Consolidate the related thread, select-family, and SimpleQueue timeout fixes in this PR. The full commit histories from #9663 and #9641 are preserved alongside the latest #9652 join-wait fix.
Use the VM's shared signed pytime conversion for seconds and milliseconds, with __index__ before __float__, checked nanosecond bounds, and consistent NaN/overflow handling. Remove SimpleQueue's duplicate converter.
Preserve each API's policy for None, negative values, nonblocking calls, and indefinite waits. SimpleQueue deliberately uses ceiling rounding; thread and select APIs use away-from-zero rounding.
Keep Lock/RLock raw argument binding, callback order, rounded indefinite sentinel, native wait bounds, and checked durations. Keep thread joins within native wait slices without resetting the total timeout budget.
Keep select/poll/epoll/kqueue descriptor conversion and callback ordering, monotonic retry budgets, checked platform times, poll event bits, and Linux/Android ppoll precision.
Keep SimpleQueue's nonblocking permit consumption and atomic publication of items with permits, plus its truth-testing and timeout validation fixes.
Preserve all existing Rust tests and the integer daemon value in thread audit events. The existing update_lib-generated audit marker removal is retained; no test assertions, logic, or data were changed during consolidation.
The interpreter-queue binding refactor in #9729 and socket binding work in #9668 remain separate. This branch composes cleanly with #9563 at 832f9bb454; the shared Clinic fix is not included here.
A bounded 211-case CPython 3.15.0 comparison had 209 exact matches. The two remaining differences are the existing excess-argument versus unexpected-keyword diagnostics in queue/lock binding, within the scope of the separate shared binder work in Enforce Clinic binding by default #9563. Conversion values, exception types, callback order, rounding, and sentinels matched.
The channel regression module was skipped because it requires a GIL-enabled interpreter; this is not runtime channel coverage.
Full workspace/C-API tests and strict Clippy are still in progress. Exact-head hosted CI remains pending. Cross-platform kqueue, Windows, and 32-bit runtime behavior has not been locally validated.
AI assistance: OpenAI Codex assisted consolidation, source review, and validation. The model version is not exposed. Original commits and attribution are preserved, and new commits include an Assisted-by trailer.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved timeout handling for thread locks, thread joins, and channel waits. Timeout values are rounded consistently, and negative values or values beyond supported limits are rejected.
Nonblocking lock calls now validate timeout values consistently, with conversion errors reported before nonblocking timeout restrictions.
Thread lock acquisition and join operations now handle indefinite waits consistently, and long join waits continue reliably across supported wait intervals.
Queue and polling operations now handle timeout values more consistently, including correct rounding and platform-limit checks.
Polling results preserve the complete event mask, and modifying an unregistered poll descriptor now reports an OS error.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Shared nanosecond timeout conversion and platform wait limits now support updates to thread, queue, select, and interpreter-channel timeout handling. Select-related APIs also update descriptor conversion, argument handling, and wait retries.
pytime is public and provides scaled seconds and milliseconds conversion, rounding, and thread-timeout limit checks. A boundary test covers the platform maximum and overflow.
Host poll timeout support crates/host_env/src/select.rs
Unix helpers convert durations and signed microseconds to timeval. PollTimeout stores platform-specific timeout values, and poll_fds_with_timeout uses ppoll on Linux and Android.
Thread and channel timeouts crates/vm/src/stdlib/_thread.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_interpchannels.rs
Lock acquisition and thread joins use shared timeout conversion and limits. Join waits use capped slices and track elapsed time. Interpreter-channel timeouts use upward-rounded nanoseconds. The joinable-thread audit event records daemon as an integer.
Queue arguments and waits crates/stdlib/src/_queue.rs
Queue methods accept arbitrary blocking arguments. get converts timeout objects to nanoseconds, and queue item removal occurs after releasing the semaphore lock.
Select, poll, epoll, and kqueue crates/stdlib/src/select.rs
Select interfaces use Fildes for descriptor conversion and shared timeout helpers. Timeout handling uses checked monotonic deadlines, and poll waits use PollTimeout. Argument conversion and several error and event-mask behaviors also change.
RustPython/RustPython#9563: Changes the shared FromArgs binding validation contract used by Lock and RLock argument binding.

Convert float timeouts before checking the index protocol
When timeout is a float subclass defining __index__, this new call selects that method because from_seconds_object checks is_index() before recognizing a PyFloat. The previous TimeoutSeconds conversion instead read the float payload. For example, a Seconds(float) subclass whose __index__ returns -1 makes lock.acquire(timeout=Seconds(0.0)) wait indefinitely on an already-held non-reentrant lock instead of returning False: the zero timeout becomes the indefinite-wait sentinel. Handle float instances and subclasses before the index protocol in the shared converter so the new Lock/RLock and channel callers preserve float semantics.
Add a channel timeout test that depends on __index__ before __float__.
send and send_buffer convert timeout through parse_timeout, which calls pytime::from_seconds_object. That function checks for an index before it calls __float__. The existing channel timeout case passes the int 0, which both conversion orders accept. No inspected channel test passes an object whose __index__ and __float__ give different results. Reverting this call site to float-first would therefore leave the inspected channel timeout tests passing.
Add a blocking send to an unreceived channel, using an object whose __index__ returns 0 and whose __float__ raises. It should raise TimeoutError. A float-first conversion would raise the exception from __float__ instead.

Review comment at @crates/vm/src/stdlib/_interpchannels.rs at line 1117:
Add a channel timeout test covering conversion order in the channel tests: use a
timeout object whose __index__ returns 0 and whose __float__ raises, then call
channels.send on an unreceived channel and assert it raises TimeoutError. This
ensures the test detects a float-first conversion without changing the existing
pytime::from_seconds_object behavior.

Share native thread wait limits with the PyTime conversion helpers. Normalize channel and join timeouts with signed nanosecond precision, native index/float precedence, checked bounds, and timeout rounding. Preserve each API-specific None, negative, and nonblocking policy. Add generic conversion and boundary coverage without snippet tests.

Bind raw lock arguments with FromArgs before callbacks, use Python truthiness and the shared PyTime conversion, and retain converted arguments throughout acquisition.
