recessions. And timing the market is for fools.”

Every banker learns those two sentences early, and most repeat them for the rest of their careers. They have the comfortable quality of all professional dogma: they excuse the speaker in advance. If recessions cannot be forecast, nobody can be blamed for missing one. If the market cannot be timed, nobody can be blamed for riding it to the bottom.

Let me concede the record first, because the record is real. The economics profession, as a group, has not forecast a single US recession in advance in the modern era. In 2007 the consensus saw no recession; one had already begun by December. In 2022 the consensus called a recession inevitable; it never came. Judged by the results of the people who have tried, the banker is right. Now look at the chart below before you read another word.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It is one public series laid against another, and it shows an economy that moves in cycles as plainly as a tide table.

In 2008 I asked myself a question I have never been able to let go of. If the cyclicality is this clear, how can nobody see it? The chart contains half of the answer. Job creation does not follow output; it moves with it. Employment is coincident with the real economy, not a lagging consequence of it. The profession believes the opposite, because it watches the unemployment rate, which does lag, and the monthly payroll print, which is noise. It has been reading the wrong clock for sixty years. That is the pattern everywhere: the industry does not lack indicators, it has too many, and it reads them one at a time, with no rule for which one has authority in which phase. And it reads liquidity as the engine of the whole machine, when it is nothing of the kind.

So the banker’s motto is true of the methods and false of the question. The economy is forecastable, because it is sequential. The market top is identifiable, because it arrives at a fixed place in that sequence and announces itself in a fixed set of ways. You just have to try harder than the industry has tried.

In 2008 I set myself one task: to break the macro code. To find the sequence, to find which indicator reads which phase, and to build a structure that would say, with a timestamp and before the fact, when the economy had turned and when the market was about to top. That work has taken eighteen years. The structure is the Zeberg Macro Navigation Framework, and this piece is its guide.

I am publishing it now for a reason. The framework’s leading signal fired at the end of 2024. Its recession signal fired in July 2026 and was documented publicly, with a timestamp, in the first week of that month. The stopwatches that run from that signal started in October. If the remaining conditions complete in the order the framework expects, I will call the recession - and, separately, the top of the greatest equity bubble in history - possibly as early as December. The timing is data dependent, and Part IV says exactly what that means. But the test is coming, and you will be able to watch it, condition by condition, and judge for yourself whether I broke the code or failed.

<picture></picture>

One warning belongs here. Before the top comes a rally. It will be powerful, it will take the indices well above today’s levels, and it will make investors euphoric. It is not an exception to the method. It is a stage of it. This article is the first of three: the Guide, which teaches the sequence, publishes the status of every signal as of today, and records in advance what must happen for each call and what would prove it wrong; the Call, written the day the final conditions complete, which will point to this document; and the Verdict, written when the outcome is known, whichever way it falls. Of course you can forecast recessions. You have to do it in a structured way, and you have to know what to look at. This is how.

PART I

The Code Exists, and It Begins with the Consumer

1. What really drives the economy

Economies move in a sequence, and the sequence does not change. What changes from cycle to cycle is the name of the trigger, the asset that becomes the bubble, and the vocabulary used to explain why this time is different. Beneath the vocabulary the order is always the same. That is the first governing rule of this framework.

The financial industry has its own version of the sequence, and it is wrong at the first step. It believes liquidity drives the economy: when money is created, the economy moves. It believes this because it watches the market, and the market does move when liquidity arrives. The industry then assumes the economy will follow. It does not. The real movement starts with a household looking at its monthly bills.

Here is the sequence as the framework reads it. The cost of money is the input: interest rates, and through them the monthly payment on a mortgage, a car, a credit card. The consumer is the engine: demand responds to the cost of money, through purchasing power and through psychology, and consumer demand is seventy percent of the economy. Production responds to demand. Inventories respond to production. Employment responds to the mismatch between the two. Wages respond to employment. Inflation responds to wages. And then the loop closes where it began, because employment and wages are the consumer’s income, and inflation and the policy rate that responds to it set the cost of money for the next turn.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Housing leads, because it is the consumer’s largest payment and the first thing that turns when that payment changes; that is why the leading layer of my framework is housing-based. Employment and output break together, because the labour market is the real economy measured as it happens; the job-creation trend has no lag, and it sits at the centre of my coincident index. And inflation comes last, the caboose of the train, still rising when the economy has already turned - which is why central banks, steering by inflation, are late by construction. If the sequence is fixed, forecasting stops being prediction and becomes reading a position. And because the sequence begins and ends with the consumer, the first thing to establish is the state of the consumer.

2. The consumer: where every business cycle begins and ends

Why the consumer, before anything else? Because the consumer is the economy. Personal consumption is 68-70% of US GDP. Business investment, government spending and net exports share the remaining third, and most of that follows the consumer too: companies build capacity to meet demand, and inventories exist to serve it. When 68 cents of every dollar of output is decided at the kitchen table, there is no such thing as a resilient economy with a weak consumer. There is only a lag between the consumer’s turn and the economy’s. That is why this section comes before the framework: every indicator the framework reads is, in the end, a measurement of the household’s purchasing power and its state of mind.

This is the framework’s central thesis, in two halves. Structural: the consumer, not liquidity, is the engine of the cycle, and the turn is decided by the household’s purchasing power and its psychology. Current: the US consumer today is weaker than at any point outside a severe recession, and weaker, on most comparable measures, than going into 1929.

Purchasing power and balance sheets. Real disposable income per capita is growing at 0.7% a year; going into 1929 it grew at 7.3%. Real spending per capita is growing at 2.0%, so the household is spending faster than its income grows, financed by savings and credit; in 1929 spending grew slower than income. Real wages were negative in the latest month. Consumer credit excluding mortgages stands at about 22% of disposable income, against 9 to 10% going into 1929. The share of families 60 or more days late on a payment has risen to 8.2% from 4.9% in 2022; card delinquencies are at Great Recession levels and subprime auto delinquency is at a record, with no recession declared. Essentials take 82% of spending in the bottom fifth of households and 76% in the middle fifth: for three fifths of the country there is almost nothing left to cut when the payment goes up.

The confidence curve. Now the psychology, which the industry’s liquidity model has no place for and which decides the timing of every turn. A household starts spending again when it sees its monthly bills and interest payments coming down. That is the mechanism. But how quickly it responds to that relief depends on how long it has been under pressure. A household squeezed for a year responds to the first rate cut within months. A household squeezed for five years does not believe the first improvement; it repairs its balance sheet before it spends. The position on the curve, not the size of the stimulus, sets the speed of the recovery. That is why money printing is not the engine: liquidity moves the market immediately, because the market is a professional buyer used to being fed, but it does not move the economy until the consumer feels his payments fall and is psychologically ready to act. In 2008-09 the Fed’s balance sheet tripled and consumer spending recovered at the slowest pace of any post-war recovery; in 2020-21 a consumer who had not been under pressure spent transfers within weeks.

The consumer of 2026 enters the downturn already far down the curve. Confidence is at the weakest level in the history of the series; job worries have risen to 42% of adults; the quit rate, which measures how confident workers are that another job is available, is half its 1929 level; and the household has been under pressure since 2022. When the policy response comes, it will take unusually long to reach consumption, because the relief will go to repair before it goes to spending. That is why I expect an extended crisis this time. The reason is not the size of the bubble or the size of the response. It is the position of the consumer when the cycle turns.

The two engines. There is one channel through which liquidity does reach consumption, and the industry mistakes it for the whole engine: asset prices. Each 10% move in US equities shifts household wealth by about 7.4 trillion dollars, worth about 0.9% of consumer spending a year. But the top 10% of households hold 88% of directly held equities and 62% of all net worth, while 17% of the bottom fifth own any stock. The wealth effect is an engine for 14 million households, and the final rally of this cycle is running it at full power. There are, in effect, two consumers running on two engines.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" The framework reads the distribution and sees an economy whose consumption is held up by the one engine tied to the price of the thing that is about to turn. That is not resilience. It is exposure. And when demand weakens at the bottom, the loop of Section 1 runs in reverse: production is cut, hiring stops before firing starts - which is the labour market today, a jobless boom with openings and the unemployed at one to one - then firing begins, wages follow, income falls, and the demand that started the loop weakens further. That is how a slowdown becomes a contraction, and it is why my coincident index is built on employment, production, income and output: those four are the loop, measured as it runs.

Weaker than 1929: the claim, made testable. I define consumer weakness on five dimensions so that no single number carries the claim: cash-flow stress, balance-sheet leverage, spending against income, labour security, and psychology. versus 2026 scorecard. Source: BEA, BLS, Federal Reserve, NBER Macrohistory Database, Brookings (1934); author’s compilation, data as of early October 2026; estimates marked. Full scorecard in Appendix C.

Across the full scorecard, 2026 is in the weaker position on 27 measures, 1929 on 5, with 4 showing no material difference. Honesty requires the other side: 1929 was weaker on five measures, including the share of households below a basic cost-of-living threshold, and several 1929 figures are directional estimates. The claim is that on the measures that decide the turn - whether income is growing, whether spending runs ahead of it, how much debt sits against it, and how confident the household is - today’s consumer is in the weaker position. What would weaken the claim: real income growth back above 2 to 3% with the saving rate rising, delinquencies turning down for two quarters, confidence recovering, real wages positive for six months. None of that has appeared.

3. What really drives the markets

Markets are tied to the economy by a specific structure. The real economy sets the direction: equities rise in expansions and fall in contractions. Liquidity sets the amplitude: the size of the move and the length of the overshoot, never the direction. And price completes in structures that repeat: a bull market in the modern record has not ended at a random point but in a terminal formation, after a final move faster and more vertical than anything before it. Those three statements are the three layers of the framework. The stock market is itself a leading component of the economy, which is precisely why it cannot be used to forecast itself. “The market is at all-time highs, so there is no recession coming.” “The market has fallen 25%, so the recession is here.” Both were said with confidence in the last twenty years, and both were wrong. The framework reads the economy first, liquidity second, and price structure last.

4. The same eight indicators, read by the profession in two eras, giving the opposite wrong answer each time. Source: author’s compilation of contemporaneous consensus commentary and published data.

In 2007 the eight clocks said all was well - GDP fine, unemployment at 4.4%, the Fed cutting, money growing, subprime “contained”, the S&P 500 at a record on record earnings - and the recession began in December. In 2022 the same eight said a recession was certain - two negative quarters, the deepest inversion since 1981, an ISM below 50, the first M2 contraction since the 1930s, a 25% fall in the S&P 500 - and it never came. Most of these are good indicators read wrongly. GDP is a report on the past. The unemployment rate lags, while the job-creation trend, at 105K and falling in 2007, was at the level where every post-war recession had begun. The yield curve’s inversion is not the signal; the un-inversion is. The Fed steers by inflation, the last variable to turn, so it is always easing into a recession that has begun and hiking into a slowdown already underway - as it did in September 2026. Spreads matter only once the real economy has broken. Two of the eight are bad indicators: the manufacturing PMI is a survey of moods, and M2 measures the quantity of money, not its price or availability; the 2022-23 contraction was the unwinding of pandemic deposits, a bookkeeping entry called a depression-grade signal. The fault that unites all eight is not in the data. It is in reading them ad hoc, with no rule for which clock reads which phase.

5. The same scoreboard, two outcomes: 2022 against 2007

What distinguished 2007 from 2022 was the consumer, read through a sequence of two gates nobody was watching. The first gate is the leading index. It fired in November 2006, as housing turned: the consumer’s first response to the cost of money. It did not fire in 2022: that consumer had a balance sheet rebuilt by transfers and excess savings, and real wages not yet eroded; the chronology stayed in Expansion. The second gate is the coincident index. It crossed in November 2007, after the leading signal, and established a Contraction. In 2022-23 the coincident index fell a long way from its post-pandemic peak, and anyone watching it alone might have called it a close approach. It was not. The first gate had not opened, so the second was not in play.

So 2022 was a slowdown in the conventional sense inside an Expansion in the framework’s sense; the scares resolved and the market went on to new highs. 2007 was a Contraction, and everything that flashed was a countdown. The same lesson is on every chart in Part IV with a coincident pane: spreads spiked in 2011 and 2016, bank credit dipped in 2023, bond volatility spiked in 2022-23, and nothing followed, because the leading gate had not opened.

<picture></picture>

Do not sell the inversion. The Zeberg Macro Navigation Framework: a three-layer system for navigating the business cycle, the liquidity regime, and the market targets. I call it the macro anchor, because nothing above it has any meaning until it has spoken. Layer 2 is the Liquidity Layer, the amplifier: it does not determine the direction of the economy, it amplifies the phase and the move, particularly in risk assets. Layer 3 is the Multi-Dimensional Elliott Wave Market Model, the calibrator: price targets consistent with the cycle position and the liquidity regime, across the dollar, bonds, equities, precious metals, crypto and commodities. It is the most creative layer, and the one that cannot stand alone.

<picture></picture>

I describe the three indices by what they measure and how they behave, not how they are constructed. The current read is a familiar late-cycle divergence: the real economy is stalling, yet equity markets continue to push higher. That gap rarely resolves quietly. It typically resolves through rotation - capital moving out of the broad index and into the assets that lead the final, most reflexive leg of the cycle.

The positioning reflects that thesis directly. We are in the ETH-Phase, and the central expectation is that ETH outperforms both BTC and the broad equity market into the closing stage of this advance. The Digital Asset Treasury equities - BMNR, Galaxy Digital, SBET, BTBT, ORBS - are the expression of that view in leveraged form: each is a geared play on ETH appreciation rather than a standalone equity bet. The concentration in SBET and Galaxy Digital makes the portfolio a high-conviction expression of the ETH thesis rather than a diversified book. UPXI provides Solana-side exposure on the expectation that SOL rallies in sequence, Marathon captures the BTC-miner beta that moves with the alt complex, and Microvision and Monday sit on top of explosive technical setups. On the crypto side, WIF reflects the standard cycle logic that memes move last, with LUNA held as a small speculative tail.

The two weeks since the last update have partially repaired the dispersion that defined late July. The portfolio is up roughly 1.9% in aggregate since the July 27th update, and the leadership has broadened rather than narrowed. Monday (+12.8%), ORBS (+11.1%), BMNR (+8.3%) and BTBT (+6.2%) led, SBET - the core position - added 4.6%, and UPXI gained 3.8%. The laggards were concentrated outside the ETH core: Marathon (-12.3%) and WIF (-8.7%) gave back, Galaxy Digital (-8.6%) continued to trade heavy against its own theme, and Microvision fell roughly 6% on a split-adjusted basis. The pattern is notable: the losses sit in the BTC-beta and meme sleeves, which by the cycle logic are not yet supposed to lead, while the ETH-geared names are firming.

Friday’s session extended that firming and looked closer to a block bid than anything since July 20th. BMNR (+2.8%), Galaxy Digital (+3.2%), SBET (+2.2%), UPXI (+4.7%), ORBS (+3.2%), Microvision (+3.8%) and Monday (+6.3%) all closed higher together, with Marathon (-5.3%) the only meaningful decliner. The qualification remains the same one as two weeks ago: ETH itself added only around 0.6% on the day to close near 1,913, so the leadership is still being generated on the equity side rather than by the underlying asset. This is an ETH thesis, and the DAT equities are geared expressions of it: until ETH itself moves, strength in the equities is positioning rather than confirmation. The difference from late July is that the positioning is now broad rather than rotational, which is what one would expect to see in the run-up to ignition.

ETH therefore remains the binding variable. At roughly 1,913 it trades far below the ~4,950 high of the past year and much nearer the ~1,507 low. The structure beneath the surface continues to improve at the margin: the 50-day average has risen to around 1,800 and continues to turn up, while the 200-day near 2,050 is still declining but flattening - the gap between the two has narrowed since the last update, though no cross has occurred. That is base-building, still not a completed reversal. The targets in the table are unchanged, and the distance between spot and those targets remains the dominant risk in the book. The Q3 window now leaves under two months for the sequence to begin, so each week of base-building consumes time the thesis does not have in abundance. The condition that would force a genuine reassessment is unchanged: not a weak week in the equities, but a failure of ETH to hold the base it has been building.
