Summary

Align ZoneInfo ownership, reconstruction and conversion controls with CPython 3.15 in 133 changed production Rust lines across four files.

  • Retain and traverse the exact file-repr string object, preserving lone surrogates, embedded NULs and string-subclass lifetime. Route string fallback through the shared lossless representation entry point.
  • Reconstruct cached objects through native cache construction without invoking subclass/metaclass construction hooks. Emit exact int cache flags in reduction.
  • Validate the unsigned-byte reconstruction flag with the native warning boundaries and release the converted temporary before cache callbacks, retaining the raw input through the operation.
  • Remove cache owners under the mutex but release them afterward, including strong-cache eviction/clear and a losing weak-cache initialization candidate. This permits weakref/destructor callbacks to reenter ZoneInfo safely.
  • Share unsigned-bitfield conversion with the existing socket option-length and epoll eventmask consumers, preserving their 32-bit ranges, masks, warning category, stack level and error propagation.

No Python, Lib, tests, expected-failure markers or workflows changed.

Reference and validation

Compared with pinned CPython commit d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc: ZoneInfo and integer conversion.

  • Bounded CPython oracles cover exact repr retention, surrogate/NUL output, subtype-hook bypass, reduction flag types, warning/error precedence and integer-temporary destruction before cache lookup. Clear and ninth-entry eviction probes reenter ZoneInfo.no_cache from weakref callbacks.
  • 88 bounded integer mask/size assertions across 8/16/32/64-bit boundaries, plus independent source review of helper range arithmetic and unchanged socket/select behavior. These are reference/source checks, not execution of RustPython.
  • Independent final source review, focused host-env/VM/stdlib threading cargo check, normal all-targets Clippy, formatting, diff checks and ordinary commit hooks passed. Four Clippy diagnostics match unchanged main exactly: one POSIX needless-collect and three ElementTree lints. No warning suppression; strict -D warnings remains blocked by that baseline.

Native RustPython execution, full workspace/C-API suites and cross-platform runtime checks were not run. Hosted CI remains required.

Integration notes

  • Preserve Unicode in shared qualified type names #9700 owns the qualified-name and key-repr migration. Source composition must retain this PR's PyStrRef file branch and Preserve Unicode in shared qualified type names #9700's lossless key/cache-mismatch formatting. Both use the corrected shared repr caller. The existing lossy key-repr behavior is not independently changed here.
  • Align socket receive and control argument binding #9668 owns socket raw-argument binding. Its composition must convert the raw option-length object inside its existing match arm before calling the shared helper, preserving its original argument retention and conversion order.
  • Source compositions and explicit conflict resolutions were reviewed; combined peer trees were not compiled. Older layout migrations may need textual reconciliation.

AI-assisted implementation and independent review using OpenAI Codex; model version is not exposed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of integer values used for socket options and event masks, with deprecation warnings for values outside supported ranges.
    • Preserved original text in time zone file representations, including characters that were previously converted lossily.
    • Improved time zone caching and serialization behavior, including handling of cache flags when restoring serialized values.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The changes add unsigned bitfield conversion for integer arguments and use it in epoll, socket, and ZoneInfo pickle reconstruction. They also update ZoneInfo cache operations and preserve file representations as Python strings using WTF-8.

Changes: Integer conversion and ZoneInfo

Layer / File(s) Summary
Unsigned bitfield conversion
crates/vm/src/function/number.rs, crates/stdlib/src/select.rs, crates/stdlib/src/socket.rs
ArgIndex gains unsigned bitfield conversion with a range check and deprecation warning. Epoll masks and socket lengths use this conversion.
ZoneInfo pickle reconstruction
crates/stdlib/src/_zoneinfo.rs
Pickle reduction encodes the cache flag as an integer. Unpickling parses it as an unsigned 8-bit index and uses cached_new for cached reconstruction.
ZoneInfo cache and file representation
crates/stdlib/src/_zoneinfo.rs
Strong-cache operations detach entries under lock and drop them after unlocking. ZoneInfo retains file representations as Python string references and uses WTF-8 for representation output.

Explanation

The title clearly identifies the main ZoneInfo changes: ownership handling and reconstruction controls. It is concise and accurately reflects the primary changes, although it does not mention the related integer conversion updates.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 10.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 10 functions across 4 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Accept signed epoll masks in register like modify does.

register converts eventmask with OptionalArg<u32>, which rejects negative integers with ValueError. modify converts the same kind of value through epoll_eventmask, which masks it to 32 bits. Use the same conversion in register. CPython 3.15 declares unsigned_int(bitwise=True) for both methods.

crates/stdlib/src/_zoneinfo.rs:1237
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Convert the key repr without to_string_lossy().

The keyed branch still replaces lone surrogates in the key's __repr__ output with U+FFFD. The file branch in the same method keeps its exact WTF-8 content, so the two branches now differ.

Suggested fix

-            let key = zelf.key.repr(vm)?.to_string_lossy().into_owned();
-            Ok(format!("{name}(key={key})").into())

+            Ok(wtf8_concat!(name, "(key=", key.as_wtf8(), ")"))
