The npm package shipped only the browser files, so running Java under Node needed a source checkout. This adds a Node entry to the package.

  • pnpm build bundles src/node.ts into dist/node.js (ESM, with a shebang). package.json exports it as "." and as the java-web command, and lists it in files. Node does not strip types from .ts files under node_modules, so the package needs the bundle rather than the sources.
  • src/image.ts adds ImageBackend, a read-only VFS backend over the packaged image on disk: it reads boot.pack's index and packed files, and every other file at its offset in jdk/<module>.jar, the same layout pages read over HTTP. With localeData it adds jdk/jdk.localedata.txt's index. The index listing it shares with HttpBackend moved to listIndex in src/browser/http.ts.
  • runNode uses the packaged image when it runs as dist/node.js (a boot.pack sits next to it) and no jdk option is given; from a source checkout it still uses build/jdk.
  • TypeScript declarations ship as dist/node.d.ts (written in types/node.d.ts), behind a types condition on the root export. test/node-types.ts makes pnpm typecheck fail when they drift from src/node.ts.
  • The script check follows symlinks, so the command also runs through npm's node_modules/.bin link.
  • Docs: a short "Use it under Node" section in the README and docs/node.md with the command's options and runNode's.
  • CI and the release workflow run test/image.test.ts after pnpm build.

Closes #2.

Tests:

  • test/image.test.ts: ImageBackend on a small hand-made pack (index, packed files, ranges inside module images, listing, locale data); dist/node.js running a program as HotSpot does; runNode imported from dist/node.js running the javac test on the packaged image. The last two skip until dist/ is built.
  • npm pack, installed in an empty directory: npx java-web -cp DIR Hello and import { runNode } from "java-web" both run, and --locale-data formats Locale.GERMANY numbers as 1.234,50 (without it, 1,234.50).
  • A strict ESM TypeScript project that installs the packed tarball typechecks against the declarations, and rejects an unknown option.
  • The browser self test (dist/selftest/) in headless Chromium: 26 of 26 steps pass.
  • pnpm typecheck; pnpm test: 103 pass, 0 fail.

… the java-web command, reading the packaged JDK image

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Node.js support for running Java applications from a classpath or JAR using the java-web command, or from JavaScript with runNode.
    • Added library-mode VM controls, including the ability to start and stop a VM.
    • The published package now includes a Node.js entry point and a packaged JDK image for Node use.
  • Documentation
    • Added Node.js setup and usage guidance, including supported options and the Node.js 23.6+ requirement.

The package adds a Node entry and java-web command. The Node runtime can read the packaged JDK image. The PR also adds usage documentation and runs image tests in CI and before publishing.

Changes: Node package entry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Read the packaged JDK image
src/browser/http.ts, src/image.ts, test/image.test.ts
ImageBackend reads indexed files from packed data or module JARs and lists indexed directories. Tests cover path metadata, reads, ranges, and the localedata overlay.
Select the image for Node execution
src/node.ts, test/image.test.ts
nodeVm mounts ImageBackend when boot.pack is beside the module and no explicit JDK is set. The script-entry check compares real paths. Tests compare Node execution with HotSpot.
Build, publish, and document the Node entry
scripts/build-web.ts, package.json, README.md, docs/node.md, docs/browser.md, AGENTS.md, .github/workflows/*
The build creates dist/node.js. Package metadata exports it, registers java-web, and includes it in published files. Documentation describes Node usage. CI and release workflows run the image tests after building.

The Node entry works through its normal execution path. Direct callers of the exported image backend can read past a file's end into the next file, which is worth tightening. TypeScript users with strict settings will need a local module declaration until types are published. Neither issue blocks merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2 requires a built Node entry, a runNode export, a CLI, Node 23.6+ support, and use of packaged image files. package.json exports ./dist/node.js, registers java-web, includes dist/node.js, dist/boot.pack, and module JARs, and sets engines.node to >=23.6. src/node.ts exports runNode, mounts ImageBackend for the packaged image, and retains source-checkout fallback behavior. src/image.ts reads boot.pack and per-module JAR offsets. The reported image tests and package-install checks cover the CLI, import, packaged execution, and locale data.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to Issue #2. The workflow updates build and test the Node entry before release. The image backend, tests, documentation, package metadata, and symlink handling support the packaged Node entry and CLI.

The Node entry opens the gate,
JARs and classes answer straight.
Tests compare each printed line,

This PR adds a Node entry point to the npm package so Java can run under Node without a source checkout. It introduces ImageBackend to read the packaged JDK image (boot.pack + module JARs) from disk, wires it into runNode when dist/node.js is executed, exports the binary as java-web, and adds tests and docs. The CI workflows now run the new image tests against the built dist.

This PR adds a Node entry point (dist/node.js) to the npm package, enabling npx java-web and import { runNode } from 'java-web' without a source checkout. It introduces ImageBackend to read the packaged JDK image (boot.pack + jdk/*.jar), updates the CLI to detect and use the packaged image when running from dist/, and adds tests and CI steps. Three clear defects exist in the diff: a file descriptor leak in ImageBackend, a try-catch that doesn't catch promise rejections in the CLI main, and a fragile packaged-image detection that doesn't validate the jdk/ directory.

This PR adds a Node entry point to the npm package so Java can run under Node without a source checkout. It introduces src/image.ts with ImageBackend to read the packaged JDK image (boot.pack + jdk/*.jar) from disk, updates src/node.ts to detect and use this packaged image when running as dist/node.js, adds the node.js bundle to package.json exports and bin, updates build scripts, CI, and documentation. Tests cover ImageBackend behavior and verify dist/node.js matches HotSpot output.

The PR adds a Node entry point to the npm package by bundling src/node.ts into dist/node.js with a shebang, exporting it as the package root and as the java-web binary. It introduces ImageBackend to read the packaged JDK image (boot.pack + jdk/*.jar) from disk, reuses the pack index listing logic via listIndex in http.ts, and ships TypeScript declarations as dist/node.d.ts with a typecheck test to keep them in sync. CI now runs the new image tests against the built dist. The implementation correctly detects the packaged image when dist/node.js sits next to boot.pack, falls back to build/jdk in a source checkout, and handles errors cleanly. No defects found in the diff.
