Summary

Follow up on #9679 by replacing the remaining native type-name identity decisions:

  • Restrict OSError errno dispatch and builtin set repr selection to the actual builtin types.
  • Compare ctypes simple bases by identity, so a subclass named _SimpleCData cannot change repr or OUT conversion.
  • Replace the HRESULT name heuristic with cached _check_retval_ semantics and the HRESULT calling-convention flag. Preserve checker snapshot/fallback rules and allocate simple-subclass results without invoking Python constructors.
  • Check actual inheritance in the initializer debug diagnostic instead of counting names in exception text.
  • Register COMError's native initializer so Python subclasses and explicit super().__init__ calls retain its argument and attribute-assignment behavior.

Python regressions cover spoofed names, renaming, checker mutation, callable lookup errors, native result construction, and Windows HRESULT cases. No Lib synchronization files or existing test assertions are changed; no Python behavior tests are added in Rust.

The audit retained textual names used for diagnostics, serialization, capsule/JavaScript protocols, and existing test labels. Mirrored upstream Lib conventions are outside these native runtime fixes.

Validation

  • Rebased on main 0abb21ac2b, including Handle fallible filesystem decoding in Windows console IO #9728. All six original commits were unchanged by range-diff.

  • The COMError constructor passed metadata compilation and a release-mode RustPython probe in an isolated Linux checkout with only its platform gate temporarily opened. Verified subclass assignment events, direct and super() initialization, receiver checks, arity, heap/immutable flags, name and docstring. The published source remains Windows-only; actual Windows CI for the updated head is pending.

  • Final VM and test-target compilation passed.

  • Six RustPython snippet tests passed through pytest: builtin exceptions/set and ctypes, calls, by-value and from-buffer cases.

  • Canonical test_exception_hierarchy, test_set, and test_ctypes.test_repr passed (662 tests run; one case skipped). test_ctypes.test_checkretval and test_ctypes.test_functions were skipped because _ctypes_test is unavailable locally.

  • New focused cases also passed CPython. Normal commit hooks, formatting, and whitespace checks passed.

  • C-API tests passed: 129 passed, 4 ignored; doc tests passed. Full-workspace validation remains incomplete: after resolving the missing-libffi link locally, optimized VM unit-test compilation received SIGKILL.

  • Strict Clippy is blocked by existing unrelated lints (including posix.rs needless collection); no new lint remains in the changed code. Windows execution is not available locally.

AI assistance: OpenAI Codex performed the audit, implementation, reference probes, tests, and independent source review; model version was not exposed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Set subclasses now display their class name in representations, even when it matches the built-in set name or changes at runtime. Built-in sets retain their usual representation.
    • OSError subclasses with names matching OSError now preserve their own type when constructed.
    • Improved ctypes callback metadata handling, restype validation and updates, and return-value conversion for custom types.
    • Windows ctypes calls now handle COM interface identifiers and provide improved error formatting and COM error details.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for set and OSError subclass behavior, ctypes callbacks and return values, and Windows error handling.

Walkthrough

The pull request updates type-identity checks for set representations and OSError construction. It changes ctypes function-pointer metadata, return conversion, and Windows COM error handling. It also updates an initializer debug assertion and adds regression tests.

Changes: Set representation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set representation identity
crates/vm/src/builtins/set.rs, extra_tests/snippets/builtin_set.py
Representation logic distinguishes the built-in set type from subclasses by type identity. Tests cover subclasses named or renamed to set and confirm the built-in representation.

OSError type identity

Layer / File(s) Summary
OSError constructor identity
crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs, extra_tests/snippets/builtin_exceptions.py
The built-in fast path checks whether the class is the built-in OSError type. Tests cover same-named subclasses.

ctypes result handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Function-pointer metadata
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/base.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py
StgInfo stores, traces, and clears argument types, result types, and checkers. Function types and instances initialize and update this metadata. Tests cover callback metadata and restype updates.
Result metadata and conversion
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/simple.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/base.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py
Call setup snapshots instance and class metadata. Result conversion applies checkers and distinguishes direct simple types from subclasses. Tests cover checker caching and result conversion.
Windows HRESULT and COM errors
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes.rs, crates/host_env/src/ctypes.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py
Windows calls pass COM pointers into result handling. Applicable COM failures can include native error details. FormatError, COMError, and related tests are updated.

Initializer assertion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Initializer failure assertion
crates/vm/src/types/slot.rs
The debug assertion on conversion failure checks whether the object is an instance of the type. The conversion error is still returned.

crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs:1674-1676
Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Stop calling user constructors when materializing Structure and POINTER native results.

A native Structure or Union restype is built with PyType::call. That call runs the subclass __new__ and __init__ after the native call returns. If __init__ requires arguments, the call raises TypeError and the foreign call's result is lost. The POINTER branch calls the class with no arguments before setting the pointer. Build these results without invoking Python constructors, as the simple-subclass branch does.

crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs:1766-1768
Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Check HRESULT results when restype is None or a pointer.

When FUNCFLAG_HRESULT is set on Windows, the HRESULT check runs only for CallValue::Scalar results. A None restype produces CallValue::Void, and the call returns None without checking the native return. A pointer restype bypasses the check the same way. The flag is meant to request HRESULT checking, so these configurations can return a failed HRESULT as a normal result.

This path existed before this change. The change moves the trigger from the restype name to the flag, but the Scalar-only condition is unchanged.

Add a test for reassigning restype during an active call.

test_callback_replaces_checker changes Checked._check_retval_ inside the callback. It does not reassign function.restype, and no test in this file reassigns restype during a native call. A regression that reads the function's checker after the native call would pass the current tests. The suggested test covers that path.

Give callables with no class-local _restype_ the same default as the caller: C int.

A subclass without its own _restype_ now builds a void callback thunk when it is constructed from a callable. Calling that instance reads an int result, but the callback never writes one. Callers receive an unspecified integer instead of the Python return value.

Read restype and checker as one coherent snapshot for each call.

extract_call_info reads restype and then checker in separate reads. set_restype writes checker before it writes restype. A call that reads between those writes can pair the old restype with the new checker. build_result then applies the new checker to a result converted with the old type. That call can raise an exception or return a wrong conversion.

Keep each call's snapshot of restype and checker coherent. Keep the existing setter write order. The finalizer regression tests require the old restype to stay visible while the old checker is finalized.

Keep argument buffers alive for c_char_p and c_wchar_p subclass results.

The PyCSimple subclass branch in convert_raw_result passes objects as None for z and Z. The argument keep owners remain in the local arguments vector in PyCFuncPtr::call, and build_result does not receive them. If the native function returns a pointer into a z or Z argument buffer, that buffer is freed when call returns. Reading .value on the result then reads freed memory. The removed scalar path copied the string before the owners were dropped, and this branch does not.

Pass the argument keep owners into build_result. Store them in the result wrapper's objects slot, together with any py_object owner the call already retains. Copying the string into a Python bytes object does not fix this. That copy is not a c_char_p subclass instance, and the wrapper would still need an owner for the buffer its pointer uses.

the class-level signature from cached StgInfo.argtypes instead of the live
_argtypes_ attribute, keeping ordinary calls and callbacks consistent when the
attribute is rebound.

Minor · Only call GetErrorInfo when InterfaceSupportsErrorInfo returns S_OK. · ctypes.rs:3852-3858

crates/host_env/src/ctypes.rs:3852-3858
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Only call GetErrorInfo when InterfaceSupportsErrorInfo returns S_OK.

The status check at this site only returns early for negative values. An S_FALSE result, which means the object does not support IErrorInfo for this IID, still reaches GetErrorInfo. That call can take unrelated or stale thread error information and attach it to the raised COMError. The Windows contract allows GetErrorInfo only after S_OK. Gate on success equal to zero, which covers S_OK and rejects S_FALSE and failure codes.

Suggested fix

-    if status < 0 {
+    if status != 0 { // S_OK
         return details;

Review comment at @crates/host_env/src/ctypes.rs around lines 3852 - 3858:
Update the status check after the SupportsErrorInfo call to return unless the
result is exactly S_OK (zero). This ensures GetErrorInfo is reached only when
the interface reports support for the IID.

Use exact types for OSError dispatch, set representation and ctypes simple bases. Replace the HRESULT name heuristic with cached return-checker semantics and use real inheritance for initializer diagnostics. Add Python regressions for spoofed names, renaming, checker caching and native result allocation.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-not-exposed
Use the primary simple base, class-local restype metadata, and sequential checker replacement with reentrant operation exclusion. Cover the corresponding Python behavior in existing snippets.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-not-exposed
Match deletion finalizer order and restore class metadata. Use native HRESULT errors, retrieve COM error details with explicit resource ownership, preserve mutable IID behavior, and match COMError and FormatError semantics.

Retire the COM IID expected-failure marker through update_lib without changing assertions. Linux build, six snippets, 17 focused parity cases, 250 concurrent setter rounds, and canonical tests pass. Windows behavior is source-reviewed and native-helper mock checked, but not executed on Windows.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-not-exposed
Reject missing callback argtypes as CPython does. Keep absent restype distinct from explicit None and reject it safely; CPython 3.15 crashes in this case, so this guard is intentionally not claimed as runtime parity. Preserve independent call snapshots and borrowed pointer-result ownership matching CPython.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-not-exposed
Match CPython class metadata fallback in call preparation and the argtypes getter. Extend existing callback metadata regressions to native-address instances, missing class-local metadata, and instance override reset.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-not-exposed
Fix Windows E0603 by using the canonical builtins re-export. The same slot_init expression was checked with an external metadata-only Rust probe; behavior is unchanged.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-not-exposed
Define COMError through the native exception macros so its initializer has a wrapper descriptor inherited by Python subclasses. Preserve the heap and immutable flags, public docstring, exact arity, attribute assignment order, and final BaseException args.
