dist/node.js is one 20,000-line bundle that Node compiles on every start. Node's compile cache keeps that compiled code between runs, but it only covers modules loaded after module.enableCompileCache() runs, so the bundle cannot turn it on for itself.

The java-web command now runs dist/cli.js, a five-line launcher that scripts/build-web.ts writes. It turns on the compile cache, then imports node.js and calls its main, which is now exported. The cache goes where Node puts it by default: NODE_COMPILE_CACHE if set, else node-compile-cache in the system temp directory. Node keys it on its version and the file contents, so a new release or Node version just compiles once more. NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1 turns it off.

Running node dist/node.js directly, and importing runNode or startLibrary from it, work as before.

Measured with dist/node.js -cp . Hello restored from a boot snapshot, median of 10 runs alternating on a small ARM board:

Entry Median
node dist/node.js 562 ms
node dist/cli.js 524 ms

Checks:

  • test/image.test.ts runs a program through both dist/node.js and dist/cli.js and compares each with HotSpot.
  • pnpm typecheck and pnpm test pass (138 tests).

AGENTS.md and docs/browser.md list cli.js among the package files, and package.json adds it to files and points bin at it.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a dedicated java-web command-line launcher to the published package.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Verified that both the Node.js entry point and the new launcher produce output and exit statuses consistent with HotSpot.
  • Documentation
    • Updated package-file documentation to list the launcher separately and identify it as the java-web command.

The package now publishes dist/cli.js as the java-web executable. The launcher optionally enables Node’s compile cache, imports node.js, and calls exported main with CLI arguments. Documentation and tests now include the separate command entry.

A rabbit packs a launcher tight,
It calls main and hops by night.
The cache may warm before the run,
Two entries race beside the sun.
HotSpot checks each step they take,
Then carrots wait beside the rake.

This PR introduces a launcher script (dist/cli.js) that enables Node's compile cache before importing the main node.js bundle, improving startup performance. The java-web bin entry now points to cli.js, which calls the newly exported main() from node.js. Tests verify both entry points produce identical output to HotSpot. Documentation and package configuration are updated accordingly.

This PR adds a launcher script (dist/cli.js) that enables Node's compile cache before loading the main node.js bundle, improving startup performance. The java-web bin entry now points to cli.js, which calls enableCompileCache() then imports and runs node.js's exported main function. Tests verify both entry points produce identical output to HotSpot.

The PR adds a launcher script (dist/cli.js) that enables Node's compile cache before importing the main bundle (dist/node.js), improving startup time. The java-web command now runs through cli.js instead of node.js directly. The main function is exported from node.ts, package.json bin entry and files list are updated, and tests verify both entry points produce identical output to HotSpot.

Run the build before the HotSpot comparison test in CI.

The new dist/cli.js check in test/image.test.ts runs only when dist/node.js exists. pnpm test does not build, and .github/workflows/test.yml runs pnpm test before pnpm build. On a fresh checkout, the test skips both entries. The java-web launcher behavior added by this PR is then not checked in that workflow.

This gap also exists for the existing dist/node.js check. The PR does not create it. Reordering the two CI steps runs the comparison for both entries. Do not change the skip gate alone. A gate on both files still skips on a fresh checkout.

Suggested fix
- - run: pnpm test
- - run: pnpm build
+ - run: pnpm build
+ - run: pnpm test
