Summary

Publish replacement BaseException traceback, cause, context, and args values under their locks, then drop the replaced references after those locks are released. Old values can run Python finalizers that read or change the same exception attribute, which otherwise can reenter the held lock and deadlock.

Use the same safe paths for with_traceback() and BaseException reinitialization. Preserve setting __suppress_context__ before the new cause is published and before the old cause is dropped. Also drop a replaced traceback.tb_next chain outside its lock, after existing type and loop validation.

Validation

Scope

This does not claim to solve the pre-existing traceback-cycle validation race under concurrent link mutation. No Lib or test files were modified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Refactor
    • Updated internal handling of exception arguments, traceback, cause, and context, along with traceback chaining. These changes do not alter the behavior available to users.

Publish new exception state before releasing old Python references, so finalizers can safely reenter the same attribute.

Walkthrough

Traceback and exception field updates now retain replaced values until after releasing their locks. Exception argument updates and traceback updates use shared replacement methods.

Changes: Lock-safe value replacement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Replace fields and defer old-value drops
crates/vm/src/builtins/traceback.rs, crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs
Traceback links and exception fields retain replaced values until the relevant lock is released. The args setter, with_traceback, and PyBaseException::init use the replacement methods. set_cause continues to enable context suppression while holding the cause lock.

The changes avoid releasing replaced exception and traceback values while their locks are held. No merge-blocking defect is established; targeted reentrancy tests remain recommended, and native compilation and execution still require CI confirmation.

Explanation

The title "Drop replaced exception and traceback fields outside locks" matches the main change. The summary and objectives show that PyBaseException and PyTraceback replace traceback, cause, context, args, and tb_next values while holding locks, then drop the old values after unlocking. The title names the exception and traceback fields and the lock-related ordering, so it is specific and accurate. It is 58 characters and 8 words, which is concise.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files.

Nitpick Add a regression test for reentrant args replacement.

Add a regression test for reentrant args replacement.

set_args_tuple releases the args write lock before the old tuple is dropped. An old argument's finalizer can therefore read or set args on the same exception. The inspected snippets do not replace args from a finalizer, so no current test covers this path.

If the old tuple were dropped while the lock was held, the finalizer would block on the lock. That regression would hang instead of failing an assertion. A test for it would detect the regression only through a timeout.

Add a case to extra_tests/snippets/builtin_exceptions.py. Define an argument whose __del__ reads the exception's args and then assigns new args to that exception. Existing test lines and assertions do not need to change.

Add a regression case in builtin_exceptions.py for reentrant args replacement:
define an argument finalizer that reads its exception’s args and then assigns
new args to that exception. Exercise this while replacing the old args tuple,
and assert the observed behavior completes with the expected replacement,
without changing existing test lines or assertions.
Nitpick Add a reentrancy regression test for withtraceback() that is bounded by a timeout.

973-973: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Add a reentrancy regression test for with_traceback() that is bounded by a timeout.

with_traceback() now replaces the traceback through set_traceback(). That function drops the old traceback after the lock is released. No test in this repository replaces an existing traceback through with_traceback() while a finalizer reads __traceback__. Reverting to the locked assignment would therefore pass the current tests. A regression can block the thread that calls with_traceback() instead of failing an assertion.

Add the following to extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_traceback.py. That file already calls with_traceback():

import threading

current = []

class Probe:
    def __del__(self):
        # Reads the exception's traceback while the old chain is dropped.
        current[0].__traceback__

def fail():
    probe = Probe()
    raise ValueError("first")

def replace_traceback():
    try:
        fail()
    except ValueError as e:
        current.append(e)
    current[0].with_traceback(None)
    current.clear()

def run_bounded(func, timeout=10):
    errors = []

    def target():
        try:
            func()
        except BaseException as exc:
            errors.append(exc)

    worker = threading.Thread(target=target, daemon=True)
    worker.start()
    worker.join(timeout)
    assert not worker.is_alive(), "with_traceback() did not return"
    if errors:
        raise errors[0]

run_bounded(replace_traceback)

A separate thread alone does not bound the test. The join must use a timeout, and the test must fail while the worker is still alive.

Review comment at @crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs at line 973:
Add a bounded reentrancy regression test to the existing with_traceback()
coverage in the stdlib_traceback snippet: replace an exception’s existing
traceback while a finalizer reads __traceback__, run the operation in a worker
thread, and assert that a timeout-based join completes before proceeding. Ensure
the test fails if the worker remains alive.
Nitpick Add a snippet test for reinitializing an exception whose old args finalize.

999-999: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Add a snippet test for reinitializing an exception whose old args finalize.

BaseException.__init__ replaces args through set_args_tuple, which drops the old tuple after the write lock is released. No snippet in extra_tests/snippets covers this path with a finalizer that reads args. A future change that drops the old tuple while holding the lock would deadlock the finalizer, and no current test would fail. The hang would stall the snippet run until the CI job timeout. Add the snippet to extra_tests/snippets/builtin_exceptions.py.

Suggested test
class Reentrant:
    def __del__(self):
        holder[0].args # Reads args while the old tuple is released.

holder = []
e = BaseException(Reentrant())
holder.append(e)
e.__init__("new")
assert e.args == ("new",)

Review comment at @crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs at line 999:
Add a snippet test to the existing built-in exception tests that reinitializes a
BaseException while its old args contain an object whose finalizer reads the
exception’s args. Verify reinitialization completes and the new args are
correct, ensuring the old tuple is released without holding the lock needed by
that read.
Nitpick Add a regression test for tbnext replacement with a reentrant finalizer.

97-98: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Add a regression test for tb_next replacement with a reentrant finalizer.

The current setter releases the lock before it drops the old chain, so this is a coverage gap, not a current deadlock. No tracked test covers the regressed case. A change that drops the old chain under the lock would pass the suite.

The trigger is replacement. Dropping the previous chain can finalize a frame whose local object has a __del__ that reads or assigns tb_next on the traceback being replaced. In the regressed code, that read or assignment can deadlock on the held lock. An ordinary tb_next assignment inside a finalizer runs outside the setter's lock, so it does not exercise this path.

The test should make the replaced chain hold the last reference to a frame whose local __del__ reads or sets the same traceback's tb_next. Replace tb_next and assert the expected result. Bound the run with a timeout, so a reintroduced deadlock fails the test instead of hanging the run. Add the test to the most closely related existing file under extra_tests/snippets. Do not add it under Lib/test.

Review comment at @crates/vm/src/builtins/traceback.rs around lines 97 - 98:
Add a regression test for the tb_next setter’s replacement path, where dropping
the old chain finalizes a frame whose local object’s finalizer reads or assigns
tb_next on that same traceback. Ensure the replaced chain holds the frame’s last
reference, replace tb_next, and assert the expected result; bound the test with
a timeout so a deadlock fails rather than hanging. Place it in the most closely
related existing test file under extra_tests/snippets.
