Run on a jlinked image-mode JDK instead of the exploded layout - #37
build/jdk was an exploded image: modules/<module>/... with no lib/modules, so the JDK ran in exploded mode. Two costs came with that. At boot, the module system scanned every module directory, which was most of boot. And the first use of jrt:/ (javac's file manager) made ExplodedImage walk all 21,000 files of the image, about a quarter of javac's first compile.
This switches to a normal image-mode java.home, as a jlinked JDK has.
Image.scripts/build-jdk.sh extracts Temurin's x64 lib/modules, undoes the changes jlink's plugins made to java.base (scripts/UndoJlink.java, from the diff_java.base record jlink keeps), adds javaweb.tls, and runs jlink with the same module list. The modules go into jmods first (fixed timestamps, so two builds give the same image), and java.base.jmod records the hashes of the modules Temurin's java.base hashes. The JDK uses those hashes to leave its own module versions out of stack traces. The result is uncompressed and keeps debug info, so stack traces keep line numbers. build/jdk has lib/modules and no modules/ or lib/resources.jimage. jlink regenerates SystemModules for exactly this module set, so boot takes the JDK's fast path.
Boot class loader.src/jimage.ts keeps only the image index (1.2 MB) and reads each class by offset, looked up with the JDK's perfect hash. Under Node, the image file stays open once per process, not once per class. The JDK's own ImageReader gets jdk.image.map.all=false and jdk.image.use.jvm.map=false, so it maps only the index and reads each resource with one positional read. NativeImageBuffer.getNativeMap returns null. File mappings are page aligned. Stack frames carry their module's version, as HotSpot sets it.
Locale data stays opt-in, and --add-modules naming jdk.localedata or ALL-SYSTEM turns it on, as such a run on HotSpot resolves every module. In image mode the module list is part of java.base, so without localeData the VM sets jdk.module.limitmods to every module but jdk.localedata, as --limit-modules does. Turning it on saves about 0.5 s of boot but adds about 1 s to the first formatting call on a small ARM board, and snapshots remove the boot cost. Snapshot keys include it.
dist. The java.home files ship as one jdk/image.jar, read by range. The build records the byte ranges of lib/modules that a typical start reads and packs them into boot.pack (@<offset>:<path> entries). It packs the ranges javac adds into jdk/javac.pack, which boot.pack lists so a page fetches it the first time it needs one of them. jdk/jdk.localedata.txt and the per-module index blocks are gone, since nothing is left for them to index.

pnpm typecheck and pnpm test pass (143 tests). New tests cover jimage lookups and misses, a class from a module other than java.base, listing a module through jrt:/, locale formatting with and without locale data (matching HotSpot with and without --limit-modules), snapshots keyed on it, page-aligned mappings, and packed image ranges.
CI runs all 3,435 OpenJDK tests in passing.txt on the new image. The first run found three failures, fixed here: stack frame module versions (StackTraceElement/ModuleFrames.java), and two DateFormat tests that timed out after the runner started passing --locale-data (it no longer does).
The browser self-test passes every step, javac included, on a fresh and on a reused profile.
jrt:/ reads class files now, matching HotSpot. docs/support.md no longer says it cannot.
Noticed, not fixed:
javac's peak memory under Node is about 20 MB higher in image mode, with a lot of variation between runs. The cause is not known yet.
The image digest is built on the host. A build on x64 and one on aarch64 were not compared byte for byte.

New Features
JDK images can now be read using byte-range requests, with startup and compiler data fetched in separate groups.
Locale data can be enabled through JVM options; when omitted, the jdk.localedata module is excluded from the boot configuration.
Documentation
Updated setup and support guides to describe the JDK image layout, browser download behavior, and locale-data options.
The build now creates a linked JDK image and packages JDK files in one ranged image. Runtime backends read packed ranges or image bytes, and the JVM loads classes from JImage when available. Locale-data handling and native memory alignment are also updated.
The build restores module contents, derives hashes, links selected modules, copies lib/modules, and writes lib/packages.txt. The resource-image script is removed. The layout documentation describes the linked image.
Create the image and range packs scripts/build-web.ts, package.json, docs/browser.md, AGENTS.md
The build records and merges read spans, writes JDK files to jdk/image.jar, and creates boot and javac range packs. The package list and documentation describe the image and packs.
Read image data through range-capable backends src/browser/http.ts, src/browser/worker.ts, src/fs.ts, src/image.ts, src/node.ts, test/image.test.ts, test/java/JrtUrls.java, test/bridge.test.ts, docs/node.md, AGENTS.md
Backends expose range-read capability and read packed ranges or image-file ranges. The browser HTTP backend parses and merges lazy range packs. Tests cover image reads and packed-range boundaries.
Load classes and configure locale data src/jimage.ts, src/jvm.ts, src/natives/lang.ts, src/browser/worker.ts, src/node.ts, test/jimage.test.ts, test/programs.test.ts, test/locales/Locales.java, test/snapshot.test.ts, docs/support.md, AGENTS.md
JImage reads uncompressed resources from a linked image, and the JVM uses it for boot classes when available. Locale-data configuration, module limits, and related tests and documentation are updated.
Native allocation accepts an alignment value, and mapped regions request 4096-byte alignment. Image-map lookup returns null, with two image-map properties set to false.

A rabbit packs the image tight, Then hops through ranges, left and right. Boot files wait in packs nearby, JImage finds the bytes to try. Aligned paws land just so, Locale blooms when settings say go.
Reuse one open file descriptor for jdk/image.jar reads in the packaged ImageBackend.
The PR objectives describe a single open image file per Node process. NodeBackend does this through imageFd. The packaged ImageBackend does not. Every readRange call that misses the packed data runs fs.openSync and fs.closeSync again.
Under dist/node.js, every boot class that is not in boot.pack triggers this open and close. The same applies to every class that jdk/javac.pack does not cover. This repeats syscalls on the hot class-loading path. The reported timings may only reflect the build/jdk path.
Move the imageFds cache into a module that both src/node.ts and src/image.ts can import. Use that cache here for image.jar. Do not reuse imageFd from src/node.ts directly, because src/node.ts already imports src/image.ts.

This PR switches the JDK image from an exploded layout to a jlinked image-mode layout with lib/modules. The build now extracts Temurin's lib/modules, undoes jlink's java.base modifications, adds javaweb.tls, and relinks with jlink. The runtime reads the jimage index via a new JImage class, and the browser distribution packages everything into a single jdk/image.jar with range requests. Boot and javac performance improve significantly. However, the JImage implementation has critical bugs in jimage header parsing and hash computation that would break class/resource loading.

On the review of 76d65a7: the jimage header and hash in src/jimage.ts follow the JDK reader.
Header (jdk.internal.jimage.ImageHeader): seven u32 words, so 28 bytes. The table length is at byte 16, and the locations and strings sizes are at 20 and 24. The redirect and offsets tables are tableLength entries each, so locations start at 28 + tableLength * 8. Values are little endian, as the x64 image is written.
Hash (ImageStringsReader.hashCode): seed 0x01000193, then seed = seed * 0x01000193 ^ byte over the modified UTF-8 bytes, masked with 0x7fffffff, modulo tableLength. A negative redirect is the slot -1 - value, a positive one is the second seed, and zero is absent. The location found is checked against the full name before use.
The tests read real classes through it (java/lang/Object from java.base, javax/xml/XMLConstants from java.xml, and a missing name returning null). Every boot class in pnpm test and in 805 OpenJDK tests comes through it. The files the bot could not read are being reviewed separately, and findings will be posted here.
CI on 76d65a7 ran all 3,435 OpenJDK tests on the new image. Three failed, now fixed:
java/lang/StackTraceElement/ModuleFrames.java: in image mode the test expects getModuleVersion() on a java.base frame, and java-web set no version for the JDK's own modules. Frames now get every module's version, as java_lang_StackTraceElement::fill_in does. toString then printed java.base@25.0.5/..., because the JDK hides versions only for modules whose hashes java.base records (StackTraceElement.HashedModules), and the build had dropped those hashes. The build now puts the modules in jmods with fixed timestamps, and java.base.jmod records hashes for the modules Temurin's java.base hashes (scripts/HashedModules.java, jmod --hash-modules), before jlink. Frames now print as on HotSpot. The three StackTraceElement tests pass, and two builds give the same image.sha256.
java/text/Format/DateFormat/Bug8141243.java and SimpleDateFormatPatternTest.java timed out. They walk every available locale, and the runner had started passing --locale-data. The tests in passing.txt were qualified without it, so the runner no longer passes it.
The review of the files the bot skipped found no code defects. In tests: the locale test now checks that both HotSpot reference runs succeed (cde93e1). test/jimage.test.ts needing build/jdk was left as is, since every test does (pnpm jdk first, per AGENTS.md).

This PR switches the JDK image from an exploded layout to a jlinked image-mode layout with lib/modules. It adds JImage for reading jimage files, rewrites the build script to use jlink with proper module hashes, changes the pack format to use a single image.jar with range requests, and updates the JVM to load classes from the jimage. The changes are extensive and largely correct, but the JImage.read() implementation has two deviations from the JDK's jimage hash algorithm that will cause resource lookups to fail when hash redirects are present.
Not approved: the diff of src/natives/misc.ts, src/node.ts, test/image.test.ts, test/java/JrtUrls.java, test/jimage.test.ts, test/locales/Locales.java, test/memory.test.ts, test/programs.test.ts, test/snapshot.test.ts was too large to read.
review-bot, model nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b:free, verdict comment
On the review of 239e72e and the jimage hash: checked against every resource in the image. A new test (test/jimage.test.ts, "jimage reads every resource the jimage tool lists", in the next push) runs the JDK's own jimage list --verbose on build/jdk/lib/modules and reads each listed resource through JImage.read. All 21,530 come back at their listed size. 6,067 of the 23,166 redirect slots hold a positive value (a second hash seed), so the redirect path is covered many times over. If there is a specific input you expect to fail, please name it.
The files the bot could not read were reviewed separately (comment above).
CI on 239e72e: 7 of 8 shards passed. Shard 2 had two regressions:
java/lang/Class/getDeclaredField/FieldSetAccessibleTest.java runs with --add-modules=ALL-SYSTEM and loads every class jrt:/ lists. In image mode jrt:/ lists jdk.localedata, which the VM was leaving out of the boot layer whenever locale data was off, so its classes would not load. On HotSpot, --add-modules=ALL-SYSTEM (or naming jdk.localedata) without --limit-modules resolves every module, so java-web now keeps locale data in that case too (src/jvm.ts, documented in docs/support.md). The locale test checks ALL-SYSTEM against HotSpot, and FieldSetAccessibleTest passes locally.
java/math/BigInteger/BitLengthOverflow.java timed out after printing its expected line. It passes locally in seconds and took 2.4 s on earlier CI runs, so this looks like a one-off. The new run will show whether it recurs.
This push also adds the test that reads every resource the JDK's jimage list reports through JImage.read (all 21,530 at their sizes).

This PR switches the JDK image from an exploded layout to a jlinked image-mode JDK with lib/modules. It adds a JImage reader for the jimage format, changes the browser pack format to use range reads from a single image.jar, and moves locale data opt-in to jdk.module.limitmods. The changes are extensive across build scripts, JVM, browser backend, and memory allocator.

This returns false for every path except /lib/modules (since the boot pack index contains /lib/modules). The VFS uses canReadRange to decide whether to call readRange; returning false forces a full-file read via read() for all other image files, defeating range requests in the browser. It should return true for any path that has packed ranges or lazy ranges, or at minimum for paths where offsets exist.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Right, fixed in cbe5e00. HttpBackend and ImageBackend are read-only, so ranged reads are safe for any file, as on master. The restriction to /lib/modules now stays only in NodeBackend, where a writable host file must keep its buffered contents. With this the browser self-test's cold page load makes 145 requests (20.2 MB) instead of 168 (22.0 MB), and every step still passes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The diff at head still shows HttpBackend.canReadRange returning !this.pack.index?.has("/lib/modules") || path === "/lib/modules", which is false for almost all paths. The reply claims this was fixed in cbe5e00 by moving the restriction to NodeBackend, but the current head does not reflect that fix, HttpBackend.canReadRange still blocks range reads for packed/lazy ranges and offset-based reads that readRange actually supports. The method should return true for any path that has packed ranges (pack.ranges.has(path)), lazy ranges (pack.lazyRanges.has(path)), or an offset entry (pack.offsets.has(path)).

That reply was made against 6e14366. The change is in cbe5e00, now the head: src/browser/http.ts and src/image.ts no longer define canReadRange, so VFS.canReadRange falls back to true for both, as on master. Only NodeBackend keeps its own canReadRange.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The diff at head still shows HttpBackend.canReadRange returning !this.pack.index?.has("/lib/modules") || path === "/lib/modules", which is false for nearly all paths. The claim that cbe5e00 removed this method from HttpBackend and ImageBackend is not reflected in the current head, the method is present in the diff (added at line 279 of src/browser/http.ts). Since HttpBackend implements readRange for packed ranges, lazy ranges, and offset-based reads, canReadRange should return true for any path where those exist (i.e., pack.ranges.has(path) || pack.lazyRanges.has(path) || pack.offsets.has(path)), or the method should be removed entirely so VFS.canReadRange falls back to true via the readRange check. The fix has not been applied.

This thread is anchored to 6e14366 (the commit before the change). GitHub's file list for this PR at the current head no longer has canReadRange in src/browser/http.ts or src/image.ts (gh api repos/Project516/java-web/pulls/37/files).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The diff at head shows HttpBackend.canReadRange was added in this PR (line 279, marked with +), returning !this.pack.index?.has("/lib/modules") || path === "/lib/modules". This returns false for nearly all paths, blocking range reads that readRange actually supports (packed ranges, lazy ranges, offset-based reads). The author claims cbe5e00 removed this method, but the current head diff clearly includes it. The fix has not been applied: either remove canReadRange from HttpBackend so VFS.canReadRange falls back to true via the readRange check, or make it return true for paths with pack.ranges, pack.lazyRanges, or pack.offsets entries.

This PR switches the JDK image from an exploded layout to a jlinked image-mode JDK with lib/modules. The build now extracts Temurin's modules, undoes jlink's java.base modifications, adds javaweb.tls, and relinks with jlink into a single uncompressed jimage. The runtime reads classes via a new JImage class that keeps only the index in memory and reads each class by offset. The browser pack format changes to a single jdk/image.jar with range entries in boot.pack and javac.pack. Locale data is now controlled via jdk.module.limitmods. Tests pass including 3,435 OpenJDK tests.

build/jdkwas an exploded image:modules/<module>/...with nolib/modules, so the JDK ran in exploded mode. Two costs came with that. At boot, the module system scanned every module directory, which was most of boot. And the first use ofjrt:/(javac's file manager) madeExplodedImagewalk all 21,000 files of the image, about a quarter of javac's first compile. This switches to a normal image-mode java.home, as a jlinked JDK has.
Image.
scripts/build-jdk.shextracts Temurin's x64lib/modules, undoes the changes jlink's plugins made tojava.base(scripts/UndoJlink.java, from thediff_java.baserecord jlink keeps), addsjavaweb.tls, and runsjlinkwith the same module list. The modules go into jmods first (fixed timestamps, so two builds give the same image), andjava.base.jmodrecords the hashes of the modules Temurin'sjava.basehashes. The JDK uses those hashes to leave its own module versions out of stack traces. The result is uncompressed and keeps debug info, so stack traces keep line numbers.build/jdkhaslib/modulesand nomodules/orlib/resources.jimage. jlink regeneratesSystemModulesfor exactly this module set, so boot takes the JDK's fast path.Boot class loader.
src/jimage.tskeeps only the image index (1.2 MB) and reads each class by offset, looked up with the JDK's perfect hash. Under Node, the image file stays open once per process, not once per class. The JDK's ownImageReadergetsjdk.image.map.all=falseandjdk.image.use.jvm.map=false, so it maps only the index and reads each resource with one positional read.NativeImageBuffer.getNativeMapreturns null. File mappings are page aligned. Stack frames carry their module's version, as HotSpot sets it.Locale data stays opt-in, and
--add-modulesnamingjdk.localedataorALL-SYSTEMturns it on, as such a run on HotSpot resolves every module. In image mode the module list is part ofjava.base, so withoutlocaleDatathe VM setsjdk.module.limitmodsto every module butjdk.localedata, as--limit-modulesdoes. Turning it on saves about 0.5 s of boot but adds about 1 s to the first formatting call on a small ARM board, and snapshots remove the boot cost. Snapshot keys include it.dist. The java.home files ship as one
jdk/image.jar, read by range. The build records the byte ranges oflib/modulesthat a typical start reads and packs them intoboot.pack(@<offset>:<path>entries). It packs the ranges javac adds intojdk/javac.pack, whichboot.packlists so a page fetches it the first time it needs one of them.jdk/jdk.localedata.txtand the per-module index blocks are gone, since nothing is left for them to index.Measured on a small ARM board:
dist/node.js(Terra's runs, median of 3)Checks:
pnpm typecheckandpnpm testpass (143 tests). New tests cover jimage lookups and misses, a class from a module other thanjava.base, listing a module throughjrt:/, locale formatting with and without locale data (matching HotSpot with and without--limit-modules), snapshots keyed on it, page-aligned mappings, and packed image ranges.passing.txton the new image. The first run found three failures, fixed here: stack frame module versions (StackTraceElement/ModuleFrames.java), and twoDateFormattests that timed out after the runner started passing--locale-data(it no longer does).jrt:/reads class files now, matching HotSpot. docs/support.md no longer says it cannot.Noticed, not fixed:
