Align LRU cache keys and callback controls - #9681
Match LRU constructor keyword names and conversion order, scalar-key distinctions, and copy-method arity through shared binders and converters.
Move bounded hits without replacing stored keys or repeating equality callbacks.
Keep cache clearing, recursive insertion and eviction consistent under reentrant equality and finalizers.
Add two narrow dictionary operations using existing entry revalidation, leaving unrelated get/pop callers unchanged.
The helper changes address stale reads or removals when equality clears and repopulates a dictionary position. Failed insertion releases the newly computed result before the evicted key/result, matching CPython.
Independent source review and 13 bounded CPython 3.15 reference groups cover conversion, scalar keys, recursion, equality reentry, eviction and finalizer order.
Formatting and whitespace checks passed.
Final focused VM, host-env and stdlib check and strict Clippy with rustpython-stdlib/threading passed after removing the obsolete deletion wrapper and a redundant clone. Normal repository hooks passed.
RustPython runtime, full workspace/C-API suites and cross-platform execution were not run. No test, Lib, workflow or marker edits.
Rebased on main 702ffe77a4, preserving the shared ArgIntoBool and Callee imports and main's legacy argument binder while retaining deferred maxsize conversion. The redundant formatting-only commit was dropped. Independent source review, repository hooks and whitespace checks passed; local runtime validation of the rebased head and hosted CI are pending.
AI assistance: OpenAI Codex performed source comparison, implementation, reference probes and independent source review; model version was not exposed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved LRU cache handling of recursive calls, including safely rechecking entries and processing cache clearing or eviction during callbacks.
Bounded-cache hits now update entry order; unbounded-cache hits do not change ordering.
Clearing the cache removes its contents while retaining the cache object and resetting its statistics.
Cache construction validates the callable before converting the size limit; negative limits are treated as zero.
Cache keys use a scalar for a single exact integer or string argument when no keywords are provided and typed keys are disabled.
Copy and deep-copy operations now accept positional arguments.
The LRU cache wrapper now stores entries in a direct dictionary and uses reentrant dictionary operations. The changes cover cache key construction, constructor argument conversion, and bounded and unbounded cache lookup and update behavior.
Added reentrant dictionary lookup and removal operations. Removed del_item_known_hash.
Cache construction and key handling crates/vm/src/stdlib/_functools.rs
Changed constructor argument conversion and cache storage. A single exact int or str argument can serve as the key when typed is false and there are no keywords. Updated cache information, clearing, and copy methods.
Cache lookup and miss handling crates/vm/src/stdlib/_functools.rs
Bounded-cache hits update recency. On misses, bounded caches recheck for recursively inserted keys and handle eviction candidates removed by callbacks. Unbounded caches insert the computed result.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 093d7
The LRU cache changes are mostly sound. Three narrow edge cases remain open: the cache can briefly exceed its size limit when equality callbacks reenter, an evicted entry can be mismatched in the same situation, and lookups slow down when many keys share a hash. Resolve or explicitly accept these before merge, and run the runtime tests on the rebased head.

Avoid quadratic witness revalidation on unbounded get hits.
The unbounded get path in _functools.rs now calls get_reentrant. That path runs through with_slot_mut_prepared, which rechecks the accumulated probe witnesses after each false key_eq. Keys that share one full hash and compare unequal can therefore cost about n²/2 witness checks per lookup for n keys in one probe chain. The previous unbounded route, get_item_known_hash → _get_inner → lookup_extract, resumed the probe without this rescan.
A plain linear probe is not a safe replacement. It would remove the revalidation that protects against equality callbacks clearing and repopulating slots, which the witness scheme exists to handle. A correction needs to keep that protection while limiting rechecks to witnesses changed since their last validation. That mechanism is not established by the inspected code, so no patch is proposed.

Remove and retain the entry that pop_reentrant actually removed.
When an equality callback clears the cache and inserts an equal replacement, pop_reentrant removes that replacement. The code still retains the original oldest_key/oldest_value. The replacement is dropped before the new entry is inserted. Its finalizer can then insert an entry, and the cache can end up at maxsize + 1.
Have pop_reentrant return the removed key and value, and keep that pair in evicted. Callers of pop_reentrant need checking before the signature changes.

Enforce maxsize after reentrant insertion, and add a regression test for it.
The bounded path pops the oldest entry before set_item_known_hash. Equality on a colliding key can call the cached function during that insert. The nested call sees room and inserts, so the outer insert can leave maxsize + 1 entries. No existing test checks currsize in this window.
