Stream pickle collection batches like CPython - #9691
Serialize live list, dict, and set entries so reducers observe later replacements and mutations.
Share incremental list/dict iterator batching, including protocol-0 ordering, two-item binary lookahead, tuple validation, and cleanup order.
Use reduced iterators directly without another __iter__ call, and select batching by protocol rather than the writable bin flag.
Preserve singleton fast paths and detect set size changes. Stop exhausted native cursors instead of emitting empty batches indefinitely after same-size compaction.
Independent source review passed, including callback ordering, object lifetimes, lock release, and native cursor exhaustion.
Bounded CPython 3.15 reference probes passed for protocol/batch boundaries, writable bin, mutation visibility, iterator errors, and finalizer ordering.
Final focused cargo check --offline --locked -j1 -p rustpython-host_env -p rustpython-vm -p rustpython-stdlib --features rustpython-stdlib/threading passed, as did normal commit hooks and formatting checks.
Focused all-targets Clippy completed with four warnings reproduced on unchanged main: needless_collect in posix.rs and two use_self/one uninlined_format_args in elementtree.rs. The changed code adds no remaining warning; strict -D warnings is blocked by this baseline. No warnings were suppressed and unrelated code was not changed.
RustPython runtime, full workspace/C-API suites, and cross-platform execution were not run. No tests, Lib files, markers, or workflows changed.
Same-size structural mutations remain dependent on the container's native iteration order. This change does not promise CPython's hash-table layout or redesign pickle memo/configuration state.
AI assistance: OpenAI Codex performed source comparison, implementation, reference probes, and independent source review; model version was not exposed.

Bug Fixes
Pickle serialization processes lists, dictionaries, and sets from their live contents while retaining checks for collection size changes.
Dictionary entries provided through iterators are checked for the expected key-value structure. Serialization errors also include context about the item that caused the error.
Collection serialization uses protocol-appropriate output, including incremental handling for larger collections.
Serialize live collection entries instead of prefetching snapshots, and
share incremental list/dict iterator batching with bounded lookahead.
Preserve callback, tuple, and error cleanup ordering, distinguish protocol
from the writable bin flag, and terminate exhausted native cursors safely.
Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Pickle serialization now traverses lists, dictionaries, and sets as it saves their contents. Protocol-specific batching remains in place. Set traversal uses a new position-based PySet.next_entry method.

Summary
Iterator batching and list serialization crates/stdlib/src/pickle.rs
List serialization reads and clones entries from the live list. Shared iterator batching validates and saves items incrementally, using single-item opcodes for protocol 0 and batches of up to BATCH_SIZE for higher protocols.
Live dictionary serialization crates/stdlib/src/pickle.rs
Protocol 0 serializes dictionary items through iterator batching. Higher protocols traverse live entries and retain the size-change check.
Live set serialization crates/vm/src/builtins/set.rs, crates/stdlib/src/pickle.rs
PySet.next_entry returns the next position and item. Set serialization uses it to read live entries and checks the set size after each batch.

Ordinary serialization is not shown to be affected, but reducers that mutate their containing collections can produce stale contents or inconsistent mutation errors. These narrow compatibility issues warrant fixes or explicit owner acceptance.

Add a regression test for live list reads inside a batch.
For protocols 1 and above, add a pickle snippet where the first reducer replaces the next list entry with 42. Assert that unpickling returns 42 for that entry. This protects batch_appends_list from being changed back to batch snapshots.

Check the list size after the final singleton item.
The binary singleton branch returns before the size check. A reducer that appends or removes list entries while saving the final item now succeeds. The merge-base code ran the same check after every batch, including a batch of one item.

Do not use the original collection length as the completion condition.
A value reducer can delete an already-yielded dictionary key and reinsert it after the live cursor without changing the dictionary length. For exactly 1000 entries, total then reaches initial_len at the batch boundary, so save_dict omits the replacement and its changed value. The single-entry fallback can produce the same result for a 1001-entry dictionary.
Protocol-4+ save_set has the same count-bounded behavior. A reducer can discard an already-yielded member and add a replacement member that the loop omits.

Handle same-size cursor exhaustion without reporting a size change.
A reducer can perform same-size structural churn that compacts the dictionary after the first batch. The saved cursor can then be exhausted before the singleton entry, and this branch raises "dictionary changed size during iteration" even though __len__() is unchanged.
Handle exhaustion according to the native dictionary-iterator contract. Do not silently treat it as successful completion unless that contract guarantees that no entries are omitted. Otherwise, return an error that identifies structural iterator invalidation rather than a size change.
