pressure.

It says a lot about our ruling class that none of them have led by example in the aftermath of the Venezuelan seismic disaster. We’re not seeing the majority of the 0.1% selling their spare yacht, their sixth mansion in the Bahamas, or shares in the companies they own to help out people in need. We know this because the Forbes rankings aren’t changing. And because none of them are taking the lead and acting like a moral compass for good, their cohorts aren’t following. This is the leadership we have today.

If we understand this, there is only one conclusion we can reach. We must not look at the rich, successful, and powerful as exemplars of moral behavior. We should look at each other, for we help the family member in need. We’re the ones lending a hand to a neighbor in a pinch. We roll up our sleeves and build support networks for the survivors of an earthquake to help strangers thousands of miles away.

To those who have lost friends and family, this may be of little comfort, but considering the evening news, it might be the silver lining the rest of us need.

Una decisión difícil

No sería propio de WBT dejar pasar la oportunidad de publicar un texto que hable un poco de fútbol mientras se está jugando el Mundial 2026. Después de todo, el fútbol ha sido un leitmotiv de Writer by Technicality. El silencio sobre el tema es el resultado del boicot al torneo anunciado en La brecha Norte/Sur en el deporte. La persecución continua de inmigrantes en Estados Unidos, la guerra en Irán, el papel del país en el genocidio palestino y la intervención en Venezuela fueron factores considerados a la hora de decidir no ver el torneo.

Pero tendríamos que boicotear absolutamente todo si lo hiciéramos basándonos en decisiones políticas de algún gobierno con el que no estamos de acuerdo. Las razones para boicotear este torneo en particular también están directamente relacionadas con el fútbol. FIFA, una organización sospechada de prácticas fraudulentas desde hace décadas, decidió estafar abierta y descaradamente a los hinchas cobrando precios exorbitantes por las entradas. Como resultado, muchos fieles seguidores quedaron excluidos de la participación. A un nivel más personal, la asociación de fútbol del equipo que sigo también está envuelta en escándalos de corrupción. Además, integrantes de mi selección están patrocinados por sitios de apuestas, al mismo tiempo que el país al que representan atraviesa una crisis de apuestas infantiles.

A medida que se acercaba la fecha de inicio, sentía que el juego más popular del mundo era vaciada de diversión. Decidimos boicotearlo.

Verdaderos shocks

Aunque no estamos viendo los partidos, sí estamos siguiendo los resultados y, como siempre, hubo algunos shocks. Hasta que quedó ajustadamente eliminado por Argentina, Cabo Verde se ganó el corazón de todos. La nación insular, con una población de poco más de 500 mil habitantes, tuvo una de las actuaciones más admirables de la historia de los mundiales, enfrentando a tres campeones del mundo y sin perder contra ninguno de ellos dentro de los 90 minutos reglamentarios. Antes de quedar retratado como el villano por su estrategia creativa contra Francia, Paraguay se ganó admiradores al derrotar a Alemania en una de las mayores sorpresas de la historia reciente de los mundiales.

Sin embargo, el verdadero shock de la última semana no tiene nada que ver con el fútbol y es una tragedia humanitaria. Por supuesto, estamos hablando del terremoto que golpeó a Venezuela el 24 de junio. Aunque todavía no conocemos el alcance de la destrucción provocada por el poderoso doble sismo que impactó a unos pocos cientos de kilómetros de Caracas, sabemos que es grave. Muy grave.

Venezuela no la viene pasando bien últimamente. Un régimen político divisivo, la falta de representación democrática, la intervención extranjera tanto encubierta como abierta, una economía golpeada, la hiperinflación y un bloqueo comercial dejaron al país en un estado frágil. La situación desesperante llevó a una cuarta parte de la población a abandonar el país durante las últimas décadas. Y ahora esto: una devastación geológica de una magnitud pocas veces vista. Miles de personas murieron, muchos miles desaparecieron y muchísimas más perdieron absolutamente todo.

Frente al desastre, la humanidad hizo lo que la humanidad siempre hace. Aunque está lejos de ser suficiente, hubo una enorme demostración de solidaridad con el pueblo venezolano. Con ayuda financiera, alimentos, suministros médicos y donaciones, la gente del mundo hizo lo de siempre y les hizo saber a los venezolanos que no están solos. Por supuesto, nada de ese apoyo traerá de vuelta a los seres queridos ni restaurará algo parecido a la normalidad, pero en medio de la tragedia sí ofrece algo de alivio: para el pueblo venezolano y para quienes a veces perdemos la esperanza en la humanidad.

Maravillas del siglo XXI

Mientras algunos de los mejores atletas del mundo se reúnen en Norteamérica para jugar un poco de fútbol y el planeta tiembla en Sudamérica, hubo otra noticia que sacudió al mundo. El siglo XXI dio origen a algunas cosas maravillosas: la secuenciación del genoma humano, el control del VIH, el telescopio Webb, las telecomunicaciones móviles ubicuas y, por supuesto, la posibilidad de anunciarle al mundo que desayunamos una tostada con palta de 20 dólares. Nuestro invento más reciente y grandioso es el billonario.

Después de la salida a bolsa de SpaceX, Elon Musk se convirtió en el primer billonario de la historia. Algunos comentaristas y analistas denuncian este hito como otro símbolo más de un mundo cada vez más desigual, donde la riqueza está concentrada en manos de unos pocos. Eso es una visión cortoplacista. La llegada del primer billonario significa que el sistema financiero finalmente puede hacer lo suyo, y que todos esos pobres mil-millonarios podrán disfrutar de los beneficios de la economía del derrame. ¡Es un avance histórico!

Es deprimente, eso es lo que es. Al menos nos deprimió a mi pareja y a mí mientras tomábamos una cerveza en el balcón para aliviarnos un poco del calor. Con una cuarta parte del pueblo venezolano viviendo en el exterior, muchos de nosotros tenemos amigos, colegas, familiares y conocidos venezolanos. Dada la magnitud de los daños, todas esas personas que conocemos tienen amigos, colegas, familiares y conocidos que murieron, están desaparecidos o quedaron en la miseria. Es una tragedia con la que podemos identificarnos.

Mientras estábamos sentados juntos disfrutando de una tarde tranquila, no podíamos evitar sostener pensamientos contradictorios. Primero, pensamos en la suerte que tenemos. Estamos juntos, en nuestra casa, tomando una cerveza fría mientras vemos caer el sol y sentimos la bienestar de la compañía del otro. Era un momento de gratitud. Sin embargo, también era un momento de desesperación. ¿Cómo podía ser que miles de personas hubieran quedado, de un momento para el otro y sin tener culpa alguna, sin nada, mientras un solo hombre se convertía en billonario? Según la ONU, el costo del terremoto rondará los 6.700 millones de dólares. Elon Musk podría financiar eso y apenas hacer una pequeña mella en un presupuesto anual de Botox. Y a esto lo llamamos “progreso”.

El lado positivo

Aunque nuestro estado actual de las cosas es bastante deprimente, no todo está perdido. Para recuperar algo de esperanza, podemos volver al fútbol. Por alguna razón, esta semana apareció en mi feed de Substack un video de un partido de la MLS de allá por 2024. Mostraba una lluvia intensa mientras los equipos salían a la cancha. Como suele suceder, los jugadores salieron con un niño caminando a su lado, tomados de la mano. Luego se alinearon en el centro para las formalidades habituales: presentación de los equipos, himno, fotos y demás.

Mientras seguía lloviendo, uno de los jugadores notó que el chico con el que había salido estaba empapándose. Sin pensarlo demasiado, abrió la campera del uniforme, se la sacó y cubrió al chico. El jugador que estaba a su lado en la formación vio el gesto e hizo lo mismo con el niño con el que había salido. Naturalmente, el resto de los jugadores siguieron. Es una representación en video de la naturaleza humana. Si vemos sufrimiento, tratamos de ayudar. Cuando otros ven ese comportamiento ejemplar, lo siguen, ya sea por voluntad propia o por el poder de la presión social.

Dice mucho sobre nuestra clase dirigente que ninguno haya dado el ejemplo después del desastre sísmico venezolano. No estamos viendo a la mayoría del 0,1% vender su yate extra, su sexta mansión en las Bahamas o acciones de las empresas que poseen para ayudar a personas necesitadas. Lo sabemos porque el ranking de Forbes no está cambiando. Y como ninguno de ellos toma la iniciativa ni actúa como una brújula moral para el bien, sus pares tampoco los siguen. Este es el liderazgo que tenemos hoy.

Si entendemos esto, solo hay una conclusión posible. No debemos mirar a los ricos, exitosos y poderosos como ejemplos de comportamiento moral. Debemos mirarnos entre nosotros, porque somos nosotros quienes ayudamos al familiar que lo necesita. Somos nosotros quienes le damos una mano a un vecino en un momento difícil. Nosostros nos arremangamos y construimos redes de apoyo para los sobrevivientes de un terremoto con el objetivo de ayudar a desconocidos que están a miles de kilómetros.

Para quienes perdieron amigos y familiares, esto puede ser un consuelo menor, pero considerando las noticias de esta noche, quizás sea el lado positivo que el resto de nosotros necesita.

Around this time of the year—late June—the northern hemisphere is celebrating midsummer. In many parts of Europe, these are days of purifying fires that were appropriated by Christianity in the form of Saint John’s Day on the 24th of June. Where I live, the party involves lighting fireworks and firecrackers. Lots of them. It’s not a controlled burn; anyone with some cash can buy all the firepower they want and blaze the sky late into the night. Kids love it. Why wouldn’t they? It’s a chance to stay up late and make things go “boom!” For those of us who’d rather call it an early evening and go to bed without trembling pets, it’s a nerve-wracking and noisy affair.

We humans are a loud bunch. Besides firecrackers, from roaring cars and motorcycles to rumbling jet engines and helicopters, we interrupt the reverberations of our planet with noises of all sorts. Either with the sounds of industry and production, or with the booming frequencies of leisurely parties and concerts, we can’t escape our disruptive nature—we roam this planet much in the same way as a loud and unwelcome tourist visiting a new destination.

It’s not the first time I discuss our penchant for noise; it came up in WBT’s most recent post, Billy the Bucket Boy. This fixation, in its latest iteration, was triggered by ’s Quieting the Anthropocene Seas. Humans aren’t well equipped to have profound underwater conversations. Below sea level, our communication skills are limited to the handful of simple gestures we can learn during a five-minute scuba diving crash course. Other creatures don’t share our limitations.

As Jason mentions, “everything from plankton and corals to orcas and humpback whales rely on their acoustic perception.” Unfortunately, besides being pretty much deaf underwater, humans also lack self-awareness. Our planes, boats, submarines, jet skis, sonars—and even the pathetic doggy paddling I consider swimming and do every summer weekend at the beach—strain the innumerable subaquatic communication channels we’re oblivious to.

One channel in particular is whale song. With different moans, growls, whistles, pulses, and vocalizations, these great cetaceans can communicate with each other from many miles away. To hear these sounds sparks awe, amazement, and wonder. It’s a beautiful and astonishing sample of nature’s soundtrack that we continuously interrupt with our noise.

The awareness of how we’re destroying such beauty is heartbreaking. However, there is solace. Our species doesn’t only create noise; we also create music. This playlist is a tribute to humanity’s whale song.

In spite of everything we do and all our noise, the whale still moves with calm and grace, imparting lessons we refuse to learn.

Alrededor de esta época del año—fines de junio—el hemisferio norte celebra el solsticio de verano. En muchas partes de Europa, son días de fuegos purificadores que fueron apropiados por el cristianismo en la forma del Día de San Juan, el 24 de junio. Donde vivo, la fiesta implica encender fuegos artificiales y petardos. Muchos. No es una quema controlada; cualquiera con algo de plata puede comprar toda la pirotecnia que quiera e iluminar el cielo hasta altas horas de la noche. A los chicos les encanta. ¿Por qué no habría de ser así? Es una oportunidad para quedarse despiertos hasta tarde y hacer que cosas hagan “boom”. Para aquellos que preferiríamos cerrar el día temprano e irnos a dormir sin mascotas temblando, es un asunto ruidoso y desgastante.

Nosotros, los humanos, somos un grupo ruidoso. Además de los petardos, desde autos y motocicletas rugiendo hasta motores a propulsión y helicópteros retumbando, interrumpimos las reverberaciones de nuestro planeta con ruidos de todo tipo. Ya sea con los sonidos laborales de la industria y la producción, o con las ociosas frecuencias estruendosas de fiestas y conciertos, no podemos escapar de nuestra naturaleza disruptiva—recorremos este planeta de la misma manera que un turista ruidoso y no deseado que visita un nuevo destino.

No es la primera vez que hablo de nuestra inclinación por el ruido; apareció en el post más reciente de WBT, Juancho el chico del balde. Esta fijación, en su última versión, fue desencadenada por la lectura de Quieting the Anthropocene Seas, de . Los humanos no están bien preparados para tener conversaciones profundas bajo el agua. Bajo el nivel del mar, nuestras habilidades de comunicación se reducen a un puñado de gestos simples que podemos aprender en un curso intensivo de buceo de cinco minutos. Otras criaturas no comparten nuestras limitaciones.

Como menciona Jason, “todo, desde el plancton y los corales hasta las orcas y las ballenas jorobadas dependen de su percepción acústica.” Lamentablemente, además de ser prácticamente sordos bajo el agua, los humanos también carecemos de autoconciencia. Nuestros aviones, barcos, submarinos, motos de agua, sonares—e incluso el patético estilo de perrito que yo considero nadar y practico cada fin de semana de verano en la playa—tensan los innumerables canales de comunicación subacuáticos de los que no somos conscientes.

Un canal en particular es el canto de las ballenas. Con distintos gemidos, gruñidos, silbidos, pulsos y vocalizaciones, estos grandes cetáceos pueden comunicarse entre sí desde muchos kilómetros de distancia. Escuchar estos sonidos despierta asombro, admiración y maravilla. Es una muestra hermosa y asombrosa de la banda sonora de la naturaleza que interrumpimos constantemente con nuestro ruido.

La conciencia de que estamos destruyendo algo así es desgarradora. Sin embargo, hay consuelo. Nuestra especie no solo crea ruido; también crea música. Esta playlist es un tributo al canto de las ballenas de la humanidad.

A pesar de todo lo que hacemos y de todo nuestro ruido, la ballena sigue moviéndose con calma y gracia, impartiendo lecciones que nos negamos a aprender.
