Generate __str__ and __repr__ slots with #[pymethod] - #6485
Motivation: we have too many fragmented traits, which are easy to forget to add in with() attrs.
Now __str__ will more looking like a normal #[pymethod]. But what it backs will be very different. It actually doesn't create a real pymethod, but actually creating slot_str. And __str__ will be placed by a slot-wrapper descriptor.
After the patch, #[pymethod] fn __str__ will additionally create a pyslot for str.
This can be applicable to other single-method traits too.
Pros: Easy to understand. No worry to forget to add with()
Cons: Confusing because it have different semantics comparing to other real pymethods.
Rebase completion
Extended native slot generation to both #[pymethod] __str__ and #[pymethod] __repr__, with native argument/result conversion, aliases, cfgs, trait composition and coexist handling. Removed the Representable trait and migrated its implementations across VM builtins, standard-library modules and WASM. Infallible repr methods now return their string values directly; fallible methods, recursion guards and WTF-8 handling are preserved.
Runtime regressions are in Python extra_tests, not synthetic Rust VM classes. They verify actual slot-wrapper descriptors, implicit dispatch, inheritance, instance shadowing, class overrides/deletion, recursion and error propagation. The production bytes and bytearray str methods also use the macro.
Rebased onto main 7e49b843 with conflict resolutions preserving current main behavior. Validation on commit 577dcb1fcc: 31 derive expansion tests and 36 selected Python checks passed (including the str/repr slot snippets on RustPython and CPython). Strict Clippy and normal commit hooks passed. The native build enabled stdlib, stdio, threading, host_env, doc and ucd_3_2_0. The pre-rebase workspace/C-API test builds were stopped for conflict resolution and did not complete. Full-suite and hosted cross-platform checks remain pending; this is not a full-suite pass.
Rebase completion, implementation and regression tests were assisted by OpenAI Codex (model version not exposed).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Native __repr__ methods are now directly accessible and overridable as Python methods across built-in and standard-library types.
Native __str__ methods support direct calls and Python’s str() dispatch, including inherited behavior and class-level overrides.
Bug Fixes
Invalid return values from native __str__ methods now raise a TypeError.
Improved bytes and bytearray string conversion while preserving existing warnings and representations.
Tests
Added coverage for representation and string-conversion methods, overrides, inheritance, recursive values, and invalid arguments.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
This change registers qualifying __str__ and __repr__ methods as native type slots. It also replaces the Representable trait with Python methods across VM built-ins and standard-library types, and adds tests for descriptor behavior, slot dispatch, overrides, recursion, and errors.

Summary
Generate slots from instance methods crates/derive-impl/src/pyclass.rs
Non-coexisting #[pymethod] implementations of __str__ and __repr__ register the matching type slot rather than a method-table entry. The generated wrapper converts native arguments and results and raises a type error if the result is not a string. Raw methods are directed to #[pyslot]; classmethods, staticmethods, and coexist methods remain method-table entries.
Move VM built-in representations to methods crates/vm/src/builtins/*, crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs, crates/vm/src/lazy_import.rs
VM built-ins replace Representable implementations with Python __repr__ methods. bytes and bytearray also define __str__ methods.
Move standard-library representations to methods crates/stdlib/src/*, crates/vm/src/stdlib/*, crates/wasm/src/js_module.rs
Standard-library types replace Representable implementations with Python __repr__ methods while retaining their described representation logic.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 577dc
The change moves representation methods onto native slots. Explicit docstrings on __str__ and __repr__ are likely lost, and one earlier review concern on the class registration code is still open. No concrete failure of existing behavior was found, so the risk is low, but full test and CI results are still pending.

Here are my concerns:
Will this lead to implementation difference with CPython where an entire CPython test suite will not be applicable? (so we will have to maintain our own)
I ain't so sure why __str__ was chosen for this PR while other dunder methods like __repr__ were not for example. This concern can be addressed with a detailed comment about this change
Will this lead to implementation difference with CPython where an entire CPython test suite will not be applicable? (so we will have to maintain our own)
No, this is a sort of developer interface. CPython test suites test the implementation. It doesn't matter if we use a trait or fake pymethod.
I ain't so sure why __str__ was chosen for this PR while other dunder methods like __repr__ were not for example. This concern can be addressed with a detailed comment about this change
Because this form is an alternative form of the trait approach, which is already implmemented for __repr__. If we use same approach for repr, then trait Representable will be replaced by #[pymethod] fn __repr__. So if we go this way, __repr__ will look like __str__ without trait Representable
I think it's a good idea to allow direct implementation unless protocols like Mapping or Sequence need to be implemented. Even from an AI (LLM) perspective, just implementing #[pymethod] fn __str__ seems less prone to mistakes.
There might be something like this, though. If you want to program at the Rust-level to only accept types that implement hash as input, like T: Hashable, traits would still be advantageous. However, I haven't done Rust-level extension programming with PyO3 or similar, so this is nothing more than a guess.
It feels a bit awkward to write #[pymethod] and have it automatically treated like #[pyslot] after previously distinguishing between #[pymethod] and #[pyslot], but I think everyone would expect __str__ written at the Rust-level to be a slot_str rather than wanting it to be treated as a built-in method or function.

Preserve explicit __str__ docstrings on slot wrappers.
When a non-coexisting #[pymethod] defines __str__, the early return discards its Rust docstring. Introspection can expose generic or stored documentation instead. Pass the explicit docstring to the wrapper and give it precedence.
As per coding guidelines, “A /// doc comment on a Python-exposed item … is that item's docstring and overrides the stored docs.”
