Report a file system's block size and space, as statvfs gives them - #42
UnixNativeDispatcher.statvfs0 was a stub, and UnixFileSystem.getSpace0 returned 0. So every FileStore reported a block size, total, free and usable space of 0, and File.getTotalSpace(), getFreeSpace() and getUsableSpace() were 0. Direct I/O failed too: ExtendedOpenOption.DIRECT asks UnixFileDispatcherImpl.setDirect0 for the alignment, got -1, and buffers sized from it threw IllegalArgumentException: capacity < 0: (-1 < 0) in all four java/nio/channels/FileChannel/directio tests.
A VFS backend can report its file system's figures (space), as statvfs gives them. NodeBackend takes them from the host (fs.statfsSync). Backends without figures (memory, /files in the browser) report 4 KB blocks and no space, as Linux does for virtual file systems.
statvfs0 fills UnixFileStoreAttributes from that, as HotSpot does.
getSpace0 returns block size times total, free or available blocks, and 0 for a missing file, as HotSpot does.
setDirect0 returns the block size. Bytes go through the same buffers as before, so the alignment is all that changes.
Checks:
New program test test/java/FileStores.java compares block size, totals, File against FileStore, a missing file, and an aligned direct buffer with HotSpot.
The four directio tests (PreadDirect, PwriteDirect, ReadDirect, WriteDirect) pass and are added to passing.txt.
pnpm typecheck and pnpm test pass (145 tests).
java/nio/file/Files/InterruptCopy.java comes out of passing.txt. It skips itself unless the file store has 2 GB usable, so it only passed while java-web reported 0. Now it copies a 1 GB file, and java-web holds an open file's contents in memory, which goes over CI's 2 GB limit. It joins the large-file tests the sweep found (Transfer2GPlus, LoopingTruncate and others) that need files streamed to the host rather than buffered.
Noticed, not fixed:
java/nio/file/FileStore/Basic.java still fails: it compares against df, which needs a child process.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added filesystem capacity reporting, including block size and total, free, and available space.
Direct-I/O operations now use the filesystem’s reported block size.
Bug Fixes
Space queries for nonexistent paths now return zero or report that the path does not exist, instead of returning misleading capacity information.
The VFS now exposes filesystem space figures through an optional backend method. The Node backend obtains those figures from the host filesystem. Native I/O methods use the figures for file-store queries and direct-I/O alignment reporting. The changes also add a Java check program and update the passing-test list.
Changes: Filesystem space reporting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Space API and backend support src/fs.ts, src/node.ts
Space defines block size and block counts as bigint. VFS.space returns backend values or defaults, and NodeBackend.space returns host filesystem values or null if the query fails.
Native filesystem space methods src/natives/io.ts, src/natives/nio.ts
getSpace0 returns space values for existing paths and 0n for missing paths. statvfs0 fills file-store attributes or raises ENOENT. setDirect0 returns the path’s block size.
Java check program and test-list updates test/java/FileStores.java, test/jtreg/passing.txt
FileStores prints file-store values and a direct-buffer slice capacity. The passing-test list adds four direct-I/O tests and removes InterruptCopy.java.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 2d653
The change reports host block size and space to Java code and enables four direct I/O tests. One narrow edge case remains: direct I/O on a file opened with delete-on-close may check alignment against the root filesystem's block size instead of the file's. This only matters if mounts report different block sizes, so it is a small follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

This PR implements file system block size and space reporting via statvfs, fixing FileStore and File space methods that previously returned 0, and enabling direct I/O alignment. The VFS backend interface adds an optional space() method; NodeBackend implements it with fs.statfsSync. UnixNativeDispatcher.statvfs0 and UnixFileSystem.getSpace0 now populate UnixFileStoreAttributes and return block-size-scaled totals. setDirect0 returns the block size for direct buffer alignment. New test FileStores.java and four directio tests pass.

This PR implements statvfs support to report file system block size and space. Previously statvfs0 and getSpace0 were stubs returning 0, causing FileStore and File space methods to return 0 and direct I/O to fail with negative alignment. The changes add a Space interface, implement space() in VFS (defaulting to 4KB blocks for virtual file systems) and NodeBackend (using fs.statfsSync), wire up getSpace0 and statvfs0 natives to return block size and block counts, and make setDirect0 return the block size for direct I/O alignment. Four directio tests now pass and a new FileStores.java test validates the behavior. InterruptCopy.java is removed from passing tests because it requires 2GB usable space which exceeds CI's memory limit when java-web buffers files in memory.

The PR implements statvfs support so FileStore and File report real block size and space instead of zeros. A Space interface and optional Backend.space are added; VFS provides a 4 KB / zero-space fallback for virtual file systems. NodeBackend.space reads host figures via fs.statfsSync. UnixNativeDispatcher.statvfs0 and UnixFileSystem.getSpace0 now fill attributes and return block-size multiples, and setDirect0 returns the block size for direct I/O alignment. The four directio tests now pass and are added to passing.txt; InterruptCopy.java is removed because it now tries to copy a 1 GB file and exceeds CI memory. All typecheck and test runs pass.

This PR implements statvfs support so that FileStore reports the host file system's block size and space (total, free, usable) instead of zeros, and direct I/O gets the correct alignment. A Space interface is added to the VFS backend contract; NodeBackend implements it via fs.statfsSync, while other backends fall back to 4 KB blocks and no space. UnixNativeDispatcher.statvfs0 and UnixFileSystem.getSpace0 are wired to the new data, and UnixFileDispatcherImpl.setDirect0 returns the block size for direct I/O alignment. The four directio tests now pass and are added to passing.txt; InterruptCopy.java is removed because it needs 2 GB usable space and java-web buffers files in memory.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Support large files before advertising host space.
A caller can now see enough usable space to start a large operation, while open files remain buffered in memory. The pinned JDK’s InterruptCopy test takes this path when it sees 2 GiB free and creates a 1 GiB file. The PR reports that this exceeds the CI memory limit. Reopening that file also exceeds NodeBackend.read’s 512 MiB limit. Use bounded, host-backed file I/O so space checks do not enable operations the VFS cannot complete. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
